Abstract This study evaluates occurrence of the heavy rains at urban areas on the example of Brno agglomeration. Extreme precipitation events are studied with the help of 1-minute records from three urban sites in the Brno and one site in the rural region. Additionally data from nine Hellmann rain gauges from Brno and surroundings were used. The event of torrential rains was evaluated according to Wussow’s method. The study found that torrential rains occurred in Brno in the season from April to November. The fifteen-year long observation of the phenomenon at Brno-Žabovřesky station shows varying frequency of torrential rainfall - from none in 2007 to four in 2004 and 2010. The most extremal was catastrophic downpour on July 15, 2009 when precipitation sum reached total up to 42.7 mm in 52 minutes and the maximal rainfall intensity was 4.1 mm/min. This phenomenon occurs only one day after downpour on July 14, 2009. The overall number of torrential episodes is not very high, but it is compensated by the fact that they can repeat in a relatively short period of time, due to specific synoptic conditions. Maximum rainfall intensity during torrential rains reaches values of about 3 mm / min and the average proportion of torrential rain in the daily precipitation sum is around 70%. The phenomenon of heavy rains represents a significant problem for densely populated urban areas because such extreme rainfall has a large impact on the hydrological system of cities.

Abstract The subject of this paper is the analysis of consumer behaviour in the organic market, focused on the behavior of students from Brno. Our study brings information which can potentially be used for further research and will also be useful for organizations with a practical interest in the production sale and distribution of organic food. To investigate the influence of the various factors was used the extended model of Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). In the current concept, there is no research in the Czech Republic that would apply the approach of Yadav and Pathak (2016) to examine of consumer behaviour on the sample of students, i.e. young Czech generations who are a potential target group. The theoretical part deals with the concept of consumer behaviour, based on the findings of the latest studies, dealing with this topic. In the practical part, the own research is presented, realized on a sample of 403 young consumers, studying in the second largest city of the Czech Republic, the city of Brno. In the Czech Republic, the young consumer is influenced mainly by factors such as personal attitude and subjective norms. Limitations of this study are the fact that in our questionnaire we were interested in how the consumer viewed the purchase of organic food in general and not how they view the purchase of individual organic products and that the research may be limited by the fact that the questionnaire was aimed solely at the younger generation of consumers studying in Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic. The behaviour of the younger generation has received little investigation, and in the Czech Republic, there is a lack of research on the behaviour of this sector.

Master´s thesis adresses the issue of public spaces of inner city of Brno. These spaces have good prerequisities to become attractive places for everyday use or for spending a good free time. These prerequsities include for example compact city structure, well defined public spaces, walking city distances, presence of public and commercial facilities and distinctive genius loci. But public spaces in these localities often do not fulfill their own potential and stay as average free space inbetween buildings. Thesis suggests a detailed system for categorisation of squares and streets in the inner city of Brno and examines the reasons for potential non-fulfillment on these typologies, it tries to find out the problems of public spaces and how they can be solved.

Since the beginning of the century, the European Union wants to catch up its lateness in the field of the Higher Education and in the research area. Through diverse programmes and new institutions it is trying to remedy to the problem. The establishment of the Bologna Process and the Erasmus mobility programme helped the Member States to find a solution. Concerning the mobility, most of the studies have a tendency to focus on the student mobility and its impact on the career of the young generation but very few are focused the teaching and research one. This case study aims at focusing on this type of mobility, the one of the academics, and see what are the motivations and the outcomes for the academics of the Faculty of Social Sciences of Prague and Brno. Finally this study based on the respondents' answers and on the previous studies shows us that there was not a big evolution made on the side of the academic institutions. The fifth chapter discusses policies and planning of accessible public space. The text works with the approaches of universal design and tactical urbanism and applies them to concrete practical examples. It demonstrates the limits of various space designs and introduces their possible complementarity with the aim to give an overview of practical examples of municipal efforts to make public space accessible. The data collected via semi-structured interviews and the analysis of conceptional and strategic municipal documents in the Czech Republic identified cities (Brno, Olomouc, Pardubice a Praha), which have already institutionalized the agenda of barrier-free space. These cities can be placed on a timescale corresponding to subsequent phases of this institutionalization, with Olomouc being at front (after 18 years of experience with accessibility policies) and Brno, which started to remove barriers systematically only in 2017, at the opposite side. Urban municipalities use diverse tools and define their goals for in strategies and conceptions that serve as guides for multiple working groups. Some of these groups have their own budgets, in which European and state support can be used. The working groups usually belong under one of three types based on their activities: the actual barrier-removing work, conceptional and methodic work and educational work. Most visible results are usually found in public transport (public transport stops, crossings, lowering sidewalk and traffic island curbs, etc.). Strategic and systematic effort in removing barriers, which has been carried out by these four cities, can undoubtedly be an inspiration for other municipalities.

This chapter deals with the basic features of financial law in the Czech Republic. The authors present Czech financial law using the branch-creating criteria: a specific object of legal regulation, a specific method of regulation, a system coherence of financial law norms, and a social acceptance. As the legal relationships regulated by the financial law are very diverse, the Brno legal school uses two groups of these relationships. The fiscal part of financial law deals with the legal relationships created, implemented, and expired in the process of creating, distribution, and use of public monetary funds. It covers tax law, budgetary law, and public subsidies law. The non-fiscal part of financial law deals with the legal relationships created, implemented, and expired in connection with ensuring the functioning of the monetary and financial system. The non-fiscal part covers monetary and foreign exchange law, financial markets law, gaming law, hallmark law, and public procurement law.

The sharing economy is a topic of the current discussion. Platforms like Airbnb or Uber are often criticized for exploiting the positive connotations of the word ‘sharing’ to achieve financial gain. On the other hand, sharing has always been present in society, especially in families or closely related communities, where it was a fundamental form of asset redistribution. There is a third form of sharing that is often neglected. In this chapter, I focus on true sharing in the form of initiatives that are motivated by social, environmental, or other goals. I will present several sharing initiatives that operate in Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic. I will mainly focus on relational geography to show how communities are able to access resources and further control their flow through networks. Based on semi-structured interviews and ethnographic fieldwork, I will clarify how initiatives of true sharing manage and redistribute resources such as food, clothes, books, and houseplants. Resource management can highlight the materiality of true sharing as social practice, and also the transformational potential of this type of sharing. I place the whole theme in the broader context of a diversified and community-based economy as presented by Gibson-Graham (2006).

We have changed the method of teaching the subject Applied Chemistry at Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic. Instead of a classic lecture, elements of a flipped classroom method are used. We brought the curriculum closer to the STEM concept. Our text discusses our first experiences with this way of teaching. An interesting finding, among other things, is that students with different life experiences perceive this method of teaching differently. Older students, who already work as teachers at lower secondary school, appreciate it and perceive it clearly positively. On the contrary, younger students claim that the teaching was worse prepared.

Map reading is an important skill of the human population which varies from person to person depending on the age, education and many other circumstances. It is expected that some groups of adult population have higher skills in this area. Soldiers, architects, geography teachers and others belong to this group of people. The skills in reading paper maps are disappearing in current digital world. This is also observed in the case of students of the University of Defense in Brno. 228 students were tested in map reading and geographical knowledge of the Czech Republic to verify this fact. The examination of the map reading skills took place over a standard topographic map at a scale of 1 : 25 000 from the production of the Geographic Service of ACR. Testing of geographical knowledge of the Czech Republic was focused on drawing the map of district towns, rivers and geomorphological units of the Czech Republic. The results confirmed the initial assumptions about the decreasing level of these skills. In addition, there were also significant differences between individual groups of students caused mostly because of previous education as well as the currently studied specialization. The same testing was done on students of the Faculty of Education of Masaryk University in Brno to confirm these conclusions. This group of students achieved worse results in map reading, but on the other hand, they have better knowledge of the geography of the Czech Republic.

Dispersion areas are one of the essential elements determining the convenient coming and departure of buildings with a large number of users. However, in the legislation and normative base of the Czech Republic, they are a neglected element without clearly defined parameters. Although the legislation defines the term "dispersion area", it does not further specify it. Here again, the different environment of large and small cities in the Czech Republic is reflected. Individual large towns or cities, for example, Prague, Brno, Pilsen, and others, have developed methodologies for designing public spaces for their administrative territories. Dispersion areas can be included in these methodologies. Small towns do not have such regulations and are therefore dependent only on valid legislation, which is insufficient in this area. The university research project 02SVV22 entitled "Categorization and dimensional requirements of dispersion areas in the context of the type of buildings" was concerned with ascertaining the state of dispersion areas in front of selected types of buildings in nine small towns in the Czech Republic. The contribution reports on the course of local surveys and their results.

The need to adapt to climate change is obvious. The groundwater resources are in continuous decline, consequently, the surface water supplies are increasing in importance. How would the quantity of available water change in the future? How much water would we be able to store within the year to manage it during the dry seasons? Rainfall-runoff models enable us to simulate future changes in hydrological conditions based on climate projections. One of such tools is Runoff Prophet, the conceptual lumped model being developed at the Institute of Landscape Water Management at Brno University of Technology. It is used to simulate time series of monthly river flow in a catchment outlet without the need to describe the morphological characteristics of the catchment. Runoff Prophet produced good results of calibration and proved its suitability for conceptual hydrological modelling in variable hydrological conditions of the Czech Republic. The aim of the paper was to assess the possible impact of climate change on future inflow into Vír I. Reservoir, one of the drinking water resources for Brno, a city of 380 000 inhabitants. The recently developed software Runoff Prophet was used to simulate future river flow time series. The model was calibrated on the catchment of gauging station Dalečín on Svratka River as the reservoir inflow. Prognoses of future river flow were performed using climate scenarios prepared by Global Change Research Institute of Czech Academy of Sciences. These scenarios (RCP types) are based on the outcomes from different regional climate models of Euro-CORDEX initiative. Characteristics of possible future air temperature and precipitation in the basin were evaluated in terms of its impact on reservoir management. The results of hydrological modelling gave the perspective of expected changes in Vír I. inflow yield. The options of using Vír I. Reservoir as a drinking water supply for Brno in coming decades were assessed.

This paper looks at research on music teachers’ attitudes towards folk songs. The investigation of the Department of Music, Faculty of Education, Masaryk University in Brno began by looking at the situation in the Czech Republic and was subsequently extended to a broader European context. Our analysis compares the first results obtained in Hungary and the Netherlands, emphasizing the current state of cultural and social change and its impact on teaching folk songs in schools. In addition to the above, it also presents the current position of folklore in contemporary Hungarian and Dutch society.

Staff at the University of Defence in Brno, Czech Republic, designed and constructed a test cell for small gas turbine engines as detailed in GT2012-69419. Once construction was completed, the test cell was instrumented and put through a series of tests to confirm the design suitability, calibrate data acquisition channels, establish correction parameters for measurement values, and examine real operating conditions. This paper details the methodology of those tests with a focus on used equipment, noise emissions, air and gas flow and the associated impact on engine thrust. Lastly, measurement results are presented and compared with the design predictions.
