This study was carried out with the aim of estimating the degree of gastrointestinal helminth infection in goats on the Northern Plateau of Santa Catarina. Twelve young females and 11 adult females were used. Every 28 days, feces samples were taken to quantify the nematode eggs per gram of feces (EPG). Larval culturing was performed on a pool of positive samples from the same group. The fecal egg counts (FECs) ranged from zero to 10,400 EPG in the young group and zero to 7,600 EPG in the adult group. The mean FECs were between 583.3 and 4441.7 in the young group and between 418.2 and 2181.8 in the adult group. Eggs of the order Strongylida and genera Moniezia and Toxocara, and oocysts of Coccidia, were observed. The young animals were more affected and Haemonchus was the most prevalent genus in the samples.

ABSTRACT Micafungin is an echinocandin with potent activity against Candida spp. Hematogenous Candida meningoencephalitis (HCME) is a frequent complication of disseminated Candida infection in premature infants. A preclinical model of HCME suggests that micafungin may be an effective agent for this syndrome, but relatively high weight-based dosages are required. This prompted the further study of the safety and pharmacokinetics (PK) of micafungin in infants. Here, we describe the population pharmacokinetics of micafungin in 47 infants with a proven or presumptive diagnosis of disseminated candidiasis, who received 0.75, 1.5, 3, 7, 10, and 15 mg/kg of micafungin. The drug was infused daily, and samples were taken in the first dosing interval and at steady state. Serum concentrations were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Data were modeled using an allometric pharmacokinetic model using a three-fourths scaling exponent for clearance and parameters normalized to a 70-kg adult. Drug exposures were estimated using Monte Carlo simulation. Optimal sampling times were determined using D-optimal design theory. The fit of the allometric model to the data was highly acceptable. The pharmacokinetics of micafungin were linear. The weight-normalized estimates of clearance and volume of distribution approximated those previously described for adults. The original population parameter values could be recapitulated in the Monte Carlo simulations. A dosage of 10 mg/kg/day resulted in 82.6% of patients with areas under the concentration-time curve (AUCs) that are associated with near-maximal decline in fungal burden within the central nervous system (CNS).

Abstract: The Bourgoyne and Young Model (BYM) is used to determine the rate of penetration in oil well drilling processes. To achieve this the model must be parameterized with coefficients that are estimated on the basis of prior experience. Since drilling is a physical process, measurement data may include noise and the model may naturally fail to represent it correctly. In this study the BYM coefficients are determined in the form of probability distributions, rather than fixed values, propagating the uncertainties present in the data and the model itself. This work therefore describes a method that performs a Bayesian inference conducted by a Monte Carlo Markov Chain algorithm. The results were satisfactory and the probability distributions obtained offer improved insight into the influence of different coefficients on the simulation results. At last, a discussion is carried of open possibilities for improving the proposed method.

Resumo:
Minimalism was a period in music throughout the postmodern twentieth century initiated by the compositions of La Monte Young (1935-- ), followed by those of Terry Riley (1935--), developed by Steve Reich (1936-- ), and evolved by Philip Glass (1937-- ). Minimalist music was influenced by the non-Western music of India, created by the constant repetition of musical patterns to generate a hypnotic state on the listener through stasis. The size of the minimalist audience has continually increased from the New York City loft-based performances of La Monte Young to the opera house performances of Philip Glass. The composer's goals for an audience, his musical adaptation, and the effect of stasis contribute to the differences in audience size. These three factors are examined through each composer's biography, early and late compositions, and concert reviews of the premieres. The techniques utilized by each composer have become more effective in the creation of stasis from the compositions of Young to Glass. The biographies of the four minimalists, their compositions, and the premieres serve as an excellent source in the examination of the connection between the composer and the audience.

This thesis explores a series of relationships between music and acoustics in order to develop a basis for discussing and critiquing aesthetics in post-Cagean experimental music. Specifically, it examines the acoustic and aesthetic theories that inform the practice of American composers La Monte Young and Alvin Lucier. One particular theme - the sine wave - emerges, both as a prominent feature in the work of these two composers, and also as a nexus point between music and acoustics. Pursuing this theme, the thesis begins by looking at issues in the science, technology, and ideology of acoustics in relation to the study of musical sound in the late nineteenth century. It then aims to situate the sine wave historically, culturally and technologically within a range of scientific and aesthetic practices in operation in the first half of the twentieth century. Finally, it explores the deployment of concepts from the field of acoustics by artists of the avant-garde, and considers what contribution these factors played in broadening the developing discourse of sound within the arts. These discussions then inform detailed investigations into the work of both Lucier and Young, examining their use of sine waves to explore and produce simple acoustic phenomena.

The musical minimalism of La Monte Young, Terry, Riley, Steve Reich and Philip Glass had been called, among other labels, repetitive, modular, pulse, process, and static – and as a result, a-teleological – music before the name minimalism finally caught on. Since those labels reflect, at least in part, some of the features commonly found in the style, this study attempts to define the concepts behind such labels. This work also discusses some of the most typical procedures adopted by the four composers aforementioned, pointing their changing style during the 1960s and 70s, period often used as a reference for studies.

Abstract Seventy-eight prepubertal children 3 to 10 years old (mean age 5,67 years, range 2.4 - 10.5 years), with symptoms suggestive of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) were studied. Based on overnight polysomnography (PSG) results, 32 children were classified as having OSAS, whereas 46 children were considered as primary snorers (PSs'), when an obstructive apnea-hypopnea index (AHIO) of over one was considered abnormal. Symptoms, signs and findings in these two groups were compared in a cross-sectional study. Fifty-eight of the children were retrieved for a follow-up visit, which was scheduled six months from the first visit. The children with an initial AHIO of 2 or over (n = 21) had been subjected to adenotonsillectomy swiftly after the first visit, whereas the others (n = 37) were observed without intervention. The changes in symptoms, signs and findings were analysed within and between these groups. Relative risk (RR) ratios were calculated in order to find clinical symptoms and signs predicting OSAS in snoring children. Observed apneas, restless sleep, constant snoring and tonsillar hypertrophy were significantly associated with an increased risk of OSAS. Dental arch measurements indicated that AHIO was significantly associated with the amount of overjet, suggesting that altered breathing may affect the dentofacial morphology. Nasalance measurements revealed no group differences between the OSAS children and PSs'. Adenotonsillectomy had no significant influence on the nasalence scores. Measurements of nasalance seem to contribute little to the diagnostics of OSAS in children. At the first visit the mean circulating concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) were of the same magnitude in the OSAS children, the PSs' and the age-matched control group, but both the OSAS children and the PSs' had lower IGF-binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) concentrations than the control subjects. At the second visit a significant increase of the peripheral concentrations of IGF-1 and IGFBP-3, along with increases in weight for height and BMI were observed in the surgically treated children, whose respiratory parameters and symptoms had improved highly significantly, as well. These results indicate that the growth of children with obstructed nighttime breathing is potentially affected through impaired growth hormone secretion. None of the primary snorers developed OSAS during the observation period, which finding suggests a favorable prognosis for primary snoring in children.

The aids epidemic affects the life of children and youngs, not only because of the presence of HIV/Aids, but also because of the sickness, death of parents, stigma, discrimination, and others. This research had the main intention of understanding the meaning of being an orphan to young people that have lost one or both parents in result of aids and the stigma that is included in this process. Nineteen interviews were studied and the public included youngs between 15 and 22 years old, living in São Paulo, between 2005 and 2007. In this report, the meaning attributed to death and all the ritual involving it was concepted as social constructed and the death regarding aids was studied with the stigma that around aids since the beginning of the epidemic. It was pointed 5 issues related to orphanhood: difficulties related with speaking about parents death by AIDS; missing of mothers care; the challenges of being independent; do not feel as an orphan and feeling sadness because of death. The process of stigma was divided as felt stigma and enacted stigma and happened at school, at friends house, at the streets and with a date. All the stores and scenes of stigmas were courtesy stigma, because were related with parents death. With this report it is possible to realize that beeing an orphans in result of aids affects direct youngs living. They get used to live with adversity, family support, mainly by mothers family. Not too much is known about orphans, even less if they do not live with HIV/AIDS, because health services do not keep contact after the person in the family with AIDS dies. It is very important that aids programs includes the expectations and the way of seeing life of those people in their programs, so they can guarantee respect and theirs rights.

AbstractThis case study explores an eye-gaze technology intervention for a young adult with severe physical and speech difficulties and visual impairments. Data were collected over a six-month intervention period encompassing measures on pupil’s occupational performance of computer activities and psychosocial impact, and interviews with the user, the parents, and the teacher on the technology acceptability. The results showed that the six-month intervention enhanced the pupil’s performance in three computer activities and led to a positive psychosocial impact. The parent and teacher described the intervention as appropriate to increase the pupil’s self-expression and interaction with others, and there was no adverse event during the study period. The pupil demonstrated motivation to use the eye-gaze technology after the intervention continuously. In conclusion, this study shows that a young adult with severe motor impairments and visual problems can benefit from using eye-gaze technology to increase participation in leisure activities, communication, and social interactions.

AbstractEarlobe keloid is encountered in young adults with different etiologies, with some of them occurring spontaneously and others being secondary to earlobe piercing. In both sexes, the lesions may be limited to the fold or the external canthus or embed the posterior part of the ear. The rate of recurrence is higher than 80% when surgical excision is realized alone and associations of procedures are proposed. They may vary between authors, with some of them proposing excision and radiotherapy and others preferring excision supplemented by postoperative injections of corticosteroids, cryotherapy being also proposed as well as YAG lasers. In this clinical case, 5-FU 50 mg/mL injections were administered every 3 weeks before surgical excision. The patient was followed every month till the 14th month postoperation. The result was good with no recurrence.

AbstractAlthough there is some research on how very young children engage in mathematical activities, little is known about how teachers facilitate this engagement through digital tools. In this paper, the relationship between digital apps, kindergarten teachers’ facilitation and 18-month-old children’s mathematical engagement is explored. Artefact-centric activity theory was used to analyse video recordings of children and a kindergarten teacher engaging with three digital apps. The results show how children engaged with the mathematical activity of locating and that the teacher facilitated their engagement by following the children’s interests and adding verbal and body language to what the children did on the tablet they were using. The apps’ design supported the opportunities that the teachers had to facilitate children’s engagement with aspects of locating, to different degrees. The results provide information about the kinds of apps that could support the youngest children’s mathematical engagement, and how kindergarten teachers can facilitate young children’s digital explorations of locating.

AbstractIn rural areas where most of the food production takes place, nutritional deprivations are also high. In 2015–16, only 38% (45%) of 6–23-month-old children in rural (urban) India reported milk consumption at least once in the previous day with an average of 2.5 times among those who consumed. Though dairy milk plays a very important role in the growth of young children, very few studies have analysed the pattern of consumption as in this study, which also provides an understanding of its associated factors and relationship with a child’s height for age Z-score. The zero-inflated Poisson model estimates show that girls are less likely to be given milk but irrespective of gender, milk consumption increases with age. Breastfeeding affects both milk consumption and its frequency while other food items except eggs and other dairy reduce the chance of milk consumption but not its frequency. Mother’s education, economic status of the household, ownership of bovine, and higher supply of milk at the district level have differing effects on milk consumed compared to the frequency of milk consumed. Milk consumption and its frequency is positively associated with a child’s height provided it is an endogenous variable. Policies that strengthen affordability, availability, and awareness towards milk consumption would reduce large disparities in child stunting in India and improve its abysmally low global ranking.

Engineering problems are often characterized by significant uncertainty in their material parameters. Multilevel sampling methods are a straightforward manner to account for this uncertainty. The most well known multilevel method is the Multilevel Monte Carlo method (MLMC). First developed by Giles, see [1], this method relies on a hierarchy of successive refined Finite Element meshes of the considered engineering problem, in order to achieve a computational speedup. Most of the samples are taken on coarse and computationally cheap meshes, while a decreasing number of samples are taken on finer and computationally expensive meshes. Classically, the mesh hierarchy is constructed by selecting a coarse mesh discretization of the problem, and recursively applying an h-refinement approach to it, see [2]. This will be referred to as h-MLMC. However, in the h-MLMC mesh hierarchy, the number of degrees of freedom increases almost geometrical with increasing level, leading to a large computational cost. An efficient manner to reduce this computational cost, is by means of the novel sampling method called p-refined Multilevel Quasi-Monte Carlo (p-MLQMC), see [3]. The p-MLQMC method uses a hierarchy of p-refined Finite Element meshes, combined with a deterministic Quasi-Monte Carlo sampling rule. This combination significantly reduced the computational cost with respect to h-MLMC. However, the p-MLQMC method presents the practitioner with a challenge. This challenge consists in adequately incorporating the uncertainty, represented as a random field, in the Finite Element model. In previous work, see [4], we have tackled this challenge by investigating how the evaluation points, used to calculate point evaluations of the random field by means of the Karhunen-Loève (KL) expansion, need to be selected in order to achieve the lowest computational cost. We found that using sets of nested evaluation points across the mesh hierarchy, i.e., the Local Nested Approach (LNA), yields a speedup up to a factor 5 with respect to sets consisting of non-nested evaluation points, i.e., the Non-Nested Approach (NNA). Furthermore, we have shown that p-MLQMC-LNA yields a speedup up to a factor 70 with respected to h-MLMC. Currently, our research focus lies on implementing the use of higher order Quasi-Monte Carlo rules, and hierarchical shape functions in p-MLQMC. Both paths show promising results for further computational savings in the p-MLQMC method. All the aforementioned implementations are benchmarked on a slope stability problem, with spatially varying uncertainty in the ground. The chosen quantity of interest (QoI) consists of the vertical displacement of the top of the slope.[1] Michael B. Giles. Multilevel Monte Carlo path simulation. Oper. Res., 56(3):607–617, 2008. After graduating from university, Warda struggled a lot. For a few years, she had to take odd jobs for that had no security, days off or health insurance. Eventually she connected with Youth Participation and Employment (YPE) programme partner Casal Del Infants. With their support, she successfully entered the formal labour market. She was selected by Casal to join a jobs programme, where she was trained for one month as a quality control officer. After completing her training, she obtained a placement in maintenance at an automotive company. This was facilitated through Casal’s ‘Activa Counter’, its employment integration desk. This programme supports internships and helps young people to integrate into the private sector. The programme has gained in popularity over the years and has the potential to help many young people into work.

Resumo:
This paper evaluates the short-term impacts of a development project that aims to increase mango yields, sales of mango products, and the income of small mango farmers in rural Haiti. Various matching methods, in combination with difference-in-difference (DID), are used to deal with the potential selection bias associated with nonrandom treatment assignment. Robustness checks are conducted to investigate whether and to what extent the results are affected by the coexistence of other similar projects in the same sites. Rosenbaum bounds analysis is carried out to check the sensitivity of the estimated impacts---based on matching methods---to deviations from the conditional independence assumptions; the relative importance of unobserved factors in the decision to participate. Our results show that in a 16-month period, the project increased the number of young Francique trees planted---a type that has greater market and export potential than traditional mango varieties---and likely encouraged the adoption of best practices. But the project has not yet led to a noticeable increase in total sales. The adoption of improved production practices is too recent to translate into significant changes in production and sales. While the robustness check suggests that the results are not caused by the presence of other similar programs on the same sites, the Rosenbaum bounds sensitivity analysis suggests that the matching results are robust against potential "hidden bias" arising from unobserved outcome variables in some but not all cases.

Resumo:
From 2000 to 2003, FRONTIERS supported a study by the Center for Research on Environment, Health, and Population Activities to test communication-based models for improving young couples’ access to and use of reproductive health (RH) information and services in the Udaypur district of eastern Nepal. The 14-month intervention, undertaken as part of an RH project implemented by the Nepal Red Cross Society and the Center for Development and Population Activities, sought to improve social norms that leave young women vulnerable to health risks related to early marriage and childbearing and limited access to RH services. The study compared two experimental models with two control groups. The two experimental groups received training, assistance with group interaction, outreach, and educational materials about sexually transmitted infections and condom use. Researchers administered surveys to young married women in both the control and experimental sites before and after the intervention. As noted in this brief, communication-based support for mothers’ groups and newly formed youth communication groups improved RH knowledge and behavior among young married women in Nepal.

Testing alternative channels for providing emergency contraception to young women. Population Council, 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh2001.1030.

Resumo:
In September 1997, the Population Council and Lusaka’s University Teaching Hospital (UTH) launched a 15-month study to identify and explore the range of issues relating to the introduction of emergency contraception (EC) within a developing country context. The study allowed clinic-based family planning providers to accumulate enough first-hand experience to be able to identify strategies for overcoming difficulties associated with the introduction or delivery of EC services. One issue on most participants’ minds was the need to expand the delivery of EC services toward young women, especially out-of-school women, who are harder to reach. Participants recommended that future research activities look beyond school-based health facilities and focus on institutions such as pharmacists, peer counselors, youth clubs, community organizations, or even sports associations. The findings of the 1997 UTH study on EC indicated the kinds of facilities young people were likely to reject, but provided little indication of what types of outlets they might prefer. As noted in this report, the present study was designed with that objective in mind.
