Mr. Moto, a fictional Japanese detective, achieved mass popularity through a series of 1930s films starring Peter Lorre. Moto was the creation of successful writer John P. Marquand (1893–1960), whose novels depicted a Japanese international spy quite different from the genial Mr. Moto of film. Revisiting the original Mr. Moto novels illuminates a Japanese character who rationalized Japan’s 1930s continental expansionism in ways that might have been acceptable to many Americans. Although Marquand intended to present Mr. Moto as a “moderate” and reasonable Japanese agent and generally present East Asians in a positive light, it is difficult to see the novels as doing anything more than buttressing prevailing racial and ethnic stereotypes.

Ogawa Yoko as a Japanese novelist mostly features the life of contemporary Japanese society in her novels. One that stands out from her works is the image of the Japanese family structure. Ogawa outlines the Japanese family structure in contrast to the Japanese family structure in actual society, as in the novel Kifunjin A No Sosei, Hakase No Aishita Suushiki, and Miina No Koushin. These three novels depict Japanese family structure more complex than her other novels. How Ogawa described Japanese family structure in the three novels is the issue on this article. This article is a literature study; data were collected from the three novels and analyzed using sociological literature approach and the concept of Japanese traditional family known as ie system. This paper shows that there was an implementation of the ie system in the three novels yet it was only a part of the ie concept.

Southeast Asia as depicted in Japanese detective novels was not only a source of exotic mysteries, but also a space where complex histories and cultures were intertwined. One example is “Kaikyo Tenchikai”, written by Oguri Mushitaro, who stayed in Murray from 1941 to 1942. One feature of this work is that the people who solve the novel’s mystery are Iinuma, an apprentice doctor, and Kogure, a detective novelist and a member of the press. Their relationship is reminiscent of the one between Holmes and Watson, but the detective and the narrator are not clearly distinct, and in fact their voices gradually overlap. They are more like characters in spy novels than in detective novels. Another example of the genre is Yuki Shoji’s “Gomez no na ha Gomez”, in which a former Japanese soldier who assimilated into Vietnam appears, having not returned to Japan after the end of the war. Here, the theme of being a double agent overlaps with that of national betrayal. In one more example, a Japanese holdout from the end of the war living in Asia also appears in Matsumoto Seicho’s “Atsui Kinu”. Ultimately, the divergence between the ideal of the liberation of Asia, which was the cause of the Pacific War, and the reality brought about by the Japanese military invasion, casts a complex shadow over mysteries set in Southeast Asia.

The Japanese occupation government in the Indonesia carried out propaganda using various media, including literature. The propaganda often depicts the condition of women at that time. This study examines the picture of women in the Japanese occupation that has been reflected in four novels published in two eras: during and after the Japanese occupation. Novels published during the Japanese occupation were Palawidja by Karim Halim and Cinta Tanah Air by Nur Sutan Iskandar. Meanwhile, the novels published after the Japanese occupation were Dan Perang pun Usai by Ismail Marahimin and Kembang Jepun by Remy Sylado. The novels were approached by the sociology of literature by Alan Swingewood and Diana Laurenson. The research prove that the four novels have a different picture of women in the Japanese occupation. Women in novels written during the Japanese occupation are described as having a fate full of suffering, for example, in the novels Kembang Jepun and Dan Perang pun Usai. Meanwhile, women in novels written after the Japanese occupation are described as having a luckier fate, as seen in Palawidja and Cinta Tanah Air. These depictions came to differences in the activities, authorship background, and time interval of the writing of the four authors.

This paper gives an overview of the reception of translated Japanese detective novels in South Korea from 1945 to 2021. The resulting analysis of the impact and characteristics of these translations, in the context of changes in Korean publishing and in popular culture, explains the popularity of Japanese detective novels in South Korea, and the significance of the still-current Japanese detective novel boom. Previously I have analyzed the reception of translated Japanese detective novels in South Korea from 1945 to 2009, so in this article, I will continue this analysis for the period up to 2021.The translation and publication of Japanese detective novels in South Korea began in 1961, and the number of such texts increased little by little every year until the end of the 20th century. Then, in the 2000s, the number of translations increased sharply, and since the beginning of the 2010s, detective novels have been translated and published at nearly three times the rate as was previously the case. The popularity of Japanese detective novels in South Korea has been influenced by the prevailing circumstances in the publishing world and by political and social conditions in South Korea. In addition, detective novels with a social dimension were popular from the 1960s to the 1980s, but since 1990 when they began to make an impact on mass consumer culture, more diverse detective novels and those with lighter themes have come to the fore. Finally, the unprecedented Japanese detective novel boom Korea is experiencing is due to the appearance of star writers such as Keigo Higashino and Miyuki Miyabe. This boom seems to have cultivated a more refined sense in Korean readers of the aesthetics of detective novels, and it has also been naturally influenced by the mystery narrative form in Korean popular culture.

This research aims at scrutinizing two novels, Palawidja by Karim Halim dan Kembang Jepun by Remy Sylado, by using the theory of literary sosiology to observe the point of views of each authors. Obviosly, they have different pictures on the situation in Indonesia during the Japanese occupation. Remy Sylado, who wrote after the Japanese occupation, gives a more objective picture in his novels than Karim Halim, who live and wrote novels during the Japanese occupation, does. Palawidja is biased due to the fact that Karim Halim worked for Balai Pustaka, a publishing company under the control of the Japanese authority. Therefore, he supported the Japanese propaganda and could not give an objective picture of the condition in Indonesia at the time.

The Akutagawa Ryunosuke Award, set in honor of the first-class Japanese literary master Akutagawa Ryunosuke (1892-1927), is not only the top award in the Japanese Pure Literature Award, but also the most authoritative one in the Japanese literary field. This indicates the position of Ryunosuke Akutagawa in the history of Japanese literature. Studying Ryunosuke Akutagawa's war novels undoubtedly has inspiring meaning for us to understand Japan's war novels. Therefore, based on previous studies, the researcher discusses "General", the first masterpiece in a series of works criticizing Japan's aggressive war after Akutagawa went to China. On the basis of the overall dynamic research method currently advocated, this paper attempts to explore the anti-war consciousness in "General" through detailed reading of the text. The main body of this article is divided into three parts. The first part sorts out the background of "General", summarizes the entire whole text and the main idea. The second part is to study the Japanese during the war. Japanese soldiers strongly admire the Mikado, and Japan has a strict hierarchical system, which are all exploited by extreme militarists. The third part analyzes the anti war consciousness and the foolish loyalty of Japanese soldiers in four independent and meaningful works, namely "The White Army", "Spy", "Performance on the Field", and "Father and Son".

The word “Gifted scholar” riginated from Chinese literature During the exchange of Chinese culture with East Asian countries, “Gifted scholar” was absorbed by Japan, which was influenced by Chinese culture, and became a synonym for the hero in Japanese romance novels. As an imitative work of the Chinese Yuan drama “The Romance of the West Chamber”, the Japanese Chinese-character novels “The Romance of Happy Couple ” has both similarities and differences with the Image of Gifted scholar in the Story of “The Romance of the West Chamber”. Based on text analysis, this paper will sort out the content about the image of the gifted scholar in the Chinese and Japanese “The Story of the West Chamber”, highlight the different aspects of the image of the gifted scholar in the two works, and focus on exploring the reasons for this difference. The Japanese writer Miki Aika was influenced by Chinese Confucian culture. The male protagonist in “The Romance of Happy Couple” inherited the image of talented scholar who combines talent, amorous feeling and appearance from “The Romance of the West Chamber”. On the other hand, due to the cultural characteristics of the Japanese nation and the development of the Meiji Restoration, the image of the gifted scholar in Japan's “The Story of the West Chamber” has changed again. By examining and comparing the image of the gifted scholar in Chinese and Japanese “The Story of the West Chamber”, this paper explains that although the external image of the hero in the <The Romance of Happy Couple> is similar to that of the Chinese gifted scholar, his inner core characteristics still contain Japan’s national character and contemporaneity.

Previous research on testimony literature including novels that reproduce the ‘comfort women’ of the Japanese military has tended to rely on the aesthetics of conventional realism. The novels on the ‘comfort women’ of the Japanese military this study focuses on, however, reveal different aspects from the previous reproduction of reality like the imitation of reality. This study intensively analyzes noteworthy texts out of the works that have been released up to now after the 1980’s, for instance, Yun Jeong-mo, Nora Okja Keller, Go Hye-jeong, and Kim Sum’s novels. The novels on the ‘comfort women’ of the Japanese military as testimony literature employ the technique of ‘fantasy’ in order to obtain reality and contain aesthetic autonomy in them. Also, such borrowing of ‘fantasy’ shows paradoxically that pain is indescribable. Moreover, those novels not just remaining in the representation of historical pain seek to heal trauma caused by pain from an ecofeminist perspective and pursue the narrative of salvation for the sake of survival.

This thesis was aimed towards translated Japanese web novels to findout what kind of features they have and if the translated text kept thefeatures of the original novel. Simultaneously, the translationtechniques utilized in the translated novel were also examined. To findout the answer, two case studies were conducted and the web novelswere chosen at random with some parameters set. An interview wasconducted with translators of web novels to help reinforce or clear updoubts surrounding the results of the case study. The thesis also brieflydescribes the overall industry surrounding web novels. The randomlychosen translated novels did have most of the features of the original.Though some aspects were lost in translation. The translationtechniques utilised were also overwhelmingly literal translation. Whythat is has several possible answers among which the languageproficiency of the translator or no formal training in translation.

This thesis examines the theme of alienation along with the train motif in the life journeys of the protagonists in four modern Japanese novels. Each chapter is devoted to an individual novel and explores its hero's feelings of socio-psychological estrangement on personal and interpersonal levels as well as the role of the train journey which serves to arouse, create or alleviate such feelings. Chapter One deals with Sanshiro (Sanshiro. 1908) by Natsume Soseki and follows the hero on his long train journey from backward Kyushu to progressive Tokyo. The people he meets on the train foreshadow the feelings of uneasiness and estrangement he will encounter in the capital. For Sanshiro, the noisy, crowded streetcars initially represent the "real world," constantly reminding him of his alienation from it. Once over his culture shock the hero's sense of not belonging shifts to his relationships with his friends. Gradually he begins to feel more comfortable with himself and the world around him. Chapter Two examines A Dark Night's Passing (An'ya Koro, 1921-37) by Shiga Naoya. In his search to resolve feelings of unacceptability arising from his childhood experiences, Kensaku takes a series of journeys, many by train, "backward" in time. The train thus serves as an agent which can transcend the barriers of both time and space, separating or reuniting people and creating or breaking down distances between places. It can arouse feelings of happiness, excitement, sadness or loneliness in its passengers or simply provide him with a place to relax and dream about a brighter future. Chapter Three focuses on Snow Country (Yukiguni. 1934-1947) by Kawabata Yasunari. Shimamura's purpose in visiting the snow country is two-fold -- he both desires to escape from and needs to confront the reality of the wasted effort in his life and resulting sense of alienation from humanity. The train complies. As it brings him into this region of Japan it completely loses any connection with reality, creating a void in which weirdly beautiful apparitions float up before our hero's very eyes. Once in this fantasy land our hero is taught to see his own coldness and how to become more human by two beautiful women. It is then left up to Shimamura to put what he has learned into action when he returns to Tokyo by the train which, heading away from the snow country, takes on very real qualities. The final chapter examines The Temple of the Golden Pavilion (Kinkakuii. 1956) by Mishima Yukio. This novel deals with Mizoguchi, a most frightening character whose mixed-up views of both himself and the world are but a thin disguise for insanity. The hero suffers terribly from the resulting feelings of not belonging as well as a great inferiority complex. The situation is complicated by his strange love-hate relationship with the Golden Temple to which he attributes human qualities. The train in this novel serves as the symbolic vehicle which transports the hero back and forth between the region of his birth and what he calls "the station of death" where he will eventually destroy both the temple and the hated half of his personality. In the conclusion the relevance of alienation, trains and the journey of life in modern Japanese literature are discussed.

This dissertation examines representations of gay men in contemporary Japanese novels and films produced from around the beginning of the 1990s so-called gay boom era to the present day. Although these were produced in Japanese and for the Japanese market, and reflect contemporary Japan’s social, cultural and political milieu, I argue that they not only articulate the concerns and desires of gay men and (other queer people) in Japan, but also that they reflect a transnational global gay culture and identity. The study focuses on the work of current Japanese writers and directors while taking into account a broad, historical view of male-male eroticism in Japan from the Edo era to the present. It addresses such issues as whether there can be said to be a Japanese gay identity; the circulation of gay culture across international borders in the modern period; and issues of representation of gay men in mainstream popular culture products. As has been pointed out by various scholars, many mainstream Japanese representations of LGBT people are troubling, whether because they represent “tourism”—they are made for straight audiences whose pleasure comes from being titillated by watching the exotic Others portrayed in them—or because they are made by and for a female audience and have little connection with the lives and experiences of real gay men, or because they circulate outside Japan and are taken as realistic representations by non-Japanese audiences. In this dissertation I argue that positive, supportive, indeed overtly political messages can be found, even in texts with problematical representations. I show that, over the nearly twenty year period covered by the novels and films I study, it is possible to discern a tendency towards less stereotyped, and more overtly political, portrayals. The novels and films I discuss in this dissertation represent a disparate range of genres, producers, and representations, and characters who are straight, gay, bisexual, transgender and transsexual. Yet all have in common the universal themes of overcoming or becoming, ranging from journeys to coming out, growing up, and finding the self to stories of triumphing over homophobia and prevailing over discrimination.

This thesis is a broadly chronological study of representations of Japan and the Japanese in Australian novels, stories and memoirs from the late nineteenth century to the twenty-first century. Adopting Edward Said???s Orientalist notion of the `Other???, it attempts to elaborate patterns in which Australian authors describe and evaluate the Japanese. As well as examining these patterns of representation, this thesis outlines the course of their development and change over the years, how they relate to the context in which they occur, and how they contribute to the formation of wider Australian views on Japan and the Japanese. The thesis considers the role of certain Australian authors in formulating images and ideas of the Japanese ???Other???. These authors, ranging from fiction writers to journalists, scholars and war memoirists, act as observers, interpreters, translators, and sometimes ???traitors??? in their cross-cultural interactions. The thesis includes work from within and outside ???mainstream??? writings, thus expanding the contexts of Australian literary history. The major ???periods??? of Australian literature discussed in this thesis include: the 1880s to World War II; the Pacific War; the post-war period; and the multicultural period (1980s to 2000). While a comprehensive examination of available literature reveals the powerful and continuing influence of the Pacific War, images of ???the stranger???, ???the enemy??? and later ???the ally??? or ???partner??? are shown to vary according to authors, situations and wider international relations. This thesis also examines gender issues, which are often brought into sharp relief in cross-cultural representations. While typical East-West power-relationships are reflected in gender relations, more complex approaches are also taken by some authors. This thesis argues that, while certain patterns recur, such as versions of the ???Cho-Cho-San??? or ???Madame Butterfly??? story, Japan-related works have given some Australian authors, especially women, opportunities to reveal more ???liberated??? viewpoints than seemed possible in their own cultural context. As the first extensive study of Japan in Australian literary consciousness, this thesis brings to the surface many neglected texts. It shows a pattern of changing interests and interactions between two nations whose economic interactions have usually been explored more deeply than their literary and cultural relations.

This study focuses on four 21st Century Malaysian novels about the Japanese Occupation, written in English, and explores the representations of trauma, narrative and memory in these novels in relation to trauma theory and Malaysian Literature in English. Trauma studies take as its point of departure the idea that an overpowering event, powerful enough to break the shield of consciousness, can return as symptoms of compulsive and/or repetitive behaviours after a period of latency that brings the traumatized victim back to the event. However, trauma is seen not as, or as the result of a single, isolated event, but as a condition that repeats itself across different temporalities. This argument is taken up in the analysis of four novels that use the Japanese Occupation as a theme and/ or setting, which examines the attempts of reconstructing the traumatic events of the Occupation in narrative, as well as the narrative strategies that display the breakdown of temporality in trauma. This thesis consists of 5 chapters. The introduction of this thesis, which forms the first chapter, establishes the groundwork for the rest of the dissertation, and situates the study in its historical, literary and theoretical contexts. It provides the background of earlier scholarship on Malaysian Literature in English, the historical scholarship on the Japanese Occupation and its relation to this analysis, and the theoretical background that informs the argument of this study. Chapter Two explores Tan Twan Eng‟s The Gift of Rain, and discusses the significance of using the first-person, autobiographical style when writing about trauma, as well as the role that narrative features such as flashbacks play to show a sense of the dual temporality of trauma. It also examines the need for the presence of a listener-as-witness when narrating trauma, in relation to the novel as a survivor narrative. Chapter Three focuses on the relationship between history and memory, as well as remembering and forgetting, in relation to Tan‟s second novel, The Garden of Evening Mists. It explores how trauma can fragment the self and collective identities of traumatized subjects. It also explores the difficulty of incorporating trauma into a meaningful life-narrative. Chapter Four analyzes Vyvyanne Loh‟s Breaking the Tongue, and explores the significance of using the second-person narrative when narrating trauma, which can be seen as a strategy to represent the dissociation that comes with trauma. It also analyzes the significance of the delay in the temporal structure in the narratives of traumatized subjects, and explores the importance of dreams and nightmares in these novels. This chapter also examines the crisis of witnessing that the characters are confronted with in the face of trauma. Chapter Five explores Rani Manicka‟s The Rice Mother, a family saga. This chapter examines the notion of transgenerational trauma and postmemory, and how trauma can be transmitted through silences from one generation to the next. It pays close attention to the different forms of media used in the transmission of trauma, and also discusses the issue of replacement children who are born after traumatic loss.

Senchimentaru na tabi fuyu no tabi or Sentimental Journey/Winter Journey, a photobook created and published by photographer Araki Nobuyoshi in 1991, documented two highly personal events of the photographer's life. The first section consists of twenty-two images of Araki's 1971 honeymoon with his wife Yōko Aoki, while the second section features ninety-one images and an essay documenting the last six months of Yōko's life in 1989-90. This thesis measures SJ/WJ against a Japanese literary tradition invoked by Araki in his opening manifesto: the shishōsetsu. A genre of writing from the early 1900's that read like a confessional or personal diary, the shishōsetsu was regarded as a `true' story insofar as it revealed a totally transparent `author' within a totally transparent `text.' Given these criteria, this thesis determines the success of Araki's SJ/WJ as a true-to-life autobiography.

Na história japonesa, o período Meiji (1868-1912) é conhecido como aquele da transição entre a nação pré-moderna, governada por xoguns e socialmente hierarquizada, para a nação moderna, dotada deconstituição e propiciadora demaior cidadania. Esta transição, esta mudança de paradigma, pode serobservada em várias instâncias. No caso específico da cultura eliteratura, passou-se para uma etapa de contato intenso com o Ocidente, suas formas culturais e artísticas. Assim, pintura, escultura e música foram renovadas face ao novo impacto. Com a literatura não seria diferente: a tradição do romance europeu irrompe com força na cena das letras japonesas e propiciou um rearranjo de gêneros, formas e temas. Pretendemos aqui analisar alguns desses deslocamentos, tendo em vista, sempre, o ponto de partida, ou seja, trata-se de uma análise histórica da renovação do fazer literário. Para tanto, abordamos primeiramente a situação da entrada da literatura europeia no Japão através da tradução. Esse passo foi de fundamental importância para a formação da literatura moderna japonesa, pois neste momento foram estabelecidas direções quanto ao tom e à dicção da nova prosa de ficção, bem como sua relação para com a literatura autóctone japonesa (ou seja, a chamada literatura clássica). Em um segundo momento, procuramos demonstrar o surgimento do narrador enquanto função textual dotexto, por oposição ao autor explícito da ficção pré-moderna japonesa. O estabelecimento de um narrador neutro consiste em uma das etapas mais importantes da reforma da ficção que pretendemos abordar. Procuramos detalhar com exemplos essa transformação. Por fim, detivemo-nos sobre o romanceUkigumo(1887), de Futabatei Shimei (1864-1909), como exemplo de romance criado durante o período desta reforma literária. Procuramos mostrar as hesitações de seu autor quanto ao papel do narrador e ao encaminhamento danarrativa. Posicionar a obra em seu contexto, é uma etapa importante para fundamentar a interpretação aqui apresentada em relação à especificidade do romance Ukigumo.
In Japanese history, the Meiji period (1868-1912) is known as one of transition between the pre-modern nation, governed by shoguns and a tigh social hierarquy,and a modern State, endowed with a Constitution and greater citizenship. This change of paradingsignals that all spheres were affected during this transition. In the case of culture and literature, there began anew, intense exchange with the Western world and its artistic and cultural forms. Thus, painting, sculputeand music were reformed and renewed due to the new impact. Regarding literature it was no different: the tradition of the European novel breaks the scene of Japanese letters, causing a new arrangement of genres, forms and themes. We intend to analyse heresome of these displacements and shifts, always bearing in mind their departing point. That is to say, this is an historical approach to the renewal of Japanese literature. In order to do so, we shall first study the importation of European fiction to Japan through the means of translation. This is a step of fundamental importance in the formation of modern Japanese literature, since it established directionsas to tone and diction of the new fiction, as well as its relation to the native tradition (that isto say, to the so-called classical literature). Secondly, we will try to demostrate the emergence of the narrator as a textual function of the narrative, opposed to the traditional explicit author of pre-modern fiction. The establishment of a neutral narrator is the most important step in the reform offiction we here present. We tried to offerdetailed examples of this transformation. Lastly, we focusedon the novel Ukigumo(1887), by Futabatei Shimei (1864-1909) as an example of work created during this period of reform. We tried to show the authors hesitation regarding the role of the narrator as well as the development of plot. We also tried, as much as possible, to insert the work in its historical context, so as to lead to a better understanding of its structure and our interpretation of it.

Literary texts have played an essential role in the media environment of digital games since the 1970s. Giovanni Tagliamonte and Yaochong Yang explore the persistence of this close relationship in contemporary culture. The two contributions review the popular sub-genre of Isekai novels-their typical elements, their production cycles, their game logic, and protocological character-as well as two game adaptations of Isekai novels. They argue that Isekai novels, by adapting elements of Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPG), are critical paratextualizations of game systems while the adaptations of these novels back into games »end up undermining the essence of their original works-[Isekai novels] are critiques of systems but once adapted into systems they lose their respective critiques.« (»Isekai: Tracing Interactive Control in Non-Interactive Media.«)

Japanese and Korean are both predicate-final (OV) languages with relatively flexible constituent order. However, our analysis of parallel texts (Japanese novels and their Korean translations) demonstrates that the two languages differ in the exploitability of post-predicative position. Korean has a much lower frequency of final-appendage structures with clause-internal elements (especially adnominals and subject nominals) less likely to occur in post-predicative position. On the other hand, Korean shows a relatively higher proportion of vocative phrases in post-predicative position despite a lower frequency of final-appendage structures. The results reveal that Japanese exhibits a relatively higher degree of constructional entrenchment of final-appendage structures. In contrast, post-predicative position in Korean is rather restrictive, more limited to clause-external elements than to clause-internal ones.

The turtle (kame) is of great importance in East Asian culture and it is seen as a supernatural creature. In Japanese literature, we can find examples of the turtle in works dating back to the Nara period, such as Tangokuni fudoki and Nihonshoki. Just like the crane, the turtle is a symbol of longevity. However, from the Kamakura period a new and unique interpretation of the turtle as the “singing/crying turtle” makes its appearance. Of this topos, known as kame naku, we can find only very few examples in literature until the Meiji era and the most known are the waka anthologies Shinsen waka rokujō and Fuboku wakashō, and Kyokutei Bakin’s kigo collection Haikai saijiki shiorigusa. However, from the beginning of the modern age, kame naku has been used by many poets as a kigo connected to spring and its frequency has hugely increased. After the war, it began to appear not only in poetry but also in novels and essays. The best known examples of this being Mishima Yukio’s short novel Chūsei, Uchida Hyakken’s essay Kame naku ya, Kawakami Hiromi’s work Oboreru. Using kame naku as a keyword, in this paper we will analyze the attitudes and approaches of modern and contemporary poets and novelists toward the topos.

In recent years, cool Japan anime, video games and manga have been recognized as important export-oriented merchandise in Japan. Another recent Japanese genre is light novels. Light novels are one of the genres of novels and construct a part of recent Japanese pop culture. In Japan recently, the anime, manga and live-action films have been adapted from the original light novels. Light novels were chiefly read by high and junior-high school student previously, but the range of the readers has been expanding widely in recent years. However, light novels have not been statistically studied yet. In the present study, 533 titles of popular light novels published in 2004-2020 were investigated to clarify the trends in the genre.Numbers were counted for each of 129 items, data of published year, publisher, label, platform first appeared on, length of time from the first publication to the release of the anime adaptation, length of time from the first publication to the manga adaptation and so on for each year. And a 17 x 129 cross-tabulation table was constructed. Then it was analyzed by correspondence analysis and cluster analysis.The results of the correspondence analysis showed a three-dimensional solution with a cumulative contribution ratio of 64 %. Each year was plotted on the three-dimensional space, then cluster analysis was performed on the plots with Ward’s method. The results of the cluster analysis showed that the plots could be divided into four periods; 2004-005, 2006-2015, 2016-2017 and 2018-2020.The results showed that KADOKAWA’s labels were popular between 2004 and 2014, but the other publishers’ labels which collect novels appearing in individuals’ private home pages or posted on web-sites became popular in recent years. The most important part of the business strategy of light novels is mass-production, which means a large number of works and writers are needed. As such, it stands to reason that internet novel submission sites have become an important source for publishers.The results also showed that it only took one or two years to produce anime for many titles between 2006 and 2014, but in recent years, the period of time has increased to four years and the number of cases where no anime was produced has also increased. Additionally, manga based on the light novels tends to be published within one year. This suggests that the center of the multimedia strategy of light novels has shifted from anime to manga. Since the mid-2010s, tablet devices and e-comics applications have rapidly developed. This has enabled publishers to rapidly produce and publish manga based on the original light novels. Moreover, it now takes longer to produce anime, because the quality of frames and productions costs have increased. Therefore, anime studios tend to select an original work of light novel carefully, observing the sales of the e-manga adaptation.

If one has not read local English novels like The Garden of Evening Mists and The Night Tiger, one would never be able to imagine the wonders of locales depicted in these two books. One of the reasons the authors here want to visit a said destination is because of the way a certain place is pictured in narratives. Tan Twan Eng brings to life the beauty of Japanese gardens in Cameron Highlands, in the backdrop of postWorld War II while Yangsze Choo takes us into several small towns of Kinta Valley in the state of Perak in her beautifully woven tale of the superstitions and beliefs of the local people in Chinese folklore and myth in war torn Malaysia in the 1930s and after. Many of the places mentioned in these two novels should be considered places to visit by tourists local and international. Although these Malaysian novelists live away from Malaysia, they are clearly ambassadors of the Malaysian cultural and regional heritage. In this paper, a few of the places in the novel will be looked at as potential spots for the coming decade. The research questions considered here are i) what can be done to make written narratives the new trend to pave the way for Visit Malaysia destinations? ii) how could these narratives be promoted as guides to the history and culture of Malaysia? The significant destinations and the relevant cultural history of the regions will be discussed in-depth to come to a relevant conclusion.

This paper is about the Tanizaki Jun’ichirō’s (1886–1965) experience of creating a 1920–1950s Japanese woman image inspired by the urban environment of Yokohama — the city as a mirror of the Western culture in Japan. The writer who had combined the images of European and Oriental women in order to obtain the architype of new Japanese woman in his early works no longer wanted to do this. He began to portray a new-age woman — his new ideal, which writer observed in Hollywood movies. Tanizaki Jun’ichirō anticipated the appearance of Modan gāru on the Japanese stage, women who became objects of public attention because they followed Western fashion trends and lifestyle. Precisely this kind of woman occupied Tanizaki’s mind for the first half of the 1920s. The novel Blue Flower (Aoi hana, 青い花, 1921) was the first Tanizaki Jun’ichirō’s work, in which we meet the modan garu, a new type of Japanese woman of the first half of the XX c. In this novel, he presents the West as a source of femininity, and western attributes now as being able to change both the exterior and interior of a human. Blue Flower is the result of Tanizaki Jun’ichirō’s research of these new women in his quest for their physical perfection.

My Travel Notes of Western Regions Journey describe in detail four journeys of famous Japanese novelist Inoue Yasushi to East Turkestan in 1977–1980. The writer, who is passionate about history of China and its Western regions, visited north-western China as part of a group of Japanese cultural figures against the backdrop of improving Japanese-Chinese relations. The travelogue develops millennial diary tradition of Japanese literature and, according to improved model of describing China in travelogues that developed after Meiji Restoration, demonstrates true state of affairs in changed China, but the close attention is paid to China’s ancient past. The paper examines both application of this principle and complex of representations and images that constitutes an intellectual picture and spatial-temporal unity of region, which were built from the point of view of highly educated Japanese intellectual.

The paper deals with analysis of concept of history of nomadic civilization in the steppes of Mongolia, appeared in the essays by prominent Japanese novelist Shiba Ryotaro. This approach made great impact towards the popular view of Asian and Eurasian history among Japanese readers. The author aims to identify, analyze and present main ideas of Shiba’s concept of history of nomadic civilization in Mongolia and Great Steppe. Sources for analysis of these ideas are two essays and travel notes by novelist, Mongolian Travel Notes (1974) and Steppe Notes (1992). The article shows ties between civilizational approach of A. Toynbee and concept by Shiba Ryotaro in relation to nomadic civilizations and demonstrates essential features of its development. Texts by Shiba Ryotaro present a new understanding of nature of Asia within the Japanese social and historical thought in the post-war period.
