AbstractObjectiveTo evaluate the accuracy of the most commonly used anthropometric-based equations in the estimation of percentage body fat (%BF) in both normal-weight and overweight women using air-displacement plethysmography (ADP) as the criterion measure.DesignA comparative study in which the equations of Durnin and Womersley (1974; DW) and Jackson, Pollock and Ward (1980) at three, four and seven sites (JPW3, JPW4 and JPW7) were validated against ADP in three groups. Group 1 included all participants, group 2 included participants with a BMI<25·0 kg/m2 and group 3 included participants with a BMI≥25·0 kg/m2.SettingHuman Performance Laboratory, Institute for Sport and Health, University College Dublin, Republic of Ireland.SubjectsForty-three female participants aged between 18 and 55 years.ResultsIn all three groups, the %BF values estimated from the DW equation were closer to the criterion measure (i.e. ADP) than those estimated from the other equations. Of the three JPW equations, JPW3 provided the most accurate estimation of %BF when compared with ADP in all three groups.ConclusionIn comparison to ADP, these findings suggest that the DW equation is the most accurate anthropometric method for the estimation of %BF in both normal-weight and overweight females.

This paper proposes the design of a precoder in MIMO systems dedicated to JPEG Wireless (JPWL) (ISO/IEC 15444-11) image transmission which jointly takes into account the channel noise and the nonlinear distortions due to the high power amplifier (HPA) used in the transmitter. MIMO-OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) systems dedicated to image transmission rely only on the Channel State Information (CSI) and the image content to design their precoding solutions. However, the nonlinear behavior of the HPA used at the front-end is not taken into account when designing the current precoders. In order to ensure the QoS of the transmitted image, a large level back-off is usually applied to avoid the nonlinear distortions generated by the HPA. In addition, the Input Back-off (IBO) value is statically chosen and does not depend on the other parameters of the link such as the instantaneous MIMO channel status, the modulation order and the scalability of the JPWL content. This may reduce both the global energy efficiency and the transmission quality of the Radio-Frequency (RF) link. Therefore, this work proposes a new precoding scheme to allocate the total available power while dynamically adjusting the optimal power IBO value according to the HPA parameters, the instantaneous channel status and the image content to be transmitted. Numerical results using a commercial HPA model under the IEEE 802.11n standard show that the proposed power allocation algorithm improves the visual quality of the received JPWL images compared to the state-of-the-art over a realistic radio channel model.

In many computer games up to hundreds of agents navigate in real-time across a dynamically changing weighted grid map. Pathfinding in these situations is challenging because the grids are large, traversal costs are not uniform, and because each shortest path has many symmetric permutations, all of which must be considered by an optimal online search. In this work we introduce Weighted Jump Point Search (JPSW), a new type of pathfinding algorithm which breaks weighted grid symmetries by introducing a tiebreaking policy that allows us to apply effective pruning rules in symmetric regions. We show that these pruning rules preserve at least one optimal path to every grid cell and that their application can yield large performance improvements for optimal pathfinding. We give a complete theoretical description of the new algorithm, including pseudo-code. We also conduct a wide-ranging experimental evaluation, including data from real games. Results indicate JPSW is up to orders of magnitude faster than the nearest baseline, online search using A*.

This paper examines the applicability of four failure criteria applied to layered rocks, namely, Pariseau’s model, linear empirical equation, nonlinear empirical equation (LEE and NLEE), and Jaeger’s plane-of-weakness model (JPW). A database comprising 282 uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests and 1,273 triaxial tests conducted worldwide on layered rocks is compiled. Pariseau’s model is classified as a continuous function, and LEE and NLEE, as well as JPW, are classified as piecewise functions. Nonlinear least squares and traversing methods are used to determine the global minima of the material coefficients in the two types of functions. The goodness of fit of these criteria for the database is evaluated. Two statistical parameters, namely, regression coefficient (R2) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) are used for precision assessment. The aforementioned methods and the criteria are further used for evaluating the surrounding rock stability of the eastern slope of Yanshan iron open-pit and the underground powerhouse of the Jinping I hydropower station. The results show that (1) Pariseau’s model is not suitable for layered rocks when n = 2, and the fit is worst in the condition of insufficient triaxial data when n = 1; (2) the MAPE of the empirical equation (LEE and NLEE) is within 20%, with the best predictive accuracy under medium to low confining pressures, and the MPAE of JPW is within 40%, with the best predictive accuracy under high confining pressures; and (3) calculation of the damage area of the slope and underground powerhouse and comparison with the actual damage on the site verify that the empirical equation has the best engineering prediction accuracy under medium to low confining pressure conditions.

In this thesis, we are interested on the performances optimization of multimedia transmissions systems with an original contribution combining RF circuits' imperfections presented by the power amplifier (PA) nonlinearities and the transmission channel distortions. The studied system uses the OFDM technique which is the most widespread multicarrier modulation in recent radio communications systems. However, its major drawback is the high PAPR value, which degrades the transmission quality due to the PA nonlinearities. To reduce the PAPR, we first propose to improve the TR method in terms of convergence speed and PAPR reduction, by studying several optimization algorithms. We show that the conjugate gradient algorithm provides the best performance while respecting the frequency specifica-tions of the IEEE 802.11a standard. Thereafter, TR method has been evaluated experimentally in the presence of a commercial PA (SZP-2026Z) and using a measurement bench. It is shown that the TR method improves the quality of service (QoS), with 18% reduction in PA power consumption. The experimental study has resulted to choosing a realistic PA model consider-ing memory effects. This PA model has been integrated into a SISO simulation chain includ-ing also a realistic channel model. This chain is used to evaluate the TR method performances under realistic transmission conditions. Finally, we propose to apply the TR method in a closed-loop MIMO-OFDM chain dedicated to the transmission of scalable multimedia con-tent in a realistic context with the IEEE 802.1n standard. This study presents a new contribu-tion of the TR method evaluation to improve the visual quality of the JPWL transmitted imag-es, considering in the same time the multimedia content, the PA nonlinearity and the channel transmission distortions

This thesis focuses on the optimization of multimedia transmissions in MIMO-OFDM systems by jointly taking into account the power amplifier non-linearity and the wireless channel distortions. The OFDM modulation generates a high peak fluctuation, measured by the PAPR, which is affected by the RF non-linearity such as the power amplifier, reducing the transmission quality. We first propose a new method to improve the Tone Reservation method performances in terms of PAPR reduction gain and convergence speed, by including the samples of the Guard Interval Signal in the optimization algorithm. Simulations results using a power amplifier model with memory effects and a radio channel based on a realistic propagation model show that the new method offers the better performances, while respecting the IEEE 802.11a spectrum mask. Secondly, we propose to study the impact of power amplifier nonlinearity on the transmission of scalable image contents over a precoded Closed-Loop MIMO-OFDM system. The simulations in a realistic context, under the standard IEEE 802.11n standard show that the RF non-linearity affects the robustness against transmission errors and highly degrades the visual quality of the received JPWL images. Finally, we propose a new precoding strategy which jointly takes into account the power amplifier, the radio channel and the image content to be transmitted. This strategy successively allocates power between the SISO sub-channels obtained from the MIMO channel decomposition in order to maximize the visual quality of the received images, while reducing the total output power. Simulations with a realistic power amplifier model, associated with a realistic channel model show that this new strategy ensures a robust transmission and improves the visual quality of the received images

This work is devoted to improve the coding/ decoding performance of a transmission scheme over noisy and realistic channels. For this purpose, we propose the development of optimized image transmission methods by focusing on both application and physical layers of wireless networks. In order to ensure a better quality of services, efficient compression algorithms (JPEG2000 and JPWL) are used in terms of the application layer enabling the receiver to reconstruct the images with maximum fidelity. Furthermore, to insure a transmission on wireless channels with a minimum BER at reception, some transmission, coding and advanced modulation techniques are used in the physical layer (MIMO-OFDM system, adaptive modulation, FEC, etc). First, we propose a robust transmission system of JPWL encoded images integrating a joint source-channel decoding scheme based on soft input decoding techniques. Next, the optimization of an image transmission scheme on a realistic MIMO-OFDM channel is considered. The optimized image transmission strategy is based on soft input decoding techniques and a link adaptation approach. The proposed transmission scheme offers the possibility of jointly implementing, UEP, UPA, adaptive modulation, adaptive source coding and joint decoding strategies, in order to improve the image visual quality at the reception. Then, we propose a robust transmission system for embedded bit streams based on concatenated block coding mechanism offering an unequal error protection strategy. Thus, the novelty of this study consists in proposing efficient solutions for the global optimization of wireless communication system to improve transmission quality
