An in-depth digital investigation of several 18th-century British corpora, this book identifies shared communities of meaning in the printed British 18th century by highlighting and analysing patterns in the distribution of lexis. There are forces of attraction between words: some are more likely to keep company than others, and how words attract and repel one another is worthy of note. Charting these forces, this book demonstrates how distant reading 18th-century corpora can tell us something new, methodologically defensible and, crucially, interesting, about the most common constructions of word meanings and epistemes in the printed British 18th century. In the case studies in this book, computation brings to light some remarkable facts about collectively-produced forms of meaning, without which the most common meanings of words, and the ways of knowing that they constituted, would remain matters of conjecture rather than evidence. Providing the first investigation of collective meaning and knowledge in the British 18th century, this interdisciplinary study builds on the existing stores of close reading, praxis, and history of ideas, presenting a view constructed at scale, rather than at the level of individual texts.

The subject of this chapter is the relationship between the Tuscan cities and the families belonging to the middle ranks of the lay aristocracy, from the late tenth until the early twelfth century. Taking the case-study of Florence as a starting point, a comparison with other cities of the Tuscan March in the same period (Lucca, Pisa, Arezzo, Pistoia, and Siena) will be sketched, to see that during the eleventh century we can find a similar situation in different contexts. In fact almost everywhere the ‘mid-level’ aristocracy held extensive and dispersed landholdings, many castles and private churches in the countryside, but important urban and suburban holdings as well. They established political, social, and economic connections with the primary wielders of regional power (the marquis, the counts, the bishops and other important ecclesiastical institutions) and gravitated on the cities, taking part to urban politics and probably living there some periods during the year. The situation in Florence, however, rapidly changed during the protracted crisis of the Tuscan March at the end of the eleventh and in the early twelfth centuries, when the rural aristocracy confronted a major crisis: many lineages rapidly fragmented, the splintered branches concentrated on building compact rural lordships, and they turned their backs on Florence, without playing a role in the emerging comune. But, in the same context of the decline of the March, in other Tuscan cities the separation between rural and urban aristocracies did not take place, or at least seems to have been not so stark and dramatic. Paying attention to the strength of several factors (power of the bishops, economic attraction, connections with powerful counts families etc.), different situations will be compared to reflect about the political behaviour of rural aristocracies and their degree of integration in the urban elites during the so-called ‘consular period’.

This chapter introduces some basic frameworks for securing the government take, that is, how to decide between different ownership, royalties, and tax systems. It begins with an overview of various contract types and fiscal regimes, before focusing on the particulars of the Norwegian framework. Subjects covered include the nature of different contracting arrangements (joint ventures, production sharing contracts (PSCs), service contracts, the principle of carrying, and so on), and the diverse fiscal instruments used to maximize the government’s share of the revenues (national oil company, taxes, royalties, fees, and so on). The latter part of the chapter describes how the Norwegian concessions framework has changed over time, from supporting nascent interests and attracting international oil companies to providing a more level and competitive playing field for all offshore actors.

The cortical silent period (cSP) refers to an interruption of voluntary muscle contraction by transcranial stimulation of the contralateral motor cortex. This article summarizes the physiology of cSP and gives guidelines as to how the cSP should be recorded and analysed, and refers to useful clinical applications. It describes the mechanisms at the spinal and supraspinal level can account for the cSP. It is currently thought that the cSP is mediated by gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors. cSP measurements are easy to obtain but require a standardized protocol to allow useful interpretation. Conditioning electrical stimulation of cutaneous nerves shortens the cSP. A conditioning transcranial magnetic stimulation pulse also affects cSP duration. The cSP duration is influenced by pathological conditions. cSP is an attractive probe to assess motor cortical inhibition in health and disease.

This chapter connects work conducted among the Tsimane of Bolivia with others and highlights the value and scope of social capital as a driver of competition among women. It further examines proximate and ultimate levels of causation to understand what forces instigate women to seek relationships with certain individuals and what benefits might be reaped through costly investments in maintenance of social status and networks. In particular, women invest in social resources such as friendships, kin-groups, and social status because they may increase inclusive fitness through higher quantity or quality of offspring. Finally, the chapter connects the ultimate effects with their underlying proximate levels of causation, showing that women view cooperators, helpers, and advisors as more interpersonally attractive. The conclusion offers a robust connection between proximate and ultimate causation effects and helps explain in richer theoretical detail the extent, progression, and complexity of women’s same-sex relationships over evolutionary time.

As HCI has progressed as a discipline, perhaps just as time has passed, the engineering work of programming has become increasingly separated from the HCI, the core user interface design work. At the same time, the sophistication of digital devices, across multiple dimensions, has grown exponentially. The result is that HCI and User Experience (UX) professionals and programmers now work in very different worlds. This separation causes problems for users: the UX is attractive but the program is unreliable, or the program is reliable but unattractive or unhelpful to use, correctly implementing the wrong thing. In this chapter, we dig down from this high-level view to get to what we identify as a new sort of fundamental problem, one we call premature semantics. Premature semantics must be recognised and understood by name by UX and HCI practitioners and addressed by programmers.

In an “extrinsic” conflict, an agent’s desires pull her toward incompatible actions. As a matter of contingent fact, nothing she does will get her everything she wants. Intrinsically conflicted agents are conflicted at the level of value, and this means that the conflict fractures the agent’s evaluative point of view: in order to get the appeal of one of the things she wants fully in view, she must step out of the point of view from which the other appears attractive. For this reason, the conflict cannot be resolved by deliberation as to which side is better overall. Harry Frankfurt is wrong to think that such conflicts are resolved by identifying with one side and externalizing the other. In fact, they cannot be resolved by any single, momentary act of the will: it takes time to work one’s way into a point of view. We resolve intrinsic conflicts by aspiring.

Exploring alternative conceptions of the divine, Jessica Eastwood considers the ways of believing in God that are authentic and sincere, moving beyond traditional metaphysical structures that many find difficult to accept. In this study, she examines a unique branch of religious anti-realism known as religious fictionalism, making the case for its ability to resonate on an intellectual and emotional level. Considering the extent to which fictionalism allows us to make sense of the role of religion in our spiritual lives, she presents its limitations on adhering to what might be an attractive contemporary model for philosophy of religion called ‘the humane turn’. Articulating an alternative conception of God that we can relate to in an intellectual, emotional and spiritual way, Eastwood sheds light on a minimalist form of religious realism, which preserves the reality of God without committing the theist to a host of additional religious beliefs.

The notion of equivalent income has been elaborated in the specialized context of comparing living standards of individuals in different situations regarding non-income attributes (household size, quality of life, market prices). It is defined as the income that would provide the same satisfaction as the current situation if the non-income attributes took particular reference values. Beyond the comparison of living standards, it deserves to be considered as a philosophically promising solution to the problem of interpersonal comparisons of well-being, for the context of social welfare evaluation. It appears indeed attractive when interpersonal comparisons are meant to respect individual preferences while focusing on objective functionings rather than subjective levels of satisfaction or happiness. In this chapter it is scrutinized and compared to alternative approaches: extended preferences, subjective well-being, capabilities.

Abstract Republicans consider freedom as non-domination an attractive political ideal for a modern pluralistic society that cannot be found in liberalism. This book shows how this view is untenable. By analyzing freedom as non-domination as it is understood by contemporary republicans, the book rejects the widely held view that this freedom concept is superior to liberal understandings of freedom as non-interference. In fact, setting up institutions to promote non-domination is shown to also promote non-interference. The book demonstrates how it is the focus on making an ideal suitable for a modern society that leads republicans to a view of freedom with no normative insight that cannot also be found in liberalism. However, the book also shows how republicans can adjust their freedom ideal so that it actually offers a distinctly republican contribution to political philosophy. By understanding freedom to require that citizens commit to an especially high level of political participation to deny powerholders opportunities to act against the common good, republicans can reject liberalism and freedom as non-interference. But this freedom ideal does not respect the many citizens in a modern society whose conceptions of a good life do not involve such a high level of political engagement. Republicans therefore face a dilemma: they can promote a freedom ideal suited for modern conditions, but they then end up endorsing a liberal theory promoting freedom as non-interference. Alternatively, they can promote a distinct freedom ideal, but this ideal will be unsuited for a modern society.

Psychiatry downplayed the importance of life events in causing mental illness from the 1960s on, favoring a view that all disorders except one are the result of abnormal genes affecting chemical processes in the brain. Studying the exception, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), when it was defined in 1980 helped lead to renewed recognition that early life adversity is central to all psychiatric conditions. At the same time, neuroscientists showed that early life experiences are capable of changing life-long behavior and brain function in laboratory animals. One mechanism by which this occurs is through the epigenetic regulation of gene expression. Epigenetics is the way that the expression levels of genes are controlled without changing the underlying genetic code. Epigenetics is an attractive way of understanding how individual life experiences are translated in the brain into each person’s unique set of emotions, behaviors, abilities, and risks for psychiatric abnormalities.

While medication is an evidenced-based intervention for older children with ADHD, higher side effects and lower levels of efficacy in preschool children make medication a less attractive option. This chapter presents the behavioural treatment options available for preschool children with ADHD and reviews the evidence base supporting their use, focusing on ADHD, conduct problems, school readiness, parenting behaviour, and parental wellbeing as outcomes. Mediators and moderators of behavioural treatments for preschool children are evaluated, with a focus on the lack of clear mediation and moderation evidence. Finally, important clinical and service delivery considerations are explored, including specialist versus generic types of behavioural interventions, mode of intervention delivery, and dose effects.

The scientific study of international processes (SSIP) has made substantial progress over the past twenty years, establishing itself as the mainstream research community in the field of international relations (IR) and attracting more and more attention from other disciplines. This was due to the convergence of several revolutions that have taken place in the field, including the data revolution, the formal modeling revolution, the methods revolution, the substantive revolution, and the epistemological revolution. In addition to the dramatic increase in the number of the community of scholars who use scientific logic, systematic methods, and empirical data to study IR, there was a significant improvement in the quality of research. This research has yielded important contributions to our understanding of international processes. Some of these contributions went far beyond the field; they have attracted the attention of policy makers as well as quite a few scholars from other disciplines. Some of the key findings that emerged from this research have become—correctly or incorrectly—a key component of the discourse of political leaders. Growing data availability, increased methodological sophistication, and greater scientific discipline within the profession have converged to open new research frontiers, but important challenges remain, such as the disconnect between theory and empirical tests that exists in many cases, and the almost exclusive reliance on the dyadic level of analysis. It is important to make our understanding of international processes translated into broader policy implications.

Proto-State Media Systems explores how militant, non-state organizations create, develop, and sustain media systems in the contemporary environment. It challenges generalized applications of dominant state-based media system models by revealing how such approaches lack full explanatory power for assessing the structures and functions of media systems of groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS. Utilizing theories of constitutive discourse and online networks, as well as revised conceptualizations of proto-states and media systems, the book explores how militant proto-states can create identity-based media systems capable of attracting and sustaining online and offline loyalties. Proto-State Media Systems begins by tracing the structural evolution of the media operations of al-Qaeda over a thirty-year period and of ISIS since it emerged around the turn of the century. It then mines recurrent transhistorical and transpatial referent points in al-Qaeda and ISIS’s Arabic and English media products to identify insightful, embedded criteria for evaluating proto-state media systems. It then identifies events—both material and symbolic—associated with heightened interest levels by online users and traditional media outlets, and explores how patterned uses of multimodal appeals function to sustain viewer interest over time. It concludes by providing an integrated model for comparing proto-state media systems.

Mutation, Randomness, and Evolution presents a new understanding of how the course of evolution may reflect biases in variation and unites key concerns of molecular and microbial evolution, evo-devo, evolvability, and self-organization by placing these concerns on a solid theoretical and empirical foundation. It situates them within a broader movement away from externalism and towards a focus on the internal details of living systems, including their evolutionary causes and their predictable evolutionary consequences. In the neo-Darwinian theory, by contrast, selection is the potter and variation is the clay: external selection does the important work of evolution, and gets all the credit, while variation merely supplies an abundance of random raw materials. Indeed, one of the meanings of the randomness doctrine is that any peculiarities or tendencies of mutation are ultimately irrelevant. The theory that the course of evolution is determined externally, without any dispositional role for internal factors, was particularly attractive before the molecular revolution, when biologists had little systematic knowledge of internal factors. Today, scientists are deeply immersed in the molecular, genetic, and developmental details of life. The potential for a new understanding of the role of these internal factors rests on the recognition that the introduction process is a distinctive kind of cause, not the same thing (conceptually, historically, or theoretically) as the classical “force” of mutation, but with different implications, including the ability to impose biases on adaptive evolution. This predicted influence is verified by recent evidence from episodes of adaptation traced to the molecular level.

Employer-provided benefits are independent elements in the compensation packages that make up firms’ payment strategies. Such benefits are aimed at attracting and retaining preferred employees and improving incentives. In Myanmar, there are two employee benefit systems: (1) an unregulated traditional system in which firms offer their employees in-kind benefits such as meals and accommodation; and (2) a modern mandatory system in which firms are required by law to offer payment schemes such as payment-while-absent and compensation for accidents. Using a survey of matched employers and employees in the manufacturing sector in Myanmar, we identify firms and workers that supply and demand the two types of employee benefits. We show that traditional benefits are widely supplied and demanded, while modern benefits are supplied by fewer firms and provided to fewer workers. We analyse the relative importance of a range of observable firm and worker attributes that may be associated with the supply and demand for the benefits. We find that firms that provide accommodation appear to attract young, unmarried, uneducated workers who are often migrants, and who, on average, receive lower wages compared to similar workers who do not receive equal in-kind payments. Large firms are more likely to offer the modern benefits and highly educated workers are more likely to demand them. Moreover, workers who receive modern benefits tend to stay longer with the firm and the benefit appears not to have an adverse impact on their wage level. Our findings indicate that both types of benefits contribute to sorting in the labour market. Therefore, both must be considered when labour laws are amended. Moreover, if increased minimum wages are accompanied by reduced provision of traditional in-kind benefits to low-wage workers, then there is a real risk that inequality in consumption will increase even though wage inequality decreases.
