TThe present essay features Das Magazin, a popular East German monthly magazine that appeared in the GDR for the first time in 1954. The author analyzes the photographic depiction of women in issues of the 1950s. This analysis starts with the magazine’s prominent and well-researched nude photographs, but later focuses on other images of female bodies, i.e. in photo montages, to explore the different variations in which women were depicted in Das Magazin. A close examination of the images in question, their position and contextualization within Das Magazin allows for a look beyond the pages of the printed product and sheds light on the work of the layout artists. In doing so, the author argues that its creators revived certain visual strategies that had already been cultivated by the popular press in the interwar period and which were also existent beyond the boundaries of the GDR press. Thus, the notion of GDR magazines’ production practices can be enriched by transnational and historical perspectives.

The aim of the scientific research included in the paper was to show the issue of Polish women and the cultural changes in the Polish People’s Republic in the end of 1980s. These transformations were reflected in women’s magazines, including in «Zwierciadło», being also a platform for disseminating the activities of the only official women’s movement at that time – League of Polish Women among readers. The research studies are new; so far scientific research on the importance of the women’s press on the subject of «Zwierciadło» has been conducted only by the author of this study. The method of press analysis, analysing individual studies of the «Zwierciadło» magazine, and the historical method of analysing source documents and literature on the subject were used in the study. As a result of the study, an image of women achieving professional, social and, thus, personal success, disseminated in «Zwierciadło», was shown. The image also demonstrated some role models for women – what the women’s success which Polish women should strive for can and should look like. «Zwierciadło: Pismo Ligi Kobiet Polskich», a magazine addressed to women, was published in 1982–1990 and promoted the organization and its achievements. The magazine sought to present issues concerning the life of Polish women, their everyday problems, but also successes to be enjoyed by Polish women and women from abroad. The magazine provided examples of women’s careers. Professional work was to be a way to personal success and social advancement. The image of successful women presented in the magazine differed from the possibility to achieve the success by typical magazine’s readers, including League of Polish Women members.

Abstract Magazines and other media promote beauty standards and gender roles in feature articles and advertising. Publications present idealized images of women often in contrast to the average reader’s appearance. Analyses of such images suggest gender roles are reinforced through subtle cues embedded in hand gestures, eye gaze, head posture, and body position (Goffman, 1976). This study analyzed a recurrent feature in two different magazine presenting an idealized standard of aging to mature women. The first magazine, MORE, featured mature women, typically between the ages of 40 and 60, with the banner of “This is what (woman’s age) looks like.” MORE magazine is no longer in press, but another magazine, Women’s Day, began a similar recurrent column featuring a women between 40 and 60 with the title “Own Your Age—Yes, I am (women’s age).” Both features included copy describing the woman’s perspective on life and aging and a listing of specific beauty products that she uses. These features were analyzed as advertisements, because they promote a message about being a woman of a certain age and the specific products used to achieve that look. Three researchers coded 43 images from MORE magazine and 30 images from Woman’s Day for physical characteristics of aging and evidence of Goffman’s gender codes. Most photos presented women who appeared younger than their stated age. Images showed the presence of Goffman’s gender codes including feminine touch, ritualization of subordination, licensed withdrawal, and infantilization and were more prevalent in the MORE feature than Woman’s Day column.

This paper provides a critical look at the ways in which the female sporting body is discursively constructed within Triathlon Magazine Canada (TMC), Canada’s only triathlon-exclusive magazine. By exploring both visual and narrative representations of the athletic female sporting body, this paper exposes some of the discursive tensions that seem to persist in this popular triathlon-specific text. Both the sport of triathlon and the bodies of triathletes may each be understood as sites where essentialist ideas about the body can be effectively disrupted or challenged but TMC represents a façade of gender progressivism insofar as it (re)produces many of the same heteronormative representations of gender found in other popular sport magazines.

To this day, GDR magazines have hardly been found worthy of a closer analytical look. As the present essay will argue, they have been treated primarily as containers for propaganda. In the introduction to this special issue on GDR magazines, the authors discuss why this has been the case so far and why GDR magazines in particular would be worth an examination. The preface pleads for a conscious and more differentiated approach to the history and the cultural relevance of a central media format of the GDR: its magazines. Periodical and magazine studies deal mostly with magazines from Western capitalist societies. GDR magazines, however, originated in a completely different environment. The authors explain why, when exploring these objects, long-established and proven methods of periodical research must always be questioned first. To complement this, the introduction draws on a number of exemplary short analyses in an attempt to make initial suggestions of dealing academically with GDR magazines. Based on these observations, theses are developed and presented on what could distinguish GDR magazines or what might be the focus of future GDR magazine research. And finally, the essay will feature selected GDR magazines as well as insights from the workshop that gave birth to this special issue.

The paper examines the way in which a male figure is portrayed in one of the oldest (at the same time, the most widely circulated) Yugoslav women's magazines, „Bazar“. In a methodological sense, the work is based on the data obtained from the analysis of textual and visual messages in the editions published in the tenth anniversary year (1973). The aim of the paper is to provide insight into 25 issues of an exemplary socialist magazine in order to 1) look at the media portrayal of men in the socialist women's press, 2) discuss some aspects of the construction of masculinity in the socialist media discourse, and 3) review the way gender relations in Yugoslav society were portrayed in the narratives of the women's magazine „Bazar“.

Studying about an American popular culture product such as the Cosmopolitan magazine for American Studies’ scholars can no longer be framed in studying how it is operated within the U.S. only. Instead, a look at how it is being transferred across nation’s borders and how it is regulated in other nations become a concern also to scholars. Time and space is no longer a border for a world that is transnational, so global values that are being sold in the magazine’s advertisements are being made continually popular by inserting local ideas. How has Cosmopolitan successfully achieved its globality? The following article discusses on the transnational culture that Cosmopolitan and its magazine advertisement brings and howit has taken in the local to support the global.Key words: Cosmopolitan, Global, Local, Transnational, Popular culture

Teresa Preston, managing editor of Kappan magazine, summarizes how Kappan authors have addressed student and educator stress in its past issues. Stress and anxiety were not frequent topics in the magazine’s early years, but they began being covered more frequently beginning in the 1980s. Authors sought to understand the roots of student anxiety and how teachers might help students manage their feelings of stress. Some looked at the climate of schools themselves and suggested that standardized tests, a focus on ambitious goals, and increased academic content in kindergarten were causing more stress among students — and sometimes teachers. Stress in school was not limited to students, and Kappan articles considered how educators could manage their own stress.

This research examined cover blurbs on popular men’s and women’s magazines and the messages they communicate to their readers about women. The content analysis looked at the covers of Esquire, Gentlemen’s Quarterly, Vogue, and Good Housekeeping from 1999 through 2003 to see what these magazines were cultivating and framing through their cover text during the time surrounding the new millennium. The women’s magazines examined promoted gendered messages, messages encouraging an idealistic or unattainable ideal of women, to their readers more so than the men’s magazines researched. There also appeared to be an increase of gendered messages in the men’s and women’s magazine sample as a whole from 1999 through 2003. In order to counteract these findings and for progress to be made during the current millennium, individuals working within the communication field must realize the power of the written word and make efforts to discourage the presentation of gendered messages.

In the second half of the sixties, rock music and rock criticism emerge in the United States. The protagonists of the two spheres gather to create a sense of camaraderie, but a third field also arises from that encounter. It is first and foremost a literary one, neither really musical, nor completely criticism-oriented. As a result, it challenges us to discuss rock criticism in order to better understand literature rather than music. Lester Bangs in particular dwells within that apparent paradox. As the figurehead of this little group of authors formed in early rock fanzines and magazines, he not only describes the rock myths but also discusses the way they are written. The portrait of the “aspiring writer” originating from the tradition of “literary journalism” also appears in his texts. This links the conditions of writing in the press to the situation of the fresh writer-to-be in literature. Similarly, auguries and echoes of such discourses can be found during the same period in American “direct cinema” and French rock criticism. For instance Donn Alan Pennebaker already underlines in 1965 the need for a non-journalistic criticism on rock in his documentary Dont Look Back. Later, Yves Adrien follows Lester Bangs works. Finally, forty years on, Nick Tosches, Peter Guralnick, Greil Marcus and Lenny Kaye continue today to reshape verbally this initial experience of writing and publishing. This thesis studies the unexpected birth of a new literary field through mythography. Though short-lived, it was nonetheless fecund

This research intended to explore the issues on “fact” and “fiction” of the written clothing in Eileen Chang’s novel “Legend” and in “Lin Loon Magazine”. We have first conducted a content analysis and narrative analysis to describe the implicit characteristics of written clothing. Through reading “Legend” and “Lin Loon Magazine” interlextually, we have tried to understand the ideology of the author/editor, as well as the homogeneity, heterogeneity, and diversity displayed during the “reshaping” process of written clothing. The above discussion has then been relocated into the historical context of Shanghai in the thirties. Eileen Chang and the “clothing consciousness” of the written clothing of the young ladies in “Legend” and that of “Lin Loon Magazine” could help us understand why Shanghai citizens in the thirties identified with the “fashion consciousness” of that time. In addition, we have pointed out the similarity and discrepancy in the awareness and attitude between the “fashion consciousness” of Eileen Chang and her novel “Legend” and that of “Lin Loon Magazine”. With the exploration of “clothing consciousness” and the concept of “trendiness” in “Legend” and “Lin Loon Magazine”, we have reinterpreted issues on the era universality and individual creativity of modernity theories. Through the narrative analysis, we have realized that Eileen Chang’s written clothing has offered a unique perspective in the research of Chinese history. After comprehending the historical picture of the “juxtaposition of the Chinese and western style” and the “mix of the new and the old” in Shanghai in the thirties, we have now obtained a clearer picture of such a unique angle.

In recent years, men’s fashion magazines have become a new media genre that attracts lots of attention. The sales, advertisements, and publications of the men’s fashion magazines have reached a remarkable performance. Media is an important social institution to shape gender images. Thus, this study aims to explore what kind of masculinity that men’s fashion magazines in Taiwan represents? How to achieve the masculinity through consumption? Are there any differences in masculinity between transnational and local men’s fashion magazines? What is the variation in men’s fashion magazines in different periods? This study expects to describe the masculinity represented in men’s fashion magazines of Taiwan to enrich the media and men’s research resources. This study drawn on the masculinity theory based on the sociologist R.W. Connell’s, and applied a methodology of quantitative content analysis. The subjects were the international Chinese edition of men’s fashion magazine GQ and the local men’s fashion magazine men’s uno. The reason to focus the analysis on GQ and men’s uno is due to the fact that they are the most popular and long-running men’s fashion magazines in Taiwan respectively. By means of analyzing these two magazines published during 1997 to 2006, this research tries to understand the masculinity styles represented on the magazines’ cover. The major finding revealed that the large numbers of men represented in men’s fashion magazines of Taiwan were young men who aged between 18 and 35 (with 74.8% appearing in the “cover figure” category and 71.2% in the “featured people” category). Most of the men in the magazines were entertainment workers with appealing looks (with 90.1% appearing in the “cover figure” category and 81.9% in the “featured people” category). As for men’s appearance types, the Trendy Cool type (43.2%) was the majority, the next types were Gentle (14.4%), Tough/Strong (11.7%), and Serious/Sophisticated (11.7%). Secondly, 60.5% of the article headlines on the magazines’ covers were related to the consumption issues. The topics of the headlines were centered on fashion (39.6%) and featured people (29.8%). Furthermore, comparing the transnational with the local magazine, there were differences in men’s age, occupation, appearance type, body type, and the topic and product category that the magazine emphasized. In conclusion, men’s fashion magazines of Taiwan indeed appear a different kind of masculinity that I identify as “stylish masculinity”. This kind of masculinity focuses much attention on men’s appearances, and it’s achieved through a variety of ways of product consumption. The stylish masculinity overthrows some definitions of the traditional masculinity, but on the other hand, it still maintained some disciplines of traditional masculinity. Analyzing the transnational and local men’s fashion magazines, we can understand even if the international men’s fashion magazine, like GQ, appeared and influenced the local male in a global way. From different cultures, magazine origins and readerships, the local men’s fashion magazine still can present some diverse features in many aspects. Finally, when the transnational fashion magazines introduce the international fashion information to local readers, it also conveys many global viewpoints about masculinity at the same time. However, it’s still possible that the publisher takes a localized strategy in order to cater for the local life and culture.

These days, if wolves roam close to human settlements, people often argue that there is something problematic and unnatural in it. This is the case especially in western Finland where wolf packs are being observed after a long period of absence. Not everyone living in western Finland has welcomed wolves as neighbours. Local people can argue that wolves should not live in western Finland because there are no wilderness areas there. Wolves have been connected to the wilderness in many countries and regions in the world. In some areas, the notion that the wolf belongs to the wilderness is old: For instance, historian Aleksander Pluskowski has argued that there was a persistent conceptual link between wolves and the wilderness in Britain and Scandinavia during the Middle Ages. In this chapter, I look into this notion and trace its history in the Finnish context by studying newspaper reports, magazine articles and contemporary literature. I argue that the idea that wolves belong to the wilderness is a relatively new and controversial notion connected to various social and environmental changes. Interestingly, at the same time as the idea that the wolf is a wilderness species strengthened, the Finnish environment underwent changes that meant that the areas that could be called wilderness became fewer.

AbstractThis chapter examines the rise of literary advice in Anglo-American periodical culture from 1884 to 1895. Capitalizing on a moment when fiction became both more self-consciously artistic and more potentially lucrative, literary advice of this era addressed the full range of literary practice and the attendant practical activities that made it possible. The chapter resituates the landmark “Art of Fiction” debate (1884)—an event crucially sponsored by the magazines—as the opening of an era of practical discussion that was soon after taken up in trade journals devoted specifically to authorship. The practical advice dispensed by these journals—including tools, tricks, tips, and gossip—focuses on the form of the short story, creating a loop with a form that was itself a magazine staple. This interactive looping is considered in the conclusion, where the chapter examines a systematic course in literary art offered by Atalanta, a late-Victorian “Girl’s Magazine.”

Ironies abound in our academic architectural design studios. They are insightful ironies if we confront them. We often do not, preferring to focus our attention on the architectural magazine, gallery exhibition, and prize-winning portfolio. These venues are necessary for promoting work, but such an argument isn’t useful or insightful. It is more important to look beyond the glossy spread and backlit GIF to our actual methods of production. It is here, in the reflective consideration of design process, that the insightful ironies hold deeper potential to shape our work and impact the world around us.

Abstract: The specialized publications in architecture facilitate the diffusion of ideas, methods and techniques of the particular period of its existence. Its contents, analyzed over time, make up an atlas of thought capable of framing the social interpretation of a spatial-temporal context under the prism of the constructive. Jean Badovici founded in 1923, together with the journalist Christian Zervos, the magazine L'Architecture Vivante (1923-1933), edited by Albert Morancé. The appearance on its pages of an architecture technically well- defined, accompanied by critiques written with critical rigor by its director, or for the authors of the works, they did of her a prestigious instrument of spread of the new ideas among the professional public. A contemporary revisiting of the texts and published projects, allows to detect the intellectual itinerary carried out by its persons in charge with regard to the convulsed and changeable European architectural environment in which they fixed its look. In this evolution manifested, in just the period of a decade, we must emphasize the prominence given to the work of Le Corbusier who, from the closure of L'Esprit Nouveau in 1925, did not hesitate in considering it as an excellent tool for exposure to the discussion of his ideas, including in it projects and writings made for a modern architecture. The systemic transformation has significantly increased and diversified the music press market. Liquidation of the monopoly, privatization, censorship abolition and media pluralism are just some of the factors that contributed to shaping new cultural policy in Poland. The research material used for this paper’s analytical purposes consists of Polish music magazines; based on a query covering over 110 journals being published since 1946 to the present, a historical and comparative analysis was made. It allowed to determine what new solutions the publishers started to put into practice to make their magazines more attractive. Moreover, it showed a clear fragmentation of the market. After ’89, popular music magazines began to prevail; there are also many specialist journals devoted to a specific topic. A look at cultural transformation from the perspective of the music press is therefore an innovative idea, combining knowledge from the borderline of musicology, cultural studies, and press studies.

European publishing in the early 19th century promoted the dissemination and knowledge of historical heritage through illustrations. For the first time, ordinary people could see depictions of buildings that had marked the milestones and workings of civilisations over time and in different places. The favoured historical period was the Middle Ages, a time in which the noble origins of European peoples were rooted. Castles were the emblem of those civilisations whose national identity needed to be sustained. In this contribution, we look at castles published in Italian magazines from 1834 to around 1850. A selection of the castle subjects depicted and commented on has allowed us to address the graphic and figurative aspects, to dwell on some of the information and narratives offered to the public with the intention of elevating them culturally. What emerges is a singular picture in which the defensive or military-technical aspect was not considered, but the castles were given their historical character.

Abstract This survey reports on motive power development for the previous year ending in August 2021. Invitations to participate were sent to a number of locomotive builders. Railway industry trade journals and other rail magazines were also consulted for additional input. Similar to the previous year, new locomotive production has been very low with a strong emphasis placed on locomotive overhauls and modernizations. Of the few new locomotives constructed in North America, Progress Rail and Wabtec have both continued working on new power sources for locomotives including battery electric, biodiesel and hydrogen. In Sweden, Alstom operated the first train running on hydrogen. For the first time since 2001, Amtrak received new diesel road locomotives for its non-electrified routes with VIA Rail’s new locomotives and trainsets not far behind. Finally, the survey will look at a motive power development of an 80-year-old locomotive as UP implements I-ETMS as Positive Train Control on their operational Big Boy steam engine using a trailing diesel locomotive. General information will be provided. For further details on any of the developments in the design of railway locomotives the reader is encouraged to reach out the original equipment manufacturers.

Recently Additive Manufacturing (AM) has been hailed as the “third industrial revolution” by The Economist magazine [April-2012]. Precision of the product manufactured by AM largely depends on the on line process diagnostics and control. AM caters to the quest for a material to suit the service performance, which is almost as old as the human civilization. An enabling technology which can build, repair or reconfigure components layer by layer or even pixel by pixel with appropriate materials to match the performance will enhance the productivity and thus reduce energy consumption. With the globalization, “Economic Space” for an organization is now spreads all across the globe. The promise of AM for Global Platform for precision additive manufacturing largely depends on the speed and accuracy of in-situ optical diagnostics and its capability to integrate with the process control. The two main groups of AM are powder bed (e.g. Laser Sintering) and pneumatically delivered powder (e.g. Direct Metal Deposition [DMD]) to fabricate components. DMD has closed loop capability, which enables better dimension and thermal cycle control. This enables one to deposit different material at different pixels with a given height directly from a CAD drawing. The feed back loop also controls the thermal cycle. New optical Sensors are either developed or being developed to control geometry using imaging, cooling rate by monitoring temperature, microstructure, temperature and composition using optical spectra. Ultimately these sensors will enable one to “Certify as you Build”. Flexibility of the process is enormous and essentially it is an enabling technology to materialize many a design. Several cases will be discussed to demonstrate the additional capabilities possible with the new sensors. Conceptually one can seat in Singapore and fabricate in Shanghai. Such systems will be a natural choice for a Global “Economic Space”.

This paper discusses a series of academic design studios that explore ways to imbue pedagogies of digital fabrication with a critical sensibility rooted in architectural precedent. The work looks to the Case Study House Program spearheaded by John Entenza of Arts & Architecture magazine in Los Angeles (1945- 1966) as a model for how architects can re-conceptualize and re-materialize domestic space through an understanding of the limits and possibilities of new manufacturing techniques. Just as the architects of the Case Study House Program crafted new prototypes for domestic living inspired by the postwar (modernist) logics of mass production, this work speculates how contemporary (postmodernist) logics of mass customization can inform new models of domestic space appropriate for today. The research explores the architectural detail as a locus for reconsidering contemporary domesticity in the context of new technologies of design, fabrication, and assembly. Adapting ideas from research into architectural components from seminal case studies, the work tests ways to employ technologies of mass-customization to reconsider the com-ponent’s definition, its construction, and its assembly into larger configurations of structure and space. The ambition is to develop new understandings of part/whole relationships that reflect contemporary modes of living at all scales, from the component to the broader architectural organization. By melding computational workflows and advanced fabrication processes with the pragmatics of building and assembly, this work advocates a subtle but nonetheless radical shift in how we design and make architecture. And by grounding the work both conceptually and tectonically in precedent and in architecture’s social capacities, the studio pedagogy fosters a critical ethos that sometimes is lacking in academic approaches to design computation and digital fabrication.
