The Life of Alexander Nevskii is written in two styles: a hagiographic style and a secular style. Scholarly views are divided over whether the Life was written by one person in two different styles or by two persons, either a hagiographic writer and secular editor or a secular writer and hagiographic editor. The present article hypothesizes that the Life was probably written initially in a secular style as a military tale (the “wolf”) in the second half of the thirteenth century. This military tale was the foundational layer for the subsequent writing of the Life. Some time later, probably in the second half of the fourteenth century (before 1377), an ecclesiastical redactor edited the text of the military tale adding phrases in a hagiographic style (the “sheep’s clothing”), thus creating a chronicle tale about the life of Alexander Nevskii. In the second half of the fifteenth century, a further editing took place as anti-Tatar interpolations were added, thus creating the First Redaction of the Life of Alexander Nevskii. Following a text critical analysis, this article reconstructs the First Redaction of the Life, in which the two styles are delineated. Then the article provides a translation into English of the hypothetical version of the non-extant military tale about Alexander Nevskii.

Abstract The evolutionary function of love is to create a strong bond between the partners with reproduction in view. In order to achieve this goal, humans use various sexual/reproductive strategies, which have evolved due to specific reproductive benefits. The use of particular strategies depends on many factors but one of the most important is early childhood experiences, on which life history theory (LHT) focuses. John Lee (1973) identified 6 basic love styles: eros, ludus, storge, pragma, agape, and mania. Our goal was to check whether love styles may be treated as sexual/reproductive strategies in the context of LHT - slow or fast strategy. In our study (N = 177) we found that people who prefer the slow reproductive strategy are inclined to show passionate, pragmatic and friendly love, and those who prefer the fast strategy, treated love as a game. A low level of environmental stress in childhood results in preferring eros, storge and agape love styles, belonging to the slow strategy, and a high one results in preferring ludus, which belongs to the fast strategy. People representing eros, storge or pragma styles have restricted sociosexual orientation so they prefer long-term relationships, whereas those with the ludus style are people with unrestricted orientation, preferring short-term relationships. Besides, storge, agape and pragma seem to determine preferring qualities connected with parental effort in one’s partner, mania - with mating effort, and eros - with both kinds of effort. No correlation was found between the love style and the number of children.

Abstract I draw together multimodal and creative art practices with sociological and discursive research frameworks to detail how multimodal interviewing facilitates communication of individual narratives. I offer a route for researching how embodied self-production emerges by asking: What can be learnt from analysing the context and process of narrative accounts rather than the content? Consideration is given to how a drawn visual line influences the narrative progress by inviting diverse, active and embodied engagement, while highlighting issues that participants prioritise. Attention is also given to how self-recognition and the production of identity become apparent in moments that punctuate a narrator’s story-telling. These moments are identified as discursive transitions and include switches in style or topic of conversation, expressions of emotion, pauses and extended silences. These transitions are conceptualised as examples of a ‘structuring presence’ within a narrative, and I explore how these are central to the embodied production of self-identity.

The article analyzes the conceptual paradigm of religious style as a kind of literary language in terms of the concept of an encyclopedic publication on Ukrainian stylistics. Particular attention is paid to the establishment of its differential features, functions, varieties (the language of Scripture, liturgical language, the language of preaching), categories (sacredness); coverage of the historiography of style in Ukrainian linguistics. The concept of religious style is systematized in the context of the typology of linguistic thinking, the establishment of a view of the history of literary language and its styles as phenomena closely related to the philosophy of culture, the development of national consciousness. The conceptual paradigm of religious style is based on hypero-hyponymic connections and provides substantiation of the status of concepts, establishment of their differential features and coverage of historiography of style in Ukrainian linguistics. The fundamental publication “Ukrainian Stylistics: Encyclopedia” should systematize the linguistic-stylistic terminological apparatus in the modern scientific paradigm, trace the connection of linguistic-stylistics with the theory and history of literary language. This work involves the interpretation of the category of style in the context of the typology of language thinking, the definition of its subordinate concepts, the establishment of a view of the history of literary language and its styles as phenomena closely related to philosophy of culture, development of national consciousness. The conceptual paradigm of religious style is based on hypero-hyponymic connections and provides substantiation of the status of concepts, establishment of their differential features and coverage of historiography of style in Ukrainian linguistics, which language our people refuse their daily prayers. Religious style is fully developed in all spheres of church life and unites various genres: Scripture, liturgical; Holy Father’s, life, preaching, scientific-theological, ecclesiasticallegal, educational-religious, pilgrimage, polemical, enriching the literary language with new sacred and valuable linguistic means.

This research study was performed in an attempt to fill an apparent void regarding the relative utility and comprehensiveness of three published, theoretically-based, idiographic, initial assessment inventories: Integral Intake (II), Life-Style Introductory Interview (LI), and Multimodal Life History Inventory (MI). “Experts” -- defined as professors of counseling or psychology and licensed practitioners who have been practicing as counselors or psychologists for at least five years - read through the inventories and then evaluated them by responding to both (qualitative) open-ended questions as well (quantitative) rankings and ratings. The researcher posed three primary research questions: 1) how do participants' evaluations differ regarding the overall helpfulness of the three inventories; 2) how do participants' evaluations differ regarding the comprehensiveness -- both relative to each of the eight dimensions of the client (thoughts, emotions, behaviors, physical aspects of the client, physical aspects of the client's environment, culture, spirituality, and what is most meaningful to the client) and overall -- of the three inventories; and 3) how do participants' evaluations differ regarding the efficiency with which the three inventories assessed the eight dimensions. Results indicated that participants consistently evaluated the II and MI as more helpful, comprehensive, and efficient than the LI - both overall and relative to the eight specific dimensions. The LI was consistently evaluated as the worst of the three inventories -- on all dimensions. The MI was evaluated as the best inventory on four dimensions: the client's thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and physical aspects. The II was evaluated as the best inventory on seven dimensions: physical aspects of the client's environment, client's culture, client's spirituality, what is most meaningful to the client, and, notably, on overall comprehensiveness, overall efficiency, and overall helpfulness. Another goal of this research was to obtain feedback from the participants relative to how to improve the II. This goal was also accomplished and the researcher will implement this feedback into subsequent versions of the Integral Intake.

Eak Tai Ahn is not only the first generation of Korean musicians, composers and conductors to have studied Western music and given successful musical performances in Western countries, but also is among the first to introduce the music of Korea to the West utilizing the Western music system. Korea Fantasy is an important work that helped Ahn win international acclaim. Korea Fantasy is an orchestral piece that evolved along with Ahn's unique life experiences shaped by the state of his native country. The piece is programmatic, depicting the history of Korea, which utilizes musical devices, such as rhythms and quotation that are distinctive musical elements of Korea. This document discusses the political and social history of Korea during Ahn's life time, offers an overview of Ahn's education and musical footsteps, and describes the premiere and reception of Korea Fantasy. Moreover, a discussion of his compositional traits and a musical analysis of Korea Fantasy are presented.

The art of reading and its application to knowledge acquisition and innovation by elites have been largely neglected by historians of print culture and reading in late imperial China (1368-1911). Unlike most studies, which are concerned more with the implied reader and individual reading experience, the present study assumes that the actual reader and the social, cultural and epistemic dimensions of reading practices are the central issues of a history of reading in China. That is, while the art of reading was internalized by the individual, his learning and application of it had social, cultural and epistemic features. At a time when secular reading practices in Renaissance England were informed by Erasmian principles, Ming literati, regardless of their different philosophical stances, were being trained in an art of reading proposed by Zhu Xi (1130-1200), whose Neo-Confucian philosophy had been esteemed as orthodox since the fourteenth century. Transformations and challenges in interpreting and applying his art did not hinder its general reception among elite readers. Its common employment determined the practitioner’s epistemic frame and manner of knowledge innovation. My dissertation consists of five chapters bracketed with an introduction and conclusion. Chapter One discusses Zhu’s theory of reading and the implied pattern of acquiring and innovating knowledge, based on a careful reading of his writings and conversations. Chapter Two describes the transmission of Zhu’s theory from the thirteenth to the seventeenth centuries. During its transmission, Zhu’s art was reedited, rephrased, and even readapted by both government agencies and individual authors with different intentions and agendas. Chapter Three focuses on the reception of Zhu’s theory of reading by 1500 and argues that the moral end of reading eventually triumphed over the intellectual one in early Ming Confucian philosophy. Chapter Four explores the affinity of Ming philosophers of mind with Zhu’s theory in their reading concepts and practices from 1500 to the mid-seventeenth century. Despite their attempts to separate themselves intellectually from the Song tradition, Ming philosophers of mind followed Zhu’s rules for reading in their intellectual practices. Chapter Five outlines the reading habits and knowledge landscape based on a statistical survey of extant Ming imprints. Despite some deviations, the Ming reading habits and knowledge framework largely accorded with Zhu’s theory and its Ming adaptations. The continuity of reading habits from Zhu’s time to the seventeenth century, I conclude, inspires us to rethink the Ming apostasy from the Song tradition. The particularity of scholarly knowledge acquisition and innovation in Ming-Qing China by the eighteenth century was not invented by Ming-Qing scholars but anticipated by Zhu through his theory of reading. With respect to late imperial China, the history of reading, together with the history of knowledge, is yet to be fruitfully explored. With this dissertation, I hope to be able to make a contribution to the understanding of the East Asian orthodox habit of reading as represented by Zhu’s admirers. By placing my investigation in the context of the history of knowledge, I also hope to contribute to the understanding of the relationship of reading to the way that knowledge evolved in traditional China. Intellectual historians tended to consider the Ming Confucian tradition as having broken off from the Cheng-Zhu tradition, but at least in reading habits and practices Ming elite readers perpetuated Zhu’s theory of reading and the knowledge framework it implied.

In this thesis I ask whether food can be used to express Catalan national identity, and if so, in what ways this occurs. In doing so, I consider the lived realities of nationalist movements, rather than simply the ideas and political claims that inform such movements. The Catalan Autonomous Community in northeast Spain is an ideal place to research this issue, due to the strengthening of nationalist sentiments there in light of the rise in support for independence from Spain. I wished to see whether this had any effect on the connections between food and national identity (or gastronationalism). National identity and food are connected in many diverse and varied ways. Food culture allows us to reflect on national identity as a whole. Themes which commonly appear in nationalist discourse, such as cultural specificity, historicism, or landscape (to name but a few), also inform discussions of national food identity. In the present case, while other markers of identity (e.g. language) are also important, ideals of Catalan nationalism may take the guise of Catalan gastronationalism as well. The current pro-independence movement has had the effect of making Catalans more aware of their cultural symbols, including cuisine, which is now one of many such symbols that can be mobilized for the expression of national identity.

Abstract

This paper is about the philosophies created by Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) and Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900). The purpose is to show the high degree of similarities between Thoreau’s and Nietzsche’s philosphy.

At first glance, it seems far-fetched to suggest an affinity between them; the differences in style and choice of subjects, have most certainly contributed to the fact that very few comparisons so far have been made. There is no evidence that one experienced any influence over the other, neither writer seems to have been aware of the other. Also their different areas of use during the 20th century, may have influenced the almost total lack of search for affinity. Thoreau’s philosphy has often been used by environmentalist movements, while Nietzsche has been connected to a wide range of various strivings, such as totalitarian regimes, individualistic artists and post-modern thinkers.

But if one disregard these facts, look beyond the differences, and break down their texts in search for their most fundamental opinions, one will see that Nietzsche and Thoreau shared a number of concerns. They were both ciritical to many aspects of the modern civilisation, espacially the way of life it encouraged. It was a life style, deep rooted in an obstructive tradition, that did not take the very essential conditions of life into consideration. This was both Thoreau’s and Nietzsche’s opinion, and their philosophies represent a willingness to re-establish a way of life that ignores all traditions hostile to life.

Both of them criticize the religion and its moral of work, the modern science, and many institutions of the modern society – the schools and the prisons for example. But they also praise things, things they claim to have a value in contrast to the modern way of life – the simple things. Both Thoreau and Nietzsche praise the solitude life style, the silent walking in the wilderness, the simple but healthy food, as well as some intellectual stimulus, especially good litterature and music. All these simple things contribute to Thoreau’s and Nietzsche’s opinion of life; it should be looked upon with the eyes of a child. Life should be like a play.

The title of this paper is Philosphers of the Rooster and the Morning. The title suggests the similarities I have found between Thoreau’s and Nietzsche’s philosophies. They both announce an awakening. For them, a new morning has broken, and this paper shows the similar circumstances they give credit for their awakening.

In the early days of the twentieth century when vaudeville was the most popular theatrical entertainment in America, there were a number of female singers who became its star performers. In the process of conducting preliminary research for a dissertation topic on female singers of this era, it quickly became evident that while much has been written about opera singers of that era, only limited material was available on female vaudeville singers. Furthermore, the small amount of information which was available was so randomly scattered among various sources that it was difficult to perceive a composite picture of these performers. The purpose of this investigation into the musical styles and repertoire of three great female singer-comediennes of early vaudeville--Eva Tanguay, Nora Bayes and Sophie Tucker--is to determine what the reasons were for their tremendous popularity. Because vaudeville was the prime source of entertainment before the days of mass media, the American public was quick to make stars of many of its performers. This study seeks to ascertain what it was about thesewomen's particular musical styles, repertoire and personalities which made them so interesting and caused the public to make them vaudeville stars. Though there are certainly other female singers of this period which are also of interest:, these three were chosen because they were unique. This study is presented as a series of articles with separate chapters devoted to Eva Tanguay, Nora Bayes and Sophie Tucker as individuals. These chapters include biographical material, especially from books about vaudeville performers, and also explore critical reviews and other reports on their work from such sources as "Variety," "Theatre Magazine," and various newspaper accounts. Analysis of these sources on each individual within the chapters is included as well. The final chapter contains a summary of the research and a discussion of what conclusions were reached about the musical styles and repertoire of Eva Tanguay, Nora Bayes and Sophie Tucker as a result of this investigation. In addition to discovering the reasons for these performers' popularity and appeal, it is hoped that a viable by-product of this research has been to arouse renewed public interest in these three fascinating ladies of early vaudeville.

Seventeenth-century England witnessed profound historical, theological, and musical changes. A king was overthrown and executed; religion was practiced fervently and disputed hotly; and English musicians fell under the influence of the Italian stile nuovo. Many devotional songs were printed, among them those which reveal influences of this style. These English-texted sacred songs for one to three solo voices with continuo--not based upon a previously- composed hymn or psalm tune—are emphasized in this dissertation. Chapter One treats definitions, past neglect of the genre by scholars, and the problem of ambiguous terminology. Chapter Two is an examination of how religion and politics affected musical life, the hiatus from liturgical music from 1644 to 1660 causing composers to contribute to the flourishing of devotional music for home worship and recreation. Different modes of seventeenth-century devotional life are discussed in Chapter Three. Chapter Four provides documentation for use of devotional music, diaries and memoirs of the period revealing the use of several publications considered in this study. Baroque musical aesthetics applied to devotional song and its raising of the affections towards God are discussed in Chapter Five. Chapter Six traces the influence of Italian monody and sacred concerto on English devotional song. The earliest compositions by an Englishman working in the stile nuovo are Henry Lawes' 1638 hymn tunes with continuo. Collections of two- and three-voice compositions by Child, the Lawes brothers, Wilson, and Porter, published from 1639 to 1657, comprise Chapter Seven, as well as early devotional works of Locke. Chapter Eight treats Restoration devotional song-- compositions for one to three voices and continuo, mostly of a more secular and dramatic style than works discussed in earlier. The outstanding English Baroque composers--Locke, Humfrey, Blow, and Purcell--are represented, and the apex of this style is found in the latest seventeenth-century publication of devotional song, Henry Playford's Harmonia sacra, (1688, 1693).

The current contribution aims at describing some key aspects in Rocchi and Demonte’s graphic novel La Macchina Zero, published in 2021. This is Rocchi and Demonte’s third work narrating stories of Chinese migration to Italy, after Primavere e Autunni (2015) and Chinamen (2017). Differently from the first two graphic novels, La Macchina Zero gives back to collective memory a new glimpse on the history of Chinese in Italy, focusing on the role of Mario Tchou, a brilliant Sino-Italian electronic scientist, and his contribution both to the economic growth of the Olivetti enterprise and to the creation of one of the first new generation computers, ELEA 9003. The first part will highlight on the main events narrated in the graphic novel. After that, some specific considerations about the structure and style, semiotic aspects and communicative functions of La Macchina Zero will also be provided, also in comparison with the previous two works. The third paragraph will specifically focus on Mario Tchou, his life and his crucial contribution, as a transnational scientist, to the ascent of Olivetti worldwide.

Nowadays, as some buildings differ from the others, known as local or traditional architecture; creates proximity to the modern building systems, we are used to today are called, vernacular architecture. We also called the similar style of building design, architecture without architects or rural architecture. Modern architectural buildings have changed the way of life, have aimed to a better living condition. In the recent history, we have experienced disasters like earthquakes, flooding, tsunamis, landslides. The ruins have emerged health and safety regulation changes in the policies. The emergence of the health and safety in the building life as the prime aim, closeness to the environment degradation have created theoretical concepts of ecological building styles and how local traditions have answered the emergency. In this study, it is studied the differences between countries how the cultural practices juxtaposed or override the modern technologies.

. All people want happiness, but every person seeks ways to achieve happiness at his own discretion and determines for himself its content. Scientists always tried to derive a general, universal formula for happiness. It is important to emphasize that happiness means duration in time. Urbanism can be defined as a style or way of urban life. Cities can offer many hopes and expectations, but these hopes and expectations did not always become real because of different reasons. Therefore, those who have realized all the positive and negative aspects of urban life, developed their own strategy of behavior, managed to find their place in urban society, adapt to conditions and build optimistic plans for the future - can feel the happiness of urbanism. Translations of Byron’s works occupy a special place in the work of P. A. Kulish (1819– 1897). They can be divided into three parts: nine poems included in the poetry collection Borrowed kobza; Don Juan, first canto; Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. As far as we know, Kulish was the first to attempt to translate Byron’s last, unfinished poem into Ukrainian. He chose not the “learned” type of translation, but “rehash”, which allowed more free experimentation in the field of vocabulary and rhythm. The edition was published as a separate reprint in 1891. Kulish saw his task in providing a translation of Byron’s poem Don Juan to help the younger generation of Ukrainians as a kind of textbook of life, as a means of protecting oneself from spiritual passions, from human egoism. In addition, the translation of the poem was important for Kulish in terms of developing a lyrical narrative style, which he applied in his last poem Kulish in Hell. Byron developed his own style of narration and used a confidential tone in the poem, referring to the direct experience of the reader. Kulish’s translation into Ukrainian of such a complex and rich work in terms of vocabulary, intonation, and rhyme was a rather difficult experiment. This translation is important both for the study of the creativity of Kulish and the processes of formation of the Ukrainian literary language and Ukrainian poetry. Refs 10.

This paper considers architecture as the creator of interior atmosphere-environments capable of cultivating spaces conducive to maintaining life through the mediation of variable external stimuli, but equally as possible is the articulation of this potential towards the construction of spaces intent on occasioning death. Architecture conceived with this awareness requires a rethinking of parameters, moving beyond the visual modalities of geometry, composition, icon or style, to instead utilize various qualitative materials like temperature, light intensity, relative humidity, air composition, air pressure, auditory and olfactory stimuli. This understanding is what Reyner Banham has called an “environmentalist” approach. These two oppositional potentials of architecture’s capacity as a creator of atmosphere-environments are considered in this paper first through examining a brief history of the development and design of the greenhouse – beginning as temporary wood structures assembled around planted specimens, to the development of permanent structures incorporating heating and ventilating technologies, to the iconic 19th century greenhouses with their greater use of glass and cast iron structure. In juxtaposition to the greenhouse is an examination of the development and design of the gas chamber – first adopted in the U.S. by the state of Nevada in 1921 pursuant of a more humane method of execution, but later advanced by the Nazis during WWII for the mass execution of Jews, minority groups and political prisoners. The radical potential of these two opposing typologies of interior meteorological construction, although each originating from substantially different moments and circumstances of history, both technologically mediate the external environment towards the explicit creation of an interior atmosphere-environment intent on affecting inhabitants – how this potential is utilized as this paper describes is de¬pendent upon those in a place of power capable of enacting such effects on life.

This paper looks at the Sutro Baths (1894-96) in San Francisco as an early example of the interiorization of public space, as a pioneer “Fun Palace” and a stage of consumption. The Sutro Baths were an encapsulated microcosms, the delirious dream of an ambitious millionaire, engineer, and later major of San Francisco. Sutro, a German immigrant and entrepreneur managed to encapsulate the ocean inside a spectacular glass palace. The history of these baths is also a reflection of the problems of social inclusion and exclusion derived from the privatization of public space. Besides being the largest interior space for bathers in the world at the time, the Sutro Baths are considered to be the first water park: a strange amalgam of pools, burgers, a taxidermy collection, a wax museum and a winter garden aspiring to the hanging gardens of Babylon. The climatized atmosphere and the ocean were sheltered, altered, domesticated and commodified: “Always as balmy and summery as mid-June…Here’s is the spot to loaf in tropic comfort like a Fiji Islander. No nudist and practically no missionaries, but everything else is Number One Triple A Tropical Style!”1 Sutro inaugurated a new typology, the lineage of which portrays a history of attempts to construct autonomous spaces for immersion within altered physics that are internalized and that offer a new type of socio-natural form. Inside these hedonistic bubbles, public life is reduced to a collective leisure experience.

Architectural Education in the UK has drifted toward an esoteric preoccupation with style and artistic production and is ignoring important issues of society and urban change. Techniques of user participation and involvement of students in real life social problems is on the agenda in only a few schools of architecture. Yet in the real world more emphasis is being placed on tenants and resident participation in social housing programmes. The Community Technical Aid movement is going from strength to strength. However UK schools of architecture are not preparing students for work of this kind. In this paper it is argued that architectural history and theory is largely to blame for placing too much emphasis on precedent studies divorced from social and political context. Progressive movements in CIAM and radical social programmes are ignored in favour of pre-occupation with fashionable but content free stylisms.

In documents, we find data about the music schools that appeared in the first half of the 19th century, after Tudor Vladimirescu's Revolution, when the Romanian Lands experienced a period of national and cultural renaissance, while the history of culture marks the beginning of the modern era. With the opening of new educational institutions with a musical-artistic profile, the interest in studying the piano increases significantly, at the same time, the preoccupations for promoting the piano art were stimulated by foreign composers who, attracted by our ethnic music, capitalize on their creation. Towards the end of the last decade of the 19th century, the musical life in Bessarabia intensified, the buds of the national composition school appeared, which also brought the first works for the piano, made in the style and forms of Western schools and adapted to the local oral soundtrack, At the same time, there is a tendency to integrate the local musical art into the European artistic circuit.

The quality of life in the urban system is closely associated with environmental conditions. With the right use of design tools, it is possible to solve the environmental problems of youth through the impact of landscape design on human opinion. Such landscaping areas as territories of memorable historical places must be complied with the modern requirements of society to preserve historical memory. It is discussed in the article the issues of solving problems to improve the factors of the urban environment that have a positive impact on maintaining intergenerational ties. The relevance of the project "Living memory of the Great Victory: for the glory of life, unity and the future" is grounded on the beautification and landscape design of Armavir. It is described a new ecological landscape approach to the planting of greenery and improvement of memorial complexes, based on the creation of a natural, relatively sustainable ecosystem. It is described the concept of laying park sites, performing cognitive, patriotic, informational, and environmental functions. The proposed style of memorial park territories supports the general historical and local history orientation of the territory in the design and improvement of urban areas with minimal resources for planting red oaks, based on the independent cultivation of seedlings from acorns. Ecological and patriotic project is aimed at creating and maintaining a sustainable landscape structure.

This paper argues for a beyond sustainable approach to sub-urban living, rejecting the postwar Levitt style single-family home of the American Dream, to instead consider alternative futures founded on new ideas of community. It questions how architecture may engender lasting opportuni¬ties for resilient and eco-egalitarian approaches to sub-urban life, while simultaneously meeting the fundamental needs of its inhabitants. This beyond sustainable rewriting of the Dream suggests a less individualized, more collaborative, more inclusive notion of sub-urban living, questioning many typical arrangements of inside/outside, front/back, public/ private, production/consumption, individual/collective, etc., as seen in American sub-urban tract housing. It will utilize the concept of the productive landscape conceived as a cata-lyst for reconstituting the production of food, water, energy, recreation and social interactions. This approach is illustrated through the work of several third-year undergraduate design studios taught in recent years at the University of Cincinnati, School of Architecture which maintained similar beyond sustainable ambitions. The location for these tests has been Greenhills, OH, one of three “Greenbelt Towns” built as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal Resettlement Administration. While Greenhills was envisioned largely as a response to the question of urban and rural poverty, today, the expanded role of the car, neoliberal global commerce and the increased expectations of comfort and convenience of sub-urban life, alongside its aging, out¬dated and undersized existing housing stock, have resulted in its decline as a desirable sub-urban living destination. However, its original small-scale walkable planning, many tree lined gently curving streets and cul-de-sacs, central park green, and still intact greenbelt provide substantive com¬munity assets from which to consider a beyond sustainable model of sub-urban living, especially in a world undergoing radical change due to anthropogenic global warming, cli¬mate destabilization and ecological degradation for which the postwar Levitt style suburb has contributed greatly. In this way its specific history and current shortcomings make Greenhills a timely locale for testing alternative approaches to sub-urban living and indirectly the city.

The article examines the language of the russian-ukrainian war of the 21st century based on the materials of compressed media texts; the role of political narratives and psychological-emotional markers in the creation of new lexemes is clarified; the verbal expression of forecasts of ukrainian and foreign analysts regarding the course of hostilities on the territory of Ukraine is shown. Compressed media texts reflect the main meanings of the language of the russian-ukrainian war in relation to the surrounding world. First of all, the media vocabulary was supplemented with neologisms – aggressive and sad: “rashism”, “denazification”, “katsapstan”, “orks”, “rusnia”, “kremlins”, “parebrik”, “in the swamps”, “nuclear dictator”, “putinism”, “two hundred” and others. Numerals acquired new expressive and evaluative meanings: “200s” (dead), “300s” (wounded), “400s” (russian military personnel who filed reports for termination of the contract), “500s” (hopelessly drunk russian soldiers, alcoholics who are unable to perform combat tasks). The language of war intensified the slogans of the struggle for state independence and people’s freedom. The scope of the greeting “Glory to Ukraine! – Glory to Heroes!”. New official holidays have appeared in the history of Ukraine since 2014: “Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred” Day (February 20), “Ukrainian Volunteer Day” (March 14), “Defenders and Defenders of Ukraine Day” (October 14), “Volunteer Day” (5 December). As you know, the professional holiday of the military is the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine” (December 6). A special style is characteristic of media texts on military topics: “Iron Force of Ukraine” (Iron Force of Ukraine), “digitize the Army” (for effective simulation of military operations); “grain corridor” (export of Ukrainian grain to African and European countries); “don’t let Ukraine lose” (the position of the Allies at the first stage of the war), “Ukraine must win!” (the position of the Allies in the second stage of the war); “in the Russian-Ukrainian war, the thinking of the 19th century collided with the thinking of the 21st century”, “a politician is a person who understands time” (Grigori Yavlinskyy, Russian oppositionist); “aggressive neutrality” (about Turkey’s position); “in Russia”, “there, in the swamps” (in Russia), “weak, inadequate evil” (about Russia), “behind the fence”; “a great reset of the world order”; “technology of military creativity”; “they are not Russian and not Ukrainian, they are Soviet”, “people without mentality”, “in Ukraine and without Ukraine” (Vitaly Portnikov about a separate category of Russian-speaking citizens in Ukraine); “information bed of Ukraine” (about combat operations on the front line; “when a descendant asks me what I did in those terrifying moments, I will know what to answer. At the very least, I did not stand aside” (opinion of a Ukrainian fighter). Compressed in media texts is implemented in the headline, note, infographic, chronicle, digest, help, caption for photos, blitz poll, interview, short articles, caricature, visual text, commercial, etc. Researchers add “nominative-representative text (business card text, titles of sections, pages, names of presenters, etc.) to concise media texts for a functional and pragmatic purpose.” accent text (quote, key idea); text-navigator (content, news feed, indication of movement or time); chronotope”. A specific linguistic phenomenon known as “language compression” is widespread in media texts. Language compression is the art of minimization; attention is focused on the main, the most essential, everything secondary is filtered out. Compression uses words succinctly and sparingly to convey the meaning as much as possible. For example, the headline “Racism. What is the essence of the new ideology of the Russian occupiers?”. The note briefly explains the meaning of this concept and explains the difference from “nazism” and “fascism”. Key words: compressed media text, language compression, language of war, emotional markers, expressive neologisms, political journalism.
