Resumo:
Scientific interest in the problem of ekphrasis and the peculiarities of ekphrastic description has increased over the past decades. The article analyzes the ekphrastic poetics of E. Shvarts’ poem “Memory of Fra Beato Angelico’s fresco ‘Baptism’ at the sight of the head of John the Baptist in Rome”. The aim of this article is to identify the intermedial correlation of the verbal level with the visual level, revealing the ontological ekphrasis in this poem. The author of the article examined how the three levels of the image in the poem correlate in their ratio: artistic text, frescoes’ visual images, and symbolism (cultural codes). Ontological ekphrasis helps the poet find new ways to reveal traditional Christian themes. Visual images of the early Renaissance fresco acquire an ontological status in the text (dove, “rose,” gray color, water, fog, coal [fire], flower, river, blood, wine, relics [the head of John the Baptist], Lapis Niger, dawn). Through symbols and cultural codes, these images reveal the metaphysics of Baptism from a historical, cultural, and modern perspective, leaving the reader with options for interpretation. In the spirit of the early Renaissance artist himself, Shvarts ontologically recodes the medieval symbolism of Baptism, immersing it into thereality, perceiving Christian history as a struggle of life and death, culminating in the eschatological hope of the Second Coming of Christ. Fra Angelico turned out to be in tune with Shvarts precisely as an artist of the early Renaissance, in the painter’s movement of medieval mysticism to Renaissance ontologism and humanism.

Resumo:
John Edward Gray was a major figure in zoology in the middle of the 19th Century. An annotated bibliography of his mol-luscan publications is given with all works collated and dated, with questions of authorship discussed. Genus-group andspecies-group molluscan taxa introduced by, or incorrectly attributed to, Gray are listed. Family level names are not in-cluded as most, gastropods and bivalves, have been recently treated by Bouchet & Rocroi (2005, 2010). The included lists treat 937 genus-group nomina and 1,649 species-group nomina associated with Gray.Action is taken to conserve three names in current use found to be junior synonyms. The genus-group name Baster-otia Hörnes, 1859 is declared a nomen protectum over Harlea Gray, 1842, a nomen oblitum. The species-group namesTrochus pellisserpentis W. Wood, 1828 and Trochus armillatus W. Wood, 1828 are declared nomina protecta over Trochusemma Gray, 1827 and Trochus henslowi Gray, 1828 respectively, which become nomina oblita. The type species of five genus-group names introducd by Gray are fixed under Article 70.3.2: Euthria, Pirenella,Pusionella, Rissoella, and Tagelus.First Reviser action is taken regarding Anapa Gray, 1842 and Placobranchus euchlorus Gray, 1850. Recurring no-menclatural issues and those too complex to treat within the regular catalogue are discussed in 57 Taxa Notes. The lists are fully referenced with 743 literature titles in addition to the 307 listed for Gray.

Robert Gray was commissioned in 1847 to come to South Africa as the first Anglican bishop of Cape Town. His wife Sophia, a talented architect and artist, assisted him in his work and accompanied him on most of his journeys into the interior. Wherever he established congregations she designed the churches, some of which are still to be seen at George, Knysna, Claremont (Cape), Caledon, Fraserburg, Riversdale, Worcester, Clanwilliam and Victoria West. During their last trip into the interior in 1869 Bishop Gray, his wife and Harold Welby, the resident magistrate, chose the site for the St. John's Anglican church at Victoria West and Sophia Gray designed it. The foundation stone was laid on 27 December 1869 by John Adams but the church was completed only in 1874. The stained glass windows, especially the three above the altar depicting the crucifixion and the resurrection, form a striking feature of this church.

Three odes to Barcelona, written by Jacint Verdaguer, Joan Maragall, and “Pere Quart” [Joan Oliver] respectively, make clear the changing faces of the city. For Verdaguer, Barcelona is an expansive metropolis on its way to greatness. For Maragall, Barcelona, while rocked by conflict, remains the inescapable center and “great enchantress” of Catalan life. For Pere Quart, Barcelona is the locus of a sweeping revolution aimed at bringing about a new social order —a hope promptly shattered by the Spanish war of 1936-39. The three odes roughly correspond to three generations and offer a poetic history of the city. Skipping a generation and shifting from poetry to film, the article addresses Barcelona at the turn of the twentieth century as seen by Pedro Almodóvar in his 1998 Oscar-winning film, Todo sobre mi madre. In Almodóvar’s portrait, Barcelona is detached from its role as Catalan capital and becomes a globalized city for postmodern pilgrimages. As if to underscore this move, the celebrated technique known as trencadís employed by Gaudí and other modernists (and consisting of broken pieces of ceramic put together to form new ornamental compositions) serves as a symbolic backdrop to a number of characters who flock to the city to give new meaning to their fragmented selves.

ABSTRACT Gray markets arise when a manufacturer's products are sold outside of its authorized channels, for instance when goods designated by a multinational firm for sale in a foreign market are resold domestically. One method multinationals use to combat gray markets is to increase transfer prices to foreign subsidiaries in order to increase the gray market's cost base. We illustrate that, when a gray market competitor exists, the optimal transfer price to a foreign subsidiary exceeds marginal cost and is decreasing in the competitiveness of the domestic market. However, a multinational's discretion in setting transfer prices may be limited by mandatory arm's length transfer pricing rules. Provided gray markets exist, we characterize when mandating arm's length transfer pricing lowers domestic social welfare relative to unrestricted transfer pricing. We also demonstrate that gray markets can lead to higher domestic tax revenues, even when gray market firms do not pay taxes domestically.

Resumo:
Nursery producers are interested in supplying sedum (Sedum sp.)-vegetated modular units for the green roof industry. This research examined the influence of three rates of controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) (50, 78, and 108 g per unit of 15N–3.9P–10K, 8- to 9-month formulation) on production of modules containing one or two Sedum species. Six Sedum species were evaluated independently: ‘Angelina’ sedum (Sedum rupestre), gray sedum (S. pachyclados), ‘John Creech’ sedum (S. spurium), tasteless sedum (S. sexangulare), ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold’ sedum (S. kamtschaticum var. floriferum), and white sedum (S. album). The species were then paired as follows: white sedum/‘John Creech’ sedum, ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold’ sedum/‘Angelina’ sedum, and gray sedum/tasteless sedum. For each pair, three starting proportions of cuttings were studied. In 8 weeks, the medium and high fertility rates produced significantly more units with at least 95% vegetation coverage than the low rate. In general, increasing the fertility rate increased the fresh weight at time of harvest, except for ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold’ sedum and tasteless sedum at the high rate, which developed “melt out.” Melted-out tissues turned brown, desiccated and detracted from the visual appearance of units. ‘John Creech’ sedum and white sedum had the greatest fresh weight followed by ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold’ sedum, ‘Angelina’ sedum, and tasteless sedum. Gray sedum grew substantially slower than all other species and had the lowest fresh weight. For white sedum/‘John Creech’ sedum units, harvest fresh weight proportions were similar to starting cutting fresh weight proportions. For gray sedum/tasteless sedum units, tasteless sedum outgrew gray sedum and gray sedum was barely noticeable in finished units. Harvest fresh weight and digital image analysis (DIA) of ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold’ sedum/‘Angelina' sedum units indicated that ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold’ sedum colonized units faster than ‘Angelina’ sedum, and had greater visual impact in finished units. Units started with 25% ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold’ sedum cuttings, the smallest proportion tested, were roughly 73% covered with ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold’ sedum at harvest. We recommend growers use the medium fertility rate to produce the most units with 95% vegetation or more in the least amount of time and with reduced risk of melt out. To achieve desired final species proportions, growers may need to adjust the ratios of cuttings based on uneven species vigor.

Two men better known for their links with the cosmopolitan world of Oscar Wilde became involved in a Hebridean church-building project. It may be contrasted with the church in Edinburgh's Morningside district which Raffalovich financed for Gray. Shared priesthood in Scotland links Fr John Gray with Fr Allan MacDonald, whose work in collecting items of Gaelic culture helped to attract support for St Michael's, Eriskay. This paper corrects the misconception that the island's fishing community was impoverished. It also subjects local tradition that a miraculous draught of fish was mainly responsible for funds raised to critical examination. Conversely it shows that the financial contribution made by André Raffalovich, though significant and deserving to be better understood in the Outer Hebrides, was not so important as claimed in Edinburgh. Urban credulity over Second Sight is also featured. Details of church finance, including the late arrival of seat rents in this remote Catholic mission, no doubt have wider application.

In this paper we report and describe material of Halichondriidae sampled at 11 different stations in the Brazilian northeastern coast. Halichondria (Halichondria) marianae sp. nov. is a massively encrusting sponge, with firm texture, soft, fleshy, but compact and compressible. Color in vivo is dark green, becoming grayish or brown after fixation in ethanol; the spicules are smooth oxeas. Amorphinopsis atlantica from the Northeastern Brazil is thickly encrusting to massively, also with firm texture, color in vivo is usually yellow to dark green and both distributed in different regions, brownish after fixation in ethanol; the spicules are smooth oxeas and styles. A taxonomic study of these samples is given, including description and illustrations.

Resumo:
AbstractThis response to Dobson and White's call for a feminine firm argues that such a concept is based on a misinterpretation of Gilligan's research. Moreover, virtue ethics and feminine ethics do not share a common approach to nurturing relationships or the moral orientation of care. Acknowledging the worthwhile goals of Dobson and White's endeavor, the feminist firm is presented as offering greater potential to achieve these goals.
