The popularity of video games is at an all-time high among today’s population. Game designers and producers spend years on plot and character development, the creation of appropriate settings, and providing the player with a ludic experience that is both enriching and perplexing. This article looks at the creation of virtual utopian societies as the basis for contemporary video games. Just as the world today sees many conflicts over island rights, island sovereignties, and, sometimes, the creation of artificial islands that seek to escape governance of existing countries, video games have embraced the creation of a separate society for settings that explore new or extreme forms of individual, societal, and political development. Examining the BioShock series, this article looks at how video games and their designers have used utopic theories of society to create new experiences, potentialities, and ethical dilemmas for the players.

This design case focuses on the evolution of the design of the mechanics and core systems in the first two tabletop games in the series, informed by over three and a half years’ worth of design notes, playable prototypes, outside design consultations, internal design reviews, playtests, and interviews.

Lost and Found is a unit that handles problems with passenger luggage, including loss, damage, and finding of goods with various strategies that will be carried out by lost and found unit officers to gain the trust of passengers who have chosen transportation, so that if luggage damage occurs, the lost and found unit will take care of it. Standard Operating Procedures are a series of instructions used to solve a problem. Therefore, standard operating procedures are very useful for the work of lost and found unit officers to avoid mistakes, delays, obstructions in the process of carrying out their work. This study aims to determine whether there is influence and how much influence standard operating procedures have on the service of lost and found unit officers to Garuda Indonesia airline passengers at Supadio Pontianak International Airport. The research method used in this study is a sequential mixed method with a sequential explonatory type. Data collection techniques in this study used questionnaires, interviews, observation, documentation and research sites at the Lost and Found unit of PT. Gapura Angkasa on the Garuda Indonesia airline at Supadio Pontianak International Airport. The results of the t test show that the independent variable (X) has a significant effect on the dependent variable (Y) with a significant value of 0.000 ≤ α 0.05, and the results of the coefficient of determination test (R2) show that the magnitude of the effect of the independent variable (X) on the dependent (Y) with the magnitude of the effect reaching 70.4% indicates that standard operating procedures are an important role for lost and found unit officers in serving passengers and 29.6% are influenced by other variables outside of this study.

This study examined gender differences in psychological functioning in a sample of college students who lost a parent to death. Male and female students ( n = 65) who had a parent that had died were asked to complete a series of self report questionnaires to assess psychological distress, feelings of grief and bereavement, and coping strategies. Overall, no gender differences were found between bereaved students on measures of psychological distress. However an avoidant coping style was related to symptoms of depression in females, but not in males. Students who lost a mother were more likely to report symptoms of depression, hopelessness, and suicidal ideation as compared to students who lost a father. Future research implications and the clinical importance of these findings are discussed.

SUMMARY Pit and fissure sealant is a clinical technique adopted to prevent caries lesion development. Ionomeric and/or resin-based materials are commonly used for this purpose. This article presents a case series of sealed teeth with 22-year follow-up evaluated by clinical, photographic, and microscopic analysis. In 1992, sixteen patients (9-14 years of age) had at least three teeth sealed with one of the following materials: resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC, Vitrebond or Fuji II LC) or polyacid-modified resin composite (PMRC, VariGlass VLC), totaling 86 sealed permanent teeth. After 22 years, 10 patients were recalled, representing 41 teeth. The retention of sealants was assessed by three methods: clinical analysis by visual inspection; photography; and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and classified as retained (pits and fissures filled by sealant material); partially retained (pits and fissures partially filled by sealant material); or totally lost (no material was found in pits and fissures). The SEM images provided a higher number of retained sealants when compared with the clinical and photographic evaluations. Also, no totally lost scores were found with SEM analysis, regardless of the sealing material. No caries lesions were found. A fully or partially retained sealant in pits and fissures was capable of preventing caries lesions after 22 years within the patient pool analyzed.

Abstract Sigalit Landau is an internationally recognised artist born in Jerusalem whose works have been exhibited in major museums worldwide. This article seeks to analyse the sculpture Father and Tufik (2014), in which the artist relates for the first time to the story of her father, a Holocaust survivor from Transnistria. Starting with the creative process that led to the sculpture and examining unpublished sketches, the study shows how the work involves a multigenerational tale and a desire for communication and transmission which is further developed in a series of large-sized sculptures. Furthermore, elements of play, which Ernst van Alphen identifies as a means used by younger generations of artists to confront Holocaust remembrance, can be found in this sculpture and in other key works including Barbed Hula (2000) and One Man's Floor Is Another Man's Feelings (2011) which can thus be interpreted in the context of the Shoah.

Search and rescue personnel and volunteers spend thousands of hours attempting to rescue and ultimately save the lives of lost people. One of the most effective ways to increase the speed of locating a lost person is by predicting the highest probable areas they may be located in and determining search areas around them. This study examined the demographics and behaviour of people lost in the Australian wilderness from the perspective of search and rescue authorities and lost people themselves in order to assess similarities between types of lost people. The aggregated behaviour characteristics can then be used to improve search and rescue outcomes by predicting lost person behaviour specific to the Australian wilderness. This study found that different demographic groupings can be expected to behave differently when lost in the wilderness. By using the probable characteristics and behaviours of a lost person, search areas can be better targeted, assisting in locating a lost person faster and improving the outcomes of the search. The results from this study provide insights into behavioural trends and characteristics that can assist in the planning of search areas for search and rescue incidents in the Australian wilderness.

The POUNDS Lost trial is a 2-year clinical trial testing the effects of dietary interventions on weight loss. This study included 811 adults with overweight or obesity who were randomized to one of four diets that contained either 15% or 25% protein and 20% or 40% fat in a 2 × 2 factorial design. By 2 years, participants on average lost from 2.9 to 3.6 kg in body weight in the four intervention arms, while no significant difference was observed across the intervention arms. In POUNDS Lost, we performed a series of ancillary studies to detect intrinsic factors particular to genomic, epigenomic, and metabolomic markers that may modulate changes in weight and other cardiometabolic traits in response to the weight-loss dietary interventions. Genomic variants identified from genome-wide association studies (GWASs) on obesity, type 2 diabetes, glucose and lipid metabolisms, gut microbiome, and dietary intakes have been found to interact with dietary macronutrients (fat, protein, and carbohydrates) in relation to weight loss and changes of body composition and cardiometabolic traits. In addition, we recently investigated epigenomic modifications, particularly blood DNA methylation and circulating microRNAs (miRNAs). We reported DNA methylation levels at NFATC2IP, CPT1A, TXNIP, and LINC00319 were related to weight loss or changes of glucose, lipids, and blood pressure; we also reported thrifty miRNA expression as a significant epigenomic marker related to changes in insulin sensitivity and adiposity. Our studies have also highlighted the importance of temporal changes in novel metabolomic signatures for gut microbiota, bile acids, and amino acids as predictors for achievement of successful weight loss outcomes. Moreover, our studies indicate that biochemical, behavioral, and psychosocial factors such as physical activity, sleep disturbance, and appetite may also modulate metabolic changes during dietary interventions. This review summarized our major findings in the POUNDS Lost trial, which provided preliminary evidence supporting the development of precision diet interventions for obesity management.

Presenting and describing a temporal series of air pollution data with longer time lengths provides more concise information and is, in fact, one of the simplest techniques of data reduction in a time series. However, this process can result in the loss of important information related to data features. Thus, the purpose of this study is to determine the type of data characteristics that might be lost when describing data with different time lengths corresponding to a process of data reduction. In parallel, this study proposes the application of a multifractal technique to investigate the properties on an air pollution series with different time lengths. A case study has been carried out using an air pollution index data in Klang, Malaysia. Results show that hourly air pollution series contain the most informative knowledge regarding the behaviors and characteristics of air pollution, particularly in terms of the strength of multifractality, long-term persistent correlations, and heterogeneity of variations. On the other hand, the statistical findings found that data reduction corresponding to a longer time length will change the multifractal properties of the original data.

The treatment of deafferentation pain is a primary goal of a referral center for peripheral nerve surgery. DREZ is an important asset in the neurosurgeon’s armamentarium. The surgical technique and long-term results are analyzed in two series, with or without intraoperative monitoring (IOM). DREZotomy is highly effective in lumbar root avulsive injuries but is ineffective in resolving pain due to spinal cord injuries. Cervical DREZotomy for cancer pain is not superior to intrathecal morphine. In brachial plexus avulsive injuries, the largest series shows a 74% success rate, but the efficacy of the procedure is lost over time. AbstractIt is pointed out that the generalized Lambert series $\sum\nolimits_{n = 1}^\infty {[(n^{N-2h})/(e^{n^Nx}-1)]} $ studied by Kanemitsu, Tanigawa and Yoshimoto can be found on page 332 of Ramanujan's Lost Notebook in a slightly more general form. We extend an important transformation of this series obtained by Kanemitsu, Tanigawa and Yoshimoto by removing restrictions on the parameters N and h that they impose. From our extension we deduce a beautiful new generalization of Ramanujan's famous formula for odd zeta values which, for N odd and m > 0, gives a relation between ζ(2m + 1) and ζ(2Nm + 1). A result complementary to the aforementioned generalization is obtained for any even N and m ∈ ℤ. It generalizes a transformation of Wigert and can be regarded as a formula for ζ(2m + 1 − 1/N). Applications of these transformations include a generalization of the transformation for the logarithm of Dedekind eta-function η(z), Zudilin- and Rivoal-type results on transcendence of certain values, and a transcendence criterion for Euler's constant γ.

During the 1970s and early 1980s most studies on corporatism indicated that corporatist policies led to lower unemployment and inflation and higher economic growth rates. In the mid- and late 1980s, however, voices claiming that corporatism is in “decline” became more and more frequent although hardly any empirical examinations were undertaken. The purpose of this study is to estimate empirically the influence of corporatist arrangements on macroeconomic performance and industrial disputes in the 1980s as compared with the 1970s and 1960s. This pooled time-series/cross-sectional analysis provides evidence that corporatist policies have not lost their capacity to achieve the desired macroeconomic goals in the 1980s; in addition, corporatism significantly reduces the number of working days lost. However, no evidence was found that corporatism leads to increased economic growth. There is evidence that economic growth is adversely affected by government outlays.

The current study aims at exploring the grammaticalization of the nouns ʃikil 'shape' and omir 'age' in Jordanian Arabic. The data were collected from Jordanian T.V. series and interviews with native speakers of Jordanian Arabic. The sample of the study consisted of 300 tokens of ʃikil and 200 tokens of omir. The researcher collected the data, then he analysed the functions of these two words. The study found out that ʃikil was used 100 times as a noun meaning 'shape', and 200 times as an evidential particle. Besides, omir was also used as a noun 60 times and 140 times as a negative polarity item. The findings of the study showed that ʃikil has one lexical meaning 'shape', and it evolved by the process of grammaticalization into an evidential particle. ʃikil underwent the process of semantic bleaching, since it lost its content meaning and developed to serve a grammatical function of evidentially. Bedsides, it was decategorized as it lost the grammatical features of nouns, i.e. it cannot be pluralized and cannot accept definite articles. Also ʃikil lost its stress as part of phonetic reduction. Similarly, omir has one lexical meaning 'age' and developed into a negative polarity item. Omir was affected by the process of semantic bleaching and decategorization as it was developed from its original meaning as a noun meaning 'age' into a negative polarity item. Additionally, omir underwent the process of phonetic reduction as it lost stress. The study found out that ʃikil and omir underwent three stages of grammaticalization: semantic bleaching, decategorization, and phonetic reduction.

It focuses on three aspects of these objects: the technical details of the carving and choice of model (style), the structural specifications (manufacture), and the subject matter (iconography and theme). It endeavors to place these objects in the context of other shield portraits found more recently at Aphrodisias and to evaluate them in light of recent scholarship on late antique sculpture. It stresses the similarities between these shield portraits and others from the site and reflects on possible contexts for the Aphrodisian shield portraits, considering for the first time the possibility that all of these Aphrodisian shield portraits might have come from the same context.

A communication circuit for transmitting and receiving signal through a series connection of photo-voltaic (PV) panels is proposed. It consists of a transformer connected in series with each panel to couple current signal in and out of the DC power line. This allows data transmission through the panels without using any additional wires or radio frequency link. A practical case of eight 40 W amorphous PV panels is used to demonstrate the design process. It is found that the optimum carrier frequency is 250 kHz at which the panel output impedance is around 5 Ohms, allowing the current signal to pass through with low energy lost. Coupling circuit consists of inductors and capacitors designed to give highest transmission at the carrier frequency. Simulation to verify the circuit performance using a non-ideal model of a toroidal transformer is carried out to prove the feasibility of the concept.

It is important to have good estimates of tag reporting rates when inferring exploitation rates and other mortality rates from tagging experiments. We estimate the reporting rates of single- and double-tagged Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) caught in commercial fisheries around coastal Newfoundland, Canada, based on an extensive series of multi-reward tagging experiments conducted during 1997–2004. Reporting rates for single-tagged cod varied from 58% to almost 100%, with significant temporal and spatial variability. The odds of reporting a double-tagged cod was almost double that of a single-tagged cod. Returns from double-tagged cod allow us to estimate tag shedding rates. Tag shedding rates suggested that 22% of fish lost their tag during their first year at liberty; subsequently, tag shedding rates were much lower (<10%). We also found that twice as many fish lost tags when the tags were attached anteriorly at the base of the first dorsal fin compared with a position more towards the posterior end.

In this retrospective study, we report a series of 80 Arpe prostheses for trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis in 63 patients. Twenty-seven prostheses (20 patients) were lost to follow-up. Twenty-one were revised, eight of them during the first year after operation. The calculated cumulated implant survival rate was 85% at 10 years but could be lower due to the lack of information on the patients lost to follow-up. The number of complications due to technical errors was high; but after we had done 30 cases, the number of early revisions decreased markedly. At follow-up, 23 of 32 thumbs were totally free of pain, and the patients were satisfied with 31 thumbs. We conclude that the implant survival declines progressively in the long run, with a survival rate of 80% after 15 years of follow-up and a further decline thereafter. We also found that this surgery was difficult to master. We advise selecting this implant for thumb trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis with caution. Level of evidence: IV

ObjectivesOur aim was to measure ambulance sickness absence rates over time, comparing ambulance services and investigate the predictability of rates for future forecasting.SettingAll English ambulance services, UK.DesignWe used a time series design analysing published monthly National Health Service staff sickness rates by gender, age, job role and region, comparing the 10 regional ambulance services in England between 2009 and 2018. Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and Seasonal ARIMA (SARIMA) models were developed using Stata V.14.2 and trends displayed graphically.ParticipantsIndividual participant data were not available. The total number of full-time equivalent (FTE) days lost due to sickness absence (including non-working days) and total number of days available for work for each staff group and level were available. In line with The Data Protection Act, if the organisation had less than 330 FTE days available during the study period it was censored for analysis.ResultsA total of 1117 months of sickness absence rate data for all English ambulance services were included in the analysis. We found considerable variation in annual sickness absence rates between ambulance services and over the 10-year duration of the study in England. Across all the ambulance services the median days available were 1 336 888 with IQR of 548 796 and 73 346 median days lost due to sickness absence, with IQR of 30 551 days. Among clinical staff sickness absence varied seasonally with peaks in winter and falls over summer. The winter increases in sickness absence were largely predictable using seasonally adjusted (SARIMA) time series models.ConclusionSickness rates for clinical staff were found to vary considerably over time and by ambulance trust. Statistical models had sufficient predictive capability to help forecast sickness absence, enabling services to plan human resources more effectively at times of increased demand.

Introduction: Stemmed total knee arthroplasty (STKA) periprosthetic fractures (PPFs) are an emerging problem affecting frail patients. Their surgical fixation is challenging, due to intramedullary involvement and poor bone stock. Polyaxial locking plating has yielded good results in implant-related femur fractures. We hypothesized that this treatment would provide similar results for STKA PPFs. Methods: Retrospective analysis of consecutive patients with a femoral PPF or inter-implant fracture around a knee revision stem who had undergone open reduction and periprosthetic-specific polyaxial plate fixation. Results: We found 14 cases of mean age 85.4 years. Cerclages were used in 80% of cases. Fixation of a mean 8.6 cortices around the revision stem was achieved, with an overall screw density of 1:2 or 1:3. Four patients lost their ability to walk, while four experienced postoperative local complications. Bone healing was achieved in all except one who died during hospitalization. The 13 remaining survived the first year of follow-up. Conclusion: STKA PPFs are an emerging and challenging problem affecting frail patients. Treatment using polyaxial locking plates provides stable fixation allowing early mobilization despite high complication rates.

The problem of the order of law in general, and of coercion in particular, we believe is relatively well developed in general legal theory. More comprehensive and complex studies can be found in the branch sciences. In addition to this, the concept of coercion and a series of problems related to this subject are the subject of multiple discussions, in the process of which a series of insufficiently examined problems were detected both in the general theory of law and in the branch sciences. Despite these drawbacks, jurists, philosophers and sociologists all over the world have over the years been concerned with researching various aspects of the phenomenon of coercion. Valuable works have been consecrated, which have not lost their value as sources of information to this day. But some issues were examined in these works, taking into account the political-ideological representations that dominated those times, which led to vague interpretations of the facts, sometimes even distorting their understanding.

This research aims to analyze the translation techniques used and assess the translation quality in the form of accuracy and acceptability assessment on respond-to-request speech acts of The Lost Hero and The Son of Neptune novel series written by Rick Riordan. This research used a qualitative-descriptive method whose data sources were the novel series and two raters who had aptitudes in assessing translation quality. The methods to collect and analyze the data were content analysis and Focus Group Discussion. The study found 11 translation techniques applied in translating the respond-to-request speech acts. They were establish equivalent, variation, borrowing, modulation, amplification, adaptation, discursive creation, transposition, reduction, literal translation, and substitution. Dealing with the quality, the findings showed that most translations were accurate and acceptable. The majority of accurate translations used established equivalent technique. The less accurate translations applied modulation, amplification addition, discursive creation, literal translation and reduction whereas the inaccurate ones applied literal translation technique. Meanwhile, the majority of acceptable translations used establish equivalent and he less acceptable translations applied modulation, amplification addition, and discursive creation. Thus, this research proposes that the use of appropriate translation techniques is very important for the results of quality translation that is easily understood by the reader.

Background: To study clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of reversible splenial lesion syndrome (RESLES) in adult patients. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed using clinical, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), laboratory results, and neuroimaging data obtained from 6 adult RESLES patients. Results: All 6 patients (3 male cases, 3 female cases) were determined to be acute or subacute onset, most of them associated with infection or fever. All initial MRI data exhibited splenium of corpus callosum lesions with hypointensity on T1WI, hyperintensity on T2WI, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and Flair, without significant gadolinium enhancement. Five patients were treated with glucocorticoids and showed significant improvement in 1–15 days, with the lesion having disappeared or weakened, and one case was lost of follow-up. The cell number and protein amount in CSF were determined to be at normal levels, or slightly increased in 3 patients with thyroid dysfunction. Conclusion: The etiology of adult RESLES was observed to be complex and diverse, primarily related to infection, fever, and thyroid dysfunction. DWI was found to be more sensitive in these lesions, and CSF cytology was observed to be either normal or mildly abnormal. A majority of patients were found to be sensitive to glucocorticoid, and have a good prognosis with lesions that disappeared rapidly.

AbstractGlacier surface mass balance evaluated over the actual glacier geometry depends not only on climatic variations, but also on the dynamic adjustment of glacier geometry. Therefore, it has been proposed that reference-surface balances calculated over a constant glacier hypsometry are better suited for climatic interpretation. Here we present a comparison of 82 year modelled time series (1926-2008) of conventional and reference-surface balance for 36 Swiss glaciers. Over this time period the investigated glaciers have lost 22% of their area, and ice surface elevation close to the current glacier terminus has decreased by 78 m on average. Conventional balance in the last decade, at −0.91 mw.e.a-1, is 0.14 m w.e. a-1 less negative than the reference-surface balance. About half of the negative (stabilizing) feedback on mass balance due to glacier terminus retreat is compensated by more negative mass balances due to surface lowering. Short-term climatic variability is clearly reflected in the conventional mass-balance series; however, the magnitude of the long-term negative trend is underestimated compared to that found in the reference-surface balance series. Both conventional and reference-surface specific balances show large spatial variability among the 36 glaciers.

This article presents the results of a study into the effectiveness of therapeutic assessment (TA), a brief form of intervention that incorporates the results of assessment findings into psychological treatment. The history of Anthony, a man who reported symptoms of persistent complex bereavement disorder (PCBD), associated with major depression disorder (MDD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), is presented. After his parents’ deaths, Anthony became detached from reality, lost all pleasure in his everyday life, and found it impossible to overcome the devastating feelings related to the loss. Following TA principles, the assessor created a supportive and empathic relationship with Anthony and helped him attain his goals for the assessment. The assessment was monitored using a single-case quasi-experimental design with time-series analysis. Results of this study revealed a specific trajectory of Anthony’s self-reported symptoms and a statistically significant trend toward improvement in severity at the end of the TA. This case study highlights the utility and efficacy of TA in helping clients process traumatic losses and complicated bereavements.

Here the potential impact of chamber walls on the loss of gaseous organic species and SOA formation has been explored using the Generator for Explicit Chemistry and Kinetics of the Organics in the Atmosphere (GECKO-A) modeling tool which explicitly represents SOA formation and gas/wall partitioning. The model was compared with 41 smog chamber experiments of SOA formation under OH oxidation of alkane and alkene series (linear, cyclic and C12-branched alkanes and terminal, internal and 2-methyl alkenes with 7 to 17 carbon atoms) under high NOx conditions. Simulated trends match observed trends within and between homologous series. The loss of organic vapors to the chamber walls is found to affect SOA yields as well as the composition of the gas and the particle phases. Simulated distributions of the species in various phases suggest that nitrates, hydroxynitrates and carbonylesters could substantially be lost onto walls. The extent of this process depends on the rate of gas/wall mass transfer, the vapor pressure of the species and the duration of the experiments. This work suggests that SOA yields inferred from chamber experiments could be underestimated up to 0.35 yield unit due to the loss of organic vapors to chamber walls.

Abstract A series of two-dimensional numerical simulations examine the breaking of first-mode internal waves at isolated ridges, independently varying the relative height of the topography compared to the depth of the ocean h0/H0; the relative steepness of the topographic slope compared to the slope of the internal wave group velocity γ; and the Froude number of the incoming internal wave Fr0. The fraction of the incoming wave energy, which is reflected back toward deep water, transmitted beyond the ridge, and lost to dissipation and mixing, is diagnosed from the simulations. For critical slopes, with γ = 1, the fraction of incoming energy lost at the slope scales approximately like h0/H0, independent of the incoming wave Froude number. For subcritical slopes, with γ < 1, waves break and lose a substantial proportion of their energy if the maximum Froude number, estimated as Frmax = Fr0/(1 − h0/H0)2, exceeds a critical value, found empirically to be about 0.3. The dissipation at subcritical slopes therefore increases as both incoming wave Froude number and topographic height increase. At critical slopes, the dissipation is enhanced along the slope facing the incoming wave. In contrast, at subcritical slopes, dissipation is small until the wave amplitude is sufficiently enhanced by the shoaling topography to exceed the critical Froude number; then large dissipation extends all the way to the surface. The results are shown to generalize to variable stratification and different topographies, including axisymmetric seamounts. The regimes for low-mode internal wave breaking at isolated critical and subcritical topography identified by these simulations provide guidance for the parameterization of the mixing due to radiated internal tides.

Calorie restriction, followed by ad libitum refeeding, results, respectively, in loss and regeneration of pulmonary alveoli. We now show 35% of alveoli are lost within 72 h of onset of calorie restriction (⅔ decreased daily chow intake), and an additional 12% of alveoli are lost over a subsequent 12 days of calorie restriction. Tissue necrosis was not seen. Within 72 h of refeeding, after 15 days of calorie restriction, the number of alveoli returns to precalorie restriction values. Microarray lung gene profiling, in conjunction with Western and RNase protection assay, demonstrate an increase of granzyme and caspase gene expression 2–3 h after onset of calorie restriction. By 12 h, granzyme and caspase expression is no longer increased, but tumor necrosis factor death receptor expression is elevated. At 336 h, Fas death receptor expression is increased. Because granzymes are found only in cytotoxic lymphocytes (CTLs) and natural killer (NK) cells, we suggest calorie restriction activates these cells, initiating a series of molecular events that results in alveolar destruction. The evidence of involvement of CTLs and NK cells and the absence of necrosis are similar to alveolar destruction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Abstract Background Complex musculoskeletal infections(MSKI) can be seen in injection drug users. The objective of the study was to describe the anatomic location and microbial etiology of MSKI. Methods This is a single center, eleven-year case series of adult patients admitted with infection of the musculoskeletal system from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2018. Diagnosis codes for MSKI were used. As there are no diagnosis codes that specifically identify injection drug use, ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes for related diagnoses were used. The codes included opioid use disorder, drug abuse, heroin use, drug overdose, cocaine use, and methamphetamine use.Charts were then carefully reviewed to determine if a MSKI related to IDU had occurred. Fisher’s exact test was used to calculate P values. Results A total of 849 individual medical records were identified. Eighty-six distinct episodes of infection were found in eighty-two patients. Most patients were white, non-Hispanic, male, 50 years of age or younger. Tobacco use disorder(87.8%) and hepatitis C(64.6%) were common. Mental health disorders were identified in one third. The axial skeleton was involved in 61.6% and the appendicular in 25.6%. Soft tissue infection alone was present in 9%. Bacterial infections predominated with Staphylococcus aureus most frequent(67.4%) followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (11.6%). Candida species were uncommon. All soft tissue infections were polymicrobial. Infections of the appendicular skeleton were managed with antibiotics and surgery whereas infections of the axial skeleton were more likely to receive antibiotics alone. Seventy two percent had successfully completed treatment at one year. The remainder had relapsed due to same infection, died or were lost to follow up. Based on economic mechanics and Chinese time series data from 1978 to 2018, this paper has measured and analyzed production forces, transaction capacity and consumption power to determine how they impact the growth of national wealth in China. We found that all three significantly influence the national fiscal revenue. The drivers of economic growth include developing manufacturing processes; improving production forces; increasing finance and investment to improve infrastructure, logistics and telecommunication; improving human capital and social institutions to enhance transaction capacity; and boosting the consumption power through a range of efforts to elevate the production force, although consumption power lost its statistical significance in this paper. These factors all impact the fiscal revenue growth and lead to economic rise in China.

The folk poetry of Somogy County have been known by the public from the end of the 18th century. After the initial sporadic publications the methodical collecting work of the folk-songs and children’s games started at the end of the 19th centu-ry. Béla Vikár introduced a considerable part of the folk traditions of the region in a complete volume of the Hungarian Folklore Collection series. In the 20th century a great number of collec-tions and monographs were dedicated to this topic, however, a part of the unpublished collections were unfortunately lost. The presently published folklore collection from Somogy County has been found recently in the Xántus János Museum of Győr, which was a part of the former Benedictine Historical Collection.

AbstractUsing Eggleton’s code, we performed a series of binary evolution calculations in order to investigate the criterion for dynamical instability of mass transfer in binaries. In these calculations, we took the donor’s mass on the zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) from 0.8 to 1.9 M⊙. For each mass, we systematically varied the mass of the core at the beginning of mass transfer and the mass of the companion star. We assumed that mass transfer was completely non-conservative and that all the mass that was lost from the system carried with it the orbital angular momentum of the accreting component. We found that the critical mass ratio, above which mass transfer is dynamically unstable, is from 1.1 to 1.3 in these red-giant binary systems.

IntroductionThe COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted health systems around the world. The objectives of this study are to estimate the overall effect of the pandemic on essential health service use and outcomes in Mexico, describe observed and predicted trends in services over 24 months, and to estimate the number of visits lost through December 2020.MethodsWe used health information system data for January 2019 to December 2020 from the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), which provides health services for more than half of Mexico’s population—65 million people. Our analysis includes nine indicators of service use and three outcome indicators for reproductive, maternal and child health and non-communicable disease services. We used an interrupted time series design and linear generalised estimating equation models to estimate the change in service use and outcomes from April to December 2020. Estimates were expressed using average marginal effects on the risk ratio scale.ResultsThe study found that across nine health services, an estimated 8.74 million patient visits were lost in Mexico. This included a decline of over two thirds for breast and cervical cancer screenings (79% and 68%, respectively), over half for sick child visits and female contraceptive services, approximately one-third for childhood vaccinations, diabetes, hypertension and antenatal care consultations, and a decline of 10% for deliveries performed at IMSS. In terms of patient outcomes, the proportion of patients with diabetes and hypertension with controlled conditions declined by 22% and 17%, respectively. Caesarean section rate did not change.ConclusionSignificant disruptions in health services show that the pandemic has strained the resilience of the Mexican health system and calls for urgent efforts to resume essential services and plan for catching up on missed preventive care even as the COVID-19 crisis continues in Mexico.

Carotid stump syndrome is defined as the persistence of retinal or cerebral ischaemic events with complete occlusion of the ipsilateral internal carotid artery. The aim of this retrospective cases series was to assess the outcomes for patients with carotid stump syndrome managed with surgical intervention. A series of 11 cases of carotid stump syndrome in nine patients presented to our tertiary vascular centre from October 2004 to February 2016. Indications for intervention were amaurosis fugax, transient ischaemic attacks and stroke. In total, 11 procedures were performed on nine patients including carotid angioplasty and stenting or carotid endarterectomy with patching. The mean follow-up period was 56.6 months. One patient suffered a myocardial infarction 30 days, post-operatively, and one patient was lost to follow-up. In the remaining seven patients, there was a complete resolution of symptoms. There were no incidents of death, stroke, cranial nerve injury, wound haematoma or procedural bleeding. Surgical exclusion of carotid stumps combined with dual antiplatelet agents was found to be a safe and effective treatment method for carotid stump syndrome.

The development of technological progress provides more opportunities for indirect monitoring of changes in the environment. Remote sensing is one of The most accessible and reliable sources of information. In this work, we used satellite images from the Landsat family. The theoretical justification of the research question is given. The research methodology was developed. Collection and processing of satellite images for various time periods. A series of schematic maps based on remote sensing Data has been created. As a result of digitization of satellite images, 9 glacier contours were obtained by year. We determined the area of the Romantics glacier and found that it lost at least 60% of its original area. These studies were used to build a series of cartographic schemes that clearly show the reduction of the glacier area. It is concluded that the use of remote sensing allows you to solve problems, monitoring the object. The use of this method allows not only to save time for field work, but also material costs for expedition equipment and various equipment. This method can be tested on any objects.

В статье рассматривается генезис рязанских крестовидных фибул второй половины IV – VII в. Основой для них были привозные щитковые и Т-образные фибулы. Выделены пять ранних серий крестовидных фибул. Серия 0 представлена фибулами, по пропорциям максимально близким щитковым фибулам. На основе этой серии складываются серии 1–3, различающиеся оформлением деталей. Развитие внутри серий характеризуется общими тенденциями, которые способствовали выработке стандарта, представленного в фибулах серии 4. Анализ технологии показал, что все фибулы выполнены литьем по восковой модели. Выявлены отдельные элементы, общие для одной из фибул серии 0 и двупластинчатых фибул 1 подгруппы. Обнаружена специфическая местная черта – технологический валик, позволявший мастеру правильно расположить детали на восковой модели и создававший дополнительное ребро жесткости. Отмечены и следы ковки, использовавшейся при формовке приемников и ножек фибул. The paper reviews origin of Ryazan crossbow fibulae dating to the second half of the 4th–7th centuries. These fibulae were made based on the design of imported brooches and T-shaped fibulae. Five early series of crossbow fibulae were singled out. Series 0 is represented by fibulae which, in terms of their proportions, are very similar to brooches. Series 0 was used as a basis for series 1–3 that show some differences in their components. Development within the series is characterized by common trends that helped work out a standard represented by the fibulae from series 4. The analysis of the technology demonstrates that all fibulae were made by a lost wax casting method. 68 КСИА. Вып. 270. 2023 г. The analysis also found several similar elements in one fibula from series 0 and the radiate-headed brooches from the 1st subgroup. A specific local distinctive feature, which is a technological roller that helped an artisan to place the parts on the wax model correctly and also served as an additional reinforcing rib, was singled out. Hammering marks were identified on catch plates and feet of the fibulae.
