The thesis provides a case study for how settler colonialism intertwined with ethnonationalism to shape social identification in the Israeli town of Kiryat Shemona. Jews from Arab and Muslim lands were categorized by Zionist nation-builders as Mizrahim and disproportionally placed on the geographic and socio-economic margins of Israeli society to Judaise territory, to prevent the return of the displaced indigenous Palestinian population and to provide cheap labour for Ashkenazi settlements. They were excluded from the Ashkenazi-dominated centre of power, yet included as essential members of a militaristic frontier ethos. The thesis explores how Mizrahim negotiated Israeliness from the margins within the dynamics of ethnocratic exclusion and inclusion, in what I have termed peripheral nationhood. It examines the Israeli State’s attempt to mould loyal subjects through Hebrew education, national ceremonies and military campaigns. In everyday life, Mizrahim contested the socio-economic and cultural hegemony of the Ashkenazi through ethnic and transnational identifications and practices. Simultaneously, their support for the nation-in-arms and creative self-fashioning as ‘strong’ and ‘civilized’ reinforced the dominant logic of ethno-nationalism. Mizrahi residents redeployed stereotypes and an Oriental stigma in their descriptions of Mizrahim, Russian-speaking Israelis and Arabs to elevate their own social status and position in the ethnocracy. The nation was only intermittently salient as a category of belonging, thus challenging theories of ‘everyday nationalism’ that consider it omnipresent. During the Israeli war on Gaza in 2008/2009, sentiments of national unity were heightened, and the border Mizrahim appeared to be move and/or moved themselves from the periphery to the centre of the nation as key actors in the moral legitimization of war. The dissertation argues that the qualities that make up peripheral nationhood are coeval with construction of national unity as a colonial practice by the centre.

Tutkielman päämääränä on lisätä ymmärrystä kirjastolain ilmentämästä kirjaston roolista yhteiskunnassa. Tavoitteena on tarkastella diskurssianalyysin avulla sitä, millaisia kirjastokäsityksiä vuoden 2017 alussa voimaan tulleeseen kirjastolakiin sisältyy. Aineistona käytän hallituksen esitystä uudeksi kirjastolaiksi, siitä annettua sivistysvaliokunnan mietintöä, kirjastolaista eduskunnassa käytyä lähetekeskustelua sekä yhteenvetoa asiantuntijalausunnoista, jotka annettiin hallituksen esitysluonnoksesta uudeksi kirjastolaiksi. Tutkielmassa määritän kolme kirjastokäsitystä, jotka perustuvat kirjaston yhteiskunnallista roolia käsittelevään kirjallisuuteen. Nämä ovat traditionaalinen kirjasto, tietoyhteiskunnan kirjasto ja sosiaalinen kirjasto. Näistä käsityksistä uusi kirjastolaki ilmentää pääosin käsitystä kirjastosta sosiaalisena kirjastona. Uuden kirjastolain mukainen sosiaalinen kirjasto on luonteeltaan osallistava. Kirjaston yhteiskunnallinen rooli sisältää yhteisön tiedollisen sekä kulttuurisen hoivan ja uusintamisen lisäksi sosiaalisen hoivan ja uusintamisen ulottuvuudet. Kirjaston keskeiseksi tehtäväksi määrittyy mahdollistaa yksilöille toimiminen uusliberalistisina yrittäjäkansalaisina. Kirjaston legitimiteetti pohjautuu toisaalta perustuslakiin ja toisaalta uusliberalistisen rationaliteetin mukaisiin näkökulmiin kirjaston tuottamista hyödyistä yksilöille ja yhteiskunnalle. Kirjasto voi roolissaan toimia sekä uusliberalistisen rationaliteetin mukaista toimintaa tukevana hallinnan välineenä että emansipatorisena ja avata mahdollisuuksia uusliberalistisen hallinnan haastamiseen. Jatkotutkimuksessa voisi tarkastella kirjastokäsitysten välisiä suhteita ja jännitteitä sekä perehtyä yksityiskohtaisemmin käsitysten taustalla vaikuttaviin ideologioihin, erityisesti niiden sisältämien demokratia- ja vapauskäsitysten osalta. Lisäksi tutkielman tulosten suhdetta käytännössä toteutettavaan kirjastotoimintaan olisi mielenkiintoista selvittää.

Kirjastojen merkitys on viime vuosikymmenen aikana kasvanut. Yhdysvaltalaistutkimuksen ”Perceptions of Libraries 2010” mukaan kirjasto on merkityksellinen palvelu etenkin niiden keskuudessa, joihin vuoden 2008 talouslama iski kaikkein ankarammin. Suomalaistutkimuksen ”Yleinen kirjasto kuntalaisten toimissa” mukaan kuva yleisestä kirjastosta kirjallisuuden, taiteen harrastamisen edistäjänä ja kulttuurin tarjoajana on myönteinen. Kirjastoilla voidaan sanoa olevan monimerkityksellisiä tarkoituksia, joita ne ovat palvelleet jo varhain ihmisten keskuudessa. Tutkimuskysymykset olen määritellyt seuraavasti: (1) Millaisia ovat käsitykset kirjastosta, eli miten kysymykset ja näkemykset kirjastosta instituutiona, paikkana ja palveluna näkyvät Kirjasto-lehden vuosien 2011–2016 vuosijulkaisujen teksteissä? (2) Millaisia ovat käsitykset kirjastonhoitajuudesta, eli miten kysymykset ja näkemykset kirjastonhoitajuuden käsitteeseen liittyvistä ulottuvuuksista, kirjastonhoitajuuden ammatillisesta identiteetistä sekä kirjastonhoitajuuden arvoista ja käytännöistä näkyvät Kirjasto-lehden vuosien 2011–2016 vuosijulkaisujen teksteissä? (3) Mitkä teoriani taustalla olevat käsitykset kirjastosta ja kirjastonhoitajuudesta korostuvat Kirjasto-lehden vuosien 2011–2016 vuosijulkaisujen teksteissä ja mitkä mahdollisesti eivät? Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytän sisällönanalyysia. Tutkimuksessani Kirjasto-lehden vuosijulkaisujen määrä on kuusi ja analysoitavien tekstien määrä on yhteensä 94. Tuloksien mukaan Kirjasto-lehden vuosien 2011–2016 vuosijulkaisuissa kirjoitetaan erilaisista kirjastoinstituutioista yleisistä kirjastoista merkittävästi enemmän kuin muista kirjastoista (tiedekirjasto, koulukirjasto, erikoiskirjasto, kansalliskirjasto). Teksteissä kirjoitetaan erilaisista yleisistä kirjastoista, kuten lähikirjastoista, kaupunginkirjastoista ja yleisistä kirjastoista ulkomailla. Kirjasto-lehden vuosijulkaisujen mukaan kirjastoilla on muitakin tehtäviä kuin niitä, jotka liittyvät aineistojen ja kokoelman ylläpitoon. Yleisiä kirjastoja suunnitellaan paikkoina sosiaalisen kirjastopaikan kontekstissa, joka korostaa kirjastoa paikkana, jossa voi kohdata ihmisiä ja harrastaa. Sosiaalinen kirjasto nähdään jopa paradigman muutoksena. Kirjoittajien kirjastomuistoihin liittyvät pääosin yleiset kirjastot ja fyysiset aineistot. Kirjaston aineistoihin liittyvissä teksteissä tuli useasti esille e-aineistojen käyttöön liittyvät tekijänoikeudelliset kysymykset. Tuloksissa tuli selville, että kirjastonhoitajalta odotetaan nykyaikaisen informaatioympäristön ja tekniikan tuntemusta sekä asiakaspalvelutaitoja. Kirjastonhoitajuuden tärkeimpänä arvona pidetään sananvapautta.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if muscle hypertrophy and strength gains in athletes can be equally attained through dietary protein intake versus protein supplementation. Methods: Performance measures, body composition, and blood lipids were compared in redshirt football players who completed an eleven week protocol of either protein supplementation (S, n=6, 28 grams 3x/week) versus whole food protein (NS, n=9, 8-28 grams 3x/week). Subjects completed two 3-day diet records to determine nutrient intake. Results: Both groups reported meeting their protein requirements, but caloric intake was below the recommendation. Similar increases (P=0.003) in lean body mass were measured in the S (pre 72.2 ± 6.6, post 73.0 ± 6.3 kg) and NS groups (69.3 ± 8.6, post 70.9 ± 8.8 kg). No significant differences were found between the two groups in performance variables. For example, bench press increased (P=0.01) from 251 ± 32 to 264 ± 36 pounds in the S group and from 245 ± 26 to 256 ± 28 in the NS group. Conclusion: Both S and NS groups consumed on average at least the recommended protein intake and protein supplementation did not offer any performance or anabolic advantage over whole food protein.

Et kiralt triazoliumbasert N-heterosykliskkarben-salt (NHC) 1 har blitt fremstilt fra L-fenylalanin 2 og fenylhydrazinhydroklorid 12 i en synteserute som går over fem trinn, og med et totalutbytte på 10%. NHC-salt 1 er blitt testet som organokatalysator i en sykliseringsreaksjon mellom aldehyd 4 og keton 5. Produktet, butyrolakton 6, ble dannet i et trans/cis-forhold på 59:41, og med et enantiomert overskudd på henholdsvis 10% og 19% for trans- og cis-forbindelse 6a og 6b.NHC-salt 1 ble testet som ligand i en gullkatalysert syklopropaneringsreaksjon. Gullkatalysator 15a og 15b ble syntetisert fra NHC-salt 1 og 16 ved hjelp av Ag2O og AuCl(Me2S) i et utbytte på henholdsvis 82% og 85%. Syklopropaneringsreaksjon mellom alkyn 18 og alken 19 ga syklopropylforbindelse 20 i et trans/cis-forhold på 41:59 for gullkatalysator 15a og 38:62 for gullkatalysator 15b. Gullkatalysator 15a ga et enantiomert overskudd på 8% og 6% for henholdsvis trans- og cis-forbindelse 20a og 20b. Gullkatalysator 15b ga et enantiomert overskudd på 10% og 9% for de samme forbindelsene. Dette er første gang en kiral triazolbasert NHC-gullkatalysator har blitt brukt i asymmetrisk syntese.

Prevalence of myxosporean parasites in mullets of Cochin backwaters was studied. Out of 110 fishes examined 40 (36,4%) fishes showed infection with myxosporeans. Seven species of myxosporeans, all belonging to the genus Myxobolus were recovered. Their prevalence varied from 1.8% to 16.4% individually. The intensity of infection in fishes ranged from 1 to 100. All the 7 species observed were found to be site/organ specific. No apparent pathological changes were observed on gross examination. Infection with myxosporean parasites was observed in gill rakers and pharyngeal region of mullets for the first time. Multiple infection was observed in 11 out of 110 (10%) fishes examined, Though heavy infections were observed in some cases, the fishes were apparently healthy.

Cette thèse explore les modalités d’articulation entre citoyenneté double, appartenance religieuse et revendications particularistes observées dans le processus de formation de la communauté samaritaine. Proches du judaïsme par la religion mais dont ils se démarquent, à la fois citoyens palestiniens et israéliens mais dont ils se distinguent, les Samaritains, qui constituent une minorité ethno-confessionnelle installée en Israël et en Palestine, manipulent leurs frontières identitaires pour s’ajuster à leur environnement, siège d’un conflit qui dure depuis des décennies. L’examen des reconfigurations territoriales, administratives et politiques depuis la fin du XIXe siècle et la façon dont elles ont induit des déplacements multiformes (géographiques, sociaux, identitaires) pour les Samaritains donne un éclairage sur la manière dont celles-ci affectent leur géographie sociale et symbolique. Par le biais d’un mouvement de va-et-vient volontaire entre les matériaux historiques (textes de voyageurs, rapports d’explorations scientifiques, archives, recensements) et les données recueillies lors de l’enquête ethnographique, cette recherche met en perspective les effets de la production d’un « mythe orientaliste » dans les différentes phases de réajustement – d’ouverture et de fermeture – des frontières de la communauté. Elle s’attachera à analyser comment la construction d’un particularisme samaritain joue un rôle décisif dans le processus d’attribution d’un statut social (économique, de prestige) et administratif (citoyenneté).Au croisement des approches anthropologique et épistémologique, mon ambition est d’approfondir la réflexion sur les formes d’ « authentification savantes » (Ciarcia, 2003) des traditions samaritaines par le regard extérieur et leur réappropriation indigène, imbriquée aux enjeux sociaux et politiques. Ainsi, des écrits littéraires et scientifiques (dans le champ de l’anthropologie physique, de la génétique, de l’histoire et de la philologie) allant du XIXe au milieu du XXe siècle sont mobilisés dans des contextes touristiques et patrimoniaux par différentes catégories d’acteurs. L’analyse des discours prononcés par les représentants samaritains en contexte touristique permet d’appréhender l’investissement local de ces images – et leur circulation – dans les pratiques de valorisation du patrimoine et de resacralisation du lieu saint, le mont Garizim. Dès lors, celui-ci apparaît comme le point de repère symbolique et le support identitaire sur lequel sont projetés des imaginaires collectifs, communautaires, nationaux et transnationaux. Du traitement des modalités d’inclusion des Samaritains aux sociétés israélienne et palestinienne à l’utilisation de la religion comme ressource culturelle en passant par la mobilisation d’un regard orientaliste, cette thèse propose une approche originale du cas samaritain mettant l’accent sur l’articulation entre enracinement et mobilités
This thesis explores the relation between dual citizenship, religious affiliation and particularist claims observed in the formation process of the Samaritan community. Close to Judaism through religion but from which they stand out, citizens of either Palestine and Israel – where they live as an ethno-confessional minority – from whom they differentiate themselves, the Samaritans adjust their identity according to their environment, the theatre of a decades long conflict. The study of territorial, administrative and political reconfigurations since the late 19th century and how they led to multifaceted movements (geographical, social, identity) among Samaritans, sheds light on how they affect social and symbolic borders. Deliberately alternating between historical material (travellers' texts, scientific exploration reports, archives, censuses) and the data collected during the ethnographic survey, this research puts into perspective the production of an "orientalist myth" and its role in the various phases of readjustment – opening and closing – of the community's borders. It will analyse how the construction of Samaritan particularism played a key part in the process of granting social (economic, prestige) and administrative (citizenship) status, and helps to establish social and symbolic boundaries. At a crossroads between anthropological and epistemological approaches, my ambition is to go further into the forms of "scholarly authentication" (Ciarcia, 2003) of Samaritan traditions from an external perspective as well as their indigenous re-appropriation, intertwined with social and political issues. Thus, literary and scientific writings (in the field of physical anthropology, genetics, history and philology) from the 19th to the mid-20th century are put to use in a context of tourism and heritage according to categories of participants. The analysis of the speeches delivered by Samaritan representatives in a tourism context makes it possible to understand the local investment of these images – and their circulation – in order to highlight local heritage and re sacralise a place of worship, Mount Garizim. For it became the symbolic landmark and the identity bedrock to both national and transnational groups and communities. From the inclusion process of Samaritans in Israeli and Palestinian societies to the use of religion as a cultural resource and the mobilisation of an orientalist perspective, this thesis offers an unusual approach to the Samaritan case, emphasizing the balance between rooting and mobility

Helle Kannila kirjoitti teoksessa ”Kirjavalinnan ongelmia”, että kirjat ovat tärkein asia kirjastossa ja kaikki muu oheistoiminta siellä on vain keino saattaa kirjaston käyttäjä kirjojen äärelle. Suomessa tehdyn selvityksen mukaan kuntalaiset hyödyntävät kirjastoja kaunokirjallisuuden ja taiteen hankintakanavana. Vuonna 2010 Yhdysvalloissa julkistettiin selvitys ”Perceptions of libraries, 2010”, jossa selvitettiin ihmisten ajatuksia ja mielipiteitä kirjastosta ja sen tarkoituksesta. Selvityksen mukaan ihmisillä tulee kirjastoista ensin mieleen kirjat ja kirjojen lainaaminen. Tietoyhteiskunnan kehittyessä kirjastoammattilaisilta odotetaan entistä laaja-alaisempaa osaamista, jota kutsutaan moniosaamiseksi. Mikä on kaunokirjallisuuden tuntemuksen asema? Kandidaatintutkielmassani pyrin selvittämään, millaisia ajatuksia kirjastoalaan valmentavien koulutusohjelmien opiskelijoilla on kaunokirjallisuuden tuntemuksesta. Kohderyhmänäni on Oulun yliopiston informaatiotutkimuksen pääaineopiskelijat ja Oulun ammattikorkeakoulun kirjasto- ja tietopalvelun opiskelijat. Kaunokirjallisuuden tuntemusta avatakseni määrittelen kaunokirjallisuuden hyödyntämällä historiallis-systemaattista tapaa, eli kaunokirjallisuuden historian ohella pyrin tuomaan eri aikoina kirjallisuuteen liittyviä konventioita. Kaunokirjallisuuden tuntemukseen voidaan kirjastotyön kontekstissa liittää myös kaunokirjallisuuden sisällönkuvailuun liittyviä seikkoja, jotka esitän tutkielmassani. Tuon esille myös Suomen yleisten kirjastojen tilastoja vuodelta 2014 havainnollistaakseni sen, miten kaunokirjallisuus näkyy yleisten kirjastojen kokoelma-, lainaus- ja hankintatilastoissa. Suomen yleisten kirjastojen tilastojen mukaan vuonna 2014 Suomen yleisten kirjastojen kokoelmista noin 50 prosenttia on aikuisten ja lasten kaunokirjoja ja lainaustilastojen mukaan kaunokirjoja lainataan yleisten kirjastojen kokoelmista eniten. Tuon myös esille aiempaa tutkimusta liittyen kaunokirjallisuuden tuntemukseen yleisissä kirjastoissa. Tutkielmassani olen ottanut vertailukohteeksi Pirjo Tuomen kirjastoammattilaisille suunnatun ”pitääkö kirjastoissa tietää kirjoista” -kyselyn, jossa Tuomi kysyi kirjastoalan ammattilaisilta näkemyksiä kaunokirjallisuuden tuntemuksesta ja kirjastoalaan valmentavasta koulutuksesta. Tutkimusmenetelmänäni toimi sekä määrällisiä että laadullisia piirteitä sisältävä webropol-verkkokysely. Kyselyyni vastasi yhteensä 68 ihmistä, joista 19 opiskelevat Oulun yliopistossa informaatiotutkimusta pääaineenaan ja 49 Oulun ammattikorkeakoulussa kirjasto- ja tietopalvelun koulutusohjelmassa. Kyselyyni vastanneet opiskelijat pitävät kaunokirjallisuuden tuntemusta tärkeänä. Kaunokirjallisuuden harrastuneisuus on kyselyyn vastanneiden keskuudessa monipuolista. He seuraavat kaunokirjallisuuteen liittyviä uutisia ja kirja-arvosteluita. Kaunokirjallisuuden tuntemusta ylläpitävänä tekijänä vastanneet pitävät kaunokirjallisuuden lukemista. Yliopisto-opiskelijoista lähes puolella on sivuaineopinnoissaan kirjallisuuden oppiaine ja Oulun ammattikorkeakoulun kirjasto- ja tietopalvelun opiskelijoiden opetussuunnitelmaan kuuluu kirjallisuuden opintoja. Vastanneista suurin osa haluaa työskennellä tulevaisuudessa yleisissä kirjastoissa ja he pitävät kaunokirjallisuuden tuntemusta yleisissä kirjastoissa tärkeänä ammattiin kuuluvana taitona.

John Waters Kirwan (1866-1949) played a pivotal role in the Australian Federal movement. At a time when the Premier of Western Australia Sir John Forrest had begun to doubt the wisdom of his resource rich but under-developed colony joining the emerging Commonwealth, Kirwan conspired with Perth Federalists, Walter James and George Leake, to force Forrest’s hand. Editor and partowner of the influential Kalgoorlie Miner, the ‘pocket-handkerchief’ newspaper he had transformed into one of the most powerful journals in the colony, he waged a virulent press campaign against the besieged Premier, mocking and belittling him at every turn and encouraging his east coast colleagues to follow suit. A founding member of the Eastern Goldfields Reform League, which convened to bring Western Australia into the national union, he spearheaded the ‘Separation for Federation’ agitation, arguing in the Miner that, if the colony did not federate, the Goldfields should go it alone. Of itself, this was nothing more than an audacious bluff designed to humble Forrest and his supporters, but exploited by key players such as James, Leake, Alfred Deakin, Charles Cameron Kingston, Patrick McMahon Glynn and Josiah Symon, even Colonial Secretary Joseph Chamberlain, it proved an effective weapon. Chamberlain, in his controversial 27 April 1900 cable to Acting Governor Onslow, alluded to the ‘agitation of the Federalist party…in goldfields’ before urging Forrest to ‘bring the Colony into Federation at once’. Friends since his days as editor of the Port Augusta Dispatch (1893-95), Kirwan enlisted South Australian lawyers and parliamentarians Kingston, Glynn and Symon to redraft his petition to the Queen and advise the Separatists. This thesis, the first full-length biography of John Waters Kirwan, is also the first to examine in detail his service to what Kingston called ‘the sacred cause’ of national unity. From his arrival in Queensland in 1889 to his Presidency of the Western Australian Legislative Council nearly 40 years later, it gives new weight to his contribution while pondering why, after such a spectacular debut, he failed to make the most of his short-lived Federal parliamentary career.

Este memorial tem como principal objetivo apontar as inter-relações existentes entre a concepção estética dos ciclos vitais e os processos técnico-composicionais utilizados em um conjunto de composições. A concepção estética dos ciclos vitais foi obtida através de uma pesquisa baseada na análise de obras compostas anteriormente a este conjunto, e em dois referenciais teóricos principais, "Fenomenologia do Espírito" de Hegel e "O Tao da Física: um paralelo entre a física moderna e o misticismo oriental" de Capra. Também encontra fundamentos na utilização de estruturas simétricas, da proporção áurea e da série de Fibonacci, a partir de sua ligação com a natureza. As inter-relações entre as concepções estéticas e os processos técnico-composicionais são demonstradas através da análise das obras como um conjunto e individualmente. As semelhanças estruturais e dos materiais musicais unificam estas obras, caracterizando-as como um ciclo de composições, o qual reflete na macroestrutura os elementos individuais de cada composição.

Etude visant à mettre en évidence des invariants ethniques contenus dans la nature du Berserk en s'intéressant aux aspects philologiques, historiques, archéologiques, toxicologiques et culturels. Nous définissons ensuite le stéréotype du Berserk en tant que réponse adaptée a une situation de tensions sociales avant la transformation de ce phénomène c'est-à-dire son intégration lors de la christianisation. Nous étendons ce concept a d'autres cultures et en particulier hors du territoire viking c'est-à-dire l'Amérique centrale et la Grèce. Ainsi le bla retrouve chez les indiens miskitos de la côte est du Nicaragua et du Honduras est un comportement proche du berserk en tant que rage destructrice et que réponse socialement adaptée a une situation d'acculturation particulièrement vive. Une étude épidémiologique, statistique et toxicologique a été réalisée en 1986-87. Ces phénomènes peuvent être associes en tant que désordre ethnique a des récits de la mythologie grecque tels que ceux d’Ajax, d'Héraclès et d’Oreste. Dans ces mythes apparaissent des divinités archaïques comme les errinies et les keres qui jouent un rôle dans les conflits lies aux situations d'acculturation qui se sont manifestes lors de la première conquête de la Grèce entre doriens et achéens. Nous concluons sur les rapports existants entre fureur et identité ethniques, et entre désordre ethnique et culpabilité sociale nous conduisant à associer les phénomènes observes et la représentation de la mort
Study of nature of ethnics in variance inside the berserk's phenomens in their philologicals, historical archeological, toxicological an cultural aspects. Definition of the stereotype of berserk like a response for a situation with social tension before the Christianization of the Vikings territories. Extension of those concepts to other cultural practice: the bla of Miskito founded in the Nicaraguayan and Honduran coast are near of berserk's nature. They are like a destrutive rage linked to acculturation's situation. Cette thèse porte sur le culte de Viṭhobā, une divinité du salut au Maharashtra. Ce culte fait l’objet de plusieurs traditions dévotionnelles. Or, celles-ci ne se distinguent pas par référence à un saint éponyme mais par leurs pratiques dévotionnelles, qui définissent leurs approches elles-mêmes. Ainsi, bien qu’ils attribuent à des saints dits sant la fondation de leur culte, c’est en tant que « Pèlerins » que se définissent étymologiquement les « Vārkarī ». Les kīrtankār Nāradīya, des Brahmanes, caractérisent eux leurs célébrations, dites kīrtan, en référence à la figure emblématique de Nārada, le conteur céleste. C’est encore dans le rituel du kālā ou banquet, que les chantres du temple de Viṭhobā de Panḍharpūr, lieu saint originel de la divinité, légitiment leur statut et leur fonction. Par conséquent, à travers ces pratiques dévotionnelles collectives elles-mêmes, et les représentations qu’elles mettent en œuvre, on essaiera de démontrer les implications sociales de ces différentes approches : celle de la sainteté et celles brahmaniques. Finalement, si le salut repose sur le principe d’une participation universelle, chacun à sa manière, y affirme ses particularités
This thesis deals with the cult of Viṭhobā, a divinity of salvation in Maharashtra. This cult is the object of several devotional traditions. These traditions don’t refer themselves to an eponym saint but through their devotional practices, which define their way of being in itself. Thus, although they establish their foundation by referring to saints called sant, the Vārkarī etymologically define themselves as “Pilgrims”. As for the nāradīya kīrtankār, Brahmans, they define themselves by their celebrations, called kīrtan, with reference to the emblematic character of Narad, the celestial storyteller. It is still in the kālā ritual or banquet that the singers of Viṭhobā’s temple in Panḍharpūr, which is the divinity’s original place, legitimize their status and their function. Consequently, through these collective practices in themselves, and the representations they implement, we’ll try to demonstrate the social implications of these different approaches: the one of saintliness and the other, brahmanical. Finally, if salvation is based on universal participation, each, in its own way, affirms its own particularity

Abstract The two rhetorical approaches to Finnish Lapland are the mythical and the miserable produced in the realms of tourism and politics respectively. The locals comply with neither. In this research the notion of beauty is used in seeking to understand how life is perceived as good-enough by particular villagers of a remote northern village. The scope of this research is novel theoretically and methodologically. The combination of everyday life aesthetics and education outside of institutional art education is rare and the method of data collection, collective correspondence, is created for the purposes of this research. Education is approached in this research as our perpetual growing in everyday life. Education and aesthetics receive support from sociology and human geography as well as environmental ethics. The theoretical frame leans on Ludwig Wittgenstein's notions of language use: language is woven into the actions of ordinary life, used not only to describe but to act on and transform the world. The objectives of this research in brief are to 1) complement art-centered definitions of the notion of beauty, 2) argue for the significance of diversity of habitable places, and 3) to contribute positively to the prevailingly negative research rhetoric on life in northern Finnish villages. These objectives are tackled with research tasks unfolding as descriptive, interpretative and methodological respectively: 1) of what kind is perceived beauty in everyday life led in a small northern village? 2) What is the significance of considering beauty in everyday life? 3) What kind of data does correspondence yield on perceived beauty? There are four women participating in this research. They exchanged letters on the topic of everyday beauty once a month for a year. Together they comprise a group that varies in ages, education, employment, family structures and the length of stay in the village. What they share is a view of their home village as a good-enough place to live in. The main data consists of 44 letters supplemented by 10 interviews. The letters have been read as one correspondence and as four individual sets of letters. Recurring themes, the temporal and spatial evolving of them as well as the performative aspects of writing have been addressed. Beauty has been found to reside in an iterative linguistic process rather than fixed in objects or even themes. Beauty articulates condensations of significant relations the perceiving individual holds in her life. As such beauty in everyday life is relational, active and pertains to steering of one's life. The ability to relate to the environment in which you live in a personally meaningful and creative way is found to be facilitated by an environment of diversity. Rather than keeping the rural North habited I argue for ensuring that it is habitable for those who wish to live there. This means realizing that people craft good-enough lives in different ways relative to their everyday life environments
Tiivistelmä Lapista puhutaan kahdella tavalla, joista kumpikaan ei tavoita täysin lappilaisten itsensä arkikokemusta: Lappia värittää paikkana joko myyttisyys tai kurjuus. Näitä kahta kuvaa ylläpitävät pääasiassa turismi ja politiikka. Tässä tutkimuksessa käytetään ilmausta "kaunis" yritettäessä ymmärtää elämää pohjoisessa pienkylässä riittävän hyväksi koettuna. Tutkimus on sekä teoreettisesti että metodologisesti monitieteinen ja uutta luova. Arjen estetiikan ja kasvatustieteen yhdistäminen taidekasvatuksen sisältöalueen ulkopuolella on harvinaista. Tutkimuksessa on käytetty aineistonkeruumenetelmänä kirjeenvaihtoa, ja erityisesti sen kollektiivista muotoa, joka on kehitetty tätä tutkimusta varten. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan kasvatustieteen avulla arkeen kietoutuvaa kasvua ihmisenä. Sosiologia, kulttuurimaantiede ja ympäristöetiikka täydentävät kasvatustiedettä ja estetiikkaa. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys nojaa Ludwig Wittgensteinin huomioihin kielen käytöstä arjessa. Kieli on kietoutunut arjen toimintoihin ja on käytössä paitsi maailman kuvaamisessa myös sen muuttamisessa. Tutkimuksen tavoitteet ovat lyhyesti: 1) laajentaa "kauniin" taidemaailmaan nojautuvaa määrittelyä, 2) argumentoida ihmisen elinympäristöjen monimuotoisuuden puolesta sekä 3) täydentää lähtökohtaisesti positiivisella tutkimusotteella pohjoisen pienkylien elämästä tuotettua pääosin negatiivista tutkimusretoriikkaa. Tavoitteita lähestytään kolmella tutkimustehtävällä, jotka jakaantuvat kuvailevaksi, tulkinnalliseksi ja metodologiseksi. Tutkimustehtävät ovat: 1) minkälaista on kaunis pohjoisen pienkylän arjessa? 2) Mitä merkitystä on kauniin pohtimisella arjessa? 3) Minkälaista aineistoa kirjeenvaihto tuottaa kauneudesta? Tutkimukseen on osallistunut neljä naista. Jokainen heistä on kirjoittanut kirjeitä kauneudesta arjessaan ja vaihtanut kirjeitä kerran kuussa vuoden ajan. Naisten iät, koulutustaustat, työllisyystilanteet, perherakenteet sekä kylässä asuttu aika vaihtelevat. Heitä yhdistää näkemys kotikylästään riittävän hyvänä asuinpaikkana. Tutkimuksen pääasiallinen aineisto koostuu 44 kirjeestä, joita täydentää kymmenen haastattelua. Kirjeaineisto on luettu sekä yhtenä kirjeenvaihtona että neljänä osana, kunkin osallistujan kirjeet erikseen. Kirjeistä on tavoiteltu toistuvia teemoja ja näiden ajallista ja tilallista muotoutumista. Lisäksi kirjoituksia on pohdittu harkittuina esityksinä. Kaunis on todettu jatkuvaksi itseään korjaavaksi kielelliseksi prosessiksi sen sijaan, että se olisi paikantunut kiinteästi esineisiin, asioihin tai edes teemoihin. Arjen kaunis kiinnittyy kunkin elämässä merkityksellisiin suhteisiin. Kielellisenä prosessina kaunis ilmentää aktiivista ja luovaa toimijuutta ja liittyy elämän ohjailemiseen. Monimuotoisuus tukee kykyä muodostaa ja tiedostaa merkityksellisiä ja luovia suhteita elinympäristöön. Sen sijaan, että tutkimuksessa argumentoitaisiin pohjoisten kylien asuttamisen puolesta tutkimus esittää että pienkylien asuttavuus tulisi turvata sellaisille jotka haluavat asua kylissä. Tämä edellyttää ymmärrystä siitä, että ihmiset tekevät elämästään riittävän hyvää laadullisesti eri tavoilla erilaisissa ympäristöissä

KirBac channels are prokaryotic homologs of eukaryotic inwardly-rectifying potassium channels, which have served as models for gaining insight into the structure of eukaryotic channels. This thesis focuses on the structure-function relationship in these channels. The first part of this study concerns a novel KirBac channel, KirBac9.2, which contains a unique amino acid sequence in the place of the canonical GYG selectivity filter. Although expressed and purified in a stable and functional form, the protein did not form well-diffracting crystals. Functional studies suggest that KirBac9.2 is non-selective for monovalent cations and a random mutagenesis screen identified a number of activatory mutants in the cytoplasmic domains of the channel. A full electrophysiological investigation of KirBac9.2 channel function is beyond the scope of this study. However, initial studies suggest that it is possible to record currents from KirBac9.2 channels reconstituted into lipid bilayers. The second part of this thesis investigates KirBac3.1, which is a classical KirBac channel containing the consensus GYG sequence for potassium selectivity. Five high resolution structures of a mutant channel are reported, which suggest a new feature in the gating mechanism of KirBac3.1 where a rotation of the cytoplasmic domains is linked to a change in the electrostatic environment of the cytoplasmic cavity. In addition, a functional study of the KirBac3.1 showed that the channel is highly pH sensitive.
