Trata-se de realizar uma articulação entre as imagens construídas pelo romance Doutor Fausto, de Thomas Mann, e o quadro teórico elaborado pela Escola de Frankfurt, a fim de compor uma interpretação filosoficamente investida do romance e alcançar uma melhor compreensão das ideias da Teoria Crítica. A vida do compositor Adrian Leverkühn, o Fausto de Mann, é narrada pelo amigo e biógrafo Serenus Zeitblom, e essa narrativa revela a identidade fundamental entre o músico e a Alemanha, aproximando suas características e histórias. Nossa abordagem tematiza especialmente a questão da salvação ou condenação da alma do pactário, tratando de matizar essas possibilidades na obra. Elaboramos uma noção de mito comum ao romance e àquele quadro teórico frankfurtiano, apontando sua força de estruturação totalizante, bem como sua inserção em uma dinâmica dialética. A seguir, propomos considerar que todos os elementos do romance que repõe a mitificação apontariam para a condenação do Fausto, enquanto, inversamente, os aspectos da obra que revelam os limites ou se contrapõem à força do mito anunciariam a possibilidade de salvação do pactário. A noção de sofrimento é especialmente importante, pois comparece em ambas as perspectivas. Isso quer dizer que o sofrimento pode ser interpretado tanto como a evidenciação de um destino como se as dores e a infelicidade de Adrian Leverkühn antecipassem a condenação , quanto pode ser compreendido como um sintoma que denuncia o mito como se revelasse a inverdade do destino aparente e as possibilidades do devir. Finalmente, análise da música, um tema central no romance, também revela sua ambivalência, pois ela pode tanto ser a reposição do mito quanto uma crítica ao mundo mitificado.
This work articulates the images constructed by Thomas Manns novel Doctor Faustus with the theoretical framework developed by the Frankfurt School, in order to compose a philosophically invested interpretation of the novel, as well as achieve a better understanding of Critical Theorys ideas. The life of the composer Adrian Leverkühn, Manns Faustus, is narrated by his friend and biographer Serenus Zeitblom, and this narrative reveals the fundamental identity between the musician and Germany, relating their characteristics and histories. Our approach on the novel specially studies the questions of the salvation or the damnation of Fausts soul, trying to precise these possibilities within the work. We develop a notion of myth common to the novel and to that frankfurtian theoretical framework, pointing its totalizing strength, as well as its insertion in a dialectical dynamic. Next, we propose to consider that all the novels elements that instigate the mythification would point to the condemnation of Faust, while, conversely, the novels aspects that reveal the limits of the myth or contradict it would announce the possibility of the mans salvation. The notion of suffering is especially important, as it appears in both perspectives. This means that suffering can be interpreted both as the disclosure of fate as if Adrians pain and sadness would anticipate the condemnation as can be understood as a symptom that denounces the myth as if it would reveal the lie of the apparent destination and the possibilities of future. Finally, the inquire on músic, a central theme of the novel, also reveals its ambivalente, for it can either strengthen the myth, as it can exercise a critic of the mythologized world.

Resumo: Este projeto aborda de forma crítica e interdisciplinar os lamentos da compositora do seicento italiano, Barbara Strozzi. Para realizá-lo, diferentes abordagens tornaram-se necessárias: primeiramente fiz uma análise de seus lamentos mais representativos. Em segundo lugar, o confronto destas obras com obras similares de diferentes autores possibilitou a compreensão dos ideais estéticos e expressivos do período; e por último, estabeleci as conexões entre estas obras e o cenário cultural e ideológico que as circunda. As vozes de muitas mulheres, poetas e musicistas, criam um denso diálogo com a voz de nossa Venere canora. De Safo a Gaspara Stampa, das heroínas de Ovídio a Barbara Strozzi, todas elas expressam as dores do abandono com as cores violentas do desejo erótico. Tento explicar como a obra de Strozzi encaixa-se nesta tradição e como ela constrói a figura do ser abandonado dentro de um novo contexto, permeado pela força propulsora de Giambattista Marino. Como anfitriã da Accademia degli Unisoni, Barbara Strozzi cria uma música que dialoga com os intelectuais e poetas que freqüentam sua academia, usando uma linguagem que jocosamente provoca, seduz e corajosamente reafirma seu lugar como cortesã
Abstract: This project adresses in a critical and interdisciplinary way the Laments of the seicento woman composer Barbara Strozzi. This task is approached in three complementary steps: firstly an analysis of her most representative laments; secondly, confronting these works with similar ones from different authors, which enables us to understand the aesthetic and expressive ideals of the period; and thirdly the connections between these works and the cultural and ideological scenery that surrounds them. The voices from many women poets and musicians create a dense dialogue with the Venere Canora?s own singing voice. From Sappho to Gaspara Stampa, from Ovid?s heroines to Barbara Strozzi, they all express the pains of abandonment with the violent shades of erotic longing. I try to explain how Strozzi?s work fits into this tradition and how she constructs the figure of the abandoned being within a new poetic and cultural environment, permeated by the revigorating impulse of Giambattista Marino. Being the hostess of the Venetian Accademia degli Unisoni, Barbara Strozzi creates a music that dialogues with her male visitors in a language that wittily provokes, allures and bravely restates her position as a courtesan

A presente dissertação discorre sobre a formação e usos da Praça Cipriano Barcelos, localizada no bairro Centro do município de Pelotas (RS). O objetivo geral foi compreender os usos atrelados à praça em questão ao longo dos dois últimos séculos por grupos social e economicamente marginalizados como escravos, ex-escravos, lavadeiras, operários, dentre outros, bem como as mudanças de ordem física que a praça sofreu nesse período. Os resultados aqui apresentados foram obtidos através de análises arqueológicas de louças e cerâmicas exumadas da praça em questão no ano de 2014, tendo sido também utilizadas fontes documentais históricas, como jornais dos séculos XIX e XX e atas da Câmara de Vereadores de Pelotas do século XIX
The present dissertation discusses the formation and uses of Cipriano Barcelos square, located in the central district of the city of Pelotas (RS). The general objective was to understand the uses linked to the square in question over the last two centuries by socially and economically marginalized groups such as slaves, ex-slaves, washerwomen, workers, among others, as well as the physical changes that the square suffered in that period. The results presented here were obtained through archaeological analyzes of ceramics and exhumed ceramics from the square in question in the year 2014, and historical documentary sources were used, such as 19th and 20th century newspapers and minutes of the 19th century Pelotas Council

A presente dissertação se situa no campo das Ciências da Religião. É um estudo da perícope de Jeremias 20.7-18 na perspectiva do fenômeno de lamentação na área da literatura e religião do mundo bíblico. Jeremias 20.7-18 é um dos textos de lamentação representativos dentre os que se encontram fora do saltério, na literatura profética. O tema desenvolvido visa analisar este salmo em sua forma, lugar e conteúdo na perspectiva da linguagem de lamentação. O conteúdo que nos atemos foram as imagens de Yhwh reconhecidas na perícope: sedutor irresistível, Deus violento, fogo consumidor, guerreiro violento e vingativo, Senhor dos exércitos, libertador do pobre e subversor das cidades impenitentes. O estudo desta perícope foi possível mediante a compreensão da linguagem de lamentação como um fenômeno religioso universal. Localizamos a lamentação na sociedade do antigo Oriente Próximo, pois foi o contexto que tornou possível tal experiência para o antigo Israel. A lamentação na história da religião de Israel só é possível ser construída a partir de hipóteses. As hipóteses para uma história da lamentação em Israel que averiguamos nesta dissertação foram distribuídas entre o período pré-exílico, exílico e pós-exílico, a partir dos principais textos de lamento que marcam tal linguagem em cada período. Reconhecemos o gênero de lamentação nos documentos sagrados de Israel, como gênero literário e as estruturas simbólicas que permeiam os salmos de lamentação. Dessa forma, nos aproximamos da linguagem de lamentação de Jeremias 20.7-18 como parte do fenômeno do antigo Israel. Portanto, a linguagem de lamentação se torna a linguagem do sofrimento. Em outras palavras, a lamentação dá voz ao ser que sofre. O livro de Jeremias se situa num período de intenso sofrimento e violência contra a nação de Israel. É adequado, pois, no âmbito das lamentações, a presença deste salmo peculiar no livro seu profético. Com isso, estudamos exegeticamente nossa perícope perguntando o seu gênero principal. Em seguida, verificamos o lugar vivencial e, em termos de conteúdo quais são as imagens ou quadros ali demonstrados e como os dois se ajustam.

Scholars have considered Italian chamber recitative laments only a transitional phenomenon between madrigal laments and laments organized on the descending tetrachord bass. However, the recitative lament is distinguished from them by its characteristic attitude toward the relationship between music and text. Composer of Italian chamber recitative laments attempted to express more subtle, refined and sometimes complicated emotion in their music. For that purpose, they intentionally created discrepancies between text and music. Sometimes they even destroy the original structure of text in order to clearly deliver the composer's own voice. The basic syntactic structure is deconstructed and reconstructed along with their reading and according to their intention. The discrepancy between text and music is, however, expectable and natural phenomena since text cannot be completely translated or transformed to music and vice versa. The composers of Italian chamber recitative laments utilized their innate heterogeneity between two materials (music and text) as a metaphor that represents the semantic essence of the genre, the conflict. In this context, Italian chamber recitative laments were a real embodiment of the so-called seconda prattica and through the study of them, finally, we more fully able to understand how the spirit of late Renaissance flourished in Italy in the first four decade of the seventeenth century.

Master thesis is focusing on possibility of recycling waste from 3D prints. Goal was to degin a make lament extruder and winder. Design is based on research of avaible comercial and OpenSource solutions. The result is working machine with compact oor prejction, which is able to produce 110 grams of lament per hour. Deviation from diameter was ±0, 07. Conclusion place great emphasis on further improving and testing, beacuse it has not been reached limits of machine.

Esta tese tem por objetivo verificar se a incorporação do esquema iconográfico do Lamento Fúnebre presente no repertório do Ciclo do Mahãparinirvãna do Buda Sãkyamuni, possuiu uma origem estrangeira: a representação da próthesis - a exposição do morto - grega. Essa iconografia foi desenvolvida entre os séculos I e III d.C. em Gandhãra, na fronteira noroeste do subcontinente indiano. O Corpus Documental desta pesquisa é composto por uma vertente indiano-budista e outra greco-romana, sistematizadas em um Banco de Dados e Imagens. Foram utilizadas evidências arqueológicas assim como fontes textuais. A representação formal do Lamento Fúnebre é uma expressão imagética de um momento do ritual funerário entendido como um rito de passagem. Duas estruturas de análise distintas, a Arqueologia da Imagem e a Arqueologia da Morte, foram combinadas para fundamentar a análise e a interpretação do conjunto imagético de temática funerária investigado nesta pesquisa. A análise arqueológica foi realizada sob uma perspectiva de longa duração que permitiu inferir as mudanças fundamentais à compreensão dessa gênese iconográfica. Reconstruções da práxis funerária nas diferentes sociedades que forneceram elementos iconográficos para a formação do repertório imagético de Gandhãra foram elaboradas. As fontes gregas e védico-bramânicas apresentaram paralelos na lamentação do morto. As análises esquemática e temática do Corpus Documental possibilitaram verificar a dimensão da assimilação do esquema formal da próthesis grega na gênese da representação do Mahãparinirvãna, a adaptação desse esquema à temática indiano-budista e os desdobramentos que essa representação apresentou nas demais regiões da Índia e da Ásia. Essa abordagem teórica permitiu analisar as mudanças no discurso textual e iconográfico sobre as exéquias do Buda Sãkyamuni e revelou quais os aspectos da persona social do fundador do Budismo foram favorecidos após o Mahãparinirvãna. O discurso budista de caráter proselitista, aliado à necessidade de criação de uma identidade budista, procurou desenvolver uma narrativa cada vez mais idealizada das exéquias de seu fundador. A persona social do sramana Gautama se modificou ao longo dos séculos e foi reelaborada com base na figura heroicizada do cakravartin védico-bramânico, de modo a legitimar o discurso engendrado pelas comunidades monásticas cada vez mais hierarquizadas. A iconografia de Gandhãra está inserida nesse estágio de desenvolvimento do Budismo, em que algumas das modificações doutrinárias já tinham sido incorporadas ao discurso sobre o Mahãparinirvãna do Buda Sãkyamuni. A partir desse período é observado um grande investimento dispendido com o aparato simbólico e a atenuação da ênfase iconográfica na morte e na lamentação a favor da transcendência
The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate if the iconographic scheme of the funeral lament found in the Mahãparinirvã of Buddha Sãkyamuni scenes had a foreign origin, that is the depiction of the Greek próthesis - laying in state. This theme was developed during the 1st and 3rd centuries AD in Gandhãra, the norwest frontier of South Asian subcontinent. The Documental Corpus of this research is composed of an Indo-Buddhist and a Greco-Roman portion, systematized in a Data and Image Base. Archaelogical and textual evidence is assembled. The formal depiction of the funeral lament is a visual expression of the funeral ritual, understood as a rite of passage. Two diferent theoretical structures are combined to establish the basis for an analysis of the funerary images investigated in the research: the Archaeology of Image and the Archaeology of Death. Archaeological analysis with a long duration perspective is undertaken, permitting the inference of fundamental changes in the iconographical genesis. The funeral praxis of the societies who contributed to the development of the Gandhãran repertoire is reconstructed. Both Greek and Vedic-Brahmanic sources reveal parallel mourning rites of their dead. Schematic and thematic analysis made it possible to verify the extent of assimilation of the Greek próthesis scheme in the development of the Mahãparinirvã depiction; the adaptation of this scheme to the indo-buddhist theme; and the development of this depiction in other Indian and Asian regions. Through this theoretical approach we are able to analyse changes in the textual and iconographical discourses about Buddha Sãkyamuni obsequies and to reveal which aspects of the social persona of the founder of Buddhism were favoured after the Mahãparinirvãna. Buddhist discourse, which had a proselytizing character associated with the necessity of creating a buddhist identity, developed an idealized narrative of its founder\'s obsequies. Sramana Gautama\'s social persona was modified through the centuries and reelaborated on the basis of the heroicized figure of the Vedic-Brahmanic cakravartin. This was used to legitimize the discourse engendered by monastic communities while they became more hierarchical. Gandhãran iconography is part of this stage of development of Buddhism, in which some of these doctrinal changes were already incorporated in the discourse about the Mahãparinirvã of Buddha Sãkyamuni. From this period on high expenditure in the symbolic apparatus was observed as well as a decrease in the iconographical emphasis in death and lament in favour of transcendence

Mitwirkende waren Calliope, eine Muse: Rosa Ravona, Orfeo, ihr Sohn: Regina Mingotti. Vermutlich hat Ristori die Hofkapelle vom Cembalo aus geleitet.

Resumo: Uma nova leitura do Eu, de Augusto dos Anjos, é a proposta maior desta tese; que também apresenta objetivos secundários, como uma incursão pelas obras e periódicos do final do século XIX e início do XX, para entender a visão de mundo do intelectual daquela época; a compreensão das alegorias e metáforas da podridão, utilizadas pelo poeta e dessa sondagem no ?eu? individual, projetado no ?Eu? coletivo; encontrar em qual linha da monadologia está norteada a filosofia de Augusto dos Anjos; ver o que se veiculava, naquela época, sobre o Budismo, a Teosofia, o pensamento de Nietzsche, Haeckel, Kant, Schopenhauer e Bergson; sobre a mimese aristotélica, as tragédias grega e moderna; estudar a etimologia das palavras de Augusto e tecer um paralelo com Ruínas de um Governo, de Rui Barbosa, encontrando um sentido para esse poema lírico-trágicomoderno, o Eu e sentir essa dor da solidão humana no homem desamparado neste país de tantas injustiças sociais.
Abstract: A new reading of the book Eu (I), of Augusto dos Anjos, is the largest proposal of this thesis, which also has secondary objectives, as an incursion by the magazines, books and periodicals of the late nineteenth century and beginning of XX, to understand the vision of the intellectual world that season, to understand the allegories and metaphors of decay, used by the poet and the survey on the "I" of a men, designed the "I" of a group, which is his monadology line, wich is the philosophy that was guide Augusto dos Anjos, see what is conveyed , then, what are published on Buddhism, on Teosofy, and about the Nietzsche's thought, and Haeckel, Kant, Schopenhauer and so Bergson, know about the Aristotelian mimesis, the Greek tragedies and modern tragedies, consider the etymology of the Augusto vocabulary and make a parallel with Ruins of a Government, of Rui Barbosa, finding a meaning to this lyric-tragic-modern poetry, the Eu; and try to feel the pain of loneliness in the human naked and alone man in this country of so many social injustices.

O presente trabalho inclina-se sobre o mito grego de AndrÃmaca e tem por objetivo delimitar os caracteres de sua representaÃÃo. Consideraremos a evoluÃÃo das condiÃÃes de performance da autocaracterizaÃÃo da personagem, paralela à evoluÃÃo de dois gÃneros do discurso â os lamentos fÃnerarios thrÃnos (θρῆνος) e goos (γόος). Estas duas formas de lamento ritualÃstico manifestam-se sob forma de hexÃmetros em Homero e de versos elegÃacos em EurÃpides. Nesses lamentos, uma sÃrie de topoi â marido, cidade, viuvez, maternidade, alcova â sÃo utilizados pelos autores para delimitar os temas abrangidos pela personagem. Esta pesquisa investiga a autocaracterizaÃÃo feminina na Antiguidade. Buscamos reconhecer as relaÃÃes entre discurso e performance na Ãpica e na tragÃdia. Primeiramente, apresentamos um estudo em torno das origens do mito e sua circulaÃÃo, principalmente, entre autores da Antiguidade. Em seguida realizamos um estudo antropoliterÃrio em torno dos estatutos sociais femininos na Antiguidade, especialmente, na polis ateniense do sÃculo quinto. Sugerimos que esses estatutos dependem da relaÃÃo da mulher com sua alcova (θάλαμος). Esses estatutos serÃo discutidos atravÃs, sobretudo, do drama selecionado de EurÃpides. Por fim, verificamos a autocaracterizaÃÃo da personagem especificamente em uma sÃrie de trÃs lamentos encontrados na IlÃada de Homero (cantos VI, XXII e XXIV); e no lamento elegÃaco (v. 102 - 116) na tragÃdia AndrÃmaca (c. 425 a.C.) de EurÃpides (c. 480 - 406 a.C.).

Este trabalho tem o objetivo de analisar o luto e as lamentaÃÃes fÃnebres das personagens da tragÃdia Suplicantes, de EurÃpides, no contexto do teatro, da religiÃo e da polÃtica grega. Para isso, proponho a traduÃÃo da peÃa citada para o portuguÃs brasileiro, observando, por meio dela, o modo como os aspectos concernentes ao luto na GrÃcia antiga podem ser compreendidos por nÃs. A traduÃÃo proposta à feita a partir da ediÃÃo do texto grego estabelecido por Paley (2010), e apoiada em traduÃÃes existentes em lÃnguas modernas, como a portuguesa de Josà Ribeiro Ferreira (2012), a inglesa de David Kovacs (1998), a espanhola de Josà Luis Calvo MartÃnez (1995), entre outras. O primeiro capÃtulo apresenta algumas definiÃÃes gerais de teatro e discute o papel do tradutor de teatro em face dessas definiÃÃes; o segundo trata de modo mais especÃfico do teatro grego em si; o terceiro traz a traduÃÃo proposta com as notas e uma breve apresentaÃÃo de Suplicantes; e o quarto apresenta o estudo da peÃa-objeto no que tange Ãs aÃÃes dos personagens nas cenas que mostram as lamentaÃÃes, o luto e os ritos fÃnebres em suas implicaÃÃes teatrais, religiosas e polÃticas. Baseio-me, principalmente, em Loraux (1994), Alexiou (2002) e Storey (2008). Por fim, concluo com uma reflexÃo sobre o processo de traduÃÃo e sobre a contribuiÃÃo da traduÃÃo da peÃa-objeto para os Estudos ClÃssicos, bem como para os Estudos da TraduÃÃo no Brasil.
This work aims at analyzing the mourning and funeral lamentations of the characters in Euripidesâ Suppliants in the context of the Greek theater, religion and politics. For this, I propose the translation of the mentioned play into Brazilian Portuguese, observing throught it the way the aspects regarding to mourning in Ancient Greece can be comprehended by us. The proposed translation starts from the Greek text edition established by Paley (2010), and is supported by translations into modern languages, such as the Spanish one by Josà Luis Calvo MartÃnez (1995), the Brittish one by David Kovacs (1998), the Portuguese one by Josà Ribeiro Ferreira (2012), among others. The first chapter presents some general notions of Theater and discusses the theater translatorâs role in light of these definitions; the second one regards more specifically to the Greek Theater itself; the third one brings the proposed translation with the notes and a brief presentation of the Suppliants; the fourth one presents the study of the play regarding to the charactersâ actions in scenes of lamentations, mourning and funeral rituals in its theatrical, religious and political implications. In this chapter, I am mainly based on Lourax (1994), Alexiou (2002) and Storey (2008). Finally, I conclude with a reflection upon the translation process as well as the contribution of the translation of the play to the Classical and Translation Studies in Brazil.

I wrote concretely about the second opera by Claudio Monteverdi "Arianna" where is the most famous lamentation. There is a of pieces which were based on Monteverdi ś pattern.The next chapter is about mythological Dido and her lamentations in music (monodic or madrigal). The last two chapters are about relation between marriage and death and using lamentations as a part of court celebrations and about ornamentation.

In this work the author looks for to rescue the reading that Calvin made of the Psalms of lament. It has as intention to present an introduction to the Calvin s hermeneutics. It calls attention for the fact of that although the great contribution of Calvin, its hermeneutics still is, in many aspects, stranger in Brazil. The author makes an attempt to establish the influences on Calvin s thought that had contributed for his hermeneutics. It continues demonstrating the importance of the authority of the Bible for Calvin. After that he presents the main points of Calvin s hermeneutics and for a better understanding, he divides them in presuppositions, principles and approaches. In the last chapter the focus is in an analysis of Calvin s hermeneutics, having the modern study of Psalms as aid. Finally, it presents an attempt of dialogue between Calvin s hermeneutics and contemporary Brazilian Protestantism. This dialogue is presented in the form of some challenges.
Neste trabalho, o autor procura resgatar a leitura que Calvino fez dos Salmos de lamento. Ele tem como propósito apresentar uma introdução à hermenêutica de Calvino. Ele chama atenção para o fato de que apesar da grande contribuição de Calvino, sua hermenêutica ainda é, em muitos aspectos, desconhecida no Brasil. O autor faz uma tentativa de estabelecer as influências sobre o pensamento de Calvino que contribuíram para a sua hermenêutica. Ele prossegue demonstrando a importância da autoridade da Bíblia para Calvino, em seguida, apresenta os pontos principais da hermenêutica de Calvino e, para uma melhor compreensão, divide-os em pressupostos, princípios e enfoques. No último capítulo, se propõe a fazer uma análise da hermenêutica de Calvino de forma mais focada, tendo o estudo moderno dos Salmos como ajuda. Finalmente, ele apresenta uma tentativa de diálogo entre a hermenêutica de Calvino e o protestantismo brasileiro, diálogo este apresentado em forma de alguns desafios.

Four visits were made to 50 dairy farms in England and Wales between February 2003 and February 2004 and a further three visits to 42 of these farms between February 2005 and February 2006. At each visit the locomotion of all cows was scored (15,597 cows, 34,643 measures). Multivariable regression analyses were preformed to identify risk factors associated with increased lameness (poor locomotion). Factors associated with mean herd poor locomotion were dry cows kept in straw yards compared with cubicle houses, pregnant heifers kept with milking cows compared with dry cows in winter, passage way widths <3m compared with 2:,3m, a kerb height of ~15cm compared with >15cm, routine trimming of claws ofall cows by a claw trimmer or by- the farmer compared with no routine claw trimming, feeding maize silage to milking cows compared with other forage types, and the use of automatic scrapers compared with tractor scrapers in the cubicle house. Farmers recorded the lesions they observed while treating lame cows. Sole ulcer, white line disease and digital dermatitis were the three most frequently recorded lesions. The occurrence of sole ulcer, white line disease or digital dermatitis compared with having no lesion was used as the outcome variable in three multilevel binomial logistic regression models with month from calving nested within cow nested within farm. Risk factors associated with increased risk of sole ulcer were being housed on sparse bedding for four months or more, having grooved concrete floors on ~e farm, large herd sizes and parity numbers of four and above. Risk factors associated with increased white line disease were grooved concrete floors increasing parity number. Risk factors associated with increased digital dermatitis were grooved concrete floors and large herd sizes. A large clinical trial was used to assess the effect of intervening on known risk factors associated with lameness. Farmers in the treatment group received farm specific recommendations grouped under five targets areas which reflected the hypothesised aetiologies of sole ulcer, white line disease and digital dermatitis. There were small reductions in locomotion score and sole ulcer rate on treatment farms compared with control. These suggested that the hypotheses that reduced standing time and encouraged increased lying time through improved cow comfort may reduce sole ulcer were, at least in part, correct. There was no clear effect of treatment on the rate white line disease and digital dermatitis. It is likely that more than one of the following factors explain the lack of significant results from these initial investigations; poor recognition oflameness by farmers, insufficient uptake of recommendations, predisposition to lameness from previous lameness event and insufficiently specific lesion definitions.

Lameness is the greatest health and welfare concern in sheep flocks in the U. K. This thesis presents research on epidemiology of lameness in sheep Most previous studies quantifying lameness and its causes are based on the premise that farmers can identify the causes of lameness and recognise lame versus sound sheep. In 2005, a postal questionnaire was sent to a random sample of English sheep farmers to investigate whether farmers could correctly name six common foot lesions in sheep (interdigital dermatitis (ID), footrot (FR), contagious ovine digital dermatitis (CODD), shelly hoof, foot abscess and toe granuloma) from a characteristic picture and a written description. The same questionnaire of six lesions was presented at a meeting of specialist sheep advisors, primarily veterinarians. Approximately 20% of farmers and 80% of sheep specialists named all 6 lesions correctly, indicating a gap in knowledge between sheep advisors and sheep farmers. In addition, farmers tended to name any hoof horn damage as footrot which might imply that some lame sheep receive incorrect treatment. Management factors associated with the prevalence of farmer estimated lameness (irrespective of farmer recognition of lesions) and the adjusted prevalence of lameness caused by ID and FR among flocks where farmers correctly recognised both lesions were investigated and compared in negative binomial regression models. Farmers who routinely foot trimmed and frequently footbathed their sheep reported a higher prevalence of lameness, ID and FR. Farmers who stocked their sheep at >8ewes/hectare reported a high prevalence of both lameness and ID whilst those who separated `some' or `all' lame sheep at pasture reported a low prevalence of both lameness and ID. Farmers in the east of England reported a lower prevalence of lameness, ID and FR compared with central England. A numerical rating locomotion scoring scale (0-6) was developed to monitor locomotion in sheep in a research setting. There was good agreement between and within trained observers using this scale. This scoring system was used in a longitudinal study on one farm, two groups of sheep (30 in each group) with different treatment regimes (antibiotic injection & antibiotic spray vs. foot trimming and antibiotic spray; and occasional footbathing) for lameness with FR and ID were followed for five weeks to investigate the temporal associations between ID, FR and the effect of different treatments on locomotion. From the examinations it was concluded that even mildly lame sheep can have FR and ID. In a multilevel linear mixed model, there was a significant association between ID, FR and locomotion score with the mean score of 0.25 increasing to 0.43 for sheep with ID and to 2.18 for sheep with FR. In addition, sheep that developed FR had a significantly raised locomotion score the week before FR became clinically apparent. Treatment with antibiotic injection and antibiotic spray significantly reduced the locomotion score of sheep the following week. The movie clips from the locomotion scoring reliability study were used to investigate farmer and sheep specialist recognition of lame sheep and decisions on whether to catch them. A group of farmers from three regions (Devon, Newark and Norfolk) and sheep specialists at a Sheep Veterinary Society meeting were shown eight movie clips of sheep with varying locomotion scores. Although the majority of farmers and sheep specialists identified mildly lame sheep with a locomotion score of 2, only 50% of them would catch such a sheep if it was the only lame sheep in the group. Most farmers and sheep specialists did not catch lame sheep until the lameness was locomotion score 3 or 4. The more frequently farmers caught lame sheep, and the milder the lameness when a decision to catch was taken, the lower the farmer reported prevalence of lameness in the flock. The research in this thesis suggests that farmers, who are the primary carers for lame sheep, do not always name foot lesions correctly and so sheep may receive inappropriate treatment for some lesions. In addition, whilst farmers and sheep specialists can recognise lame sheep, they do not always catch and treat mildly lame sheep. Farmers who caught all mildly lame sheep within a few days of seeing them lame reported a lower prevalence of lameness in their flock. This might be explained by the evidence from this thesis that mildly lame sheep can have FR or ID and so prompt treatment of these lame sheep reduces the prevalence and incidence of FR and ID.

This dissertation aims to clear how are shown, in the corpus made by four traditional ballads, constants of the book O Folclore em Sergipe, by Jackson da Silva Lima, the relations between the male and female gender. What guide these relations or interactions and what feature them as literal and figuratively. Thereby, they are addressed, in the ways of how the relations between the gender are established, the hierarchy, the segregation, the antagonism, the equality, the physical and symbolic violence, the trust, the distrust, the seduction and mutual attraction between the genders. Moreover, starting from the analysis of these interaction ways on the texts, are discussed the patriarchal contexts and to what these relations refer: both the diegeticcontext of the female characters and the narrators‟ modern context that set out and transmit the ballads. It‟s made introductorily a short presentation of the collector, editor and folklorist Jackson da Silva Lima, his intellectual formation route, as it is shown the historical context where the narratives were collected by him and the folklore studies tradition in Sergipe, where he belongs. Are also discussed from the perspective of authors as Stuart Hall, Peter Burke and Mikhail Bakhtin, the popular culture‟s concepts, saw as dominated culture, and the tensions and roundness, in the relation between this kind of culture and the classical culture, saw as cultural expression of the ruling classes. Lastly, it‟s also addressed, as theoretical support in the discussion of gender relations, the female condition, according to Simone de Beauvoir, the gender category, according to Teresa de Lauretis and the concept of subalternity, according to Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak.
Esta dissertação visa esclarecer como aparecem, no corpus constituído por quatro romances tradicionais, constantes do livro O Folclore em Sergipe, de Jackson da Silva Lima, as relações entre os gêneros masculino e feminino. O que pautam tais relações ou interações e o que as caracteriza literal e figuradamente. Assim, são abordados, nos modos como se estabelecem as relações entre os gêneros, a hierarquia, a segregação, o antagonismo, a igualdade, a violência física e simbólica, a confiança, a desconfiança, a sedução e a atração mútua entre os gêneros. Além disso, partindo da análise desses modos de interação nos textos, são discutidos os contextos patriarcais a que tais relações remetem: tanto o contexto diegético das personagens femininas, quanto o contexto moderno das narradoras que enunciam e transmitem os romances. É feita introdutoriamente uma breve apresentação do coletor, editor e folclorista Jackson da Silva Lima, seu percurso de formação intelectual, bem como é apresentado o contexto histórico em que as narrativas foram coligidas por ele e a tradição dos estudos de folclore em Sergipe na qual ele se insere. São também discutidos, a partir da perspectiva de autores como Stuart Hall, Peter Burke e Mikhail Bakhtin, os conceitos de cultura popular, vista como cultura dos dominados, e as tensões e circularidades, na relação entre esse tipo de cultura e a cultura erudita, vista como expressão cultural das classes dominantes. Por fim, é abordada também, como suporte teórico na discussão das relações entre os gêneros, a condição feminina, segundo Simone de Beauvoir, a categoria gênero, segundo Teresa de Lauretis e o conceito de subalternidade, segundo Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak.

Este trabalho propõe uma leitura da qînh (elegia) que Davi escreveu em homenagem a Saul e Jônatas (2 Sm 1:17-27). Parte da investigação desse gênero no interior da Bíblia Hebraica, identificando os principais traços dele e comparando-o a gêneros próximos numa tentativa de compreender a sua função social nos tempos bíblicos e descobrir possíveis razões para a sua reduzida presença na Bíblia Hebraica. Também constata de que modo esse lamento torna evidentes certos traços do personagem Davi, o que enriquece o entendimento dos relatos, contidos nos livros de Samuel, que narram a sua ascensão ao trono e o seu reinado. Finalmente, apresenta uma análise do poema eleito e do espaço narrativo em que ele emerge.
This paper proposes a reading of the qînh (\"elegy\") that David wrote in honor of Saul and Jonathan (2 Samuel 1: 17-27). Begins with research of this genre within the Hebrew Bible, identifying the main features of it and comparing it to related genres in an attempt to understand its social function in biblical times and find possible reasons for its reduced presence in the Hebrew Bible. Also notes how this lament becomes evident traits of the character David, which enhances understanding of the reports contained in the books of Samuel, which tell his ascension to the throne and his reign. Finally, it presents an analysis of the chosen poem and the narrative space in which it emerges.

Over the past decade, there has been growth in scientific research on welfare in modern dairy production systems. The issue of cow comfort and how it relates to the risk of lameness has received considerable interest. The objectives of this thesis were to establish reliable methods of using lying behaviour as a measure of cow comfort, to describe the variation in lying behaviour of individual cows within farm and between farms, and to evaluate the relationship between stall comfort, lying behaviour, and lameness. A cross-farm assessment was conducted on 43 commercial dairy farms in the Fraser Valley region of British Columbia. Electronic data loggers recorded lying behaviour of 2033 cows at 1-min intervals for 5 days. The first study established that monitoring at least 30 cows per farm for 3 days provides an accurate estimate of the lying behaviour of the lactating cows at that time. Cows averaged 11 h/d lying down, separated into 9 bouts/d with an average duration of 88 min/bout. Cows were scored for lameness using a 5-point Numerical Rating System (NRS) in which 1 = sound and 5 = severely lame. A subsample of 1319 cows from 28 farms using either deep-bedded stalls (n = 11) or mattress stalls (n = 17) were used for the second study. Overall, 21% of the cows were scored as NRS = 3 and 7% as NRS = 4; no cow was scoared as NRS = 5. Mattress farms had higher prevalence of NRS = 4 compared to deep-bedded farms (9 vs. 4%, respectively). Cows with NRS = 4 housed on deep-bedded stalls spent 1.6 h/d more lying, and had longer bouts compared to cows with NRS ≤ 3, but there were no behavioural differences among cows with different degrees of lameness housed on mattress stalls. Extreme lying behaviour, particularly the high lying times (≥ 14 h/d) and long lying bouts (≥ 99 min/bout) were associated with increased odds of lameness, regardless of stall surface. Stall comfort, lying behaviour, and lameness are interlinked, and should all be integrated as measures of cow comfort.

For the modern dairy cow, advances in genetics and breeding for productivity has resulted in an increasing incidence of health disorders and reduced longevity. One of the most important health problems is lameness, which has led to significant economic, production and welfare consequences. A reduction in lameness will improve the economic future of the dairy industry through increased profitability and decreased welfare-related problems. Although positive attempts have been made by researchers and the industry towards improving lameness, it has remained a persistent ailment for dairy farmers. Further analysis of the genetic and environmental factors influencing lameness is warranted so that selection indices and management practices can be modified leading to improved health and welfare of the dairy cow. Several factors that cause dairy cow lameness have been implicated. I reviewed previous studies on these causative factors as well as the association between lameness, longevity and fertility. It has also been suggested that lameness affects milk production of dairy cows, but reports on the association between lameness and daily milk yield of cows have varied among researchers. Using locomotion score data on 248 cows from the Langhill herd, I investigated the relationship between locomotion score which has a high genetic correlation with lameness and various explanatory variables and also the association between daily milk yield and lameness. The study revealed that the most significant factors affecting locomotion are management regime (high concentrate feed and all year indoor housing; low concentrate feed and outdoors in summer) and time of year when cows are locomotion scored. It also showed that lameness adversely affects the milk yield of later lactation cows, and that high yielding cows are more susceptible to lameness. Housing environment plays a significant role in the health and welfare of dairy cows. With national type evaluation records, I estimated the association between housing systems and lameness-related type traits as well as genetic parameters for the locomotion traits. The analysis indicated that cows kept at pasture had favourable linear and composite type trait scores compared with cows in cubicles, straw yards and slatted floors or loafing yards. Locomotion score had strong genetic and phenotypic correlations with the leg and feet composite. Bone quality, which is a new trait in the UK type classification scheme, was moderately heritable (0.23) and had a moderate and positive genetic association with locomotion and leg and feet composite. This suggests that breeding for flatter, more refined bones could reduce locomotion disorders and help improve the longevity of the dairy cow. Analysis of national data again showed reduced incidence of digital dermatitis (DD) for cows at pasture and those with flatter, more refined bones, higher locomotion score and better leg and feet composite. Estimates of genetic parameters indicated heritable variation of DD among cows and moderate genetic associations between DD and production traits and longevity. Incorporating DD in future selection indices will be useful for increased productive life. Using random regression, I analysed changes in type traits associated with lameness (locomotion, rear legs, side view, foot angle and leg and feet composite) in relation to time (months) that cows had spent in cubicles before being classified. The general trend supported the fact that cubicle housing is unfavourable to these traits. There was significant evidence of a genotype x environment interaction, suggesting variation between bulls in the sensitivity of their daughters to cubicle housing with time.

This essay, which is at once a literary critical examination and a theological exploration of the Hebraic scriptural book of Lamentations in relation to ancient Sumerian lament, employs a mixed critical approach (e.g., form, feminist, postmodern, reader response), to address various lyrical, contextual, and thematic elements common to both the biblical Lamentations and the older Sumerian compositions. Specific focus is given to issues of gender and gender-malleability, as well as the notion of "transgression" and the various meanings that may be attached to this word in various contexts, theological or otherwise. Also addressed is the means by which the lament genre reflects/reveals the ways in which individuals and communities attempt to construct meaning, or find solace, in the face of human suffering.

Il Lamento rituale è un istituto culturale universalmente diffuso, uno dei più antichi modi di addomesticare il momento disgregante della morte e renderla pensabile all’interno di modelli socialmente condivisi e rassicuranti. In Finlandia però, negli ultimi anni, è stato riportato alla luce e reinterpretato quale pratica terapeutica rivolta all’espressione di esperienze emozionali di difficile elaborazione. La seguente rassegna si propone di analizzare la declinazione moderna di questa tradizione, evidenziando come le nuove lamentatrici si pongano in un rapporto di continuità-discontinuità creativa. Le potenzialità di questo strumento culturale non si dispiegano solamente nella sua capacità di canalizzare i vissuti dolorosi e renderli comunicabili attraverso un linguaggio alternativo, ma anche nel suo innescare una rivoluzione epistemologica nel modo di pensare le emozioni, le relazioni e l’appartenenza ad una comunità. Attraverso la voce delle lamentatrici moderne si cercherà di ripercorrere la storia del Lamento fino al presente, indagare il motivo della sua rinascita e la sua compatibilità con il contesto finlandese moderno. Ampio spazio verrà dato alla personale esperienza delle mie interlocutrici, cercando di mostrare come la rivisitazione moderna del Lamento non si offra come fenomeno sociale omogeneo e monolitico, ma piuttosto come un processo polifonico, continuamente rinegoziato e percorso da una moltitudine di anime, talvolta anche discordanti.

Lameness is one of the most important welfare issues in the dairy industry with all cows being at risk during their productive life. It decreases milk production, compromises fertility and increases the chance of being culled. To reduce the likelihood of lameness in cows, a thorough knowledge of the risk factors is essential. Risk factors have been found to differ between farming systems which highlighted the need for a project to identify risk factors of lameness in NSW pasture-based dairies. The thesis reviews the literature on risk factors pertaining to lameness in dairy cattle worldwide with focus on the main aspects of lameness regarding pasture-based dairy farming. First study investigates the prevalence and the potential risk factors for lameness in 62 pasture-based dairies in NSW with the aim to identify risk factors for lameness and to provide the industry with an indication as to the relative contribution of these risks so that dairy producers could allocate their resources to areas most likely to have the greatest impact when planning a prevention strategy. The data gathered through the interviews with farmers focuses on their perception of lameness in their herds. International experience suggests farmers’ perception of lameness are less than the true prevalence, which was proved to be the case in NSW, Australia. The reduced perception of lameness appears to be associated with delayed treatment and poor treatment outcome. Treatment outcomes may be further compromised by almost 30% of farmers or farm staff not having undergone training as to how to effectively trim and treat lame cows. The final study gathers data on wooden hoof blocks commonly used in treatment of lame cows. This study assesses the association between wood density, longevity, and wear characteristics of wooden hoof blocks. It was found that the hardness of the commercial blocks is insufficient to provide an appropriate duration of protection for healing claw lesions.

Lameness is a condition that is difficult to treat in horses when discovered too late and is therefore a common cause for culling. Veterinarians often make a diagnosis based on their subjective experience. In this thesis, we investigate whether neural networks can do lameness detection of horses by using the 3D reconstructed model of the horses. We divide the problem into two parts. The first part is about the 3D model reconstruction of the horse in the videos and then we use neural networks to do lameness detection. We also perform experiments on human videos to test the generalization of our idea, reconstructing the 3D human model in the videos and doing action recognition with neural networks. The two frameworks we use are standard LSTM and LSTM with an attention mechanism. The results of the human experiments show that both networks can separate human actions given the 3D human model sequences and some specific joints are pointed out when doing the two-class action classification. The results of animal experiments preliminarily show that the information of the 3D horse model can be used to perform lameness detection and front-limb lameness is more comfortable for the networks to learn compared to hind-limb lameness.
Hälta är ett svårbehandlat tillstånd hos hästar när det upptäcks för sent och är därför en vanlig orsak för avlivning. Veterinärer ställer ofta en diagnos baserat på deras subjektiva erfarenhet. I det här examensarbetet undersöker vi om neurala nätverk kan upptäcka hälta med hjälp av en 3D-rekonstruerad modell av hästar. Vi delar upp problemet i två delar. Den första delen handlar om rekonstruktion av 3D-modellen av hästen i filmerna och sedan använder vi neurala nätverk för att göra hältedetektering. Vi utför också experiment på mänskliga videor för att testa generaliseringen av vår idé, rekonstruerar den mänskliga 3D-modellen i videorna och utför handlingsigenkänning med neurala nätverk. De två sortens nätverk vi använder är ett standard LSTM-nätverk och ett LSTM-nätverk med en uppmärksamhetsmekanism. Resultaten från de mänskliga experimenten visar att båda nätverken kan separera mänskliga handlingar givet 3D-modeller och vissa relevanta kroppsdelar ges uppmärksamhet när man gör actionklassificering över två klasser. Resultaten av försöken på hästdata visar preliminärt att informationen i 3D-hästmodellen kan användas för att utföra hältedetektion och att det är lättare att detektera frambenshälta jämfört med att lära sig att detektera bakbenshälta.
