Texto completo da fonteThis work focuses on the Jesuit missionary printing press that was active in Japan between 1591 and 1614. The movable type press, imported from Lisbon by the members of the Tenshō Embassy (1582-1590), played an essential role in the Jesuit accommodation strategy and in the establishment of Catholicism in the Japanese archipelago. While the first three decades of the mission (1549-1579) had been marked by great difficulties - the language barrier, the lack of missionary manpower and the precariousness of the mission due to the changing political context - the appointment of the Italian Jesuit Alessandro Valignano as Visitor of Indian and East-Asian Missions opened a new chapter in the history of the Japanese mission. Faced with a growing Christianity, he encouraged the inclusion of native members in the missionary staff and the production of printed materials, thus compensating for the lack of missionaries. This research analyzes the introduction, operation and evolution of Jesuit printing in Japan. Within the overall context of the rise of imprints, which led to the circulation of European texts beyond European borders, we focus on the role of these printed materials in modern religious missions. As they were instruments for evangelization, European catechetical texts were received, adapted and reproduced locally, thanks to the work of missionaries and native collaborators who turned missionary presses into crossroads for the production of knowledge. The Japanese mission printings served as supports of faith and manuals for the missionaries and they enable to examine missionary strategies, by investigating the choice of texts, their translations and their adaptations. Through the lens of Jesuit printing in Japan, this work seeks to cross and connect histories: the history of the universalization of Catholicism at the time of Iberian globalization and the history of the circulation of people and knowledge in the modern era
Franco, José Eduardo. "Le mythe jésuite au Portugal (XVIe-XXe siècles)". Paris, EHESS, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004EHES0077.
Texto completo da fonteThe present dissertation proposes a long duration analysis of polemic perception of the Jesuits in different chronological points of the history of Portugal. Their character, performance and role have shaped and image that gained mythical proportions, especially after Marquës de Pombal tern as Prime-Minister to king José I (1750-1777). Pombal is here studied as the founder of th myth of the Society of Jesus in Portugal. However, in order to understand the roots, dimension, impact, functions and meaning of this dark myth in Portuguese culture and mentality, we have to take into account the antecedents of this process of creation, reception and further recreation of mythical imagery. Therefore, the research inserts Pombal's foundation of the Jesuit myth into a broader time spam, which allows us to appreciate its genesis, growth and mythical evolution, for more than four centuries of history

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis analyses the introduction and the consolidation of the missionary project of the Society of Jesus in the Portuguese Amazon region in the 17th century, specifically between 1661 and 1693. This period, which has been neglected for a long time by historiography, is characterised by a deep controversy concerning the juridical status of the Amerindians who were evangelized by the Jesuits in separated villages, the aldeamentos. Father António Vieira’s arrival, in 1653, at the strategically important colony of Maranhão and Grão-Pará only stirred up the quarrel because the settlers and the civil authorities claimed the Indians as servile labour force, specially as rowers and pickers of rain forest products. After a period of uncertainty, Father Jean-Philippe Bettendorff obtained, in 1686, the promulgation of a law that defined the working conditions of the Indian neophytes and gave a large autonomy to the aldeamentos. This missionary from Luxembourg was also an outstanding personality in the Amazon region as religious superior, chronicler, lawyer, economist and architect
