The popularity of video games is at an all-time high among today’s population. Game designers and producers spend years on plot and character development, the creation of appropriate settings, and providing the player with a ludic experience that is both enriching and perplexing. This article looks at the creation of virtual utopian societies as the basis for contemporary video games. Just as the world today sees many conflicts over island rights, island sovereignties, and, sometimes, the creation of artificial islands that seek to escape governance of existing countries, video games have embraced the creation of a separate society for settings that explore new or extreme forms of individual, societal, and political development. Examining the BioShock series, this article looks at how video games and their designers have used utopic theories of society to create new experiences, potentialities, and ethical dilemmas for the players.

Lost & Found is a tabletop-to-mobile game series designed for teaching medieval religious legal systems. The long-term goals of the project are to change the discourse around religious laws, such as foregrounding the prosocial aspects of religious law such as collaboration, cooperation, and communal sustainability. This design case focuses on the evolution of the design of the mechanics and core systems in the first two tabletop games in the series, informed by over three and a half years’ worth of design notes, playable prototypes, outside design consultations, internal design reviews, playtests, and interviews.

In an age where the historical event is mediated increasingly through the still and moving image, new stress is placed on the archival image as surviving evidence of and performer of history. Lost Film Found Film asks what the scope is for re-intervention by artists who engage with the documentary archival. What is found in their reappropriation? What is lost in the remix? Through a discussion of key works by Jean-Luc Godard, Hito Steyerl, Harun Farocki, Jayce Salloum, Johan Grimonprez and Eyal Sivan, Lost Film Found Film offers a definition and a description of what I have called the Cinema of Aftermath. I define this as cinema that evolved in the aftermath of the Second World War, that deploys found footage film not only as a form of critique but also as a form of participation in wider historical and political events. I argue that the Cinema of Aftermath comments on politics and is also political. Central to its project is a questioning of the potency of the archival image in both its self-reflexive and wider cultural use. In three chapters, I explore how the Cinema of Aftermath recalibrates the meaning and renews the formal possibilities of the documentary, and analyse the performance of memory, truth and evidence by this aestheticisation of archival image.

Moller, Valerie. "Lost generation found: black youth at leisure". Indicator Project South Africa, Centre for Social & Development Studies, University of Natal, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1011554.

South African society has been preoccupied with educating and finding jobs for its volatile youth generation. This Indicator SA special report looks beyond the institutional settings of school and work, focusing instead on how young people use their leisure time. The leisure prospects of black urban youth in their teens and early twenties has been researched by the Youth Centre Project (YCP) of the Centre for Social and Development Studies at the University of Natal. This seminal three year research and development project was carried out between 1988 and 1991 with sponsorship from Germany's Konrad Adenauer Foundation. Leisure might be considered a lightweight issue compared to other pressing problems in South African society. Not so, the YCP research shows that leisure has an important role to play in developing the new South Africa. Indeed, leisure is a critical issue for the youth which can either spell hope and opportunity or frustration and regression into crime and violence. Multiple phases of research were undertaken at the national and local level among rank and file black youth to address the many facets of leisure in township and peri-urban settings: • A nationwide time use survey recorded the leisure activities of young people in the 16-24 years age bracket and inquired into attitudes towards leisure and lifestyles. The study for which participants kept activity diaries, may be the first of its kind in South Africa. • Smaller scale investigations in the Durban Functional Region (DFR) looked into the leisure resources available and the human potential to make optimal use of leisure opportunities: • Youth groups and clubs operating in the DFR were the focus of a special youth self-help intervention. A regional youth group, the YCP Working Group, formed to serve the training and development needs of existing youth clubs in the DFR. • A special study was made of the particular leisure needs of young people living in four shack areas in the DFR. Several studies focused on venues for youth to meet, including the need for a regional youth centre in the Pinetown area. An inventory of DFR leisure facilities compiled for the project revealed the mismatch between existing leisure facilities and young people's views on ideal leisure venues. • A nationwide poll among all population groups confirmed the need for multi-purpose neighbourhood youth centres which offer educational as well as recreational leisure outlets. This special report addresses several leisure dilemmas facing South Africa today. Leisure is an elusive concept which is difficult to define. Our findings indicate that leisure means much more than recreation or play to young people. Educational and learning experiences are attractive but neglected leisure options which may have greater appeal than pure recreational pastimes. The evidence suggests that this is not 'a lost generation' but one starved for meaningful leisure outlets. Semi-leisure is the concept introduced to convey this more serious side to leisure activities. The inquiry concludes that marrying semi-leisure with pure leisure may go a long way towards meeting youth demands for constructive leisure at home, in youth groups, and in community centres and projects. The research findings reveal tensions between the leisure needs of young men and women, between youth in and out of jobs, between church and politicised youth, and between township and shackland youth. The dilemma is how to apply an equity solution to meet the spare time needs of youth from these diverse backgrounds. Airing these leisure dilemmas represents an important first step towards formulating a leisure policy for the new era. The case studies and commentaries in this special report demonstrate that rank and file black youth, in spite of the political violence, state repression during the emergency period, and social neglect, are amazingly adept at using their leisure creatively. Clearly, this potential calls for the formulation of an equally imaginative national leisure policy to enable South African youth to realise their dreams and aspirations.

This creative arts research project investigates contemporary material culture through a study of lost property collected at a number of New South Wales arts centres both before and after the advent of COVID-19. The focus on New South Wales arts centres was developed to provide a structure for the project that utilised existing network connections and resources. The nature of an object that is first lost and then found evokes and implies a complex series of associations related to memory and experience. This study suggests that with the application of museum practices or protocols and studio production, each separate collection of lost objects inherently develops its own taxonomy as a collection of artifacts. Significantly the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is measured by transformation in the symbolic register of these humble "lost property" objects when examined through a curatorial lens and with their material translation to the status of contemporary art.

AbstractA teenage girl’s journey of leaving her home in Iran to move to Canada with her family is shaped around a secret box of memories that needs to accompany the main character to her new home in Canada. The story focuses on themes of belonging, “home”, identity; and experiences of Iranian teenage women told through a simple tale of teenagehood in Iran. The teenage girl experiences an identity crisis that starts with the migration journey itself and as the family arrives in the Canadian airport for the very first time, new insights into their immigrant realities unfold. The story is called Things Lost, Things Not Lost, And the Ones That Were Found on The Way. It is a simple story of a family’s journey to Canada, and it begins when the family is leaving Tehran, ending when they arrive at Toronto’s Pearson International airport. Told in the voice of the family’s teenage daughter, it is a mix of imagination and experiences I personally have lived through. What I have tried to capture in this playful snapshot of a family’s journey are the feelings and emotions they experience before immigrating to a new country. These feelings of letting go are intertwined with meaningful pieces of identity and the journey is full of contradictions that mimic the paradoxes and the challenges immigrant families experience as they try to adapt to their new life, including changes in family dynamics and gender relations.

AbstractSimilar to many cities, Vienna (Austria) implemented measures to provide more space for pedestrians and cyclists during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this chapter, the implementation process of the temporary shared spaces and “pop-up” bike lanes is described, and the evaluation results regarding their usage as well as the political decisions of their early removal are presented. With video recordings and manual counting, we found that pop-up bike lanes were well adopted by cyclists, but temporary shared spaces have largely failed to attract pedestrians. The possible reasons are discussed as well as the criteria for better implementation of temporary walking and cycling infrastructure in the future. Drawing on the multiple streams theory, we link the decision of suspending all temporary infrastructures to the political situation at the time with pop-up bike lanes as a highly controversial issue before the local elections in October 2020 and a change of government afterward. We conclude that this presents a lost opportunity to permanently redistribute road space for active mobility, but future initiatives could learn from the Vienna case by thinking more strategically about political aspects.

AbstractMigration implies both benefits and costs. The latter include a possible breakdown of social networks, and thus a loss of social capital. Although there is some literature on the evolution of family networks after migration, not as much is known about friendship. This article assesses the quality of friendships between German emigrants and their friends who stayed in Germany. In particular, it asks three research questions: (a) How does the quality of relationships with friends in Germany differ from the quality of other relationships after migration? (b) How is friendship quality after migration related to socio-demographic or socio-economic factors? And (c) is there a link between friendship quality and the subjective well-being of emigrants? Results indicate that friendship quality measured as frequency of contact with friends falls in the middle range of contact frequency, as emigrants typically have more contact with partners and children, but less contact with some other relatives, compared to close friends. Furthermore, several determinants of contact frequency (e.g. gender, age, length of stay and household constellation) can be identified and correlations with various aspects of subjective well-being were found.

Two steel substrate test panels were developed to represent common plate thicknesses found on naval vessels and scanned using the Babcock developed ultrasonic technique. One sample comprised of a series of slotted surface breaking flaws of varying widths and through thicknesses to represent fracturing/cracking. The inspection method detected simulated cracking to a depth of 2mm and 0.5mm in width. The second sample included numerous loss of wall thickness areas of varying diameters and through thicknesses, with the smallest detectable loss of wall thickness being 0.1mm at a 15mm diameter. After proving confidence in detection, there was a need to characterise flaws to provide support and ascertain a repair action. Samples were produced that were subjected to either impact or heat exposure to induce realistic representative damage. The practical ultrasonic method was successfully used to independently characterise between the samples, with induced de-laminations caused by blisters, and multi layered matrix cracking caused by varying levels of projectile impacts, due to their unique morphology.

Abstract Chemical composition differences between the feedstock powder and the final coating of a series of composite abradable coatings were investigated. Graphite filler material mass distributions in the coating, overspray powder and burned power is calculated. A preliminary mechanism of graphite loss during the deposition process is established. It is found that the graphite content in the coating is significantly lower than that in the feedstock powder. Over 70% graphite in the feedstock powder is lost during the deposition process. Melting and shrinkage of the nickel shell of the nickel cladded graphite particle as flying through the flame, which resulted in the exposure of the graphite core to the flame and substrate, is the main reason for graphite loss and chemical composition change between the feedstock powder and the final coating. A random manner of particle structure transformation in the flame and its reactions with the spray environment is concluded as an important reason for the poor process repeatability of abradable coatings.

Stability of smoke layer induced by a fire will be studied in this paper. A series of full-scale burning tests were carried out to study the interaction of the hot smoke layer with a sprinkler water spray. A new rig was built to give a smoke layer. The results show that the stability of a smoke layer will be disturbed by the discharged water spray. The operating pressure of the sprinkler system is a key point. When the smoke layer lost its stability, the dragging force acting on the smoke layer was found to be less than the buoyancy.

A transient fluid acoustic model is compared with experimental data obtained from induced pump trips in a mercury loop. The facility consists of a stainless steel loop filled with 19,000 kg (21 tons) of mercury that is motivated by a 41 KW (55 hp) centrifugal pump through 37 m of piping in a full transit. At nominal operation, the volumetric flow rate from the pump discharge is 1400 LPM and velocities throughout the loop range from 0.3 to 3 m/s. A computer model of the mercury loop was made using the fluid transient code from Applied Flow Technology Impulse™. Loss of power to the mercury centrifugal pump may lead to fluidhammer, in which a cavity formed in low pressure regions created downstream of the pump outlet after the pump power is lost, collapses and gives rise to a pressure pulse. Fluidhammer has been created experimentally through a series of induced trips of the mercury centrifugal pump. Pump speed, volumetric flow rates, and dynamic pressures were gathered during the transient events. This data has provided information about the initialization, magnitude, and propagation of the pressure pulses associated with fluidhammer. The data gathered from these tests is presented and compared to simulation results gained from the computer model. Pressure magnitudes found in trip simulations at normal operating conditions nearly match those found in experiments, and other trends of the time traces show reasonable agreement.

Abstract During the construction planning phase of any new well, drilling engineers often look at offset well data to identify information that could be used to drill the new well more efficiently. This is generally a time-consuming process. The objective was to develop a recommender system that would automate the process of identifying potential hazards and current technical limiters. The developed methodology consisted of three parts. First, a system is developed that can parse textual information found in daily reports to identify key events that occurred in offset wells. Second, time series data from these same offset wells is processed to identify events directly from the patterns in the data, and a reconciliation is done between the time-series data and the contextual data wherever there is a conflict between the two datasets. Finally, KPIs are computed that enable the comparison of various drilling choices and their consequences across the set of offset wells and recommendation are automatically generated for improvements in the construction of a new well. The system was developed on a set of 7 recently drilled wells chosen from a specific North American land operation. The recommendations were compared to recommendation made through manual processing of the data for validation of the approach. The recommender identified invisible lost time (ILT) and potential non-productive time (NPT) scenarios, optimal depth-based drilling parameter for the new well, and recommendations on BHA and flat time improvement areas. Open-source natural language processing libraries were used in this project and were very effective in extracting events from textual data. An automated system was built to guide the drilling engineers in the planning phase of a well construction activity. Given a set of offset wells, the system combined both the time series data and textual data to arrive at these recommendations. The approach upon further refinement is expected to save 30 to 40 hours of the engineer's time per well and shorten the learning curve.

Cyclists are usually afraid of using the front brake of their bicycles aggressively. They fear the danger of falling over the handlebar, sustaining serious neck or head injuries. Preventing this pitch-over can be addressed using electronic brake assistance. But little work is found on the dynamics involved, especially of the early phase were mitigating the pitch-over is still possible by brake pressure reduction. To address this, an instrumented bicycle equipped with sensors measuring variables of motion including absolute over ground velocity and attitude is presented. The need for a novel instrumented bicycle capable of capturing pitch-over dynamics and detecting when ground contact is lost, is pointed out. Needed sensors and their calibration is worked out, and the instrumented bicycle is built and tested. The capturing capabilities are shown, and robust jet precise methods of ground contact loss detection are presented.

This brief provides a roadmap for stakeholders interested in the underlying practices that create stranded credits and what can be done to improve them. To begin, we provide specific definitions of the terms and practices implicated in the creation of stranded credits. While researchers and policy leaders have increased their attention on the problem of stranded credits, this brief lays out in detail how they are created, why they matter, and what can be done to better balance the interests of institutions, students, and a modern economy that relies on postsecondary education for the development of a competitive workforce.

This mixed methods participatory study explores equity and fairness in access to Vietnam’s Covid-19 vaccination programme, when the Covid-19 vaccine was scarce, with a focus on internal migrant workers. At the beginning of the pandemic large numbers of Vietnamese migrants from rural areas lost their jobs. Migrants are vital to the Vietnamese economy. Many factories that produce goods for export employ internal migrants. Before the pandemic, these workers faced inequalities of access to available health services and nutritious food. Although the Vietnamese state aspires to universal access to health, internal migrant workers living outside their village do not have long-term household book registration, which is the key to access many public services including health care and prevention. We found that migrant workers, especially those working in the export zones where factories produce for export, did have access to vaccination. However, there are intersectional inequalities between internal migrants based on other characteristics such as (dis)ability.

Verdicts returned by modern courts of justice in the context of sovereign debt lawsuits have upheld a ratable (proportional) interpretation of so-called “pari passu” clauses in debt contracts which, literally, promise creditors they will be dealt with equitably. Such verdicts have given individual creditors the right to interfere with payments to others, in situation where the sovereign had failed to make proportional payments. Contract originalists argue that this interpretation of pari passu clauses has no historical foundation. Historically, they claim, pari passu clauses never granted individual creditors a unilateral right to block payments to other bondholders assenting to a government debt restructuring proposal. This article shows this claim is incorrect. Drawing on novel archival research, it argues that pari passu clauses find one potent historical origin in the operation of a now forgotten sovereign bankruptcy tribunal, the London stock exchange. Under the law of the stock exchange, departure from ratable payments did create a unilateral right for individual creditors to interfere with sovereign debt discharges. In fact, ratable distributions provided the touchstone for the stock exchange sanctioned sovereign debt discharge system. What is more, sophisticated contract drafters availed themselves of the logic. The result was a weaponization of pari passu clauses, and their inscription into sovereign debt covenants in the 19th century. The article concludes that the modern debate on the role of clauses in sovereign debt contracts cannot be held without thorough reconsideration of the history of sovereign bankruptcy.

This study examines whether Jamaica's free public healthcare policy affectedhealth status and labor supply of adult individuals. It compares outcomes of adults without health insurance versus their insured counterparts, before and after policy implementation. The study finds that the policy reduced both the likelihood of suffering illnesses with associated lost work days and the number of lost days due to illnesses by 28.6 percent and 34 percent, respectively. Consistent with the absence of "employment lock", no effects are found on employment at the extensive margin. However, consistent with a reduced number of days lost due to illnesses, there is a positive effect of 2.15 additional weekly labor hours. This is primarily a labor supply effect as the study shows that both reported and imputed hourly wages decreased by 0.15 and 0.06 log-points respectively. Back-of-the-envelope calculations suggest that the policy added a yearly average of US$PPP 26.6 million worth of net real production to the economy during the period 2008-12.

A reliable satellite-based black-sky albedo time series is a crucial part of detecting changes in the climate. This thesis studies the solutions to several uncertainties impairing the quality of the black-sky albedo time series. These solutions include creating a long dynamic aerosol optical depth time series for enhancing the removal of atmospheric effects, a method to fill missing data to improve spatial and temporal coverage, and creating a function to correctly model the diurnal variation of melting snow albedo. Mathematical methods are the center pieces of the solutions found in this thesis. Creating a melting snow albedo function and the construction of an aerosol optical depth time series lean on a linear regression approach, whereas the process to fill missing values is based on gradient boosting, a machine learning method that is in turn based on decision trees. These methods reflect the basic nature of these problems as well as the need to take into account the large amounts of satellite-based data and computational resources available.
