The first botanical gardens in Europe were established for the study of medicinal, poisonous, and herbal plants by students of medicine or pharmacy at universities. As the natural sciences became increasingly important in the 19th Century, botanical gardens additionally took on the role of public educational institutions. Since then, learning from living nature with the aim of developing technical applications, namely biomimetics, has played a special role in botanical gardens. Sir Joseph Paxton designed rainwater drainage channels in the roof of the Crystal Palace for the London World’s Fair in 1881, having been inspired by the South American giant water lily (Victoria amazonica). The development of the Lotus-Effect® at the Botanical Garden Bonn was inspired by the self-cleaning leaf surfaces of the sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera). At the Botanic Garden Freiburg, a self-sealing foam coating for pneumatic systems was developed based on the self-sealing of the liana stems of the genus Aristolochia. Currently, botanical gardens are both research institutions and places of lifelong learning. Numerous botanical gardens provide biomimetics trails with information panels at each station for self-study and guided biomimetics tours with simple experiments to demonstrate the functional principles transferred from the biological model to the technical application. We present eight information panels suitable for setting up education about biomimetics and simple experiments to support guided garden tours about biomimetics.

"Lotus" is known as "living fossil", is one of the earliest origin plants in angiosperms, in the long history of thousands of years, the form and use of lotus has changed many times. Under the wisdom and cultural choices of the people, "lotus" elements began to develop, which is not only a decorative element of garden architecture, but also widely used as a medium for conveying feelings and spiritual sustenance. Starting from the development history and functional characteristics of lotus, this paper studies the material application and composition characteristics of "lotus" elements in ancient garden architecture, explores the symbolic meaning and cultural connotation behind it, and provides reference value for the application of other traditional elements in modern architecture in the future.

The combined pollution of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is very common in China and needs urgent addressal. The use of resistant garden plants for phytoremediation accounts for both ecological restoration and ornamental value and has great application potential. In this study, cadmium (Cd) and pyrene (Pyr) were used as contaminants, and the growth responses, enrichment characteristics, and physiological responses of common garden plants were studied using greenhouse pot experiments. The Cd-Pyr compound stress affected the growth responses of plants. Chinese Pennisetum and lotus exhibited the best Cd-Pyr removal effect: the removal rates of Cd were 68.91% and 60.25%, respectively, and those of Pyr were 77.52% and 63.74%, respectively. Compound stress promoted the protective enzymes of ryegrass, lotus, and Chinese Pennisetum. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content in the leaves of the five plants was higher than that in the control group, whereas the chlorophyll and carotenoid content were lower. Overall, the order of resistance of the five garden plants tested under Cd-Pyr compound stress was: Chinese Pennisetum, lotus > ryegrass > Hemerocallis, Purple Coneflower.

According to the manuscript of Bustanussalatin by Nuruddin Ar Raniry, in 1637 Sultan Iskandar Thani built a private royal garden called Taman Ghairah (Ghairah Garden). The seventeenth-century garden of Aceh still holds some questions because most of its objects are no longer found in Banda Aceh. Three buildings such as: Gunongan, Kandang and Pintô Khôp which are close to the former Sultan’s palace, are believed to be the remains of the garden. This present study is architectural research that incorporates direct observation and semiotic study on the garden simulation. The simulation is based on the Bustanussalatin manuscript. It is found that the existence of several symbols carry out meanings which relate to the influences of Islamic and pre-Islamic cultures in the past. Meru, tree of life, lotus, and banjaran sari may have derived from pre-Islamic culture, while the river, mosque and floral symbols indicate the presence of Islamic influence. This article underlines that Taman Ghairah has Islamic and Pre-Islamic cultural influences, reflecting the convergence of diverse backgrounds in Acehnese culture.

The Rajput princes of South Asia in the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries built beautiful palaces with gardens and commissioned manuscript paintings that rivaled those of their Mughal contemporaries. Although the Hindu Rajputs and Muslim Mughals were variously allies and foes, neither political relations nor religious faith prevented artistic exchanges from occurring between them. Just as the Mughals embraced and internalized Indic forms such as the chhatri, the Rajputs likewise appropriated forms such as the four-part garden known as the chahar bagh, not as a direct transfer but a reworking and renegotiation of form and expression. While the Rajput chahar baghs are the only ones to have attracted the attention of historians, most likely because they fit neatly into a recognized architectural type, Rajput patrons also built other kinds of gardens with rectilinear and curving parterres, deep pools with “floating” pavilions, lotus gardens, and orchards resembling sacred groves. Some of these appear in Mughal sites too, typically inserted into a chahar bagh. The essay looks at how typological forms were shared and adapted by the Mughals and Rajputs, and asks what such forms may have meant to their respective patrons. It concludes by proposing that the definition of art historical fields—divided along religious lines between Islam and Hinduism—often impedes such inquiries.

Abstract ‘Situ’ Lotus and ‘Situ’ Cibuntu are small ponds located in urban areas at Cibinong Science Center-Botanical Garden, National Research and Innovation Agency, Indonesia. This study was conducted to determine the development of the introduced freshwater shrimp Macrobrachium lanchesteri in that ponds. Observations were carried out in January and February 2019. There are four sampling points in each pond. The number of shrimp obtained at Lotus Pond is more than Cibuntu Pond. The average total length and weight of shrimp obtained at Lotus Pond during the first observation were 1.61 – 2.55 cm and 0.07 – 0.20 gram, while the second was 1.67 – 2.27 cm and 0.11 – 0.31 gram. Meanwhile, M. lanchesteri obtained at Cibuntu Pond in the first observation had an average total length of 2.20 – 2.63 cm and weight 0.16 – 0.20 gram; and when the second sampling was 2.27 – 3.00 cm and 0.16 – 0.34 gram. Proximate analysis of shrimp from Cibuntu Pond showed that this shrimp’s protein, fat, ash, crude fiber, and carbohydrate content were 58.68%; 10.70%; 15.31%; 7.70%, and 7.61%, respectively. The water quality observed in both ponds is still good and can support the shrimp’s life. Utilization of this shrimp as an alternative source of protein can be done if pond water quality is always maintained in the future.

Relevance. Introduction and variety study of flower and ornamental crops is one of the main tasks of botanical gardens, which aims to expand the promising assortment for domestic floriculture.Results. In the period from 2018 to 2020 varieties of hybrid iris (Iris x hybrida hort.) from the garden group “tall bearded” were studied in the Stavropol Botanical Garden. The presented 13 varieties belong to foreign selection. Basically, the varieties are characterized by medium or early flowering periods with an average duration of 11-15 days. In the course of the study, biometric characteristics, the economic and biological properties of the varieties were analyzed. The varieties with the longest duration and productivity of flowering were identified. The ability to bear fruit, which is important for further breeding work, was noted in three varieties: Autumn Circus, Pallida Variegata, Immortality. The main disease that harms the studied culture is heterosporiosis. The most resistant to diseases are the varieties Afternoon In Rio, Bye Bye Blues, Pallida Variegata (up to 10% damage). The detected pests (flea beetle, aphid, mole cricket, etc.) generally cause minor damage to the studied plants. In the assessment of decorativeness, 11 parameters were analyzed using a 100-point scale and taking into account the conversion factor. The color, size, shape of the flower, aroma, inflorescence, duration and abundance of flowering, resistance to adverse weather conditions, decorative vegetative part of plants, originality, condition of plants were taken into account. As a result of the variety study, 9 highly decorative varieties were identified: Bye Bye Blues, Stardock, Autumn Circus, Lotus Land, Power Point, Good Day Oregon, Lorilee, Conjuration, Afternoon In Rio.

Mimura, M. 2013. Genetic and phenotypic variation in Lotus japonicus (Regel) K. Larsen, a model legume species. Can. J. Plant Sci. 93: 435–444. Lotus japonicus is a model legume species with more than 90% of its gene space determined; however, its ecological and evolutionary background is little known. The genetic and phenotypic variation of this model species was investigated within the Japanese Archipelago, where it exists in various climates and has experienced repeated vegetative shifts in conjunction with historical climate changes, using nuclear microsatellite loci and common garden experiments. The partial Mantel test was performed to detect the influence of phylogeographic effects on phenotypic variation among accessions along environmental gradients. Western Japan showed more complex genetic population structures than northern Japan, which may reflect past population dynamics. The total biomass demonstrated clinal variation with a climatic variable (ClimatePC). The trend was significant in a partial Mantel test when controlling for genetic distance, which is independent of the environmental distance. This suggests adaptive divergence within the Japanese Archipelago. With highly accessible genome information, L. japonicus appears to be a promising species for future ecological and evolutionary studies.

Llobet, M., Vignolio, O. R., Savé, R. and Biel, C. 2012. Above- and below-ground interactions between Lotus tenuis and Cynodon dactylon under different fertilization levels. Can. J. Plant Sci. 92: 45–53. Mixtures of legumes and grasses are recommend for xeric garden fields, landscape restorations and to improve productivity, digestibility and quality of grasslands and pastures, due to the complementarity in the use of resources, their resistance to wide edaphoclimatic conditions and the nitrogen-fixing ability of the legume. However, legumes persistence is poor. Two greenhouse studies examined the relative importance of above- and below-ground competition and root physiological attributes between a legume Lotus tenuis and a grass bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) under two fertilization levels. The plants were arranged using the ″Divided pot" technique during 34 wk. Root competition was more important on the performance of both species than shoot competition. Cynodon dactylon had greater nutrient use efficiency than L. tenuis. The low root hydraulic resistance and high specific root length of C. dactylon could enhance its ability to explore the soil and compete for water and nutrients more efficiently than L. tenuis, which compensates for these characteristics with a higher root:shoot ratio than C. dactylon. Although mechanisms involved in root competition between species are not fully understood, our results show that root physiological and morphologic traits contribute to understanding the responses of the species in mixture.

Research of the flora of some areas of the Central Russian forest-steppe shows that a number of plants has deviations from the main species characteristics. The fact that there is a continuous series of variations from individual to species level in nature has long been known for a long time (Darwin, 1991). The reasons and results of this are very different and unpredictable. The ability of plants to change their phenotype is genetically determined. The scope of intraspecific differentiation depends on many external causes. The intraspecific potential of plants reveals itself when ecological situation and geographical fragmentation modify. In result, populations which significantly differ from the main genotype are formed. The impact of new environmental conditions is shown in the examples of Genista tinctoria L., Achillea millefolium L., Salvia pratensis L. The Trifolium lupinaster or Lupinaster pentaphyllus is an example of the introduction of geographically distant genetically stable races. Some species can be represented by different morphobiotypes. For example, erect (haying) and lying (pasture) forms of Lotus corniculatus, Medicago falcata, Astragalus onobrychis. There are some transitional forms. Populations of tall and low growing Anemone sylvestris were observed. A pronounced manifestation of intraspecific diversity is the polychrome of flowers. It was found in рlants from different families: species of iris, Schrenka tulip (Tulipa suaveolens), lily of the Saranka (Lilium pilosiusculum) and others. The collection of the botanical garden for over 20 years contains garden forms of plants of natural flora, which appeared due to spontaneous new formations. These are variegated forms of Aegopodium podagraria and Galeobdolon luteum. The results of the introduction of species and intraspecific diversity of rare and economically valuable plants in the Botanical garden of the Voronezh state University are presented.

The results of studying the variability of a number of quantitative and qualitative characteristics in a model sample of varieties of herbaceous peony with a Japanese flower shape to identify genotypes that differ in variety-specific characteristics are presented. The investigated sample is formed on the basis of the collection of the genus Paeonia L. laboratory of ornamental plants MBG. In the course of the study, variety-specific characteristics were established for a number of cultivars. 2 short ('Bu-Te', 'West Elkton') and 3 tall ('Yellow King', 'Hit Parade', 'Lotus Queen') varieties were selected. 3 grades are marked — 'Mrs. Wilder Bankroft', Midnight Sun, 'Neon' — with consistently low absolute values of the peduncle diameter at the base. 2 large-flowered ('Gold Standard', 'Surprise') and 2 small-flowered ('Bu-Te', 'Gay Paree') cultivars were identified. It was found that the largest sizes of the staminodium zone are distinguished by 'Hit Parade' and 'John van Leeuwen'. The least common variations of the bush type (in the full flowering phase) were recorded in 4 varieties 'Rahoomon', 'Feather Top', 'Largo' (compact) and 'Mr. G.F. Hemerik' (spreading). There are 2 cultivars ('Isani Gidui', 'Fairy') with probably not typical for representatives of this garden group, the type of leaf shape — Paeonia mlokosewitschii. 8 varieties were identified ('Philomele', 'Fairy', 'Okinava', 'Mirage', as well as 'Isani Gidui','Yellow King','Bu-Te', 'Walter Mains'), characterized by relatively sparsely distributed morphological characteristics associated with the shape of the leaf segment. The variety 'Akron' with the original (for the sample under study) variant of stem pigmentation was selected.

Roman tombs were often beautified by commemorative gardens. These loci were the result of a synthesis of religious attitudes towards burials and gardens, and they signified the ancient connection between commemoration and land ownership. These gardens were often termed “farms”, “orchards” or “estates” in epitaphs implying that the cultivated space was as important to the commemorators as the tombs were. The presence of these gardens around tombs offered a pleasant locale for an eternal dwelling, but more importantly they provided a productive garden to help pay for its upkeep. Roman necropoleis were not lonely places, but landscapes filled with exuberant plantings of flowers, fruit trees and vines emblematic of the ideal Roman locus amoenus.

The article deals with the issue of semiotic and cognitive potential of a garden as a compositional form (“Ogrody” by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz). Silva rerum, florilegia, hortus act as its genre presupposition in European artistic tradition. We define the semiotic potential of a “garden” through the system of symbolic meanings: garden as a collection, locus amoenus, sphere of potentiality or ordering, garden as a memory space, intellectual space, etc. The garden via a compositional form of this text and the space of thought functions as an iconic sign of memory. Each object of the past, being replaced by a sign, receives localization in our memory and becomes a “text”. This allows us “to read” the past in the absence of an immediate reception. Garden acquires the properties of textuality and a semiotic object. Hence Iwaszkiewicz considers six gardens in “Ogrody” as a model of his life. Memory is a nonlinear space. Therefore, transitions between gardens are only arbitrary, associative. At the same time garden as a compositional form becomes the cognitive tool of identity. Topology of this memory space (configuration of people, books, music, which become signs) is the cognitive map of the “self (selfhood, selfness). The self-referent structures create the illusion: I (the one who writes) is combined with that person from the past (also I), which he recalls. Nonetheless, all narratives about selfhood are only “the map, but not a territory” (A. Korzybski).

The Charleston Area Children's Garden Project is a community-sponsored initiative affiliated with the Clemson Univ. Coastal Research and Education Center and the Landscapes for Learning Program. The Project transforms vacant lots and other unused spaces into neighborhood outdoor learning centers. Garden activities are free and open to all. The children plan, plant, and tend the garden under the supervision and guidance of adult Garden Leaders. Whatever is grown, the children take home. A “sidewalk learning session” is held in the garden each week. At these sessions, the garden manager, parents, neighbors, or visitors teach the youngsters about garden-related topics from insects to siphons, from origami to pickling, and a multitude of other topics designed to stimulate learning and child participation. The Project is designed to give children a hands-on learning experience outside the classroom setting, to make neighborhoods more attractive, and to build a sense of community. The Project is totally funded by grant monies and has grown from one garden in 2000 to ten gardens in 2004. Gardens are planted with the involvement of neighborhood associations, the Boys and Girls Clubs, the Homeless Shelter, and in conjunction with after-school programs. The Project makes use of such resources as The Growing Classroom and the Junior Master Gardener Teaching Guide. An array of program materials has been developed that are designed for use in the coastal communities of South Carolina.

Green technology best management practices such as rain gardens are often used to retrofit and mitigate the footprints of buildings and impervious cover in watersheds. Rain gardens are a recent technology created to help remedy water abuses. A rain garden promotes the environmental benefits of storm water mitigation, water conservation, groundwater recharge, and reduced waterbody pollution. This research documents the process of implementing a rain garden from initiation through completion on the campus of the University of Delaware in the White Clay Creek National Wild and Scenic River watershed. The design considered the surrounding drainage area, infiltration rates, and plant selection. Through this project the researcher sought to create a demonstration that could inspire the public to create rain gardens. Initial goals of the research included preventing standing water from remaining in the garden after a four-day period, avoiding amendments to the native soil, and foregoing the removal of excavated soil from the rain garden depression off the site. In addition, no plant species were to be planted within the rain garden depression that were not native to within a five-hundred mile radius of Newark, Delaware. From this research, recommendations were generated for those wishing to install a rain garden. These include establishing initial goals, involving stakeholders, considering alternative overflow outlets, and inspecting soils to at least a 6-foot (1.83 m) depth. Further recommendations include stabilizing the contributing drainage area; utilizing aged, triple shredded hardwood mulch; and considering berms for use in capturing runoff and regulating outflows. In addition to mitigating the impacts of stormwater runoff from the buildings and parking lots in the watershed, the rain garden also serves as an outdoor education and research laboratory on campus.

Elizabeth Kryder-Reid examines the origins of California's mission gardens and explores their reception and their contribution to cultural memory. The evidence presented in "Perennially New": Santa Barbara and the Origins of the California Mission Garden shows that the iconic image of the mission garden was created a century after the founding of the missions in the late eighteenth century, and two decades before the start of the Mission Revival architectural style. The locus of their origin was Mission Santa Barbara, where in 1872 a Franciscan named Father Romo, newly arrived from a posting in Jerusalem, planted a courtyard garden reminiscent of the landscapes that he had seen during his travels around the Mediterranean. This invented garden fostered a robust visual culture and rich ideological narratives, and it played a formative role in the broader cultural reception of Mission Revival garden design and of California history in general. These discoveries have significance for the preservation and interpretation of these heritage sites.

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are regarded as the key policy agenda for national, regional, and local government to combat climate change impacts and promote sustainable development. For example, in Perth and Peel metropolitan area, the capital city of Western Australia, there has been a shift of policy setting from that of a sprawling city to a denser city, while maintaining and promoting its ecosystem services and achieving sustainable city goals. Residential verge gardens have been widely adopted in recent years by communities and local governments in the Perth metropolitan area. This study reviews the motivations and drivers for the uptake of verge gardens in metropolitan suburbs and identifies potential policy responses. The City of Bayswater local government area was surveyed for this research. The study considers a mixed-methods approach, including site auditing and a questionnaire survey for local residents who have transformed their verges. A total of 534 verge gardens were audited on residential lots, and 166 valid questionnaire responses were received from residents. The site-audit of the verge gardens in Bayswater found that native vegetation is the dominant verge garden of choice, followed by the ornamental garden, with food production (plants/vegetables) seeming to be the least popular option. Regarding the motivations and drivers, the study has found that social (e.g., aesthetics, flowers, social interactions, and social mimicry), environmental (e.g., attracting wildlife and birds and environmental practice waterwise garden), and personal (easy maintenance) drivers are the primary motivators for residents to adopt verge gardens. Whilst the on-ground surveys were prior to COVID-19, the article includes how this topic could relate to pandemic-resilient urban spaces. As local governments look towards supporting the sustainable outcome goals, the observations of this study will be helpful for developing local government policy and community programs in the promotion and uptake of verge gardens in Australian cities.

Background and aims – Epiphytic diatoms are excellent bio-indicators of the present and past ecological condition of aquatic ecosystems. In order to reconstruct the diatom history and to evaluate its diversity in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, epiphytic diatoms were sampled from herbarium specimens of aquatic plants deposited at the National Herbarium of the Congo at Yangambi (YBI) and at the herbarium of Meise Botanic Garden (BR).Material and methods – In YBI, nine specimens belonging to the Nymphaeaceae, three to the Ceratophyllaceae, and 12 to the Lentibulariaceae collected in the Central Forest phytogeographic region were sampled for diatom investigation. In addition, nine Nymphaea lotus specimens were sampled in BR. Semi-quantitative analyses were performed by light microscopy on permanent diatom slides.Key results – Analyses of the epiphytic diatom communities on YBI and BR materials showed a large diversity of 132 species belonging to 44 genera. Taxa belonging to the genus Eunotia were relatively the most abundant in all studied samples followed by Frustulia saxonica and a Desmogonium sp. The diatom communities on Nymphaea were as varied as on Ceratophyllum, while on Utricularia, a significant lower diversity was observed. The Trophic Diatom Index (TDI) and Generic Diatom Index (GDI) showed that the water quality in the Central Forest phytogeographic region was overall good during the 20th century. They point to oligotrophic conditions for the running waters with a slight increase towards more mesotrophic conditions from the 1950s onwards. The only sample in the present study indicating mesotrophic condition was from a swamp. Conclusions – The results on the epiphytic diatoms present on herbarium material can serve as a basis for sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems in D.R. Congo. In absence of an in-depth knowledge of the species and their ecological preferences, a genus-based TDI and IDG have proven to be valuable tools for water quality monitoring in tropical Africa.

Goal. To monitor the phytosanitary state of parks and gardens plantations in the Ukrainian Forest-steppe zone and to identify species consistence of the dominant invaders. Methods. Reconnaissances, collection of materials and other attendances were carried out by using generally known ecology and entomology methods using determinants and atlases. Accounting results were subjected to variation-statistical analysis by special application program package according to the statistics and computer graphics: Microsoft Excel 2010, Statgraphics plus. Results. As a result of the phytosanitary state of the parks and gardens plantations in the forest-steppe zone were determined phytophagans species composition including 14 species of invaders among which were dominated Lepidopterans species (70.4%). Less numerous species were expanded forms of Coleoptera — 13.4%, Dipteran — 12.8% and other species which were 3.4%. The most widespread gardens and parks plantations invaders are: chestnut leaf miner (Cameraria ohridella Deschka & Dimic), fall webworm moth (Hyphantria cunea Drury.), linden moth (Phyllonorycter issikii Kumata), acacia lotus borer (Etiella zinckenella Tr.). Among the fastest spreading invaders is boxen lotus borer (Cydalima perspectalis Walker) (common box) from South-East Asia. In Ukraine this species was discovered in 2016 in Transcarpathia region. Conclusion. Over the last years destructive plant feeders such as: horse chestnut leaf miner, fall webworm moth, linden moth and others became more spreading within the parks and gardens plantations of the Ukrainian Forest-steppe zone. The significant injury by adventive species — boxen lotus bore was discovered. The lack of well-timed gardens and parks monitoring in the Ukrainian Forest-steppe zone led to mass distribution of lots of harmful species both quarantine and invasitions.

The Islamic garden is a garden inspired by the garden of paradise which is often mentioned in the Qur'an and the Hadith of the Prophet. Jannah et al. (2015) conducted a study on Islamic gardens with the method of approaching the value of the content of the Qur'an and hadith, which examined the elements and characteristics of the park as well as sharia boundaries that must be considered in an Islamic garden. This study aims to continue the research which is applied to the mosque garden landscape through the evaluation stage, so that the final result can be recommended in the form of a design based on the concept of an Islamic garden. The research object chosen is the Landscape of the Jamik Sumenep Mosque. This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method and literature study, which consisted of the following stages: 1) Evaluation of the mosque garden landscape based on Islamic concepts, 2) User perception analysis, and 3) Preparation of recommendations for the mosque garden landscape design concept. The process of collecting qualitative descriptive data is done by direct observation in the field, interviews with related parties, distributing questionnaires and documentation. While the literature study was taken from the main literature in Islam, namely the Qur'an and hadith, along with other scientific literature related to the Islamic garden. Based on the results of the evaluation and perceptions of respondents, in general the garden landscape of the Jamik Sumenep Mosque is in accordance with the criteria for garden inspiration based on Islamic concepts, there are no garden elements and characteristics that are contrary to sharia. The resulting design recommendations are in the form of a site plan, adding plant species to the garden, adding a sinage, a fountain element, arranging parking lots, structuring circulation paths and adding trash cans. Respondents' perception stated that the garden landscape of the Jamik Sumenep mosque played a very important role in supporting the function of the mosque as a center of worship. Community gardens have emerged in Paris as a way to create green spacesin the city’s densely populated working-class neighbourhoods. One such garden is the Goutte Verte,a temporary, nomadic community garden that, with the agreement of the city and its developers, occupiesvacant lots awaiting the construction of new-build social housing. The continued existence of the GoutteVerte is placed in opposition to much-needed housing in the city, with poor, unemployed, and middle-classgardeners alike caught between a desire for green space and a demand for comfortable housing. Drawingon participant observation and interviews conducted in 2013–14 and 2019, I demonstrate how communitygardens act as a material alternative to urban planning and governance that often fail to account for a rightto a “place to breathe” in the city – a situation that is increasingly fraught as city planners treat newconstruction as the primary solution for affordable housing in Paris.

In the countries of the Mediterranean Basin viticulture has been dealt with for centuries. It was known to the ancient civilizations of the Middle East and grapevines were widely planted in Greece and Rome. The vineyard was part of the utility garden, usually occupying large areas and at the same time being a connection with the landscape. Creeper vine was also used in decorative gardens as an ornamental plant for various types of buildings and garden structures. The Polish tradition of planting vineyards dates back to the Middle Ages and is mainly associated with the activities of monks, although it was not as common as in the countries of southern Europe. However, in Polish gardening literature and in the literature that describes the development of the art of gardening, you can find lots of tips on how to grow grapevines, their varieties and the descriptions of the vineyards.

The purpose of the presented work is a scientifically based selection of the most promising representatives of the genera Paeonia L. and Hosta Tratt. for their inclusion in the composition of flower arrangements on urban public facilities. Representatives of the genera Paeonia and Hosta from the collection fund of the Laboratory of Ornamental Plants of the Main Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences were used as model objects. The genus Paeonia is represented by a sample of 19 cultivars with a Japanese flower shape, the genus Hosta is represented by a sample of 23 names. Comparative analysis of representatives of the genera Paeonia and Hosta and statistical processing of experimental data were carried out using standard techniques. The following standards were used: for representatives of the genus Paeonia – cultivars ‘Philomele’ and ‘Cora Stubbs’, for representatives of the genus Hosta – cultivar ‘Liberty’. The development of models of flower beds is carried out on the basis of generally accepted methods and techniques. The representatives of Paeonia and Hosta have the results of studies of their representatives on the signs that, in our opinion, are significant when using these plants on objects of urban landscape architecture. Representatives of Paeonia have five cultivars according to the complex of signs of the generative and vegetative sphere – ‘Philomele’, ‘Mrs. Wilder Bancroft’, ‘Cora Stubbs’, ‘Gay Paree’, ‘Lotus Queen’ and ‘Syurpriz’ – with priority for two cultivars ‘Cora Stubbs’ and ‘Philomele’, the most promising for use in urban landscaping. In the representatives of the genus Hosta, according to the totality of the four studied quantitative characteristics that do not have reliable statistical differences with the standard, were not revealed. But, based only on the results of the evaluation of the parameters of the leaf blade, three Hosta culrivars can be recommended for use as part of landscape compositions at urban public facilities: ‘Liberty’, ‘Frances Williams’ and ‘August Beauty’. Using representatives of the genera Paeonia and Hosta, selected based on the results of a comparative analysis of their quantitative characteristics, four compositions were designed.

Fraxinus americana L. (white ash), a native North American tree commonly cultivated for its ornamental qualities, displayed symptoms of leaf spot disease in a sentinel garden located in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China, in 2022. This disease led to premature leaf shedding, adversely affecting the plant’s growth and substantially diminishing its ornamental value. Potential fungal pathogens were isolated from the diseased leaves and the subsequent application of Koch’s postulates confirmed the pathogenicity of the fungal isolates (BL-1, BL-2). Through a combination of multi-locus phylogenetic analysis, including ITS, ACT, ApMat, CAL, CHS-1, GAPDH, and TUB2, alongside morphological assessments, the fungus was conclusively identified as Colletotrichum jiangxiense. This represents the first record of C. jiangxiense affecting white ash, highlighting the important role of sentinel gardens in uncovering novel pathogen–plant host interactions.

The South China Botanical Garden (SCBG), one of the largest and oldest botanical gardens in China, conserves important plant germplasms of endangered species. Therefore, ensuring tree health and studying the associated mycobiome of the phyllosphere is essential to maintaining its visual aesthetics. During a survey of plant-associated microfungal species in SCBG, we collected several coelomycetous taxa. Phylogenetic relationships were evaluated based on the analyses of ITS, LSU, RPB2, and β-tubulin loci. The morphological features of the new collections were compared with those of existing species, emphasizing close phylogenetic affinities. Based on the morphological comparisons and multi-locus phylogeny, we introduce three new species. These are Ectophoma phoenicis sp. nov., Remotididymella fici-microcarpae sp. nov., and Stagonosporopsis pedicularis-striatae sp. nov. The basic question guiding this article is what do people living in an underserved neighborhood in St. Louis, Missouri, think about the urban gardens that have sprouted up around them during the last ten years. The question arose because of the mixed success of a produce market that was meant to target the nutritional needs of this African American community. Based on interviews conducted at two garden sites created by the nonprofit HopeBUILD, the author found that the community members valued the gardens less for the nutrition they offered than for the values and sense of heritage they conveyed. The ways they spoke about the gardens and produce resonated with old agrarian myths about the cultural importance of working the land to build a strong sense of character and independence. Many have relatives who took part in the Great Migration from the rural South in the early twentieth century. Although African Americans suffered devastating hardships from corrupt and racist tenant and farm policies, many held fast to the agrarian myth that to own a farm, or produce one’s own food, enabled self-determination and full rights of citizenship. These inner-city African Americans, therefore, stake claim to one of the longest-lasting and most potent symbols of American national identity—the American farmer. The symbol of the farmer is as relevant in urban lots as it is in the countryside. The point is that healthy food and nutritious food are not necessarily the same thing. Healthy foods are ones that sustain cultures, not just bodies.

The article investigates the the story about the planting and destruction of the heavenly garden found in the Slavonic version of 3 Baruch. The study shows a number of intriguing parallels between the theme of the garden in 3 Baruch and similar traditions found in the Enochic Book of Giants. In both accounts, the garden is depicted as the place of the primordial heavenly rebellion involving angelic beings. The study argues that the author of 3 Baruch is involved in anti-Enochic polemics, borrowing and rewriting Enochic motifs and themes from the Adamic perspective. The story of the planting and the destruction of the garden in 3 Baruch seems to represent the locus of intense debates involving substantial rewriting of the «original» Enochic motifs and themes.

The term ‘planetary garden’ was coined by Gilles Clement to refer to the privileged site of the planetary mixing of species that is managed by humans. In the face of the ongoing environmental collapse, we envision the garden as a new locus for symbiotic attachment and original exchange between human and non-human ecologies. Drawing on the garden metaphor, we discuss the conceptual and ecological impacts of human stewardship of the environment. Recognising ecosystems as changing fields of social and technical interactions, we evaluate how conservation strategies shift in tandem with these changes. We explore the influence of emerging technologies on human understanding of natural ecosystems and on societal approaches to conservation. Envisioning the future, we are mapping out the need for human-centric technologies to foster new forms of agency between humans and their environments. While any technological promise does not come without ethical and technical challenges, we advocate for ecological intelligence (EI), a spatialised human-AI collaboration scheme, as a critical condition for reimagining and upscaling conservation practices in the Anthropocene.

AbstractEstablishment potential is one of the primary components of invasive species risk assessment. Models that predict establishment of potentially invasive ornamental crops often ignore differences among cultivars and the variability in plant response to site-specific factors. The objective of this study was to determine the extent to which differences among cultivars and habitat characteristics affect establishment of 5 cultivars of ornamental cleome. Experiments were conducted to compare germination, survival, and growth of cultivars in cultivated (gardens) and noncultivated (roadsides and prairies) environments and, in prairies, the effects of competition (low, intermediate, and high). In the first experiment, germination, survival, and growth were recorded in gardens, prairies, and roadsides in four locations in Minnesota. In the second experiment, the effects of competition with resident species were studied in five seed lots from three cultivars in three prairie sites. Additionally, a quantitative description of germination and transplantable seedling quality, when grown under greenhouse production standards, was obtained and compared with results from the cultivated and noncultivated outdoor environments. Germination in greenhouse conditions was significantly greater (78%) than in garden, prairies, or roadsides (< 46%). Mortality was greater in noncultivated than in cultivated environments (3% wk−1 and 1.4% wk−1, respectively). Survival was affected by competition, which reduced population establishment. Cultivar differences were most pronounced at seedling emergence, whereas habitat characteristics were more influential at later stages of the life cycle. Germination and plant height were similar among noncultivated environments. Variability in seedling emergence, survival, and growth in response to cultivar, habitat, and competition are important determinants of establishment potential. Among the cultivars studied, the native cleome, roughseed clammyweed, has a greater establishment potential than the nonnative cleome, spiderflower.

Abstract The nursery industry depends on public gardens to supply propagation material for newly introduced plant species grown from seed. Most seed obtained by public gardens is received in small quantities and must be handled efficiently to assure at least minimal germination. A seed germination protocol is proposed which leads the propagator through a series of steps including a systematic search of the literature, a comparison of species about which little or nothing is known to related species with known propagation methods, a study of the climatic conditions present in the seeds' native area, a study of ecological factors that may affect germination, and finally to the propagation process itself. Examples are provided which illustrate how the protocol is used.

Abstract A commercially available small garden seeder was modified to improve the precision planting of uncoated lettuce seed. The modified seeder is light weight, is adapted to planting small quantity seed lots, can be rapidly cleaned of remnant seed, and is designed for research and home garden use. Acceptable single seeding of uncoated lettuce seeds in the laboratory averaged 41.5%. Acceptable single seedling emergence in the field averaged 36.8%, a 13.6% improvement in the existing efficiency over the small plot seeder currently used. Minor modifications could make this planter design adaptable to most small-seeded crops.

Much has been written in recent years about 19th-century rural cemeteries. Beginning with the establishment of Boston's Mount Auburn Cemetery in 1831, these rural retreats rapidly replaced existing church burial grounds and by the 1850s had led to the development of urban parks and garden suburbs as well. Like urban parks and garden suburbs, rural cemeteries were meant to provide relief from the crowding, grid-iron regularity, and grittiness of the country's rapidly expanding industrial centers by embracing the openness, spontaneity, and verdant freshness of nature. Trees, shrubs, and flowering plants punctuated and enhanced the gentle contours of the land; lakes and roadways reflected and extended nature's beauties; manmade structures, too, nestled into the undulating rhythms of the land, exhibiting a oneness with the varied and carefully orchestrated richness of the natural setting. The garden suburb and the rural cemetery shared a further distinction of being located on the periphery of existing cities and were frequently entered through imposing gates that effectively announced their separateness from the surrounding terrain. Even more fundamental, however, but not fully understood, is the fact that at the core of the creation of both the rural cemetery and the garden suburb was a desire to emphasize and consolidate the American family by providing it with a new physical setting and a new set of symbols. By the Civil War, virtually every large American city had a rural cemetery, where its dead were buried in ample family lots that were adorned with imposing family monuments, and set off from other family lots by elaborate iron fences or stone copings similar to those that edged the family home.
