The achievements of the labor movement in the Caribbean are generally historicized without highlighting the contribution of labor colleges to the function and survivability of trade unions. For more than fifty years, labor colleges have played a critical role in developing the knowledge and skill sets of union members who had an interest in labor studies. Many will attribute the heydays of the Caribbean labor movement in the mid-1900s to the intellectual thrust given to the trade union movement by labor colleges. During this period, trade unions relied heavily on labor colleges for intellectual support and advice primarily on matters that required in-depth academic investigation. Support from the labor colleges enhanced the reputation of the labor movement by shifting popular notions that the trade union movement consisted only of the poor and illiterate working class. The effects of these parallel training activities have been positive for both the leadership of the trade union movement and the overall impact they have had on labor-management relationships. There has been a noted change in the pattern of trade union leadership where “the first generation leaders, considered by many as demagogic and messianic, have given way increasingly to a younger and more formally educated second and third generation leadership”.

Resumo:

The 1865 Morant Bay Rebellion in Jamaica has generally been interpreted as a struggle between the post-emancipation Black peasantry and the white colonial government, which led to a violent confrontation, military suppression, and the demise of the Jamaican House of Assembly in favor of direct Crown Colony rule. Yet, the archival record shows other more complex currents that were also at play, including multi-racial, cross-class alliances, and strong conflicts over local politics, corruption, and labor rights. This article focuses on a little noted aspect of the events of 1865: the arrest for sedition of Sidney Lindo Levien, a Jewish newspaper publisher of The County Union. Levien advocated for the poor, foreigners, and women; joined the Underhill Meetings supporting the political rights of the vast majority of people emancipated from slavery; and was arrested under martial law during the rebellion and later found guilty of sedition, serving nearly 7 months in prison of a 1 year sentence before being pardoned. Drawing on his own writings, photographs, family genealogy, and Levien’s hitherto unknown “Chronicle of 1865,” I argue that his story opens new questions about the relation between Jews and Baptists, Black and “Coloured,” Asian and Maroon, and varied elite and non-elite “White” populations in Jamaica, taking us beyond the typical Black-vs-white framing of the Morant Bay Rebellion toward a more multi-sided emphasis on cross-racial protest and multi-denominational resistance within the imperial global economy. Both dominant “White” colonial histories and subsequent Jamaican “Black” national histories have erased the more diverse actors and cross-cutting interests that shaped the events of 1865, which only come into view through a multi-ethnic history of global mobilities and shifting identities, which I refer to as a critical cosmopolitan perspective.

Resumo:

Recent critiques by scholars conducting research on the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program and labour geographers assert that there has been a lack of emphasis in the academic literature on the relevance of the formal workplace for developing an understanding of the social relations between capital and labour. In this article, I address these critiques through an empirical examination of workplace dynamics on two small-scale tobacco farms in Delhi, Ontario, Canada. My analysis draws upon original empirical evidence from interviews with three Mexican and nine Jamaican workers, two union representatives, and two farm owners. I argue that the farm is not simply a site for producing tobacco with economic efficiency, but an arena of struggle in which workers confront their employers, and a place of critical contests in the politics of production.

Resumo:

Analysis of the current situation. Higher education institutions in Ukraine are in a competitive environment, and in a constant struggle for the best students, researchers, grants, and other budgetary and extra-budgetary funding. After all, funding for higher education in Ukraine is much lower than in European countries. Currently, due to the war in the country, many Ukrainians have gained access to education in the European Union, so more and more HEIs are developing a scientific component as an alternative source of replacing the loss of applicants, including foreign ones, who were lost due to the war in the country. This approach of science to educational institutions is in line with the 4th UN Sustainable Development Goal, namely subparagraph 4.4 - to improve the quality of higher education and ensure its close connection with science, and to promote the formation of cities of education and science in the country. However, these processes necessitate competition that is limited by financial resources. In recent years, Ukrainian educational institutions have been working more and more actively to enter national and global rankings of higher education institutions, trying to improve their positions in the rankings and formulate an opinion about their success among applicants, partners, entrepreneurs, local authorities, etc. Stakeholder engagement and maintaining the quality of education and research are key to ensuring compliance with labor market needs and attracting investment. The reorientation towards a socially responsible university reflects global trends and contributes to the formation of a positive image among the main stakeholders of the HEI. Adapting to these trends allows HEIs to successfully position themselves in the market, attracting students, teachers, and investors. The war in Ukraine restricts the full development and formation of a positive image of higher education institutions and leads to an outflow of intellectual capital from the country. The results of the study show that in terms of the "Brain Drain" indicator, Ukraine ranks among the worst in the world with an index of 8.9 out of 10, with only Samoa and Jamaica being worse off. The dynamics of entering the world rankings of universities, the number of students graduating by year, both domestic and foreign, are studied. The necessity of creating and promoting a positive image of higher education institutions in the modern competitive market environment, the need to position universities in the international globalized environment is substantiated.

In 1983, the arrest of Noureddin Kianouri, the first secretary of the Tudeh Party of Iran came as a shock to the international community. In a letter of condemnation, communist parties from Indonesia to Jamaica pledged solidarity with their Iranian comrades. The optimism initially brought by the 1979 revolution was severely reversed and the suppression of the Iranian Left by the Islamic government was regarded as an attack on the international Left. A significant voice of opposition came from Britain, with the Communist party of Great Britain (CPGB), the British Labor party, the trade unions and solidarity groups coming out in full support of the Tudeh and to take on the cause of Iran as their own. Although interest had existed since the 1940s, it was the 1979 revolution that firmly placed the Tudeh within the discourse of the British Left, energizing the movement and solidifying its internationalist credentials. Similarly, for the Tudeh, which had become side-lined in Iranian politics and had lost members to more radical strands of the Iranian Left, the attention it received helped renew its activism and sense of purpose.
