Resumo:

Depuis les années 70, les préparations enzymatiques sont des auxiliaires technologiques d'origine biologique de plus en plus appréciées pour l'aide qu'elles apportent dans les différentes étapes de la vinification (Débourbage, pressurage, macération, filtration et stabilisation microbiologique). Les activités utilisables en œnologie sont décrites par le règlement européen 1493/1999 et les résolutions œnologiques 11–18/2004 de l'OIV. A ce jour, les protéases ne font pas partie des activités enzymatiques autorisées car jugées inefficaces dans le milieu hostile qu'est le vin. Plus récemment, il a été démontré que l'utilisation d'une aspergillopepsines couplée de la flash pasteurisation permettait l'hydrolyse complète des protéines thermo-instables des vins blancs à l'échelle pilote et industrielle. L'objectif de ce travail est d'explorer de nouvelles applications œnologiques à l'utilisation de protéases. Pour cela, 4 protéases industrielles ont été testées sur l'amélioration de la filtrabilité des vins et l'élevage sur lies d'un vin rouge et un vin blanc. Ce travail a permis de mettre en évidence que l'utilisation de protéase pouvait améliorer sensiblement la filtrabilité des vins. L'amélioration observée est plus importante avec un test de filtrabilité (Vmax sur membrane 0.45 μm) qu'en filtration tangentielle (membrane céramique 0.2 μm). Enfin, en l'absence de flash pasteurisation les protéases ne semblent pas avoir d'effet sur la filtrabilité ou l'élevage sur lies des vins. Вульварная интраэпителиальная неоплазия (vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia, VIN) – неинвазивное предраковое поражение вульвы, которое встречается у 50–70% пациенток, страдающих плоскоклеточным раком вульвы. До недавнего времени радикальные хирургические методы были стандартом лечения VIN, однако, учитывая психофизиологические осложнения, связанные с удалением обширных зон поражения и невозможностью вести нормальный образ жизни, с конца ХХ века осуществлялся поиск менее агрессивных методов лечения. Фотодинамическая терапия (ФДТ) – эффективный и безопасный вид лечения предрака вульвы с благоприятными результатами, в том числе косметическими у женщин репродуктивного возраста. Методы. В статье представлены данные о классификации, этиологии и патогенезе, методах диагностики и видах лечения VIN, результаты исследований, посвященных применению ФДТ при лечении VIN, и собственные клинические наблюдения. Результаты. Описаны 2 клинических случая пациенток с VIN различной степени тяжести, которым до ФДТ были проведены разнообразные виды терапии. После применения ФДТ наступило значительное улучшение. Фотодинамическое лечение не вызывает выраженного дискомфорта при применении, хорошо переносится и является практичным. Полученные результаты свидетельствуют о безопасности и удобстве применения данного метода лечения. Заключение. Преимущество ФДТ при VIN заключается в ее способности воздействовать на многоочаговое заболевание с минимальным разрушением тканей, сохранением анатомии вульвы и отличными результатами купирования симптомов. Благодаря этим свойствам ФДТ является одним из перспективных вариантов лечения VIN. Vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) is a non-invasive precancerous lesion of the vulva, which occurs in 50–70% of patients suffering from squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva. Until recently, radical surgical methods were the standard method of treating VIN, however, given the psycho-physical complications associated with the removal of extensive lesion areas and the inability to lead a normal lifestyle, since the end of the 20th century, less aggressive treatment methods have been sought. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an effective and safe type of treatment for vulvar cancer with favorable cosmetic results. Methods. The article presents data on the classification, etiology and pathogenesis, diagnostic methods and types of treatment of VIN, the results of studies on the use of PDT in the treatment of VIN, and our own clinical observations. Results. Two clinical cases of patients with VIN of varying severity who underwent various types of therapy before PDT were described. After the application of PDT, there was a significant improvement. Photodynamic treatment does not cause pronounced discomfort when used, is well tolerated and is practical. The results obtained indicate the safety and convenience of using this treatment method. Conclusions. The advantage of PDT for VIN lies in its ability to affect a multi-focal disease with minimal tissue destruction, preservation of the anatomy of the vulva and excellent results in relieving symptoms. Due to these properties, PDT is one of the promising treatment options for VIN.

<p style="text-align: justify;">Les protéines ou glycoprotéines de poids moléculaire compris entre 20.000 et 35.000 Da sont responsables de la casse protéique des vins blancs.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Leur séparation par électrophorèse capillaire permet de montrer que ce sont les fractions protéiques les moins thermostables qui sont les plus difficiles à éliminer par la bentonite.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">D'autre part, il est montré que, lors de l'élevage sur lies des vins blancs, on assiste à une amélioration de la stabilité protéique. Cette amélioration n'est pas dûe à une activité protéolytique des levures au cours de leur autolyse puisque les teneurs en protéines varient peu et que l'addition d'un autolysat à activité protéolytique a peu d'effet sur la stabilité protéique. En fait, l'amélioration de la stabilité protéique des vins blancs au cours de l'élevage sur lies apparaÎt essentiellement due à l'effet protecteur de macromolécules libérées à partir des parois levuriennes. En effet, l'addition de mannoprotéines à un vin permet d'augmenter sa stabilité protéique et par la même de diminuer la dose de bentonite nécessaire à sa stabilisation.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">L'addition d'écorces de levure ou de lies fraîches dans un milieu alcoolique entraîne une augmentation de la teneur en acides gras libres suivie d'une diminution progressive; les lies fraîches ne cèdent pratiquement pas d'acide palmitoléique, inhibiteur de l'activité malolactique.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">La teneur en acides gras libres augmente au cours de la macération des raisins rouges, mais elle est peu affectée par la macération préfermentaire des raisins blancs.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Par ailleurs, les teneurs des vins en acides gras libres varient en fonction du cépage.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">+++</p><p style="text-align: justify;">This work deals with the free latty acids (C12 to C18:3) content of different mediums; these substances seem to have an activity on the alcoholic and the malotactic fermentations.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">ln a first step we have studied the influence of the addition to the medium of yeast ghosts and fresh yeast cells (lees).</p><p style="text-align: justify;">We have also determined free fatty acids in red wines (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec) in function of the time of maceration (0 to 10 days) and in white wines (Semillon and Sauvignon blanc) in function of skin contact time (0 to 6 hours) and SO<sub>2</sub> which have been added, or not, to the medium belore skin contact.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The free fatty acids were extracted from 20 ml of wine by three times 10 ml of dichloromethane ; the organic phase was concentrated under vacuum to 1 ml. The extract was analysed by gas chromatography with a capillary CP WAX 57 column from Chrompack (10 m x 0,22 mm); the chromotograph was equiped with a spitless system injector.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The addition of yeast ghosts and fresh lees into an alcoholic medium causes a temporary increase of the free fatty acids followed by a constant decrease. However, the fresh lees do not give palmitoleic acid which is an inhibitor of the malolactic activity.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The time of maceration plays a positive part on the free fatty acids content of the wine; this is more important for the red wines than for the white ones.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The free fatty acids content of the wines changes according to the grape variety.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Certains constituants volatils du bois de chêne sont dosés dans les vins par chromatographie en phase gazeuse: furfural, méthyl-5-furfural, alcool furfurylique, β-méthyl-γ-octolactone). La levure <em>Saccharomyces cerevisiae</em>, à partir du furfural, peut produire de l'alcool furfurylique. Cette réaction intervient naturellement au cours de la fermentation, la réduction du furfural par les «lies» est plus lente. Il est ainsi possible de différencier analytiquement, après 3 mois d'élevage, un vin fermenté en cuve puis élevé en barrique neuve de chêne, d'un vin ayant été logé en barriques neuves dès le début de la fermentation alcoolique.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">+++</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Some volatile compounds from oak casks (furfural, methyl-5-furfural, furfuryl alcohol, β-methyl- γ-octolactone) are analysed in wines by gaz liquid chromatography. Yeast <em>Saccharomyces cerevisiae</em> is able to produce furfuryl alcohol from furfural. This reaction naturaly occurs during alcoholic fermentation of wines in new oak-casks. Alter fermentation, reduction of furfural by the « lees » becomes slower. So, after 3 months of aging, it is possible to differenciate on analytical data, a wine fermented in tank and aged in new oak casks from a wine fermented and aged in new oak casks.</p>

The article presents the results of experimental research on the determination of the coefficient of reduction of the air flow rate, pressure losses and the necessary power consumption of the exhaust fan, depending on the rotation angle of the damper. The diagram and general view of the laboratory equipment for researching the operation modes of the intake damper, which is the part of the automatic ventilation system for the intake of contaminated air from livestock premises, is given. Its main element is an intake valve with servo drives. The damper is round-shaped and rotates around an axel that lies on its plane. Based on the results of the first stage of experimental studies of the ventilation system for the intake of polluted air, the dependences of the output air flow rate Vout, air consumption qout, the air flow rate reduction coefficient ι, the conditional area of the opening σout and the fan power consumption Ndamp on the input speed Vin, the angle of rotation of the damper β and the diameter were determined duct Dp. When the dampers are gradually opened by a given angle β(t), the inlet velocity Vin(t) increases from 11.42 m/s to 17.98 m/s, which is explained by the fact that the damper creates a certain pneumatic resistance and the air flow returns to in the opposite direction, while reducing the overall speed of the incoming air. At the outlet, the airflow velocity Vout(t) increases from 0.08 m/s to 17.83 m/s. Moments of opening of the damper occur within 1 s, and a significant increase in speed is observed, both at the inlet and at the outlet, due to the occurrence of turbulent motion. After opening the damper to a given angle, the speed decreases and stabilizes. According to the results of the second stage of experimental studies of the ventilation system for the intake of contaminated air, the algorithm for controlling the dampers depending on the ratio of gas concentrations was verified. The dependence of the power consumption of the fan N of the ventilation system for the intake of contaminated air on the length of the air duct between the L0 modules and the air consumption Qin was determined.

My considerations are typological in nature. A lie is a disingenuous assertion made to another person with the intent of deceiving the other person into believing both that the assertion is true and that the liar believes it to be true. This definition is morally neutral. It requires a further, moral judgment to determine whether a lie is a good or a bad thing, or whether, in specified circumstances, a lie is morally right or wrong. However, what if the truth is not only occasionally contaminated but lies are spread en masse in order to make the addressees question their ability to judge or to induce collective self-deception? Beginning with small-scale use of lies, related variants of dishonesty – especially large scale, propagandistic uses of lies – are conceptually characterized and evaluated. Lies can be systematically distinguished via their purposes.

The object of research is the process of automating systems for structuring data from several sources. The subject of the research is methods and algorithms for implementing a complete system for automated and parallel processing, validation and structuring of data. One of the most problematic areas is the merging of databases with different structures and several common fields into a generalized structure. The research was aimed at developing a system to increase the efficiency of automation of big data processing. As a result of the work, optimization methods were studied, the influence of their internal parameters on the operation of algorithms was analyzed, their main advantages and disadvantages were determined, and software was developed in which the corresponding methods were implemented. An algorithm for structuring data before processing has been obtained. Data structuring is achieved by performing the «mapping» operation. Mapping can take place by indexes of already cleaned data or using a defined dictionary with a given set of keys, which allows not to care about the sequence of storing values and their possible shift. The practical significance of the developed system lies in the improvement of methods of collecting and processing information for the purpose of its further validation, cleaning and accumulation in the following categories: geographic addresses and geo-coordinates, validation and automated addition of a mobile phone number to the international format, processing of car numbers (in modern and outdated format), VIN code of the engine and car brand, validation of urls of social networks, passport data and processing of personal data. Compared to similar methods for processing large volumes of data, the possibility of splitting the input file or stream into separate parts was used, the cleaned data from which is combined at the end of the system operation. Thanks to this, it is possible to process data whose size exceeds the available volume of the device's RAM, and the method of working with loosely structured text files in CSV format has been improved.

This article considers the formal and critical consequences of organizing an aesthetic corpus around the philosophical concept of the fragment via a reading of Aryan Kaganof’s “Ten Monologues from the Lives of the Serial Killers” (1994). This experimental video sets spoken accounts from the perspective of the likes of Ted Bundy and Charles Manson alongside grainy, ambiguous imagery. Instead of thematic meditations on violence, the monologues circle around quasi-nostalgic reflections on the past and the nature of identity. The film frustrates any language of formal analysis that would rely on accounting for what is present in the film, instead proposing a sympathy with poststructuralism’s efforts at displacing the metaphysics of appearance. Violence is not what resides ready-made within the work, nor is it reducible to the realm of the visible or the audible, but is an unstable process bound up with the act of reading itself. The fragment as a formal problem holds out the abstract, general notion of a break in ways that compel a rethinking of violence as something impersonal, rhythmic, and grammatical.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to illustrate the influence of media coverage and sentiment about brands on user-generated content amplification and opinions expressed in social media. Design/methodology/approach This study used a mixed-method approach, using a brand situation as a case example, including sentiment analysis of social media conversations and sentiment analysis of media coverage. This study tracks the diffusion of a false claim about the brand via online media coverage, subsequent spreading of the false claim via social media and the resulting impact on sentiment toward the brand. Findings The findings illustrate the influence of digital mass communication sources on the subsequent spread of information about a brand via social media channels and the impact of the social spread of false claims on brand sentiment. This study illustrates the value of social media listening and sentiment analysis for brands as an ongoing business practice. Research limitations/implications While it has long been known that media coverage is in part subsequently diffused through individual sharing, this study reveals the potential for media sentiment to influence sentiment toward a brand. It also illustrates the potential harm brands face when false information is spread via media coverage and subsequently through social media posts and conversations. How brands can most effectively correct false brand beliefs and recover from negative sentiment related to false claims is an area for future research. Practical implications This study suggests that brands are wise to use sentiment analysis as part of their evaluation of earned media coverage from news organizations and to use social listening as an alert system and sentiment analysis to assess impact on attitudes toward the brand. These steps should become part of a brand’s social media management process. Social implications Media are presumed to be impartial reporters of news and information. However, this study illustrated that the sentiment expressed in media coverage about a brand can be measured and diffused beyond the publications’ initial reach via social media. Advertising positioned as news must be labeled as “advertorial” to ensure that those exposed to the message understand that the message is not impartial. News organizations may inadvertently publish false claims and relay information with sentiment that is then carried via social media along with the information itself. Negative information about a brand may be more sensational and, thus, prone to social sharing, no matter how well the findings are researched or sourced. Originality/value The value of the study is its illustration of how false information and media sentiment spread via social media can ultimately affect consumer sentiment and attitude toward the brand. This study also explains the research process for social scraping and sentiment analysis.

Epidural venous plexus engorgement may occur due to several conditions that prevent the normal venous circulation. Inferior vena cava agenesis is a very rare cause of epidural venous enlargement. We present a case with a very thin inferior vena cava and left iliac vein agenesis who presented with back pain due to epidural vein engorgement and lacked other venous problems such as deep vein thrombosis.

Il est connu que les paysans vivant dans les anciennes terres serbes ?taient redevables d'un grand nombre de corv?es compare aux donations en nature restant faible, a la diff?rence des contr?es que le roi Milutin avait enlev?es aux Byzantins (1280-1283) ou ils ?taient redevables de fortes donations en nature, qui ?taient per?ues selon le syst?me de la 'dime'. Un telle pr?dominance des donations en nature n'apparait pas de fa?on aussi nette dans la ' loi pour les gens de l'?glise', qui devait ?tre appliqu?e (1379) sur les possessions de l'?glise de la Pr?sentation de la Vierge a Arhiljevica. Parmi les donations en nature figurent uniquement la ' dime' des moutons et la 'dime' des peaux, alors que sont absentes les 'dimes' de bl? et de vin. Au lieu du versement du dixi?me de leur production de vin, les paysans ?taient tenus de travailler, pour l'?glise, une partie de sa vigne dont la superficie correspondait a l'mat' (environ 965 m?). Le texte de cette'loi' ne mentionne pas non plus la ' dime' du bl?, mais, en contre partie, les paysans y sont tenus d'effectuer ' 3 jours de labour par an' pour le compte de l'?glise et d'accomplir, sur la surface travaill?e, tous les travaux des champs lies a la production de c?r?ales, allant des semailles au battage. L'obligation de ' d'effectuer 3 jours de labour' repr?sente approximativement un tiers de la grande obligation de labour concernant 9 ' mati', soit ' 8 jours de labour', dont ?taient redevables les paysans des anciennes terres serbes. Le second tiers de la ' dime' de bl? ?tait fourni par les paysans sous forme d'une donation de 4 kab?l (68,32 l) de bl?, ce qui repr?sente approximativement le tiers du dixi?me de la production correspondant a une moisson moyenne. En l'occurrence un agriculteur disposant d'une paire de b?ufs pouvait, au cours d'une ann?e, labourer et semer de bl? environ 2,5 a 3 hectares et obtenir, sur cette superficie, un peu plus de 2000 litres de bl?. Un dixi?me de cette quantit? correspond donc a 200 litres, de sorte que 68 l. repr?sentaient approximativement un tiers d'une ' dime' habituelle. Enfin, le troisi?me tiers de la ' dime' de bl? ?tait fourni sous forme de service de transport pour le compte de l'?glise, concr?tement le transport du bl? et d'autres choses depuis Arhiljevica jusqu'a la vall?e de la Struma. Il en ressort que la totalit? des charges des paysans ?taient approximativement identique sur tout le territoire de l'Etat serbe m?di?val et ce qu'ils soient tenus de verser des ' dimes' de bl? ou d'animaux domestiques ou se voient imposer de grandes corv?es de ' labour' ou sous forme d'autres travaux des champs.

Cet article analyse les relations entre la qualité du management, les exportations, et la rentabilité, à partir d’un échantillon de 187 entreprises camerounaises en 2013. Ces relations sont estimées par des équations simultanées pour corriger les biais d’endogénéité dans les liens entre ces variables. Les résultats montrent un lien direct et positif entre la qualité du management et la rentabilité, et un lien indirect via les exportations. Mais ces liens ne sont pas univoques. Lorsque le poids des exportations est supérieur à 75 % ou le ROA est inférieur à 5 %, il n’existe qu’un lien direct. Lorsque le ROA est supérieur à 5 %, il y a plutôt qu’un lien indirect.

Resumo:

This article proposes that the historian Aernout van Buchell was a cultural go-between, quietly engaged in a transnational project of globalization. The young van Buchell’s first album amicorum, begun in 1584, reveals an intellectually restless young man who was given to depression and even attempted suicide but who discovered the study of antiquities on his year-long stay in Paris. His second album reveals an older, settled, purposeful historian whose album friends were scholars and artists of considerable reputation. At least since his year in Paris, van Buchell was committed to obliterating the boundaries of space and time and removing the intellectual limits of his mind. As with the antiquities he studied, van Buchell’s alba endorse a common heritage and offer to posterity the wisdom of the ancients and that of the many contributors to his album. His stance was that of a humanist, which, in the early modern period, entailed a revival of classical languages, literature, and moral precepts.

Abstract. As permafrost thaws in the Arctic, new subsurface pathways open for the transport of groundwater, energy, and solutes. We identify different ways that these subsurface changes are driving observed surface consequences, including the potential for increased contaminant transport, modification to water resources, and enhanced rates of infrastructure (e.g. buildings and roads) damage. Further, as permafrost thaws it allows groundwater to transport carbon, nutrients, and other dissolved constituents from terrestrial to aquatic environments via progressively deeper subsurface flow paths. Cryohydrogeology, the study of groundwater in cold regions, should be included in northern research initiatives to account for this hidden catalyst of environmental and societal change.

Background: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematologic malignancy. Schizandrin B (Sch B) is one of the main dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans which is found in schisandra chinensis. Sch B has been previously demonstrated to exhibit antitumor properties. However, the effect of Sch B on MM remains nuclear. Materials and Methods: The impact of Sch B on the proliferation of MM cell lines was determined by CCK-8 assay. The cell cycle and apoptosis of MM cell lines were evaluated by flow cytometry. RT-PCR to identify the effect of Sch B on the chemokines CCL2, CCL3 and CCL14 in MM cell lines. IL-6 and VEGF concentrations of serum and cell-free supernatants were tested by ELISA. Result: Our studies revealed that Sch B suppressed the proliferation of MM cell lines via IL-6. Sch B induced cell cycle of MM cell lines arrest at G0/G1 phase and increased its apoptosis. Sch B suppressed the mRNA expression of the chemokines CCL2, CCL3and CCL14 in MM cell lines. Conclusion: Sch B suppressed the proliferation of MM cell lines via IL-6. These findings suggest that Sch B may be a promising traditional Chinese medicine for MM.

ADP-ribosylation factor (ARF) 6 regulates plasma membrane trafficking and cortical actin formation by cycling between inactive GDP and active GTP-bound conformations. Here we show that agonist stimulation of phosphatidylinositide 3-kinase (PI 3-kinase) activates a pathway that leads to ARF6 activation. We also describe experiments that propose a central role in this pathway for the PI 3-kinase-dependent plasma membrane recruitment of the cytohesin-1 family of PtdIns(3,4,5)P3-binding ARF-exchange factors.

Killing cancer softly: The resolution of cancer lies in tumor cells Dr Dipak Panigrahy, M.D., an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School looks at killing tumor cells to resolve the cancer epidemic. For decades, the standard paradigm in cancer has been to kill tumor cells either directly, via cytotoxic chemotherapy, radiation, or target-selective inhibitors, or indirectly through immune-mediated or anti-angiogenic approaches. However, in 1956, Dr. Laszlo Révész first demonstrated that co-injection of irradiated dead cells with tumor cells reduced the number of tumor cells needed to produce tumors in rodents, and accelerated tumor progression (Révész phenomenon) (1). We demonstrated that cytotoxic cancer therapy stimulated cancer growth via cell debris, as our studies are consistent with previous research on radiation-generated apoptotic (dead) tumor cells. Dead-cell-stimulated growth is a natural part of the tissue regeneration cycle, whereas debris is interpreted by the tissue as an injury signal and stimulates wound healing and regeneration. Cancer can be viewed as run-away wound healing and regeneration that fails to be self-limited.

The song of Hannah: A poetical component The prayer of Hannah is a beautiful poem, but has not received the attention as a poem which it rightfully deserves. Various aspects such as its similarity with Psalm 113, its text-critical difficulties and the secondary nature in the context of the book have previously been discussed, but unfortunately not enough thought has been given to its poetical character. This article investigates the intratextual relationships of the poem. This is done in order to illustrate that it is possible to reach a better understanding of the poem itself as well as to determine its contribution to the message of the larger context of the book.

IntroductionPsychopathy is a personality disorder characterized by lack of empathy, grandiosity, an impulsive lifestyle and antisociality. Anti-social personality disorder (ASPD) and psychopathy are distinct concepts presenting different criteria. Most people with a diagnosis of psychopathy also meet criteria for ASPD while the reverse is not true. Along the years there has been an increasing interest in investigating genetic and neurobiological factors.ObjectivesTo analyze the neurobiological factors involved in psychopathy and anti-social personality disorder according to the scientific knowledge available.MethodsReview of scientific literature via PubMed search, using the terms “anti-social personality disorder”, “biology or etiology or pathophysiology and psychopathy”.ResultsThe strongest evidence base for a genetic pathway is associated with the low-expression variant of the Monoamine Oxidase-A (MAO-A) which is linked to the X chromosome. Other genetic factors involve the 5-HTT gene, dopamine receptor genes (DRD4 and DRD2) and genetic polimorfisms at SNAP25 t-snare protein, OXT gene and the CNR1 and FAAH cannabinoid receptor gene. Structural differences in the brain have been noticed such as reduced gray matter volume in the orbitofrontal cortex, gray matter volume reductions in the mid-anterior insula and left anterior temporal cortex, subtle reductions in gray matter volume across several paralimbic and limbic areas.ConclusionsThere is considerable evidence regarding various possible underlying neurobiological processes in psychopathy although it is insufficient to suggest a single biological etiology and environmental influences cannot be excluded from a complete understanding of this disorder. The neurobiological correlates found hold promise for new research and treatment.

INTRODUCTION Screening for prostate cancer with serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) remains a controversial topic. The UK NHS Executive has issued extensive guidance stressing the importance of adequate counselling prior to performing this test. This study aims to assess men's knowledge of the PSA test at the time of their referral and their attitude towards screening. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 219 men referred to urology via the ‘fast track’ prostate cancer service were recruited into the study. Of these, 191 were referred from primary care and 28 from secondary care. All men completed a questionnaire regarding their knowledge and expectation of the test. RESULTS The response rate for completed questionnaires was 100%. Overall, 91 (41.5%) men were aware that their PSA had been performed prior to referral and only 79 (36%) men understood why the test was being done. Patients referred from secondary care appeared to be better informed. Despite these figures, 175 (80%) men said they would recommend PSA testing to a friend or colleague, and 196 (89%) men said the test should be broadly publicised. CONCLUSIONS Nearly two-thirds of the men referred to urology with an elevated PSA were unaware that they had even had their PSA done. Information about the limitations of PSA testing and the consequence of a positive test result had been deficient. Informed counselling for the PSA test should form part of the consultation of any physician intending to undertake this test whether for lower urinary tract symptoms or for prostate cancer screening.
