This study was carried out with the aim of estimating the degree of gastrointestinal helminth infection in goats on the Northern Plateau of Santa Catarina. Twelve young females and 11 adult females were used. Every 28 days, feces samples were taken to quantify the nematode eggs per gram of feces (EPG). Larval culturing was performed on a pool of positive samples from the same group. The fecal egg counts (FECs) ranged from zero to 10,400 EPG in the young group and zero to 7,600 EPG in the adult group. The mean FECs were between 583.3 and 4441.7 in the young group and between 418.2 and 2181.8 in the adult group. Eggs of the order Strongylida and genera Moniezia and Toxocara, and oocysts of Coccidia, were observed. The young animals were more affected and Haemonchus was the most prevalent genus in the samples.

ABSTRACT Micafungin is an echinocandin with potent activity against Candida spp. Hematogenous Candida meningoencephalitis (HCME) is a frequent complication of disseminated Candida infection in premature infants. A preclinical model of HCME suggests that micafungin may be an effective agent for this syndrome, but relatively high weight-based dosages are required. This prompted the further study of the safety and pharmacokinetics (PK) of micafungin in infants. Here, we describe the population pharmacokinetics of micafungin in 47 infants with a proven or presumptive diagnosis of disseminated candidiasis, who received 0.75, 1.5, 3, 7, 10, and 15 mg/kg of micafungin. The drug was infused daily, and samples were taken in the first dosing interval and at steady state. Serum concentrations were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Data were modeled using an allometric pharmacokinetic model using a three-fourths scaling exponent for clearance and parameters normalized to a 70-kg adult. Drug exposures were estimated using Monte Carlo simulation. Optimal sampling times were determined using D-optimal design theory. The fit of the allometric model to the data was highly acceptable. The pharmacokinetics of micafungin were linear. The weight-normalized estimates of clearance and volume of distribution approximated those previously described for adults. The original population parameter values could be recapitulated in the Monte Carlo simulations. A dosage of 10 mg/kg/day resulted in 82.6% of patients with areas under the concentration-time curve (AUCs) that are associated with near-maximal decline in fungal burden within the central nervous system (CNS).

ABSTRACT The rotational evolution of a young stellar population can give informations about the rotation pattern of more evolved clusters. Combined with rotational period values of thousands of young stars and theoretical propositions about the redistribution and loss of stellar angular momentum, it allows us to trace the rotational history of stars according to their mass. We want to investigate how internal and environmental changes on single stars can change the rotational evolution of a young stellar population. We run Monte Carlo simulations of a young cluster composed by solar mass stars of 0.5, 0.8 and 1.0 M⊙ from 1 to 550 Myr taking into account observational and theoretical parameters. In order to compare our results with the observations we run Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests. Our standard model is able to reproduce some clusters younger than h Per and marginally M37, which is 550 Myr old. Varying the disk fraction or the initial period distribution did not improve the results. However, when we run a model with a finer mass grid the Pleiades can be also reproduced. Changing the initial mass distribution to be similar to the empirical ONC mass function also gives good results. Modeling the evolution of a young synthetic cluster from pre-main sequence to early main sequence considering physical mechanisms of extraction and exchange of angular momentum can not be achieved successfully for all clusters for which we have enough rotational data. Clusters of about the same age present different rotational behaviors due perhaps to differences in their initial conditions.

The research is conducted based on the novel The Count of Monte Cristo, written by a French writer Alexander Dumas. The focus goes to anguish experienced by the protagonist of the novel, Edmond Dante, a young and handsome sailor with a brilliant prospects in career making him plunged into life of anguish. He is arrested for no reason, sent to jail with inhuman treatment. Descriptive qualitative method is applied to reveal that literary works are mirrors of all the occurrences in society. This is in line with the sociology of literature also implemented here as the approach to further analysis of the subject matters having three aspects to be used as a literary research guidelines: social contexts of the author, already showed by the author, literature as the reflection of society, revealed through the text tending to social reality and functions of literature as entertainer or remodel of society, exposed through the responses of the readers. The results show that the novel contains anguish subdivided into Non-procedural Arrest and Inhuman Imprisonment covering the whole study.

Abstract Accurate stellar ages are essential for our understanding of the star formation history of the Milky Way and Galactic chemical evolution, as well as to constrain exoplanet formation models. Gyrochronology, a relationship between stellar rotation and age, appears to offer a reliable age indicator for main-sequence (MS) stars over the mass range of approximately 0.6–1.3 M ⊙. Those stars lose their angular momentum due to magnetic braking and as a result their rotation speeds decrease with age. Although current gyrochronology relations have been fairly well tested for young MS stars with masses greater than 1 M ⊙, primarily in young open clusters, insufficient tests exist for older and lower mass MS stars. Binary stars offer the potential to expand and fill in the range of ages and metallicity over which gyrochronology can be empirically tested. In this paper, we demonstrate a Monte Carlo approach to evaluate gyrochronology models using binary stars. As examples, we used five previously published wide binary pairs. We also demonstrate a Monte Carlo approach to assess the precision and accuracy of ages derived from each gyrochronology model. For the traditional Skumanich models, the age uncertainties are σ age/age = 15%–20% for stars with B − V = 0.65 and σ age/age = 5%–10% for stars with B − V = 1.5 and rotation period P ≤ 20 days.

Abstract This paper describes my research on fish population dynamics, which has aimed to improve the information available for management and conservation. Through numerous collaborations, my research program addressed three main objectives. (1) Increase the understanding of spatial and temporal variation in productivity of fish populations. (2) Quantify uncertainties and risks in fishery systems and their implications for management and conservation. (3) Develop methods to reduce those uncertainties and risks. To help young scientists, I present 11 general lessons, as well as some specific advice, that emerged from that research. The general lessons include pursuing a path of continuous learning, going beyond your comfort zone to broaden your skills and knowledge, and collaborating with others. More specific advice for fisheries scientists includes evaluating the bias and precision of parameter estimation methods via Monte Carlo simulations, and considering multiple models of whole fishery systems. This paper also illustrates, with examples, how the understanding of some aspects of fish population dynamics has evolved, at least from the limited perspective of my own group's research.

"Young measure" is an abstract notion from mathematical measure theory.  Originally, the notion appeared in the context of some variational problems related to the analysis of sequences of “fast” oscillating of functions.  From the formal point of view the Young measure  may be treated as a continuous linear functional defined on the space of Carathéodory integrands satisfying certain regularity conditions. Calculating an explicit form of specific Young measure is a very important task.  However, from a strictly mathematical standpoint  it is a very difficult problem not solved as yet in general. Even more difficult would be the problem of calculating Lebasque’s integrals with respect to such measures. Based on known formal results it can be done only in the most simple cases.  On the other hand in many real-world applications it would be enough to learn only some of the most important probabilistic  characteristics  of the Young distribution or learn only approximate values of the appropriate integrals. In such a case a possible solution is to adopt Monte Carlo techniques. In the presentation we propose three different algorithms designed for simulating random variables distributed according to the Young measures  associated with piecewise functions.  Next with the help of computer simulations we compare their statistical performance via some benchmarking problems. In this study we focus on the accurateness of the distribution of the generated sample.

AbstractWe present constraints on the variability and binarity of young stars in the central 10 arcseconds (~ 0.4 pc) of the Milky Way Galactic Center (GC) using Keck Adaptive Optics data over a 12 year baseline. Given our experiment’s photometric uncertainties, at least 36% of our sample’s known early-type stars are variable. We identified eclipsing binary systems by searching for periodic variability. In our sample of spectroscopically confirmed and likely early-type stars, we detected the two previously discovered GC eclipsing binary systems. We derived the likely binary fraction of main sequence, early-type stars at the GC via Monte Carlo simulations of eclipsing binary systems, and find that it is at least 32% with 90% confidence.

In this paper the influence of variability of Young modulus of the subsoil layers on the natural frequency of the beam-two-layered subsoil system was analyzed. Assuming the first layer was thinner and more rigid then the second one (10 and 20 times). The calculations were made by using deterministic and stochastic approach. In the stochastic approach, the spatial correlation of Young modulus of the subsoil along the length of both layers was taken into account. Two cases of the correlation were considered, i.e. without and with full correlation. Regarding the results of the authors’ research which were published in the previous article, in the calculations the full stochastic correlation of Young modulus of subsoil between both layers was taken into account. In order to solve the stochastic eigenvalue problem, Monte Carlo simulation techniques with Finite Element Method (FEM) were used. The present analysis is a continuation research demonstrated in the authors’ previous papers.

White dwarf stars are the most common end point of stellar evolution. The ultramassive white dwarfs are of special interest as they are related to type Ia supernovae explosions, merger events, and fast radio bursts. Ultramassive white dwarfs are expected to harbour oxygen-neon (ONe) cores as a result of single standard stellar evolution. However, a fraction of them could have carbon-oxygen (CO) cores. Recent studies, based on the new observations provided by the Gaia space mission, indicate that a small fraction of the ultramassive white dwarfs experience a strong delay in their cooling, which cannot be solely attributed to the occurrence of crystallisation, thus requiring an unknown energy source able to prolong their life for long periods of time. In this study, we find that the energy released by 22Ne sedimentation in the deep interior of ultramassive white dwarfs with CO cores and high 22Ne content is consistent with the long cooling delay of these stellar remnants. On the basis of a synthesis study of the white dwarf population, based on Monte Carlo techniques, we find that the observations revealed by Gaia can be explained by the existence of these prolonged youth ultramassive white dwarfs. Although such a high 22Ne abundance is not consistent with the standard evolutionary channels, our results provide evidence for the existence of CO-core ultramassive white dwarfs and for the occurrence of 22Ne sedimentation.

The characterization of young planet distribution is essential for our understanding of the early evolution of exoplanets. Here we conduct a systematic search for young planets from young open clusters and associations using the 2-min cadence TESS survey data. We obtain TESS light curves for a total of 1075 young stars, which are selected with the aid of Gaia data. There are a total of 16 possible transiting signals. After a thorough vetting process, some have been confirmed as planets, and others are likely caused by eclipsing binaries. The final sample contains six confirmed planets, of which one is a hot Jupiter. After accounting for survey completeness using a Monte Carlo simulation, we can put a 95% confidence level upper limit on the hot Jupiter (P < 10 days, Rp = 0.7–2.9 RJup) occurrence rate orbiting stars in young associations at <5.1% and a 68% confidence level upper limit at <2.5%. We estimate that a sample size of ∼5000 dwarf stars with 2-min cadence data will be needed to reach a 0.5% upper limit on the hot Jupiter occurrence rate, which is the typical hot Jupiter occurrence rate around main sequence stars. Thus, future studies with larger sample sizes are required to put more constraints on planet formation and evolution theories.

AbstractWe discuss the role of linear emission-line polarimetry in a wide set of stellar environments, involving the accretion disks around young pre-main sequence stars, to the aspherical outflows from O stars, luminous blue variables and Wolf-Rayet stars, just prior to explosion as a supernova or a gamma-ray burst. We predict subtle QU line signatures, such as single/double QU loops for un/disrupted disks. Whilst there is plenty of evidence for single QU loops, suggesting the presence of disrupted disks around young stars, current sensitivity (with S/N of order 1000) is typically not sufficient to allow for quantitative 3D Monte Carlo modeling. However, the detection of our predicted signatures is expected to become feasible with the massive improvement in sensitivity of extremely large mirrors.

They have also been at the centre of disputes over the authorial propriety of the drones that they record. This paper offers a material history of those tapes as they circulate online. By tracking and organizing the available bootlegs, I trace the ensemble’s changing sonic self-conception as it moved from a composer-led ensemble supporting Young’s saxophone improvisations to an egalitarian collective constituted in its dedication to the daily practice of listening from ‘inside the sound’.

This paper is the winner of the Young Scientist Award at the Asian Chemical Congress in Kuala Lumpur, 2007. Applying the Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) technique, we successfully investigated the effect of deposition rate on the growth pattern of an Alq3 thin film. In good agreement with experimental results, our simulation results indicate that there exists a transition growth in terms of the deposition rate that corresponds to the transition between the island growth and random deposition growth. In the regions of island growth (where the deposition rate is lower than 1.1 Å s–1) and random deposition growth (where the deposition rate is higher than 3 Å s–1), the surface morphology is not suitable for luminant devices because of a high roughness, a larger inner vacancy ratio at higher deposition rate, and low homogeneity at lower deposition rate conditions. Within the transition growth region (deposition rate is between 1.1 and 3.0 Å s–1), the homogeneity of the film surface improves as the deposition rate increases. Not only does the pattern of the island structures become blurred, but the inner vacancy ratio and surface roughness also remain low as the deposition rate increases. From our results, there may exist a deposition rate to optimize the Alq3 film with a suitable surface morphology for luminant devices.

Context. Very low-mass (VLM) stars and brown dwarfs (BDs) present a different rotational behaviour from their solar mass counterparts. Aims. We investigate the rotational evolution of young VLM stars and BDs using Monte Carlo simulations under the hypothesis of disk locking and stellar angular momentum conservation. Methods. We built a set of objects with masses ranging from 0.01 M⊙ to 0.4 M⊙ and considered models with single- and double-peaked initial period distributions with and without disk locking. An object is considered to be diskless when its mass accretion rate is below a given threshold. Results. Models with initial single-peaked period distributions reproduce the observations well given that BDs rotate faster than VLM stars. We observe a correlation between rotational period and mass when we relax the disk locking hypothesis, but with a shallower slope compared to some observational results. The angular momentum evolution of diskless stars is flatter than it is for stars with a disk which occurs because the moment of inertia of objects less massive than 0.2 M⊙ remains pratically constant for a time scale that increases with decreasing stellar mass. Conclusions. Comparing our results with the available observational data we see that disk locking is not as important in the low-mass regime and that the rotational behaviour of VLM stars and BDs is different from what is seen in their solar mass counterparts.

The climate can influence the non-appearance of environments conducive to the proliferation of vectors of respiratory diseases, in addition to influencing diseases and conditions related to climatic phenomena. In addition, the objective of this study was to verify the spatio-temporal dynamics between the occurrence of atmospheric conditions and the manifestations of respiratory conditions outside the Amazon and southwestern Pará. The period from 2008 to 2020 was adopted for the municipalities of Belterra and Monte Alegre (Baixo Amazonas) and Itaituba (Southwest). Use of meteorological data, made available on the digital platform of the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) and respiratory education data through the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS). Data were collected from adult, young and infant patients (sample only). Model of Multiple Linear Regression or Regression using principal component analysis (PCA), aiming to validate a possible association between the manifestations of respiratory conditions and different meteorological conditions, with the analyzes being carried out without free statistical software R. Note that there is a linearly significant correlation (p <0.05) between the least humid period in cases of respiratory diseases in Belterra and Monte Alegre. In Monte Alegre it was possible to show a significant correlation between cool and less cool. In Itaituba, no correlation was observed between seasons and respiratory conditions. Finally, in Belterra, Itaituba and Monte Alegre, the number of hospitalizations for respiratory doses seems to increase, not the transition period, specifically the period from June to August. In this article, I propose that studies of music’s links to religion go beyond reductionistic links between religious traditions and music forms (e.g., “Music and/in Islam”), and look instead at ways in which music responds to or expresses concerns or aspirations that are linked to religion or spirituality. The article further proposes that, should this approach be adopted, the explosion of radical improvised music-making in the 1960s (associated with such artists as the Grateful Dead, John Coltrane, La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Albert Ayler, etc.) is a very promising site for investigation.

This paper describes the development and implementation of a molecular simulation model to predict the nucleation process during the condensation of heavy components of the gas natural mixtures of linear alkane (C1 - C6 and C9) at transport conditions (10-40 bar). Specifically, it was used the Monte Carlo method with configurational-bias, the united-atom force field known as “Transferable Potentials for Phase Equilibria (TraPPE-UA)," and the Umbrella sampling technique. The growth of the droplets was evaluated with the model of Young considering numbers of Knudsen below 0.1. The simulation results obtained for the droplet nucleation and growth were compared with experimental data reported in the literature with the aim of validating the implemented models. The simulations predict a droplets size of 2.09 μm which is in good agreement with the experimental results.

ABSTRACT Cefotaxime is the first-line treatment for meningitis in neonates and young infants. However, limited data on cefotaxime cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations in neonates and young infants were available. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the penetration of cefotaxime into CSF in neonates and young infants. Blood and CSF samples were collected from neonates and young infants treated with cefotaxime using an opportunistic pharmacokinetic sampling strategy, and concentrations were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The analysis was performed using NONMEM and R software. Thirty neonates and young infants (postmenstrual age range, 25.4 to 47.4 weeks) were included. A total of 67 plasma samples and 30 CSF samples were available for analysis. Cefotaxime plasma and CSF concentrations ranged from 2.30 to 175.42 mg/liter and from 0.39 to 25.38 mg/liter, respectively. The median ratio of the CSF concentration to the plasma concentration was 0.28 (range, 0.06 to 0.76). Monte Carlo simulation demonstrated that 88.4% and 63.9% of hypothetical neonates treated with 50 mg/kg of body weight three times a day (TID) would reach the pharmacodynamic target (the percentage of the dosing interval that the free antimicrobial drug concentration remains above the MIC, 70%) using the standard EUCAST MIC susceptibility breakpoints of 2 mg/liter and 4 mg/liter, respectively. The penetration of cefotaxime into the CSF of neonates and young infants was evaluated using an opportunistic sampling approach. A dosage regimen of 50 mg/kg TID could cover the most causative pathogens with MICs of <2 mg/liter. Individual dosage adaptation was required for more resistant bacterial strains, such as Staphylococcus aureus.

Abstract The existence of black holes (BHs) with masses in the range between stellar remnants and supermassive BHs has only recently become unambiguously established. GW190521, a gravitational wave signal detected by the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration, provides the first direct evidence for the existence of such intermediate-mass BHs (IMBHs). This event sparked and continues to fuel discussion on the possible formation channels for such massive BHs. As the detection revealed, IMBHs can form via binary mergers of BHs in the “upper mass gap” (≈40–120 M ⊙). Alternatively, IMBHs may form via the collapse of a very massive star formed through stellar collisions and mergers in dense star clusters. In this study, we explore the formation of IMBHs with masses between 120 and 500 M ⊙ in young, massive star clusters using state-of-the-art Cluster Monte Carlo models. We examine the evolution of IMBHs throughout their dynamical lifetimes, ending with their ejection from the parent cluster due to gravitational radiation recoil from BH mergers, or dynamical recoil kicks from few-body scattering encounters. We find that all of the IMBHs in our models are ejected from the host cluster within the first ∼500 Myr, indicating a low retention probability of IMBHs in this mass range for globular clusters today. We estimate the peak IMBH merger rate to be  ≈ 2 Gpc − 3 yr − 1 at redshift z ≈ 2.

Young adults are a substantial driver of lagging vaccination against COVID-19 worldwide. We aimed to understand what vaccine or vaccination environment attributes may affect young adults’ vaccine inclination. We contacted a convenience sample of 1415 students to recruit a minimum of 150 individuals for a web-based discrete choice experiment. The respondents were asked to choose one of two hypothetical vaccines, defined by six attributes—vaccine efficacy, risk of mild side effects, protection duration, administration route, recommender, and travel time to the vaccination site. Individual preferences were calculated with the Markov chain Monte Carlo hierarchical Bayes estimation. A total of 445 individuals (mean age 24.4 years, 272 (61.1%) women) completed the survey between 22 March and 3 May 2021. Vaccine protection duration (28.3 (95% CI, 27.0–29.6)) and vaccine efficacy in preventing COVID-19 (27.5 (95% CI, 26.3–28.8)) were the most important, followed by the risk of vaccine side effects (17.3 (95% CI, 16.2–18.4)). Individuals reluctant or unsure about vaccination (21.1%) prioritized the potential for mild side effects higher and vaccine efficacy lower than the vaccine-inclined individuals. New vaccination programs that target young adults should emphasize the protection duration, low risk of vaccine side effects, and high efficacy.

Propolis production by honey bees is the result of a selective harvest of exudates from plants in the neighborhood of the hive. This product is used in Argentina as a food supplement and alternative medicine. The aim of this study was to determine the botanical origin of propolis from the arid regions of Monte of Argentina using rapid histochemical techniques and by comparison of TLC and HPLC-DAD chromatographic profiles with extract profiles obtained from Zuccagnia punctata, Larrea divaricata and Larrea cuneifolia, plant species that grow in the study area as a natural community named “jarillal”. Microscopical analysis revealed the presence of several Z. punctata structures, such as multicellular trichomes, leaflets, stems and young leaves. Remarkable was the richness of the propolis in two bioactive chalcones, also present in Z. punctata resin; these compounds can be regarded as possible markers for propolis identification and justify its use as a dietary supplement, functional food and medicinal product. This study indicates that the source of resin used by honey bees to produce propolis in the Monte region of Argentina is only Z. punctata, a native shrub widespread in this phytogeographical region, while other more abundant species ( L. divaricata and L. cuneifolia) in the region were not found, indicating that this propolis could be defined as a mono-resin, type- Zuccagnia.

In the present work, theoretical approaches, based on grain orientation dependent Young’s modulus and Schmid factor are used to describe the influence of local grain orientation on crack initiation behaviour of the coarse grained nickel base superalloy René80. Especially for strongly anisotropic crystal structures with large grain size, such as the investigated material, the local elastic properties must be taken into account for assessment of fatigue crack initiation. With an extension of Schmid’s law, the resulting shear stress amplitude, which triggers local cyclic plastic deformation, can be calculated depending on local Young`s modulus and Schmid factor. A Monte Carlo simulation with 100,000 samples shows how random grain orientation affects these parameters. Furthermore, the product of Young`s modulus and Schmid factor (called E·m) is used as a parameter to determine how grain orientation influences resulting shear stress amplitude for given total strain amplitude. In addition to the theoretical work using that approach, this model is also validated using isothermal LCF experiments by determining local grain orientation influence on the crack initiation site using SEM-EBSD analyses.

ABSTRACT We exploit more than 1000 star cluster Monte Carlo models from the mocca Survey Database I, to infer the local rate density of white dwarf (WD) tidal disruption events (TDEs) in globular clusters (GCs) and young massive clusters (YMCs). We suggest that the WD TDE rate for GCs and YMCs in the local Universe is ∼90–500 yr−1 Gpc−3, with 90 per cent of WD TDEs occurring in GCs. The total WD TDE rate density is ∼9–50 times larger than estimated previously. Our results show that thermonuclear explosions induced by WD TDEs can be observed at a rate of ∼100–550 yr−1 by the next generation optical surveys, such as the Legacy Survey of Space & Time by the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. We also find that massive WDs are preferentially disrupted as a result of mass segregation, and that 20 per cent of exploding WDs have mass$\gtrsim 1.0 \, {\rm M}_\odot$ despite the small population of such WDs.

Abstract Since our previous publication of organ dose for the pediatric CT cohort in the UK, there have been questions about the magnitude of uncertainty in our dose estimates. We therefore quantified shared and unshared uncertainties in empirical CT parameters extracted from 1073 CT films (1978–2008) from 36 hospitals in the study and propagated these uncertainties into organ doses using Monte Carlo random sampling and NCICT organ dose calculator. The average of 500 median brain and marrow doses for the full cohort was 35 (95% confidence interval: 30–40) mGy and 6 (5–7) mGy, respectively. We estimated that shared uncertainty contributed ~99% of coefficient of variation of median brain doses in brain scans compared to unshared uncertainty (1% contribution). We found that the previous brain doses were slightly underestimated for <1990 and overestimated for >1990 compared to the results in the current study due to the revised CTDI models based on CT films.
