De nombreux projets de numérisation sont actuellement menés en France et en Europe pour sauvegarder le contenu de dizaines de milliers de documents anciens. Les images de ces documents sont utilisées par les historiens pour identifier l'historique des livres. Cette thèse s'inscrit dans le projet Navidomass (ANR-06-MDCA-012) qui a pour but de valoriser le patrimoine écrit français de la Renaissance, en proposant d'identifier ses images pour les indexer. Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nous nous sommes particulièrement intéressés aux images graphiques. Ces documents,qui sont apparus avec le début de l'imprimerie, sont composées d'images complexes puisque composées de différentes couches d'informations (images de traits).Afin de répondre à ce problème, nous proposons un modèle ontologique d'analyse complexe d'images de documents anciens. Ce modèle permet d'intégrer dans une même base les connaissances propres aux historiens, et les connaissances extraites par des traitements d'images. De par la nature complexe de ces images, les méthodes habituelles d'analyse d'images et d'extraction automatique de connaissances sont inopérantes. Nous proposons donc une nouvelle approche d'analyse des images de documents anciens qui permet de les caractériser à partir de leurs spécificités. Cette approche commence par simplifier les images en les séparant en différentes couches d'informations (formes et traits). Puis, pour chaque couche, nous venons extraire des motifs utilisés pour décrire les images. Ainsi, les images sont caractérisées à l'aide de sacs de motifs fréquents, et de sacs de traits. Pour ces deux couches d'informations, nous venons également extraire des graphes de régions qui permettent d'extraire une connaissance structurelle des images. La complexification de ces deux descriptions est insérée dans la base de connaissances, pour permettre des requêtes complexes. Le but de cette base est de proposer à l'utilisateur de rechercher une image en indiquant soit un exemple d'images recherchées, soit des éléments caractéristiques des images.

La thèse a pour objet la ponctuation dans la tradition manuscrite et imprimée du Roman de Perceforest (XVe –XVIe siècles), se rattachant au genre de la chronique. Encadrée par une mise au point théorique tenant compte des recherches récentes, consacrées à la ponctuation médiévale et appuyée sur un échantillon d’extraits sélectionnés pour leur caractère représentatif, l’étude dégage son importance et ses fonctions dans la mise en page et la structuration du texte à travers ses différentes versions
The aim of this doctoral thesis is to study the medieval punctuation in the manuscript-printed tradition of the Roman de Perceforest (15th century and 16th century), related to the chronicle genre. Starting off with the theoretical adjustments, considering the recent researches devoted to the medieval punctuation, and supported with a sample of extracts specially selected by his representative character, this study brings out the importance of the punctuation and his functions in the making-up and imposing of the book and the structuration of the text through the different versions

Cette thèse se concentre sur l'étude des lettres enluminées dans les manuscrits byzantins des XVI discours de saint Grégoire de Nazianze, datés des XIe et XIIe siècles. Les homélies liturgiques étaient destinées à la lecture lors des offices, notamment monastiques. Les manuscrits sont richement illustrés de miniatures, d'images en pleine page et d'ornements marginaux, mais les lettres enluminées occupent une place centrale dans leur ornementation, servant de réceptacles privilégiés pour l'iconographie. L'étude porte sur dix-huit manuscrits grecs incluant 608 lettres enluminées. Ces lettres intègrent une iconographie riche et variée, comprenant des images directement liées au texte, telles que des représentations correspondantes aux thèmes des discours ou des portraits de l'auteur. En outre, elles incluent des scènes de la vie quotidienne, des spectacles, des travaux agricoles ou des représentations animales, qui, bien que parfois éloignées du contenu strictement théologique des homélies, apportent des nuances symboliques ou allusives. L'analyse de la fonction des lettres enluminées dans ces manuscrits liturgiques, et de leur interaction avec le texte des homélies, révèle comment ces lettres-images deviennent des véhicules de symbolisme, de métaphores visuelles, d'exégèses, ainsi que de messages théologiques et spirituels complexes. Elles transcendent leur apparence décorative pour influencer la lecture et l'usage du texte. Loin d'être de simples illustrations, ces lettres sont des éléments intrinsèques du livre, enrichissant et approfondissant le propos théologique de Grégoire et renforçant la solennité de ses paroles. La pratique d'ornementation des lettres dans ces manuscrits reflète l'admiration profonde des Byzantins pour les écrits de Grégoire de Nazianze, où les lettres enluminées reviennent à une sublimation visuelle du texte. La mise en image de la parole est une forme de vénération, soulignant l'importance théologique accordée à ces discours. Par ailleurs, la dimension liturgique et oratoire des homélies confère aux lettres enluminées un rôle central dans le déroulement de la lecture, s'intégrant de manière immédiate dans le texte et contribuant activement à sa proclamation orale. L'étude des lettres enluminées dans les XVI discours éclaire non seulement leur rôle spécifique dans les manuscrits byzantins, mais aussi leur capacité à transformer le texte en une expérience à la fois sensorielle et spirituelle. La lettre devient un médium hybride destiné à être vu, lu, contemplé, médité, tout en pouvant susciter l'émerveillement ou divertir. La lettre-image, qui atteint son apogée aux XIe et XIIe siècles, est un phénomène caractéristique de l'époque comnène. La lettre se présente comme un espace liminal et ambigu, accueillant des scènes abrégées, des micro-icônes ou des images-amulettes, reflétant les débats théologiques et la spiritualité de l'empire des Comnènes. Elle devient ainsi non seulement un repère pour la lecture, mais aussi un lieu d'animation, où une autre forme d'écriture — celle de l'image — prend vie. En parallèle, ce riche répertoire iconographique, incluant des images « profanes » telles que des spectacles et loisirs aristocratiques, des représentations d'animaux exotiques ou encore des images satiriques d'animaux moqueurs dans les lettres des homélies liturgiques, témoigne d'une société en pleine transformation. Ces représentations expriment la culture aristocratique sur ses deux terrains privilégiés, l'oikos et le monastère, projetant leur imaginaire et leur goût au sein de l'art du livre sacré et de l'espace monastique
This thesis focuses on the study of illuminated letters in Byzantine manuscripts of the Sixteen Homilies of Saint Gregory of Nazianzus, dating to the 11th and 12th centuries. These liturgical homilies were intended to be read during church services, particularly in monastic context. The manuscripts are richly adorned with miniatures, full-page images, and marginal decorations, but the illuminated letters hold a prominent position in the ornamentation, serving as primary mediums of iconography. The study examines eighteen Byzantine manuscripts, encompassing a total of 608 illuminated letters. These letters feature a rich and diverse iconography, including images directly tied to the text, such as scenes inspired by the subject of the Homilies or portraits of the author. Additionally, they depict scenes from everyday life, performances, agricultural works, and animals, which, although seemingly detached from the theological content of the homilies at first glance, they offer symbolic or allegorical nuances. The analysis of the function of these illuminated letters within the liturgical manuscripts, and their interaction with the homilies' text, reveals how these letters-images serve as vehicles for symbolisms, visual metaphors, exegesis, and intricate theological and spiritual messages. They transcend their decorative purpose to shape both the reading and interpretation of the text. Far from being mere embellishments, these letters are integral to the text itself, enriching Gregory's theological discourse and heightening the solemnity of his words. The illuminated letters in these manuscripts reflect the profound reverence of the Byzantines for the writings of Gregory of Nazianzus and embody a visual elevation of the text. This imagery acts as a form of veneration, underscoring the theological importance of the homilies. Furthermore, the liturgical and rhetoric nature of these homilies gives the illuminated letters a pivotal role in the reading process, seamlessly integrating into the text and actively contributing to its oral delivery. The study of the illuminated letters in the Sixteen Homilies sheds light not only on their specific role in Byzantine manuscripts but also on their ability to transform the text into a unique visual and spiritual experience. Instrumental to this osmosis of image and text, the illuminated letters celebrate the theological authority of Saint Gregory of Nazianzus's homilies, paying tribute to his work through the subtle fusion of image and word. The study of illuminated letters in the sixteen Homilies reveals not only their specific role in Byzantine manuscripts but also their capacity to transform the text into an experience that is both sensory and spiritual. These letters become hybrid mediums, designed to be seen, read, contemplated, and meditated upon, while also inspiring wonder or amusement. The letter-image, which flourished in the 11th and 12th centuries, is a distinctive phenomenon of the Comnenian era. The letter functions as a liminal and ambiguous space, containing abbreviated scenes, micro-icons, or amuletic images, reflecting the theological debates and spirituality of the Comnenian Empire. It serves not only as a reference point for reading but also as a dynamic space, where a different form of writing — that of imagery — comes to life. Simultaneously, this rich iconographic repertoire, featuring "profane" images such as aristocratic spectacles and pastimes, representations of exotic animals, or satirical depictions of mocking animals within the letters of liturgical homilies, reflects a society undergoing profound transformation. These representations express aristocratic culture within its two privileged domains — the oikos and the monastery — projecting their imagination and tastes into the art of the sacred book and the monasteries

Conçues dans le champ de l'art pour mieux lui en dérégler les frontières, les formes d'invention linguistique artistique sont un cas particulier dans la longue médiation des genres entre texte, sons et images, mais en relèvent tout aussi bien de formes expérimentales de littérature artistique. Productions hybrides, problématiques, les langages inventés par les artistes et leurs écritures plastiques correspondantes sont des cas - limite d'une production imaginaire, à l'heure des grands tournants linguistique et sémiotique des années 1950-1960. À l'heure aussi des théories de la communication et de la diffusion technique, qui vont marquer durablement le texte, l'image et leur rhétorique. L'imagination linguistique se cristallise dans des productions « mythopoétiques », complexes, polyphoniques. Attachées à une conception universalisante de la langue capable d'infuser tous les domaines du monde, par sa communicabilité supposée totale, ces productions deviennent les outils d'une pensée créatrice prévisionnelle. Par engagement, elles visent l'idéologie et réfléchissent à une politique de la libération identitaire par la parole. Par génétique, elles se réclament de la poésie, de la musique et de l'image pour se recomposer dans des objets sémiotques hybrides. Borderline creations, the forms of linguistic art productions are a specific case that illustrates the long and convoluted generic mediation between texts, images and sounds ; but they are also an experimental form of artistic literature. Highly problematic hybrid structures, artists' invented languages exemplify forms of fictional creation symptomatic of the linguistic and semiotic turn of the 1950s and 1960s. They mark at the same time the passion for information theory and technical devices that will influence both text and image, as well as their rhetorics. Linguistic imagination agglutinates itself in "mythopoietic" productions, complex and polyphonous. Through a presupposed total communication rêverie and linked to a universalizing conception, they are the tools of a forward-oriented creative thinking. By classificatory mania, they are the descendent inflexions of utopian projects for a perfect language that have inflamed great imaginative spirits. Through their language legislator, they are the vehicles of messianic inventivness. They are seldom ideological constructs with think the identity liberation through word. Genetically, they claim their origins in poetry, music and image only to recompose in hybrid objects. Through theatrical enactment, they return to the fundamental orality and performativity of inspired language

AbstractJohn Zorn’s interest in Mickey Spillane, the master of hardboiled novels, or what might be called postpulp, is fascinating and brings to the fore lesser-known issues in literature, music, and experimental cinema. Based on the 1987 release of Spillane and the 1999 CD edition of Godard/Spillane, this work aims to explore the notion of “aural cinema” as introduced by the composer in the liner notes to G/S, and the influence of Lettrism, an avant-garde artistic movement of the 1940s, on the building and development of such a concept. In our view, aural cinema opens up the field of possibilities for experimental film and a cinema without images by placing the emphasis on aural perception and speech rather than on the filmed image. However, as much as Godard and others have contributed to this new cinema of the ear, there is an overwhelming neglect of the true perpetrators of this paradigm shift: the Lettrists and the Lettrist legacy.

The only (non-divisive) way to address the representation of linguistic gender identity is to attempt – albeit not without difficulty – a negotiation between the protection of the common linguistic norm and accommodating the progressive proliferation of identities. This process must begin from a specific point, one for which no general consensus yet exists. There is no grammatical sacrilege in feminizing terms such as sindaco or ministro: in Italian, masculine nouns ending in -o typically take -a in their feminine forms, leaving no structural reason to reject sindaca or ministra. However, inclusive forms such as direttorə and pittorə, autorə and lettorə, rather than challenging their masculine equivalents, risk stalling progress. In classical Latin, the feminine form of pictor (pictrix) did not exist; a woman engaged in painting in ancient Rome had to resort to circumlocutions like pingendi artifex («an artist in the field of painting»). It took centuries to “institutionalize” many feminine forms of professional titles, and we are still far from granting them full social recognition. The current wave of advocacy for a neutral gender risks relegating to obscurity precisely those feminine forms (such as direttrice and pittrice, autrice and lettrice) that we must instead promote – and encourage others to promote – without hesitation.
