Reports excavations in areas thought to encompass the donjon and hall respectively. Traces of an early curtain wall predating the north tower were found. At ground level, two window embrasures were revealed in the east wall of the building and, on its south side, a doorway into a passage linking with the east range. In the late seventeenth or eighteenth century the passage was blocked and a fireplace inserted into the north gable of the east range, which was occupied at least until the late eighteenth century. There are specialist reports on: `Sculptured stones' by Pamela Graves (576--8); `Coins' by Nicholas M McQ Holmes (578--9); `Other small finds' by David Caldwell (579--87); `Pottery' by Helen Smith (587 & 589) followed by `Medieval and post-medieval pottery' by Robert S Will (589--90); `Clay tobacco pipes' by Dennis B Gallagher (590--6); `Vessel glass' by K R Murdoch (596--7); The environmental evidence begins with `Charcoal' by Sheila Boardman (597), followed by `Faunal remains' by Tanya O'Sullivan & Jennifer Thoms (597--8).

The response of segmental filtration coefficients ( K f) to high peak inflation pressure (PIP) injury was determined in isolated perfused rat lungs. Total ( K f,t), arterial ( K f,a), and venous ( K f,v) filtration coefficients were measured under baseline conditions and after ventilation with 40–45 cmH2O PIP. K f,a and K f,v were measured under zone I conditions by increasing airway pressure to 25–27 cmH2O. The microvascular segment K f ( K f,mv) was then calculated by: K f,mv = K f,t − K f,a − K f,v. The baseline K f,twas 0.090 ± 0.022 ml · min−1 · cmH2O−1 · 100 g−1 and segmentally distributed 18% arterial, 41% venous, and 41% microvascular. After high PIP injury, K f,t increased by 680%, whereas K f,a, K f,v, and K f,mv increased by 398, 589, and 975%, respectively. Pretreatment with 50 μM gadolinium chloride prevented the high PIP-induced increase in K f in all vascular segments. These data imply a lower hydraulic conductance for microvascular endothelium due to its large surface area and a gadolinium-sensitive high-PIP injury, produced in both alveolar and extra-alveolar vessel segments.

Specifically, we associate in a natural way an infinite family of integral packings of circles to any Kleinian group ${\mathcal{A}}\leqslant \text{PSL}_{2}(K)$ satisfying certain conditions, where $K$ is an imaginary quadratic field, and show that the curvatures of the circles in any such packing satisfy an almost local-to-global principle. A key ingredient in the proof is that ${\mathcal{A}}$ possesses a spectral gap property, which we prove for any infinite-covolume, geometrically finite, Zariski dense Kleinian group in $\operatorname{PSL}_{2}({\mathcal{O}}_{K})$ containing a Zariski dense subgroup of $\operatorname{PSL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$.

We utilized a mixed-methods design to understand how a national sample of 589 school counselors adapted their approach to address K–12 students’ academic, social/emotional, and career development during the COVID-19 pandemic. More specifically, we examined how COVID-19–induced disparities influenced school counselors’ delivery of services. We identified six themes using thematic analysis and conducted a t test to further understand what services and strategies counselors were actively using 6 months after the onset of COVID-19. Our findings suggest that school counselors continued to adjust their comprehensive school counseling programs to address pandemic-induced disparities.

A 42-year-old man was admitted to the emergency room complaining of fever and headache. His cerebrospinal fluid showed a cloudy appearance, and his white blood cell count was elevated at 2460/mm3, with a predominance of neutrophils (81%), and abnormal protein and glucose levels (510.7 mg/dL and 5 mg/dL, respectively). A lobulated lesion with rim enhancement, suggestive of abscess, was detected through magnetic resonance imaging. Klebsiella pneumoniae was detected in nasopharyngeal swab and blood cultures. The capsular serotype of K. pneumoniae was K2 and the sequence type determined by multilocus sequence typing was 23. The hypervirulent phenotype was associated with multiple virulent genes, including rmpA, rmpA2, entB, ybtS, kfu, iucA, iutA, iroB mrkD, allS, peg-344, peg-589, and peg-1631. After six weeks of receiving appropriate antibiotics and exhibiting clinical resolution of the brain abscesses, the patient was discharged. We present the first reported case of a healthy community-dwelling adult with solitary brain abscesses, and no other invasive abscesses, related to hypervirulent K. pneumoniae.

AbstractElectron probe microanalyses of zoisites from high-grade metamorphic rocks in Galicia, NW Spain have been obtained. The elements Na, Mg, P, K, Ti, and Mn were not detected above the 0.1 wt. % level. Assuming all Fe is present as Fe3+, a clear relation is obtained between the Fe content and the optic axial angle. Zoisite with 1.6 wt. % Fe2O3 proves to be uniaxial at 589 nm; uniaxiality in blue light (470 nm) lies at 1.5 wt. % Fe2O3. A change of the optic sign, from positive to negative, is obtained at 2.9 wt. % Fe2O3. The presence of minor elements greatly affects this relation, as is indicated by analyses of sector-zoned Sr-bearing zoisites of a muscovite-zoisite pegmatite from the same region. Under retrograde conditions Fe-rich α-zoisite reacts to form less Fe-rich α-zoisite or β-zoisite and clinozoisite.

AbstractBelomarinaite, ideally KNaSO4, is a new sulfate mineral discovered in the Toludskoe lava field, formed during the 2012–2013 Tolbachik Fissure eruption. The mineral occurs as arborescent aggregates of tabular crystals (1 mm × 0.3 mm × 0.1 mm) comprising hematite impurities. The average size of the aggregates is 0.5–0.7 mm. The empirical formula is (K0.95Na0.92Cu0.04)Σ1.91S1.01O4. The crystal structure of belomarinaite was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data; the space group isP3m1,a= 5.6072(3),c= 7.1781(4) Å,V= 195.45(2) Å3,Z= 2 andR1= 2.6%. In the crystal structure of belomarinaite, there are six cation sites: the[4]S1 and[4]S2 sites are occupied by S, the[6]Na and[12]K sites are occupied by Na and K, respectively, giving Na0.5K0.5apfu and the[10]M1 and[10]M2 sites are occupied by Na0.78K0.22and K0.78Na0.22apfu, respectively. The crystal structure is a framework of SO4tetrahedra, Na octahedra and K,M1 andM2 polyhedra. Belomarinaite is isostructural with the synthetic compound KNaSO4. In belomarinaite, Na and K are disordered overM1 andM2 sites; in its synthetic analogue, Na and K are ordered overM1 andM2 sites, respectively. The Mohs’ hardness is 2–3. The mineral is uniaxial (+), with ω = 1.485(3) and ε = 1.488(3) (λ = 589 nm). The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I, %) (hkl)] are: 4.022(31)(101); 3.591(26)(002); 2.884(74)(102); 2.800(100)(110); 2.391(16)(003); 2.296(8)201; 2.008(38)(022); and 1.634(10)(212). The mineral was named in honour of Russian volcanologist Marina Gennadievna Belousova (b. 1960) for her significant contributions to the monitoring of the Tolbachik Fissure eruption.

Experiments were conducted on high-energy surface treatment of a structural steel substrate with a flow of tungsten, nickel, and titanium nitride powder particles. The impact pressure of the steel target and particles accelerated by explosion energy was estimated using the momentum conservation equation and the linear equation of the particle material shock adiabat. It was found that the impact pressure of the target and particles is 62 GPa for a tungsten particle, 48 GPa for a nickel particle, and 41 GPa for a titanium nitride particle. The heating temperature of particles during their collision with the steel target surface was calculated taking into account the conditions of mass and momentum conservation at the shock wave front. The maximum heating temperature of particles at the point of their collision with the substrate surface (at a particle velocity of 2000 m/s) is 1103 K for tungsten particles, 755 K for nickel particles, and 589 K for titanium nitride particles. It was shown that the steel target strength increases when it is subjected to high-energy treatment with a flow of particles. The maximum hardening of the steel target surface layer increases by 32–55 % compared to initial microhardness and is observed at a depth of 2–4 mm from the treatment surface. Then it decreases to the value of starting material microhardness (170 HV) at a distance of 15–20 mm from the treated surface.

In order to obtain high yields of winter durum wheat, it is necessary not only to use advanced agricultural technologies, but also to sow varieties resistant to major diseases. One of these diseases that cause great harm to grain crops is Septoria leaf blotch. The current paper has presented the study results of collection material of Russian and foreign winter durum wheat according to the efficiency of the Septoria leaf blotch resistance gene Stb2 in the North Caucasus region. The purpose of the current study was to identify the Septoria leaf blotch resistance gene Stb2 in the collection material of winter durum wheat. The study was carried out in 2017–2018 in the laboratory of marker breeding of the FSBSI “ARC “Donskoy” in Zernograd. In the course of the study there have been applied such methods as the isolation of genomic DNA by the CTAB-method, PCR-analysis with the molecular SSR marker WMS533, electrophoresis on 2% agarose gel, analysis of electrophoresis gels in the Bio-Rad Image Lab 6.0 software, general data analysis by Microsoft Excel. The present study proposed an application of the Rahim’ Model of Conflict Management, and aimed to explore the styles of handling interpersonal conflicts with students adopted by teachers from five European countries (Italy, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Austria), identifying specific patterns and evaluating potential differences according to teachers' Gender, Age, Working Seniority and Country of belonging. Overall, 589 secondary school teachers completed a questionnaire consisting of Socio-demographic characteristics and the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory-II (ROCI-II, Form B). Non-hierarchical k-means cluster analysis was employed to derive patterns of conflict management, identifying four patterns labelled as Multi-strategic and Engaged, Multi-strategic and Solution-Oriented, Control-Oriented and Avoidant, and Mediating. Significant differences between countries were found in the numbers of teachers grouped across the four patterns. Findings identified stable and meaningful patterns for evaluating teachers' styles of management of interpersonal conflicts with students and for promoting teachers’ effectiveness in conflict management in the European school context.

A mathematical model of the outer medullary collecting duct (OMCD) has been developed, consisting of α-intercalated cells and a paracellular pathway, and which includes Na+, K+, Cl−, HCO3 −, CO2, H2CO3, phosphate, ammonia, and urea. Proton secretion across the luminal cell membrane is mediated by both H+-ATPase and H-K-ATPase, with fluxes through the H-K-ATPase given by a previously developed kinetic model (Weinstein AM. Am J Physiol Renal Physiol 274: F856–F867, 1998). The flux across each ATPase is substantial, and variation in abundance of either pump can be used to control OMCD proton secretion. In comparison with the H+-ATPase, flux through the H-K-ATPase is relatively insensitive to changes in lumen pH, so as luminal acidification proceeds, proton secretion shifts toward this pathway. Peritubular HCO3 − exit is via a conductive pathway and via the Cl−/HCO3 −exchanger, AE1. To represent AE1, a kinetic model has been developed based on transport studies obtained at 38°C in red blood cells. (Gasbjerg PK, Knauf PA, and Brahm J. J Gen Physiol 108: 565–575, 1996; Knauf PA, Gasbjerg PK, and Brahm J. J Gen Physiol 108: 577–589, 1996). Model calculations indicate that if all of the chloride entry via AE1 recycles across a peritubular chloride channel and if this channel is anything other than highly selective for chloride, then it should conduct a substantial fraction of the bicarbonate exit. Since both luminal membrane proton pumps are sensitive to small changes in cytosolic pH, variation in density of either AE1 or peritubular anion conductance can modulate OMCD proton secretory rate. With respect to the OMCD in situ, available buffer is predicted to be abundant, including delivered HCO3 −and HPO4 2−, as well as peritubular NH3. Thus, buffer availability is unlikely to exert a regulatory role in total proton secretion by this tubule segment.

AbstractIn specimens of Mn skarn from the type locality of Långban, hyalotekite, (Ba,Pb,K)4Ca2−(Si,B,Be)12O28F, occurs in a matrix consisting mostly of aegirine (⩽22 mol.% CaMnSi2O6), andradite (⩽27 mol.% Mn3Fe2Si3O12), hematite, pectolite, quartz, calcite, baryte, barylite, and hedyphane. Melanotekite, plumbian taramellite, ferrian K-feldspar (to 6.5 wt.% Fe2O3), rhodonite, a talc-like mineral, apophyllite, and several Pb-As-Sb-O minerals are found in trace amounts. In a single specimen of reedmergnerite-microcline pegmatite from Dara-i-Pioz, hyalotekite occurs in close association with microcline. Other accessory minerals are albite, aegirine, pyrochlore, eudialyte, and polylithionite. The optical constants for hyalotekite from Långban and Dara-i-Pioz are, respectively, α = 1.656, 1.646, β = 1.659–1.660, 1.649, γ = 1.670–1.671, 1.659 (all ± 0.002), 2Vγ (mcas) = 57.2–60.5 ± 0.5°, 57.0 ± 1.1°(λ = 589 nm). Cell parameters of the Dara-i-Pioz hyalotekite for a body-centred triclinic cell are: a = 11.284(2), b = 10.930(1), c = 10.272(8) Å, α = 90.35(2)°, β = 90.11(3)°, γ = 89.98(1)°. Electron and ion microprobe data show that Långban hyalotekite is heterogeneous even within a given sample; the most important substitutions are Pb = Ba, K and coupled B = Si and B = Be. Minor constituents include Mn in the Långban hyalotekite and Na in the Dara-i-Pioz hyalotekite, which also differs in its significantly higher Ba/Pb ratio. Conditions suggested for hyalotekite formation at Långban and Dara-i-Pioz are P ⩽ 4 kbar, T ⩾ 500°C, silica saturation, peralkalinity, and relatively high oxygen fugacities and low sulphur fugacities. These temperatures must have been sufficiently high to allow for miscibility of Pb with Ba (and K) despite the lone pair of electrons of Pb2+.

Abstract Background Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is commonly complicated by complex coagulopathy. The early use of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) appears to have reduced induction mortality; however, with modern regimens the risk of early hemorrhagic death remains at about 5-10% in clinical trials and up to 30% in population-based studies. Previously identified as markers of bleeding risk in this setting are: white blood cell count (WBC), peripheral blood blast count, platelet count, fibrinogen, prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and creatinine. Nonetheless, uncertainty remains as to which ones are independent predictors. Materials and Methods The database for study was from APL patients enrolled on three large clinical trials that used ATRA for induction: APML3 (single arm of ATRA + idarubicin ± prednisone), APML4 (single arm of ATRA + idarubicin + arsenic trioxide + prednisone) and ECOG 2491 (intergroup I0129, consisting of daunorubicin + cytarabine vs ATRA). Known determinants of bleeding were assessed at baseline and considered as potential predictors of hemorrhagic death in the first 30 days of induction. In univariate analysis, using Wilcoxon Rank Sum and Fisher’s exact test, we looked at the association of the parameters mentioned above with hemorrhagic death within 30 days of induction. Results A total of 619 patients were enrolled: ECOG 2491 (intergroup I0129) - 394, APML3 - 101, and APML4 -124. Among these, thirty (4.8%) deaths from bleeding during the first 30 days (early deaths, ED) following induction were recorded. Baseline characteristics of the patients are shown in Table 1 and Table 2. Initial coagulation parameters (PT, aPTT and fibrinogen) were not available for the ECOG trial. Parameters with significant differences between the ED cases and the remaining of the cohort included WBC (median: 7.4 vs 2.4 /Kmcl respectively, p<0.001), peripheral blood blast count (median: 1.0 vs 0.2 /Kmcl respectively, p=0.049) and platelet count (median: 20 vs 33 /Kmcl respectively, p=0.002). Conclusions In this large cohort of approximately 600 APL patients enrolled on 3 large clinical trials, higher WBC, peripheral blast count and lower platelet count emerged as univariate predictors of early hemorrhagic death. Surprisingly, age, PT, aPTT, fibrinogen and creatinine clearance did not differ between the patients who died from bleeding and the remaining of the cohort. Multivariate analysis will clarify the relative strength of the significant predictors in assessing ED, and will be available, along with coagulation parameters for ECOG, at the time of presentation. These data hopefully will allow us to build a clinical prediction rule to identify patients at the highest risk of early hemorrhagic death. Such a stratification tool could prove useful in future trials testing novel approaches to treat the coagulopathy associated with APL. : Abstract 948. Conductive and porous nitrogen-rich materials have great potential as supercapacitor electrode materials. The exceptional efficiency of such compounds, however, is dependent on their larger surface area and the level of nitrogen doping. To address these issues, we synthesized a porous covalent triazine framework (An-CTFs) based on 9,10-dicyanoanthracene (An-CN) units through an ionothermal reaction in the presence of different molar ratios of molten zinc chloride (ZnCl2) at 400 and 500 °C, yielding An-CTF-10-400, An-CTF-20-400, An-CTF-10-500, and An-CTF-20-500 microporous materials. According to N2 adsorption–desorption analyses (BET), these An-CTFs produced exceptionally high specific surface areas ranging from 406–751 m2·g−1. Furthermore, An-CTF-10-500 had a capacitance of 589 F·g−1, remarkable cycle stability up to 5000 cycles, up to 95% capacity retention, and strong CO2 adsorption capacity up to 5.65 mmol·g−1 at 273 K. As a result, our An-CTFs are a good alternative for both electrochemical energy storage and CO2 uptake.

AbstractThe new mineral novograblenovite, (NH4,K)MgCl3·6H2O, was found on basaltic lava from the 2012–2013 Tolbachik fissure eruption at the Plosky Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. It occurs as prismatic, needle-like transparent crystals together with gypsum and halite. Novograblenovite was formed due to the exposure of the host rocks to eruptive gas exhalations enriched in HCl and NH3. Basalt was the source of potassium and magnesium for the mineral formation. Novograblenovite crystallises in the monoclinic space group C2/c, with unit-cell parameters a = 9.2734(3) Å, b = 9.5176(3) Å, c = 13.2439(4) Å, β = 90.187(2)°, V = 1168.91(2) Å3 and Z = 4. The five strongest reflections in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [dobs, Å (I, %) (h k l)] are: 3.330 (100) (2 2 0), 2.976 (45) ($\bar{1}\; 1\; 4$), 2.353 (29) ($\bar {2}\; 2\; 4$), 3.825 (26) (2 0 2), 1.997 (25) ($\overline {4\; 2} $ 2). The density calculated from the empirical formula and the X-ray data is 1.504 g cm–3. The mineral is biaxial (+) with α = 1.469(2), β = 1.479(2) and γ = 1.496(2) (λ = 589 nm); 2Vmeas. = 80(10)° and 2Vcalc. = 75.7°. The crystal structure (solved and refined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, R1 = 0.0423) is based on the perovskite-like network of (NH4,K)Cl6-octahedra sharing chlorine vertices, and comprises [Mg(H2O)6]2+ groups in framework channels. The positions of all independent H atoms were obtained by difference-Fourier techniques and refined isotropically. All oxygen, nitrogen and chlorine atoms are involved in the system of hydrogen bonding, acting as donors or acceptors. The formula resulting from the structure refinement is [(NH4)0.7K0.3]MgCl3·6H2O. The mineral is named after Prokopiy Trifonovich Novograblenov, one of the researchers of Kamchatka Peninsula, a teacher, naturalist, geographer and geologist.

To understand the distribution and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of pathogens in respiratory samples in Changle District People’s Hospital in Fujian Province in recent years, and provide empirical guidance for infection control and clinical treatment in the region. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 5137 isolates of pathogens from respiratory samples collected from 2019 to 2022. The AMR patterns were systematically analyzed. For research purposes, the data was accessed on October 12, 2023. A total of 3517 isolates were included in the study, including 811 (23.06%) gram-positive bacteria and 2706 (76.94%) gram-negative bacteria. The top 3 gram-positive bacteria were Staphylococcus aureus with 455 isolates (12.94%), Streptococcus pneumoniae with 99 isolates (2.81%), and Staphylococcus hemolytic with 99 isolates (2.81%). The top 3 gram-negative bacteria were Klebsiella pneumoniae with 815 isolates (23.17%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa with 589 isolates (16.75%), and Acinetobacter baumannii with 328 isolates (9.33%). The proportion of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli and K pneumoniae fluctuated between 41.9% and 70.5%, and 18.6% and 20.9%, respectively. The resistance rates of E coli, K pneumoniae, P aeruginosa, and A baumannii to carbapenems were 2.36%, 8.9%, 18.5%, and 19.6%, respectively. The prevalence of methicillin-resistant S aureus (MRSA) was 48.55%, but it decreased to 38.4% by 2022. The resistance rate of Staphylococcus haemolyticus to methicillin was 100%, and 1 case of vancomycin-resistant strain was detected. K pneumoniae, P aeruginosa, A baumannii, and S aureus are the main pathogens in respiratory samples. Although the resistance rates of some multidrug-resistant strains have decreased, ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae, carbapenem-resistant bacteria have still increased. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the monitoring of pathogen resistance, promote rational use of antibiotics, and promptly report findings.

The aim of present investigation is to study the effects of sugar mill effluent fertigation on soil properties and agronomical characteristics of Maize (Zea mays L. cv. NMH 589) in two seasons. Six treatments of sugar mill effluent, namely, 0% (control), 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%, were used for the cultivation of Z. mays. Fertigation with different concentrations of sugar mill effluent resulted in significant (P<0.01) changes in EC, pH, OC, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, TKN, PO43-, SO42-, Fe3+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Mn2+, and Cr3+ of the soil in both seasons. The maximum agronomic performance of Z. mays was noted with 40% concentration of sugar mill effluent. Biochemical components like crude proteins, crude fiber, and total carbohydrates were recorded highest with 40% concentration of sugar mill effluent in both seasons. The contamination factor (Cf) of various heavy metals was observed in order of Mn2+>Zn2+>Cu2+>Cd2+>Cr3+ for soil and Mn2+>Zn2+>Cu2+>Cr3+>Cd2+ for Z. mays in both seasons after fertigation with sugar mill effluent. It appears that sugar mill effluent can be used as a biofertigant after appropriate dilution to improve the yield.

We have examined the fate of Golgi membranes during mitotic inheritance in animal cells using four-dimensional fluorescence microscopy, serial section reconstruction of electron micrographs, and peroxidase cytochemistry to track the fate of a Golgi enzyme fused to horseradish peroxidase. All three approaches show that partitioning of Golgi membranes is mediated by Golgi clusters that persist throughout mitosis, together with shed vesicles that are often found associated with spindle microtubules. We have been unable to find evidence that Golgi membranes fuse during the later phases of mitosis with the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) as a strategy for Golgi partitioning (Zaal, K.J., C.L. Smith, R.S. Polishchuk, N. Altan, N.B. Cole, J. Ellenberg, K. Hirschberg, J.F. Presley, T.H. Roberts, E. Siggia, et al. 1999. Cell. 99:589–601) and suggest that these results, in part, are the consequence of slow or abortive folding of GFP–Golgi chimeras in the ER. Furthermore, we show that accurate partitioning is accomplished early in mitosis, by a process of cytoplasmic redistribution of Golgi fragments and vesicles yielding a balance of Golgi membranes on either side of the metaphase plate before cell division.

Presenilin 1 (PS1) interacts with telencephalin (TLN) and the amyloid precursor protein via their transmembrane domain (Annaert, W.G., C. Esselens, V. Baert, C. Boeve, G. Snellings, P. Cupers, K. Craessaerts, and B. De Strooper. 2001. Neuron. 32:579–589). Here, we demonstrate that TLN is not a substrate for γ-secretase cleavage, but displays a prolonged half-life in PS1−/− hippocampal neurons. TLN accumulates in intracellular structures bearing characteristics of autophagic vacuoles including the presence of Apg12p and LC3. Importantly, the TLN accumulations are suppressed by adenoviral expression of wild-type, FAD-linked and D257A mutant PS1, indicating that this phenotype is independent from γ-secretase activity. Cathepsin D deficiency also results in the localization of TLN to autophagic vacuoles. TLN mediates the uptake of microbeads concomitant with actin and PIP2 recruitment, indicating a phagocytic origin of TLN accumulations. Absence of endosomal/lysosomal proteins suggests that the TLN-positive vacuoles fail to fuse with endosomes/lysosomes, preventing their acidification and further degradation. Collectively, PS1 deficiency affects in a γ-secretase–independent fashion the turnover of TLN through autophagic vacuoles, most likely by an impaired capability to fuse with lysosomes.

Feeding subtherapeutic antimicrobials to low-risk cattle does not confer consistent performance benefits. Can. J. Anim. Sci. 95: 589–597. Two-hundred and forty steers were obtained from the same ranch in each of 2 yr. Growth performance, health status and carcass characteristics from steers fed subtherapeutic antimicrobials were compared with those of control steers without antimicrobial metaphylaxis. Experimental groups included Control, not fed antimicrobials; CTCS-700, fed 350 mg head−1 d−1 chlortetracycline (CTC) and 350 mg head−1 d−1 sulfamethazine; CTC-11, fed 11 mg kg−1 CTC; TYL, fed 11 mg kg−1 tylosin phosphate; and CTC-350, fed 350 mg head−1 d−1 CTC. Steers were housed in pens of 10 steers and fed antimicrobials during both backgrounding and finishing periods. The incidence of bovine respiratory disease, pinkeye and bloat did not differ among experimental groups, although the incidence of foot rot was lower in Control steers (P<0.05) than in steers receiving TYL. In both years of the study, overall performance (backgrounding+finishing) was not improved by subtherapeutic antimicrobials. Similarly, carcass characteristics and the incidence and severity of liver abscesses were not improved compared with Control steers by feeding subtherapeutic antimicrobials. The results of the present study demonstrate that low-risk steers may be managed in small pens with equivalent growth performance, carcass characteristics and health status to steers fed subtherapeutic antimicrobials.

Abstract Fluorapophyllite-(Cs) (IMA 2018-108a), ideally CsCa4(Si8O20)F(H2O)8, is an apophyllite-group mineral from the moraine of the Darai-Pioz glacier, Tien-Shan, Northern Tajikistan. Associated minerals are quartz, pectolite, baratovite, aegirine, leucosphenite, pyrochlore, neptunite, fluorapophyllite-(K), and reedmergnerite. Fluorapophyllite-(Cs) is a hydrothermal mineral. It is colorless and has a vitreous luster and a white streak. Cleavage is perfect; it is brittle and has a stepped fracture. Mohs hardness is 4.5–5. Dmeas. = 2.54(2) g/cm3, Dcalc. = 2.513 g/cm3. Fluorapophyllite-(Cs) is unixial (+) with refractive indices (λ = 589 nm) ω = 1.540(2), ε = 1.544(2). It is non-pleochroic. Chemical analysis by electron microprobe gave SiO2 48.78, Al2O3 0.05, CaO 22.69, Cs2O 10.71, K2O 1.13, Na2O 0.04, F 1.86, H2Ocalc. 14.61, –O=F2 –0.78, sum 99.09 wt.%; H2O was calculated from crystal-structure analysis. The empirical formula based on 29 (O + F) apfu, H2O = 8 pfu, is (Cs0.75K0.24)Σ0.99(Ca3.99Na0.01)Σ4(Si8.01Al0.01)Σ8.02O20.03F0.97(H2O)8, Z = 2. The simplified formula is (Cs,K)(Ca,Na)4(Si,Al)8O20F(H2O)8. Fluorapophyllite-(Cs) is tetragonal, space group P4/mnc, a 9.060(6), c 15.741(11) Å, V 1292.10(19) Å3. The crystal structure has been refined to R1 = 4.31% based on 498 unique (Fo > 4σF) reflections. In the crystal structure of fluorapophyllite-(Cs), there is one [4]T site occupied solely by Si, <T–O> = 1.615 Å. SiO4 tetrahedra link to form a (Si8O20)8– sheet perpendicular to [001]. Between the Si–O sheets, there are two cation sites: A and B. The A site is coordinated by eight H2O groups [O(4) site], A–O(4) = 3.152(4) Å; the A site contains Cs0.75K0.24□0.01, ideally Cs apfu. The Cs–O bond length of 3.152 Å is definitely larger than the K–O bond length of 2.966–2.971 Å in fluorapophyllite-(K), KCa4(Si8O20)F(H2O)8. The [7]B site contains Ca3.99Na0.01, ideally Ca4apfu; <B–φ> = 2.417 Å (φ = O, F, H2O). The Si–O sheets connect via A and B polyhedra and hydrogen bonding; two H atoms have been included in the refinement. Fluorapophyllite-(Cs) is isostructural with fluorapophyllite-(K). Fluorapophyllite-(Cs) is a Cs-analogue of fluorapophyllite-(K).

The aim of the research was to determine features of the elemental composition of polyfloral honey from the Odessa region (Ukraine) by the method of x-ray fluorescence for using these features in the geographic marking of the region of honey origin. A choice of honey from the Odessa region is explained by its relatively good ecology, optimal maritime climate and enough motley grass resources for gathering nectar by bees. At the same time the Odessa region occupies the fourth place among regions – honey producers in Ukraine with a right to export honey beyond the country with specific weight 10 % from the total export of this product. 11 samples of fresh honey and 14 samples of honey, stored during one year were studied as to the content of 22 mineral elements. The elemental analysis of honey was realized on the energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescent spectrometer ElvaX Light SDD. Each sample was studied for 5 times. The obtained results were statistically processed by the standard methodology. The determination distinctness of mass shares of metals is no worse than 0,1 %. Limits of finding admixtures of heavy metals in the light matrix are no worse than 1 ppm. The studies were realized during 2016-2017. It has been established, that lyophilization of honey doesn’t essentially influence determination parameters of the elemental composition of honey by the method of x-ray fluorescence. The analysis of energy-dispersive spectrums of mineral elements determined that marker elements for honey from the Odessa region are Cl, K, Ca, that prevail among other studied mineral elements. There has been established the typical intensity of a signal of energy-dispersive spectrums for Cl, K, Ca of honey from the Odessa region that correspond to the following values: for fresh honey Cl from 27075 to 29429; K from 47 296 to 41 546; Ca from 7572 to 6928; for honey, stored during one year: Cl from 40383 to 37044; K from 43 589 to 42 591;Ca from 15495 to 10006. These parameters may serve as markers for honey from the Odessa region. At the same time the obtained results may be used for controlling the quality of natural honey by its element composition for identifying a geographic place of origin.

The emergence of high antimicrobial-resistant and hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) clones in clinics has become a cause of concern in recent years. Despite the global spread of the clonal complex (CC) 258, hvKp of other non-CC258 subgroups also emerged. Here, by performing a retrospective study from July 2019 to August 2020 in a Chinese hospital, we obtained 25 K. pneumoniae isolates belonging to CC15. By antimicrobial susceptibility testing and whole genome sequencing and analysis, we obtained the resistant phenotypes and genotypes of these isolates. Twenty-one isolates (84%) were carbapenem-resistant, and eighteen were blaKPC-2 positive. In addition, ten isolates were identified as putative hvKp and seven were carbapenem-resistant hvKp. Nine isolates carried the pLVPK-like virulence plasmid, which contains the fragment including rmpA2, peg-589, iutA, and iucABCD. Another isolate carried iucA. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the isolates belonged to four lineages, and the putative hvKp isolates were identified in three of these. Two independent sublineages of putative hvKp were caused by the acquisition of pLVPK-like virulence plasmid. Based on comparative genomic analysis, the number of pairwise single nucleotide polymorphisms amongst the four sublineages, Lineage 1a, 1b, 2a, and 2b, were 1–43, 2–13, 129–279, and 3–4, respectively, indicating clonal transmission of Lineage 1a, 1b, and 2b. These results indicate that multiple lineages of CC15 carbapenem-resistant hvKp have emerged in the hospital and caused nosocomial transmission, and that the spreading of virulence plasmids among classic K. pneumoniae subtypes might become more common and happen more easily. These findings highlight the importance of surveillance of local epidemics of non-CC258 subgroups in hospitals.

Four granitic plutons from the easternmost portion of the São Roque Domain (SRD) were dated by U-Pb zircon SHRIMP; the results indicate that the peak of granitic magmatism was concentrated in a short interval (606–589 Ma), the same as in the central portion of the SRD. The two porphyritic biotite granites (Morro Azul and Imbiruçu) yield the oldest ages (respectively, 601.0 ± 4.9 Ma and 606.3 ± 4.8 Ma) and have inherited zircons with similar ages (~2.1–2.0 Ga), but are not comagmatic. The Morro Azul granite has geochemical signature similar to other high-K calc-alkaline (HKCA) granites from the SRD, while the Imbiruçu granite has much higher Sr/Zr and other chemical features that demand different sources. Other two dated samples are very different from each other and from the HKCA granites. The age of the Morro do Pão tonalite (589.1 ± 5.5 Ma) indicates that, in spite of its more deformed character, it is younger; a similar value, although with large uncertainty, is shown by the Serra dos Índios peraluminous leucogranite (593 ± 12 Ma). Our analytic data combined with field relationships suggest that soon after the main episode of HKCA magmatism, the SRD witnessed the emplacement of granites of varied composition forming small bodies that recorded deformation associated with transcurrent tectonics.

Abstract A well-preserved volcaniclastic sequence crops out in Pleistocene marine sediments along the Tyrrhenian coastline of the Calabrian-Peloritani arc (Sicily, Italy), testifying the occurrence of Lower-Middle Pleistocene volcanic activity in Southern Tyrrhenian Sea. The presence of dominant highly vesicular and minor blocky glassy particles indicates that the volcanic clasts were originated by explosive events related to the ascent and violent emission of volatile-rich magmas accompanied by and/or alternated with hydromagmatic fragmentation due to magma-sea water interaction. Field investigations and sedimentological features of the studied volcaniclastic units suggest a deposition from sediment-water density flows. The chemical classification of the pumice clasts indicates prevalent rhyolitic and dacitic compositions with calc-alkaline to high-K calc-alkaline affinity. The geochemical features of immobile trace elements together with the presence of orthopyroxene are indicative of a provenance from an arc-type environment. The age (from 980-910 to 589 ka), the chemical composition and the evidence of subaerial explosive volcanic activity constrain the origin nature and temporal evolution of the arc-type volcanism in the Southern Tyrrhenian domain. Finally, the new information here provided contribute to a better understanding of the temporal geodynamic evolution of this sector of the Mediterranean domain.

BackgroundSome maternal systemic connective tissue diseases (CTD) and their associated antibodies are linked with adverse fetal outcomes, including increased risk of congenital heart diseases (CHD)[1,2]. Whether this increased risk also applies to less severe structural or functional cardiac abnormalities in the fetus is currently unknown.ObjectivesBased on a large cohort of newborns born to mothers with CTD, we aim to assess the association between maternal CTD and structural or functional cardiac abnormalities in the offspring. Data used in the study will be a combination of data collected in the Copenhagen Baby Heart Study (CBHS) and data collected via medical chart review to validate the CTD diagnosis and to obtain information about disease severity, treatment, etc.MethodsIn the CBHS we included more than 25,000 newborns between April 2016 and October 2018. All participants underwent systematic transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) within the first 60 days after birth[3,4].The present study will include newborns from the CBHS born to mothers diagnosed with CTD, as identified through the Danish national health registries. Assuming an overall incidence of CTDs at 2% we expect to include approximately 500 newborns to mothers with CTD. Newborns born to mothers diagnosed with CTD will be matched 1:1 to newborns not exposed to maternal CTD, based on child sex; gestational age at birth; age and weight at time of TTE; and maternal age at delivery. Maternal medical charts will be reviewed to validate the CTD diagnosis and obtain information about disease severity, treatment, etc. The primary endpoint is a composite of functional and structural abnormalities in the heart of the newborns, assessed by echocardiography, including left ventricular structural and functional abnormalities, septum defects, and valve anomalies.ResultsPreliminary results are expected in spring 2023.ConclusionIt is unclear whether children of mothers with CTD should have routine cardiac evaluation at birth, and whether certain types of maternal CTD have a higher risk of minor/subclinical CHD or less severe cardiac abnormalities in the offspring compared with children born to mothers without CTD. The size of CBHS and the comprehensive assessment of the included children provide a unique opportunity for obtaining new knowledge in this field, including better insights into whether routine TTE after birth should be considered in certain subgroups.References[1]Mecacci, F.; Pieralli, A.; Bianchi, B.; Paidas, M. In this paper dynamics characteristics of nanocomposite on the basis of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) with magnetite dopant introduced into porous structures are studied. We studied the behavior of spectral characteristics of transmittance of CLC2103L with Fe3O4 introduced in porous structures of Al2O3 under carbon monoxide influence. The diameter pores of Al2O3 is 20 nm, 35 nm and 50 nm, and CO concentration is in the range of 0-100 mg/m3. Interaction of investigated nanocomposite is the most intensive in the first minutes of CO influence. Further increase of interaction time does not lead to changes in the structure of the CLC. AbstractBavsiite from the type locality Gun Claim, Yukon Territory, Canada, occurs as millimetre-sized sky-blue platy crystals in a barium-rich low-temperature skarn related to a porphyritic quartz monzonite stock. Associated minerals are alstonite, baryte, celsian, diopside, fresnoite, mica, suzukiite, walstromite, witherite and minerals of the cerchiaraite group. Bavsiite is optical uniaxial (+), with ω = 1.725(3) and ε = 1.750(3) (589 nm) and pleochroic. Electron microprobe analyses yielded the empirical formula Na0.02Ba1.98Ti0.16Fe2+0.03V4+1.80 Al0.05Si4.00O14 based on 14 oxygen atoms, the simplified chemical formula is Ba2V2Si4O14. Bavsiite is tetragonal, space group I4/m, a = 7.043(1), c = 11.444(2) Å and Z = 2 obtained from single crystal data at 100 K, which are in good agreement with cell parameters from powder diffraction data at 293 K: a = 7.051(1) Å and c = 11.470(1) Å. The eight strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [d, Å (I,%)(hkl)]: 3.76(30)(112), 3.36(44)(013), 3.004(100)(022), 2.493(43)(220), 2.486(67)(114), 2.286(24)(222), 1.785(39)(116) and 1.763(25)(040). The crystal structure was refined to R = 0.0159 based upon 312 unique reflections with I > 2σ(I). The crystal structure of bavsiite comprises unbranched single [Si4O12]8– rings connected by [VO5]6– square pyramids and BaO12 polyhedra. It can also be considered as cage–like [Si4V2O18]12– clusters built by four SiO4 tetrahedra and two VO5 square pyramids. These clusters are cross–linked to form a pseudo-two-dimensional network (2D) parallel to (001) containing empty channels along the a axis and the 2D networks held together by Ba2+ ions located in channels parallel to the c axis. The structural formula is Ba2V2O2[Si4O12]. Bavsiite is polymorphic to suzukiite, BaVSi2O7, which is orthorhombic.

AbstractAmmoniovoltaite, (NH4)2Fe2+5Fe3+3Al(SO4)12(H2O)18, is a new voltaite-group mineral. The mineral was discovered at the Severo-Kambalny (North-Kambalny) geothermal field, Kambalny volcanic ridge, Southern Kamchatka, Russia. Ammoniovoltaite forms at ~100°C around geothermal gas/steam vents in association with alunogen, tschermigite and pyrite. Crystals of ammoniovoltaite have euhedral habit, are up to 50 µm in size and grow on alunogen plates. Ammoniovoltaite is black with vitreous lustre, opaque, brittle and water-soluble. Neither cleavage nor parting is found, the fracture is conchoidal. The mineral is isotropic, with the refractive index n = 1.602(2) (589 nm). Infrared spectra contain an absorption band at 1433 cm–1 distinctive for the ammonium ion. The chemical composition is (iron content is given in accordance with Mössbauer data, H2O calculated from a crystal-structure refinement, wt.%): FeO 13.26, Fe2O3 11.58, MgO 2.33, ZnO 0.04, Al2O3 2.74, SO3 47.46, K2O 0.19, CaO 0.11, (NH4)2O 2.96, H2O 16.03, total 96.70. The empirical formula based on S = 12 atoms per formula unit is [(NH4)1.88K0.08Ca0.04]Σ2.00(Fe2+3.74Mg1.17Fe3+0.05Zn0.01)Σ4.97(Fe3+2.89Al0.09)Σ2.98Al1.00(SO4)12.00(H2O)18.00. The crystal structure has been refined to R1 = 0.031 and 0.030 on the basis of 1217 and 1462 unique reflections with I >2σ(I) collected at 100 K and room temperature, respectively. Ammoniovoltaite is the ammonium analogue of voltaite. The mineral is cubic, Fd$\bar{3}$c, a = 27.250(1) Å and V = 20234(3) Å3 (at 100 K); and a = 27.322(1) Å and V = 20396(3) Å3 (at RT), with Z = 16. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I, %) (hkl)] are: 9.67 (74) (022), 7.90 (56) (222), 5.58 (84) (422), 3.560 (100) (731), 3.418 (100) (008) and 2.8660 (37) (931). A brief review of ammonium minerals from various volcanically active geological environments is given.

589 Background: Neoadjuvant radio/chemoradiotherapy (CRT) is a treatment milestone for LARC. The importance of immune response in CRT efficacy is increasingly realised. However immune cell changes associated with poor responders and their modulation with immune-CRT combinations is unclear. Methods: Matched archival pre-CRT biopsies and post-CRT resection specimens from patients (pts) treated with neoadjuvant CRT were retrieved. Delta-TCD (tumor cell density, estimated using quantitative point counting on virtual tissue H&E) and k-means clustering method were used to classify pts into good, intermediate and poor responders. Baseline expression and CRT-induced changes in 770 immune-related genes (plus 30 DNA damage response genes) were evaluated using NanoString Technologies. Results: At least 70 pts treated with short/long course radiotherapy (SCRT/LCRT) and matched tissues available were identified. To date, 27 pts evaluable for deltaTCD and gene expression were clustered into good (n:10), intermediate (n:7) and poor (n:10) responders. The expression of 14% (91/636) of immune genes was significantly affected by CRT (Bonferroni t-test, q-value < 0.05) overall, with significant increase in innate immunity and decrease in adaptive immunity across all pts (CIBERSORT and SSGSEA analyses). Between good and poor responders there were 6% (39/636) and 2% (15/636) of genes significantly affected by CRT (Bonferroni t-test, q-value < 0.05), respectively. CRT-induced increased CD8+ T cells expression in poor responders compared to good responders was seen. Increased baseline expression of resistance genes (including PD-L1, IDO1 and IL2RA) were seen in poor versus good responders. Validation with quantitative multiplex-immunofluorescence (Vectra) and correlation with SCRT/LCRT and time to surgery are on-going. Conclusions: The expression of immune-related genes is significantly modified by CRT in LARC. With the caveat of small numbers, we identified differentially expressed immune targets at baseline which may justify immune-CRT combinations in neoadjuvant setting in selected pts to modulate the CRT effect and ultimately increase response.

ABSTRACTThe new mineral wrightite, K2Al2O(AsO4)2, was found in 1983 at a fumarole on the Second scoria cone, Northern Breakthrough, Great Fissure eruption, Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka peninsula, Russia, where it occurs as light yellow aggregates of transparent tabular crystals, with an average size of 0.05 mm × 0.03 mm × 0.005 mm. Wrightite is orthorhombic, space group Pnma, with the unit-cell parameters a = 8.230(5), b = 5.555(4), c = 17.584(1) Å, V = 803.9(6) Å3 and Z = 4 (from powder data). The empirical formula is (K1.69Na0.38)Σ2.07(Al1.80Fe0.24)Σ2.04As1.96O9. The crystal structure (R1 = 0.043) consists of Al2O(AsO4)2 layers in the ab plane with clusters of edge-sharing AlO6 octahedra. Each layer contains two independent isolated AsO4 tetrahedra and two AlO6 octahedra. AlO6 octahedra are linked by edges, forming zigzag chains along the b axis inside the Al–As layer. Eight- and six-coordinated K atoms are located in the interlayer space between Al2O(AsO4)2 layers. The mineral is biaxial (−), α =1.679(2), β =1.685(2), γ (calc.) =1.687; 2V(meas.) = 62(10)° (λ = 589 nm). The strongest lines in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d,Å(I)(hkl)] are: 8.77(36)(002); 4.458(17)(111); 4.010(19)(201,013); 3.875(19)(104) and 2.972(100)(015). The mineral was named in honour of Adrian Carl Wright, Emeritus Professor at the University of Reading, UK.

Results are presented for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) as a method for measuring salt concentrations in seawater aerosol droplets. An excimer laser, operating at high pulse energy with KrF gas (λ = 248 nm) produces laser-induced breakdown plasmas in an aerosol spray. Emission lines of Na and H are monitored with an optical multichannel analyzer to characterize the plasma spatially and temporally. Studies of temporally resolved atomic line emissions from the plasma determine the optimum time for gating of the detector to be 2–4 μs after the excimer laser pulse arrives in the probe volume. Spatially resolved measurements of atomic emission line intensities are studied by positioning a stream of monodisperse droplets at various locations relative to the measurement probe volume. The electron temperature of the plasma is estimated to be 12,600 ± 4600 K, averaged over 1700 measurements during a 100-ns interval 2 μs after breakdown. Calibration curves are presented relating the Na(I) 589-nm to Hα 656.3-nm intensity ratio as a function of Na concentration, ranging from 100 to 10,000 ppm. Limits of detection for Na by the current method under the experimental conditions are estimated to be approximately 165 ppm for monodisperse sprays and 925 ppm for one case involving a polydisperse spray. Droplet diameter strongly influences the observed emission intensity ratio.

Rippite K2(Nb,Ti)2(Si4O12)(O,F)2, a new K-Nb-cyclosilicate, has been discovered in calciocarbonatites from the Chuktukon massif (Chadobets upland, SW Siberian Platform, Krasnoyarsk Territory, Russia). It was found in a primary mineral assemblage, which also includes calcite, fluorcalciopyrochlore, tainiolite, fluorapatite, fluorite, Nb-rich rutile, olekminskite, K-feldspar, Fe-Mn–dolomite and quartz. Goethite, francolite (Sr-rich carbonate–fluorapatite) and psilomelane (romanèchite ± hollandite) aggregates as well as barite, monazite-(Ce), parisite-(Ce), synchysite-(Ce) and Sr-Ba-Pb-rich keno-/hydropyrochlore are related to a stage of metasomatic (hydrothermal) alteration of carbonatites. The calcite–dolomite coexistence assumes crystallization temperature near 837 °C for the primary carbonatite paragenesis. Rippite is tetragonal: P4bm, a = 8.73885(16), c = 8.1277(2) Å, V = 620.69(2) Å3, Z = 2. It is closely identical in the structure and cell parameters to synthetic K2Nb2(Si4O12)O2 (or KNbSi2O7). Similar to synthetic phase, the mineral has nonlinear properties. Some optical and physical properties for rippite are: colorless; Mohs’ hardness—4–5; cleavage—(001) very perfect, (100) perfect to distinct; density (meas.)—3.17(2) g/cm3; density (calc.)—3.198 g/cm3; optically uniaxial (+); ω = 1.737-1.739; ε = 1.747 (589 nm). The empirical formula of the holotype rippite (mean of 120 analyses) is K2(Nb1.90Ti0.09Zr0.01)[Si4O12](O1.78OH0.12F0.10). Majority of rippite prismatic crystals are weakly zoned and show Ti-poor composition K2(Nb1.93Ti0.05Zr0.02)[Si4O12](O1.93F0.07). Raman and IR spectroscopy, and SIMS data indicate very low H2O content (0.09–0.23 wt %). Some grains may contain an outermost zone, which is enriched in Ti (+Zr) and F, up to K2(Nb1.67Ti0.32Zr0.01)[Si4O12](O1.67F0.33). It strongly suggests the incorporation of (Ti,Zr) and F in the structure of rippite via the isomorphism Nb5+ + O2− → (Ti,Zr)4+ + F1−. The content of a hypothetical end-member K2Ti2[Si4O12]F2 may be up to 17 mol. %. Rippite represents a new structural type among [Si4O12]-cyclosilicates because of specific type of connection of the octahedral chains and [Si4O12]8− rings. In structural and chemical aspects it seems to be in close with the labuntsovite-supergroup minerals, namely with vuoriyarvite-(K), K2(Nb,Ti)2(Si4O12)(O,OH)2∙4H2O.

Ewsr1 encodes a protein that acts as a multifunctional molecule in a variety of cellular processes. The full-length of Cs-ewsr1-w and Cs-ewsr1-z were cloned in Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis). The open reading frame (ORF) of Cs-ewsr1-w was 1,767 bp that encoded 589 amino acids, while Cs-ewsr1-z was 1,794 bp that encoded 598 amino acids. Real-time PCR assays showed that Cs-ewsr1-w exhibited significant female-biased expression and could be hardly detected in male. It has the most abundant expression in ovaries among eight healthy tissues. Its expression in ovary increased gradually from 90 d to 3 y with C. semilaevis ovarian development and reached the peak at 3 y. After Cs-ewsr1-w knockdown with siRNA interference, several genes related to gonadal development including foxl2, sox9b and pou5f1 were down-regulated in ovarian cell line, suggesting the possible participation of Cs-ewsr1-w in C. semilaevis ovarian development. The dual-luciferase reporter assay revealed that the -733/-154 bp Cs-ewsr1-w promoter fragment exhibited strong transcription activity human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293T cell line. The mutation of a MAF BZIP Transcription Factor K (Mafk) binding site located in this fragment suggested that transcription factor Mafk might play an important role in Cs-ewsr1-w basal transcription. Our results will provide clues on the gene expression level, transcriptional regulation and knock-down effect of ewsr1 gene during ovarian development in teleost.

AbstractThe new mineral aluminopyracmonite, ideally (NH4)3Al(SO4)3, was found in a medium-temperature (∼250°C) intracrater active fumarole at La Fossa crater, Vulcano, Aeolian Islands, Sicily, Italy. It occurs on a pyroclastic breccia as colourless to white prismatic crystals up to 0.2 mm long, in association with adranosite, mascagnite, alunite and salammoniac. The mineral is identical to the synthetic compound (NH4)3Al(SO4)3. It is trigonal, space group: R (no. 148) with a = 15.0324(8), c = 8.8776(5) 5, V = 1737.3(2) Å3 and Z = 6. The six strongest reflections in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are: [dobs in Å (I)(hkl)] 3.336(100)(131), 7.469(62)(1 1 0), 3.288(60)(122), 4.289(45)(31), 2.824(29)(51), 4.187(27) (012). The empirical formula based on 12 anions is [(NH4)2.89K0.10]Σ 2.99(Al1.18Fe0.01)Σ 1.19S2.91O12, and the simplified formula (NH4,K)3Al(SO4)3. The measured density is 2.12(1) g/cm3, calculated density 2.143 g/cm3. The mineral is uniaxial(–) with ω = 1.545(3) and ε = 1.532(3) (λ = 589 nm). Using single-crystal diffraction data, the structure was refined to a final R(F) = 0.0258 for 998 independent observed reflections [I > 2σ(I)]. In spite of having unitcell parameters comparable with those of pyracmonite, the two minerals are not isostructural; the difference is related to a disordered conformation of the sulfate anions about the two independent Al3+ ions in aluminopyracmonite.

AbstractLevantite, with the end-member formula KCa3(Al2Si3)O11(PO4), is the phosphate analogue of latiumite, KCa3(Al3Si2)O11(SO4, CO3) found in gehlenite–wollastonite hornfels on Har Parsa, Negev Desert, Israel. Levantite forms later zones on long-prismatic crystals of latiumite. Rarer homogeneous colourless levantite crystals up to 0.2 mm long and with mean composition (K0.94Ba0.01Na0.01□0.04)Σ1.00(Ca2.96Mg0.03)Σ2.99{(Si2.69Al2.06Fe3+0.16P0.06)Σ4.97O11}[(PO4)0.65(SO4)0.35]Σ1.00 were noted. Minerals of the levantite–latiumite series are associated with gehlenite, wollastonite, clinopyroxene of the esseneite–diopside series, anorthite and Ti-bearing andradite. Levantite crystalises in space group P21 with unit-cell parameters a = 12.1006(9) Å, b = 5.1103(4) Å, c = 10.8252(9) Å, β = 107.237(8)°, V = 639.34(9) Å3 and Z = 2. The structure of levantite is analogous to latiumite. It is formed by tetrahedral hybrid zweier double layers [(Si,Al)10O22] connected by Ca atoms. Three Ca atoms linked to different double layers are bridged over by (PO4) and minor (SO4) groups. K atoms reside in the cavities between two superimposed zweier double layers. The measured micro-indentation hardness of levantite gave VHN50 = 580(19) (mean of 14), range 550–611 kg/mm2, which correlates with 5 on the Mohs scale. Cleavage is good on (100). Twinning on (100) is polysynthetic or simple. The calculated density is 2.957 g cm–3. Levantite is optically negative with α = 1.608(2), β = 1.618(2), γ = 1.622(2) (λ = 589 nm), 2Vmeas. = 70(5)° and 2Vcalc. = 64.3°. Dispersion of the optical axes r > v is weak; the optical orientation is: Z = b, X ^ c = 22–27°; and it is non-pleochroic. Minerals of the levantite–latiumite series from Israel show characteristic Raman spectra with the main bands at 994 cm–1 [ν1(SO4)2–] and 945 cm–1 [ν1(PO4)3–]. The band intensity ν1(PO4)3–/ν1(SO4) ratio is well correlated with P and S contents in the investigated minerals. The strongest lines in the powder diffraction pattern [dobs, Å (I, %) (hkl)] are: 3.0762(100)(310), 2.8551(96)($\bar 2$13), 2.9704(92)($\bar 3$12), 2.8573(83)(013), 2.5552(66)(020), 2.8228(48)(212), 2.8893(40)(400), and 3.0634(30)(103).

Abstract. The direct radiative effect (DRE) during 20 intense and widespread dust outbreaks, which affected the broader Mediterranean basin over the period March 2000–February 2013, has been calculated with the NMMB-MONARCH model at regional (Sahara and European continent) and short-term temporal (84 h) scales. According to model simulations, the maximum dust aerosol optical depths (AODs) range from ∼ 2.5 to ∼ 5.5 among the identified cases. At midday, dust outbreaks locally induce a NET (shortwave plus longwave) strong atmospheric warming (DREATM values up to 285 W m−2; Niger–Chad; dust AODs up to ∼ 5.5) and a strong surface cooling (DRENETSURF values down to −337 W m−2), whereas they strongly reduce the downward radiation at the ground level (DRESURF values down to −589 W m−2 over the Eastern Mediterranean, for extremely high dust AODs, 4.5–5). During night-time, reverse effects of smaller magnitude are found. At the top of the atmosphere (TOA), positive (planetary warming) DREs up to 85 W m−2 are found over highly reflective surfaces (Niger–Chad; dust AODs up to ∼ 5.5) while negative (planetary cooling) DREs down to −184 W m−2 (Eastern Mediterranean; dust AODs 4.5–5) are computed over dark surfaces at noon. Dust outbreaks significantly affect the mean regional radiation budget, with NET DREs ranging from −8.5 to 0.5 W m−2, from −31.6 to 2.1 W m−2, from −22.2 to 2.2 W m−2 and from −1.7 to 20.4 W m−2 for TOA, SURF, NETSURF and ATM, respectively. Although the shortwave DREs are larger than the longwave ones, the latter are comparable or even larger at TOA, particularly over the Sahara at midday. As a response to the strong surface day-time cooling, dust outbreaks cause a reduction in the regional sensible and latent heat fluxes by up to 45 and 4 W m−2, respectively, averaged over land areas of the simulation domain. Dust outbreaks reduce the temperature at 2 m by up to 4 K during day-time, whereas a reverse tendency of similar magnitude is found during night-time. Depending on the vertical distribution of dust loads and time, mineral particles heat (cool) the atmosphere by up to 0.9 K (0.8 K) during day-time (night-time) within atmospheric dust layers. Beneath and above the dust clouds, mineral particles cool (warm) the atmosphere by up to 1.3 K (1.2 K) at noon (night-time). On a regional mean basis, negative feedbacks on the total emitted dust (reduced by 19.5 %) and dust AOD (reduced by 6.9 %) are found when dust interacts with the radiation. Through the consideration of dust radiative effects in numerical simulations, the model positive and negative biases for the downward surface SW or LW radiation, respectively, with respect to Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) measurements, are reduced. In addition, they also reduce the model near-surface (at 2 m) nocturnal cold biases by up to 0.5 K (regional averages), as well as the model warm biases at 950 and 700 hPa, where the dust concentration is maximized, by up to 0.4 K. However, improvements are relatively small and do not happen in all episodes because other model first-order errors may dominate over the expected improvements, and the misrepresentation of the dust plumes' spatiotemporal features and optical properties may even produce a double penalty effect. The enhancement of dust forecasts via data assimilation techniques may significantly improve the results.

The thoracic fraction of road dust (PM10) was measured for the first time in Portugal in parking areas, both outdoors and indoors, with the aim of completing existing studies carried out in active lanes of various roads. An in situ resuspension chamber was used to collect a total of 23 samples in three parking areas of Aveiro, whilst the laboratory procedures included determination of carbonaceous content (OC and EC) by a thermo-optical technique, elemental composition by ICP-MS and ICP-OES after acid digestion, and the Aliivribrio fisherii bioluminescent bacteria ecotoxicity bioassay. Dust loadings (DL10) obtained were 18.5 ± 9.8 mg PM10 m−2, in outdoor parking, and 1.8–23.7 mg PM10 m−2 for indoor parking, corresponding to emission factors of 476 and 75–589 mg veh−1 km−1, respectively. OC represented 9–30 % of PM10 for the indoor parking areas. However, for the outdoor samples, the high iron oxide content jeopardised the OC-EC separation. In those samples, carbonates accounted for 10.0 ± 3.3% of the PM10 mass. The analysis of elemental components focused on major elements (Al, Ca, Fe, K, and Mg) as well as minor elements. The total mass fraction of element oxides accounted for 27.1% (outdoor) and 23.6–34.3% (indoor). ΣPAH calculated for all parking areas accounted for 8.38–36.9 μg g−1 PM10. The ecotoxicological bioassay showed that all aqueous solutions were toxic to bioluminescent bacteria, whereas no clear correlations could be made with specific component groups, with the exception of ΣPAH and EC50.

Extracts of adenovirus-infected HeLa cells have 5- to 10-fold-higher activity for transcription from the major late promoter in vitro than do extracts of mock-infected or E1A mutant-infected cells (K. Leong and A. J. Berk, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 83:5844-5848, 1986). In this study, we analyzed extracts from mock-infected cells and from cells infected with an E1A mutant, pm975, which expresses principally the large E1A protein responsible for the stimulation of transcription. These extracts were fractionated by phosphocellulose chromatography, a procedure which separates factors required for transcription from this promoter (J. D. Dignam, B. S. Shastry, and R. G. Roeder, Methods Enzymol. 101:582-589, 1983), allowing the quantitative assay of individual factors (M. Samuels, A. Fire, and P. A. Sharp, J. Biol. Chem. 257:14419-14427, 1982). Fractions eluted with 0.04, 0.35, and 0.6 M KCl, which contained RNA polymerase II, the upstream factor MLTF, and three general polymerase II transcription factors, had similar activities when prepared from virus-infected or from mock-infected cells. The sequence-specific DNA-binding activity of MLTF was also similar in the virus-infected- and mock-infected-cell extracts. In contrast, the 1.0 M KCl fraction prepared from virus-infected cells consistently exhibited activity severalfold higher than that of the equivalent fraction prepared in parallel from mock-infected cells. E1A protein eluted principally (greater than 80%) in the 0.35 M KCl fraction. Results of others (M. Sawadogo and R. G. Roeder, Cell 43:165-175, 1985) have shown that the 1.0 M KCl fraction, containing 2 to 5% of the unfractionated protein extract, contains a factor which binds specifically to the major late promoter TATA box. These results, together with a recent genetic analysis of the E1B promoter which demonstrated that the TATA box was required for its efficient transcriptional activation (transactivation) by E1A (L. Wu, D. S. E. Rosser, M. Schmidt, and A. J. Berk, Nature (London) 326:512-515, 1987), are consistent with the model that E1A protein indirectly activates the TATA box transcription factor. Consistent with this model was the finding that mutants of the major late promoter containing only the TATA box and cap site region were transcribed at higher rates with extracts from virus-infected cells than with extracts from mock-infected cells. Other models consistent with the results are also discussed.
