This article focuses on bioengineering practices that is one of today’s most exciting and rapidly growing fields of engineering. The field of bioengineering was developed primarily in the latter half of the 20th century, although its roots can be traced back to the work of early scientists such as Galileo and Newton. Another characteristic of the 20th century was the Age of Specialization. We now have come to a point where creative contributions and major advances are made at the interface and the cross section of fields. Bioengineering provides a fantastic model for such an interface. Computational bioengineering is proceeding from the genetic level to the organic. The major advances in biology, such as the field of genomics, have created a tremendously fertile ground for discovery and application. Engineering methods and principles have a vast opportunity to make an impact. There is a need to develop experimentally based computational models and tools to address problems ranging from regulation of gene expression to subcellular and cellular interactions, to tissue and organ function. This is a field at the intersection of biotechnology and information technology.

This paper describes processes and subsequent conclusions after working collaboratively in the broad area of language learning. The inquiry process considered factors in the learning environment which might benefit the learners, with music and drawing in the classroom being trialled and discussed with teachers and adult migrant English learners in different contexts. The responses of some primary aged students with learning problems and their parents and/or teachers were also studied. The inquiry process indicated that the term 'environments' must be understood to include personal environment, involving the Life energy fields, considered here to be the physical field, and the field of thought and memory, as well as the cultural, family, educational and other significant environments, within the context of the evolving Australian society. The term the author has chosen to describe the interaction of these experiential fields with the will of the individual, is an etheric. Membership of, or exclusion from, an etheric, may be subtle but can be discerned when considering a migrant attempting to enter the Australian workforce or, any person trying to enter a new field of endeavour. Soccer accounts for a third of the Swedish sports movement with 3 503 fields of both natural and artificial turf. The European Union will make a decision in 2021 on how to handle the issue of rubber performance infill. This infill can be found in artificial turf fields and are used for performance properties. The problem with this infill is the microplastics that spreads into the nature which is considered as toxic. Because of this the EU have decided to either ban or provide mandatory rules to reduce the spread of rubber performance infill. The north and the majority of Sweden’s climate is not adapted for play of soccer on natural turf according to FIFA, and EU want to ban or provide mandatory rules for artificial turfs. This action from the EU can perturb the entire Swedish sports movement since soccer accounts for a third of that movement. This study was therefore created to show if artificial turf fields are as bad for the environment as rumours has said compared with the natural turfs. To investigate this, a life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed regarding the global warming potential (GWP) and embodied water consumption for three different field types: an artificial turf field with recycled SBR, an artificial turf field with cork and a natural turf field. The result visualised that a natural turf field had the highest embodied water consumption and the highest impact on the GWP of a ten-year life cycle while the artificial turf field with recycled SBR had the least embodied water consumption and the least impact on the GWP. The findings of this LCA were that Sweden for the moment is dependent on artificial turf and the rubber performance infill, since the material properties are the best adapted to their climate. Therefore, a ban would be a risk for the Swedish sports movement. It was also revealed that natural turf fields in Sweden consumes at least 50 % municipal drinking water when irrigate. The high GWP impact came from the production of fertilisers (NPK). This report has shown how artificial turf and natural turf can work together in an industrial symbiosis by making the artificial turf field constructed to collect rainwater and use that water to irrigate the natural turf with.

The relationship between Texas Baptists and slavery is studied with an emphasis on the official statements made about the institution in denominational sources combined with a statistical analysis of the extent of slaveholding among Baptists. A data list of over 5,000 names was pared to 1100 names of Baptists in Texas prior to 1865 and then cross-referenced on slaveownership through the use of federal censuses and county tax rolls. Although Texas Baptists participated economically in the slave system, they always maintained that blacks were children of God worthy of religious instruction and salvation. The result of these disparate views was a paradox between treating slaves as chattels while welcoming them into mixed congregations and allowing them some measure of activity within those bodies. Attitudes expressed by white Baptists during the antebellum period were continued into the post-war years as well. Meanwhile, African-American Baptists gradually withdrew from white dominated congregations, forming their own local, regional, and state organizations. In the end, whites had no choice but to accept the new-found status of the Freedmen, cooperating with black institutions on occasion. Major sources for this study include church, associational, and state Baptist minutes; county and denominational histories; and government documents. The four appendices list associations, churches, and counties with extant records. Finally, private accounts of former slaves provide valuable insight into the interaction between white and black Baptists.

In this thesis I cover the theoretical framework and the practice based implications of bringing the fundamental principles of a cybernetic art educational strategy, the Groundcourse, which was developed and taught during the 1960’s in England by Roy Ascott, into the virtual, three dimensional builder’s world of the metaverse; to be implemented there as a non-institutional, voluntary, self-directed, adult oriented learning system for avatars – one which is expected to be taught by avatar instructors who will formulate the specifics of their curriculum and their methods based upon the cardinal tenets of the Groundcourse, which have been summarized by Roy Ascott as a flexible structure, “within which everything can find its place, and every individual his way,” which would give dimension and substance to the will to create and to change. In order to be able to set the groundwork for the adaptation of the Groundcourse’s principles to my model I have conducted literature reviews in experiential learning theories, with an emphasis on self-directed learning; as well as cybernetic learning. These I have combined with a survey of play theory and virtual world studies, particularly those focusing upon the avatar and metaverse creativity. From all of these I have woven together a foundation which I have combined with a visual documentation which may serve as case studies for my proposal. The new knowledge embodied through this thesis is a learning system for the creative fields that is designed specifically for the residents of online virtual worlds, and yet has its foundations in an earlier, well established and well regarded model.

The thesis answers the general question of whether the quality of artificially reared insect species should be based on performance tests for intended use or whether quality should be based on a more holistic biological approach. The empirical research is carried out using the lepidopteran leafroller 'Cnephasia' jactatana (Walker). The thesis defines biological performance and quality in terms of the success of an insect population in survival and reproduction and regards the laboratory environment as an artificial habitat that insects must colonise in order to survive and reproduce. Changes in biological performance that occurred during 12 successive generations of laboratory rearing were due to selection, acclimatisation and domestication and not adaptation. Artificial colonisation is theoretically successful within a limited range of environmental factors. As the inherent genetic variability of the founder population determines the resilience of the population to changes in performance, the ranges of environmental factors during colonisation should be wide to 'capture' much of the variability. Using body size (weight) as an aspect of overall quality, the thesis presents evidence that the final instar larva of C. jactatana has a threshold mechanism (larval critical weight, LCW) that determines pupal and adult size. There is a proportionate decrease in weight from the maximum weight that a larva attains in the final instar (LMW) to pupa ( described as constant DP ) and to adult (DA). There is a direct relation between the latent feeding period (period between attaining an LCW and LMW), LMW, pupal and adult size, and the reproductive performance (fecundity ). Within the experimental conditions diet quality, temperature, photoperiod and artificial selection had no effect on the larval critical weight, DP or DA, the larval threshold mechanism in C. jactatana is probably a mechanical trigger that initiates pupation. Diet quality, temperature and thermophotoperiods affected pupal size, adult size and reproductive performance. Photoperiod had no significant effects on size and reproductive performance. Positive assortative selections for slow development and low pupal weight significantly decreased pupal and adult size, and reproductive performance. Selection for fast development and heavy pupal weight for three generations had no significant effect on size or reproductive performance. Larval critical weight is demonstrated as useful to define quality indices and predict the performance of laboratory reared insects. The general conclusion of the thesis is that insect quality should be defined more in terms of the success in survival and colonising ability rather than solely on the success for 'intended role' or 'fitness for use'.

Resumo:
The role of individual soil microorganisms changes over the course of a plant's life - microorganisms that have no discernable role at one developmental stage may affect the plant later in its growth. Traditional analysis of the soil microbiome, which has focused principally on the relative abundances (RA) of individual organisms, may be incomplete, as underlying differences in population size cannot be addressed. We conducted a metagenomic analysis of soil microorganisms from various maize (Zea mays L.) fields at two depths, accompanied by crop yield components, to provide insight into influences of edaphic microbes on maize productivity under commercial maize production systems in Missouri. This study assesses the influence of fungi and bacteria, not only in terms of RA, but also in their estimated absolute abundances (EAA), derived by combining the results of Illumina HiSeq sequencing data and phospholipid fatty acid abundance data. Significant interactions were identified between maize yield components and soil microbes at critical developmental states. Most interactions between fungi and yield components were negative, with notable exceptions. Bacterial interactions were more complex, with most interactions during early ear development identified as positive, and most interactions during tasseling identified as negative. In addition to the effects that microbial populations have on yield, plant populations reciprocally changed the microbial community. Plant developmental state was the greatest predictor of bacteria, with the microbial communities present during the active growing season being most similar to each other, whereas the preplant microbiome and post-reproductive microbiome being most similar to each other. Fungal communities were primarily dependent on location.

Abstract This paper explains the efforts to assess the integrity status and to extend the life of the subsea system connected to a Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessel (FPSO) moored offshore in Brazil, at 700m water depth, set up in 2003 as the first IOC operated assets in Brazil. The work performed covered the assessment of flexible risers, flowlines, umbilicals and rigid gas export line, comprising studies on operational history, simulations, in-loco special inspections (AUT, EMAT and Direct and Indirect flexible riser tensile armour inspections) and actual FPSO and risers' movement monitoring. Subsea equipment as Christmas trees, manifolds and PLETs were not included, as design life was sufficient. The results found that some equipment was in remarkable good shape, whilst others had compromised integrity. Assessments demonstrated that some METOCEAN and motion data for the FPSO, utilized during the design phase, were non-conservative when compared to the real case, which led to under design of risers' fatigue life. In-loco verification of some equipment integrity revealed damages, probably related to fatigue associated with corrosion. Improvements on the existing system and new monitoring techniques applied to the field, to assure safe operations past its original design life, are also depicted. The work performed was pioneering on life extension of a subsea system for a field operated by an IOC in Brazil and can contribute to other operators facing ageing assets in the country.

Resumo:
Abstract With many of the offshore platforms around the globe well past their design life, developing targeted and cost-effective approaches to reassess and manage the life extension of these facilities is critical for operators. Although standards such as API RP 2SIM and ISO 19901-9 provide an excellent framework for management of the structural integrity of individual platforms, operators that manage a significant number of facilities need to develop strategies for overseeing the life extension of a fleet of aging multidiscipline assets, with the objective of maximizing return while maintaining an acceptable level of risk. The paper presents a systematic risk matrix based approach to provide a predictive assessment of the residual lives of the offshore facilities using the available design and condition data, re-assessment results based on asset specific or grouped approaches, and existing inspection results and strategies. Weighting of the influence of each parameter, adapted for different asset classes to capture state-of-the-art approaches within each discipline or system, is used to predicted residual life. This method has the ability to handle sparse data and incorporate recent or planned modifications. The increased likelihood of failure with time due to damage or degradation, as well as other threats such as obsolesce, is captured through time dependent factors to provide an estimate of the residual life. The method used provides a flexible assessment of the health and residual life estimates for assets from a sub-system through to a full field perspective based on the existing risk tolerance and management strategies of the operator. This provides operators with a valuable tool to assist in optimizing the life cycle costs for the field. If the overall risk profile is not acceptable, then high level what-if analyses can be performed and incorporated into the risk model to review likelihood or consequence reducing measures as the facilities age. This may include additional assessments (e.g. platform specific ultimate strength or fitness-for-service assessments of major equipment), changes to fabric maintenance or risk based inspection plans, load reductions, upgrading of instrumentation and control systems, implementation of strengthening, modification or repair programs, or decommissioning. Advisian has successfully applied this approach for both offshore and onshore assets. Unlike most life extension programs which are typically limited to a single discipline, this method provides a flexible multidisciplinary approach with the ability to incorporate findings covering topside structures, pipelines, piping, rotating and static equipment, electrical and instrumentation for a whole of field assessment.

Cost efficient offshore field development often involves tiebacks to existing field infrastructure. Efficient field development requires life extension of existing production facilities and pipelines to accommodate the new field resources over their life expectation. For fields near the tail end of their production the pipelines may be close to the end of their design life, and it must be shown that they have potential for extended life beyond the original design life until the end of the period of operation of the new field. Offshore pipelines are designed and constructed to recognized standards, such as the widely applied DNV OS-F101 2013 Submarine Pipelines Systems and earlier versions. The latest edition of the code was recently issued as a standard with some major updates and a modified code number i.e. DNVGL ST-F101 [1]. As pipelines age, they will inevitably be exposed to various types of degradation and an Operator must be able to both assess the significance of this damage and the pipeline remaining life to ensure that the pipelines do not fail as they age before the end of their design lives. Currently, many pipelines are operated far beyond the original design life and as mentioned above for cost efficient field development the pipeline operator often needs to demonstrate that the pipeline’s useful life can be extended another 10 or in some cases up to 30 years. For some pipelines, new operating conditions will be introduced by tie-in of new fields and this will impact the future rate of degradation. Hence, it cannot be assumed that the future degradation will be similar or less severe than experienced since commissioning of the pipeline. Extension of the life of the pipeline can be demonstrated by adopting methods of analysis that show the line is safe for an extended life under the future expected operating condition. This paper describes the risk based approach applied for pipeline remaining life and life extension analyses based on DNV GL codes and other relevant recommended practices. For illustration of the methodology a typical case of remaining life assessment of and life extension of a gas export pipeline is presented in the Case Study.

Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, the contributions of the social sciences to discussions about pandemic management have become more visible and more significant. In this essay, I review major aspects of a sociology of the pandemic. After providing an overview of the potential contributions of the different fields of sociology (the “toolbox” of sociology), I discuss two main domains: first, social inequalities and how they relate to the process of the spread of COVID-19 from exposure and infection, and to the consequences of the pandemic in the wider population; and, second, the potential long-term effects of the pandemic on the life course.

Review question / Objective: The role of telemedicine has been highlighted by researchers in many fields as a potential advantage for improving quality of life, increasing patient adherence, and alleviating patient concerns. Telemedicine is patient-acceptable with high satisfaction rates in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, there is a lack of consistent results among important indicators regarding RA, such as patient pain assessment and health-related quality of life. Thus, we plan to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effect of telemedicine on patients with RA. Information sources: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases.
