Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate fiction readers’ interest criteria when selecting novels in library catalogs for various search tasks. Design/methodology/approach – The data of the book selection behavior from 80 genuine fiction readers were collected using recorded interviews and conversations. The data were qualitatively analyzed. Reuter’s categorization of the components of aesthetic relevance has contributed to the construction of interest dimensions. Findings – A five-dimension categorization of interest criteria is presented based on fiction readers’ interpretations of the influential factors in fiction book selection in different search tasks. The findings revealed that readers apply the identified interest criteria in a flexible and multiphase way depending to the search task and the system used. The findings showed a context-related pattern in readers’ fiction book selections. A combination of readers’ search capacities, “behind the eyes” knowledge, affective factors and a well-functioning interaction with a system used results in a successful book selection. Originality/value – A five-dimension categorization of adult fiction readers’ interest criteria was created based on their search behaviors in library catalogs. The results provide a systematic step toward a comprehensive understanding of readers’ fiction book selection in digital environments.

Purpose – The purpose of this article is to make public librarians aware of the wealth of information about translators that is contained in bibliographic records of their own library catalogs so they could use this information for the benefit of readers’ advisory (RA) work involving translated titles. Design/methodology/approach – The article uses the method of bibliographic data analysis based on 350 selected translated fiction titles (and 2,100 corresponding catalog records) from six large Canadian public libraries. Findings – As the results demonstrate, enhanced bibliographic catalog records deliver a wide spectrum of information about translators, which can be used by public libraries to provide more informed and insightful reading advice and to make more sensible purchasing decisions with regard to translated fiction. Practical implications – The study shows how the most readily available tool – a library catalog with its enhanced bibliographic records – can be utilized by public librarians for improving RA practices. It focuses on the rarely discussed translated fiction, demonstrates a sample methodological approach and makes suggestions for implementing this approach by busy public librarians in real-life situations. Originality/value – No recent studies that have investigated enhanced catalog records have dealt with translated fiction. Moreover, while authors/writers are often in the focus of RA studies, translators are often left behind the scenes, despite their crucial role in bringing international fiction to English-speaking readers.

One of the major tasks library patrons are faced with is searching for a good book to read, particularly when they have no specific book in mind. As such, people faced with this task search in places such as online catalogs, looking at existing book reviews and descriptions, and they also ask librarians and other readers’ advisors for assistance in finding book recommendations. This paper attempts to review the research on how people conduct searches for pleasure reading, as well as research for online catalog design in order to inform the search process, leading to recommendations for future work in catalog design and readers’ advisory driven by the application of human factors principles in the search process.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study what extent readers’ socio-demographic characteristics, literary preferences and search behavior predict success in fiction search in library catalogs. Design/methodology/approach In total, 80 readers searched for interesting novels in four differing search tasks. Their search actions were recorded with a Morae Recorder. Pre- and post-questionnaires elicited information about their background, literary preferences and search experience. Readers’ literary preferences were grouped into four orientations by a factor analysis. Linear regression analysis was applied for predicting search success as measured by books’ interest scores. Findings Most literary orientations contributed to search success, but in differing search tasks. The role of result examination was greater compared to querying in contributing search success almost in each task. The proportion of variance explained in books’ interest scores varied between 5 (open-ended browsing) and 50 percent (analogy search). Research limitations/implications The distribution of participants was biased toward females, and the results are aggregated within search session, both reducing the variation of the phenomenon observed. Originality/value This study is one of the first to explore how readers’ literary preferences and searching are associated with finding interesting novels, i.e. search success, in library catalogs. The results expand and support the findings in Mikkonen and Vakkari (2017) concerning associations between reader characteristics and fiction search success.

An article about the system of catalogs – the concept, composition, functions of different catalogs in the system, about the standards and regulatory documents on the basis of which the system of catalogs was built in libraries. The system of catalogs was created and improved in libraries for a long time. Thirty years ago, an ideal system of catalogs developed in the country, effectively providing information retrieval. Terminological problems were solved. Standard documents are approved. Libraries were preparing for the introduction of OPACs. But development has gone the wrong way. Professional library specialists were not involved in the work, world experience was not studied. The author shows that the technological revolution and library automation has destroyed the principles of upbuilding a system of catalogs. The communications are lost where an OPACs has come to replace it, there are no references, there are no dialogue with readers. These shortcomings are associated with unsuccessful programs that were developed without taking into account the opinions of professional librarians. There was no complete replacement of card catalogs with an OPACs. However, this did not prevent the closure of card catalogs in a number of libraries in the country.

In November 1862, a great event took place in the Library - the fi rst in its history a special reading room for 250 seats was opened, built according to the project of V. I. Sobolshchikov and his assistant I. I. Gornostaev, laid down under the director M. A. Korf , but completed already in the directorship of I. D. Delyanov. The appearance in the Public Library of a new, spacious and comfortable hall for receiving visitors with a special study for artists and a room for ladies ushered in a new era. In the hall itself, a reference library of several thousand books was organized, and the supply of books from departments to the reading room was accelerated. In the reading room, instead of one general catalog for a subsidiary fund, there were seven printed systematic catalogs. The article recreates the history of the reading room in the pre-revolutionary period, provides information about its managers, gives a description of the organization of services for readers in it.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the agenda for library technology for the next 20 years. Design/methodology/approach A long-term historically based analysis of the evolving roles of librarians and library technology, especially the catalog. Findings The rise of standardized cataloging codes, communications formats, bibliographical utilities, and software for online searching constitutes a great triumph in universal bibliographical access for everybody. But each reader is unique and no-one is “everybody” so a uniform service is not ideal for all. The ideal librarian knows both the collection and the readers. The catalog is a guide to the collection and a surrogate for the librarian. The librarian understands the readers. The development of library technology will remain significantly incomplete until the uniqueness of each reader is accommodated. Some ways to do that are noted. Research limitations/implications Research and development should focus on relating the uniqueness of individuals to the uniformity of services provided. Practical implications Strategic directions are indicated. Originality/value Provides a perspective on the development of library service in terms of changing relationships between technology and librarians.

This article examines the linguistic structure of folksonomy tags collected over a thirty-day period from the daily tag logs of Del.icio.us, Furl, and Technorati. The tags were evaluated against the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) guidelines for the construction of controlled vocabularies. The results indicate that the tags correspond closely to the NISO guidelines pertaining to types of concepts expressed, the predominance of single terms and nouns, and the use of recognized spelling. Problem areas pertain to the inconsistent use of count nouns and the incidence of ambiguous tags in the form of homographs, abbreviations, and acronyms. With the addition of guidelines to the construction of unambiguous tags and links to useful external reference sources, folksonomies could serve as a powerful, flexible tool for increasing the user-friendliness and interactivity of public library catalogs, and also may be useful for encouraging other activities, such as informal online communities of readers and user-driven readers’ advisory services.

This article draws attention to the availability of Latin translations of Greek patristic literature in western reading communities before the year 800 through a survey of the contents of hundreds of surviving manuscripts from the Merovingian and Carolingian periods. An examination of the presence of the translated works of eastern church fathers in the 8th-century florilegium known as The Book of Sparks ( Liber scintillarum) and monastic library catalogs from the early 9th century corroborates the impression left by the manuscript evidence. Taken together, these sources allow us to gauge the popularity of particular eastern authors among Latin readers in early medieval Europe and to weigh the influence and importance of Greek patristics in the western monastic tradition.

Abstract Scholars have noted the significance and spread of the second-hand book trade in seventeenth-century England, but so far little information about the books and their prices has been available. This essay examines the evidence from annotations to an early book auction catalogue relating to ten auctions that took place in London between 1676 and 1682, providing the prices for thousands of books. A comparison between the prices for which books sold at auction, and the prices of the same books new in the Term Catalogues in the decade prior to these auctions reveals that most of the relatively new books sold at auction for a considerable discount off their retail price. For older books, the prices primarily depended on condition and demand rather than the expense of producing the book or its age. This shows a turn towards a customer-driven pricing structure which has significant implications for how we understand the connection between book prices and readers in the late seventeenth century.

Resource Description and Access (RDA) is a new standard for describing and accessing information specifically designed for the digital environment. It is a shift from Anglo American Cataloging Rules II (AACR2) and it aims to provide a more user friendly service to library users in locating information in the library online catalogs. It is also targeting to facilitate a cataloging standard which can be shared globally and be edited simultaneously by the catalogers and other users when needed. There are similarities as well as diff erences between these two cataloging standards. Since the development of RDA started in 2005, there has been a hot discussion among catalogers about the advantages and disadvantages of the two standards against each other. There are also arguments on the changes that RDA would introduce to the cataloging standards and questioning if this is the right time to move forward with these changes. This paper provides the reader an overview of the development of RDA standards and the outcome of this new standard yet to be adopted.

SLiMS has many features which help readers, but there is still no recommendation feature to help the readers finding the books which are relevant to the specific book that readers choose. The application has been developed using Vector Space Model to represent the document in vector model. The recommendation in this application is based on the similarity of the books description. Based on the testing phase using one-language sample of the relevant books, the F-Measure value gained is 55% using 0.1 as cosine similarity threshold. The Library of the Jesuit college in Lviv is known as the biggest and best-equipped library in the city. It was founded at the beginning of the 17th century, and after one hundred years, there were approximately 12,000 books. But there was a huge loss of books after a great fire in 1734. After that Jesuits restored their book collection. Historiography says that there were approximately 10,000 books in the library at the time of the dissolution of the Society of Jesus. Unfortunately, it is impossible to verify the information about 10,000 books because historians still cannot find an old catalogue of the library. In the article, the author analyzes manuscript III 12719 from the National Library in Warsaw. The author proves that this manuscript is the catalogue of the library of the Jesuit college in Lviv. This catalogue was created in 1774, after the dissolution of the Jesuits. Its author was a former Jesuit monk, Stanisław Chmielowski, who was assigned by Austrian authority to create catalogues of the libraries of the abolished Jesuit colleges. According to this catalogue, the Jesuit library consisted not of 10,000 books but of 5,000. It corresponds to the information from Ludwik Grzebień, the author of the best known research about the Jesuit libraries in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. After 1713, the Jesuit library in Lviv was still functioning. Due to the order of Vienna’s authority, the Jesuit library was turned into a public library. It was the first public library in the city. At the same time, the library arranged an educational process in schools in the city. As stated by inscriptions in the catalogue, teachers, clergy, and civil servants were the readers of the library. In 1784, the former Jesuit library became a part of the Lviv University Library.

The fund of the Public Library of P. I. Makushin in Tomsk and the dynamics of its replenishment at the end of the XIXth – the beginning of the XXth century are presented and analyzed. The purpose of the article is to reconstruct the fund of this library. To achieve it, use was made of eleven printed catalogs of this library, additions and attachments to them of different years. This base allowed the calculation the number of titles and volumes of books in the library as a whole and in its departments. It is discovered that their number has increased respectively from 3925 and 6415 in 1878 to 7162 and 9334 in 1907, and in 1916 the fund was replenished by another 2753 and 3745 tytles, which allows us to talk about the steady positive dynamics of the fund replenishment. Quantitative indicators of titles and volumes with works by famous domestic and foreign writers are given in dynamics. Short lists of authors whose works on art, scientific and philosophical works presented in the library fund, and a number of works in all departments are compiled. The presence in the fund of such publications that have introduced to readers the achievements of science and technology, various religious, socio-political and economic teachings, including revolutionary ones, together with the increase in the number of books in the fund and the predominance of secular literature in it is the manifestation of the modernization of traditional society that took place in the country during the period under review.

Abstract The Poor Clares of Galway are the oldest surviving convent in Ireland, maintaining a small but important collection of rare books from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This essay offers a bibliographical analysis of these rare books in order to sketch the role of reading within the convent from the seventeenth through the twentieth centuries. By analysing material evidence of reading and circulation practices—signatures, readers’ marks, marginalia, and bookmarks—broader patterns of book usage among the Galway Poor Clares are reconstructed for the first four centuries of existence. The essay concludes with a short bibliographical catalogue of the convent’s special collections.

Although laudable strides have been made to highlight and provide access to diverse library materials about and made by traditionally marginalized communities, current approaches are curatorial, non-scalable, and non-systematic. Using a critical design approach, we address how libraries might move beyond curatorial practices with the proposal of a “Critical Catalog” that advocates for diverse materials and discusses the problems and challenges of categorizing identity. The proposed provocative catalog offers the possibility to raise awareness of diverse library materials; expose readers to new and different resources, ideas and cultures; alter reading habits; and ultimately provide more equitable representation by preventing the inadvertent and unintentional erasure of diverse library materials, thus giving a stronger voice to marginalized communities.

Harvard University is a decentralized university, with each of its nine faculties basically responsible for its own financial well-being. The library operates within the framework of this decentralization. The term ‘Harvard University Library’ therefore has two different meanings. In one seise it refers to those who are responsible for carrying out certain functions where coordination is required. Specifically, the University Library provides a unified catalogue for the c.90 library units throughout the university. It also manages the Harvard Depository, which helps to ease the space problem, and provides certain preservation services to the decentralized libraries. The Harvard University Archives is a University Library institution, and there are also University Library functions in the areas of personnel and publications. The decentralized library system began to be developed in the 19th century. Not only do the libraries not share common funding or administration; they have varied purposes and types of reader. Short-term access for outsiders is possible in almost all of the libraries. A distinguishing feature of the library is its international collections, whose development began to be emphasized at the very aid of the 19th century. The library's digital initiatives are largely aimed at providing better service to the library's readers.

In 1644, the famous Dutch scholar Nicolas Heinsius wrote to his friend Johannes Fredericus Gronovius that there were only two important libraries in Antwerp: that of the Jesuits and that of Balthasar Moretus II, the most important printer of his time, who had supplied him with some manuscripts of Ovid. At that point the catalogue of Moretus’s library comprised 2985 titles, nearly 400 more than the library of Leuven University with its 2600 titles. Heinsius tried several times to convince Moretus to sell his library but, fortunately for Antwerp, Moretus refused to do so. In this article I will demonstrate why we should be so delighted with Moretus’s decision to keep his library intact and preserve it for the future.

Purpose – This paper aims to investigate the quality of access to translated fiction published between 2007 and 2011 in six large Canadian public libraries, answering the question about what public libraries can do to help acquaint their readers with international translated fiction. Design/methodology/approach – The article uses the method of bibliographic data analysis based on 2,100 catalog records. Findings – As the results demonstrate, enhanced bibliographic catalog records deliver a wealth of information about translated fiction titles and facilitate meaningful subject access to their contents. At the same time, promotional activities related to translated fiction have room for improvement. Practical implications – Despite the fact that the study focuses on public libraries, its findings will be of interest not only to public but also academic librarians, any librarian tasked with the selection and acquisition of translated fiction, reference and readers’ advisory librarians in any type of library, Library and Information Science students and anyone interested in access to translated fiction. Originality/value – While many recent studies have turned their attention to enhanced catalog records and their role in access, discovery and collection promotion, there are no studies dealing with translated fiction specifically. The article also contributes to seeing an in-depth understanding of bibliographic records and cataloging as part and parcel of reference librarians’ knowledge and skill set, which improves retrieval practices and access provision.

The article is devoted to the study of a particular aspect of the dialogue between Ivan Turgenev and the literature of the United States of America. The piece of research focuses on the Russian writer’s book collection, namely that part of it, which contains the works of American authors in English and French. According to the existing catalogs and inventories all the surviving copies of Turgenev’s library have been identified with maximum details. As a result, the “American Foundation” today consists of four representatives of romanticism: J. Cooper, W. Irving, N. Hawthorne and E. Poe. All discovered books of American literature are carefully described. The object of the description is the publication history of the book, the features of its external design and, which is especially important, the traces left by the reader on the pages, i. e. nail marks and underlines and notes made by a pencil. Thus, the earliest by the date of publication in Turgenev’s library is the novel by J. Cooper “The Pioneers”, published in French as part of the fourth volume of the massive series of Cooper’s works. Several nail marks were left on the pages of the novel, which certainly belong to Turgenev’s reading style. In addition, in the process of studying Turgenev’s library, it was possible to establish that the collection of fantastic fiction stories by E. Poe, translated by S. Baudelaire, which stands farthest in the chronology of publication, did not really belong to a Russian writer and could not be the subject of his reading. As a result, the works of American authors preserved in Turgenev’s library make it possible to reproduce a picture of the direct acquaintance of the Russian writer with the literature of the United States, and the marks and notes on particular books open up the prospect of setting and solving new problems (“I. Turgenev and N. Hawthorne”, “I. Turgenev and J. Cooper”) in the aspects of both the reader’s acquaintance and subsequent creative reflection.

The article considers technology of augmented reality (AR) — the imposition of digital data on real objects in real time. The aim of the article is to analyse the modification of forms and methods of library work under the influence of active implementation of AR-technology. The author notes that the interactive potential of augmented reality interfaces is increasingly being used abroad for navigation within libraries, search for necessary literature in book depositories, for tracking the movement of books and providing users with extended textual and audio-visual information. The article discusses various forms of application of AR-technologies in library practice abroad: supplementing exhibitions and expositions with audio-visual and textual information; use of QR (Quick response) codes and RFID (Radio frequency identification) tags to facilitate access to online information, development of computer games for orientation in the library space, modernization of management of library collections, etc. The author describes the use of radio-frequency tags with special elements (RFID station) for personalized assistance to readers, optimization of social relations, so familiar to modern readers who are able to specify their location, leave a message to friends or staff, etc. Such a wide application of AR-technology in the library makes it a fragment of a “smart city”, convenient intellectual environment with a light transition membrane from offline to online.Among library mobile applications as the fastest growing sphere of library services providing online access to catalogue, databases, interlibrary lending, chat rooms, SMS services, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc. accounts, the share of AR applications using QR codes and RFID tags is constantly growing. The use of augmented reality devices in libraries opens up new horizons in terms of introduction of modern methods of informatization of knowledge and user services, adequate to the era of comprehensive computerization, the ubiquitous “Internet of things”.

The article deals with the modern specifics of digitization of the fundamental library functioning in one of the leading Russian scientific institutes for social sciences – Institute of Scientific Information for Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences (INION). It is shown that after the fire in January 2015, the INION’s library never stopped to work. Nowadays, more than 3 million books and journals are available to readers in 18 departments at academic institutions in Moscow. INION receives mandatory copies of Russian publications and new foreign books and journals due to international exchange. Other funds are still preserved in the warehouse due to insufficient funding from the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education, but after moving to a new building on the historical site on Nakhimovsky Prospekt in Moscow, the INION’s library will expand its opportunities for readers. In preparation for this move, several digitization projects are being implemented at once in INION – from the development of famous bibliographic databases, which are still in commercial demand not only in Russia but also abroad, to the digitization of books and the creation of electronic catalogues of the library. The authors draw parallels between the modern objectives and methods of the modernization of the INION’s library in accordance with the challenges of the digital era and specifics of creation of the Library at the Socialist Academy of Social Sciences (which after several reorganizations in 1969 originated the INION) by difficult financial and political conditions of 1920-30-ies. It is concluded that any steps towards digitalization should be focused primarily on the needs of readers (postgraduates, researchers and university teachers) and not based on the proposals of technocrats who have little idea in which direction social and humanitarian sciences are developing. The ultimate goal of the development of the INION’s library should be to increase the competitiveness of scientific products of Russian social scientists in the world.

India's National Library traces its origins to the Calcutta Public Library, which was opened in 1836 and amalgamated with the Imperial Library in 1903. It receives all material published in India. Its four main groups of activity are Collection Building and Collection Organization, Readers' Service, Conservation of Library Materials, and Administration. These activities are carried out by numerous divisions, of which the subject and language divisions function like individual small libraries, responsible for acquisition, processing and specialized reference services. Some stock is available for loan. There is a small Children's Library. The Conservation Wing has Preservation, Laboratory and Reprography Divisions. An extensive automation programme has started fairly recently; first applications will be for acquisitions and cataloguing. Future projects include the production of a National Union Catalogue, the collection of better statistics of Indian book production, and the acquisition of microforms to fill important lacunae in the collection. Plans for a new six-storey building have been approved.

The article considers the role of merchant libraries in the history of the city. The reviewed books open a new publishing series of the scientific library of Irkutsk University, dedicated to merchant libraries of Irkutsk. Its publications provide an opportunity to get familiar with the old book collections of Irkutsk residents, know more about the interest in books and reading in our city as well as the history of private libraries. The first book in the series, published in 2019, was dedicated to the book collection of the largest Irkutsk merchant, the philanthropist and bibliophile V.N. Basnin, whose estate was one of the largest cultural salons in Irkutsk in the first half of the 19th century. The book under review contains the most complete catalog of Basnin’s library, which he had been collecting for more than 40 years. It should be noted that he was not only a reader, but also quite a professional bibliographer, ordered by mail novelty books, making their systematization and description. The second book in the series is dedicated to other merchant libraries. Its compilers have done a lot of research work to find these publications, systematize them and identify their owners. The catalog presented by the Irkutsk State University library most fully reflects the merchants’ interest in printed publications. It includes 969 book titles, reflecting 1 194 editions with exlibrises, autographs and notes of their owners. Despite the purely bibliographic nature of the peer-reviewed publications, which are considered in the research, they are of interest to different groups of people. The author notes the importance of the books not only to library workers, but also to all the readers who are not indifferent to the history of cultural life in Irkutsk, as well as to the role of books and home libraries in personality development and formation of human abilities.

The article also contains bibliographic descriptions of published materials of various periodicals of 1920–1930 of the last century. It should be noted that published materials before 1930 were written in Arabic writing and then in later years until 1940 in latin. It is particularly noted that in 1921 part of the library passes to the old district of the city of Tashkent under the name «Eastern Library». Book funds were mainly in Russian, Arabic and Tatar, as well as in Farsi. Many works were devoted to the social development of the library, such as the replenishment of the book fund, the purchase of library equipment and technological equipment for the use of readers. And in the same year began to keep records of books on catalogue cards to find the right books.

The Mobile Library at the North Jakarta Administration City Library and Archives Office is a mobile library engaged in learning to increase readers' interest, especially in terms of learning. Where in the process of borrowing and returning books in the mobile library is still not well computerized and some processes are still done by hand and stored in catalog books. So that unorganized data is difficult to find, is often lost and makes it difficult for administrators to prepare reports. From the existing problems the writer designed and built a mobile library information system which is expected to be able to handle these problems. In looking for needs, system development is carried out through data collection methods by observation. In the system development method, the authors use object-oriented development methods with tools using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) in system analysis and design. Researchers use the PHP and MYSQL programming languages as the database. It is hoped that with this mobile library information system, the processes involved in borrowing and returning books will be easier, because this mobile library information system can be accessed multi-user.

Features of work of libraries in the conditions of quarantine and their activity directed on providing users with necessary іnformation and resources are considered; introduction of new services, creation of new opportunities in the article. Domestic libraries focus on: providing users with the opportunity to work with electronic resources (catalogs, search engines, web portals, repositories, databases; providing online services (electronic references, virtual exhibitions, document indexing, editing bibliographies, etc.); creating the conditions for online events (video conferences, online clubs, webinars, and training courses). Library sites present the results of the analysis and generalization of the experience of domestic and foreign university libraries. New electronic textbooks are posted on library sites, and it is possible to place the works of scientists in university repositories. A special feature of foreign libraries, in addition to a wide range of online services and access to all digital collections of universities and foreign catalogues, is their focus on the reader: users who are debtors are allowed to use electronic resources, automatically extend the date of return of books (book fees, during this period, are not charged). Users can send offers to purchase books not included in the university subscription. Libraries are actively digitizing collections and provide access to the texts and videos of world achievements in scientific experiments for information support of distance learning. The tendency to deepen the cooperation of university libraries with publishers to provide remote access to electronic resources and databases, previously available only on the university network or for a fee, is widespread.

The Liepāja City Reading Library, founded in 1777, includes books primarily in German, but there are also publications in French and Latin. The founder of the library, Johann Andreas Grundt (1732–1802), pastor of the Latvian congregation of the Anna Church, gathered 50 readers during the first two weeks of the library’s existence. Over the years, books on the natural sciences, geography, history, medicine, law, art, travelogues, fiction, encyclopaedias, periodicals etc. have been stored on the library shelves. The reason for the library’s closure in 1799 was because of censorship; officials of the Russian Empire determined that the library contained banned books, including those related to the events of the French Revolution. The article identifies and studies works translated from French into German and created by German authors under the influence of the revolution and German periodicals from published library catalogues. Qualitative desk research methods and digital tools are used in the collection and analysis of the material. The objective of the research is to find what ideologically incorrect literature related to the French Revolution was represented in the Liepāja library at the end of the 18th century. The operational term of revolutionary literature is used to refer to the range of literature analysed in this study, which includes periodicals, almanacs, pamphlets, letters, speeches, and theatrical dialogues. The study concludes that it was possible for the readers of the Liepāja library to obtain detailed information on the events of the French Revolution and the political changes, as the proposed literature provides different views on the revolutionary events. The works of French authors express a pro-revolutionary opinion. The point of view of the German authors is more distant and differentiated – from the positions of the constitutional monarchy to the open and hostile condemnation of the revolution.

The article analyzes the activities of the network of agricultural libraries. The main statistical indicators are given, namely: library stock, its structure; the number of serviced users, issued documents, receipts of publications for the year, held informational mass events; volume and content of the electronic catalog; electronic resources; information and bibliographic activity (preparation and publication of retrospective, industry, bio- and bibliographic indexes, bibliographic lists of literature), research and publishing activities, material and technical base, human resources. It was noted that agricultural libraries in 2020 satisfied the requests of 420 000 users. Readers were served by 509 specialists. The volume of the electronic catalog amounted to more than 3 million bibliographic records, the number of calls to the EC exceeded 2 500 000. Organized virtual exhibitions amounted to 1 064, literature views were 4 699, scientific works were prepared and published, mainly abstracts. Agrarian library specialists had 954 computers at their disposal. It was found that specialists with higher education prevailed in the structure of the library staff. The problems faced by libraries in their activities are characterized and suggestions for improving their work are provided, in particular: conduct more active research work by library specialists, periodically study user requests using online surveys and directly in libraries, study the experience of the country's leading libraries and abroad, transferring the main fund of printed publications to open access, using the possibilities of the Internet, including social networks, to maintain the library page and popularize their activities.

The article is devoted to the work of the automated information library system (AILS) “Bibliobus”, developed by specialists of the Library for Natural Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences (LNS RAS). The purpose of this article is to acquaint readers of the journal with the specific features of the modern AILS “Bibliobus” that provides complex automation of the main technological processes on the “way of book” of non-periodicals received in the centralized library system (CLS) holdings of LNS RAS. The authors describe capability features and functions of the system, the rules of work with it, the user interface for performing work related to centralized acquisition, book registration and distribution of the incoming books between the CLS libraries, cataloguing, classifying, etc. The system has a number of features that distinguish it from most automated library systems. It is focused on the centralized library network; part of the information is entered in the Centre, part — interactively in the libraries of the network; all the accounting and financial documents required by the centralized system are generated automatically. The AILS “Bibliobus” widely uses the bar coding, it applies to all stages of publication processing on the “way of book”; the bar codes appear on all supporting documents and printed cards. When cataloguing the publications, bibliographer introduces in the main “window” of system the bibliographic description in the format of State Standard GOST 7.1—2003 with some mark-ups, and in additional “windows” — the maximum possible metadata, providing multi-aspect search of the publication in the catalogue; the search fields for e-catalogue are generated automatically. The AILS “Bibliobus” provides for the formation of multi-level records. Its database stores the images of scanned text pages displayed in the electronic catalogue; all operations are logged with the start and end time, which allowed building on its basis a powerful reference and statistical system. The system has a modern user interface that allows the operator to obtain multiple information on various aspects of technological operations.

Introduction: Collection inventories are time consuming but necessary to clean up catalogue records and improve access and retrieval. This article outlines the methods of carrying out an inventory project at the Dentistry Library, University of Toronto, for the first time in 16 years. As a result, a kit was developed to help implement this project in future years. Description: The kit outlines the steps for the inventory including creating a shelf-list using SIRSIDynix Symphony 3.0's report function, importing into Excel, and separating the collection in smaller sections to make the process less onerous. Outcomes: Readers are informed of the results of this inventory and challenges that arose with the hope that similar projects will be encouraged in other libraries. Collection analysis was not completed in depth, but general conclusions can be stated about the strengths and weaknesses at this time. Discussion: Because of the length of time since the last inventory was completed, this project took longer than expected. The inventory kit, developed from the lessons learned, will facilitate future inventories at the Dentistry Library, as well as other libraries undertaking a collection inventory. Conclusion: Overall, this was a great learning exercise for the Dentistry Library team, and it resulted in improved access to materials by providing users with the correct item information.

Library catalogue or inventory book is one of the most important sources for exploring its stock development, collection creation strategy, content of documents. Catalogue contains a lot of information about content of collections, quality and quantity aspects, and enables reconstruction of libraries which had been closed, dispersed or damaged by various disasters. Catalogues of old, especially non-operating libraries can also play role of reflections of scientific, cultural, social life of certain historical period, sometimes even of witnesses of the whole epoch. This historical source is very important for history of book and library. Their analysis can fill gaps in research of cultural communication of certain periods. Library catalogue is an information search system giving better orientation in the library to the reader, satisfaction of his informational needs and expectations. Exploring of library catalogue can be multiform depending on the subject and object of the exploration. Scientific researches of library catalogues are not popular; they are rather additional source of book history. The old catalogues give possibility to reconstruct traditions and culture of forming catalogues of that time, retrieve regulations and specifics of their forming. The article reveals content of catalogues of institutional, personal libraries of 19th-20th centuries preserved in the Rare Book and Manuscript Department of Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania, their provenance attributes and physical features, making emphasis on Lithuanian books in these libraries. These are catalogues or lists of books owned of Samogitian Seminary, Ateitininkai Chapter established by Lithuanians who moved to Voronezh (Russia) during the 1st World War, The Januškevičiai (progenitors of the Dobužinskiai family), explorer of Lithuanian language Kazimieras Jaunius. These catalogues were selected from library catalogues of the National Library, because the institutions and persons mentioned were important for Lithuanian history and culture. Old library catalogues present evidence what important sources they can be for exploring of various historical stages of the country, historical and cultural heritage of various institutions, organizations or personalities, cultural and informational communication, distribution of a certain book, its popularity in libraries of various levels, culture and traditions of library catalogues forming during the certain time period.

One of the priority areas of the research activity of the Russian State Library (RSL), in particular its scientific bibliographic activity, is currently the study “Information and bibliographic activity of Russian libraries (theoretical and practical aspects)”. Relevance of the research is caused by the fact that information and bibliographic activity refers to the main activities of libraries of various types and kinds. Libraries create bibliographic information for wide distribution, provide bibliographic services to their readers (subscribers). Bibliographic information is also used in various particular library processes (acquisition, library and information services, organization of mass events, etc.). The article considers the results of the analysis of the R&D object — bibliographic (information and bibliographic) activity of libraries as a system object (essence, boundaries, objects and subjects of activity, internal structure, etc.). The analysis was carried out on the basis of theoretical concepts developed by the domestic bibliography science, as well as the modern terminological system of the library and information sphere, fixed in national standards. The author identified and analysed the main directions of bibliographic activity in the library (library bibliography): bibliographic processing of library collections (library bibliographic cataloguing); formation of reference and bibliographic tool; creation of bibliographic resources and products of “non-catalogue” type (indexes, lists, reviews, etc.); bibliographic service; bibliographic education; scientific and methodological activities in the field of bibliography.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of library services according to user experiences (UXs). The study discusses underlying internal problems existing in libraries that affect user satisfaction. Furthermore, it seeks to identify ways to improve the UX. Design/methodology/approach The methodology comprised a questionnaire administered at Nanjing University Library, China. The survey examined users’ satisfaction with the online public access catalogue, locating books on the shelves, and users’ participation in the organization of library resources. This study used the annual reading quantity of users system, a new system of measurement that distinguishes between informal and avid library users. Findings The data analysis indicated poor user satisfaction. The problems were mainly associated with the libraries’ resource organization, such as descriptive cataloguing, subject headings and classification, which is controlled by library administration. Moreover, users’ feedback is not integrated within the library system. Because of the process-oriented architecture of the current integrated library system, librarians and users do not communicate effectively. These barriers between users and the library staff members are difficult to overcome. Originality/value The study describes that the results relate to user satisfaction with searching and locating books based on the patron’s reading level. Differences were observed between light and avid readers in terms of satisfaction with the ease of searching and finding books. This demonstrates the internal connections of these results with library procedures. Furthermore, this study identifies improvement measures to resolve these problems.

An important direction in the implementation of the functional activities of libraries at various levels is the coordination of bibliographic work and mandatory methodological support. The issues of coordination interactions are poorly covered in the professional press. For library science, information about the activities of domestic libraries in this area remains not only a source of information, but also an object of scientific study. The purpose of the article is to study and analyze the activities of the Russian State Library as a coordination center at the national (interlibrary) level. It is established that the 1960s–1980s were the period of the highest level of development of national coordination. The analysis of existing methodological and instructional documents made it possible to determine that the leading role in the complex of such products belongs to methodological recommendations. The study of published documents for the intended and reader purpose was carried out. The practical application of the recommendations by libraries made it possible to improve the processes of bibliographic service, optimize reference and bibliographic funds, develop common principles and approaches to the scientific processing of catalogs and card files. The influence of the Russian State Library on the interrelationships of libraries in the humanitarian branch allowed us to establish a stable stage of development of coordination based on the distribution of forces in optimal conditions for scientific activity. Basing on modern realities, it is necessary to study the existing experience and resume coordination cooperation at the Russian level.

The development dynamics of the digital marketing system in the management of the information resources of libraries in the digital environment, which is widely explained in the article, reflects the main characteristics of modern libraries. Modern librarians should create ample opportunities for readers, whose demand is increasing and expanding day by day, to quickly receive unique and fresh information through the digital catalogue, allowing to enter the global information space and use the universal intellectual potential. From this point of view, the important documents that have started a new stage in the development of library work in Azerbaijan, the organization of work with digital resources in libraries, are Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On improving the activities of libraries in Azerbaijan” (April 20, 2007) and “The State Program for the development of the library and information field in the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2008-2013” (October 6, 2008). Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On some measures related to the improvement of management in the field of digitization, innovation, high technologies and communication in the Republic of Azerbaijan” (October 11, 2021) confirms the recognition by the Azerbaijani state of the construction of libraries as a priority area. In the article, the concept of information resources was analysed in the context of the library, and the place and role of digital marketing in this field was systematically studied. The study canvassed the concept of digital marketing of library, information and knowledge products and services among librarians in selected academic libraries in Azerbaijan. The authors explored the existence of the digital marketing concept in selected academic libraries, as well as the benefits derived from digital marketing of library, information and information products and services. Based on the results of the survey, it was concluded that certain information products and services can be priced, and that the centuries-old practice of providing all kinds of library, information and intellectual services free of charge should be reconsidered.

When Heloise took up the veil, she broke out through her tears into the lament of Cornelia from Lucan's Bellum civile (8.94–98). The story illustrates the extent to which the Bellum civile appealed to the imagination of its medieval readers. Indeed, evidence for the popularity of Lucan in the Middle Ages is abundant. Manuscripts of the work are listed in medieval library catalogues. Lucan was a standard author in the school curriculum from the tenth century. Quotations from Lucan are found not only in the works of Abelard and other writers, but in compilations of history, geography, and even natural science: the poet was regarded as a source for a wide range of knowledge.

The relevance of the study is due to the need to fill the historiographical gap in the study of public libraries activities of pre-revolutionary Russia as an element of the provincial cultural environment. We consider formation and activities history of Tambov public library (opened in the city of Tambov in 1833). Novelty of the work is the introduction of previously unused historical sources in the characteristic of public libraries. The subject of the study are staffing table features, use pattern of the fund, ways of functioning of the stock company in public library, specifics of shares issue and disposition, social composition of readers. An important element of the study is the research of Tambov public library decline problems in post-reform time, reasons for the lack of material resources and attempts to transfer institution to the balance of the Tambov city budget. We note the role of private initiative in the arrangement of library at different stages of its development. We assess the books catalogues published at the institution which are one of the first printed bibliographies of public libraries in Russia. In the framework of literary preferences of library users study, we consider the assessments of the gymnasium director and Tambov Seminary rector, whose tasks included supervision of students’ reading and librarians’ implementation of circulars and decrees of public education minister. Theoretical and concrete historical analysis of Tambov public library allowed to draw conclusions about the significant impact of the library institution on the local cultural environment. We emphasize that the formation of library brought together the structure of provincial society, contributed to the qualitative social and cultural transformations of local population.

During 1976-1981 the Melville J. Herskovits Africana Library of Northwestern University acquired a substantial microfilm collection of archival material from the Netherlands' Algemeen Rijksarchief (National Archives). A brief description of part of that collection was published by David Henige in History in Africa, 4 (1977). At this writing the collection numbers 301 microfilm reels, of which 165 have been cataloged (Film A374). It is no exaggeration to state that the collection places at the disposal of historians an indispensable--and so far underutilized--corpus of documentary source material for reconstructing the political and social history of the eighteenth and nineteenth century Gold Coast. The overwhelming majority of the records are in the Dutch language, though there are several reels containing original correspondence with the English forts on the Gold Coast for both the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In general the quality of reproduction is good to excellent; however, a number of reels, particularly those containing eighteenth century material, reproduce documents that have water damage or are otherwise difficult to read. It is important to note that much of this damaged or fragile material is not let out to readers by the Algemeen Rijksarchief staff, and must be consulted on microfilm at the archive. One of the major objectives in putting together the Northwestern collection was to obtain as complete a set as possible of the so-called Elmina Journals, that is, the daily record of events on the coast maintained by successive governors based at the Dutch headquarters at Elmina.

The national bibliography is a comprehensive and systematic catalog that gathers and records the information of all the publications in a country, and serves as the base for monitoring and managing all the information related. China National Bibliography in modern times has been continuously developed and improved, thanks to the legacies from its past and the experiences of other countries. The present paper first reviews the past and the present of China National Bibliography, then discusses the progress of researches on the application of Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), and finally explains the survey on the feasibility of adopting the new cataloging standard RDA in China. Although the FRBRization of China National Bibliography, to a certain extent, facilitates the readers’ use, we argue that the FRBRization of the existing MARC data cannot realize all the ideas FRBR creates. There are some problems, such as the distinctions between works and expressions, the construction issues of the bibliographic and authority data. In the process of implementing localized RDA in the cataloging of foreign materials of all languages and types, the National Library of China conducted an investigation into the feasibility of implementing RDA in the cataloging of Chinese literature, finding that although there is not a vast gulf between RDA and current Chinese cataloging standards, a lot of problems do need to be resolved both theoretically and practically. First, the Chinese national standard “Resource Description” of the day and the CNMARC standards need to be improved. Second, it is urgent to reduce the increasing manual workload of the catalogers caused by adopting RDA. Third, both the staff force and the system reserve ability of the member libraries under Online Library Cataloging Center of China should be taken into account. Fourth, RDA would add new data elements, thus the initiation of this new standard simultaneously requires updating and transforming the integrated library system. Last but not the least, the application of RDA also requires the development of corresponding online toolkits to improve the cataloging efficiency.
