In the fall of 2004, the Academic Computing Center, a division of the Information Technology Services Department (ITS) at Minnesota State University, Mankato took over responsibility for the computers in the public areas of Memorial Library. For the first time, affiliated Memorial Library users were required to authenticate using a campus username and password, a change that effectively eliminated computer access for anyone not part of the university community. This posed a dilemma for the librarians. Because of its Federal Depository status, the library had a responsibility to provide general access to both print and online government publications for the general public. Furthermore, the library had a long tradition of providing guest access to most library resources, and there was reluctance to abandon the practice. Therefore the librarians worked with ITS to retain a small group of six computers that did not require authentication and were clearly marked for community use, along with several standup, open-access computers on each floor used primarily for searching the library catalog. The additional need to provide computer access to high school students visiting the library for research and instruction led to more discussions with ITS and resulted in a means of generating temporary usernames and passwords through a Web form. These user accommodations were implemented in the library without creating a written policy governing the use of open-access computers.

This paper is aimed to analyse the strategies applied for the best practices in Anna Centenary Library (ACL), Chennai. Best practice is a technique, used to advance the existing work process of an organization like library and information centers to achieve its purpose successfully. In the present day, public libraries are also started to focus on best practices as one of the services to retain the public. Anna Centenary Library falls under public library category, which follows best practices such as Orientation programme for civil service aspirants, weekly children programme and Ponmaalai Pozhudhu programme. A study was conducted among the readers of the library to analyze and know the impact of best practices followed by ACL particularly Ponmaalai Pozhudhu programme. It was revealed that Ponmaalai Pozhudhu Programme had a great impact among the readers of all the best practices being conducted by the library.

The more than one-hundred year old public library in a small urban city in the northeastern U.S. (henceforth referred to as Riverburg) describes itself as an integral sponsor of knowledge, culture, education, and information in the city and an institution that serves “users of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds” in order to retain status as “both a significant institutional symbol and a core working component of our democratic society” (library website). Perhaps as a result of its history and mission, the library houses an afterschool homework help program that runs most weekdays during the school year. This paper concerns how East African youth (many of whom are immigrant and/or refugee) in the Riverburg Public Library afterschool program, in the words of the program director in a conversation with me in October 2011, “view themselves both as a part of the afterschool program and in relation to the program.” A sizeable and visible minority group in the community, this group of students faces multiple obstacles to success in the traditional structures of the local public schools, some having to do with factors well outside of their control. The students’ cultural context presents unique challenges for the library afterschool program, which seeks to help these students succeed in school by providing a space where tutors can help them with their homework.

Purpose This paper aims to conduct an exploratory research of recruitment source and professional staff retention for succession planning, as well as suggests some experiences of keeping qualified staff in Vietnamese libraries. It stems from the context of academic and public libraries in the Mekong Delta region, Vietnam. Design/methodology/approach This research draws on transformational leadership theory initiated by Burns (1978) and expanded by Bass (1985). It was conducted through a multi-method case study approach at 13 public and 4 academic libraries in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Data collection consisted of an online survey with 162 responses and 23 in-depth semi-structured interviews. Findings Research result indicates that staff recruitment for managerial positions in Vietnamese libraries is mainly from within the organisation. Staff retention relies on differing factors, of which salary was considered the most important by several participants. However, succession planning itself may be a good way to keep qualified employees who would like to be promoted. For those employees attracted by high salaries rather than future managerial positions, supplemental income is believed to be a possible solution. Research limitations/implications A larger research coverage will be suggested to further research, so as to get further information about staff recruitment and how to retain qualified staff in Vietnamese library settings. Practical implications This study aims to benefit library leaders by providing good insights into which recruitment source is suitable to look for qualified staff for managerial positions in Vietnam. Most importantly, the research would inform library leaders and the local government in the Mekong Delta of the possible reasons for staff turnover. This study also helps to raise library leaders’ awareness of how to retain their qualified professional employees within a highly dynamic environment. Originality/value This research contributes to literature about qualified staff recruitment and retention in an Asian country context, which has not been discussed so far. It also helps to raise awareness of library leaders about applying some practical strategies, including succession planning, into retaining managing employees in their organisations.

Purpose This study aims to highlight the issues and concerns specific to information professionals (IPs) in academic libraries of Pakistan. It identifies the problems that academic libraries face in attracting and hiring competent IPs along with the strategies to be used to recruit and retain them in the dynamic environment of academia. Moreover, it provides a list of required skills that employers would look for while hiring IPs in academic settings. Design/methodology/approach Semi-structured interviews of 20 library leaders involved in hiring process were conducted from 16 public and private sector universities. Findings Findings identified interpersonal skills as the most desired followed by the subject knowledge and IT orientation while hiring IPs for the present and foreseeable future. Good salary package, conducive work environment with opportunities for learning and continuing professional development and speedy promotion were significant perceived factors to attract and retain the talented professionals in university library settings. Practical implications The study would be helpful for policymakers and administrators to hire and retain the IPs capable of developing user-centered services in academic libraries. Originality/value Practical suggestions made for hiring, retaining and developing IPs in academic libraries would be beneficial for other developing countries with similar context. It addressed an unexplored area in the context of a developing country and reported original research that will assist policy and decision-makers to hire and retain competent human resources.

Based on the results of this study it is known that in the public sphere most migrants in the city of Semarang use Indonesian more often than their mother tongue. However, it turns out that there are some migrants who still retain their native language, namely the traditional migrants who live in the villages. In the public sphere for migrants who are married and already working, in communicating with colleagues, superiors and subordinates more often use Indonesian in both official and informal situations. In the public sphere (such as schools and workplaces) for migrants with child status, most choose to use Indonesian to communicate well with peers, teachers, administrative staff, library staff, as well as gardeners and janitors.

Learning outcomes The purpose of this paper is to study and identify the four core management principles of the POLC management framework: planning, organizing, leading and controlling. In particular, students are expected to understand that the classical conceptual frameworks used in strategic management are useful and valid for the planning principle in tech startups. Case overview/synopsis This case study presents the story of Tomás Pollak, founder and CEO of Prey, a software company dedicated to tracking stolen mobile devices. It covers a period of six years beginning at the foundation of the company in 2009 and up to 2015, when the company faced the choice of entering into an alliance with a government agency: The Investigations Police of Chile (PDI or Policía de Investigaciones de Chile). Tomás faced the decision of either going through with the alliance, while dealing with the dire need of recruiting and retaining company talent. This case highlights several management challenges and common strategies faced by entrepreneurs and is intended to spark a class discussion about how the relevance of these management concepts in the context of startups. This research aims to clarify the impact of monetary reform on retail banking, with the introduction of private crypto-currencies (CCs) and retail central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). Given the exponential increase in private de-centralized CCs, involving stablecoins and non-backed digital assets, total crypto assets have now developed into a USD 1.04 trillion market capitalization. Governments and monetary authorities were initially reticent, but now a number of central banks are developing their own wholesale and retail CBDCs. By conducting library research, document and content analysis involving secondary data, this research confirms, involving central bank admission, that the current centralized monetary system allows commercial banks to lend the vast majority of deposit money into existence. However, the impact of private CCs and introduction of retail CBDCs will eliminate credit creation, thus rendering the commercial banking model obsolete. This will inevitably involve a structural change in the global financial system, with the separation of the public issuance of money and the private issuance of equity finance and investment. Ultimately, retail CBDCs will have to develop into public stablecoins that are pegged to intrinsic value to satisfy the store of value function of money and provide stability as the common denominator for all economic transactions.

The decision in July 1988 to build a new library in Paris has been the starting point of a deep change in every field of activity for the French national library, which combines the old Bibliothèque nationale in the Rue de Richelieu with the Bibliothèque de France in Tolbiac in what is now known as the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF). The collections will be divided between two sites: the Rue de Richelieu building will retain the special collections, in improved storage conditions and with better access; while the printed and audiovisual collections are being transferred to the new building at Tolbiac between the end of 1996 and the end of 1998. 370,000 books will be acquired specially to fill gaps in previously neglected areas such as law, economics and science. A new OPAC, due for completion in 1998, will provide access to merged files of the BnF, including 4.5 million converted records from the old hand-written catalogue. Next to the research reading rooms, which are for registered users only, will be ten reading rooms open to the general public for a fee, which will have 380,000 books on open access. The OPAC will be accessible remotely, as will the seat and book reservation system. A new preservation centre has been built in Marne-la-Vallée, 20 km east of Paris; there is a special emphasis on deacidification. There are two digitization programmes, for 100,000 texts and 300,000 pictures; negotiation is taking place with copyright holders. Experimental access to several bibliographic databases and digitized collections is already proving successful. The new reference library in the new building opened in December 1996 and the research library will open in 1998.

Purpose: The phenomenon of a scarcity of cooking oil will occur in Indonesia from the end of 2021 to early 2022, this scarcity will cause prices to rise in markets, causing people to find it difficult to get cooking oil. The Indonesian government, in response to this phenomenon, finally made a policy related to the highest retail price of cooking oil so that the price of cooking oil becomes more stable and easy to reach the public. However, this policy was not welcomed by the public. Therefore this study will discuss the political economy of the Indonesian government in addressing the scarcity of cooking oil from an Islamic perspective. Methodology: This research is descriptive qualitative research, using library research methods by collecting data from literature and books related to the Indonesian government's policy in addressing the scarcity of cooking oil. Results: This study concludes that the scarcity of cooking oil is due to hoarding and an agreement between the four large cooking oil companies to increase their selling price. Government policy in responding to this phenomenon is by Islamic provisions which aim to realize a fair market mechanism. However, there are still many people who think that the purpose of the government policy is bad due to the lack of transparency to the public regarding the policies made by the government

Purpose This paper aims to describe a multifaceted campus-wide initiative to retain transfer students that was undertaken when it was recognized that their retention rates were lower than those of first-time, full-time students. Design/methodology/approach The Enhancing Student Experience (ESE) Working Group at the University at Albany (UAlbany) brought together key parties from Student Affairs and academic units, including the University Libraries, and provided an energizing arena in which existing student engagement and retention endeavors were discussed and coordinated, and new initiatives were inspired. Findings This paper reflects the work of a subcommittee of the ESE group that focused on developing strategies to increase the retention rate of students who transferred to UAlbany, and identifying characteristics of those first-time, full-time students who transferred from UAlbany. The efforts discussed in this paper, which were guided by professional experiences, institutional data and published reports, resulted in a 2 per cent increase in the student retention rate in the past two years. Research limitations/implications The data collection and analysis, and the initiatives, are specific to one public research university. Practical implications Initiatives undertaken to address the retention of transfer students have begun to have an impact. Originality/value The “all-hands-on-deck” approach described in this paper demonstrates how strategic collaborations among the many institutional stakeholders at a public research university were marshalled to have a significant and positive impact on student retention.

AbstractTobacco is an agricultural commodity in the plantation sector which has a high selling value. It is known that the largest customs and excise tax contributor taken by the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) comes from Tobacco Products Excise (CHT). Behind the large number of revenue from this excise, the government states that smoking deaths take into account the dimensions of public health. Every year the government issues a policy of excise tariffs on tobacco products and exits the retail sale price (HJE), but this policy does not have a significant impact on the public. This study aims to see and describe the government's strategy in maximizing the policy of increasing the tobacco excise tariff (CHT) in the context of smoking prohibition in Indonesia. The research method used is library research (library research) using a contect analysis approach or content study. Dibalik besarnya angka penerimaan dari cukai ini, pemerintah berusaha menekan angka konsumsi rokok utamanya dengan mempertimbangkan dimensi kesehatan masyarakat. Pada setiap tahunnya pemerintah mengeluarkan kebijakan kenaikan tarif cukai hasil tembakau dan penyesuaian Harga Jual Eceran (HJE), namun kebijakan ini tidak memberikan dampak yang cukup signifikan dikalangan masyarakat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dan mendeskripsikan strategi pemerintah dalam memaksimalkan kebijakan kenaikan tarif Cukai Hasil Tembakau (CHT) dalam rangka menekan konsumsi rokok di Indonesia. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian kepustakaan (library research) dengan menggunakan pendekatan contect analysis atau kajian isi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa strategi pemerintah dalam memaksimalkan kebijakan kenaikan tarif Cukai Hasil Tembakau (CHT) dalam rangka menekan konsumsi rokok Indonesia masih belum optimal, hal ini dapat dilihat dari faktor pendukung dan faktor penghambat pemerintah dalam memaksimalkan kebijakan kenaikan tarif Cukai Hasil Tembakau (CHT) dalam rangka menekan konsumsi rokok Indonesia.

This study analyzes the rebranding process in the case of a brand change from White Brown Electronics to Informa Electronics. The method used is descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Sources of data obtained through library research and field studies in the form of observations and interviews. The research was conducted at Informa Electronics Lving World Alam Sutera in Tangerang City and the object of the research was how marketing communication strategies for electronic products at Informa Electronics. The data is analyzed through the data reduction or data sorting stage, then the data is presented or displayed, and finally concluded according to the research problem. The results show that Informa Electronics has succeeded in making people and customers believe and continue to shop at Informa Electronics. The conclusions obtained from the research are: Informa Electronics in the process of rebranding a brand involves various aspects, namely, benefit description, association, distinction, awareness or brand identity, brand image and create trust. Informa Electronics also uses various promotional media, both online and offline promotional media, to improve their marketing communication strategies. These various things were carried out in order to increase the knowledge of the public and customers about Informa Electronics so as to generate feedback, namely by buying electronic products at Informa Electronics. Structured abstract Subject area information and communication technology (ICT) for development. Study level/applicability Master of Business Administration Program’s Management Information Systems courses. Or introductory courses in Masters in ICT for Development. Case overview The paper aims to highlight the endeavour of public distribution system (PDS), a food security scheme for under-privileged people in India, towards excellence, using ICT in the state of Chhattisgarh. It presents two important roles of ICT: one, as a system improvement tool, through supply chain integration (in Phase 1) and, the other, as tool for empowerment, by providing choices through computerized online real-time electronic (CORE) PDS (in Phase 2). CORE PDS was intended to provide choices of retail outlets to poor beneficiaries for collecting their food entitlement, breaking the retail outlet’s monopoly. The project was successfully implemented in some urban areas of Chhattisgarh, providing motivation for its mass scale roll-out. But, the contextual differences between rural and urban settings were raising questions on the ultimate value expected to be delivered by the project in rural areas. The rising cost of textbooks for students has been highlighted as a major concern in higher education, particularly in the US and Canada. Less has been reported, however, about the costs of textbooks outside of North America, including in Europe. We address this gap in the knowledge through a case study of one Irish higher education institution, focusing on the cost, accessibility, and licensing of textbooks. We report here on an investigation of textbook prices drawing from an official college course catalog containing several thousand books. We detail how we sought to determine metadata of these books including: the formats they are available in, whether they are in the public domain, and the retail prices. We explain how we used methods to automatically determine textbook costs using Google Books API and make our code and dataset publicly available.

Subject area Premium customer service in the commodities market can be made a competitive advantage. The case deals with BPCL, a public limited Government organization that is successful through its strategic orientation while serving its customers. Study level/applicability This case is suitable for students who are enrolled in a Masters or an Executive Programme in Management. For a Masters programme in Management, the case can be introduced in the marketing course in sessions related to Customer Relationship Management, Marketing Strategy and Marketing in a Government organization. The case will also fit well with the audience of the Executive Programme in sessions on Marketing Management. The assignment questions provided below are designed from the perspective of teaching this case to a business student audience. Case overview The case study shows how a public sector company has taken steps to retain customers as well as increase its customer base through premium servicing. In all the fuel filling stations in India, the price is the same and is totally controlled by the Government. However, to survive in this market, different players adopted strategies to lure more customers and be profitable and productive in their operations. BPCL adopted a company owned company operated model, where they created a niche for themselves through premium service provided to retail customers. The case study deals with details of planning, recruitment and training and job rotation of staff by BPCL and shows how the same has led to increased commitment and motivation among employees. While operating in 24 × 7, 365 days mode, BPCL has been able to address customer complaints and feedback which has led to less waiting time for retail customers. There has been an increase in the number of customers and a high retention rate of existing customers. Indonesia has enormous potential in developing Islamic finance because Indonesia has the largest number of Muslims in the world and high economic growth. The issuance of State Sharia Securities (sukuk) has become the main financing instrument. The presence of sukuk further strengthens the government's ability to finance the budget deficit. The government has many choices in determining the combination of its financing instruments. The government can keep debt costs to a minimum. This study aims to determine 1) the development of sukuk in Indonesia and 2) the role of sukuk in Indonesia's economic growth. This research uses qualitative methods and library research approach. Researchers use secondary data, namely data sourced from existing literature or references. The results of this study are 1) The Indonesian government has issued Retail Sukuk (SR), namely SR 001 - SR 013. The issuance of State Sukuk from year to year continues to increase, in accordance with developments and strategies applied in the APBN. 2) The role of State Sukuk has a very positive impact, such as financing project development, encouraging development of the Islamic financial market, creating branch marks in the Islamic financial market, developing alternative investment instruments, and utilizing public funds.

The emerging technique of serial X-ray diffraction, in which diffraction data are collected from samples flowing across a pulsed X-ray source at repetition rates of 100 Hz or higher, has necessitated the development of new software in order to handle the large data volumes produced. Sorting of data according to different criteria and rapid filtering of events to retain only diffraction patterns of interest results in significant reductions in data volume, thereby simplifying subsequent data analysis and management tasks. Meanwhile the generation of reduced data in the form of virtual powder patterns, radial stacks, histograms and other meta data creates data set summaries for analysis and overall experiment evaluation. Rapid data reduction early in the analysis pipeline is proving to be an essential first step in serial imaging experiments, prompting the authors to make the tool described in this article available to the general community. Originally developed for experiments at X-ray free-electron lasers, the software is based on a modular facility-independent library to promote portability between different experiments and is available under version 3 or later of the GNU General Public License.

Under the banner of “data for good,” companies in the technology, finance, and retail sectors supply their proprietary datasets to development agencies, NGOs, and intergovernmental organizations to help solve an array of social problems. We focus on the activities and implications of the Data for Climate Action campaign, a set of public–private collaborations that wield user data to design innovative responses to the global climate crisis. Drawing on in-depth interviews, first-hand observations at “data for good” events, intergovernmental and international organizational reports, and media publicity, we evaluate the logic driving Data for Climate Action initiatives, examining the implications of applying commercial datasets and expertise to environmental problems. Despite the increasing adoption of Data for Climate Action paradigms in government and public sector efforts to address climate change, we argue Data for Climate Action is better seen as a strategy to legitimate extractive, profit-oriented data practices by companies than a means to achieve global goals for environmental sustainability.

Introduction: Mentoring programs minimize stress and anxiety in recent graduates and in newly recruited nurses, guiding their careers and enabling them to retain their skills and correctly care for patients. The objective of this scoping review is to explore and summarize the existing literature on mentoring models and programs in the clinical nursing context. Methods: The databases searched include PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Epistemonikos, Cuiden, Scielo, MEDES, OpenGrey, Trove and MedNar. Published and unpublished studies worldwide that included nurse mentoring programs in a clinical context, in public and private systems and primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare settings, and articles published in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese, were included. Nurse students and training specialists were excluded. The papers were screened by two independent reviewers. In cases of discrepancy, a third reviewer made the decision. Results: Eleven studies were included. Most of them were conducted in the USA. A wide range of nurse mentoring programs were identified with highly variable characteristics. The duration of the programs and the evaluation systems were different, but the expected results matched. Conclusions: Mentoring programs need more in-depth and extensive study. In spite of their differences, they all lead to improvements for nurses, patients and organizations. A gender influence was found in our results, which could be studied in future research.

Based on the analysis of publications of scholars and book practitioners the author formulates main features and definition of the bookselling network as a set of wholesale, wholesale-retail and retail bookselling enterprises under common management (a single management center and unified management principles), which sell the similar book and accompanying assortment of goods and services for personal and public (library) consumption to get profit. The world largest, having no analogues to date, national bookselling network was the unified state centralized system of the USSR State Printing Committee, which included 3,763 stores in 1988. After its disintegration in 1996-2000, the federal, regional and local bookselling networks started forming both in the center of Russia and in regions on other principles and in other ways. The phenomenon of the Russian book market at the turn of the XX and XXI centuries was a wholesale and retail book-selling company «Top-book» (1995-2011). The company built a system of logistics centers, developed and implemented various formats of the retail distribution network. By 2010, the «Top-Book» had over 500 stores in more than 230 Russian cities and sold above 3 million books a month. At the same time, the company's unprecedented pace of development required organizational changes: improving manageability, optimizing the budget expenditure part by reducing costs. The impossibility to solve the problems led the company to bankruptcy in 2011. The largest federal bookstore network enterprise in Russia by 2017 is the integrated retail network «Chitai-gorod» - «Bukvoed» over 528 enterprises in 167 cities of Russia. There are 55 stores in 21 cities of Siberia and the Far East. But the most significant for the regional book market is the activity of bookselling associations established in Siberia and the Far East. Mostly there are networks created by booksellers in the region, but publishing and book-selling holdings («Bichik», «Apex», «Novaya kniga», etc.) form networks to sale their own printed products as well.

Dementia friendly communities have been gaining increased recognition over the years. These communities play a large role in creating opportunities and welcoming spaces for people with dementia. The creation of dementia friendly communities has led to increased development in meaningful dementia friendly experiences including public outings, accessible services, and the creation of dementia friendly reading groups. Despite the effects of dementia, many people with dementia retain their ability to read, even if it is as a lower level. However, reading has remained largely ignored as a meaningful experience for people with dementia. Additionally, there are few resources regarding the creation of dementia friendly reading materials and what is required in order for them to be effective. As a result, there is a lack of appropriate and mature reading materials available for people with dementia. The goal of this study is to determine the necessary qualities of recreational dementia friendly reading materials, through a literature review and case study, and provide best practices for the development of future dementia friendly reading materials. There is a notable lack of research conducted in the library and information studies field, and related fields, regarding recreational dementia friendly reading materials. This study will assist in filling in a gap in the literature and help to establish basic criteria for creating appropriate dementia friendly reading materials.

Owing to this, the necessity for a new customer service policy or strategy becomes essential irrespective of the business size. Moreover, the capability of any company that wants to remain in existence and growth as well needs to understand its clients and also delivers necessary customer support to make available targeted client services and develop branded clients’ service policy. This understanding is conceivable via organized client service. The respective segment devises consumers who share similar market potentials. Big data philosophies and machine learning devise appropriate means of promoting better recognition and approval of computerized client segmentation methods in good turn of outdated business analytics that frequently lead to any meaningful approach that can keep or source for a new customer while the client disreputable is very growing by the day. This study makes use of the k-means clustering algorithm for this determination. The Sklearn public library was established for the k-Means algorithm and the package is competent by means of a 100-model two-parameters dataset generated or collected from the retail trade. Case overview/synopsis It was year 2009 when the largest hypermarket in Albania, “Do it Yourself”, opened its doors to the public by bringing in Albania an important investment. This investment was significant for the country because it materialized in the midst of the world economic crisis. The company hired 500 employees, a big number for the size of the country. The 160,000 m2 area facility is strategically located 6 km from Tirana International Airport and 8 km from the center of Tirana, the capital city. The interior of the Hypermarket Retail Store occupies 20,000 m2 retail, 12,000 m2 wholesale and 2,600 m2 office space. The rest is green space and parking. Megatek carries a range of 51,000 products in different categories as homemade decorations, lighting and electrical, building materials, tools, gardening, heating and cooling, painting, wood and flooring. The products are available at a brick and mortar store and also online; the products are also home delivered. The company has been devoted to contribute to consumer education, quality service delivery and quality products at competitive prices. Armed with eight years of continuing success, Dionis was facing a critical decision. Should he expand or stand pat? Should he diversify the activity or maintain focus? The developed enterprise intellectual brain neural network platform for industrial environment and health design driven by small data converts the wisdom knowledge of enterprise designers into data and helps enterprises retain design experience, accumulate design knowledge results, sort out the design process, and shorten the design cycle. The goal of this project is to combine artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of things, parameterization, and other computer technologies with the industrial environment and health design and development process of manufacturing enterprises to solve pain points for businesses and designers, as well as to develop and create a large-scale product-level general parameter intelligent design software. The development of this software project can greatly improve the work efficiency of designers, save the time spent by designers on low-end repetitive labor, and in turn promote designers to engage in more valuable creative work and realize the digitization of entire product life cycle. Study level/applicability This case is most relevant to upper-level undergraduate business students taking quality management, strategy and service management courses. It is also relevant to practitioners working in similar positions. The case is based on primary and secondary data, and all materials mentioned were taken from real work environments. Case overview In contemporary competitive markets, all entities face a growing challenge to retain customers by satisfying them. In this case study of Ajman Free Zone Authority (AFZA), which is a public entity which was started in 1988 with the aim of boosting industrial development in Ajman, it is seen that the entity (AFZA) recognized a competitive advantage by improving service quality. However, AFZA focused on implementing various service quality improvement initiatives for not only customers, but also for other stakeholders as well (e.g. employees, strategic partners, suppliers and society). AFZA sought to understand stakeholders' needs, which led to service excellence. The purpose of this case is to highlight how AFZA differentiated itself by using initiatives that focused on disparate stakeholders to achieve customer satisfaction. The concepts of service quality (SERVQUAL), total quality management (TQM) and continuous improvement offer insights into how to improve organizational performance. It highlights how AFZA used Stakeholder Theory to identify and then collaborate with stakeholders to attain best service quality outcomes. The case study is developed using both secondary and primary sources. Expected learning outcomes After reading and analysing this case study, the student will be able to identify stakeholders in a service-based entity; apply Deming's Cycle or SERVQUAL to suggest improvement programmes; describe relationships among all stakeholders; and describe initiatives that contribute to service excellence. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine whether companies recognised for the quality of their sustainability reporting are also adopting investor relations (IR) best practices for their IR webpages. Quality communications to all stakeholder groups may then speak to organisational transparency and integrated corporate communication management (CCM). Design/methodology/approach An ordinary least squares regression model was developed to test the hypothesis that companies with quality sustainability reporting also adopts best practices in online IR. Sustainability reporting quality was signalled by inclusion of the company in a socially responsible investment (SRI) index. IR quality was proxied by disclosure scores compiled from content analyses of investor relations webpages. Findings This study find that inclusion in the SRI Index was positively and significantly associated with online IR quality, while controlling for other variables associated with voluntary disclosure behaviour. Practical implications For retail and institutional investors in SRI Index companies, cost of information discovery is reduced as they can use the investor relations webpages as comprehensive source. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature on corporate transparency by operationalising reporting “transparency” in that it considers the combined communications output to both financial and non-financial stakeholder groupings. A 2 × 2 conceptual framework for corporate disclosures is proposed that reconciles legitimacy theory and voluntary disclosure theory as motivations. It also contributes to the paucity of research on the links between public relations and investor relations in corporate communications by demonstrating a joint contribution to transparency.

Food waste is food appropriate for human consumption but discarded in the retail or consumption process. In 2022, food waste accounts for 40.9% of Indonesia’s waste composition. Therefore, food waste community education is critical for reducing food waste. Community education can reach the young generation through workshops and social media. This research aims to evaluate various workshops and social media content in educating teenagers about food waste through community. The PRISMA guidelines become the foundation as a contribution to Sustainable Development Goals. We utilized databases such as EBSCO Host, SAGE, Taylor & Francis, and Wiley Online Library to search for relevant studies. This study’s approach is normative research including secondary data, comprehensive literature review such as workshops, social media, and food waste education journals in Indonesia. This systematic review examines food waste education content of workshops and social media in Indonesia also further content recommendations. This systematic review collected 52 papers, including journals and proceedings. The community education content in Indonesia focuses on recycling with 28.57%. Seminars/online campaigns dominate the education form with sustainable development goals (SDGs) achieved: climate action and zero hunger. This systematic review showed that it is essential to add actions toward food waste in the form of actual activities.

Purpose – The main aim of this paper is to identify whether user demographic characteristics, computer skills, user education, user assistance and user-friendly OPAC (online public access catalog) have an impact on their satisfaction in the context of users in an Indian university setting. Design/methodology/approach – The survey method was utilized and a questionnaire was designed to collect data. The study is based on a sample of the 384 questionnaires from the three universities located in the Union Territory of Chandigarh and Punjab State. To analyze the data collected, SPSS package (version 14.0) was used, and also to produce requisite cross-tabulations. Chi-square testing was performed to determine the association of user satisfaction with the variables covered in the study. Findings – The findings highlighted that overall there was a low degree of satisfaction among the users. With the exception of academic majors, in general, there were no significant differences between satisfaction and user demographic characteristics. Overall satisfaction was significantly higher for those who were possessed with adequate knowledge on OPAC, and had received staff assistance, as well as necessary education on OPAC. The study showed that satisfaction with ease of usage of OPAC was higher. It was also found that users were well-equipped with computers and had attained skills while frequently searching the web, however, it was also revealed that mere possession of computer skills was not sufficient for efficient use of OPAC, resulting in the attainment of a high level of satisfaction. Originality/value – The paper brings out the fact of how user demographic characteristics, computer skills, user education, user assistance, and user-friendly OPAC, influence user satisfaction in a university educational set up. The findings will be beneficial for increasing user satisfaction levels in order to retain existing OPAC users because OPAC will continue to be a necessary tool for accessing quality academic information available in both print and electronic format.

Background Scotland was the first country to implement minimum unit pricing for alcohol nationally. Minimum unit pricing aims to reduce alcohol-related harms and to narrow health inequalities. Minimum unit pricing sets a minimum retail price based on alcohol content, targeting products preferentially consumed by high-risk drinkers. This study comprised three components. Objectives This study comprised three components assessing alcohol consumption and alcohol-related attendances in emergency departments, investigating potential unintended effects of minimum unit pricing on alcohol source and drug use, and exploring changes in public attitudes, experiences and norms towards minimum unit pricing and alcohol use. Design We conducted a natural experiment study using repeated cross-sectional surveys comparing Scotland (intervention) and North England (control) areas. This involved comparing changes in Scotland following the introduction of minimum unit pricing with changes seen in the north of England over the same period. Difference-in-difference analyses compared intervention and control areas. Focus groups with young people and heavy drinkers, and interviews with professional stakeholders before and after minimum unit pricing implementation in Scotland allowed exploration of attitudes, experiences and behaviours, stakeholder perceptions and potential mechanisms of effect. Setting Four emergency departments in Scotland and North England (component 1), six sexual health clinics in Scotland and North England (component 2), and focus groups and interviews in Scotland (component 3). Participants Research nurses interviewed 23,455 adults in emergency departments, and 15,218 participants self-completed questionnaires in sexual health clinics. We interviewed 30 stakeholders and 105 individuals participated in focus groups. Intervention Minimum unit pricing sets a minimum retail price based on alcohol content, targeting products preferentially consumed by high-risk drinkers. Results The odds ratio for an alcohol-related emergency department attendance following minimum unit pricing was 1.14 (95% confidence interval 0.90 to 1.44; p = 0.272). In absolute terms, we estimated that minimum unit pricing was associated with 258 more alcohol-related emergency department visits (95% confidence interval –191 to 707) across Scotland than would have been the case had minimum unit pricing not been implemented. The odds ratio for illicit drug consumption following minimum unit pricing was 1.04 (95% confidence interval 0.88 to 1.24; p = 0.612). Concerns about harms, including crime and the use of other sources of alcohol, were generally not realised. Stakeholders and the public generally did not perceive price increases or changed consumption. A lack of understanding of the policy may have caused concerns about harms to dependent drinkers among participants from more deprived areas. Limitations The short interval between policy announcement and implementation left limited time for pre-intervention data collection. Conclusions Within the emergency departments, there was no evidence of a beneficial impact of minimum unit pricing. Implementation appeared to have been successful and there was no evidence of substitution from alcohol consumption to other drugs. Drinkers and stakeholders largely reported not noticing any change in price or consumption. The lack of effect observed in these settings in the short term, and the problem-free implementation, suggests that the price per unit set (£0.50) was acceptable, but may be too low. Our evaluation, which itself contains multiple components, is part of a wider programme co-ordinated by Public Health Scotland and the results should be understood in this wider context. Future work Repeated evaluation of similar policies in different contexts with varying prices would enable a fuller picture of the relationship between price and impacts. Digital personal data is increasingly framed as the basis of contemporary economies, representing an important new asset class. Control over these data assets seems to explain the emergence and dominance of so-called “Big Tech” firms, consisting of Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google/Alphabet, and Facebook. These US-based firms are some of the largest in the world by market capitalization, a position that they retain despite growing policy and public condemnation—or “techlash”—of their market power based on their monopolistic control of personal data. We analyse the transformation of personal data into an asset in order to explore how personal data is accounted for, governed, and valued by Big Tech firms and other political-economic actors (e.g., investors). However, our findings show that Big Tech firms turn “users” and “user engagement” into assets through the performative measurement, governance, and valuation of user metrics (e.g., user numbers, user engagement), rather than extending ownership and control rights over personal data per se. We conceptualize this strategy as a form of “techcraft” to center attention on the means and mechanisms that Big Tech firms deploy to make users and user data measurable and legible as future revenue streams.

Background Tobacco displays at point of sale have been shown to increase young people’s pro-smoking attitudes, susceptibility to smoking and smoking initiation. In Scotland, legislation that prohibited tobacco point-of-sale displays was implemented in large stores (i.e. those > 280 m2) in April 2013 and in small retailers in April 2015. Objective To assess the impact of the point-of-sale tobacco display ban on young people’s exposure to tobacco advertising, their attitudes to smoking and smoking susceptibility, and their risk of smoking initiation. Design Multimodal before-and-after study design using mixed methods to collect data at baseline (2013) and then longitudinally for 4 years. Setting Four main study communities in the central belt of mainland Scotland, UK, purposively selected to reflect two levels of urbanity (urban vs. small town) and two levels of deprivation (high vs. medium/low). Four matched communities. Participants In the main study communities, 94 tobacco retail outlets. All Secondary 2 (aged 13 years) and Secondary 4 (aged 15 years) pupils in 2013 and 2014 together with all Secondary 1 to Secondary 6 (aged 12–17 years) pupils in 2015–17. This included 6612 pupils who completed 14,344 questionnaires over 5 years. Three hundred and eighty-two participants in 80 focus groups who were recruited from Secondary 2 and Secondary 4 in 2013–17. In matched communities, 24 retail panel members in 2013–17. Main outcome measures Tobacco product and tobacco storage visibility, density of retail outlets (the number of retailers in a pre-defined area such as a residential neighbourhood), tobacco product exposure, brand awareness, perceived accessibility of tobacco, pro-smoking attitudes, pro-smoking norms, smoking susceptibility and smoking initiation. Data platform and methods The study had four components – a mapping and spatial analysis of retail outlets; a tobacco marketing audit, including retail panel interviews in matched communities; school surveys; and focus group discussions with secondary school pupils. Limitations The study was based on a small number of communities and did not include communities in remote areas. Results Compliance with the point-of-sale legislation in Scotland was high. This led to a large reduction in the visibility of tobacco products in retail outlets. However, when the results were stratified by socioeconomic status, declines in retailer density, weighted by total product visibility, were restricted to the least disadvantaged tertile of participants. Nevertheless, the implementation of the legislation was associated with a reduction in risk of both smoking susceptibility and smoking initiation in young people, as well as a reduction in the perceived accessibility of tobacco and in pro-smoking attitudes after both the partial and the comprehensive bans were introduced. Conclusions The Scottish point-of-sale legislation has been successful in reducing the overall visibility of tobacco products and is associated with improvements in attitudinal and behavioural outcomes in young people. However, cues that tobacco is for sale are still highly visible, particularly in retail outlets in areas of deprivation. In addition, the increase in retailer density that was observed after 2015 increased inequalities in product visibility. There was also evidence that the emergence of e-cigarettes may have disrupted the full impact of the legislation. Future work Our research indicates that further research is needed to examine the longitudinal relationships between tobacco outlet availability and product visibility inequalities; and the impact of e-cigarettes and standardised packaging on smoking initiation and prevalence. Theoretical basis This case focuses on valuation using various methods to price a firm. Students attempting this case should know the basics of how to value a company using discounted cash flow, comparable multiples and comparable transactions. Students will need to calculate the weighted average cost of capital using comparable companies and the capital asset pricing model and determine differences in value created by an acquisition vs a leveraged buyout (LBO). The case also discusses qualitative issues in mergers, such as fit between target and acquirer, integration issues, potential high debt from LBO. Research methodology This case was library-researched, using Amazon and Whole Foods public filings and business press papers. Case overview/synopsis Whole Foods Markets received a buyout offer from Amazon. Whole Foods could solicit offers from other firms, including firms more directly in the grocery business. Whole Foods also considered a management buyout or purchase by a private equity firm. Whole Foods had underperformed, with a falling stock price and reduced profitability. Amazon’s bid was attractive, a premium of about 40 per cent over Whole Foods’ pre-merger stock price. Whole Foods also wanted to consider issues such as culture. Whole Foods’ strategy was to sell organic foods at premium prices, while Amazon was a retail discounter with a largely online business. Complexity academic level This case is appropriate for graduate students at the end of their introductory course or for graduate or undergraduate students in a corporate finance elective, particularly a merger/restructuring elective. The case has been used in an advanced undergraduate finance elective, with a team presenting the case to the class, with remaining students in the class required to write case summaries and questions for the presenting group.

Case overview This case demonstrates the dilemma of a founder, cum entrepreneur dealing with the issue related to a change in operating days that would affect her business profitability in the kindergarten industry. The case begins with the problem faced by Azizah Ayob, the founder and entrepreneur of Taska Kyrana when she hears that the state minister of Johor has announced that business operation days will be changed from Sunday to Friday with effect from 1 January 2014. The change would be applicable to government institutions in the state. However, businesses and corporations in the private sector can choose to continue observing Saturday-Sunday weekends or switch to the new official rest days of Friday-Saturday. As customers of Taska Kyrana consist of parents working in public and private sectors, as well as Singaporean parents, Ayob needs to choose either to follow the state requirement or to maintain the usual operation days. Expected learning outcomes Using this case, the students should be able to understand the need for institutional support for an entrepreneur; understand a possible growth strategy to cope with the volatile situation; understand the importance of a proper segmentation strategy to target the right group of customers; and understand the importance of a promotional strategy to attract new customers and to retain the existing one in a volatile situation.
