Several of the manuscripts from Tunhuang in the invaluable Choix de Documents Tibétains conservés à la Bibliothèque Nationale (Paris, 1978 and 1979) record cases of civil litigation and administrative or judicial decisions on them in some instances. Fewer deal with criminal matters. Although students of Tibetan have referred to such documents in books and articles, published translations of any of them appear to be rare. In Journal Asiatique, 1955, Mlle Marcelle Lalou, a pioneer in studies of the Tunhuang material, translated Fonds Pelliot Tibétain (Pell. T.) 1089 concerning the appointment of a wide range of officials in the border region. The translation of orders on two short petitions from citizens of Shacu is included in Tsipon Shakabpa's Tibet, a Political History (1967). F. W. Thomas translated the “Law of theft in Chinese Kansu, a IXth–Xth century fragment from Tunhuang”, in Zeitschrift für Verglekhende Rechtswissenschaft, L (1936).

Disputes about the content and authenticity of the Georgian inscription left on the wall of the Nuzal Chapel in the Alagir Gorge in North Ossetia and allegedly hinted at the burial here of the second husband and co-ruler of Queen Tamar, Ossetian David Soslan, began with its first publication in 1830 by a member of the Asian Scientific Society M.-F. Brosset in the “Journal Asiatique”. These disputes have not stopped to this day; none of those who left descriptions of the chapel have seen the inscription. In Brosset's publication of 1830, the Nuzal inscription concerned only the second section – the Georgian text, the French translation and the commentary. Brosset received this inscription from G.A. Rosenkampf. In the publications of 1830 and then 1840 in the “Mémoires de l'Académie Impériale des sciences de St. Pétersbourg”, Brosset inclines to the fact that the inscription does not speak of David Soslan, but of os-Bagatar, and it could be the prince who died in 1307. Both the existence and the content of the inscription were questioned by E. G. Pchelina, which is reflected in the materials of her personal papers in the St. Petersburg Branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Several variants of the fate of the Nuzal inscription are given by archaeologist V.A. Kuznetsov in the book “Recom, Nuzal and Tsarazonta”; it was suggested that the Ossetian writer I.G. Yalguzidze saw the inscription, copied it and handed it to Rosenkampf. It can be assumed that Rosenkampf could have received the text of the inscription from the nephew of his brother-in-law J. Blaramberg, as well as from oriental materials that A. J. Saint-Martin prepared for publication in the 1820s. Finally, there are also cases of scientific "mischief" known to history.

Abstract The remains of a romance of Alexander were discovered among the manuscripts of Deir Amba Shenoudah, acquired through me in 1885-8 for the Bibliotheque Nationale at Paris. Three leaves of it were first published by U. Bouriant, Fragments d’un roman d’Alexandre en dialecte thibain, in the Journal asiatique, 1887, viiith series, vol. ix, pp. I-J8, with one plate; printed separately in 8vo, 36 pp. Then three more leaves, a few months later, by U. Bouriant, Fragments d’un roman d’Alexandre en dialecte thibain (Nouveau Mimoire) in the journal asiatique, viiith series, vol. x, pp. 340-349; printed separately, 8vo, r2 pp.

Abstract THE earliest known form of this story was transmitted to us by Herodotus (II, cxxi). It is found among most nations, both of the East and the West, and the question of its origin has often been discussed. In the Introduction to this volume I have given my reasons for believing that if it was not invented in Egypt it had been Egyptianised long before Herodotus wrote it down. I will add here that the name of Rhampsinitus was given in Egypt to the hero of many marvellous adventures. “The priests say that this king descended alive into the region that the Greeks call Hades, that he played at dice with the goddess Demeter, sometimes beating her, sometimes beaten by her, and that he returned, bringing with him as a present from the goddess a golden napkin’’ (Herodotus II, cxxii). These lines contain a brief summary of an Egyptian tale, the two principal scenes of which recall in a remarkable manner the game played by Satni and Nenoferkephtah in the first place (pp. 109-no), the descent of Satni into Hades with the aid of Senosiris in the second place (pp. 122-125). The French translation adopted here was that of Pierre Saliat, slightly touched up; by a singular coincidence, it has served to re-introduce the story into the popular literature of Southern Egypt. In 1884 I gave a copy of the first edition of this book to M. Nicholas Odescalchi, then master of the school at Thebes, who died in 1892. He related the principal points to some of his pupils, who told them to others. Since 1885 I have acquired two transcriptions of this new version, one of which was published in the journal Asiatique, 1885, vol. vi, pp. 149-159, the text in Arabic with a French translation, but reproduced in Etudes egyptiennes, vol. i, pp. 301-3n. The narrative has not been much altered; although one of the episodes has disappeared-that in which Rhampsinitus prostitutes his daughter. One can understand that a schoolmaster, speaking to children, would not relate the story in all its native crudity.
