The research applies etnoarcheolgical approach by using some techniques: bibliographical study, observation, and interview. Those collected data are then described, analyzed, interpreted, and concluded. The results show that there are three main livelihood, i.e., processing sagoo, cathing fish (by men), cathing crabs (by men), and gathering seashells (by men). While women’s roles follow the knowledge system of maritime tradition: time, season, wind, and stars. To go to the location of sagoo processing, shrimps and seashells gathering, Waropen women use canoes without leeboard. In local language it is called sewado. Through the roles of Waropen women in maritime tradition, there are some beneficial socio-cultural values, i.e. being religious, corporation, independence, discipline, hard work, creativity, and care to nature.

In this research, the term “maritime” describes issues related to the relationships and activities between humans and the sea. A country with a major maritime region, like Indonesia, can also be referred to as maritime. This serves as an idea of a starting point for a nation seeking for ways to improve its marine education. However, students find it difficult to understand the material due to the use of foreign language that they don’t understand. In order to increase student knowledge and interest, the researcher offers the use of mother tongue. For this study, researcher conduct qualitative research. 25 students from University Maritim Raja Ali Haji (UMRAH) participate in responding the questionnaire. The data indicates that people strongly agree using their mother language is a good way to raise awareness in the maritime environment. Because, it can facilitate their understanding of the subject during the learning process. Besides, students’ motivation in studying maritime education is also greatly influenced by their mother tongue. When teachers utilize their mother tongue fluently and avoid complicating things, students have an easier time processing the material and their enthusiasm in studying about maritime will also rise.

This paper reports the students’ needs in developing a GME instructional course with the following research questions: 1) What is the present level of students’ oral communication apprehension? 2) What are the students’ needs (the learning and the language needs) in learning General Maritime English? The research was conducted at the Akademi Maritim Akademi Indonesia AIPI Makassar. There were 150 students of the nautical department in the academic year 2016-2017 as the primary subjects of this research. The researchers administered questionnaires, conducted interviews and observed exams to collect the data. The results found that the students’ level of oral communication apprehension was high, based on the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). It was also found that there was a high demand for materials that could prepare the students to have good communication skills, in order to be equipped to work in international maritime industries. Most of the students assumed that the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in English are crucial, but they placed productive skills (writing and speaking) as their highest priority. It is concluded that the results of this investigation should be taken into account in developing teaching and learning materials for maritime academy students.

Whether considered as a form of “diplomacy by cities,” as a strategy for small and mid-sized communities to assert their role amidst globalization, or as a means of territorial cooperation, twinnings between municipalities of different countries represent a common and oft celebrated facet of contemporary transnationalization. Sister cities in Louisiana and Canada’s Maritime Provinces play an important part in the transnational networks among populations of the Acadian diaspora, a people “scattered to the wind” in the eighteenth century after mass deportation by British authorities. There are currently 12 such twinnings, and partnerships with the French-speaking world figure prominently in external subnational relations across the Maritimes, especially in New Brunswick. This article examines emerging discourses of diasporic Acadian identity through municipal twinnings between Louisiana and l’Acadie des Maritimes. After a general profile of twinnings in the Maritimes, I analyze the evolution of language used in sister-city agreements before offering examples of sister cities’ unique contribution to a sense of diasporic belonging.

Maritime English is a specific register. Therefore, it requires a specific treatment. This paper implies the restricted aspect of a complex system such as English for specific purpose in the nautical education and profession. The sophisticated system of the maritime English makes it a plain instrument of communication. The opposite "tides" govern the system: creative and economical tendency. The creative side of the maritime language is evident in the forming of new words and meanings, combining of existing units, various metaphors, etc. We have tried to look into certain subregisters within Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) by pointing to the main characteristics. Seaspeak is a vital instrument of communication on board a ship. The importance of English language has always been emphasized, especially the importance of the standardized maritime phrases used in vessel-to-vessel vessel-to-port communication. By trying to encode the Maritime English world, we will look into the structure of Maritime English communication terms and phrases. However, we cannot make artificial borders between Maritime and General English. These two registers intertwine and it is impossible to eliminate Maritime English from General English and vice versa. As far as restricted aspect of Maritime English is concerned, Standard Marine Communication Phrases are used in both ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication.

Oral communication is essential for people’s workplace performance as well as for university students learning English. Speaking fluently is also crucial for maritime academy students prepared to work in industries abroad. Students need to believe in their ability to speak English. For this reason, sound communication skills are necessary for maritime students so they can compete with seafarer or sailor from other countries. The purpose of this research was to identify the level of oral communication apprehension of nautical students of Akademi Maritim Indonesia (Indonesian Maritime Academy) AIPI Makassar. The sample consisted of 10 first year students at nautical of AMI AIPI Makassar. Data was gathered through questionnaires adapted from Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Class Scale (FLCAS). The findings indicated that students were generally apprehensive in EFL oral communication. The students showed the highest apprehension for public speaking. The level of nautical students’ apprehension based on observation and supported by the modified FLCAS were 20% in the low category, 60% in the moderate category, and 20% in the high category. Students in the high apprehension category showed more symptoms than students in the moderate and low apprehension categories.

English language is an integral part of a navigator’s life. And Maritime English language is one of the most important means of professional communication of seafarers because the vast majority of ships have multilingual international crews. In their work, the mariners have to communicate on various topics: professional, domestic or just to keep the conversation going in a multinational crew. Marine professionals need Maritime English at the user’s level and this fact is undisputable and undeniable. The level of English language proficiency depends on the success of the navigator, his career growth, ensuring the safety of navigation. Proficiency in Maritime English is stipulated in a separate line in convention documents (including the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) governing the training of seafarers. The article is devoted to one of the topical problems of the foreign language cadets’ (students’) education of the maritime institutions of higher education, in particular navigators. The concepts of «competence» is briefly characterized. The author provides the definitions of «foreign language communicative competence» given by foreign and Ukrainian scientists. Also the author’s own definition is formulated. There have been presented the main conditions for mastering international communication competence, which is important for the safe and efficient operation of maritime transport, in the process of professional training of future navigators. The main types of speech activities (listening, monologue speech, dialogic speech, writing, reading), which are used for the formation of foreign language communicative competence of future navigators, are analysed. The examples of tasks used at the practical classes by the professional English language teachers of the f Navigation and Ship Handling Chair of Azov Maritime Institute of the National University «Odessa Maritime Academy» are provided in this article. Key words: competence, foreign language communicative competence, speech activity, cadets (students) of maritime institutions of higher education.

Controlled Natural Languages (CNL) are artificial languages that use a subset of the vocabulary, morphological forms and syntactical constructions of a natural language while eliminating its polysemy. In a way, they constitute the bridge between formal languages and natural languages. Therefore, they perform the communicative function of the textual mode while being precise and computable by the machine without any ambiguity. In particular, they can be used to facilitate the population or update of knowledge bases within the framework of a human-machine interface.Since 1971, the French Marine Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOM) issues the French Coast Pilot Books Instructions nautiques , collections of general, nautical and statutory information, intended for use by sailors. These publications aim to supplement charts, in the sense that they provide the mariner with supplemental information not in the chart. They are mandatory for fishing and commercial ships. On the other hand, the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) issued standards providing information about navigational data exchange. Among these standards, one of a particular interest is the universal model of hydrographic data (S-100 standard, January, 2010).This thesis analyses the use of a CNL to represent knowledge contained in the Instructions nautiques. This CNL purpose is to act as a pivot between the writing of the text by the dedicated operator, the production of the printed or online publication, and the interaction with knowledge bases and navigational aid tools. We will focus especially on the interaction between the Instructions nautiques Controlled Natural Language and the corresponding Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC).More generally, this thesis asks the question of the evolution of a CNL and the underlying ontologies involved in the Instructions nautiques project. Instructions nautiques have the particularity of combining both strictness (numerical data, electronic charts, legislation) and a certain amount of flexibility (text writing by human operators, unpredictability of the knowledge to be included due to the evolution of sailors¿ practices and needs). We define in this thesis a dynamic CNL in the same way that dynamic ontologies are defined in particular domains. The language described in this thesis is intended as an interesting contribution for the community involved in CNL. Indeed, it addresses the creation of a CNL for the unexploited domain of maritime navigation, but its hybrid aspects as well through the exploration of the multiple modalities (textual and visual) coexisting in a corpus comprising ENC and their companion texts. The mechanisms of the CNL presented in this thesis, although developed for the domain of the maritime navigation, have the potential to be adapted to other domains using multimodal corpuses. Finally, the benefits in the future of a controlled hybrid language are undeniable: the use of the different modalities in their full potential can be used in many different applications (for example, the exploitation of the visual modality for a 3D extension)

This study is twofold. In the first part, the various avatars of relativity are analysed : physical (size and aesthetics), social moral, diachronic, scientific, and ontological. There follows an investigation of the literary transcription of the theme : first, the conceptualizing structures of duality, ambiguity, proportionality, diversity, then the lexicon - chosen nouns, prepositions, adverbs - and the syntax ; finally, the symbolism, as expressed by the voyage and disease, the imagery, and the emblems of relativity : survival, seafaring and neutral props. In the second part, communication is the subject. A progression leads from verbal languages, i. E. National - real or imaginary - idioms, and jargons, through universal language - mathematics, music, things-, down to languages by signs : body, housing, the court. A chapter is devoted to the safeguarding of communication realized by writing, and to its spasms. It is shown, to conclude, that decoded information allows a biographical reading of the book based on an evaluation of the structural organisation of the events as well as their location and timing. Places where the two themes interlock are pointed and commented upon

Our thesis project is to study maritime specialized terminology in two countries of the Middle East, Syria and Lebanon. It traces the general history of the language and its role in the Arab countries in general and in Syria and Lebanon in particular. This work shows that the evolution of marine sciences has given rise to many new words for the new realities and discoveries. But languages do not have the same tools to meet the scientific challenges, and Arabic shows failed facing the proliferation of all these new terms. It discusses the problems of the Arab scientific term deal with the advance of anglicisms in scientific fields. Arabic creates words by conventional modes of lexical creations, while its scientific terms are mostly created by layer or translation of other languages such as English or French. Research in Syria and Lebanon helped develop a comparison on the teaching of science subjects, and draw conclusions in order to improve education in Syria. In this work, a hundred of terminology records of maritime terms are designed to help translators and terminologists. We have the idea of taking ground on this research to prepare our future project, a trilingual maritime glossary (English, French, Arabic) that encompasses the different terms of maritime activities

The Maritime Silk Road foregrounds the numerous networks that have been woven across oceanic geographies, tying world regions together often far more extensively than land-based routes. On the strength of the new data which has emerged in the last two decades in the form of archaeological findings, as well as new techniques such as GIS modeling, the authors collectively demonstrate the existence of a very early global maritime trade. From architecture to cuisine, and language to clothing, evidence points to early connections both within Asia and between Asia and other continents—well before European explorations of the Global South. The human stories presented here offer insights into both the extent and limits of this global exchange, showing how goods and people traveled vast distances, how they were embedded in regional networks, and how local cultures were shaped as a result.

In this paper, I intend to analyze, from a historical sociolinguistic perspective, the characteristics of Dutch letters written by economic migrants in the late eighteenth century. These letters, which are part of the Leiden Letters as Loot corpora, were confiscated by the English during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War and the American War of Independence (1776–1784). After presenting the method of finding such non-native communication, the linguistic complexity of the letter writers’ regions of origin will be discussed. Focusing on letter writers from the North Frisian islands and East Frisia, their command of Dutch will be determined by examining both deviating features and two Dutch phenomena, the epistolary forms of address and the first person singular object (or oblique) pronouns. Different levels of Dutch proficiency can be attributed to biographical details and may also lead to hypotheses for subsequent research of letter writers of German and Scandinavian origin.

AbstractAmitav Ghosh’s fictional oeuvre makes a major contribution to contemporary sea fiction, particularly that written from a non-Eurocentric perspective. His Ibis trilogy, for instance, paints a vivid picture of historical oceanic mobility in the form of ship journeys and littoral interconnections, centered on and in the Indian Ocean world. This chapter explores one aspect of that mobility, a language “spoken only on the water,” a roving dialect that Ghosh both painstakingly and playfully recreates in the first novel of the trilogy, Sea of Poppies. Laskari is a dialect that was spoken among lascar sailors born of, and borne on, the Indian Ocean. This essay examines the ways in which two dominant areas of Ghosh’s experimentation and interest—language and the sea—intersect in Sea of Poppies, through a focus on laskari as a lingua franca of work. It argues that the intersection can be approached in three ways: through the lens of Ghosh’s production of Indian Ocean space, as a language of South-South mobility; through the lens of sailor speech as a vernacular associated particularly with the craft of sail, participating in a tradition of sea fiction that harks back to Conrad and Melville; and, briefly, through the lens of postcolonial ecology, as a language that has been lost and only partially recovered.

AbstractThe Chapter commences with a study of the text and the application of the 1888 Constantinople Convention by which the Ottoman Empire agreed to apply a special regime to the Suez Canal. The Chapter continues with an analysis of the Egyptian Government's nationalization of the Canal and its statements as to the continued application of the Constantinople Convention. The next issue examined is Egypt's denial of the use of the Canal to Israeli ships and to cargoes bound for Israel. The Chapter gives the Egyptian legal justifications for this embargo based on the rights of belligerency, the language of the 1888 Convention and the 1949 Egypt-Israel Armistice Agreement. The Chapter describes the counter-legal arguments based on the cessation of belligerency, principles of the Law of the Sea, and relevant UN Security Council Resolutions. The Chapter concludes with a description of how the issue with Israel was solved in the 1979 Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty.

Software applications are used extensively in the practice of contemporary naval architecture. This paper describes several naval architecture applications, including ship motion prediction, simulation of replenishment at sea, simulation of launch and recovery, ship operator guidance, and measurement of directional wave spectra using wave radar. Within this context, this paper describes relevant technologies and programming languages that are effective for development of naval architecture software applications. Due to the complexity of naval architecture software, discussion is given on matching of human resources to software development tasks. Software documentation, which can take several forms, is addressed. Verification and validation of software is the final major topic.

Effective and clear communication transfers information, creates an experience in others and causes a reaction. In personal or professional relationships, effective communication is hindered by social and cultural inhomogeneities, and this is the main cause of misunderstandings.Misunderstandings in voice communication have also been identified as the main cause of accidents at sea; although English is used and recognized as an official language for maritime communications, an incorrect pronunciation or accent can cause misunderstanding or even change meaning. Therefore, it is extremely useful to adopt models, protocols and rules aimed at reducing misunderstandings as much as possible.During the years, IMO (International Maritime Organization) has developed the Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP), a set of well-defined sentences, written in a very simplified English, aimed at mitigating the aforementioned problem. Past studies have shown that SMCP is not commonly used and difficulties to pronounce and understand English spoken by different nationalities remains. This paper presents an innovative communication system, developed by the University of Genoa with the collaboration of the Italian Coast Guard in the context the Maritime Interreg project ISIDE, that exploits the possibility of sending text messages through the AIS devices that boats are equipped with.Commercial vessels with a gross tonnage equal to or greater than 300 tons and all passenger ships (regardless of their size) are in fact obliged to equip themselves with the Automatic Identification System (AIS), essentially based on digital VHF radios that can transmit, in an automated and continuous manner, information such as ship name, type of ship, position, course and speed over ground, navigation conditions and other safety-related information.A user-friendly interface has been developed to assist the operator in selecting the appropriate message among those provided by the SMCP standard or alternatively to compose a personalized text, both in the beginning of a new conversation and in the reply to a previously received message. The system can be integrated in professional consoles, standard web interfaces and apps and also on wearable devices such as smart watches. The system takes care of transmitting and receiving information AIS device as the communication channel. The user interface has also been implemented in several languages (i.e., English, Italian, French…) and the received/transmitted SMCP messages are automatically translated into the native language of the operator, thus eliminating language barriers and reducing misunderstandings. The system has been tested during several SAR exercise with the support of the Italian Coast Guard and the results are presented in the full paper. In order to extend the application also to smaller leisure boats, the system will be experimented in the near future using Marine VHF devices able to transmit text messages according the RTCM 12301.1 standard proposed by the Radio Technical Commission for Maritime Services.

The European Maritime Safety Agency uses a systematic approach to analyse safety investigations conducted through the European Marine Casualty Information Platform. In analysing the data of accidents reported over the last ten years, nine overarching safety issues have been identified, with "working methods" being a key concern. Two of the areas identified as problematic under this safety issue are bridge resource management coordination and external communication, which are critical areas as communication between bridge team members and ship-to-ship or ship-to-shore communication issues can lead to collisions and groundings. Language barriers, misunderstandings, and ambiguities may contribute to communication failures with pilots, tugboats, and VTS. Based on qualitative analysis of selected marine accidents, this paper presents the problem of poor communication between bridge team members, with pilots, shore services, and others. In response to the challenge of communication at sea, a current Erasmus+ project DigiMar, which deals specifically with maritime communication, is also presented. The project aims to improve communication skills and safety in shipping through a freely accessible digital teaching tool for routine communication at sea. Using open-access, research-based, and ICT-supported teaching tools, the project will focus on self-directed teaching using instructional videos and chatbots that address routine communication at sea. The learner-centred approach will simulate authentic professional situations and move from simple to complex scenarios. The project also aims to develop the digital skills of different target groups, including university teachers, and thus promote lifelong learning in higher education.

General Arrangement Drawing is a communication language that uses graphics to represent principally: volumes, spaces, compartments, bulkheads, hull forms, decks and main equipment’s. The general arrangement of a vessel can be defined as the allocation of volumes for all the crucial functions/operations, correctly synchronized for position and access. The well-organized operation of a ship depends upon the proper arrangement of each individual volume/space and the most efficient interrelationships among all compartments. It is vital that the general arrangement of a ship be usefully, practically and cost-effectively developed with respect to key factors that influence construction and operation cost, in particular the manpower required to operate the vessel. It is essential for those who are involved in shipbuilding industry to understand new tools for this kind of vessel drawing and know how to draw them, saving time for the rest of the process of ship design. In this paper it is showed, for first time in a conference, a new module dedicated to definition and management the compartment arrangement of a ship. Compartment arrangement of a vessel is based on the definition of its spaces. Each space is represented by its 3D model. Spaces contain further information than the geometric one, been able to set different user attributes to them or to their limits. 3D model of the spaces is generated taken as reference the surfaces of the ship as well as auxiliary geometry. It is also possible the definition of spaces from 2D drawing in a specific definition environment. Finally, this compartment arrangement is available for hydrostatic and stability calculations.

This paper presents an overview of naval dictionaries created in Russia in the 18th–20th centuries, with an emphasis on the number of languages involved and the thematic scope. The multilingual character of these dictionaries can be explained by a range of reasons. Some of them are created on the basis of existing foreign dictionaries translated into Russian; others are the result of interest to collecting linguistic facts in different languages; the authors can also be motivated by the lack of available lexicographic resources in minor languages. 20th century dictionaries are bilingual, with a narrower thematic specialization and focus on specific professional purposes. This development corresponds to the requirements for lexicographic resources and recommendations for lexicographers formulated by V. P. Berkov. These dictionaries are mostly English-Russian ones as English is historically associated with Russian marine science and it is also the language of international maritime communication.

Over the last few decades the teachers of English for specific purposes have been facing growing challenges in designing curricula and teaching materials and in applying contemporary teaching methods aiming to satisfy the communicative needs of the learners. Adding the actual requirements and constraints imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the concept of blended learning based on the use of modern technologies in the teaching process comes to the forefront. The aim of this paper is to show the possibilities of applying some of the latest approaches to language teaching, as well as some of the up-to-date electronic applications for distance learning. The paper rests on the examples taken from teaching Maritime English at the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Kotor. In particular, we demonstrate experience and recommendations for a specific form of team or collaborative teaching called “twinning” and the use of “Spiral” application tested in teaching ESP for the students of Marine Engineering and Nautical Studies and Maritime Transport.
