Linen production is one of the long-standing traditional crafts and plays an important role in the economic and cultural life of the H’mong tribe. In the socio-economic activities of the H’mong tribe in Cat Cat in particular and in Sa Pa in general, although traditional crafts are not the main income-generating occupations, they are religious activities of the H’Mong tribe and contribute to the creation of products that serve daily garment needs. Currently, linen production as well as many other traditional crafts of H’mong tribe has been focused on development and conservation by the local authorities and people. It has been turned into unique and attractive tourism products that make practical contribution to economic activities and cultural preservation of the local community.

Sophisticated mummification using chemical preservation was prevalent in ancient Yemeni civilization as noted in the 4th century B.C. mummies of the National Museum of Yemen, Sana’a, used in this study. Five of these mummies were used to evaluate hydrolytic enzymes produced as a result of fungal contamination. Forty-seven fungal species were isolated, thereby reflecting a high degree of contamination which may have resulted from the poor ventilation and preservation system.Aspergilluswas the most common genus isolated (48.9%). Fifteen isolates exhibited ability to produce cellulase (EC; 3.2.1.4),Aspergillus candidusbeing the highest cellulose-producer. Pectin lyase (PL, EC; 4.2.2.2) and pectin methyl esterase (PME, EC; 3.1.1.11) were produced byTrichoderma hamatum, whereas chitinase (EC; 3.2.1.14) was produced byAspergillus niger. Protease activity was noted by onlyCladosporium herbarum. The higher activities of these fungal hydrolytic enzymes represent the major threats of biodeterioration including deteriorating linen bandages as well as the mummy bodies. Therefore, it is recommended to improve the preservation system of the mummies at the National Museum to minimize the contamination up to the lowest level and protect the mummies from biodeterioration.

The content of the report of Ivan Fedorovich Kruzenshtern at the meeting of the Petrovsky Academy of Sciences «On the preservation of the health of sailors on ships» (1838) is considered from the point of view of a historical example of a deep understanding and interest of the commander of a warship in preserving the health of the crew. In his opinion, the reason for the high morbidity and mortality on the ships of the Russian Fleet were damp, insufficiently ventilated rooms, inadequate food, substandard drinking water, dirty linen and clothing of sailors (due to the inability to wash), lack of fresh vegetables, as well as tedious ship work and the sad disposition of the crew. Admiral I. F. Kruzenshtern instructed young officers in all ways to exclude these reasons for preserving the health and combat capability of the crew. The purpose of the study: to analyze archival materials about the views of Admiral I. F. Kruzenshtern on the issues of preserving the health of sailors during long sea voyages.Materials and methods. Retrospective analysis and scientific generalization of archival materials of Admiral of the Russian Fleet I. F. Kruzenshtern. Results and their discussion. The rules formulated by the admiral on the basis of personal experience, almost 200 years ago, remain relevant and today they form the basis of the requirements of the Naval Charter for the protection of the health of military sailors and constitute the essence of modern naval hygiene.

A description is provided of the crocodile remains that were found during an excavation carried out in 2019 at Qubbat al-Hawā (Aswan, Egypt). The material consists of five more or less complete bodies and five heads that were in varying states of preservation and completeness. The absence of resin, which was apparently not used during the preparation of the mummies, and the almost complete loss of linen bandages, due to insect damage, allowed a detailed morphological and osteometric description of the remains. Attention was focused on the general state of preservation of the crocodiles, the completeness of their skeletons and skulls, the presence of cut or other marks that could indicate the cause of death, and the processing of the carcasses. Moreover, the possible provenance of the crocodiles, the methods of capture and killing of the animals and their possible chronological attribution are discussed. It is concluded that the manner in which these specimens were prepared, as well as the variation observed in the type of ‘final product’, are unlike any other crocodile material described so far. The preparation method suggests a pre-Ptolemaic date for the deposit. The morphological and metrical features indicate that both Crocodylus niloticus and the recently resurrected species Crocodylus suchus are present among these individuals that range from 1.8 to 3.5 m in length.

When the imagination conjures up an image of an Egyptian mummy, it is normally one of a human body wrapped with undyed linen bandages. However, the reality was much more colourful, as shown by the set of red mummy shrouds and textile fragments from Pharaonic Egypt considered in this work. The textiles were subjected to scientific investigation with the main aim of shedding light on the sources of red colour and on the possible reasons for the different levels of colour fading. The red colourants were investigated using various non-invasive and micro-invasive approaches. The results pointed towards the presence of three sources of red colour, which, in increasing order of lightfastness, are safflower (Carthamus tinctorius), madder (Rubia spp.), and red ochre. Micro-morphological observations and elemental analyses also enabled some hypotheses to be formulated regarding the application of these colourants to the textiles. The results not only deepen our knowledge of dyeing technologies in ancient Egypt and shed new light on the function of red shrouds and textiles as part of the funerary practices of Pharaonic Egypt, but are also essential in planning the display and future preservation of these mummies and their associated textiles.

The SuperPATH approach is a direct superior portal-assisted approach for total hip arthroplasty (THA) that utilizes the interval between the gluteus minimus and the piriformis to access the hip capsule. Patients and Methods: SuperPATH arthroplasty was performed by a single surgeon between December of 2016 and December of 2021 in 344 cases. The technique described by Chow was performed in all cases. The average length of stay was 1.3 days, and all patients were discharged for home. All patients were mobilized on the day of the operation. Six cases presented complications: four intraoperative femur fractures and two peroneal nerve palsies. No infection and no hip dislocation were noticed in any case. Modifications: We recommend that the patient be placed as far from the surgeon as possible as well as the use of a sterilized standard linen pack to elevate the foot and internally rotate the hip. In addition, regarding instrumentation, we recommend the use of a 4.5 mm drill for the first guidance femur drilling and a standard corkscrew for femoral head removal. Finally, we propose a different reduction technique using a hook. The use of the SuperPATH approach allows for maximal tissue sparing through preservation of external rotators and minimizing stretching of the gluteus medius. There is no range of motion restrictions postoperatively and patients can achieve a high level of function with a very low dislocation risk and reduced inpatient stay. Furthermore, an incision extension is possible if needed in complex cases. For surgeons familiar with the standard posterolateral approach, the SuperPATH approach is a reliable and safe method with promising results for the patient. In order to improve the surgical effect and facilitate some steps in the procedure, we share our experience and recommend some modifications.

Rancho La Brea (California, USA) is the most emblematic Quaternary fossiliferous locality in the world, since both the high number and diversity of the specimens recovered and their excellent preservational quality. In the last decades, paleobiological and paleoecological knowledge of the different groups of mammals from this site has increased notably; however, some aspects have not yet been inquired or there is little information. In this work we provide information on one of the most abundant mammals of this site, the equid Equus occidentalis, based on the study, from osteohistological and histotaphonomic perspectives, of thin sections of different limb bones. On the one hand, from an osteohistological viewpoint, we observe that the distribution and characterization of bone tissues in the different skeletal elements are, in general lines, similar to that mentioned for other extant and extinct equids. Cyclical growth marks allowed us to propose preliminary skeletochronological interpretations. On the other hand, from a taphonomic viewpoint, we note that all the samples reflect an excellent preservation of the bone microstructure, slightly altered by different pre- and post-burial processes. The variations recorded evidence different taphonomic history and preservation conditions among pits. This is the first study including fossil material from Rancho La Brea exclusively based on the analysis of the bone microstructure features.

Branched cable communications are carriers of fire load, they are tracks along which fire spreads in buildings and structures. Therefore, currently, fire safety of cables is one of the most important tasks of the cable industry. The spread of flames in vertical bunch wiring depends on the following factors: the amount of combustible material that is exposed to high temperatures, geometric shapes of cables and their mutual location when laying, the ignition temperature of gases emitted by cables, the volume of combustible gases emitted by cables at a certain elevated temperature, the room capacity and volume of air passing through the cable structure, cable devices. Analysis of regulatory documents revealed some key differences in the methodology of standards. It was found that the spread of fire is not only affected by the volume of laid cables, but also by their mutual placement in space. A direct correlation was found between the influence of the crosssection of the cable core and preservation of the cable line in case of fire. Parameters were determined for the preservation of serviceability under fire exposure in the case of bunch and in the case of single wiring. It has been determined that it is impossible to spread the results of fire tests in case of single wiring in accordance with GOST IEC 60331-21-2011 and in case of bunch wiring in accordance with GOST IEC 60332-3-22-2011 to the results of tests in accordance with GOST R 53316-2009 for the preservation of operability of cable lines. The parameters of fire resistance and operability of cable products under the influence of flame depending on the type of cables and the method of their installation have been determined.

This article discusses Möbius transformation from the point of view of algebra to describe one of its geometric properties, i.e. preserving circles and lines in complex planes. In simple terms, this preservation means that Möbius transformation maps a collection of circles and lines (back) into a collection of circles and lines. In general, the discussion begins with an explanation of the definition of the Möbius transformation in the complex plane. The discussion continues on defining the basic mapping and direct affine transformation. These two concepts are used to prove the existence of the preservation properties of circles and lines in the Möbius transformation. It can be shown that the Möbius transformation can be expressed as a composition of the direct affine transform and the inverse. It can also be shown that the direct affine transform and the inverse both have the property of preserving circles and lines in the complex plane. Thus, it can be concluded that in this study the Möbius transformation has the property of preserving circles and lines in the complex plane.

AbstractThe multiplication of scientific articles related to the fast-growing interest in preservation rhinoplasty (PR) may lead to confusion in the decision-making process, thus requiring a need for guidelines through a focus on benefit–risk ratio and revisions. This study analyzes a 352 consecutive primary rhinoplasties series during a 3 year (2016 to 2019) period with 1-year follow-up. The evaluation of the most appropriate procedure to the patient's nasal anatomy and expectations requires to correlate (1) a convenient classification of nasal profile lines; (2) a review of the dorsum preservation techniques (DP) classified as: full DP, DP + resurfacing, bony cartilaginous disarticulation, and finally traditional rhinoplasty; (3) the role of septoplasties, subdividing this series in two main groups; (4) analyzing the revisions in the different subgroups and to the literature. Thirty-five revisions (9.94%) were done. Correlations between profile lines, surgical procedures, and revisions show (1) 129 straight noses underwent full DP in 88 cases with 5.68% revisions; however, DP+ hump resurfacing in 32 patients with no revision. (2) Among 71 tension noses, 33 underwent full DP with 6 revisions (18.18%), while 32 patients had bony cap resurfacing, 1 revision (3.13%). (3) Among 109 kyphotic noses, 64 patients underwent DP + resurfacing with 10 revisions (15.63%); 27 patients had cartilage-only DP with two revisions (7.41%). (4) In the 43 difficult noses group, revisions were done equally in DP + resurfacing and cartilage-only subgroups. Septum stability modifies the correlations, introducing Cottle's septorhinoplasty in the paradigm. The revision rate is jumping ×2.50% when a septoplasty is associated with the rhinoplasty. Correlated to the benefit–risk ratio and the revisions, the following guidelines may be suggested in primary rhinoplasty: (1) Straight noses: full DP, (2) tension noses: DP + dorsum resurfacing and/or Cottle's variations, (3) kyphotic noses: cartilage-only DP, and (4) difficult noses: traditional rhinoplasties.

Four independent lines of evidence, (1) the quality of specimen preservation, (2) taxonomic collection curves, (3) molecular divergence estimates, and (4) ghost lineage analysis of a genus-level cladogram, point to echinoids having a much poorer fossil record in the Triassic than in the Lower Jurassic. Furthermore, preservational differences between Triassic and Lower Jurassic echinoids have remained a consistent feature over 160 years of discovery. Differences exist in how effectively paleontologists have collected the fauna from available outcrops in the Triassic and Lower Jurassic. Collection curves suggest that rocks have been more efficiently searched for their fossils in Europe than elsewhere in the world, and that Lower Jurassic faunas are better sampled from available outcrop than Triassic faunas. The discovery of Triassic taxa has quickened in pace over the past 4 decades (though largely driven by a single Lagerstätte—the St. Cassian beds) while discoveries of new taxa from the Lower Jurassic have slowed. Molecular analysis of extant families and ghost lineage analysis of Triassic and Lower Jurassic genera both point to poorer sampling of Triassic faunas. This difference in the quality of the fossil record may be partially explained by differences in rock outcrop area, as marine sedimentary rocks are much less common in the Triassic than in the Lower Jurassic. However, improving biomechanical design of the echinoid test over this critical time interval was probably as important, and better explains observed preservational trends. Changes in the quality of the echinoid fossil record were thus driven as much by intrinsic biological factors as by sampling patterns.

Based on a case study on Miami Beach’s acclaimed iconic art deco architectural district, this article critically dovetails intersecting hegemonic spaces of preservation, memorial practices and social and sexual identities. It argues how commemorative narratives are selectively encrypted in the local urban environment and its artefacts deemed of historical significance. It especially reveals the tensions arising between art deco (i.e. architectural) preservation and gay (i.e. social) urban preservation, as well as its under-studied largely entrepreneurial nature and attraction for a mainstream, cosmopolitan class under neoliberalism. Drawing from extensive archival, policy, observational, participatory and interview data over 2013–2015, the article revisits in historical perspective how the art deco area, incarnated in the 1920s, developed across class-, ethnicity-, religion- and age-inflected social fragmentations and how this legacy, from the late-1970s onward, segued into the local gay-led preservation movement and select commemorations of the art deco scene. To this background, the study employs the tenet of ‘queerying’ to address the under-researched coalescing frictions in preservation between perceived authentic and engineered trajectories of (gay) place (re)makings alongside reminiscences selected over others. The findings uncover and challenge (un)intentional ‘(un)rememberings’ of the local early history and the recent past, where socially fragmented fault lines and the more recent gay-led preservation track remain overly homogeneously imprinted in dominant preservation communications and performance.

Five specimens of the priapulid Maotianshania cylindrica preserved inside their lined burrows were described from the Lower Cambrian Chengjiang deposits near Kunming, southern China. The exceptional preservation suggests that this worm made a dwelling tube by lining within the uppermost sediment layers. This seems to be unique among priapulids in comparison with the Cambrian Selkirkia and Paraselkirkia, as well as some modern priapulid larvae and loriciferans. Taphonomic evidence indicates that the burrow-and-worm specimens are not buried in situ but were moved by storm, tsunami, or turbidity generated currents that are thought to have brought sedimentary material intermittently.

The second part of the article deals with the issues of tracing and dating the external line of the fortifications of the city of Bolgar, which existed in pre-Mongol times. The task of this line was to defend the territory adjacent to the citadel and inhabited by craftsmen and tradesmen. Until now, it was assumed that there was only one such line. However, excavation materials indicate several lines (at least two). The problem is aggravated by very approximate dating of the ditches discovered during excavations and the absence (or extremely low degree of preservation) of embankments, which are no longer visible in the relief. Lack of reliable information about the fortification of the Bolgar at the beginning of the 13thcentury casts doubt on the catastrophic destruction of the city by the Mongols in 1236.

Schematizing railway networks for better readability is often achieved by aligning railway lines along the octilinear directions. However, such railway map layouts require further adjustment when placing station name labels. In this article, the authors present a novel approach to automating the placement of station names around the railway network while maximally respecting its original layout as the mental map. The key idea is to progressively annotate stations from congested central downtown areas to sparse rural areas. This is accomplished by introducing the sum of geodesic distances over the railway network to properly order the stations to be annotated first, and then elongating the line segments of the railway network while retaining their directions to spare enough labeling space around each station. Additional constraints are also introduced to restrict the aspect ratios of the region confined by the railway network for better preservation of the mental map.

Purpose This work aims to provide a report on adopting a consortial model of collaboration toward understanding digital preservation practice. Design/methodology/approach This work provides a case study detailing the work and outcomes of a digital preservation pilot project undertaken by the Five College Libraries between 2014 and 2015. Findings Digital preservation is a broad endeavor and rapidly developing facet of digital collections and institutional repositories; yet, it is often an area that is not fully understood or implemented by many libraries and archives, largely because institutions lack the necessary resources to do it alone. Working across institutional lines provides a possible solution to overcoming resource limitations and general challenges for pursuing robust digital preservation programs. Research limitations/implications Findings reported in this work are based on a limited-scope pilot project. Several questions laid out during the pilot remain unanswered at its close. Originality/value This paper provides insight into an experimental process rarely reported in library and information science literature. The goal of the paper is to provide a reference point for institutions pursuing a consortial approach to the challenges of applied digital preservation practice.

Abstract. Although the depth of bioturbation can be estimated on the basis of ichnofabric, the timescale of sediment mixing (reworking) and irrigation (ventilation) by burrowers that affects carbonate preservation and biogeochemical cycles is difficult to estimate in the stratigraphic record. However, pyrite linings on the interior of shells can be a signature of slow and shallow irrigation. They indicate that shells of molluscs initially inhabiting oxic sediment pockets were immediately and permanently sequestered in reduced, iron-rich microenvironments within the mixed layer. Molluscan biomass-stimulated sulfate reduction and pyrite precipitation was confined to the location of decay under such conditions. A high abundance of pyrite-lined shells in the stratigraphic record can thus be diagnostic of limited exposure of organic tissues to O2 even when the seafloor is inhabited by abundant infauna disrupting and age-homogenizing sedimentary fabric as in the present-day northern Adriatic Sea. Here, we reconstruct this sequestration pathway characterized by slow irrigation (1) by assessing preservation and postmortem ages of pyrite-lined shells of the shallow-infaunal and hypoxia-tolerant bivalve Varicorbula gibba in sediment cores and (2) by evaluating whether an independently documented decline in the depth of mixing, driven by high frequency of seasonal hypoxia during the 20th century, affected the frequency of pyrite-lined shells in the stratigraphic record of the northern Adriatic Sea. First, at prodelta sites with a high sedimentation rate, linings of pyrite framboids form rapidly in the upper 5–10 cm as they already appear in the interiors of shells younger than 10 years and occur preferentially in well-preserved and articulated shells with periostracum. Second, increments deposited in the early 20th century contain < 20 % of shells lined with pyrite at the Po prodelta and 30 %–40 % at the Isonzo prodelta, whereas the late 20th century increments possess 50 %–80 % of shells lined with pyrite at both locations. At sites with slow sedimentation rate, the frequency of pyrite linings is low (< 10 %–20 %). Surface sediments remained well mixed by deposit and detritus feeders even in the late 20th century, thus maintaining the suboxic zone with dissolved iron. The upcore increase in the frequency of pyrite-lined shells thus indicates that the oxycline depth was reduced and bioirrigation rates declined during the 20th century. We hypothesize that the permanent preservation of pyrite linings within the shells of V. gibba in the subsurface stratigraphic record was enabled by slow recovery of infaunal communities from seasonal hypoxic events, leading to the dominance of surficial sediment modifiers with low irrigation potential. The presence of very young and well-preserved pyrite-lined valves in the uppermost zones of the mixed layer indicates that rapid obrution by episodic sediment deposition is not needed for preservation of pyrite linings when sediment irrigation is transient and background sedimentation rates are not low (here, exceeding ∼ 0.1 cm yr−1) and infaunal organisms die at their living position within the sediment. Abundance of well-preserved shells lined by pyrite exceeding ∼ 10 % per assemblage in apparently well-mixed sediments in the deep-time stratigraphic record can be an indicator of inefficient bioirrigation. Fine-grained prodelta sediments in the northern Adriatic Sea deposited since the mid-20th century, with high preservation potential of reduced microenvironments formed within a mixed layer, can represent taphonomic and early diagenetic analogues of deep-time skeletal assemblages with pyrite linings.

This is a review paper illustrating how the heat process FT-value for low-acid canned foods can be estimated using measured values of the numbers and resistance of the spoilage organisms and an appropriate model. Heat process FT-values are calculated using the straight-line semilogarithmic model for preservation against public health, mesophilic spore economic and thermophilic spore economic spoilage. The microbiological characteristics of each type of preservation hazard are reviewed. Several appropriate values of DT and N0 are used in the illustration calculations of FT. The presentation is summarized graphically by placing the FT-value lines calculated using the model for preservation against public health, mesophilic spore and thermophilic spore hazards all on the same graph. This gives a visual picture of the relative magnitude of the FT-value for the different types of spoilage hazard.

The characteristics and problems of coastal water areas and coastal territories are considered. The use of coastal areas for economic, residential, and industrial buildings led to their degradation and gave rise to a number of legal, ecological, technical, and urban planning problems. Coastal water areas and territories are important natural and urban planning complexes in the planning structure of the city, because they enrich the urban fabric with public and recreational space, coastal flora and fauna, a picturesque landscape, and improve the microclimate of the urban environment. Professional organization, beautification, preservation and protection of coastal water areas and their coastal territories is one of the dominant urban planning tasks due to the fact that coastal territories are extremely vulnerable, the most exploited and investment-attractive zones. Preservation of the natural balance between the water area and the coastal area in the conditions of an urbanized environment is an urgent task of city planners. The advantages of the organization of the coastal man-made system have been proven. The urban planning organization of the coastal territory of the river is a set of measures for engineering preparation and improvement of the territory, which include the definition and measurements of the site, the identification of its natural features, the determination of the borders of the coastal territory, zoning with the definition of restrictions (water protection zone, coastal protective strip, green lines), project development, technical support of architectural and landscape improvement under the condition of maintaining and preserving the natural balance of the river ecosystem. The importance of establishing the Blue Lines of urban planning restrictions of coastal water areas is substantiated. Green and Blue lines should become tools for limiting the urbanized load on the natural component of cities and settlements, protecting and safeguarding the purity of the water body, the balance of the ecotone component, the river biocenosis, and the paradynamic connections of the river ecosystem during its urban development. The blue lines of urban planning restrictions – the boundaries of the water area cut – will contribute to the preservation of the maximum allowable sizes of coastal water areas, a tool for preserving the natural component in the urbanized environment, which will help solve the problem of balanced, rational and harmonious use of coastal water areas and territories. In addition to the obvious advantages of improving the microclimate of the urban environment, the appearance of recreational and pedestrian zones, the organization of public space (city friendly for people), the return of historical and cultural significance, professional urban planning organization and the revitalization of river ecosystems will have long-term economic profit – the coastal areas of revived water areas will become promising objects for investments.

Agrobacterium rhizogenes-transformed hairy roots from Catharanthus roseus have been widely used in research and in life. Consequently, methods for preservation are essential to maintain valuable hairy root lines. Our results showed that Gamborg’B5 was the most suitable medium for hairy roots from VIN002 and VIN005 while solid White media was more comfortable for the hairy lines from VIN022 and VIN077. All hairy root lines must be preserved in the dark at 25–27 oC. Under suitable conditions, the rate of lines growing normally reached 69.3, 67.0, 57.3 and 60.7 % for VIN002, VIN005, VIN072, and VIN077, respectively. There were 90.0, 93.3, 80.0 and 93.3 % of lines could preserve rolB, a gene which has important effect on the growth of hairy roots.

Purpose – The primary purpose of this paper was to assess the status of digital heritage preservation management in Eastern Africa. The following research objectives were addressed: investigate digital heritage preservation management in Eastern Africa, find out the content which is prioritized for digital preservation, describe the challenges of digital heritage preservation management in Eastern Africa and propose a framework to address challenges of digital heritage preservation in Eastern Africa. Design/methodology/approach – This paper is based on a literature review and an analysis of national digitization efforts in Eastern Africa. The research objectives were addressed using Document Lifecycle and World Summit on Information Society Action Lines 2, 3 and 8 as the theoretical frames. Findings – Results revealed growing awareness among institutions with statutory responsibility for heritage management about digital heritage preservation in Eastern Africa through the support of international agencies, civil societies and governments. However, institutions with responsibility for heritage management were ill-equipped to function in this role effectively. Content of academic, commercial, parliamentary and judicial and international treaties’ values were the preferred candidates for digitization. The findings revealed several challenges hampering digital heritage preservation management: weak policy and regulatory frameworks, limited capacity, inadequate government support and limited connectivity and bandwidth. Originality/value – Many countries in Eastern Africa are making efforts to preserve their national heritage through digitalization to bridge the content divide between the region and the developed world so as to enhance access by its people, not only to their respective national heritages but also for international information systems knowledge. However, most of these efforts remain undocumented, making it difficult to make comparisons with similar best practices around the world.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Schematic (network) maps are helpful for people to perform route planning and orientation tasks. The London Underground Map designed by Harry Beck is an excellent example of such maps. Generally, there are three approaches to generate schematic maps: manual, semi-automated (or computer-aided) and fully automated. In the past twenty years, many researchers have been devoted to the development of automated methods for generation of schematic maps. In these automated methods, various sets of constraints are used. Most of these constraints are for geometric properties of individual features (such as the lengths and orientations of lines); a few constraints are for relations between features (such as the minimum distance threshold between non-incident edges); but none are explicitly for the main structures of whole networks. It is believed that preservation of the main structure is the most important, because main structure is represented by global features which is first recognized by a pre-attentive process in human cognition – a global-to-local process (in which local features are then recognized by an attentive process). It is hypothesized here that an automated method with the preservation of main structures of networks should be able to generate schematic maps with improved clarity and aesthetics.</p><p>This paper describes the development of an automated method with the preservation of the main structures of line networks. In this method, automated schematization is treated as an optimization problem and is represented as a Mixed-Integer Programming (MIP) model, which consists of an objective function and a set of constraints. The preservation of main structures is modelled into constraints (i.e., making important lines straight and orientating them to specific directions) for the model. The MIP model is imported into a commercial optimization software called “IBM ILOG CPLEX Optimization Studio” (version 12.6.3) for the acquisition of optimal solutions (i.e., coordinates of vertices and edges on schematic maps). The whole process is shown in Figure 1.</p><p>Experimental evaluations have been conducted with a set of real-life data as shown in Figure 2a and 2d. Schematic maps are generated by this new method with the preservation of main structures and by an old method without the particular consideration for main structures, as shown in Figures 2b, 2c, 2e and 2f. A psychological test with a questionnaire has been conducted, which consists of questions regarding “clarity”, “recognition of major lines”, “visual simplicity” and “satisfaction”. It is found that, in all these four aspects, the map generated by new methods with preservation of main structures have higher scores than those by the old method. These improvements are proved to be significant after paired-t tests.</p><p>Therefore, it is concluded that the new automated method with the preservation of main structures can generate schematic maps with significant improvement in clarity and aesthetics. This study is helpful to improve automated methods for generation of schematic maps and other visual representations.</p>

Vero cells have been derived from the kidney of African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) as mammalian continuous cell lines for biological research. Continuous culturing of Vero cells as well as maintenance of frozen stock is important for future use. Dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and glycerol are two common cryoprotectants used widely to maintain frozen cell lines. DMSO, as a cryoprotectant in cryopreservation procedures, is detrimental to cells. A study was carried out to compare the effect of DMSO and glycerol as cryoprotectants on Vero cells. Vero cells were cultured and maintained using same nutrients and environment, following the modified protocol of Ammerman et al. (2008). After total cell counting the Vero cells were preserved in Cryocane at liquid nitrogen temperature (-196ºC). Two frozen stocks were made simultaneously from the cell suspensions of same concentrations using DMSO and glycerol. After one year of preservation post-thawed cell viability with glycerol was higher than with DMSO. Pulpotomy therapy for the primary dentition has developed along three lines: devitalization, preservation, and regeneration. Devitalization (mummification, cauterization) where the intent is to destroy vital tissue, is typified by formocresol and electrocautery. Preservation (minimal devitalization, noninductive), the retention of maximum vital tissue with no induction of reparative dentin, is exemplified by glutaraldehyde and ferric sulfate treatment. Regeneration (inductive, reparative), the stimulation of a dentin bridge, has long been associated with calcium hydroxide. Of the three categories, regeneration is expected to develop the most rapidly in the coming years. Advances in the field of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) have opened new vistas in pulp therapy. Human BMPs with dentinogenic properties are becoming available.

Abstract C3H/HeJ mice carry a mutant allele (Lpsd) of a recently identified gene whose normal allele (Lpsn) confers responsiveness to bacterial LPS in C3H/HeN and most other mouse strains. Recently we reported a differential display analysis of matched macrophage-derived cell lines from C3H/HeJ and C3H/HeN mice under LPS-free conditions. Of the ∼12,000 transcripts evaluated, 4 were differentially expressed. One transcript represented secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor. In this study, we report another differentially expressed transcript, mouse matrix metalloprotease-9 (MMP-9). Like secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor, MMP-9 was expressed constitutively in the Lpsd macrophage cell line and not in the Lpsn cell line. Similarly, two additional macrophage cell lines that respond readily to LPS by producing nitric oxide and TNF expressed no MMP-9 under LPS-free conditions. However, in all four cell lines, LPS induced MMP-9 or augmented its expression. In primary macrophages, concentrations of LPS in the ng/ml range augmented the expression of MMP-9 mRNA. Paradoxically, macrophages from Lpsd mice expressed more MMP-9 transcripts than macrophages from Lpsn mice. In contrast, the induction of TNF in response to LPS was much more pronounced in Lpsn macrophages. The present findings with MMP-9 suggest that homozygosity at Lpsd does not so much prevent a response to LPS as dysregulate it, resulting in the suppression of some LPS signaling pathways and the preservation of others.

Abstract Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) have become ubiquitous in the current management of chronic inpatient and outpatient conditions. Many hospitals have developed practice patterns that allow placement of PICC lines by teams of nurses at the bedside. This practice has led to a proliferation of these central venous access devices, and their use has expanded. One of the consequences of a nurse-based placement team is the decrease in physician involvement in decisions regarding the placement of PICC lines. In some settings, PICC placement can become so routine that the type of access needed or the other clinical conditions affecting an individual patient may be overlooked. One example of this problem is the situation in which a patient with chronic kidney disease or end-stage renal disease needs venous access for a nondialysis reason, such as antibiotics, cancer therapy, or total parenteral nutrition. The author discusses ramifications of this problem as well as ways to reduce the chances of mistakes.

AbstractThe 2012 congressional redistricting was the first for which census data and mapmaking software were available to and easily useable by undergraduate students. We discuss our experience teaching the redistricting process to undergraduates and having our students draw constitutionally and statutorily valid congressional districts for Massachusetts. Bringing students into the process is a valuable teaching tool, and it also provides unbiased redistricting scenarios to state legislators and makes the redistricting process more open and transparent. Perhaps contrary to the fears of some legislators, our students placed substantial value on incumbency and the preservation of existing district lines, along with a respect for the traditional redistricting concerns of communities of interest and compactness.

Despite numerous efforts aiming to characterise glioblastoma pathology (GBM) and discover new therapeutic strategies, GBM remains one of the most challenging tumours to treat. Here we propose the optimisation of in vitro culturing of GBM patient-derived cells, namely the establishment of GBM-derived cultures and their maintenance at oxygen tension mimicking oxygenation conditions occurring within the tumour. To globally analyse cell states, we performed the transcriptome analysis of GBM patient-derived cells kept as spheroids in serum-free conditions at the reduced oxygen tension (5% O2), cells cultured at atmospheric oxygen (20% O2), and parental tumour. Immune cells present in the tumour were depleted, resulting in the decreased expression of the immune system and inflammation-related genes. The expression of genes promoting cell proliferation and DNA repair was higher in GBM cell cultures when compared to the relevant tumour sample. However, lowering oxygen tension to 5% did not affect the proliferation rate and expression of cell cycle and DNA repair genes in GBM cell cultures. Culturing GBM cells at 5% oxygen was sufficient to increase the expression of specific stemness markers, particularly the PROM1 gene, without affecting neural cell differentiation markers. GBM spheroids cultured at 5% oxygen expressed higher levels of hypoxia-inducible genes, including those encoding glycolytic enzymes and pro-angiogenic factors. The genes up-regulated in cells cultured at 5% oxygen had higher expression in parental GBMs compared to that observed in 20% cell cultures, suggesting the preservation of the hypoxic component of GBM transcriptome at 5% oxygen and its loss in standard culture conditions. Evaluation of expression of those genes in The Cancer Genome Atlas dataset comprising samples of normal brain tissue, lower-grade gliomas and GBMs indicated the expression pattern of the indicated genes was specific for GBM. Moreover, GBM cells cultured at 5% oxygen were more resistant to temozolomide, the chemotherapeutic used in GBM therapy. The presented comparison of GBM cultures maintained at high and low oxygen tension together with analysis of tumour transcriptome indicates that lowering oxygen tension during cell culture may more allegedly reproduce tumour cell behaviour within GBM than standard culture conditions (e.g., atmospheric oxygen tension). Low oxygen culture conditions should be considered as a more appropriate model for further studies on glioblastoma pathology and therapy.
