A common problem for people with disabilities, particularly those who rely on mobility devices, is learning to navigate a new environment. This is especially troublesome for students who are attending a new university and need to figure out how to get from one place to another. All Together Now is a mobile multi-player cooperative game developed for two purposes. First, the game, developed by two computer scientists and a disability studies scholar, is intended to give disabled students a fun way to learn their way around campus, learn how to report accessibility issues on that campus, and make friends with people who have similar disabilities. Second, the game can be used as a way of fostering awareness and advocacy among students without disabilities, by having them work in teams where one member is someone with a disability that causes them to rely on mobility devices. This article describes the implementation of the game within a disability studies course and the results of two pilot tests, with both disabled and non-disabled participants.

One of the encouraging signs on the educational landscape just now is a renewed interest in teaching. We seem to be remembering again that knowledge and thinking about knowledge do not come automatically. If we ask ourselves: what is the very best teaching or learning experience we have ever had, chances are the answer will not be some time when we sat and listened to even a very great lecturer, but it will be a time when something so inspired our interest as to overcome the natural human tendency to inertia, and we went searching for answers. And the reason we remember those moments favorably is because we come out of such experiences feeling more competent to learn what we need to learn. It is just such learning experiences that start people on the road to a lifetime career, or that give rise to significant new ideas.

The Covid-19 pandemic has become a world problem now. The pandemic has affeected a lot of core sectors including the education sector. Students are not able to go to school to study and have to do a social distancing by staying at home. What the government did so that students will still be able to study at home is by developing a long-distance learning media. In this research, we will get to know more about how students in China learn mathematics at home and their learning attitude towards the learning video. This research will use a qualitative and quantitative research method. The researchers gave out questionnaires to 408 students in Guangxi province, China. The researchers also did an interview on the parents and students to know the advantages and disadvantages of using the learning video during this covid-19 pandemic. The research result shows that there is a good student learning attidude towards the learning video. Students feel that the learning video is very interesting yet effective as they were able to understand the concept taught.

Join us for an in-depth account of the history and development of contract cheating in Canada over the past 50+ years. Learn about the one and only (failed) attempt at legislation to make ghostwritten essays and exams illegal in Canada. Get the details on a criminal case in the 1980s, noted as being the first of its kind in Canada, and possibly the Commonwealth, that made history when an essay mill owner and his wife were charged with fraud and conspiracy. The case was dismissed by the judge, leaving the contract cheating industry to flourish in Canada, which it has done with a vengeance. Then learn about an exposé in a major US magazine in the 1990s that presented in-details about the experiences of writers who supplied services to the contact cheating industry. Now that we are in the 21st century, find out what’s being done across the country today to take action against contract cheating. I will share previously undiscovered evidence and insights that shows how the contract cheating industry has been proliferating in Canada for at least half a century. Even if you thought you knew about contract cheating in Canada, you’ll almost certainly learn something new in this session. The content of this session is drawn from Eaton’s book chapter on contract cheating in the forthcoming edited volume, Academic Integrity in Canada: An Enduring and Essential Challenge (Eaton & Christensen Hughes) that involved over a thousand hours of historical research and digging into archival material to uncover that the contract cheating industry in Canada has been operating successfully for longer than most of us ever realized. I conclude with strong calls to action for educators, advocates, and policy makers.

At the beginning of spiritual ascent, there are three main ways for a modern man: the direct path of lessons, the way to help someone, the information path. Now people should learn not to walk through troubles, direct lessons, when a person changes only directly by contacting the sources of suffering. Here he learns through the extreme options of lessons, the most difficult. On the first path, something becomes an event, and people must learn to celebrate events. This is the way of rules, going from sign to sign. Everything along the way is work. One must learn to accept this. The gift itself is to learn how to work to make it easier to work. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many aspects of life, and language learning is no exception. Lockdowns and restrictions led to digital tools such as online platforms, virtual classrooms, video conferencing, and interactive games becoming essential for language teaching. It was a difficult period for teachers and learners, however, who had to adapt overnight to a digital landscape unknown to most of them. The challenges of this period have also created the opportunity for education systems to adjust to new digital settings. This paper discusses the benefits and challenges associated with the use of digital tools in language teaching after the COVID-19 lockdowns, and especially what the teachers learned and tried to transfer after returning to a face-to-face instructional modality. The data were collected through an e-questionnaire. We sought to understand how teachers adjusted their practice, what steps they took to address knowledge gaps regarding possible digital resources, and how they transferred that knowledge to in-person classes. Teachers experienced many difficulties and doubts about resources, methods, and learning outcomes, particularly about students’ learning of foreign language communication skills. We also noticed that only half of them tried to continue using digital tools in their teaching practice after the lockdowns ended.

A dominant hallmark of living systems is their ability to adapt to changes in the environment by learning and evolving. Nature does this so superbly that intensive research efforts are now attempting to mimic biological processes. Initially this biomimicry involved developing synthetic methods to generate complex bioactive natural products. Recent work is attempting to understand how molecular machines operate so their principles can be copied, and learning how to employ biomimetic evolution and learning methods to solve complex problems in science, medicine and engineering. Automation, robotics, artificial intelligence, and evolutionary algorithms are now converging to generate what might broadly be called in silico-based adaptive evolution of materials. These methods are being applied to organic chemistry to systematize reactions, create synthesis robots to carry out unit operations, and to devise closed loop flow self-optimizing chemical synthesis systems. Most scientific innovations and technologies pass through the well-known “S curve”, with slow beginning, an almost exponential growth in capability, and a stable applications period. Adaptive, evolving, machine learning-based molecular design and optimization methods are approaching the period of very rapid growth and their impact is already being described as potentially disruptive. This paper describes new developments in biomimetic adaptive, evolving, learning computational molecular design methods and their potential impacts in chemistry, engineering, and medicine.

Mackintosh and his collaborators put forward an account of perceptual learning effects based, in part, on learned changes in stimulus salience. In the workshop held to mark Mackintosh’s retirement, and published as a special issue of this journal, Hall discussed Mackintosh’s theory and proposed his own alternative account. We now want to take the story forward in the light of findings and theoretical perspectives that have emerged since then. Specifically, we will argue that neither Mackintosh nor Hall was correct in his account of the principles that govern how changes in salience occur. Both supposed (in different ways) that such changes depend on the way in which the stimulus (or stimulus element) is predicted by another event. In contrast, theories of attentional learning have stressed the notion that changes in the properties of a stimulus might depend on the way in which it predicts its consequences. These theories have been concerned with attention-for-learning (associability). We now consider how the general principle they both employ might be relevant to the other forms of attention (for perception and for performance) that are, we will argue, critical for the perceptual learning effect.

There is now a growing tendency among Indonesian people to introduce English to children starting from the early age, through either formal or informal education. This can be seen from the mushrooming of bilingual and international schools where English is used as the language of instruction as well as the increasing number of English courses aimed especially for children. Sometimes people hold a misconception regarding teaching English for young learners, in which they believe that the earlier the kids learn a foreign language, the better it will be. As a matter of fact, this assumption is not completely true. Only when handled with care will the teaching of foreign language to young learners succeed as expected? Otherwise, this will not gain a significant effect on children’s language development. This paper will elaborate some principles on how young learners learn a foreign language, which should be the foundation of the way the teaching English to young learners is conducted. Some theories on how children learn will be drawn on, followed by a discussion on the pedagogical implications. This paper is expected to give insights to English teachers in general and teachers of English for young learners in particular, about the importance of taking into account the aspects related to the way young learners learn in designing their teaching learning process.

Abstract John Urry's legacy is rich and reaches beyond the sociology of mobility. This article follows up on Urry's interest in exploring possible mobile futures by connecting the field of mobilities research to design. “Mobilities design” has emerged as a subbranch of mobilities research during the last decade. By looking into the critical-creative ways in which designers explore potential futures, mobilities research may indeed learn fruitful lessons of future imagination. Specifically, the article illustrates how such “designerly ways of thinking” add new insight when exploring “what the future is,” which Urry set out to do as the last thing of his career.

You are a medical student in 1820, training in anatomy has now become a prerequisite to graduation but there are limited cadavers available for dissection. Could you be a body snatcher? What about if you only took unclaimed bodies? What if you didn’t actually excavate, just helped drive the wagon? What would be your conditions before you would turn to a life of crime? Keep in mind that just by “borrowing” the occasional body you would provide yourself with ample opportunities to learn anatomy and also easily afford your tuition. If you do decide to go ahead and become a body snatcher you’re going to have to learn the classic modus operandi employed by the best in the business. First of all you want to do some daytime reconnaissance by attending the burial to see if any booby traps are being set for potential body snatchers. Next, you return at night with a wagon and drop two men off at the burial site. They then start digging a 3’X3’ hole until they hit the coffin. The body is carefully extracted and any identifying clothing or jewelry is removed and put back in the coffin before being reburied. Now you might be worried about retribution but you really don’t have much to fear. Townsfolk have been known to protest in front of medical schools but you’d have to deal with this even if you weren’t a body snatcher. If you end up going to court the worst that would happen is a fine that you could easily pay off by stealing another body or two. Highet MJ. 2005. AbstractThis paper discusses how converging methods may form a powerful tool in unraveling the neurobiology of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Integrating findings from multiple disciplines can inform us on how different neurobiological and cognitive mechanisms tie together in both typical and atypical development. Examples are discussed of this approach: combining family and genetic approaches with anatomical neuroimaging illustrates how mapping familial effects can bring us closer to understanding the neurobiology of ADHD. Functional neuroimaging has convincingly linked cognitive problems in this disorder with frontostriatal functioning, but also shows that other systems may be involved in some of the symptoms of ADHD. Combining these findings has suggested new avenues for investigation, such as the role of frontocerebellar networks. Furthermore, findings may have practical applications: this paper discusses an example of how converging evidence of striatal dysregulation in ADHD suggests possible directions for treatment that are now being explored in functional imaging studies.

OVERVIEW Nearly 30 years after the discovery of the first exoplanet around a main sequence star, thousands of planets have now been confirmed. These discoveries have completely revolutionized our understanding of planetary systems, revealing types of planets that do not exist in our solar system but are common in extrasolar systems, and a wide range of system architectures. Our solar system is clearly not the default for planetary systems. The community is now moving beyond basic characterization of exoplanets (mass, radius, and orbits) towards a deeper characterization of their atmospheres and even surfaces. With improved observational capabilities there is potential to now probe the geology of rocky exoplanets; this raises the possibility of an analogous revolution in our understanding of rocky planet evolution. However, characterizing the geology or geological processes occurring on rocky exoplanets is a major challenge, even with next generation telescopes. This chapter reviews what we may be able to accomplish with these efforts in the near-term and long-term. In the near-term, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is revealing which rocky planets lose versus retain their atmospheres. This chapter discusses the implications of such discoveries, including how even planets with no or minimal atmospheres can still provide constraints on surface geology and long-term geological evolution. Longer-term possibilities are then reviewed, including whether the hypothesis of climate stabilization by the carbonate–silicate cycle can be tested by next generation telescopes. New modeling strategies sweeping through ranges of possibly evolutionary scenarios will be needed to use the current and future observations to constrain rocky exoplanet geology and evolution.

Machine learning is a branch of computer science that enables computers to learn without being explicitly programmed. One of the most exciting technologies that one has ever encountered is machine learning. As the name implies, it provides the computer with the ability to learn, which makes it more human-like. Machine learning is now employed in a variety of applications, including self-driving cars, personal assistants such as Cortana, Alexa, and Siri, and security technologies such as face recognition. Developers of mobile applications are increasingly being pushed to include machine learning technology in their apps. This is unfamiliar territory for many of them. In this research paper, we will look at how machine learning relates to AI in this context, with an emphasis on application developers. This paper demonstrates different machine learning types, frameworks, and tools available on the market and how to use them to create the statistical models needed to use them in mobile applications without having to learn more about the complexity of algorithms and how they train and learn models. Also, this article covers the basic architectures that mobile applications can leverage to work with machine learning.

Abstract: This paper studies how and why Walter Scott's Waverley Novels remain outside of the canon despite a burgeoning Scott studies subfield on the rise in the literary studies community. The article identifies the disconnect between Scott scholarship and Scott pedagogy as a way into a larger set of problems involving how late nineteenth-century and modernist aesthetics set enduring standards for "good writing." If we take Scott's de-canonization as a test case, we gain insight into how literary interiority—itself a carefully disguised construct—obfuscates and displaces older standards of writerly quality and learn how to find new, twenty-first-century applications for now forgotten novels.

Considering whether law students receive a legal education that is meaningful and relevant to them raises interesting questions about what education is, what it's for, how we teach, how we learn and, essentially, how we know what we know. This article examines ideology and the law lecturer and student, and how these intersect, interact and conflict to inform the teaching, learning and understanding of law. These are not inconsequential questions considering the range of diversity among students now studying law. These issues are explored by examining the purposes of legal education in light of the overall objectives of higher education. The article then looks at the impact of ideology on our understanding of the world in general and of law in particular, and how ideology influences how we learn and what we learn. The manner in which ideology influences a particular interpretation of information, and especially legal information, is explored, as are the consequences to those outside that ideological and interpretive commonality. Thus, it is argued that some groups of students are excluded from a legal education that is meaningful and relevant to them. Lastly, the article considers ways in which law may be understood and taught otherwise to reflect both our students' reality and the social context in which law operates.

At the beginning of a course held at Helsinki University in 2000, Julianna Szendrei asked us, Finnish teachers the question: Who do we want to get to the finish line with – the few best pupils, „the average” or every single pupil, even if there will be some who will have to wear roller skates to get there. According to Eszter C. Neményi, who introduced all her courses with this, the teachers are driven by two kinds of love in their work: the love of children and the love of mathematics. Now, these thoughts are important and familiar to us, Finnish teachers as well. It is exactly the similar values, the similar view on teaching that aroused our interest: How do you teach here in Hungary? What novelties could we learn from you? This was the situation in 2000. Now we are here to tell you about Finnish mathematics teaching and about what we learnt from you, apart from the fact that our school culture is somewhat different from yours, how we are proceeding in the direction you set for us, and how we have formed the seven principles of Varga-Neményi to „our image”.

Understanding how machines learn is critical for children to develop useful mental models for exploring artificial intelligence (AI) and smart devices that they now frequently interact with. Although children are very familiar with having conversations with conversational agents like Siri and Alexa, children often have limited knowledge about AI and machine learning. We leverage their existing familiarity and present Zhorai, a conversational platform and curriculum designed to help young children understand how machines learn. Children ages eight to eleven train an agent through conversation and understand how the knowledge is represented using visualizations. This paper describes how we designed the curriculum and evaluated its effectiveness with 14 children in small groups. We found that the conversational aspect of the platform increased engagement during learning and the novel visualizations helped make machine knowledge understandable. As a result, we make recommendations for future iterations of Zhorai and approaches for teaching AI to children.

AbstractIt often comes as a surprise to learn that most contemporary Americans who think of themselves as “Irish” are, in fact, Protestant, not Catholic. While commentators generally agree that these Protestant Irish-Americans are descended mainly from the Irish who settled in the United States prior to the Famine, the story of how they became the Protestants they are is—this article argues—more complicated than first appears. To understand that story, however, one must correct for two historiographical biases. The first has to do with the presumed religiosity of the so-called “Scotch-Irish” in the pre-Famine period; the second involves taking “being Irish” into account in the post-Famine period only with dealing with Catholics, not Protestants. Once these biases are corrected, however, it becomes possible to develop an argument that simultaneously does two things: it provides a new perspective on the contribution made by the Irish (generally) to the rise of the Methodists and Baptists in the early nineteenth century, and it helps us to understand why so many American Protestants continue to retain an Irish identity despite the fact that their link to Ireland is now almost two centuries in the past.

Education has always been a topic of great concern and good teaching methods help students to learn better. Any teaching mode points to and accomplishes certain teaching objectives. Traditional teaching models are elaborated from the perspective of how teachers teach, ignoring the issue of how students learn. The development trend of modern teaching models is to attach importance to the subjectivity of students in teaching activities, to their participation in teaching and to the rational design of 'teaching' and 'learning' activities according to the needs of teaching. There are now many teaching methods in schools, each with its own characteristics and drawbacks. Whether a teaching model is suitable for student learning or whether it will be the future of education depends on what students learn from it and what people say about it. There are currently four representative teaching methods that are suitable for students, namely face-to-face teaching, which is the oldest mode of teaching. There is also online teaching, graded teaching and flipped classrooms. The article analyses the advantages and disadvantages of the different models for teaching purpose and finally chooses the one that is most suitable for university students to learn English.

It is easier than ever for researchers to disseminate and report their findings once the job of collecting data and formulating a conclusion is complete. The process of research, scholarship, and publication is central to higher education (Mason et al., 2021). However, the existing model of research dissemination is far from adequate, as it does not meet the demands of the more competitive side of academia; journal publications and conference participation are no longer sufficient to build and establish professional reputations (Relojo-Howell, 2021a). Both your academic colleagues and the broader lay audience of those seeking to learn more about your specific area of study now have significantly more tools at their disposal to find the information they are looking for. As a result, researchers need to work harder at establishing themselves as respected professionals in their respective fields through a broader range of networking activities, including creating an online presence where their work can be found quickly and efficiently.

Technology is undoubtedly having a major impact on every aspect of our lives and that includes today’s learning environments. It is shaping the way in which students learn, teachers deliver material and the way in which we design spaces for future learning opportunities. It is said that schools aren’t just investing in computer stations and keyboards and we are witness to the fact, based on our planning and design work, and that they are quickly embracing the “constant contact” trends that have changed our global culture. As technology continues to evolve, it brings with it new opportunities and challenges for educators and students. Social networking is a great example of technology that can help — or hinder — education, depending on how it is used and integrated into teaching plans. Privacy and security are two concerns that can come with using social networking in the classroom. It can also become a distraction to students, or even a tool used for bullying. Learning spaces now, more than ever, are being designed to help with communication and information sharing. From tablets used to asking kids to “raise their hands” virtually, to viewing a lecture via Skype or FaceTime, the traditional four walls and a chalkboard are transforming rapidly. According to a recent USA Today article, a New York-based educational technology startup released the first device, an Androidpowered touchscreen tablet, “designed for kids both to take to school and bring home. For sale only to schools for now, the Amplify tablet comes pre-loaded with virtually everything a student will encounter during the school day, including all the textbooks, lessons, tests and e-books she might be assigned. ”

The relationship between globalisation, sovereignty, power and security is now more inextricably linked in the normally competing scholarly literatures of International Relations than at any time in the recent past. Trends in contemporary world order can only be understood by an examination of the changing nature of the relationship between sovereignty and security under conditions of economic globalisation. The context in which such a sweeping statement can be made is, of course, the world since 9/11. This article presents paradoxes of global interdependence to argue that the present world order has already been broken for years and that globalisation has led us into an even more chaotic era, in which the leading world powers and institutions only pretend they can cope. Instead of working through interdependence, the world is becoming increasingly divided through different power centres like the US, Europe and China. Rather than offering one-off solutions and grand-bargains for the inequalities of power in the globalised world, this essay prescribes the need to improve global diplomatic endeavours as nations, corporations, or faiths can only learn to respect one another’s power and values by sharing and negotiating knowledge.

How academic motivation affects how well students do in English language classes and how different types of motivation in educational settings help students feel better about English. Motivation is seen as one of the most important parts of learning a language well. The information for this study will come from the primary schools in the district of D.G. Khan. This study is mostly about finding out what kind of and how much motivation there is to learn English. The quantitative method used with the help of a teacher questionnaire and a student T-test. Before applying the motivational factors, there was a pre-test, and then there was a post-test with two groups. 1. Control group 2. Experimental group. Academic motivation is a mix of a person's personal goals, study habits, socioeconomic factors and attitude towards school. The subscales of the motivation scale are: intrinsic goal orientation, extrinsic goal orientation, task value, control of learning beliefs, self-efficacy for learning and performance, and test anxiety. The results show that the students who took part in the study were highly motivated to learn English and were motivated more by what they could get out of it. This study will show how students' motivation to learn can help them feel better about themselves and also help them do well in school.

Spanish speakers tend to perceive an illusory [e] preceding word-initial [s]-consonant sequences, e.g., perceiving [stið] as [estið] (Cuetos, Hallé, Domínguez & Segui, 2011), but this illusion is weaker for Spanish speakers who know English, which lacks the illusion (Carlson, Goldrick, Blasingame & Fink, 2016). The present study aimed to shed light on why this occurs by assessing how a brief interval spent using English impacts performance in Spanish auditory discrimination and lexical decision. Late Spanish–English bilinguals’ pattern of responses largely matched that of monolinguals, but their response times revealed significant differences between monolinguals and bilinguals, and between bilinguals who had just completed tasks in English vs. Spanish. These results suggest that late bilinguals do not simply learn to perceive initial [s]-consonant sequences veridically, but that elements of both their phonotactic systems interact dynamically during speech perception, as listeners work to identify what it was they just heard.

The main topic of conversation between Albania and Great Britain at the moment is illegal immigration. The impact that social media has had on the growth in the number of young Albanians traveling to the British island makes these changes even more intriguing. Apps like Tik Tok, Instagram, or Facebook—these previously underutilized mechanisms have transformed into enormous connecting and influencing tools between criminal organizations that readily recruit young people, allowing the growth of illegal commerce. Information is interactive and available in real time due to today's media. Geographically, connections to the targeted people are present everywhere. By showcasing the efforts of "organized groups" via movies, pictures, or letters, these programs build strong relationships based on trust. We are alluding to the TikTok films of Albanian refugees on boats at the Dover port's border with England, which the British press referred to as a "new form of communication". Social media in this situation helps to establish favorable conditions that encourage illegal immigration. Why this subject? Immigration-related concerns are of great importance right now in our nation and abroad. The "communicative" component now provides these innovations a new dimension. The research method is qualitative. Erl Murati, the editor-in-chief of "Gazeta Shqiptare," Bled Koka, the editor-in-chief of "Syri TV/Syri.net," and Zylyftar Bregu, a media researcher, are among the three media specialists who are interviewed.
