Urbane legende kao deo folklora se često odnose na velike korporacije tvoreći "merkantilne legende". Jedna od kompanija koja je najviše privukla pažnju folklorne misli je "Koka-kola" za čiji osnovni proizvod se u legendama govori da rastvara metal i kosti, a da se usled nepažnje prilikom punjenja flaša u njima može pronaći miš ili neki drugi glodar. Analiza najrasprostranjenijih legendi o koka-koli kao napitku i "Koka-koli" kao kompaniji, kao što su mormonsko vlasništvo, rastvarajuća moć i flaširani miš, daje za pravo tezi da urbane legende mogu nastajati kao nekonstruisani društveni problemi. S druge strane, ukoliko se narativi odnose na posledice ranije konstruisanih društvenih problema oni će u sebi sadržati značenja koja respondiraju nekim drugim segmentima stvarnosti koji se, pak, na određenom nivou apstrakcije mogu ponovo smatrati nekonstruisanim društvenim problemima.

RESUMO Este artigo tem como principal objetivo apresentar os resultados de uma pesquisa experimental sobre o comportamento ocular de espectadores surdos e ouvintes enquanto leem legendas para surdos e ensurdecidos (LSE) em um documentário. O estudo manipulou duas variáveis independentes: a velocidade da apresentação das legendas e a segmentação linguística na quebra de linha. As legendas foram apresentadas bem e mal segmentadas (quando a segmentação se dava no interior de um sintagma) e nas velocidades de 145 e 180 palavras por minuto (ppm). Dezesseis adultos participaram do estudo, dos quais oito eram surdos e oito ouvintes. Os resultados sugerem que as legendas mal segmentadas levaram a uma movimentação ocular dos participantes em que se constatou maior número de movimentos regressivos, atrasos na primeira fixação da legenda e perdas de leitura de partes da legenda, além do maior custo de processamento durante a leitura das legendas.

Abstract A few decades after its introduction on the Continent, a substantial number of Legenda Aurea legends were incorporated into the Middle English collections of saints’ lives that came to be known as the South English Legendary. Many of the Legenda Aurea legends in the South English Legendary are adaptations rather than translations. This is caused by the South English Legendary’s form, septenary or octonary couplets, but also because the author(s) felt free to use the Legenda Aurea material to suit their own, frequently didactic, purposes. A good example of this is the legend of “Petronilla,” modified so that it could serve as an exemplum in a moralising sermon. This article will concentrate on how this conversion, unique to the South English Legendary, was effectuated. As the South English Legendary “Petronilla” has never been edited, the Appendix contains a critical edition and a translation.

RESUMO Este trabalho tem o objetivo de descrever a segmentação na legendagem, ou seja, a distribuição das falas em duas ou mais legendas. Os dados colhidos em projetos anteriores realizados pelo grupo Legendagem e Audiodescrição (LEAD) da UECE sugerem que uma segmentação adequada pode garantir uma boa recepção por parte de surdos. Isso está acontecendo até mesmo na recepção a legendas muito rápidas. Com o suporte teórico-metodológico dos Estudos da Tradução, mais especificamente da Tradução Audiovisual (TAV) e da Linguística de Corpus, a metodologia envolveu uma dimensão descritiva pautada por análises quanti-qualitativas. eForam analisadas quatro novelas exibidas por emissoras brasileiras que disponibilizam legendas do tipo pop-on, usadas para transmitir programas pré-gravados. A legenda pop-on é aquela cujas frases ou sentenças surgem como um todo e não palavra por palavra, como acontece com a legenda rotativa. Os resultados mostraram que, para as novelas, os maiores problemas de segmentação encontrados estão na quebra entre os constituintes do sintagma verbal.

Para inserir-se na sociedade, a comunidade surda depende de programação audiovisual com legendas que atendam suas necessidades, mas quais os critérios para medir a qualidade destas legendas? Segundo apontaram pesquisas feitas pelo grupo Legendagem e Audiodescrição (LEAD) (Araújo; Nascimento, 2011; Araújo; Vieira; Monteiro, 2013), um fator importante é a qualidade da segmentação (divisão entre inserções de legenda ou quebra de linha), especialmente a segmentação linguística, feita segundo a sintaxe, tal que o respeito à estrutura dos sintagmas nas quebras de linhas parece facilitar a compreensão dos programas pelos surdos. Este artigo descreve os problemas de segmentação linguística das legendas do filme Virada Radical, propondo ressegmentações. Das 1074 legendas coletadas, 5,4% apresentaram problemas, principalmente nos sintagmas verbais e nominais.

Inserido no campo disciplinar dos Estudos da Tradução, este estudo tem como objetivo principal contrastar um corpus composto por legendas em português do Brasil extraído da série espanhola Gran Hotel. Especificamente, objetiva-se (i) verificar se as legendas seguem as normas vigentes de legendagem; registrar diferenças e (ii) identificar sua natureza, se relacionadas à norma ou à estrutura linguístico-semântica. Por último, (iii) propor soluções para alguns problemas de tradução identificados. Como resultados, averiguou-se que a legenda profissional demonstra maior cuidado no que tange às normas de legendagem e segmentação textual em comparação com a legenda amadora. Esta, por sua vez, foge dos padrões estabelecidos como corretos. Espera-se que este estudo contribua para novas pesquisas no âmbito da tradução para legendagem, campo fértil a ser explorado academicamente no nicho da tradução audiovisual.

Narrative Structure, Function, and Cultural Values in Legends of CentralKalimantan. Research entitled is motivated by the interest of researcher topreserve the legend of the area that is now almost extinct and forgotten by thecommunity. This study aims to describe (1) the structure of narrative in legends ofcentral kalimantan, (2) the function of legend in legendsof central kalimantan, (3)cultural values in legends of central kalimantan. This research used a descriptivemethod. the data source can be from fifteen legends in central kalimantan creationby Prof. Drs. Kumpiady Widen, MA, Ph. D then collected through severaltechniques, classified, analyzed, and concluded. Based on the results of dataanalysis, it can be concluded that of the fifteen legends that have been analyzed,there are ten local legends and five individual legends. Based on analysis of thenarrative structure, the five narrative stages are found from the fifteen legends.Based on analysis of legend’s function, the six functions of legend used as theory inthis study, only found four functions of legend, the function of legend to help theeducation of young people, increase feelings of solidarity of group, socialsanctions for people who behave well or punish, and last as a means of socialcriticism. based on analysis of the cultural values contained in these fifteen legendsfound five cultural values, namely: the cultural values of human life, the culturalvalues of human works, the cultural values of human perceptions of time, thecultural values of the human view of nature and the latter are cultural valueshuman relationships with others. Key words: naration structure, legendary function, culture values Abstrak Struktur Narasi, Fungsi, dan Nilai Budaya dalam Kumpulan Legenda diKalimantan Tengah. Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh ketertarikan penelitiuntuk melestarikan legenda daerah yang sekarang sudah hampir punah dandilupakan oleh masyarakat. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan (1) Strukturnarasi dalam kumpulan legenda di Kalimantan Tengah (2) Fungsi legenda dalamkumpulan legenda di Kalimantan Tengah (3) Nilai Budaya dalam kumpulanlegenda di Kalimantan Tengah. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif. Sumber data didapat dari lima belas legenda yang ada di Kalimantan Tengahkarya Prof. Drs. Kumpiady Widen, MA, Ph. D. Berdasarkan analisis mengenaistruktur narasi, kelima tahap narasi ditemukan dari lima belas legenda tersebut.Berdasarkan analisis mengenai fungsi legenda, dari enam fungsi legenda yang dijadikan teori dalam penelitian ini hanya ditemukan empat fungsi legenda.Berdasarkan analisis mengenai nilai budaya yang terkandung dalam kelima belaslegenda tersebut ditemukan lima nilai budaya, yaitu nilai budaya tentang hidupmanusia, nilai budaya tentang karya manusia, nilai budaya persepsi manusiatentang waktu, nilai budaya pandangan manusia terhadap alam dan yang terakhirnilai budaya hubungan manusia dengan sesama. To its admirers, the Legenda aurea is a powerful expression of medieval belief. To the evangelical pamphleteers of early modern England, it was a symbol of all the failings of unreformed religion. For historians, it is a convenient shorthand for popular hagiography before the Reformation. These readings, however, understate the Legenda's often ambiguous place in early modern devotional life. This article seeks to complicate the Legenda's history in late medieval and early modern England. It argues that the concept and the act of translation rendered Jacobus's text more complex than the historiographical shorthand allows. Translation contributed to the Legenda's power as a devotional work, was a means by which it found its use, impact and wide audience, and was central to how reformers remembered both the text itself and its author. The translated Legenda was not the exception to the narrative of the long Reformation, but an emblem of it.

Este artigo pretende analisar como é feita a tradução do humor por meio das legendas em português da série The Office e como a revisão pode ajudar para que a legenda capte o máximo possível do contexto de cada cena. Foram feitas análises sobre caracterizações de tradução, humor e revisão, apenas para esboçar o assunto rapidamente e introduzir como o humor é abordado em The Office e mais especificamente, como ele é abordado através das legendas dos DVDs brasileiros da série. Por fim, foi feita uma análise de cenas específicas, observando se as legendas conseguem ou não transmitir sua mensagem para o telespectador em um curto espaço de tempo e sugestões de maneiras que possam melhorar, para mostrar como a revisão pode ajudar nesse aspecto específico, de modo a manter a fidelidade de significado entre a tradução e o diálogo original.

Tutkimukseni primaarilähteenä on Maria Vaaran Likaiset legendat. Teos on omaelämäkerrallinen kuvaus mielen sairaudesta, skitsofreniasta. Tutkimukseni aluksi kerron tutkimukseni tekoajankohdan kontekstista, jonka lisäksi taustoitan myös teoksen ilmestymisajankohdan kirjallisen kentän tapahtumia ja mielisairaiden hoidon pääpiirteitä. Tutkimuksessani konstruoin Vaaran teoksen hulluuden poetiikkaa, eli sitä, miten teoksessa on luotu hulluuden kuvausta kirjallisin keinoin. Hulluus värittää teosta kokonaisvaltaisesti: se on näkyvillä monipuolisesti niin teoksen muodossa kuin sisällössäkin. Tutkimuksessani analysoin teoksen peritekstit, jotka ohjaavat lukijan tulkintaa hulluuden kuvausta kohti. Myös hulluuteen liittyvä aihesanasto ankkuroi lukijan tulkintaa. Käsittelen tutkimuksessani kohdeteokseni päähenkilön osakseen saamaa stigmaa. Läpi tutkimukseni olen pitänyt eettiset kysymykset erityisen paljon pinnalla ajattelussani. Tutkimukseni keskiössä ovat päähenkilö Marian kokemat harhat sekä niiden kategorisointi ja tulkinta. Olen jakanut harhoja käsittelevän luvun viiteen alalukuun. Ensimmäinen alaluku käsittelee Raamattuun viittaavia hahmoja ja irrallisia, toinen alaluku ajallisia ja tilallisia siirtymiä sekä muodonmuutoksia, ja kolmas alaluku luontoharhoja ja personifikaatioita. Neljännessä alaluvussa käsittelen teoksen intertekstuaalisuutta ja yhteisen merkityspinnan hakemista. Viidennessä alaluvussa kokoan merkityksiä yhteen ja kokoan tulkintojani siitä, mitä ovat hulluuden poetiikka ja valta tässä teoksessa. Viimeisessä käsittelyluvussa analysoin teoksen värisymboliikkaa. Hulluuden lisäksi tutkimukseni toinen pääteema on valta ja sen ilmentymät kohdeteoksessani. Valta-aktit olen jakanut teoksen sisäisiin ja ulkoisiin tekijöihin. Ulkopuolista valtaa käyttävät esimerkiksi teoksen lukijat. Sisäistä valtaa käyttävät olen jaotellut teoksen sisäisiin mutta Marian ulkopuolisiin hahmoihin sekä Marian sisäisiin valtasuhteisiin. Ulkopuolen ja sisäpuolen välillä vallankäyttäjinä toimivat lisäksi yhteiskunta ja biovalta. Marian sisäisiä valtasuhteita olen analysoinut Sigmund Freudin psyykkisen persoonan jäsentymisen käsitteillä; tiedostamattomalla, minällä ja yliminällä. Lisäksi olen käyttänyt analyysissani Freudin unien tulkintaan liittyviä ilmiasuisen ja piilevän merkityksen käsitteitä. Vallan ja biovallan käsitteet nojaavat työssäni Michel Foucault’n teoretisointiin. Tutkimuksessani olen pyrkinyt käsittelemään teosta mahdollisimman laajalla otteella, mutta siitä huolimatta jatkotutkimusaiheita jäi valtavasti. Esimerkiksi yleisemmän hulluuden poetiikan konstruoiminen suomalaisista hulluutta kuvaavista teoksista olisi erittäin mielenkiintoista. Sekä kohdeteokseni analyysi että tutkimuskirjallisuus kertovat siitä, että hulluus toimii yhteiskunnan peilinä, ja siitä, että skitsofrenia on oikeastaan ymmärtämättömyyden ja yhteiskunnan sairaus. Käsitykset hulluudesta, todellisuudesta ja normaaliudesta ovat aina kontekstisidonnaisia ja muuttuvia. Vielä jääkin nähtäväksi, luetaanko Likaisia legendoja tulevaisuudessa hulluuden kuvauksena.

This study was designed to identify recurring themes in Civil War legends that are told in reference to antebellum homes in regions of Southwest Virginia. Existing literature indicates that collecting these legends is an important task because doing so helps others to better understand the community of legend-tellers. Previous research has also indicated that legends form a type of American mythology with reveals the way the legend-tellers perceive the specific subject they describe in the legends. Eight historic homes were visited in six southwestern counties of Virginia. Qualitative data were collected from a purposive sample of 12 participants who lived in these houses, previously lived in an historic house, or worked in an historic house museum. Each house was chosen as a site of inquiry because it has some significance for those interested in the Civil War or because it represents typical houses in similar southwestern Virginian communities during the Civil War era. In-depth interviews were the sole means of data collection and provided detailed and unlimited legends used to identify themes. The data were collected analyzed using a multiple case study approach. The findings from this study indicate that Civil War legends are being told in reference to antebellum homes in Southwest Virginia. Additionally, the tellers of the legends have common thoughts about the Civil War. The three major conclusions made in this study are (1) northern soldiers were aggressors during the Civil War; (2) southerners were strong during the Civil War; and (3) ghosts and ghostly activity serve as reminders of the Civil War. By continuing to share these legends, the tellers indicate their own perspectives of the Civil War as well as the perspectives of those who originate the legends. The legend-tellers also provide insight into the culture of today's southwestern Virginians as well as the Civil War era southwestern Virginians.

This thesis explores modalities in two hagiographical collections from the late Middle Ages; the Legenda Aurea and the Gilte Legende by drawing inspiration from post-colonial hybridity theories.. It conducts a close textual analysis by studying the use of pronouns in five saints’ legends where female saints transcend traditional gender identities and become men, and focuses on how they transcend, live as men, and die. The study concludes that the use of pronouns is fluid in the Latin Legenda Aurea, while the Middle English Gilte Legende has more female pronouns and additions to the texts where the female identity of the saints is emphasised. This is interpreted as a sign of the feminisation of religious language in Europe during the late Middle Ages, and viewed parallel with the increase of holy women at that time. By doing this, it underlines the importance of new words and concepts when describing and understanding medieval views on gender.

This diploma thesis deals with the exploration and comparison of symbol keys used for official maps of European countries. The theoretical part deals mainly with legends and cartographic symbols as a key element of the thesis. Then an assessment of available symbol systems and comparison of map symbols used in symbol systems for the official map of the Czech Republic is made. In the conclusion there is drawn proposal for symbol system applicable to maps of all European countries.

The Steiner/Waldorf school movement is currently one of the fastest growing independent school movements internationally. In several countries it seems to have developed into the most popular form of alternative education. South Africa has 17 Waldorf schools and one full-time teacher training facility. This study investigated the interpretation and implementation of the Parzival main lesson within the wider context of the Waldorf curriculum. The main lesson system is an essential constituent of the Waldorf curriculum. Most academic subjects in a Waldorf school are taught in a three- or four-week main lesson block. The main lesson occupies the first two hours of the school day. A main lesson consists of a particular three-part structure, and the main lesson book is the keystone to the Waldorf evaluative process. The Parzival main lesson is specifically taught in Class 11, and most Waldorf schools consider it as one of the most important main lessons in the high school. The interpretivist model was ideally suited to this research. The investigation was conducted as a multiple case study, and the main source of data was provided by classroom observation. This was supported by interviews and classroom artifacts. The study involved two South African Waldorf schools at which the Parzival main lesson is taught. This main lesson is presented at only three South African Waldorf schools. I teach at the remaining school, and therefore conducted my research at the other two schools. The teachers who facilitated the Parzival main lesson, as well as the Class students at the selected schools voluntarily participated in the research. My research findings indicate that the possibility exists for the teacher to exercise a certain degree of freedom and creativity within the parameters of Waldorf methodology and the Waldorf curriculum. The study also determines that teachers often find it difficult to integrate the three-part structure, as indicated by Waldorf methodology, in a single main lesson. Furthermore, my research establishes that main lesson books can indeed serve as both text and as an assessment tool. I therefore conclude and maintain in this study, with particular reference to the Parzival main lesson, that despite the prescriptive structure of the Waldorf system and Steiner pedagogy, teachers need not necessarily sacrifice their freedom and creativity within the classroom.

A geração automática de legenda de imagem é uma tarefa que consiste em decifrar uma imagem e descrevê-la em frases em linguagem natural. Combina Processamento de Linguagem Natural e Visão Computacional para gerar legendas. Recentemente, os métodos de Deep Learning estão obtendo resultados muito promissores para o problema de geração de legendas. O presente trabalho propôs, com base no modelo NIC (Neural Image Caption), uma combinação de redes neurais convolucionais sobre imagens e rede neural recorrente sobre frases, alinhando-as a um objetivo estruturado de criar a descrição textual das imagens. Os resultados mostraram que o modelo neural proposto foi capaz de aprender o modelo da linguagem sobre o conteúdo da imagem, produzindo descrições precisas na maioria das imagens.

The paper applied a content analysis method to examine how myths and legends have been employed by the promotional organization in portraying New Zealand on the official tourism website. The assessment of the website uncovered six main legends which have been presented in the promotion of New Zealand to potential tourists. These traditional tales have been incorporated into the website chiefly as part of Maori heritage attributes in which purakau (the Maori term for legends) represents among crucial aspects in understanding their worldviews and cultural identities. Legends narrating fishing voyages involving demi gods offers a mythological explanation of the origin of the geological formation of islands of New Zealand were presented more than once on the website. Among the legends presented to readers on the websites encompass stories of Tane Mahuta, which depicts the tale of the sky father, the earth mother, and the creation of the world of light that humans live in today. Another unique legend, Paikea the whale rider, is featured as part of the description of a whale-watching attraction in Kaikoura, Christchurch. The overall analysis uncovered that legendary tales are incorporated into the website as the part historical origin of Maori people and in the promotion of several tourist attractions in New Zealand. From a tourism perspective, the representation of these tales enhances the appeal of destinations and make them stand out to visitors. The inclusion of the purakau offers tourists a deeper understanding of the cultural heritage of this country. Furthermore, Maori worldviews on the creation of the universe and formation of the natural environment are transpired. It is noticeable through these legends that Maori people strongly respect their ancestors and highly appreciated natural resources. Finally, the emphasis on environmental conservation and sustainability as ingrained in the tales further supported the overall promotional tagline of 100% Pure New Zealand and the inclusion of Tiaki Promise a commitment to care for New Zealand, for now, and for future generations on the official tourism website.

In this paper we study space- and time-fractional diffusion equations called Fractional Legendre-Pearson Diffusion Equations (FLPDEs) in finite space interval. We define the space fractional part using Fractional Legendre Operators and the time fractional part using Fractional Caputo derivative. We consider both the standard and symmetrized versions of FLPDEs. For both equations, we use the method of integral Legendre transform and inverse integral Legendre transform to solve the two equations. The solutions are given in the form of infinite series containing Legendre polynomials dependent on the space variable and Mittag-Leffler functions dependent on time. We demonstrate that these series are convergent. The simplicity with which the solutions of the FLPDEs are obtained in closed form should initiate further research in this field.

The dichotomy Carl Dahlhaus-Hans Heinrich Eggebrecht appears to be legendary for West German musicology. It has been quite common to assume that since the 1960s and even after Dahlhaus’ death in 1989, musicologists have been very strongly oriented towards these two persons, but actually only either Dahlhaus or Eggebrecht. But can such a legend be verified in information technology? How, if necessary, can one grasp and make understandable academic networks? We have searched the entire MGG-Online for references to the names of Dahlhaus and Eggebrecht, we looked at Festschriften dedicated to Dahlhaus or Eggebrecht with regard to the persons who are marked in the texts/books as important for the two professors (also ‘pupils’, assistants, students etc.). All professional cooperations manifested through publications were also considered, including persons whose texts were edited by Dahlhaus or Eggebrecht. These data were converted into the format of a graph database and visualized. The resulting graph shows a polarized network but a small group with connections to both lead figures, too. Eggebrecht’s network reveals a remarkable gap regarding connections to members of his own generation. Dahlhaus’ personal network seems to be significantly bigger but less intense regarding the relation quality. The findings exemplify the possibilities and limitations of the evaluation of historical data by graph database technologies.

The neoclassical market model still has a decisive influence on important economic policy decisions today. A central role in this model is played by the formation of equilibrium prices, where aggregate supply functions and aggregate demand functions meet. We examine whether equilibrium prices are actually formed. For this purpose, we analyse 2,217 prices for homogeneous products that were collected by students between October 2020 and May 2022 in stationary and online retail. In 143 of 146 cases, no equilibrium price is found. The percentage price range is regularly over 100%. The presumed steering function of an equilibrium price does not materialise. The establishment of market mechanisms for the efficient solution of economic problems must therefore be questioned.
