A pesquisa foi desenvolvida na Bacia do Rio Macabu que integra a Região Hidrográfica IX do Baixo Paraíba do Sul e Itabapoana e, assim como várias regiões hidrográficas fluminenses, apresenta longo histórico de intervenções antrópicas dentro e fora dos canais fluviais. O objetivo do trabalho é apresentar mapeamento dos Estilos Fluviais identificados na Bacia do rio Macabu, considerando-se a dinâmica atual dos processos geomorfológicos e hidrogeomorfológico a serem aplicados na gestão dos recursos hídricos. O mapeamento e classificação dos segmentos dos rios e suas tipologias foram realizados com base na aplicação de parâmetros morfométricos, para a avaliação dos controles regionais e locais sobre a forma e o comportamento do rio, no confinamento do vale, na forma em planta de toda a extensão do canal e nas unidades geomorfológicas do fundo de vale. Os resultados mostram que a compartimentação do relevo possibilita a ocorrência de diferentes feições fluviais, exerce controle regional no sistema fluvial e tem influência sobre característica do vale. Dessa forma, a configuração espacial dos compartimentos determina os padrões de comportamento em cada setor. Foram identificados oito Estilos Fluviais cuja diferenciação entre os segmentos permite compreender como os processos e formas se caracterizam, integram e se distribuem dentro do sistema fluvial. De um modo geral, a bacia do rio Macabu se expressa como um ambiente múltiplo e complexo, com muitas problemáticas relacionadas aos seus usos e modificações. Os resultados representam parte dos subsídios necessários para uma gestão eficiente e eficaz e para a tomada de decisão. Identification of River Styles in the Macabu Basin (RJ) to be Applied in Water Resource Management A B S T R A C TThe research was developed in the Macabu Basin that integrates the Lower Paraíba do Sul and Itabapoana Hydrographic Region and, as well as several basin of fluminense hydrographic regions, presents a long history of anthropogenic interventions inside and outside channels. The objective of this present work is bringing forward mapping of the River Styles in the Macabu Basin to be applied in the management of water resources, considering the current dynamics of geomorphological and hydrogeomorphological processes. The mapping and the classification of river segments and their typologies were performed based on the application of morphometric parameters for the evaluation of regional and local controls on the river shape and behavior, valley confinement, river planform, channel length and valley bottom geomorphological units. The results show that the relief compartments allows the occurrence of different fluvial features, exerts regional control in the fluvial system and influences the valley characteristics. Thus, the spatial configuration of the compartments determines the patterns of behavior in each sector. Eight River Styles have been identified whose differentiation allows understanding how processes and forms are characterized, integrated and distributed within the river system. In general, Macabu Basin is a multiple and complex environment with many issues related to its uses and modifications. The results represent part of the inputs needed for efficient and effective management and decision-making.Keywords: Fluvial Geomorphoplogy; River Classification; Morphometric Index; Valley Setting.

O estudo analisa e busca subsídios para gerar e transferir tecnologias compatíveis com o nível socioeconômico dos apicultores. Os dados foram extraídos a partir do Censo Apícola, englobando 75 municípios com atividade apícola representativa. Foi utilizada a Análise Fatorial para caracterizar o nível tecnológico dos apicultores. Os resultados evidenciaram baixo nível tecnológico. Por meio dos escores fatoriais calculou-se o índice bruto de desenvolvimento. Com valores mais altos desse índice, destacaram-se os municípios de Conceição de Macabu, Areal, Duas Barras, Rio Claro, Cardoso Moreira, Cachoeiras de Macacu, Campos dos Goytacazes, Natividade e Nova Iguaçu. Constatou-se que o grau de escolaridade influenciou positivamente o desenvolvimento dos apicultores. Esse desenvolvimento também foi afetado pela assistência técnica, pelo manejo da troca de rainha e pela prática da apicultura migratória. Dessa forma, a modernização dos apicultores no sentido de melhorar o nível tecnológico, expandir a produtividade e diversificar a produção passa necessariamente pelo nível de conhecimento do apicultor e pela situação socioeconômica.

Trichomycterus caipora, new species, is described from rio Macabu basin, lagoa Feia drainage, serra de Macaé, southeastern Brazil. The new species is distinguished from its congeners from southern and southeastern Brazil by the combination of: the presence of nine pectoral-fin rays, caudal fin emarginated and high number of opercular and interorpecular odontodes. Ecological notes are presented and putative phylogenetic relationships and characters shared with congeners are discussed.

The variation in chilling sensitivity of mature-green specialty bananas (Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum) and plantains (Musa paradisiaca var. paradisiaca) was examined using four cultivars of bananas and one plantain cultivar stored under various time and temperature combinations. Cold storage for 1 day at 5.0, 7.2, or 10.0 °C (41, 45, or 50 °F) resulted in acceptable fruit quality for up to 8 days at 20.0 °C (68 °F) for `Petite' and `Red Macabu' bananas and `Dominico Harton' plantains. `Grand Nain' and `Yangambi' bananas were considered unmarketable due to moderate to severe graying after 8 days at 20.0 °C when fruit were previously stored for 1 day at 5.0 or 7.2 °C. Storage for 3 days at 10.0 °C was acceptable for all cultivars tested, however 5 days at 10.0 °C resulted in moderate to severe browning and graying of the `Grand Nain' fruit. The traditional Cavendish-type, `Grand Nain', as well as `Petite' and `Yangambi', required temperatures greater than 10.0 °C for a 7-day storage duration while `Red Macabu' bananas could be safely stored for 7 days at 10.0 °C. Plantains could be stored at 7.2 °C for 7 days without visible chilling injury symptoms. The storage of specialty bananas and plantains at or above their minimum safe temperatures resulted in improved uniformity of ripening and overall quality of the fruit due to a decrease in chilling injury symptoms.

Resumo Com o presente estudo, objetivou-se analisar a intensidade e tendência das precipitações intensas no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, a partir de 50 anos de dados diários (1968-2017) de 53 postos pluviométricos. Foram determinadas regiões homogêneas com base na média mensal das precipitações diárias intensas (≥ percentil 95) e analisados quatro indicadores de extremos climáticos: máxima precipitação anual em 1 dia (Rx1day), índice de intensidade diária simples (SDII), precipitação total anual de dias em que a precipitação ≥ percentil 95 (R95p) e precipitação total anual em dias úmidos (PRCPTOT). Para detectar tendências estatisticamente significativas, utilizou-se o teste de Mann-Kendall. A magnitude das tendências foi obtida pelo estimador de Sen. Os resultados evidenciaram duas regiões homogêneas de precipitação intensa. A região 2, composta por áreas das Baixadas Litorâneas, sudeste da região Metropolitana e sul do Norte Fluminense, apresentou precipitação mais intensa que as demais áreas do estado (região 1). A região 2 também apresentou maior quantidade de indicadores de extremos com tendências significativas (ao nível de confiança de 95%), que em sua maioria, foram de aumento de precipitação. No SDII, as magnitudes foram maiores ou iguais a +0,16 mm/dia/ano em Porciúncula, Conceição de Macabu, Cachoeiras de Macacu e Nova Friburgo.

Em 1877, o escritor e jornalista José do Patrocínio publicou Motta Coqueiro ou A pena de morte, ficção-libelo contra a pena de morte. Ficcionalizando os fatos em torno da história d’“A fera de Macabu”, Patrocínio produziu uma narrativa considerada protonaturalista, pela expressão, e ideologicamente comprometida com as teorias raciais da época. Contudo, propõe-se aqui uma leitura alternativa, que deve deixar assinalado que, apesar do uso de modos e formas de expressão e pensamento do final do século XIX brasileiro, o livro de Patrocínio parece realizar um mapa dos afetos na sociedade oitocentista brasileira. Sendo assim, Motta Coqueiro exemplificaria caminhos de uma ficção afro-brasileira que expressa, além das contradições de uma sociedade estruturalmente escravocrata, a produção do ódio que condena a todos.

No dia 21 de novembro de 2000, 250 famílias mobilizadas pelo Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra do Rio de Janeiro (MST/RJ) ocuparam uma fazenda no município de Conceição de Macabu, localizado na região norte do Rio de Janeiro, para reivindicar sua desapropriação. Por meio da análise de uma audiência pública envolvendo representantes do Estado e deste movimento social, pretendo discutir os papéis e posições que cada uma das partes vem assumindo na resolução de disputas agrárias e no encaminhamento de políticas públicas nessa área. Dentro desta discussão, pretendo apontar para as funções de mediação do ministério público; a desestruturação dos órgãos executivos; o apego ao direito formal por parte dos representantes do Judiciário como uma forma de esconder suas orientações políticas; e as possibilidades de atuação dos movimentos sociais diante do quadro de adversidades estruturais impostas pelos aparelhos do Estado.

No presente trabalho objetivou-se compreender a ocorrência integrada das inundações, bem como das intervenções antrópicas na bacia do rio Macabu, Rio de Janeiro, atentando para seus efeitos sobre o uso da terra e cobertura vegetal. Para tanto, criou-se um banco de dados georreferenciados multicriterial em ambiente SIG (ArcGIS 10.6.1), onde foram analisadas as variáveis de declividade, elevação, densidade de drenagem, precipitação e usos da terra para se gerar o modelo do risco socioambiental das áreas sujeitas às inundações, divididas em 4 classes: baixa ou nula, média, alta e muito alta. Juntas, as classes “alta e muito alta” somam 37,8% da bacia. Todos os usos da terra mapeados estão em áreas sujeitas a inundações, notadamente as áreas antrópicas não-agropastoris (78%) e as áreas naturais não florestadas (90,3%). Os resultados obtidos podem auxiliar o planejamento e ordenamento territorial-ambiental da bacia, ou de áreas em condições socioambientais similares.

Bringing up conservation awareness among key stakeholders is essential for water management and it requires motivation and dialogue in order to achieve local and global environmental sustainability. Water management and agriculture must be in agreement to guarantee current and future multiple uses of water. This paper presents the role of outdoor education as a way for citizens to get involved in territory demands. This study-case of participatory monitoring of Macabu River Basin has been carried out since 2012 in Trajano de Moraes, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Firstly, a bibliographic review and search of historical documents offered the basis to the project “River Macabu in action: history, knowledge and life”. It was aimed at linking land use to water quality and involved students from nine different schools. The relationship between surface water and hydrologic cycle was observed through monitoring rainfall at nine pluviometers installed along 70 km of river length, and the water quality at eleven collection points. The project strategy focused on experiencing historical and geographic contexts and understanding the nature’s goods as a heritage of affective value before endowing it with economic one. The project was triggered after the agreement of various societal segments and an effective sharing for the adequacy of different ways of execution. In the first few months the farmers’ resistance to the project had been overcome as they were sensitized by relatives involved in it. After some time, most farmers got connected to territory and were able to understand the state of the river as an extension of their own choices. Then, conservation practices in agriculture became more frequent mainly in the upper part of the watershed acting as links between the urban and the rural population. The methodology developed in this project was acknowledged as a citizenship solution for water by “Market of Solutions” in the 8th World Water Forum held in 2018. The engagement of young people has been noticed in different forums such as the National Conference on Environment. The farmers’ practical knowledge associated to hands-on education and effective participation in actions for water management actions were considered fundamental to the citizens’ comprehension of the environmental conservation. The results showed the benefits from the farmers and their children’s involvement in the management of water and territory. The participation of family farmers in the River Basin Committees is considered highly relevant to the fulfilment of their legal role as core forums of the water management.

Fertilization and/or the accumulation of organic matter from plant residues can influence the composition of soil and litter community. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of P and K fertilization on total faunal and nematode faunal composition and richness in plant litter and soil for 360 days in an area reforested with Acacia auriculiformis (A. Cunn), located in the municipality of Conceição de Macabu in the State of Rio de Janeiro. For each treatment (fertilized and unfertilized plots), samples of litter and soil (to a depth of 5 cm) were collected and transferred into a Berlese-Tüllgren funnels for the extraction of fauna. Mesofauna and macrofauna were quantified, and the major taxa identified. Nematodes were extracted by centrifugal flotation in sucrose solution and identified according to feeding habits. Density (number of individuals m-2) of total fauna, microphages, social insects and saprophages varied significantly per treatment and sampling time in both litter and soil. The total number of individuals collected was 5,127, and the total number of nematodes 894. Phosphorus and potassium fertilization resulted in an increase in total fauna density and richness in the litter due to an increased abundance of social insects, saprophages and herbivores. In the soil, fertilization increased the saprophage and predator densities. Saprophages were the predominant taxa in the litter, while social insects (Formicidae) prevailed in the soil. Litter nematode populations were favored by mineral fertilization. Bacteriophages were the predominant nematode group in both litter and soil.

Objetiva-se explicitar o caráter judaico do livro, que recorre a elementos próprios da Bíblia Hebraica e da tradição judaica, a despeito de seu caráter literário ser próprio do estilo helenístico.AbstractThe present article aims to present how the book of 2 Maccabees are built on a theology of martyrdom, linked to the belief in resurrection, and on an ideology of resistance, which seeks to emphasize the bravery of Judas Macabeu and his soldiers in confronting the Seleucid troops. It aims to make explicit the Jewish character of the book, which uses elements of the Hebrew Bible and the Jewish tradition, despite its literary character in Hellenistic style.ResumenEl presente artículo pretende presentar cómo el libro de 2 Macabeos se construye a partir de una teología del martirio, vinculada a la creencia en la resurrección, y una ideología de la resistencia, la cual busca enfatizar la bravura de Judas Macabeo y sus soldados en el enfrentamiento de las tropas seléucidas. Introdução: As malformações congênitas constituem alterações simples ou múltiplas da estrutura, função e/ou metabolismo que resultam em incapacidade física ou mental, as causas mais freqüentes de morbidade e mortalidade infantil no mundo. A sua etiologia é diversa, podendo ser ou não de base genética. No Brasil aproximadamente 2 a 3% de todos os nascidos vivos são afetados por algum tipo de malformação. Contudo, variações em incidência em até 8% têm sido relatadas segundo o sexo, etnia e local de residência. Objetivos: Avaliar a ocorrência de defeitos congênitos na Região Norte Fluminense, que compreende nove municípios: Campos dos Goytacazes, Macaé, São João da Barra, Conceição de Macabu, São Francisco de Itabapoana, Quissamã, São Fidélis, Carapebus, Cardoso Moreira. Métodos: Foram utilizadas as informações relativas ao período 1999-2005 do Sistema de Informação sobre Nascidos Vivos, SINASC. Foram calculadas as freqüências para as variáveis: município, ano de notificação, categoria de sistema afetado, idade reprodutiva materna e sexo do acometido. Resultados: Em relação à categoria de sistema afetado, ano de notificação e município o número total de malformações notificadas foi 425. Segundo o sexo do acometido e a idade materna houve 440 notificações, sem diferenças significativas (teste t em par de Student p = 0,2181). A prevalência de malformações foi 47/10.000 nascidos vivos (freqüência média anual de 0,46% ± 0,11%). A taxa de defeitos congênitos para o sexo masculino (0,54) foi maior do que para o sexo feminino (0,46), mas não significativamente diferente do esperado (tese c2 pmasculino = 0,7180; pfeminino p = 0,5956). Os defeitos mais freqüentes envolveram os sistemas nervoso central (21% das notificações; 0,097% dos nascidos vivos) e osteomuscular (20,5% das notificações; 0,095% dos nascidos vivos). A maioria (63%) dos acometidos nasceu de mulheres na faixa etária 35-44 anos. Dentre os afetados, a maior freqüência (64%) ocorreu em Campos dos Goytacazes e a menor (0,7%) em Cardoso Moreira. Conclusões: A prevalência de malformações congênitas na Região Norte Fluminense é aproximadamente a metade das taxas relatadas em outros estudos no Brasil, incluindo a cidade de Rio de Janeiro. Uma vez que as taxas de natalidade por faixa etária materna na Região são indistinguíveis das médias nacionais os dados apontam para uma significativa subnotificação de acometidos para o interior do Estado de Rio de Janeiro.

Osteosarcoma is a malignant primary tumor of the bone, which is considered rare in birds. This report describes an osteoblastic osteosarcoma in a scarlet macaw (Ara macao), which was apathetic with progressive weight loss, and had a tumor in the distal portion of the femur and proximal tibiotarsus with ulcerated pododermatitis in the contralateral limb. Euthanasia was elected due to poor diagnosis after radiographic and cytological examination. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry were performed and confirmed the diagnosis of an osteoblastic osteosarcoma with hepatic and pulmonary metastases.

A metodologia de trabalho escolhida foi bibliográfica, mas com inserção na análise documental de vídeo. Constatou-se que o coro tem a função principal do espetáculo, por meio das vozes faladas e cantadas, dos ruídos, a percussão corporal e uso dos corpos escultores como criador de cenários.

In light of its history, Macau is an interesting case study of how colonial policies affect adoption of new technologies such as the Internet. Companhia de Telcomunicações de Macau is the only company licensed to provide telecommunications services in Macau. This study examines: (1) the relationship between the Macau government and CTM as an ISP; (2) the relationship between CTM and other Internet companies in Macau; and (3) the relationship between Internet companies and users in Macau.

O Sapajus libidinosus é um primata do novo mundo popularmente conhecido como macaco-prego, geograficamente distribuído por todo território sul-americano, possui características de inquietude e habilidade de manipulação de ferramentas para a obtenção de alimentos. Este estudo teve por objetivo descrever a morfologia dos seios da dura-máter de Sapajus libidinosus numa perspectiva comparativa. Foram utilizados um total de 3 animais adultos e machos oriundos da Universidade Federal de Goiás e fixados em solução aquosa de formaldeído 10%. No encéfalo de S. libidinosus, foi possível observar a fissura longitudinal, profunda e que divide o mesmo em dois hemisférios, esquerdo e direito. O lobo parietal e frontal apresenta-se relativamente lisoencefálico, mas com giros e sulcos bem definidos e no lobo occipital nota-se a predominância do aspecto lisencefálico. Nota-se a presença de 8 seios da dura-máter, que corresponde de modo geral às descrições para outros primatas como Pan, Papio e homem. Notamos a presença dos seios sagital dorsal, seio sagital ventral, seio transverso, seio reto, seio sigmóide, seio temporal e seio basilar, que são semelhantes a Pan, Papio e homem, a presença do seio parietal semelhante à Saimiri sciureus e a ausência do seio occipital, assim como em Macaca mullata. No macaco prego não foram observados os seios intracavernosos, seio esfenoparietal, seio petroso superior, seio petroso inferior, sendo estes descritos em Pan, Papio e Homem. Sendo assim, estes dados demonstram uma possível maior proximidade evolutiva entre Papio e Pan em relação ao homem do que o macaco Sapajus.

This paper provides valuable insights and references for the design and development of Macau souvenir packaging, contributing to the promotion of Macau souvenir packaging in cultural communication and the tourism industry.

Although there are 5218 Macau scam cases reported since January to October 2020, from the total of the cases, 1420 cases were charged and 2676 were arrested by the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP). This fact can be considered as strong evidence to proof that Macau scam is getting increasingly serious and has the potential to become even worse in the future. Therefore, this study is conducted to investigate the legal meaning of Macau scam, the relevant provision in Malaysian Statute, the methods of proving and the standard of proof applicable in convicting Macau scam crime. Empirical methods of investigation based on available reported cases about Macau scam or fraud are developed herein. Application of such methods will analyse each of the issues highlighted in this study. This study found that Macau's scam means that the fraudulent act deliberately cheats someone to get fast money by making them suffer a loss of money. Besides that, there are provisions that may be applicable to Macau scam; as one of the forms of fraud contained in the Penal Code (Act 574), Section 24, Section 25, Section 415, Section 170 and Section 420. Reviewing cases of fraud as the basis for the Macau scam, it was explicitly stated in most cases that the burden of proof rests with the prosecutor or the group who wished to allege the Macau scam. The standard of proof in civil trials is in the balance of probabilities. The impact of the study is on phone users; victims of Macau scams and legal practitioners in Malaysia. Future studies may be conducted in the field of legal remedies for a Macau scam crime.

Casino capitalism has its dialectical tendencies in Macau. On the one hand, it stimulates economic growth, provides employment, and strengthens the post-colonial state in Macau during the period of economic boom. On the other hand, casino capitalism can widen the income gap between the rich and the poor, generate addictive gambling, and de-legitimize the post-colonial state in Macau during the global and regional economic downturn. The weaknesses of the politico-administrative state in Macau, including the absence of institutional checks and balances, the frail civil society and the relatively docile mass media, have magnified the negative impacts of casino capitalism on Macau. In response to the negative ramifications, the Macau government has taken measures to be more interventionist, to enhance social welfare, and to prepare contingency plans that would tackle the sudden bankruptcy of any casinos. The central government in Beijing also displays contradictory considerations when it deals with Macau's casino development, supporting the casino industry while simultaneously encouraging the Macau government to diversify its economy. Overall, casino capitalism not only has contradictory impacts on the Macau city-state but also reveals the inherent contradictions of Beijing's policy toward the territory's over-dependence on the casino economy.

In order to improve the air quality and living condition in Macau, this paper shows us some environmentally friendly taxis to replace theconventional ones. In this paper, an overall picture of the current situation and tendency of world’s taxies is firstly presented. Secondly, the vehicle emissions of Macau taxi including environmentally friendly ones are detailedly demonstrated and compared. On the basis of feasibility, cost, safety and regulations related to Macau, the existing vehicle models are also comprehensively elaborated and evaluated. At the end of the paper, it will predict possible directions of the development of taxis in the near future of Macau. The analysis and evaluations of vehicle models are all considerate of what really Macau is.

This paper examines herding behavior among Hong Kong investors using announcements of the opening of new casinos in Macau. The results show that there is a difference in the herding behavior toward these “Macau concept” stocks before and after the change in investment sentiment regarding Macau. Similar results are also revealed for the impact of announcements related to the Macau concept. Furthermore, investors in general herd more on selling than on buying upon a corresponding announcement. The evidence that is documented in this paper also suggests that there is herding around exceptional price and trading volume movements in the trading of Macau concept stocks.

The Macau Special Administrative Region has a special urban form. It is located on the coast of the Pearl River Delta, with a land area of only 33.6 square kilometers. The population living here is close to 700,000. It is the region with the highest population density in the world, and its energy mainly depends on imports. With the new coronavirus epidemic, Macau’s tourism industry has been hit hard, and energy expenditures have risen with changes in the international situation. As an important economic support industry in Macau, the energy conservation development of the hotel industry is extremely important. Since 2007, Macau has launched “The Macau Energy Conservation Week, in conjunction with many departments and tourism companies in Macau, and the establishment of the Macau Green Hotel Award in the same year, have had a profound impact on Macau’s energy consumption savings and improved the efficiency of Macau’s hotel industry in terms of energy use. In pursuit of the goal of carbon peaking, the hotel industry in Macau has generally passed the ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management System (EnMS) certification, and most hotels have exceeded the Energy Use Intensity standard assessed by the Cornell Hotel Sustainability Benchmarking Index. Under the concept of green energy and other concepts, the hotel industry in Macau has now begun to use renewable energy for hotel use. Top hotels in Macau decreased by an average of 23.6% in 2021. After the return of Macau’s sovereignty, Macau’s unique political attributes and urban characteristics have different standards for the energy use of the entire industry and the characteristics of laws and regulations, which make it have different standards from mainland China. Based on preliminary research on the energy saving and environmental protection of the hotel industry in Macau, this research collects statistics on the energy saving data of the hotel industry and finally proposes improvements based on the energy utilization and environmental protection of the Macau Special Administrative Region and similar coastal peninsula cities.

Novelists like Austin Coates (City of Broken Promises, 1967) from Great Britain and Henrique de Senna Fernandes (A trança feiticeira, 1993) from Macau, as well as short story writers Deolinda da Conceição (Macau) and Maria Ondina Braga (Portugal), depict life in colonial Macau. While the plots of these works display similarities, Coates’s and Braga’s perspectives are filtered through the lenses of European colonialism and Fernandes and da Conceição work through the legacy of coloniality.

A journalist for a local Macau English-language newspaper recently wrote to me and several other friends and asked us to describe Macau with one word. Many words came to mind: historic, multicultural, casinos, growth, etc.; but the word I chose to suggest does not necessarily come to mind until one has lived here, small. Indeed, Macau is a very small community. At the end of September 2007, the resident population was 531,400 and the territory occupied 28.6 sq km, although the largest concentration of population lives within the 9.3 sq km area of “Peninsular Macau” (DSEC, Macao, 2008). In terms of both population and land mass, then, Macau is a very small community, and this fact has influenced the status, functions and forms of English within the territory.

Macau was under colonial rule by Portugal for a long time. Due to the colonial government’s lack of attention paid to education and Macau's unique dual social structure, the Chinese community in Macau gradually formed the phenomenon of providing education by associations. This paper focuses on the phenomenon of non-tertiary education association-running schools in Macau and divides the history of association-running schools in non-tertiary education in Macau for more than 100 years into three stages, namely: the period of charitable schools (1890s-1960s); the period of transformation (1960s-1980s); the period of philanthropic Schools (1980s-); This paper argues that with the development of economy and society, the non-tertiary education community in Macau has realized the transformation from charity to philanthropy. At the same time, With the implementation of 15-year free education in Macau, the structure of non-tertiary education subjects has become stable. For associations trying to enter the field of non-tertiary education, the likely direction is to develop special education, professional education, and characteristics education.

AbstractCasino gambling has become an important part of American popular culture. It has also become a cultural commodity that can be exported. This paper examines the frenzied development currently underway in the city of Macau, the former Portuguese colony that was returned to China in 1999. The small territory of Macau has long been known as a center for casino gambling in Asia. But since 2002, American investment has entered the scene in an effort to recreate the city in the image of Las Vegas. We consider what is happening in Macau as an example of cultural globalization, a concept that refers to cultural hegemony by powerful nations over weaker ones, leading to the homogenization of cultures in the likeness of the powerful nations. We discuss the history of Macau, the development it is now undergoing, the potential for Macau to surpass Las Vegas as the world's most profitable center for gambling revenue, and implications of Macau's growth for the concept of cultural globalization. We suggest that cultural globalization may be a two‐way process and that the success of Macau may force Las Vegas to change in order to remain competitive for Asian gamblers.

Abstract The Visual and Verbal Image of Well Behaviour Poster Campaign in Macau. Macau is one of the country in Asia that is known for its gambling tourism objects. As a country that is built its economic bases from tourism sector, the goverment of Macau needs to socialize good behaviour to citizens and tourits of Macau through behaviour posters that hung along the crossing bridge. Those posters convey the message of several important good behaviour that need to do by the citizent and tourist in order to maintain the peaceful of neighbourhood. Those posters use three language to send verbal language, wich are Chinese, Portuguese, and english. For visual structures, those posters contain comical character, background, and speech bubble. In semantic principles, those posters have semantic, sintactic, and pragmatic functions. Throuhg comical style, those poster become visually interesting and the message can be communicated well. AbstrakCitra Visual dan Verbal dalam Poster Kampanye Berprilaku Baik di Macau. Macau merupakan negara kecil di Asia yang terkenal dengan objek pariwisata perjudiannya. Sebagai negara yang membangun perekonomiannnya dari sektor pariwisata, pemerintah Macau memandang perlu untuk mensosialisasikan sikap dan perilaku baik bagi penduduk dan pendatang di Macau , melalui poster-poster perilaku yahg dipasang di sepanjang jembatan penyebrangan. Poster-poster ini berisi perilaku-perilaku baik yang harus diperhatikan , baik berupa anjuran maupun larangan, agar tercipta ketenangan dan ketentraman lingkungan yang diinginkan. Poster-poster tersebut menggunakan tiga bahasa sebagai penyampai pesan verbal, yaitu Bahasa Cina, Bahasa Portugis, dan Bahasa Inggris. Sedangkan secara struktur visual, poster-poster tersebut memiliki unsur tokoh karikatur, latar visual dan gelembung percakapan. Dalam kaidah semiotika, poster-poster tersebut memenuhi fungsi semantik, sintaksis, dan pragmatik. Melalui gaya komik, diharapkan poster-poster tersebut menjadi menarik dan pesan serta larangan yang ingin disampaikan dapat dikomunikasikan dengan baik.

Macau passengers would speak to the management, their friends and family, and media and even choose boycott the companies when they feel dissatisfied with their travel experiences. The present study aimed to investigate the behavior of passengers in Macau toward low-cost carriers. A qualitative approach was adopted using a sample of 20 respondents who had previously submitted complaints to low-cost carriers. Semi-structured questions were asked in the in-depth interview. The results demonstrated the rationale behind the complaints. Perception of complaint behavior of Macau low-cost carriers’ passengers was discovered. Recommendations were proposed to provide insights for industrial practitioners.

This study investigated variance in the structure, functions and implications of young adults’ dual filial piety beliefs in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan using the dual filial piety model (DFPM). A total of 879 Chinese college students participated in the study, including 424 students in Hong Kong, 155 in Macau and 300 in Taiwan. Information on these young adults’ filial piety beliefs and life satisfaction was collected. The results showed that while measures of filial piety beliefs performed well in general in the three regions, there were some regional differences. Young adults in Taiwan and Macau endorsed stronger reciprocal filial piety beliefs than young adults in Hong Kong, whereas young adults in Macau and Taiwan endorsed stronger authoritarian filial piety beliefs than their peers in Taiwan. In Taiwan, both reciprocal and authoritarian filial piety positively contributed to young adults’ life satisfaction. However, only reciprocal filial piety mattered for life satisfaction in Macau, and only authoritarian filial piety in Hong Kong.

The Macau Special Administrative Region has experienced a large number of changes before and after the Transfer of Sovereignty over Macau from the Portuguese Republic to the People’s Republic of China during the late 1999s. One of the most significant changes within the government environment should be the reform of civil servant appraisal system. Currently, the civil servants in Macau are using the new civil servant appraisal system framework under the Law Number 31/2004 “Regime geral de avaliação do desempenho dos trabalhadores da Administração Pública”. As the new appraisal system attracts a large number of attentions for research, a satisfied number of literature reviews are stored in the current research bank. However, the literature reviews and research studies about the former civil servant appraisal system framework under the Law Number 87/89/M “Estatuto dos Trabalhadores da Administração Pública de Macau” were mostly written in either Chinese language or Portuguese language. Only very few English written research studies concern the former civil servant appraisal system under the Law Number 87/89/M “Estatuto dos Trabalhadores da Administração Pública de Macau”. Therefore, this paper provides the opportunities for international and English readers to understand the administrative law reform within the Macau environment.

Smart cities are the mainstream trend of modern city development. With the promotion of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area policies, Macau, as one of the four central cities in the Greater Bay Area, has pioneered the development of smart cities. The development goal of the smart city is to use modern electronic information technology to manage, coordinate, share efficiently, and interoperate the city's transportation, logistics, energy resources, and communication services. Comprehensive perception and information collection are the basis for its smart urban management. As one of the important node devices at the perception level of the smart city, smart street lights in Macau are not only the lighting infrastructure, but also include environmental monitoring, video surveillance, communication networks, Internet of Things, information interaction, charging piles and other economic functions of the people's livelihood. Under the above premise, this article discusses the urban policies, applications and prospects of smart streetlamps in Macau. At the same time, it compares the social nature and related policies of the mainland, analyzes the particularity of building smart streetlamps in Macau, and based on the application of smart streetlamps in Macau, propose optimization and development suggestions to promote the construction and development of Macau's smart city.

This article analyzes articulations among urban enclaves, finance capital, and glass architecture by exploring MGM’s corporate investments in the Las Vegas CityCenter development and the Chinese enclave of Macau. CityCenter is an unsuccessful $9 billion master-planned urban community financed by MGM and Dubai World. Macau is a former Portuguese colony and Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China which has, since its return to the PRC in 1999, replaced Las Vegas as the world’s most lucrative site of casino gaming revenue. Taken together, CityCenter and Macau are illustrative of the political economy and cultural logics of financialization. Foreign investment from Las Vegas entrepreneurs has vitrified Macau, transforming it into a phantasmagoria of glass resorts. Macau in turn plays a crucial functional role in capitalism’s recomposition in East Asia, similar to the autochthonous role of the Italian city-states of Venice and Genoa in the historical origins of capitalism. In order to ‘read’ the cities of Las Vegas and Macau, I explore intertextual legibilities among fictitious capital that relies on glass fiber-optic technology to enable grand architectural projects; expressionist fictional representations of glass architecture and its utopian transformative potential; and glass buildings that themselves dissimulate in a manner not unlike fiction.

This study will begin by locating Thomas Ligotti within the literature of the strange, a genre that, today, is threatened by its own writers involved in a consumerist and capitalist system. Subsequently, emphasis will be placed on the relationship between Lovecraft and Ligotti, analyzing how Ligotti connects with 20th century Lovecraftian fiction, recovering the true narrative myth and, from this, a macabre unrealism constitutive of the literature of the strange of the 21st century. Este estudio comenzará ubicando a Thomas Ligotti en el seno de la literatura de lo extraño, género que, hoy en día, se ve amenazado por sus propios escritores involucrados en un sistema consumista y capitalista. Posteriormente, se hará hincapié en la relación existente entre Lovecraft y Ligotti, analizando cómo este conecta con la ficción lovecraftiana del siglo XX, recuperando el verdadero miedo narrativo y, a partir de esto, un irrealismo macabro constitutivo de la literatura de lo extraño del siglo XXI.

Upacara Macaru Sanak Magodel di Sasih Kesanga Desa Adat Abiantuwung, Kabupaten Tabanan, karena dalam upacara macaru sasih kesanga di wilayah desa Adat lain, hanya menggunakan caru panca sata tanpa tambahan “suku pat” atau hewan berkaki empat apapun, tetapi desa adat Abiantuwung menggunakan hewan anak sapi untuk tambahannya serta dilaksanakan setiap tahun. Abstract This article examines Portuguese colonial and military activities at Macau during the Boxer Uprising of 1900, connecting developments across the border in Guangdong with initiatives undertaken by the colonial authorities in Macau. The Portuguese perceived the situation to be serious enough that substantial reinforcements were eventually sent from the metropole, in addition to various other measures taken to strengthen the colony’s defenses. Portugal also used Macau as a base to coordinate the operations of its consulates in China, and exploited the Boxer debacle to press for new concessions and other advantages at China’s expense. At the end, it is hoped that the limited and relatively unknown role played by Portugal, in conjunction with the larger kaleidoscope of events around Macau, may be better illuminated.
