Jeju Island, a picturesque island off the southern coast of South Korea, is a popular destination known for its stunning natural landscapes and unique culture. Unlike South Korea’s general visa policy, which requires visas for many nationalities, Jeju Island offers a more lenient visa-free policy, allowing most travelers to stay for up to 30 days without a visa, providing they satisfy the requirement of arriving via direct flight outside mainland South Korea. However, the island's visa policy is only partially inclusive, as it excludes nationals from 23 countries designated by the South Korean Ministry of Justice. While allowing visa-free travel for tourists is a concept explored previously, South Korea's restriction on certain nationalities undercuts its goal of promoting tourism and economic development on Jeju Island. Interestingly, other countries that have visa-free island policies do not impose such restrictions, including Vietnam’s Phú Quốc Island, Iran’s Kish and Qeshm Islands, and Norway’s Svalbard. This article delves into Jeju Island’s visa policy, the list of excluded countries, and the policies of other countries with visa-free islands. It proposes a straightforward legal remedy that could promote more inclusive tourism by allowing all nationalities to visit Jeju Island without visa restrictions. Such a move would enhance the island’s reputation as a welcoming and inclusive tourist destination and foster greater international cooperation.

The Korean species of Libnotes (Laosa) Edwards, 1926 and L. (Libnotes) Westwood, 1876 from Jeju Island are taxonomically revised. L. (Laosa) charmosyne (Alexander, 1958) and L. (Libnotes) divaricata (Alexander, 1924) are new records for South Korea and L. (Libnotes) byersiana n. sp. is described. An identification key for all Korean Libnotes, redescriptions and illustrations of the three currently known Jeju species are presented.

Resumo:

The genus Megaulacobothrus Caudell, 1921 is reviewed from South and North Korea. As a result, Megaulacobothrus aethalinus (Zubovski, 1899) is reconfirmed, Megaulacobothrus latipennis (Bolívar, 1898) is established as a doubtful species within the Korean fauna, and Megaulacobothrus jejuensis sp. nov. is newly described from Jeju Island, South Korea.

A new species of crane fly (Diptera, Limoniidae), Elephantomyia (Elephantomyia) hallasana Podenas & Podeniene, sp. nov., from Jeju Island, South Korea is described. Adult and larval characters are illustrated. Elephantomyia (E.) hallasanasp. nov. is the only species of the genus Elephantomyia Osten Sacken, 1860 recorded from Jeju Island, South Korea. Habitat, elevation range, and seasonality data are presented. Distributional notes on E. subterminalis Alexander, 1954 in the Far East of Russia (Khabarovskiy and Primorskiy regions) are discussed. An identification key for all Eastern Palaearctic species of subgenus E. (Elephantomyia) is presented.

Abstract Two raninoid crabs, Lyreidus tridentatus De Haan, 1841 and Cosmonotus mclaughlinae Tavares, 2006 from around Jeju Island and the Straits of Korea, are firstly reported from Korean waters. The raninoid crabs currently comprise 4 species in Korea. Brief descriptions and illustrations of selected parts are provided in this article as evidence supporting their correct identifications.

SUMMARY Jeju Island is an intraplate volcanic island with enigmatic origins, located on the continental shelf south of the Korean Peninsula. A dense temporary seismic array, operated on Jeju Island from 2013 to 2015, revealed several important constraints on the magma plumbing system of Jeju Island. In this study, we determined the deep crustal seismic structure beneath Jeju Island from the teleseismic P-to-S converted phases (receiver functions) recorded from 20 temporary and three permanent stations. We removed the contribution of near-surface reverberations in the resulting receiver functions by applying a resonance removal filter. We estimated crustal P-to-S velocity ratio (VP/VS) and discontinuity depth to provide teleseismic constraints on the composition and structure. We observed two major seismic discontinuities, which are the upper boundaries of a mid-to-lower crustal low-velocity zone (LVZ) and the Moho transition zone. The depth to the upper boundary of the LVZ is deep in the west and southeast (24–30 km) and shallow in the northeast (8–11 km). The LVZ can be interpreted as an extensively distributed residual magma plumbing system, with magma batches stalled at various levels and at various degrees of crystallization, consistent with the chemical diversity of Jeju magmas. The seismic characteristics of the Moho transition zone vary greatly among regions. The top interface of the Moho transition zone is at a wide range of depth (26–40 km), and is shallow at 26–29 km depths beneath central Jeju, suggesting a complex Moho topography. The presence of mafic cumulates and partially molten mushes may contribute to the observed shallow seismic discontinuity at a depth of 26–29 km. The lack of obvious crustal thickening below the shield volcano, Mt Halla, may be associated with mantle upwelling or presence of mafic underplating and cumulates below Jeju. Spatial variations of crustal VP/VS represent highly heterogeneous crustal composition, resulting from magma differentiation during the evolution of the island.

Strigula is a pantropic foliicolous lichen living on the leaf surfaces of evergreen broadleaf plants. In South Korea, Strigula is the only genus of foliicolous lichen recorded from Jeju Island. Several Strigula species have been recorded, but the ecology of Strigula in South Korea has been largely unexplored. This study examined the distribution and genetic structure of Strigula on Jeju Island. The distribution was surveyed and the influence of environmental factors (e.g., elevation, forest availability, and bioclimate) on the distribution was analyzed using a species distribution modeling analysis. In addition, the genetic variations and differentiation of Strigula multiformis populations were analyzed using two nuclear ribosomal regions. The distribution of Strigula was largely restricted to a small portion of forest on Jeju Island, and the forest availability was the most important factor in the prediction of potential habitats. The genetic diversity and differentiation of the S. multiformis population were found to be high and were divided according to geography. On the other hand, geographic and environmental distance did not explain the population differentiation. Distribution and population genetic analysis suggested that the available habitat and genetic exchange of Strigula on Jeju Island are limited by the lack of available forest in the lowlands.

This study investigated the causal relationships between international tourists’ perceived sustainability of Jeju Island, South Korea and environmentally responsible behavior, revisit intention, and positive word-of-mouth communication. Perceived sustainability was employed as a multidimensional construct comprised of economic, cultural, and environmental aspects. Data were collected from international tourists that visited Jeju Island. The results indicated that environmentally responsible behavior was influenced positively by cultural sustainability, and negatively by environmental sustainability. Revisit intention and positive word-of-mouth communication were significantly affected by the three dimensions of sustainability. Based on the findings, associated implications were suggested for sustainable destination management of Jeju Island.

Background: Jeju Island is a world-renowned tourist destination. However, with the increasing intensity of anthropogenic activities, the coastal marine environment of Jeju Island has been negatively affected. Methods and Results: Our study used five benthic indices to assess the ecological quality of the subtidal zone in northern Jeju Island. Our analysis indicated that apart from the benthic polychaetes amphipods index (BPA), other benthic indices assessed the ecological quality of the subtidal zone in northern Jeju Island as high or good. Distance-based redundancy analysis (dbRDA) indicated that pH and salinity primarily influenced macrobenthic communities in 2011 and 2012. According to the Spearman rank correlation analysis, the multivariate AZTI marine biotic Index (M-AMBI) showed stronger correlations with environmental data than other benthic indices. Conclusions: Overall, the averages of the five benthic indices suggested that the benthic ecological quality of the subtidal zone in the northern part of Jeju Island was high or good. Although immediate marine environmental management is not required, long-term monitoring remains essential. M-AMBI outperformed other benthic indices; however, we recommend using multiple benthic indices to assess the benthic ecological quality of Jeju Island due to the complexity of marine ecosystems. Effective support has been provided by our study for the marine environmental conservation along the coast of Jeju Island.

Two species of pagurid hermit crab, Diacanthurus ophthalmicus (Ortmann, 1892) and Nematopagurus lepidochirus (Doflein, 1902), which were collected in 2013 from 129 m depth, east of Jeju Island, are now recorded from South Korea for the first time. Diacanthurus ophthalmicus and Nematopagurus lepidochirus are the only members of the genera Diacanthurus and Nematopagurus known from South Korea, respectively.

In South Korea, Renewable Energy Sources (RES) have been increasing with the application of energy policies, such as Feed in Tariff (FIT) and the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). However, a rapid increase in RES supply leads to an uncertain power supply due to the intermittent output of RES. A representative example is the curtailment of Wind Turbines (WT), which frequently occurs in Jeju Island, South Korea. The proportion of RES power on Jeju Island is 67%, and there are cases where WT is curtailed among the operable sections to maintain the balance of power supply and demand. This paper applies Power-to-Gas (P2G) technology to hydrogenate, store, and utilize unused power to solve this problem. In this paper, Aewol-eup in Jeju Island is selected as a target site for case study. An Integrated Energy System (IES) for various energy operations is designed to control RES output. This paper proposes the optimal facility configuration and finally drives the optimal design and operation solution of IES by analyzing the objective functions and focusing on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) perspective.

A new species of giant “Star Shell” (Turbinidae: Astreinae) has been discovered from the Neritic Zone of the Korean Peninsula. The new taxon, Pomaulax geummiae new species, is described from specimens collected by Haenyeo women shellfish divers on Jeju Island, South Korea. Based on the range of this new species, and the distributions of other endemic taxa, a new subprovince of the Japonic Molluscan Province, the Korean Subprovince, is described.

Abstract To better understand the genetic relatedness of the eastern bent-wing bat Miniopterus fuliginosus across East Asia, mitochondrial D-loop sequences were analyzed from 39 M. fuliginosus individuals living on Jeju Island, South Korea. Seven different haplotypes were identified. Neighbor-joining analysis was performed and divergence time was calculated in combination with available online data on D-loop and ND2 sequences of M. fuliginosus in East Asia, respectively. Results suggest that M. fuliginosus populations living on Jeju Island and in Japan originated from China in the past 20,000 years.

Non-native species threaten native ecosystems and species, particularly on islands where rates of endemism and vulnerability to threats are high. Understanding species invasion will aid in providing insights into ecological and evolutionary processes. To identify the non-native sika deer (Cervus nippon) population in Jeju, South Korea, and their phylogenetic affinities, we collected tissue samples from roadkill and the World Natural Heritage Headquarters in Jeju. Mitochondrial DNA cytochrome B (CytB) gene sequences were analyzed to determine two distinct CytB haplotypes. Phylogenetic analysis using maximum likelihood tree revealed two haplotypes of CytB clustered into two different groups representing two subspecies: C. n. yakushimae, native to Japan, and C. n. taiouanus, native to Taiwan. The tentative divergence time between the two subspecies was estimated at 1.81 million years. Our study confirmed that the two subspecies of sika deer are sympatric in the natural ecosystem of Jeju Island. This study provides valuable information to help government and conservation agencies understand alien species and determine control policies for conserving native biodiversity in South Korea.

Cultivated flowering cherries (Prunus subgenus Cerasus), which are one of the most popular ornamental trees around the world, have been developed through artificial hybridizations among wild flowering cherries. Among the hundreds of cultivars of flowering cherries, Prunus ×yedoensis ‘Somei-yoshino’ is the most common and widespread. However, its origin and genetic relationship to wild P. yedoensis, naturally occurring on Jeju Island, South Korea, have long been debated. We used sequence polymorphisms in eight chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) noncoding regions to distinguish wild and cultivated flowering cherries among 104 individuals (55 accessions). We were able to distinguish two distinct groups, one corresponding to wild P. yedoensis collections from Jeju Island and the other collections of cultivated P. ×yedoensis from Korea, Japan, and the United States. The chlorotype diversity of wild P. yedoensis in Jeju Island and cultivated P. ×yedoensis collections in the United States was quite high, suggesting multiple natural hybrid origins and long history of cultivation from different original sources, respectively.

Jeju Island is the most famous sightseeing place in South Korea. Jeju has high death rate of injury in the country. We investigated the characteristics of trauma patients visiting ED by comparing visitors with residents in Jeju. New Injury Severity Score (NISS)，alcohol-related trauma. intentional trauma, mechanisms of trama and motor vehicle accidents, places trauma occurred, and results after treatment were investigated. A total of 5, 114 trauma patients visited ED from March 2008 to February 2009. There were no differences in NlSS.alcohol-related trauma，intentional trauma, mechanism of trauma, and results after treatment between residents and visitors. On the other hand, more visitors got injured in the commercial area and outdoor area , and they had more motorcycle accidents and passenger accidents. lesser driver accidents (p<0.001). We should take adequate measuresfor safely of residents and visitors using these results to decrease trauma mortality in Jeju.

Abstract 2018 was a politically tempestuous time for South Korea as a little over 500, mostly male, Yemeni asylum-seekers landed on Korea’s Jeju Island. Their unexpected arrival caught Korean society, already in the midst of its own #MeToo wave off guard, resulting in a wave of pro- and anti-refugee demonstrations across the country. Fueled by real and fake news about refugee illegal activities in Europe, anti-refugee backlash in Korea took an Islamophobic and feminist tone. Based on digital ethnography, this article presents observations from online voices – refugees, feminists, and media actors – expressed through Naver News and Naver Cafes to assess the ways in which Korea’s refugee crisis was represented in local and global anti-refugee and Islamophobic narratives, aimed in particular at Muslim men. This research highlights the impact of European narratives on Korean society and raises questions over how Korean society can create a wider, inclusive digital democracy.

A new species, Peucedanum chujaense K. Kim, S.-H. Oh, C.-S. Kim & C.-W. Park (Apiaceae), is described and illustrated. The new species distributed in the Chuja Islands off the north coast of Jeju Island in South Korea. It is morphologically similar to P. litorale, but is distinct from the latter in having 2-pinnate leaves (vs. 1-pinnate leaves), conspicuous calyx teeth 0.4–1 mm long (vs. minute calyx teeth 0.1–0.3 mm long), 20–24 (vs. 10–18) flowers per umbellet, seeds oblong (vs. semicircular) in cross section.

During a survey of intertidal zones at beaches on Jeju Island, two species belonging to the family Thoracostomopsidae were discovered. One new species, Enoploides koreanus sp. nov. and one known species, Epacanthion hirsutum Shi & Xu, 2016 are reported. Along with morphological analysis, mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase c subunit 1 (mtCOI) sequences and 18S rRNA sequences of the species were also obtained and used to check relative p-distance and phylogenetic positions. While most species of Enoploides have long spicules, the new species belongs to a group of Enoploides with short spicules < 150 µm). Of the seven species with short spicules, the new species is most closely related to E. disparilis Sergeeva, 1974. They both have similar body length, fairly similar sized and shaped spicules with small gubernaculum running parallel to distal end of spicule, and an index value of b. The new species can be distinguished from E. disparilis by having pre-anal supplementary organ with short conical tail, while E. disparilis lacks pre-anal supplementary organ and has a long conico-cylindrical tail. Along with the description of the new species, the genus Enoploides Ssaweljev, 1912 is bibliographically reviewed and revised. Of 45 species described to date, 27 are now considered valid, 16 species inquirendae due to inadequate descriptions and ambiguity of the material examined, along with two cases of nomen nudum. With this review, we provide an updated diagnosis and list of valid species, a tabular key comparing diagnostic characters of all valid species, and a new complete key to species. One known species, Epacanthion hirsutum Shi & Xu, 2016, is reported in Korea for the first time. The morphology agrees well with the original description provided by Shi & Xu, 2016. As they had already reviewed the genus at the time of reporting four Epacanthion species, we provide only a description, depiction, and measurements for comparison purposes.

The major and trace elements of Quaternary alkaline volcanic rocks on Jeju Island were analyzed to determine their origin and formation mechanism. The samples included tephrite, trachybasalts, basaltic trachyandesites, tephriphonolites, trachytes, and mantle xenoliths in the host basalt. Although the samples exhibited diversity in SiO2 contents, the relations of Zr vs. Nb and La vs. Nb indicated that the rocks were formed from the fractional crystallization of a single parent magma with slight continental crustal contamination (r: 0–0.3 by AFC modeling), rather than by the mixing of different magma sources. The volcanic rocks had an enriched-mantle-2-like ocean island basalt signature and the basalt was formed by partial melting of the upper mantle, represented by the xenolith samples of our study. The upper mantle of Jeju was affected by arc magmatism, associated with the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate. Therefore, we inferred that two separate magmatic events occurred on Jeju Island: one associated with the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate (represented by xenoliths), and another associated with a divergent setting when intraplate magmatism occurred (represented by the host rocks). With AFC modeling, it can be proposed that the Jeju volcanic rocks were formed by the fractional crystallization of the upper mantle combined with assimilation of the continental crust. The xenoliths in this study had different geochemical patterns from previously reported xenoliths, warranting further investigations.

The daggertooth pike conger, Muraenesox cinereus, is an important demersal fish species in East Asia but the catch amount has declined in recent years. Spawning areas of M. cinereus have not yet been determined; identifying these have serious implications for resource management. Ichthyoplankton surveys are an effective method of distinguishing fish spawning areas and periods. Fish eggs were sampled from the waters adjacent to South Korea in August 2020 and 2022 using a Multiple Opening/Closing Net and Environmental Sensing System or a bongo net. In 2021, M. cinereus eggs were not collected. Three unidentified eggs (2.0–2.2 mm in diameter) were collected from the southeastern sea of Jeju Island at a seawater depth of 20–30 m and temperature of 20–22 °C. Muraenesox cinereus preleptocephali were gathered at 10–20 m depths from Jeju Island’s southernmost and eastern sea areas. The eggs and preleptocephali were identified as M. cinereus by their mitochondrial DNA 16S rRNA sequences. This is a new finding of eggs and leptocephalus of Muraenesox cinereus off Jeju Island, South Korea, which increases our understanding of the recruitment process of M. cinereus to facilitate resource management and species conservation.

Herein, a new species of the genus Trichoglossum is described. The new species named as T. jejuense was collected from Jeju Island in Korea. It is distinguished from other Trichoglossum species by thick, 8-spored asci and 15–16 septate ascospores. Phylogenetic analyses of the internal transcribed spacer of ribosomal RNA and morphological characteristics suggest that T. jejuense is a distinct species.

Purpose The purpose of this research is to analyze the shifting perceptions of international tourists to Jeju Island and provide practical lessons to the tourism industry. Specifically, in regard to three United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) natural World Heritage sites in Jeju, this research measures the most salient topics mentioned by tourists to inform a more accurate perception of the island’s most valuable natural assets as reported by tourism experiences. Design/methodology/approach This study used a Web crawler to gather over 1,500 English language reviews from international tourists from a famous travel information website. The collected data were then preprocessed for stemming and lemmatization. After this, the processed text data were analyzed through a latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA)-based topic modeling approach to identify the most prominent clusters of ideas mentioned and represent them visually through graphs, tables and charts. Findings The findings from this research suggest that there are ten identifiable topics. Topics focusing on “adventure,” “summits” and “winter” showed noticeable increases, whereas topics focusing on “sunrise peak” and “UNESCO” have decreased over time. There is a trend for international tourists to be ever more conscious of the adventurous and rugged aspects of Jeju, and the novelty of mentioning UNESCO status seems to have worn off. Furthermore, there is the proclivity for tourists to mention “worth” and “enjoy” more as time goes on. Originality/value This study applies LDA-based topic modeling and LDAvis using user-generated online reviews with time-series analyses. Consequently, it provides unique insights into the changing perceptions of ecotourism on Jeju today, as well as contribution to smart tourism fields.

Religions in Jeju, South Korea, have sometimes been in conflict with each other, but have generally coexisted peacefully. In a situation where diverse religions share an island that is isolated from the mainland, they have emphasized that they are similar yet superior to their rivals. Religions that were imported to Jeju, including Confucianism, Buddhism, and Christianity, have tried to make themselves look familiar to Jeju people on the basis of people’s knowledge of preexisting religions. These religions sometimes embraced rituals of preexisting religions to which people were strongly attached. The Jeju indigenous religion has also acknowledged that the ideas and practices of Buddhism and Confucianism have remarkable similarities to those of its own. Simultaneously, each religion in Jeju has claimed its superiority over others. Religions in Jeju have argued that other religions’ partial truth and limited value are in sharp contrast with the complete truth and superior value of their own. They have asserted that only they can provide the proper way of keeping the order of the universe or attaining salvation of human beings. This common rhetoric that “my religion is similar but superior to other religions” has been repeated in Jeju, in order to persuade people outside the religion to accept or at least approve it on the one hand, and to maintain the peaceful coexistence with other religions on the other hand.

Lichens are symbiotic organisms containing diverse microorganisms. Endolichenic fungi (ELF) are one of the inhabitants living in lichen thalli, and have potential ecological and industrial applications due to their various secondary metabolites. As the function of endophytic fungi on the plant ecology and ecosystem sustainability, ELF may have an influence on the lichen diversity and the ecosystem, functioning similarly to the influence of endophytic fungi on plant ecology and ecosystem sustainability, which suggests the importance of understanding the diversity and community pattern of ELF. In this study, we investigated the diversity and the factors influencing the community structure of ELF in Jeju Island, South Korea by analyzing 619 fungal isolates from 79 lichen samples in Jeju Island. A total of 112 ELF species was identified and the most common species belonged to Xylariales in Sordariomycetes. The richness and community structure of ELF were significantly influenced by the host taxonomy, together with the photobiont types and environmental factors. Our results suggest that various lichen species in more diverse environments need to be analyzed to expand our knowledge of the diversity and ecology of ELF.

Abstract The Mw 4.9 Offshore Jeju Island, Korea, earthquake of 14 December 2021 is the most significant event that occurred close to the young intraplate volcano on the continental shelf south of the Korean Peninsula. About 185 small earthquakes occurred during nine days following the mainshock. We accurately located 39 events despite limited station azimuthal coverage. We found that the mainshock ruptured along a ∼1.4 km long fault striking east–west (275°) and triggered two distinct clusters in the north–northeast direction. The mainshock is pure strike-slip faulting on the vertical plane. Its horizontal P axis strikes 50°, which differs substantially from the average trend of ∼70° for earthquakes in the southern Korean Peninsula. However, it is consistent with the P-axes orientation of shallow earthquakes in the offshore western Kyushu and along Okinawa trough. The 2021 Offshore Jeju Island earthquake may be the first significant earthquake in southern Korea–East China Sea continental shelf to date, whose causative fault is well constrained by accurate aftershock locations and detailed space–time analysis of the earthquake sequence. This earthquake may represent intraplate deformation in response to the tectonic evolution of the Philippine Sea plate, which is manifested through volcanic activities.

Limnophilinae crane flies belonging to the genus Adelphomyia Bergroth, 1891 of the Korean Peninsula were studied starting from 1937, but only one species A. macrotrichiata (Alexander, 1923) has been recorded from North Korea so far. The genus was unknown from South Korea. Four species were found during our studies on the Peninsula, one of them from Jeju Island described as new, Adelphomyia jejuana Podenas, sp. nov. Three species are recorded from both northern and southern parts of the Peninsula. Specimens on which was based the record of A. macrotrichiata from North Korea was misidentified and no more specimens were collected; therefore, A. macrotrichiata is deleted from the Korean species list. Habitat, elevation range, and seasonality data is presented for each species. Images of taxonomically important morphological characters, and an identification key for all Palaearctic species of the genus Adelphomyia are presented. Distribution maps are presented for all Korean species.

Seawater intrusion (SWI) is a critical issue for coastal aquifers, especially in islands where groundwater is the sole source of water supply. The objective of this study was to develop a straightforward approach to evaluating groundwater vulnerability to SWI, using a statistical method with spatial analyses applied to the four basins of Jeju volcanic island. In this study, five factors were parametrized, including hydraulic conductivity, groundwater level, distance from shoreline to wells, well depth and groundwater use. These parameters were spatially interpolated and correlated with groundwater electrical conductivity as a proxy for groundwater salinization, resulting in three parameters with significant relations: groundwater use, well depth, and groundwater level. Then, a numerical model for the SWI vulnerability assessment was constructed using ratings and weights, and by evaluating the vulnerability as weak, moderate and high with a numerical index. Regional conditions, including major land-use types, industrial activities, population and the degree of urbanisation, could affect parameters differently at each region. Based on the percentage of area with a high vulnerability, regions of Jeju Island followed the order of eastern > northern > western > southern, indicating that preventive measures for SWI and its influencing parameters could be applied more effectively in certain regions.

Seawater intrusion (SWI) is a major environmental threat to groundwater resources in coastal regions. GALDIT is an index-based SWI vulnerability model that is increasingly being used in many parts of the world to identify regions that are vulnerable to various types of SWI based on six major parameters. In this study, we conducted a vulnerability assessment of Jeju Island to SWI based on several years of collected groundwater level data and hydrogeological values where the objectives of the study were to visualize the distribution of recent SWI, to increase the reliability of the GALDIT assessment method by improving current GALDIT techniques, and to respond effectively to diagnoses of SWI on Jeju. To improve the GALDIT assessment method to fit the Jeju model, the possibility of electrical conductivity was explored instead of standard GALDIT parameters that represented the existing impact of SWI. Improvements to the GALDIT vulnerability assessment method made it clear that groundwater became increasingly vulnerable to SWI in the existing high-vulnerability group. The results of this research may be used to develop a quantitative index for rational decision-making on policies and suggest the need for further improvements in groundwater management, with a stronger focus on easing groundwater use.

Abstract A mesoscale atmospheric numerical model is used to simulate two cases of Kármán vortex shedding in the lee of Jeju Island, South Korea, in the winter of 2013. Observed cloud patterns associated with the Kármán vortex shedding are successfully reproduced. When the winter monsoon flows out from the Eurasian continent, a convective mixed layer develops through the supply of heat and moisture from the relatively warm Yellow Sea and encounters Jeju Island and dynamical conditions favorable for the formation of lee vortices are realized. Vortices that form behind the island induce updrafts to trigger cloud formation at the top of the convective boundary layer. A sensitivity experiment in which surface drag on the island is eliminated demonstrates that the formation mechanism of the atmospheric Kármán vortex shedding is different from that behind a bluff body in classical fluid mechanics.

Abstract On 2 April 2007, nine cases of moderate-or-greater-level clear-air turbulence (CAT) were observed from pilot reports over South Korea during the 6.5 h from 0200 to 0830 UTC. Those CAT events occurred in three different regions of South Korea: the west coast, Jeju Island, and the eastern mountain areas. The characteristics and possible mechanisms of the CAT events in the different regions are investigated using the Weather Research and Forecasting model. The simulation consists of six nested domains focused on the Korean Peninsula, with the finest horizontal grid spacing of 0.37 km. The simulated wind and temperature fields in a 30-km coarse domain are in good agreement with those of the Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System (RDAPS) analysis data of the Korean Meteorological Administration and observed soundings of operational radiosondes over South Korea. In synoptic features, an upper-level front associated with strong meridional temperature gradients is intensified, and the jet stream passing through the central part of the Korean Peninsula exceeds 70 m s−1. Location and timing of the observed CAT events are reproduced in the finest domains of the simulated results in three different regions. Generation mechanisms of the CAT events revealed in the model results are somewhat different in the three regions. In the west coast area, the tropopause is deeply folded down to about z = 4 km because of the strengthening of an upper-level front, and the maximized vertical wind shear below the jet core produces localized turbulence. In the Jeju Island area, localized mixing and turbulence are generated on the anticyclonic shear side of the enhanced jet, where inertial instability and ageostrophic flow are intensified in the lee side of the convective system. In the eastern mountain area, large-amplitude gravity waves induced by complex terrain propagate vertically and subsequently break down over the lee side of topography, causing localized turbulence. For most of the CAT processes considered, except for the mountain-wave breaking, standard NWP resolutions of tens of kilometers are adequate to capture the CAT events.

The primary production (PP) by phytoplankton in marine ecosystems is essential for carbon cycling and fueling food webs. Hence, estimating the PP in the territorial sea of each country is a necessary step to achieving carbon neutrality. To estimate the PP in the territorial sea of the Republic of Korea from 2005 to 2021, we analyzed various physiochemical parameters, such as sea surface temperature (SST), Secchi depth, and concentrations of chlorophyll-a and nutrients in the seas of five regions, including the East Sea, West Sea, western South Sea, eastern South Sea, and the waters off Jeju Island. During the 17-year study period, the SST tended to increase, while the nutrient concentrations declined, except in the Jeju area. Overall, the PP did not show a specific temporal trend, but daily PP in the western South Sea was the highest among the five regions. Moreover, the maximum PP in the Korean territorial waters (76,450 km2 ) was estimated at 11,227 Gg C y-1, which accounts for 0.03% of the global PP. The results may give insights into a better understanding of the PP, further resource utilization, and environmental sustainability in the studied region.
