Texto completo da fonteThis thesis examines the trajectory of non-European musical instruments acquired for Paris museums during the colonial period. It considers the effects of the patrimonialisation of these objects of use, which come from a variety of origins and acquisition contexts, on their material conservation from their acquisition at the end of the nineteenth century to the present day. Putting cultural artefacts into collections leads to the introduction of new procedures, sometimes far from those used for their previous purposes. These practices reflect the new functions assigned to the object, whose material preservation has become essential. The preservation of musical instruments raises specific questions relating to the evocation, maintenance and even reactivation of their functionality. In the case of non-European collections, these complex issues are combined with the problems of conserving and displaying an object that is culturally distant to both professionals and visitors. The paths taken by these relocated instruments, which are closely linked to the development of ethnology and to French and European colonial history, raise complex issues from the point of view of both the history of collections and public policy. Based on a historical and material analysis of a corpus of lutes held at the Musée de la Musique (Cité de la Musique - Philharmonie de Paris) and the Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, acquired from 1872 onwards by the Instrumental Museum of the Conservatoire National de Musique and the Musée d'Ethnographie du Trocadéro, this research explores the links between museum traces and colonial memories. As the practitioner's gesture cannot be dissociated from the context in which it takes place, this dissertation aims to reposition museum practices in their historical and institutional contexts. The physical trace thus becomes a witness to the way in which these instruments are perceived, shedding light on the museum history of collections from colonial contexts at a time when new thinking, prompted by debates on their acquisition, is aiming to take ethical responsibility for these cultural artefacts

Texto completo da fonteThe main cause of the decline in sea turtle populations is attributed to excess mortality due to coastal and oceanic fisheries. The leatherback sea turtle has the most extensive range and is therefore submitted to variable environmental conditions when at sea. The nesting populations of leatherback turtles in French Guiana are the largest in the world. Since 1993, an alarming decline is observed. Using the Argos satellite system, we have studied the movements of 32 females in relation to oceanographic conditions. Twenty of them were investigated during the nesting period. Our data, obtained since 2000, show that the females remain on the continental shelf between their successive comings ashore for laying. At sea they remain distributed mainly in shallow waters at the border between French Guiana and Surinam, i. E. In a 40 km radius area centred on 5. 9ʿN and 53. 9ʿW. Importantly, their distribution overlaps with the areas used by fisheries, thus favouring incidental catches of sea turtles not only in coastal waters but also on all the continental shelf. Previous works in the Pacific and Indian Oceans have suggested that leatherback turtles use distinct corridors and are passively transported by oceanic currents. Here we show instead that females from French Guiana tracked for up to 16 months and over 10000 km dispersed widely in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. They moreover moved actively in three main directions: west, north and east, and frequently opposing surface currents. In addition, they used different dispersion patterns between years and, from their changes in directions and localizations, they seem to forage on the cold side of warm eddies where industrial tuna fisheries operate. Thus, oceanic routes of leatherbacks do not cross fishing areas by pure coincidence. This study reveals the need of long term, large scale, and pluridisciplinary approaches for conservation of migrating critically endangered species

Texto completo da fonteThis work aims at studying the several divers properties (Physico-mechanical, biological and chemical) of white Mulberry (Morus alba L.), as the leading material used in fabrication of Iranian lutes. The vibrational characteristic of this species is measured in relation with secondary metabolites (extractives) as well as three artisanal hygro-thermal treatments adapted to laboratory scale.White Mulberry wood is characterized with a moderate specific modulus, less than expected damping and a low anisotropy between three directions. It is specified that this species cannot be described with the same standards as other woods used in European classical instruments. Using independent and successive extractions reveal that two types of extraneous compounds govern the damping in this wood, some raising it, when the rest have a decreasing effect. These compounds are not all extractable by the same solvents.Long time immersion in water at ambient temperature hardly changes mechanical properties of the species, however, it can leave wood with irreversible defects. Hot water treatment at 70°C results for damping and moduli to be increased and decreased respectively. These changes are time related. Several mild desorption and adsorption cycles, seem to reduce damping without greatly endangering the moduli. White Mulberry wood is found to be very durable towards fungi, even in extreme conditions. Water leaching seems to be affectless on this species resistance towards basidiomycetes. This wood is rated moderately durable towards termites and becomes sensible after water leaching. Extractives seem to play important role in this wood natural resistance, as they are found to have toxic effect on termites. Resorcinol, a phenol, is the leading compound in the extractives of white Mulberry. Fatty acids, sterols, higher hydrocarbons, and aromatic compounds are also found as the constituents of secondary metabolites. Resorcinol is documented to cause irritations close to what is normally experienced by the fabricants working with white Mulberry for a long time

Texto completo da fonteAdequate knowledge of population dynamics is the first step in establishing a successful conservation strategy. In the case of leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), information on population dynamics is patchy because of the limited assess to individuals, either spatially or temporally. Nevertheless, in the face of the decline in several nesting populations in the Pacific Ocean, the initiation of management policies is urgent. Therefore, I focused my studies on elucidating the main parameters that drive population dynamic of female leatherbacks nesting in French Guiana and Suriname. The results of this work suggest that the number of nests, classically used as an index of population size in sea turtle research, is a biased estimator of female abundance. Indeed, since 1970, the number of females has increased faster that the number of nests. This difference is due to the diminution of reproductive investment related to the climatic variations during this period. Our results confirm that conservation policies should focus on adult survival rate. However, whereas the accidental capture of turtles by fisheries on the French Guiana coast appears to be the major threat for the population, the matrix projections reveal that the population is apparently relatively resistant to this pressure. Nevertheless, the demonstrated sensitivity of some leatherback populations in the Pacific Ocean with respect to accidental capture suggests that fishing regulations to reduce accidental capture in the French Guiana and Suriname region are a necessary component to maintaining the leatherback nesting population

Texto completo da fonteSea turtles are increasingly threatened by the direct and indirect effects of human activities. Their life cycle is complex, shared between various, and often very distant, habitats. Their conservation therefore requires identifying the habitats occupied at each stage of life and the migration routes between these different habitats. While the spatial ecology of adult turtles is relatively well known, particularly through satellite monitoring, the situation is not the same for juveniles which pelagic development phase remains largely unobserved. In that context, numerical simulation constitutes an appropriate tool to explore the dispersal of juvenile sea turtles from their natal beaches. Until now, simulations were mostly performed under the assumption that juveniles disperse passively with oceanic currents. In this PhD thesis we present STAMM (Sea Turtle Active Movement Model), a new model of active dispersal that aims to go beyond the initial hypothesis of passive drift. In STAMM, juvenile sea turtles move under the influence of ocean currents and swimming movements motivated by the search for favorable habitats. This model is applied here to the study of the dispersal of juveniles from three sea turtle populations: leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) of the Western Pacific and the Northwest Atlantic Oceans, and loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) of the Western Indian Ocean. Our results show that, although ocean currents broadly shape juvenile dispersal areas, simulations including habitat-driven movements provide more realistic results than passive drift simulations. Habitat-driven movements prove to deeply structure the spatial and temporal distribution of juveniles. In particular, they induce seasonal latitudinal migrations that reduce cold induce mortality. They also push simulated individuals to concentrate in productive areas that cannot be accessed through pure passive drift. These results challenge the classical view of juveniles circulating passively around oceanic gyres. They should rapidly be taken into account for the implementation of targeted conservation measures concerning juvenile sea turtles

This paper discusses the personal transformations that occurred in the lives of some of the relatives of militants involved in the conflict called Guerrilha do Araguaia, starting from the breaking of family ties and seeking the whereabouts of their missing relatives. It also discusses how they reconstruct their memories about the missing relative. Brazil was under intense military dictatorial regime, more specifically in the late 60's, when the PCdoB (Communist Party of Brazil) decided to send to the Araguaia region (between the current states of Para, Tocantins and Maranhão) some of their militants in order to implement a guerrilla inspired by the Maoist model. About 60 people were sent to the region, mainly young people who, in most cases, were at risk of death and/or might go through strong retaliation if they continued to live in the large cities due to political repression. Backed by the militant's standards of political cohesion, risk of life and professional skills, the Party went through the selection process. The next step was the process of separating the militants from their families. This separation was partially mitigated by the Party which, during some time, used to bring news from the militants through notes and letters. Then, at the moment when the Communists were discovered and attacked by the armed forces, there was a huge silence that coincided with deaths and imprisonments of the Party's heads all over the main cities of the country, leaving dozens of families without any further news about their relatives and without knowing what might have happened to them. With the advent of an Amnesty in 1979, many relatives gathered and got organized in order to seek information about the whereabouts of their relatives. This is the context within which this research works on the proposed objectives
