For a long time, scientists assumed that newborns have a severely limited sense of pain (if any). However, this assumption is wrong and led to a “start of the exit” from piglet surgical castration. Some of the currently discussed or already implemented alternatives such as general or local anaesthesia during surgical castration raise additional welfare concerns as well as legal problems and/or are hardly applicable. The favoured long-term, welfare-friendly “gold standard” is to raise entire male pigs (EM). However, this may also impose certain welfare problems under the current conventional housing and management conditions. The specific types of behaviour displayed by EM such as mounting and aggressive behaviours but also increased exploration, which are partially linked to sexual maturation, increase the risk for injuries. The current status of knowledge (scientific literature and farmer experiences) on housing of EM suggests that environmental enrichment, space, group-stability, social constellation, feeding (diet and feeder space), health and climate control are critical factors to be considered for future housing systems. From an animal welfare point of view, an intermediate variant to be favoured to reduce problematic behaviour could be to slaughter EM before reaching puberty or to immunize boars early on to suppress testicular function. Immunization against endogenous GnRH can reduce EM-specific problems after the 2nd vaccination.

To improve students' critical thinking skills, this study used online PBL (Problem-Based Learning) on learning Natural Science in the field of Biology. This research was conducted in pre-experimental research design with the subjects of 4th semester students in study program of PGMI (Teacher Education of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah). The results of the analysis showed that the improvement of critical thinking skill of female students is better than male groups. Based on the results of the hypothesis testing obtained from the data showed that the N_Gain critical thinking skill of male and female students were greater than α (sig. 0.051 ˃ (α) 0.05.), therefore H0 was accepted and H1 was rejected. That is, there is no difference in the improvement of critical thinking skill between male and female students. When it came from the indicators of critical thinking, the N-Gain score for all indicators of the female group was better than that of the male one. Also, for students’ independence, the average percentage of student responses in all aspects showed that they were in a Good category. The average percentage of student responses on the planning aspect was 73.65% in a Good category. The process aspect of student independent learning had the highest score among the three aspects, which was 75.73% or in the Good category, and the Learning Evaluation Aspect has the lowest score among the three aspects, which was 66.53% and was in a Good category.

The paper focused on the analysis of the gender factors under the developing of a marketing program to promote green goods. With the purpose to identify the scientific schools on this theme, the bibliometric analysis was conducted. In 2013 year and 2019 year, there was a significant increase in the number of publications which focused on the investigation on green marketing issues. Such trends could be explained by the growing level of interest of the world community in environmental issues. The findings allowed concluding that green marketing is considered by scientists in linking with such scientific areas as health economics, social development, economic development. The scientific community studied the gender and age parameters as key factors in the effective implementation of green marketing. In order to determine the role of gender and age factors in decision-making on the purchase of environmental goods, the survey of 176 students from Sumy State University (Ukraine) was conducted. The findings confirmed that women were more aware of environmental products than men, and 84.1% of women prefer to buy environmental products. It was determined that the most popular eco bags are shoppers – 54.5% among respondents, in second place – garbage sorting (49.4% among respondents), in third place – the rejection of plastic (48.3% among respondents). It was found that 77.8% of respondents are looking for eco-products in the category of food. Male respondents of all age are most looking for eco-goods in the category of household goods (55 respondents). Male respondents do not follow modern eco-trends and do not pay much attention to environmental labelling. Women, on the other hand, are more aware of environmental issues and often support eco-trends. The generalized results showed that one of the factors that reduce the effectiveness of green marketing was the low level of awareness of students on the nature and importance of eco-products. It was found that gender should be considered during the selection of communications channels with students and green marketing tools for the promotion of environmental products.

ABSTRACTOlder men are becoming more visible in care-giving research but there are still few studies that focus expressly on the extent to which care-giving has made positive contributions to their life and has been rewarding. Drawing on data from in-depth personal interviews, this Portuguese study analyses the positive statements in the personal descriptions of the care-giving experience of 53 elderly men who were caring for chronically-ill wives. It also explores the differences between the positive references made by the men who were caring for a wife who had dementia and those made by men whose wives had physical impairments. Using open coding and content analysis, positive aspects were identified in 32 of the 53 care-giving situations. The most prevalent themes were ‘satisfaction’ and ‘perceived social honour’. The findings show that positive returns from the caring experience and role were strongly associated with previous good marital relationships and the husband's good self-rated health, and manifested in both specific coping strategies and global and situational meaning-making processes. The study demonstrates that much more can be learnt about the positive dimensions of care in older men's lives, and that such understanding can inform and strengthen formal and therapeutic support.

Environmental factors can shape reproductive investment strategies and influence the variance in male mating success. Environmental effects on extrapair paternity have traditionally been ascribed to aspects of the social environment, such as breeding density and synchrony. However, social factors are often confounded with habitat quality and are challenging to disentangle. We used both natural variation in habitat quality and a food supplementation experiment to separate the effects of food availability—one key aspect of habitat quality—on extrapair paternity (EPP) and reproductive success in the black-throated blue warbler, Setophaga caerulescens . High natural food availability was associated with higher within-pair paternity (WPP) and fledging two broods late in the breeding season, but lower EPP. Food-supplemented males had higher WPP leading to higher reproductive success relative to controls, and when in low-quality habitat, food-supplemented males were more likely to fledge two broods but less likely to gain EPP. Our results demonstrate that food availability affects trade-offs in reproductive activities. When food constraints are reduced, males invest in WPP at the expense of EPP. These findings imply that environmental change could alter how individuals allocate their resources and affect the selective environment that drives variation in male mating success.

The Dublin Principles recognize the role that women play in water resources management. The South African Minister of Water Affairs, Prof. Kader Asmal, coined a new expression by referring to the “feminization of water”. The article explores some of the ramifications of this and shows that the two aspects are not necessarily the same thing. Feminization does not necessarily mean bringing more women into management processes as it is often depicted. This is the quantitative aspect that is often referred to by male managers and it has been given a negative implication as a result. The more important issue is the qualitative aspect that involves processes such as stakeholder participation, viewing alternatives before a decision is made and accountability.

Male sex work (MSW) research has been generally limited to the examination of “social problems.” Although there have been studies on occupational aspects, pointed examinations of the occupational environment, detailing the contemporary nature of the field, are rare. Research on nuances of the occupational context of MSW, providing insight on the rapidly changing face of the field, is wanting. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 20 escorts in Brisbane, Australia. This study explored job success, indicating that success in the field was well articulated, possibly highlighting that male independent escorting is becoming a professionalized occupation, with a shift away from current stigmatized understandings.

Obesity is a serious public health concern in the Gulf States. Students are exposed to many unhealthy weight-related behaviors due to college life. However, research that gives insight into regional and culture-specific aspects and determinants of weight-related behaviors in students is lacking. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential determinants of weight change, eating behaviors, physical activity, sedentary behaviors, and sleep behaviors in Saudi university students. Five semi-structured focus group discussions guided by Social Cognitive Theory were conducted, consisting of 33 male university students 20 to 22 years old. The data were transcribed, coded, and organized according to themes. The students reported weight gain due to personal, social, and environmental factors related to university lifestyle, such as unhealthy eating behaviors, low physical activity, high sedentary behaviors, and inadequate sleep. Both eating behaviors and physical activity shared similar personal aspects found in other studies, such as knowledge, stress, lack of time, and lack of motivation. However, there were some unique social and environmental factors in the region, such as the social norms, cultural aspects, weather conditions, passive transport dependency, and khat consumption, compared with studies worldwide. Such differences are key factors to developing effective interventions in the future.

Vocal mimicry is one of the more striking aspects of avian vocalization and is widespread across songbirds. However, little is known about how mimics acquire heterospecific and environmental sounds. We investigated geographical and individual variation in the mimetic repertoires of males of a proficient mimic, the spotted bowerbird Ptilonorhynchus maculatus . Male bower owners shared more of their mimetic repertoires with neighbouring bower owners than with more distant males. However, interbower distance did not explain variation in the highly repeatable renditions given by bower owners of two commonly mimicked species. From the similarity between model and mimic vocalizations and the patterns of repertoire sharing among males, we suggest that the bowerbirds are learning their mimetic repertoire from heterospecifics and not from each other.

Laboratory rats show a positive response to low- and nonstressful novel events. The novel event may involve a number of aspects of the stimulus field. It is usually associated with a change in amount of environmental complexity. Most studies concerning novelty-related behavior involve the introduction of novel objects or the rearrangement of familiar objects. The present purpose was to measure exploratory behavior in response to environments of increased and decreased complexity. Both directions of environmental change are conditions of novelty. A two-way manipulation of increasing and decreasing the complexity of the environment was used. Rats of both sexes showed increased exploration to exposure to novelty, no matter which manipulation was applied; however, female and male rats behaved differently to the two types of novelty. Males responded more to novelty from the introduction of an unfamiliar object. The results indicate novel stimulation, whether of increasing or decreasing complexity, has reward properties. Perhaps the male-specific behavior directed toward unfamiliar objects may serve an adaptive function.

The expression of bird song is expected to signal male quality to females. ‘Quality’ is determined by genetic and environmental factors, but, surprisingly, there is very limited evidence if and how genetic aspects of male quality are reflected in song. Here, we manipulated the genetic make-up of canaries ( Serinus canaria ) via inbreeding, and studied its effects upon song output, complexity, phonetics and, for the first time, song learning. To this end, we created weight-matched inbred and outbred pairs of male fledglings, which were subsequently exposed to the same tutor male during song learning. Inbreeding strongly affected syllable phonetics, but there were little or no effects on other song features. Nonetheless, females discriminated among inbred and outbred males, as they produced heavier clutches when mated with an outbred male. Our study highlights the importance of song phonetics, which has hitherto often been overlooked.

The aim of this study is to characterize the cognitive aspect of the semantic space of hope in patients in the terminal stage of cancer. This was confirmed in the research on hope by C. R. Snyder and B. Schrank. Hope is of great importance in all the great world religions and belief systems, both as regards a personal God or impersonal deities. Hoping is a human capacity with varying affective, cognitive and behavioral dimensions. Psychological, pedagogical (particularly in the framework of special needs pedagogy and thanatological pedagogy) and theological reflection on hope can provide support for dying people. In order to conduct the research, the semantic differential research method was selected. The research technique employed was a therapeutic conversation, and the research tool was the B.L. Block’s DSN-3 test. The DSN-3 test allows one to assess hope in the semantic space in three aspects: cognitive, emotional and functional. For the purposes of this study, only the cognitive aspect was taken into account. The study was begun on 1 April 2010 and ended in the last days of December 2020. It included 110 male patients in the terminal stage of cancer. The youngest respondent was 19 years old and the oldest was 94 years old. The surveyed men most often perceived hope in the semantic space in the cognitive aspect as more true, wise, meaningful and real than false, stupid, meaningless and deceptive. Their attitude to hope was, therefore, more affirmative than negative. The research did not reveal the importance of the age of the respondents on the degree of affirmation/negation of hope in the cognitive aspect in the semantic space; however, men in the period of late maturity and professional activity expressed the lowest level of the affirmation of hope. It is worthwhile to conduct further research concerning hope in other aspects (especially emotional and functional) in the semantic space in order to use the obtained results to consider what to take into account when providing patients in the terminal stage of cancer with better personalized holistic care than before.

IntroductionExperts agree that male involvement in maternal health is a multifaceted concept, but a robust assessment is lacking, hampering interpretation of the literature. This systematic review aims to examine the conceptualisation of male involvement in maternal health globally and review commonly used indicators.MethodsPubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science and CINAHL databases were searched for quantitative literature (between the years 2000 and 2020) containing indicators representing male involvement in maternal health, which was defined as the involvement, participation, engagement or support of men in all activities related to maternal health.ResultsAfter full-text review, 282 studies were included in the review. Most studies were conducted in Africa (43%), followed by North America (23%), Asia (15%) and Europe (12%). Descriptive and text mining analysis showed male involvement has been conceptualised by focusing on two main aspects: psychosocial support and instrumental support for maternal health care utilisation. Differences in measurement and topics were noted according to continent with Africa focusing on HIV prevention, North America and Europe on psychosocial health and stress, and Asia on nutrition. One-third of studies used one single indicator and no common pattern of indicators could be identified. Antenatal care attendance was the most used indicator (40%), followed by financial support (17%), presence during childbirth (17%) and HIV testing (14%). Majority of studies did not collect data from men directly.DiscussionResearchers often focus on a single aspect of male involvement, resulting in a narrow set of indicators. Aspects such as communication, shared decision making and the subjective feeling of support have received little attention. We believe a broader holistic scope can broaden the potential of male involvement programmes and stimulate a gender-transformative approach. Further research is recommended to develop a robust and comprehensive set of indicators for assessing male involvement in maternal health.

AbstractWorldwide road traffic accidents have been increasing. Human behaviors and environmental factors are often responsible for such events. This being a serious public health concern, public health interventions are needed to minimize the rate of road traffic accidents. We aimed to identify broader human behaviors, sociodemographic factors, and environmental factors associated with the risk of road traffic accidents. We searched for the relevant studies in electronic database including PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and World Health Organization global health library. In addition, a manual search was also performed. Findings from scientific literature were presented in a summative form. Young age, male gender, speed, influence of substance, use of mobile phone, driving experience, temperament, attitude, aggression, stress, anxiety, emotionality, fatigue, lack of sleep, and road conditions were found closely associated with a risk of road traffic accidents. Despite having substantial driving training and ability to handling motor vehicles, professional drivers such as bus and taxi drivers are very vulnerable to road traffic accidents. This study reports that the increasing prevalence of road traffic accidents can be addressed significantly by applying behavior change theories. The health belief model was found useful in promoting safer driving.

Acquired adaptation to local conditions (multiple generations across more than 50 years) may was evidenced by performance of Florida Angus relative to prominent U.S. Angus in subtropical Florida; later sexual maturation may be a prominent component of such adaptation, and increasing milk production may be antagonistic to adaptation in natural conditions. Cattle temperament may be indicative of adaptation and is highly heritable; however, results from random regression analyses suggest that the additive genetic component appears to decrease in importance and the permanent environmental component of phenotype appears to become more important as calves age. Crossbreeding represents a proven strategy to improve adaptation almost immediately. Heterosis influences cattle body temperature maintenance, reproduction, survival, and, to a lesser extent, temperament in subtropical or other stressful environmental conditions (for example, in toxic fescue). Prenatal stress alters patterns of methylation (and likely other epigenetic mechanisms) and thereby encourages or inhibits gene expression to promote postnatal fitness. Brahman exposed to prenatal stress exhibited substantially different patterns of methylation across the genome in lymphocytes in both male and female calves; those patterns differed by sex. Female longevity may be the ultimate adaptation trait, as annual compliance to reproductive standards may be an appropriate assessment of a combination of attributes that represent adaptation. Longevity has documented heterotic influence; the additive genetic component is less well characterized but real. A simple, effective way to improve longevity may be to select bulls from aged, proven cows.

SUMMARY Trichomonas vaginalis, a parasitic protozoan, is the etiologic agent of trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted disease (STD) of worldwide importance. Trichomoniasis is the most common nonviral STD, and it is associated with many perinatal complications, male and female genitourinary tract infections, and an increased incidence of HIV transmission. Diagnosis is difficult, since the symptoms of trichomoniasis mimic those of other STDs and detection methods lack precision. Although current treatment protocols involving nitroimidazoles are curative, metronidazole resistance is on the rise, outlining the need for research into alternative antibiotics. Vaccine development has been limited by a lack of understanding of the role of the host immune response to T. vaginalis infection. The lack of a good animal model has made it difficult to conduct standardized studies in drug and vaccine development and pathogenesis. Current work on pathogenesis has focused on the host-parasite relationship, in particular the initial events required to establish infection. These studies have illustrated that the pathogenesis of T. vaginalis is indeed very complex and involves adhesion, hemolysis, and soluble factors such as cysteine proteinases and cell-detaching factor. T. vaginalis interaction with the members of the resident vaginal flora, an advanced immune evasion strategy, and certain stress responses enable the organism to survive in its changing environment. Clearly, further research and collaboration will help elucidate these pathogenic mechanisms, and with better knowledge will come improved disease control.

Metro Bus Transit (MBT) is highly innovative and advanced transportation technology. Due to rapid urbanization in city Lahore, construction of MBT was considered as top priority technology to balance the demand. The main objective of the study was to evaluate environmental and social impacts of MBT before and after its construction, and the willingness of the people to use it. The study was conducted using a questionnaire during and after the construction of MBT. Face-to-face interviews of 500 hundred respondents who were users, contractors, residents and non-residents along the corridors of MBT were conducted. Mostly, male users were found due to the higher seats availability for them in bus that caused gender inequality. MBT has influenced the livelihood of many people in a positive way such as it created jobs as respondents were expecting. Only lower socio-economic respondents shifted their mode of transportation from own vehicles to MBT. Despite this, the respondents also expressed the need to improve other infrastructures and projects such as electricity supply, education, healthcare facility and other basic needs. Respondents showed high willingness to use MBT rather than conventional public transport and satisfied from its impacts. However, more amendments and improvements should be proposed for enhancing the efficiency of Metro Bus Transit.

The biological aspects of the spotted barb, Barbodes binotatus (Valenciennes, 1842) in Tamblingan Lake were not published yet. This study aims to determine the biological aspects of spotted barb in Tamblingan Lake. Fish samples were captured using gill nets with various mesh sizes at five fixed stations monthly from January to December 2019. A total of 357 individuals of the spotted barb was collected, with the total length of the specimens ranging from 3.9 to 15.6 cm, and total weight varied between 0.93 and 60.30 g. The length-weight relationship for males and females were expressed as W = 0.0375L2.83 and W = 0.0272L3.02, respectively. The growth pattern for males and females was allometric negative and isometric, subsequently. The male-female sex ratio was 1.10:1, and the condition factor for males and females were 0.75-1.42 and 0.40-1.49, respectively. We observed male fish with gonad maturity stage I to IV. In contrast, female fish have gonad maturity stage II to V. The highest gonadosomatic index of male and female fish was found in September, indicating a peak of the spawning time. Fecundity ranged from 57-23897 eggs, with an average of 5901 eggs.

In this paper, aspects of entrepreneurship in Ireland—North and South—based upon a sample of 4300 male work histories are analysed. Complementary log-log models are employed to investigate the factors underlying the first business startup by an individual. A between-sector analysis of entrepreneurial behaviour is presented; the preceding employment experience of entrepreneurs is analysed; and their subsequent employment spell is examined. Results show that religious denomination is not associated with self-employment in any sectors, but that Anglicans are more likely to set up employer businesses outwith the construction industry. There are also spatial differences in entrepreneurial expression, with the highest levels of formation of employer business occurring throughout Northern Ireland and the Dublin region of the Republic.

Abstract The objective of this study was to identify the occurrence of Achatina fulica in the Great Aracaju-SE Territory. This research was developed during the months of June 2016 to May 2017. The plots methodology was used for the monthly collections, following the collection time of 20 minutes per area. The mollusks were measured and soon afterwards the parasitological analysis of the mucus and faeces was performed. Molecular identification was performed to evaluate the possible presence of Angiostrongylus sp. We observed that the occurrence of A. fulica was more representative in urban areas, especially in vacant lots with the presence of litter and decomposing materials. In the specimens of A. fulica examined were male and female nematodes of the genus Rhabditis, in the research municipalities, except in Barra dos Coqueiros. No parasites of the genus Angiostrongylus were found in the mollusks examined. The influence of the presence of litter on the plots associated with the frequency of A. fulica was statistically significant. There was a correlation between the influence of rainfall and the frequency of A. fulica. A significant relationship between moisture and frequency and nematode positivity was identified. It was also observed that the larger the mollusk, the greater the chances of being infected by nematodes. Scientific knowledge about the biology of the A. fulica species associated with human intervention such as the maintenance of land and adequate sanitary measures may be important factors for a better control of this invasive mollusk.

The literature review analyzed 24 studies that explored male intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration risk factors among men, in particular Hispanics, using the socioecological model framework composed of four socioecological levels for violence prevention. Six databases were reviewed within the EBSCO search engine for articles published from 2000 to 2014. Articles reviewed were specific to risk factors for IPV perpetration among Hispanic men, focusing particularly on Mexican American men. Many key factors have previously been associated with risk for IPV perpetration; however, certain determinants are unique to Hispanics such as acculturation, acculturation stress, and delineated gender roles that include Machismo and Marianismo. These risk factors should be incorporated in future targeted prevention strategies and efforts and capitalize on the positive aspects of each to serve as protective factors.

The article presents a theoretical analysis of the scientific views of domestic and foreign scientists of the problem of stress factors and gender differences in stress resistance, levels of stress in the operational activities of employees of internal affairs agencies. Some gender characteristics, stereotypes of feminine and masculine behavior are revealed. The psycho-applied aspects of the problem under study are reflected in the form of the results of psychological observations of the authors of the article on the behavior of employees of the internal affairs agencies according to which male and female employees do not always act according to gender stereotypes of behavior when they find themselves in difficult and dangerous situations. Taking into account the mixed nature of the service collectives of the subdivisions of the territorial bodies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia the need for an empirical study aimed at studying the stress resistance of female and male employees of the internal affairs bodies is justified. Using a longitudinal, large-scale sample of British twins, we addressed the prediction of both cognitive abilities and behavioral adjustment from eight domains of environmental risk: minority status, socio-economic status, maternal medical factors, twin medical factors, maternal depression, chaos within the home environment, and parental feelings towards their children and discipline. Participants included 5765 families with twins (49.1% male) born in 1994 and 1995. Aspects of environmental risk were assessed from birth until the children’s third birthdays; outcome measures were assessed at their fourth birthdays. Overall prediction of outcome (via multiple regression analysis) was moderate (R = .23 -.48). SES and chaos were the strongest predictors for the cognitive outcomes whereas for total behavior problems the more proximal parenting factors were also dominant. Future analyses will investigate these environmental risk indicators in the context of the genetically sensitive twin design.

ABSTRACT Introduction Hooking up is an impersonal sexual interaction, differing from sexual activity that occurs in the context of a committed relationship. Hookup behavior has been widely studied among college populations; however, this type of sexual behavior has yet to be explored in a military population. Methods The current study conducted semi-structured interviews with 10 male soldiers with high-risk drinking habits to explore conceptualizations of hooking up. Interviews were systematically coded and analyzed via thematic analysis. Results Five themes emerged: (1) definitions of hookups, (2) descriptions of why hookups occur, (3) how hookups occur (ie, the social context of hookups), (4) factors that facilitate hookups, and (5) differences between hookups and relationships. Conclusions Findings suggest that perceptions of hookups among participants who were male soldiers are generally consistent with college populations, with some varying aspects.

Geographic variation in the strength or direction of sexual selection acting on different populations has been documented before but has not been the subject of intense study. We examine covariation among sexually selected traits and environmental factors for five stream populations of a small New Zealand freshwater fish, the upland bully, Gobiomorphus breviceps (Eleotridae). Levels of infection by a trematode parasite and some aspects of female behaviour and male colouration varied significantly among populations. Among individual fish we found that female mate choice behaviours and male colouration did not correlate similarly with other traits, or with parasite load, in the different populations studied. We also determined whether average population values correlated among the different stream populations. Whereas environmental factors such as water clarity and substrate colouration appeared to be unimportant, average parasite load correlated with some components of male colouration, and female preferences appeared to be correlated with male colouration. These results illustrate both the variability among populations that prevents results obtained from one population from being generalized to the entire species, and the plasticity of sexually selected traits in relation to local conditions.

The indicators of the quality of life of students (60 boys and 200 girls) of the Medical College of the Volgograd State Medical University were analyzed. The study was conducted using the SF-36 quality of life questionnaire. Differences were revealed among students by gender and age groups. A high level of physical health of the respondents was revealed with a decrease in the level of their vital activity and mental health. The quality of life of male students is higher than that of girls, statistically significant differences are more pronounced in the younger age group, while gender differences are leveled by the 2nd and 3rd year of study. An increase in self-esteem of one»s physical and mental state was found in the learning process. The performed correlation analysis showed the presence of strong links between indicators of mental health and vital activity. The indicators of the quality of life, assessed on the basis of subjective perception, can be used as an additional criterion for determining the state of health. It is necessary to continue the research in order to increase the representativeness of the sample, which will make it possible to form a database of the quality of life of students receiving secondary vocational education of a medical profile, which can be used as informational and methodological in the development of preventive programs for this contingent of students.

Intracranial lipomas can be associated with other congenital abnormalities, but they are commonly found incidentally on imaging studies. Although the location of intracranial lipomas can be quite variable, they are extremely rare in interpeduncular fossa. We report a case of interpeduncular lipoma with its radio-anatomical features in terms of distinction with pathologies that can appear similarly, as the unexpected location of rare cases can be challenging for radiologists. The MR images of a 55-year-old male patient suffering from episodic dizziness attacks and impaired walking showed two different lipoma masses in interpeduncular fossa and chiasmatic cistern which are isointense with adipose tissue in T1, T2-weighted and FLAIR sequences. Intracranial lipomas can be located in the corpus callosum and almost in all cisterns, however they are extremely rare in interpeduncular fossa. Due to the mass effect, the structures located in close proximity of the lipomas should be evaluated.

This study is to identify the effect of environmental psychology to the dimensions of psychological well-being. Those dimensions are (i) acceptance of self, (ii) the purpose of life, (iii) freedom of autonomy, (iv) control of the environment (v) a positive relationship with other people, and (vi) the self - development among National University of Malaysia students. A total of 51 students participated in this study. The respondents in the study consisted of students from one to fourth year undergraduate. The instrument used to measure the study was adapted and modified based on Ryff Psychological Wellbeing Scales (1995). This study used quantitative method in the form of questionnaires (surveys). In addition, this research also employs descriptive and inference statistics analysis in the form of mean score, standard deviation, percentage, frequency, regression analysis and t- test. Results showed that the psychological aspects of the environment significantly affect all dimensions of psychological well-being among students where as the most dominant influence in psychological well-being is the dimension of self-acceptance. Hence, the results showed that there were no significant differences among male and female students in the dimension of psychological well-being. Thus the study has to carried out more comprehensive and far-reaching that mainly involving aspects of physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual and spiritual so that it can measure the level of well-being holistically among students from primary school up to the tertiary level in turn to enhance the quality of national education.

Genome instability may play a role in severe cases of male infertility, with disrupted spermatogenesis being just one manifestation of decreased general health and increased morbidity. Here, we review the data on the association of male infertility with genetic, epigenetic, and environmental alterations, the causes and consequences, and the methods for assessment of genome instability. Male infertility research has provided evidence that spermatogenic defects are often not limited to testicular dysfunction. An increased incidence of urogenital disorders and several types of cancer, as well as overall reduced health (manifested by decreased life expectancy and increased morbidity) have been reported in infertile men. The pathophysiological link between decreased life expectancy and male infertility supports the notion of male infertility being a systemic rather than an isolated condition. It is driven by the accumulation of DNA strand breaks and premature cellular senescence. We have presented extensive data supporting the notion that genome instability can lead to severe male infertility termed “idiopathic oligo-astheno-teratozoospermia.” We have detailed that genome instability in men with oligo-astheno-teratozoospermia (OAT) might depend on several genetic and epigenetic factors such as chromosomal heterogeneity, aneuploidy, micronucleation, dynamic mutations, RT, PIWI/piRNA regulatory pathway, pathogenic allelic variants in repair system genes, DNA methylation, environmental aspects, and lifestyle factors.

Abstract Climate adaptation research often ignores the broader socio-cultural human sphere within which climate change takes place. Dominant viewpoints on climate adaptation derive from the biophysical world that often excludes social, economic, and political contexts that also connect to biophysical changes. Hybrid methodological mixed methods approaches to climate adaptation provide paradigmatically different questions. This perspective is useful for identifying socio-cultural aspects of climatic adaptation. To demonstrate the power of a hybrid approach for interconnecting human and non-human factors implicated in climate adaptation, we deploy an in-depth case study of N. Benin, West African farmers who increasingly must configure their farming methods to tackle erratic changes in weather. The case study examines the role gender dynamics play in climate adaptation that found few gender differences in the ways male and female farmers perceive the biophysical aspects of climate adaptation on their subsistence farming lifestyle from their initial village climate survey. However, the qualitative components of their study uncovered significant gender differences in socio-cultural adaptation challenges, vulnerabilities, and future lifestyle opportunities. We discuss the transformative policy implications about ignoring gender difference and the importance of taking an intersectional approach to variation in climate adaptation policy making.

Male reproductive coalitions, in which males cooperate to attract females, are a rare strategy among vertebrates. While some studies have investigated ultimate aspects of these relationships, little is known about the mechanistic role that hormones play in modulating cooperative behaviours. Here, we examined male testosterone variation in a tropical lekking bird, the wire-tailed manakin ( Pipra filicauda ), which exhibits cooperative male–male display coalitions. We found that testosterone levels in territorial males were comparable to those of temperate breeding birds, a surprising result given their environmental, social and reproductive dynamics. In addition, social status rather than plumage was a strong predictor of testosterone variation. Territorial males had significantly higher testosterone levels than did two other plumage classes of floater males, who do not hold territories. We hypothesize that testosterone variation plays an important role in the establishment of male dominance hierarchies (competition), while concurrently facilitating stable display partnerships (cooperation).

This study investigated how dissatisfaction with particular aspects of the body was associated with overall body dissatisfaction among male adolescents in Western and Asian cultures. One hundred and six Malaysian Malays, 55 Malaysian Chinese, 195 Chinese from China, and 45 non-Asian Australians aged 12 to 19 years completed a questionnaire assessing dissatisfaction with their overall body and dissatisfaction with varying aspects of their body. Dissatisfaction with the face, height, and hair was positively correlated with overall body dissatisfaction among Malaysian Malays after body mass index, age and dissatisfaction with body areas typically included in measures (weight/shape, upper, middle, and lower body, and muscles) had been controlled for. Dissatisfaction with the face was positively correlated with overall body dissatisfaction among Malaysian Chinese. These findings demonstrate the differences in body focus for males from different cultures and the importance of using assessment measures that address all possible areas of body focus.

<p style="text-align: justify;">Many researchers have separately developed instruments to measure environmental characteristics such as attitudes, values, and knowledge. However, there is no instrument used to measure all these aspects in one comprehensive instrument. This study is meant to develop and validate a green character instrument which reveals student behavior and awareness of the environment. The instrument consists of 40 statement items consisting of 5 aspects, namely private pro-environmental behavior, public pro-environmental behavior, environmental knowledge, environmental values, and environmental attitudes. It was implemented on 1,398 students from 15 universities in Indonesia. The instrument content validation was analyzed by three experts using content validity index (CVI). The construct validity was analyzed using exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and RASCH analysis. The content validity results obtained CVI scores ranging between 0.8 and 0.9 with a good category, while item reliability was in a fairly good category with a high level of separation index. Construct validation resulted in 34 items (4 items were eliminated after Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis, and 2 items were eliminated after RASCH analysis) spread over five constructs, namely environmental behavior, environmental knowledge, environmental values, environmental attitudes, and environmental habits. The resulting instrument has a good level of item difficulty, with a well understood response set which can be understood easily by respondents, and without bias. Therefore, it can be used to measure the students’ green character on both male and female.</p>

This article aims to analyze how Agatha Christie’s character Hercule Poirot is feminized through several aspects, namely his appearance and character, his age and recurring cat symbolism. All the aspects and their examples were collected from Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot stories employing close reading as a method. By the use of several academic papers focused mainly on the topic of gender stereotypes in connection to the presented examples from Agatha Christie’s works, the central argument is that the character of the male detective Hercule Poirot is strongly feminized. Although this theory is already widely accepted, this article focuses on its less frequently discussed aspects, namely cat symbolism and age-related feminization.

Textile products drive a significant portion of the world economy, providing jobs, and being present in every aspect of our lives in all countries around the world. However, in its production, issues related to environmental and social pressures emerge. Taking into consideration the growing concern related to environmental and social impacts, it is necessary to address the issue of emissions generated indirectly by the sectors that supply the textile industry. This work has carried out an environmental and socioeconomic assessment of the consumption of textile products in Brazil, considering the relationship with international trade. The methodology used was the Multi-Regional Input-Output (MRIO) analysis, and the database used was Exiobase 3, for the year 2011. It was possible to conclude that most of the indirect impacts related to the textile industry are domestically generated. In the category of climate change and primary energy consumption, the sector that stood out was natural gas, with 51% of CO2 emissions and 33% of energy consumption. The largest share of indirect jobs is generated in the commercial sector with 34%, and the largest number of indirect employees are male with medium skill level, which represents 33%, followed by workers from the vulnerable class (self-employed) with 27%. Based on this analysis, it was possible to identify the greatest limitations related to socio-environmental aspects and the possible solutions to be adopted for this sector.

Abstract Two closely related species of Drosophila, D. simulans and D. mauritiana, differ markedly in morphology of the posterior lobe of the male genital arch. Both size and shape aspects of lobe variation can be quantified by a morphometric descriptor based on elliptical Fourier and principal components analyses. The genetic architecture of this quantitative trait (PC1) was investigated by hybridizing inbred lines to produce two backcross populations of ~200 individuals each, which were analyzed jointly by a composite interval mapping procedure with the aid of 18 marker loci. The parental lines show a large difference in PC1 (30.4 environmental standard deviations), and the markers account for &gt;80% of the phenotypic variation in backcross populations. Eight of 15 intervals analyzed show convincing evidence of quantitative trait loci (QTL), and the range of estimated QTL effects is 5.7–15.9% of the parental difference (1.7–4.8 environmental standard deviations). These estimates may represent the joint effects of multiple QTL within a single interval (which averaged 23 cM in length). Although there is some evidence of partial dominance of mauritiana alleles and for epistasis, the pattern of inheritance is largely additive.

Background: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is characterized by progressive thinning of scalp hair defined by various patterns. Although there are no serious direct health consequences, the loss of scalp hair can be psychosocially distressing, thus it may significantly affect a variety of psychological and social aspects of one’s life and the individual’s overall quality of life (QoL). This cross- sectional study aimed to assess the QoL of male patients with AGA. Methods: TA total of 176 clinically diagnosed cases of AGA with Hamilton- Norwood grade III and above presenting to Outpatient Department of Dermatology at B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan were enrolled in the study. Hair specific Skindex-29 was assessed in these patients. Results: Among 176 patients, 120 (68.18%) had a grade III AGA and 56 (31.82%) had grade IV-VII AGA. One hundred and forty (79.55%) patients were aged < 35 years. Family history of AGA was present in 108 (61.36%) patients. Hair specific Skindex (mean ± SD (median)) in patients with androgenetic alopecia was 14.24 ± 18.29 (6.46). The emotional, symptomatic and functional scores (mean ± SD (median)) of patients were 20.3 ± 22.41 (12.0), 11.34 ± 14.69 (5.71), and 10.78 ± 17.79 (1.66) respectively. Conclusion: Patients with androgenetic alopecia were affected emotionally more than symptomatically and functionally. It is important for health professionals to assess QoL in AGA patients to provide better and appropriate care.

This study explores male physicians’ use of verbal compliance gaining strategies to encourage patients to adhere to medication regimens, lifestyle changes, or future appointments, and assesses which strategies are associated with patients’ reported healthcare experiences. Five physicians from a family practice clinic in northern British Columbia, Canada, were audio-recorded while interacting with 31 patients during actual consultations. Compliance-gaining utterances were coded into five categories of strategies, while patient experience with care was assessed using a questionnaire. A number of intriguing findings emerged: direct orders were related to a more negative experience with interpersonal aspects of care, but were fairly frequently used, especially with female patients. Persuasion was the only strategy that promoted a positive patient experience, but was rarely used. However, the effect of persuasion on patient experience was no longer significant when adjusting for patients’ health status. Physicians relied mostly on motivation strategies to encourage adherence, but these strategies were not related to patients’ assessment of their healthcare experiences. These results suggest that the most frequently used verbal compliance gaining strategies by physicians are not always appreciated by patients. To be more effective, it is necessary to inform physicians about which compliance-gaining strategies promote a positive patient healthcare experience.
