Cellular spaces have recently received a lot of attention in computer science and elsewhere as models capable of bridging the gap between disaggregate and aggregate description. Despite their obvious spatial interpretation, standard cell-space models are too constrained by their background conventions to be useful in realistic geographic applications. In this paper, a generalization of the cell-space principle is presented, based on discrete model theory, and then applied to a hypothetical but fairly complex problem of individual decision and large-scale urban change. The paper ends with a discussion of the wider import of this methodology, which has close links with, among other things, bifurcation theory, cognitive science modeling of individual decision and behavior, and other issues of actual or potential interest to geographers.

In this paper, a two-stage optimization algorithm is proposed to simultaneously achieve the optimum structure and microstructure of lightweight cellular materials. Microstructure is assumed being uniform in macro-scale to meet manufacturing requirements. Furthermore, to reduce the computation cost, the design process is divided into two stages, which are concurrent design and material design. In the first stage, macro density and modulus matrix of cellular material are used both as design variables. Then, the optimum topology of macro-structure and modulus matrix of cellular materials will be obtained under this configuration. In the second stage, topology optimization technology is used to achieve a micro-structure of cellular material which is corresponded with the optimum modulus matrix in the earlier concurrent design stage. Moreover, the effectiveness of the present design methodology and optimization scheme is then demonstrated through numerical example.

Abstract Increasing the capacity of wireless cellular network is one of the major challenges for the coming years. A lot of research works have been done to exploit the ultra-wide band of millimeter wave (mmWave) and integrate it into future cellular networks. In this paper, to efficiently utilize the mmWave band while reducing the total deployment cost, we propose to deploy the mmWave access in the form of ultra-high capacity mmWave gates distributed in the coverage area of the macro basestation (Macro BS). Delayed offloading is also proposed to proficiently exploit the gates and relax the demand of deploying a large number of them. Furthermore, a mobility-aware weighted proportional fair (WPF) user scheduling is proposed to maximize the intra-gate offloading efficiency while maintaining the long-term offloading fairness among the users inside the gate. To efficiently link the mmWave gates with the Macro BS in a unified cellular network structure, a cloud cooperated heterogeneous cellular network (CC-HetNet) is proposed. In which, the gates and the Macro BS are linked to the centralized radio access network (C-RAN) via high-speed backhaul links. Using the concept of control/user (C/U) plane splitting, signaling information is sent to the UEs through the wide coverage Macro BS, and most of users’ delayed traffic is offloaded through the ultra-high capacity mmWave gates. An enhanced access network discovery and selection function (eANDSF) based on a network wide proportional fair criterion is proposed to discover and select an optimal mmWave gate to associate a user with delayed traffic. It is interesting to find out that a mmWave gate consisting of only 4 mmWave access points (APs) can offload up to 70 GB of delayed traffic within 25 sec, which reduces the energy consumption of a user equipment (UE) by 99.6 % compared to the case of only using Macro BS without gate offloading. Also, more than a double increase in total gates offloaded bytes is obtained using the proposed eANDSF over using the conventional ANDSF proposed by 3GPP due to the optimality in selecting the associating gate.

AbstractMulti-access and heterogeneous wireless communications are considered to be one of the solutions for providing generalized mobility, high system efficiency and improved user experience, which are important characteristics of the Next Generation Networks. This paper proposes a Vertical Handover (VHO) decision algorithm for heterogeneous network architectures which integrate both cellular networks and Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). The cellular-WLAN and WLAN-WLAN VHO decisions are taken based on parameters which characterize both the coverage and the traffic load of the WLANs. Computer simulations performed in complex scenarios show that the proposed algorithm ensures better performance compared to “classical” VHO decision algorithms.

The most important feature of 3G mobile cellular network is introduction of voice data integrated service under multilayered cell environment to support overflow traffic of lower layered cells by upper ones. This paper deals with traffic model of three layered cells, i.e., micro cell, macro cell and satellite cell. Here a new call admission control is introduced for three layered cell of 3G mobile cellular network. State transition chain is designed for theoretical analysis of above mentioned traffic. Blocking probability of data call, new voice call and handover failure of voice call, probability of utilization of micro cell channel, macro cell channel and satellite cell channel are analyzed against different traffic parameters and yield logical results.

Deterioration of the materials, particularly metals under environmental conditions such as high temperature, alternating loading and chemical aggression is an example of processes which happen on the microstructure levels but project themselves upon macroscopically observed behaviour of materials and structures. This connection between both levels of observation was obvious to many researches, even if they aimed at macroscopic description on the level of continuum mechanics. The wisdom of micro- and macro-coupling was induced by a very complex nature of microstructural processes which demonstrated themselves as transgranular or intergranular failures, just to mention two typical modes of creep failure. The gap between micro- and macro-world was a challenge to both material science and mechanics societies throughout the second half of 20th century. A proposed method to cover this gap for polycrystalline materials is based on Cellular Automata (CA) technique well suited to be used on the microscopic level and giving responses relevant to macroscopic observations. It allows for microstructure modelling to distinguish grains and grain boundaries. Once it is done, a cellular automaton can be attributed to the Representative Volume Element (RVE) and failure mechanism described on the basis of appropriate transition rules. Examples of transgranular and intergranular creep damage growth are demonstrated. This procedure can be extended over the feedback from micro-level to macro-level leading to the formation of so-called CAFE technique.

In future heterogeneous cellular networks with small cells, such as D2D and relay, interference coordination between macro cells and small cells should be addressed through effective resource allocation and power control. The two-step Stackelberg game is a widely used and feasible model for resource allocation and power control problem formulation. Both in the follower games for small cells and in the leader games for the macro cell, the cost parameters are a critical variable for the performance of Stackelberg game. Previous studies have failed to adequately address the optimization of cost parameters. This paper presents a reinforcement learning approach for effectively training cost parameters for better system performance. Furthermore, a two-stage pretraining plus ε -greedy algorithm is proposed to accelerate the convergence of reinforcement learning. The simulation results can demonstrate that compared with the three beachmarking algorithms, the proposed algorithm can enhance average throughput of all users and cellular users by up to 7% and 9.7%, respectively.

Resumo:
Auxetic materials represent a relatively new class of materials that are characterized by a cellular structure and a negative Poisson coefficient. Auxetics are extremely useful for morphing applications thanks to their synclastic deformation capability. Most of these materials have been developed with macro-scaled cellular units. However there are some applications (e.g., micro-air vehicles or biomedical applications) for which polymeric morphing materials need to be applied in relatively small areas. In these cases, a material scale reduction that leads to lightweight auxetic films with a miniaturized cellular structure could be of great interest. With this in mind, an experimental study was conducted to analyze the response of films that are characterized by a miniaturized cellular structure. The unit cells in this study were made of an aggregation of microwires and micronodes that were strategically interconnected to form auxetic expansions and contractions. The reduction in scale of the cellular units has a significant impact on the material characterization and properties. The response of polymeric micro-scaled cells is in fact here demonstrated to be strongly influenced by surface forces and dramatic changes in gaseous or liquid environment. This represents the most critical aspect and key variation when comparing these films with standard macro-auxetics. The extremely challenging (at this length-scale) fabrication and testing processes were optimized. Single cells, were thus successfully tested in different environments with programmed and digital micro-stages while being monitored under a microscope with a video camera. Digital image correlation techniques were used to highlight the deformation. The expansion/contraction process was found to be fully reversible after several cycles and at different deformation speeds.
