This study entitled the influence of corporate governance mechanism on firm value with intellectual capital disclosure as an intervening variable. This study aims to examine the direct and indirect effect of board size, gender diversity, educational background, block holder ownership, and foreign ownership both simultaneously and partially on intellectual capital disclosure and firm value. This study examines the mediating effect of intellectual capital disclosure in the relationship between corporate governance mechanism and firm value. This study used the companies included in intellectual capital intensive industries in Indonesia Stock Exchange as the sample for 2017-2019. The sampling technique used in this study was purposive sampling, with 243 data from 81 companies. Analysis techniques used in this study were statistic descriptive, multiple regression, and path analysis used SPSS 23 for windows. The hypothesis testing results show that corporate governance mechanisms simultaneously influence intellectual capital disclosure (ICD) and firm value. Partially, only board size influences both ICD and substantial value, and educational background only influences strong value. The Sobel test shows that ICD doesn't mediate the effect of all variables related to corporate governance mechanism on firm value.

<p>This research was aimed to analyze the significant influence of profitability, investment opportunity set (ios), leverage and dividend policy partially or simultaneously on firm value. The sample used in this research was Industrial Services in Indonesia Stock Exchange period 2013 to 2015 as many as 28 companies taken by using purposive sampling technique. Hypothesis testing of research using multiple linear regression analysis by SPSS 21 for windows programs. This research found that: (1) profitability has significant influence partially on firm value; (2) investment opportunity set (ios) has significant influence partially on firm value; (3) leverage has no significant influence partially on firm value; (3) the dividend policy has no significant influence partially on firm value; (5) profitability, investment opportunity set (ios), leverage and dividend policy have significant influence simultaneously on firm value with influence value of 46.7%.</p>

The physiologic role of L-selectin shedding is unknown. Here, we investigate the effect of L-selectin shedding on firm adhesion and transmigration. In a tumor necrosis factor α–induced model of inflammation, inhibition of L-selectin shedding significantly increased firm adhesion and transmigration by a lymphocyte function–associated antigen (LFA)-1 and intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1–dependent mechanism. We examined the quality of leukocyte rolling and L-selectin–mediated signaling. Blockade of L-selectin shedding significantly reduced the “jerkiness” of leukocyte rolling, defined as the variability of velocity over time. A low level of jerkiness was also observed in the rolling of microbeads conjugated with L-selectin, a model system lacking the mechanism for L-selectin shedding. Inhibition of L-selectin shedding potentiated activation of LFA-1 and Mac-1 induced by L-selectin cross-linking as shown by activation epitope expression and binding of ICAM-1–conjugated beads. We conclude that inhibition of L-selectin shedding increases leukocyte adhesion and transmigration by (a) increasing leukocyte exposure to the inflamed endothelium by decreasing jerkiness and (b) promoting leukocyte activation by outside-in signaling. These observations help to resolve the apparent discrepancy between the minor contribution of L-selectin to rolling and the significant leukocyte recruitment defect in L-selectin knockout mice.

As a resuit of explorations of injecting barium chloride with the concentrations Cr - 2000 mg/l to the sewage water, an effect of refinement 99, 84 % was obtained.

The present study aimed to evaluate if it’s possible to reduce the costs for the anti-infective medicine in a ward for the infectious disease. Analytic accounts data, related to the cost for three kind of drugs (antibiotic, antimicrobic and antriretroviral) will be presented. The analytic account is referred to the Bologna USL Firm (Presidi ospedalieri Bellaria and Maggiore) and to the Hospital Unit for the infectious disease (Ospedale Maggiore) in the year 1999. The Hospital Unit for the infectious disease consists of two ward for day of stay (32 beds), one day hospital for 10 beds and one divisional outpatients’ clinic. In 1999 there were 650 hospitalized (and discharged) patients and 783 day hospital patients. The overall cost for the Bologna USL Firm was L. 11.068.023.000, accounting L. 7.253.846.000 (65.5%) for the antiretroviral drug, L. 1.958.115.000 (17%) for the antibiotic drug and L. 1.856.062.000 (16.8%) for the antimicrobic drug and other antinfective medicine. The expenditure for the Hospital Unit for the infectious disease was L. 7.543.851.000, accounting L. 7.008.163.000 (92.9%) for the antiretroviral drug, L. 256.167.000 (3.4%) for the antibiotic drug and L. 279.521.000 (3.7%) for the antimicrobic drug and other antinfective medicine.

Using a data set of insurers operated in the U.S. property and liability (P-L) insurance market during the sample period, this study examines the interactions between firm growth and profitability. Dynamic panel regressions are conducted to investigate its relationship and other factors in the growth and profit equations. Regression models include firm specific variables and industry cycle variables to control and deliver a better estimation. The results of this study show that past profits have a major impact on future profits, thereby supporting that profits continue to be generated in the P-L insurance sector. The findings are consistent with two additional profit measures. Additionally, this research finds that lagged growth is benefitting present profit, specifically assessed by ROE. The growth model shows a positive association between lagged profit and current growth. This study further demonstrates how quickly smaller-sized businesses expand in this market. Other firm characteristics are identified in the profit and growth models as well.

Cultivars of fresh market peaches (Prunus persica, L. Batsch) vary in the duration for maximum yields in the shipping stage (firm ripe) from once-over harvests. A cultivar having many firm ripe fruit with few green and over ripe at a given time has a narrow maturity range. It can be picked fewer times, facilitate mechanical once-over harvests and reduce spray costs. Fruit were harvested from small trees or scaffold branches of large trees at 2- to 3-day intervals as once-over harvests on 4 dates to estimate maturity range and duration of the maximum firm ripe fruit. Fruit of 3 cultivars were graded by color into maturity stages: 1) green, 2) firm ripe, and 3) over ripe. `Loring' had 82% firm ripe sorted in the 1st 3 harvests in 1987 and 1988. `Redskin' had 83% firm ripe in the 2nd and 3rd harvests in 1987. `Redglobe' had 85% marketable in the 2nd and dropped to 75% in the 3rd harvest in 1987. `Redhaven' had about 80% firm ripe in the 1st 3 harvests in 1988. Results indicate that the duration of narrow maturity ranges of `Loring' and `Redhaven' would permit them to be harvested over about 5 days with high yieids in the firm-ripe stage.

Learning outcomes The case explores information technology (IT) company Mindtree’s journey of 20 years from the time it was founded in 1999 to be different from others, and how it became a target for acquisition by an Indian diversified conglomerate in 2019. It offers insights into developing organizational culture and values in an organization, threats faced by a company when promoters dilute their shareholding, and the strategies followed by the acquirer and the target firm. It also deals with the challenges in the acquisition of a knowledge service digital firm. After working through the case and assignment questions, students will be able to: identify the circumstances under which a company can become a target for hostile takeover; describe motivations of the acquirer firm in an acquisition; distinguish between acquisition and hostile takeover, and discuss salient features of Securities and Exchange Board of India (substantial acquisition of shares and takeover) regulations, 2011; list the defenses a target firm can adopt to ward off hostile acquirer; explore strategies followed by acquirer and target firms; analyze important ingredients of organization culture, and importance of cultural congruence in an acquisition; and discuss challenges faced by an acquirer in India, namely, legal, retention of clients and key people in the target firm particularly in hostile environment. Case overview/synopsis The case explores how ten IT professionals founded mid-tier IT services company Mindtree in 1999 in Bengaluru, India (home to Infosys and Wipro) to be different from others – by inserting themselves at a higher level in the value chain, being philanthropic as a part of broader business strategy to attract a certain kind of employee and customer. It developed a culture of equality, consideration and respect. Its attrition rate of 12 to 13 per cent was significantly lower than the Industries. Mindtree crossed annual revenue of US$1bn for FY 2019 and was growing at twice the industry’s growth rate. The most attractive part was that its proportion of revenue from digital services was about 50 per cent as compared to 25-35 per cent of other services vendors. With time, the share of promoters/founders declined and increased one investor’s shareholding of V. G. Siddhartha and his related entities. In early March 2019, the promoters’ stake was 13.32 per cent while Siddhartha had 20.32 per cent. Larsen and Toubro (L&T) one of India’s conglomerate entered into a share purchase agreement on March 18, 2019 with Siddhartha to acquire his 20.32 per cent stake. Immediately, L&T asked its broker to purchase up to 15 per cent of share capital of Mindtree at a price not exceeding INR 980 per share (each share of face value INR 10). This would trigger an open offer by L&T to purchase additional 31 per cent shares of Mindtree. The action of hostile takeover bid by L&T evoked emotional criticism from Mindtree founders. Mindtree efforts to defend itself could not materialize. L&T’s stake crossed 26 per cent on May 16, 2019. After Indian regulator SEBI’s approval, L&T’s open offer to buy shares from Mindtree shareholders commenced on June 17, 2019. The case examines motivation of the acquirer firm particularly when it is a conglomerate, and how a well-performing company became a target for hostile takeover. It looks at vulnerabilities of a target firm, and defensive steps a firm can take to fence itself against such takeover. The case also explores how organizational culture is built in a people-oriented business, namely, digital services, and what role it plays in a merger of two firms. The activity-based costing (ABC) in service companies is considered for minimization companies expenses modeling the uncertainty of service demand in the statistical probabilistic way. The two-stage stochastic programming model is formulated and implemented obtaining the deterministic model as a particular case of the stochastic one. The model takes into account the relation among activities better as compared with other known ones, namely, coherently with the ABC system. The model involves a stochastic demand and a relative minimum level to be satisfied. A modified L-shaped algorithm is developed in order to solve this stochastic optimization model. The applications of the model developed to the hospital service and the Crown prosecution service are considered, too.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyze product diversification, business structure and insurer performance with a comprehensive look at the property-liability (P/L) insurance operations. Design/methodology/approach Using a panel data, this study employs an ordinary least squares regression model, fixed effects model and random effects model to examine the impact of product diversification and business structure on the performance of P/L insurers. The study assesses insurer performance using both risk-adjusted return on assets and risk-adjusted return on equity. Findings The study finds that product diversification is significantly negatively related to the performance of P/L insurers. The results are consistent with the diversification discount theory. The empirical results reveal that business lines have significant impacts on firm performance, particularly on the lines of fire and marine insurances. Furthermore, the interaction between product diversification and firm size implies that product diversification significantly increases the performance of large-sized insurance firms. Originality/value The study provides some valuable insights into the effects of diversification and business structure on the performance of P/L insurers in a developing country. The study’s findings suggest that management of P/L insurers should clarify their objectives and carefully assess the company’s resources when dealing with product diversification and business structure. The results have practical implications for the financial services industry in Taiwan.

'Vigred' is a new Slovenian sweet cherry variety, an offspring between ‘Germersdorfer’ x ‘Burlat’ crossed by Smole in 1970, introduced in 1986. Ripening occurs about one week after cv. ‘Burlat’. The tree is medium vigorous, wide spreading. Blooming in midseason. Flowers and leaves are large. The fruit is large (average weight 8.5 g), blunt shape, the skin is glossy red to brown red, very attractive and medium susceptible to cracking. Flesh is red, firm, sweet, high quality. Pedicel is medium.

Variability in maturity within a peach (Prunus persica, L. Batsch) fruit was estimated by measurements of force and the soluble solids concentration (SSC) at 16 coordinates around the peach at five maturity stages: 1) about one-half final swell (immature); 2) 85% final swell (green); 3) firm-ripe and similar to chip #3 of the Clemson Univ. system; 4) firm-ripe and similar to chip #5; and 5) tree-ripe. Firm-ripe 3 and 4 stages were firm enough to ship, but the tree-ripe stage was too soft. Firmness measured with a 4.7-mm-diameter penetrometer tip from two cultivars indicates a strong trend for the peach tip and cheeks to be firmer than tissue at other coordinates. Coordinates at the equator and around the stem end are generally firmer than coordinates at lat. 45°N, particularly in stages 3, 4, and 5. The SSC in juice from a cylinder of fruit adjacent to the puncture was higher at long. 90°E-W than at the sutures and higher at lat. 0° than at 70°S. Variance increased for force and decreased for SSC between maturity stages to the firm-ripe stage. The coordinate technique might be used to characterize and select cultivars that would be most suitable for once-over harvests.

For the first time utilization of intravenously administered l-alanyl-l-glutamine and glycyl-l-tyrosine was investigated by means of their kinetic behaviour after bolus injection in 10 and 11 apparently healthy male subjects (age 26.6 ± 5.7 years), respectively. 2. The injection of the synthetic dipeptides was not accompanied by any side effects or complaints. 3. The synthetic dipeptides l-alanyl-l-glutamine and glycyl-l-tyrosine were rapidly cleared from plasma. By applying a monoexponential model the elimination half-lives were found to have very similar values (3.8 ± 0.5 and 3.4 ± 0.3 min) whether alanine or glycine was occupying the N-terminal position. The estimated volume of distribution was approximately that of the extracellular space. 4. Peptide disappearance was accompanied by a prompt equimolar increase in the concentrations of the constituent amino acids alanine and glutamine as well as glycine and tyrosine. 5. The study provides firm evidence that l-alanyl-l-glutamine and glycyl-l-tyrosine are rapidly (quantitatively) hydrolysed. The results of this study may indicate a safe and efficient parenteral use of the investigated peptides as sources of free glutamine and free tyrosine.

The number of firms involved in the production of barrels from white oak (quercus petraea L,) is small. The production of wood barrels is quite complex and with a low exploitation coefficient. We think it is in the interests of firms to know how much the coefficient of use of sawn material for these types of products is. For the study we have chosen the firm "Beha-N" in Rahovec, which mainly deals with the production of oak wood barrels. The sawn material taken in the study was of a good quality. To do the tests we used weighing methods, as its volume was difficult to measure since it was half milled. Tests were conducted for the production of barrel details with a volume of 50, 30 and 20 litters, which are most widely used by the costumers. For the realization used by the firm were taken into account the dimensions and technology. From the measurement data it turned out that the weight of the sawn timber was about 250kg. The results of these weights were exchanged in volume and percentage and they are shown in final results.

Drawing on the upper echelon’s theory and the resource-based theory, the purpose of the study is to examine the impact of board diversity on the Chinese A-listed firm’s performance. The data were collected from A-listed companies registered in Shanghai SSE 180 and the Shenzhen 100 from the period 2007 to 2016. Since some of the companies got listed after 2007, our data is unbalanced. Both fixed effects model and a more robust dynamic panel generalised method of moment estimation are applied to cater the endogeneity problem. After controlling for several firms and board characteristics, we found gender diversity, education diversity and foreign national diversity measured through Blau index have a positive and significant effect on the Chinese A-listed firm performance for both the accounting and market measures. The age diversity and independence diversity seem not to be an essential determinant of firm performance in Chinese A-listed firms. The results supported the efficient monitoring hypothesis and managerial networking theory, which suggests that the director’s diversity reduces the managerial entrenchment on the one hand, while, through networking, increases the resources of the firms on the other side.

Prior studies argue that social capital is vital for firm growth. Adding to this line of research, this paper provides more evidence regarding the contribution of bonding and bridging social ties to various aspects of small-l and medium-sized enterprise (SME) development. Building on the original data from Russia, this paper investigates the effects of firm-internal and firm-external relational ties on SME performance and geographic expansion. The findings indicate that horizontal bridging ties facilitate specific strategies of SME growth. Thus, this paper supports prior research conducted in the Asian context, and allows for extending the outcomes of bonding and bridging social capital into broader institutional settings. In addition, this study raises the question of relationship between the composition of social capital and distinct organizational characteristics of SMEs. Finally, the paper discusses the implications for future research, and outlines some practical recommendations for SMEs operating in emerging markets.

Penelitian ini menggunakan data perusahaan non-keuangan yang terdaftar di Bursa Efek Indonesia (BEI) dari tahun 2019–2021 dengan jumlah sampel 1048 firm years. Analisis data menggunakan regresi linier berganda. Pengukuran CSR menggunakan content analysis, sedangkan nilai perusahaan (Firm Value) diukur menggunakan Return Saham. GCG diukur dengan menggunakan Board Size (BS), Board Independence (B-IND), Family Ownership (FMO), dan Largest Ownership (L-OWN). Proksi Financial Performance menggunakan Return on Assets (ROA) dan Net Profit Margin (NPM). Hasil empiris menunjukkan bahwa CSR berpengaruh positif terhadap FV. Financial Performance (ROA) melemahkan hubungan CSR dengan FV. Namun, GCG tidak mampu memoderasi hubungan antara CSR dan FV. Penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa aktivitas CSR penting untuk dilakukan untuk meningkatkan FV dan business sustainability di masyarakat.

Conservatism in the CAPM and L-CAPM standards often emphasizes systematic risk to explain the phenomenon of the risk-return relationship and ignores idiosyncratic risk with the assumption that the risk can be diversified. The effect of the Covid-19 outbreak raises the question of whether the idiosyncratic risk can still be ignored considering that the risk has a close relationship to firm-specific risk. This study sets a portfolio consisting of 177 active public firms in the Indonesia Stock Exchange before and after the Covid-19 pandemic. On portfolio set, idiosyncratic risk is estimated by the standard CAPM and L-CAPM in the observation range from January 2, 2019, to June 30, 2021. The results of the analysis show that L-CAPM and CAPM produce significantly different idiosyncratic risks. Empirical evidence shows that the highest firm-specific risk is in the third period and has a stable condition since the fourth period. This condition is confirmed by regression results that idiosyncratic risk together with systematic risk positively affects stock returns in the fourth period as suggested by the efficient market hypothesis. Uniquely, both systematic risk and idiosyncratic risk based on L-CAPM do not show a significant effect on stock returns in the fifth period, so it is a strong indication that liquidity is an important factor that must be considered in making investments.

A key concept in the pharmaceutical industry is open innovation, in which pharmaceutical companies contribute to human health and adapt to a changing business environment by acquiring external knowledge. As successful drug discoveries and developments have become challenging, pharmaceutical companies must proactively pursue the open innovation of new drugs through various inter-firm partnerships to be more sustainable. This study aims to interpret the trend of inter-firm partnerships in the development of cancer drugs and to evaluate their effectiveness by examining inter-firm transactions related to cancer drugs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is a novel approach to exercise this on each product instead of at the company level. The findings revealed that the number of inter-firm transactions in the oncology field has increased over the past 20 years. Furthermore, the annual number of transactions related to biologics has surpassed that of small molecules since 2015 and has been primarily driven by three PD-(L)1 inhibitors: Keytruda, Opdivo, and Tecentriq. Moreover, the average number of inter-firm transactions related to biologics is significantly higher than that of small molecules in total, in alliances, and in financing, suggesting that inter-firm transactions for biologic cancer drugs actively occur through various means. Additionally, a positive and significant correlation exists between the number of transactions and the average number of approved indications for biologics, but not for small molecules. These results suggest that the observed trend of active inter-firm transactions is key in increasing the probability of success in cancer drug research and development. This could provide a potential breakthrough in this industry for the successful development of innovative drug candidates to address unmet medical needs. Further study is necessary to confirm the applicability of this paradigm in broader drug discoveries and development.

The lionfish is considered an invasive species in the coasts of Yucatan and the Mexican Caribbean; therefore, it is important to develop elements that facilitate its exploitation and hunting, and promote its consumption and economic development. The objective of this study was to evaluate the sensory attributes through a descriptive analysis of a non-perishable product packaged in jars of glass, which was made from lionfish fillet. The attributes for flavor were: sweet, fish/sardine, tomato, spices, oil, for odor: fish, fish/sardine, spices, for color: beige, brown, red, and for texture: fibrous, dry, juicy, soft, firm and grainy. Similarities were found with a confidence level above 95% in the attributes of odor (fish), color (brown), flavor (sweet, fish/sardine, oil) and texture (fibrous, dry, juicy, soft, firm, granular) between the lionfish product and the commercial or reference product. The main contribution of this project is to generate an alternative for the use and sensory acceptance by consumers of a product made from this invasive species that has a great environmental impact in the region.

Tomato fruit firmness is a key quality component of tomatoes produced for processing applications. Fruit firmness is generally considered a quantitatively inherited trait. Pericarp firmness of modern tomato cultivars is believed to be derived from a fairly narrow genetic background and is the result of the cumulative effort of numerous breeders over many years. Despite inferior phenotypes, wild species contain loci that can substantially increase tomato fruit quality. In the current study, inheritance of fruit firmness in firm and ultra-firm processing tomato germplasm developed from transgressive segregants of interspecific Lycopersicon esculentum × L. hirsutum and intraspecific L. esculentum crosses was characterized. Large-fruited breeding lines that varied in fruit firmness from soft to firm were identified for genetic analyses. A six-parent diallel of these advanced breeding lines was developed for field trials over multiple locations. Fruit firmness in the resulting 36 lines was determined by measuring fruit elastic properties during fruit puncture and compression. Following loading for compression, stress relaxation was recorded for 15 s. A three-parameter model was used to fit the relaxation curves. There was little correlation between firmness (maximum force) and the three relaxation parameters, i.e., firmness measured the elastic component and the relaxation parameters measured the viscous portions of the texture. General and specific combining ability for firmness derived from the respective genetic backgrounds was determined. Genetic variance components for fruit firmness were estimated using a diallel analysis and narrow sense heritability was measured using parent-offspring regression.

AbstractThe relationships between reflectance values measured with an EEL reflectometer, and C1ELAB L* a* b* coordinates measured with a tristimulus meter, were determined using 572 samples of pork m. longissimus dorsi. These samples covered the muscle colour/condition range from extreme pale, soft, exudative (PSE) to extreme dark, firm, dry (DFD). There was a good (r = 0·91) and slightly curvilinear relationship between L* value and reflectance, the other relationships being significantly poorer. Based on these findings, pork loins with L* values between 49 and 60 would on average have consistently good visual appeal using criteria in the Meat and Livestock Commission blueprint for quality pork.

Lymphocytes from the blood home to secondary lymphoid tissues through a process of tethering, rolling, firm adhesion and transmigration. Tethering and rolling of lymphocytes is mediated by the interaction of L-selectin on lymphocytes with sulphated ligands expressed by the specialized endothelial cells of high endothelial venules (HEVs). The sulphate-dependent monoclonal antibody MECA79 stains HEVs in peripheral lymph nodes and recognizes the complex of HEV ligands for L-selectin termed peripheral node addressin. High endothelial cell GlcNAc-6-sulphotransferase/L-selectin ligand sulphotransferase is a HEV-expressed sulphotransferase that contributes to the formation of the MECA79 epitope and L-selectin ligands on lymph node HEVs. MECA79-reactive vessels are also common at sites of chronic inflammation, suggesting mechanistic parallels between lymphocyte homing and inflammatory trafficking.

Abstract‘Braeburn’ apples from three harvests after 6-month storage in controlled atmosphere were measured at 670 nm by time-resolved reflectance spectroscopy (TRS), ranked on decreasing μa670 (increasing maturity), classified as less (LeM), medium and more mature (MoM), randomised into three batches per harvest and analysed after 1, 8 and 14 days of shelf life. LeM and MoM apples were measured in the 630-900 nm range by TRS, and analysed for sensory profile (firm, crispy, juicy, mealy) and pulp mechanical characteristics (firmness, stiffness, energy-to-rupture). All data were processed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). According to sensory intensity scores, fruits were either divided into five classes (very low – VL; low – L; medium – M; high – H; very high – VH) separately for every attribute, or clustered into four groups, each one representing a specific sensory profile. The absorption spectra showed a maximum at 670 nm (chlorophyll-a) and μa670 was higher in the VH class for firm, crispy and juicy and in the VL and L classes for mealy. The scattering spectra had a decreasing trend with the wavelength increase, and μs’ values were lower in the VH class for firm and crispy, and higher in the VH class for mealy and in the VL ones for juicy. PCA underlined that μs’ values were negatively related to firmness and μa670, and that μa690, μa730, μa830, μa850 and μa900 were opposed to mealiness. PC scores differed among the four sensory profiles and increased from VL to VH classes for firmness, crispiness and juiciness and from VH to VL classes for mealiness.

Abstract Leumedins are small molecules that inhibit neutrophil movement into inflamed tissues. These compounds have been shown to inhibit the adherence of neutrophils in static adhesion assays mediated by beta2-integrins. We now report that leumedins, like activating agents, induce the loss of L-selectin from the neutrophil surface. The loss of L-selectin is unrelated to the inhibition of static adhesion, since neutrophils that have been pretreated with leumedins to cause shedding of L-selectin, followed by removal of drug, adhere normally in a static adhesion assay, and this adhesion is inhibited upon readdition of leumedin. In an assay of adhesion to endothelial cells under conditions of physiologic wall shear stress, leumedins prevent both primary capture of neutrophils mediated by L-selectin and firm adherence mediated by beta2-integrins.

In recent years, studies have been carried on the selection and breeding of melon to reduce its production cost. The F1 seeds of this species are usually created by parental lines. Notably, the parental lines are separated from each other to secure the breeding materials. However, there are no studies on establishing suitable conditions for storing pollen grains of Japanese melon Cucumis melo L. In this study, pollen grains of C. melo were dried at 38 oC temperature, for 1.5 hours, which served as the raw materials. After storage in acetone at 5 oC for 3, 5, 7 days, or in liquid nitrogen for 5 days, pollen grains were stained with triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) to evaluate their viability and pollination ability. Then, the following parameters including pollen grains’ survival rate, morphology analysis of pollen grains, pollen grains’ fruiting rate, fruit weight, firm seed rate, and germination of melon seeds were analyzed. The study results show that the grains’ survival rates were 86.58%, 88.38%, 87.28% or 88.58% in the group stored in acetone for 3, 5, 7 days or liquid nitrogen for 5 days, respectively. The fertilized fruit rate was 100% in the group stored in liquid nitrogen for 5 days. But the rate of germination from firm seeds was highest, with 94.00% in the group stored in acetone for 3 days. The best method is storing the pollen grains in acetone for 3 days.

Abstract Background: The cause and continuation of vaso-occlusion in sickle cell disease (SCD) are fueled by the sickle-Red Blood Cells interactions with multiple other cell populations, promoting inflammation, obstructing the vasculature, and injuring the endothelium, leading to broad manifestations that affect most vital organs. Recent studies have identified multiple cellular components and molecular factors that contribute to the pathophysiology of SCD as reviewed by Zhang et al 2016 in Blood. It is likely that a multi-targeted approach for addressing SCD vaso-occlusion will be required to achieve the best clinical outcome. Sevuparin (DF02), a novel drug in Phase 2 for acute treatment of vaso-occlusive crisis in SCD (NCT02515838), is a polysaccharide blocking abnormal adhesion and thereby normalizing obstructed blood flow. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown potent anti-adhesive effects with a multimodal mechanism of action. In this study, we evaluate the effects of sevuparin on the adhesion of sickle whole blood from individual patients to endothelial cells (HUVECs) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) (Flow Firm Adhesion) and sickle-leukocyte rolling adhesion on L-selectin (Flow Dynamic Adhesion) using a standardized microfluidic flow-based adhesion assay. Methods: Blood was obtained from homozygous SCD patients (n = 12, age range 15-25yrs) in sodium citrate after obtaining informed consent. A comprehensive assessment of the effect of sevuparin on whole blood adhesive properties during simulated blood flow was assessed using standardized Flow Firm Adhesion and Flow Dynamic Adhesion assays (Functional Fluidics, Detroit MI). Flow Firm Adhesion: Whole blood firm adhesion was measured during physiologic flow in microfluidic channels (Fluxion-Bioflux 1000, San Francisco, CA) coated with either VCAM-1 or cultured HUVECs. HUVECs were activated by TNF-alpha (25ng/mL x 24 hrs.) and Histamine (100mM x 10min) prior to the assay. Whole blood was treated with increasing doses of sevuparin (0, 3, 7, 21, 200µg/mL) for 30 min. Dose response of whole blood adhesion index (cells/mm2) to sevuparin was measured. Flow Dynamic Adhesion: Rolling adhesion of isolated sickle-leukocytes on an L-selectin coated microfluidic channel was measured during physiologic flow. Isolated sickle-leukocytes were treated with increasing doses of sevuparin (0, 3, 7, 21, 200µg/mL) for 30 min. Dose response of rolling cell density (cells/mm2), rolling cell percentage (%), and average rolling velocity (µm/s) to sevuparin was assessed. Cell identification and tracking of rolling were digitally analyzed. Results:Statistically significant inhibition of sickle whole blood adhesion to HUVECs was observed at 3.0 µg/mL of sevuparin (p<0.001). In the same manner, statistically significant inhibition of sickle whole blood adhesion to VCAM-1 was observed at 200 µg/mL of sevuparin (p=0.033, absolute adhesion, p=0.001, % baseline adhesion). Each patient sample demonstrated a reduction in adhesion. Sevuparin also demonstrated a statistically significant dose-dependent reduction of sickle leukocyte rolling cell density (cells/mm2), rolling cell percentage (%), and an increase in average rolling velocity (µm/s) on L-selectin. Patient-to-patient variability in sevuparin response was observed. Conclusions: Sevuparin blocks both sickle whole blood and isolated sickle-leukocyte adhesive interactions under physiologic flow at clinically relevant concentrations. The blocking of adhesion to VCAM-1 indicates that sevuparin acts in the same manner as other heparinoids in vitro, and block the interaction with VLA-4. L-selectin is another possible target for sevuparin therapy now confirmed at the cellular level. Clinically, Okpala et al 2002 has shown that L-selectin expression by monocytes is increased in vaso-occlusive crises, compared to steady state and that both mononuclear cell and neutrophil L-selectin expression is also higher in patients with certain complications of SCD. Here we show that sevuparin acts in a multicellular manner, blocking both SS-RBC firm adhesion and L-selectin-mediated rolling adhesion of sickle-leukocytes, as well as functionally interacting with yet another key adhesion receptor VCAM-1. This further adds to sevuparin's multimodal action and its potential clinical benefits in treating the complex mechanisms manifested in vaso-occlusion and complications in SCD. Naive T cells are selectively recruited from the blood into peripheral lymph nodes during lymphocyte recirculation. L-selectin, a lectin-like receptor, mediates the initial attachment of lymphocytes to high endothelial venules (HEV) in lymph nodes. A subsequent step involving the activation of beta 2 integrins has been proposed to facilitate firm adhesion, but the activating signals are poorly understood. We report here that either antibody-mediated cross-linking of L-selectin on human lymphocytes or treatment of the cells with GlyCAM-1, an HEV-derived, secreted ligand for L-selectin, stimulates their binding to ICAM-1 through the beta 2 integrin pathway. Furthermore, GlyCAM-1 causes the rapid expression of a neoepitope on beta 2 integrins associated with a high-avidity state. Naive (CD45RA+), but not memory (CD45R0+) lymphocytes, respond to L-selectin cross-linking or GlyCAM-1 treatment. Thus, the complexing of L-selectin by specific ligands may provide key signals to naive lymphocytes, contributing to their selective recruitment into peripheral lymphoid organs.

Today, enterprises might implement different supply chain strategies for different products in order to survive and to increase their market shares. The use of alternative supply chain strategies requires different decoupling points. But positioning this point for leagile strategies is not as easy as in lean and agile supply chains. The purpose of this study is to calculate the weights of criteria effective in determining the position of a decoupling point for the leagile strategy of a furniture components manufacturing firm. For that purpose a two-stage decision making method was used. In the first stage, Fuzzy Dematel method was used to determine the interactions and causal relationships between criteria and to identify the causal diagram. In the second stage, weights of criteria were calculated by Dematel based Analytic Network Process method. In this study was aimed to investigate spread and pathological findings of Linguatula serrata nymphs in mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) in sheep. A total of 1000 MLNs from 140 sheep (125 male and 15 female) were collected from a commercial (Konet) abattoir. Fourteen of 140 sheep (10%) were infested with nymph stages of L. serrata.Infested lymph nodes were swollen, firm, edematous, many yellowish-white pinpoint and with congestion. In histopathological examinations, these nodules were consist of one or more nymphal stages of L. serrata and these were surrounded by infiltration mononuclear cells and neutrophyl leucocyte. Lymphoid follicules were hyperplastic and sinus catarrh was also observed in medulla.

Almost all economic theories presuppose a production function, either on the firm level or the aggregate level. In this sense the production function is one of the key concepts of mainstream neoclassical theories. There is a very important class of production functions that are often analyzed in both microeconomics and macroeonomics; namely, $h$-homogeneous production functions. This class of production functions includes two important production functions; namely, the generalized Cobb-Douglas production functions and ACMS production functions. It was proved in 2010 by L. Losonczi \cite{L} that twice differentiable two-inputs $h$-homogeneous production functions with constant elasticity of substitution (CES) property are Cobb-Douglas' and ACMS production functions. Lozonczi also pointed out in \cite{L} that his proof does not work for production functions of $n$-inputs with $n>2$

Marrubium vulgare is a plant with high bioactive potential. It contains marrubiin, a labdane diterpene that is characteristic for this genus, as well as a complex mixture of phenolic compounds. According to numerous studies, M. vulgare acts as a good antioxidant agent, and due to this, it could potentially be useful in treatments of cancer, diabetes mellitus, and liver diseases. In addition, its anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, antihypertensive, hypolipidemic, and sedative potential are discussed. Apart from that, its antimicrobial activity, especially against Gram+ bacteria, fungi, herpes simplex virus, and parasites such as Toxoplasma gondii, Trichomonas vaginalis, and Plasmodium berghei-berghei was recorded. Additionally, it could be used as a chicken lice repellent, herbicide, and natural insecticide against mosquito larvae and natural molluscicide. In veterinary medicine, M. vulgare can be used as an anthelmintic against the eggs and larvae of bovine strongyles parasites, and as an antibiotic against bovine mastitis caused by resistant bacterial strains. Due to the mentioned benefits, there is a tendency for the cultivation of M. vulgare in order to ensure high-quality raw material, but more firm scientific evidence and well-designed clinical trials are necessary for the well-established use of M. vulgare herb and its preparations.

ABSTRACT Leukocyte recruitment in the liver includes a two-step procedure in which selectin-dependent leukocyte rolling is a prerequisite for subsequent CD18-dependent leukocyte firm adhesion in postsinusoidal venules. However, the roles of the individual selectins in leukocyte rolling and adhesion, hepatocellular injury, and apoptosis remain elusive. Therefore, we examined the pathophysiological role of P-, E-, and L-selectin in male C57BL/6 mice challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and d-galactosamine (Gal) by use of intravital microscopy of the liver microcirculation. In control animals, administration of LPS-Gal provoked reproducible hepatic damage, including marked increases of leukocyte recruitment, liver enzymes, and hepatocyte apoptosis and reduced sinusoidal perfusion. Interestingly, pretreatment with an anti-P-selectin antibody (RB40.34) markedly reduced leukocyte rolling and firm adhesion by 65 and 71%, respectively. Moreover, interference with P-selectin function significantly improved sinusoidal perfusion and reduced the increase in liver enzymes by 49 to 84% in endotoxemic mice. Moreover, the activity of caspase-3 and the number of apoptotic hepatocytes were significantly reduced by 55 and 54%, respectively, in RB40.34-treated animals. In contrast, administration of an anti-E-selectin antibody (10E9.6) and an anti-L-selectin antibody (Mel-14) did not protect against endotoxin-induced leukocyte responses or hepatic injury. In conclusion, our novel findings document a principal role of P-selectin in mediating leukocyte rolling, a precondition to the subsequent firm adhesion of leukocytes in liver injury. Furthermore, our novel data demonstrate that inhibition of P-selectin function reduces hepatocellular injury and apoptosis, suggesting a causal relationship between leukocyte recruitment on one hand and hepatocellular injury and apoptosis on the other hand. Based on these findings, it is suggested that P-selectin may be an important therapeutic target in endotoxin-induced liver injury.

AbstractIn previous studies, the influence of plantar sensation has been examined using various textured surfaces with different stiffness materials to assess static balance. This study investigated the effects of a Firm Textured Surface (FTS) along with age and sex-related influences on postural control under different visual conditions. Forty subjects (20 elderly, 10 males, mean age 68.30, 10 females, mean age 68.00, and 20 young people, 10 males, mean age 25.45, 10 females, mean age 27.30) participated in this study maintained a quiet standing on FTS, foam and firm surfaces with eyes open and closed. The center of pressure displacement (CoPDISP), CoP velocity (CoPVEL), and sway velocity of the CoP in anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) direction (VA/P and VM/L) were measured. FTS was associated with lower postural sway measures in both the groups with eyes open and closed. However, the foam surface showed the worst results in all postural parameters under all experimental conditions. Separate four-way ANOVAs were applied to each dependent variable. The main effects of surface (p < 0.0001), vision (p < 0.0001) and age (p < 0.0001 for CoPDISP, CoPVEL and VA/P; p = 0.0003 for VM/L) were significant in each of the four fitted models. Sex was never significant, either as a main effect or an interaction with other experimental factors. Eyes open were able to reduce the negative effects of the foam surfaces but without vision the proprioceptive sensory system cues of the body state become more important for maintaining balance. A good stimulation with rigid texture should be considered as relief to reduce the physiological-related decline of afferent information with age.

This paper deals with the influence of Mg, N and the content of chlorophylls and carotenoids on photosynthetic productivity of two new genotypes of winter wheat, Lara and Perla, at two localities, Donji Miholjac and Kutjevo, during the vegetation periods 1997/1998 and 1998/1999. The applied parameters were determined by standard methods. The results showed effects of Mg concentration on all examined parameters with the exception of chlorophyll b content. The highest correlation coefficient was with the N concentration, significant correlation between the leaf area and N concentrations and between the leaf area and chlorophyll a. Statistical analysis showed very significant relationship between the content of organic matter and examined parameters with a large number of significant correlations. The most important correlation was found between the content of organic matter and N concentration, and between chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoids and the content of organic matter. The link between N, Mg and other examined parameters was firm and significant as well as under strong influence of external factors.

Measurement of the productivity of firms is an important research issue in productivity literature. Over the years, various methods have been developed to measure firm productivity across the globe. But there is no unanimity on the use of methods, and research on the identification of factors which determine productivity has been neglected. In view of these gaps, this study aims to measure total factor productivity (TFP) and tries to identify firm-specific factors which determine productivity of Indian manufacturing companies. The study is based on data of 616 firms from 1998–99 to 2012–13. To measure TFP, the Levinsohn–Petrin (L-P) method has been employed, and the fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) method has been used to identify factors that affect TFP. The results reveal that embodied and disembodied technology plays a crucial role in the determination of productivity overall in manufacturing and other sub-industries. Similarly, the size of firms and intensity of raw material imports are also important for the determination of productivity across the sub-industries. JEL Classification: C14, C33, D24, L60
