Italian neo-emigration in a religious context: a study in Germany Continuous emigration has always been a distinctive feature of Italy. In recent years, however, Italian emigrants have distinguished themselves both culturally and linguistically from the previous migratory flows of Italians. Despite this change, the spiritual and social assistance that the Italian Catholic Church gives to its fellow countrymen abroad is still ongoing. Furthermore, the Italian Catholic Church is particularly interested in the linguistic dimensions, given the fact that its mission is carried out through language and its creed is based on words. This paper aims to identify the awareness of the Italian Church in Germany about the social, linguistic and cultural changes brought about by the new emigration flows from Italy, presenting the results of a survey conducted through interviews and participant observations in two cities in Germany, a country which, for at least three years, has been in second place both in terms of the number of new arrival of Italians and the ones already emigrated.

This essay aims to analyze how and where English methods of word formation participates in Italian word formation. Results are achieved by examining a specific corpus made up of articles taken from the first pages of La Stampa and written during the first ten days of January in 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010. The analysis reveals how important English is in Italian word formation: new Italian words are be formed by adding prefixes and suffixes to an English word or by combining words. In our opinion, the typical English sequence ‘Dnte+Dnto’ is one of the most significant methods of Italian word formation and it shows how English influences Italian so far.

Very little is known about Domenico De Vivo (1839-1897). He was a disciple of the Italian linguist Giacomo Lignana and worked as a professor of Russian and English language at the Asiatic College in Naples from 1868 to 1870, and then as an Italian language lecturer at the universities of Dorpat and Odessa in the Russian Empire from 1879 until his death in 1897. De Vivo championed his ideas on language teaching and learning in his books Grammatica della lingua russa [Russian Grammar for Italians] (Dorpat, 1882) and Prakticheskoe rukovodstvo dlya izucheniya ital’yanskogo yazyka [A Practical Guide to Learning Italian] (Odessa, 1886; Odessa, 1890), and in his Dizionario Italiano-Russo. Slovar’ ital’yansko-russkiy [Italian-Russian Dictionary] (Odessa 1894). The purpose of this article is to examine De Vivo’s life and works, which represent the first recorded attempt – in De Vivo’s own words – “to promote Russian language learning in Italy and Italian language learning in Russia.”

Modality expresses high probability and total degree through boosters (Halliday 1985,Holmes 1990). Through them, writers reinforce statements with the assurance of reliableknowledge (cf. Hyland 1998b). This study compares the usage of boosting emphasizers (e.g. certainly) and intensifiers (e.g. completely) (cf. Quirk et al. 1985) and their orientation and manifestation (cf. Halliday & Matthiessen 2014) in Albanian and Italian student academic writings in L1 and English as an L2. I compiled an Italian and an Italian English corpus (around 3 million words each) as well as an Albanian corpus (around 2.2 million words) and Albanian English one (around 700,000 words). The corpora are comparable in terms of genre, disciplinary domain, gender and the division of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ sciences. Since very little research has been conducted on academic writing in Albania (Toska 2015), it is essential to initiate research in this field. The results showed that boosters were significantly favored in Italian and Italian English and less favored in Albanian. Conclusively, Italians show more commitment than Albanians.

Palabras clave: intertextualidad, traducción, doblaje, literatura infantil y juvenil Abstract The aim of the present paper is to analyse the intertextuality in the field of Translation of Children’s Literature and specially in Audiovisual Translation. We analyse the presence of intertextual elements in the Spanish animated film Donkey Xote (José Pozo, 2007) and in the Italian dubbing. After the identification of the difficulties and the strategies inside the Translation of the so called “audiovisual intertextuality” (Martínez Sierra, 2010; Chaume, 2012), we propose some intertextual elements introduced in the Italian version in order to capture the interest of an adult audience. In others words, the Italian dubbing shows particular allusions regarding American and Italian films that were conceived to create humour. The ‘Bel Paese’: it’s not just cheese! Italianisms in the language of international food marketing This survey report aims at analysing the use of Italianisms in advertising campaigns (TV and web commercials, social media ads, press) conceived for the foreign markets by Italian companies particularly renowned in the food sector. The main objective of the survey was to analyse from a linguistic point of view the words (or expressions) of Italian origin ( also dialectal/regional) used by the major brands of the sector in their advertising campaigns to promote their products as iconic of the ‘true’ Italian character. The idea of Italianness is conveyed through images, landscapes, music, but also with the use of Italianisms in advertising slogans. In our case-study, culinary terms in particular evoke the idea of ‘made in Italy’ and of the ‘Italian way of life’. The success of the Italian cuisine all over the world, as promoted in food marketing campaigns (designed for international markets), reinforces and spreads in today’s globalised world the conviction of the existence of a special bond linking the words Italy and Italian to something ‘beautiful’ and ‘good’. This study therefore analyses the linguistic and communicative strategies used to promote Italian food products, ranging from more ‘identity’ choices, as in the case of the Barilla adverts for the American market, to adverts that in a certain sense prefer to “speak” the language of foreign markets. In the area of social media advertising, the use of a double social profile is frequent, one particularly aimed at the national market, the other meant for an international market; often, however, it is not a mere translation of the content from Italian into English or vice versa. The scheduling and choice of posts, their length and even the so-called tone of voice may vary, as well as the presence or absence of Italianisms. This report also provides comments and observations on (linguistically) diversified packaging for the Italian and foreign markets.

Words of Italian origin in the Hungarian language: brief history of the issue and inclusion of material in the OIM project It is a generally known fact that many words of Italian origin has been entered in many European languages, so in Hungarian too: this language is used in the Carpathian Basin from the end of the X century and between Italy and Hungary the political-economic-cultural relations (thanks of the relatively little geographical distance, too) were and are, in all times, very lively and close. The presence of italianismi in the Hungarian language in the important comparative lexical project named OIM, promoved by the Accademia della Crusca in Florence, gives evidence, on the one hand, from the many hundreds of (in many cases polysemous) words of Italian origin in the Hungarian language, and on the other, from the great number of studies describing the argument in generally and many concrete cases, too. In this short summary are briefly treated the most important linguistic studies about single Italian words “imported” in the Hungarian language (par. 3.) and there are proposed some point of views and criteria, too (par. 4), to control and to make more homogeneous the semantic descriptions elaborated by the linguists - experts of the languages, included in the OIM-project.

Cross-linguistic similarities and differences in early lexical and grammatical development are reported for 1001 English-speaking children and 386 Italian-speaking children between 1;6 and 2;6. Parents completed the English or Italian versions of the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory: Words and Sentences, a parent report instrument that provides information about vocabulary size, vocabulary composition and grammatical complexity across this age range. The onset and subsequent growth of nouns, predicates, function words and social terms proved to be quite similar in both languages. No support was found for the prediction that verbs would emerge earlier in Italian, although Italians did produce a higher proportion of social terms, and there were small but intriguing differences in the shape of the growth curve for grammatical function words. A strikingly similar nonlinear relationship between grammatical complexity and vocabulary size was observed in both languages, and examination of the order in which function words are acquired also yielded more similarities than differences. However, a comparison of the longest sentences reported for a subset of children demonstrates large cross-linguistic differences in the amount of morphology that has been acquired in children matched for vocabulary size. Discussion revolves around the interplay between language-specific variations in the input to young children, and universal cognitive and social constraints on language development.

The present work focuses on the organization of the mental lexicon in native and non-native speakers and aims at investigating whether words are connected in the mind in terms of morphological criteria, i.e., through a network of associations establishing when a co-occurrence of form and meaning is found. Psycholinguistic research on native lexical access has demonstrated that morphology indeed underlies the organization of the mental lexicon, even though controversies about the locus of this level of organization remain. On the other hand, research in the field of second language acquisition has only recently turned to investigate such issues and its findings so far have been controversial. Specifically, the debate centers on whether native and non-native speakers share the same processing systems. According to recent proposals (Heyer & Clahsen 2015), this would not be the case and L2 processing would be more affected by formal rather than morphological criteria. In this light, the present work is aimed at verifying the impact of formal characteristics in native and non-native lexical access focusing on the processing of formally transparent versus non-transparent words in Italian

The present research investigates neighbourhood size and neighbourhood frequency effects in recognition of Italian written words. Neighbourhood size is the number of words that may be generated by changing one letter of the target word, preserving letter positions; neighbourhood frequency refers to the relationship between the frequencies of neighbours and the frequency of the stimulus word (Grainger, O’Regan, Jacobs & Segui, 1989). By extending the studies on Italian non words of Arduino & Burani (2004) and Mulatti, Peressotti & Job (2007) to Italian five-letter words, four experiments were carried out in order to test the neighbourhood size and the neighbourhood frequency effects, as well as the possible interaction between them. We have used, as experimental tasks, the simple lexical decision, the word and nonword naming and the lexical decision with unmasked orthographic priming.[edited by author]

Children of Italian immigrants in Montreal are in contact with many languages and kinds of speech. French and English are used publicly, formal Italian is studied in heritage classes, a dialect of the family's region of origin is used at home, and a kind of koine is frequently used in interactions with other Italian immigrants. The contact of these languages produces various kinds of interferences. These lead a child to make errors when he tries to use the Standard Italian code. In this research, children's compositions are examined for errors which in turn are analysed and classified. The causes of these errors are investigated and statistics are presented to indicate the frequency of errors or the power of various causes.
An effort is made to show all the different errors and interferences that occur, and to discover a pattern of their causes. The data put forth might eventually serve as a base for further studies on the pedagogical prevention or correction of errors in the teaching of Standard Italian as adapted to the specific situation in Montreal.

Abstract. Title: Breastfeeding: validation of a reduced Breastfeeding Assessment Score (BAS) in a group of Italian women Aim and objective. To assess the accuracy of a reduced Breastfeeding Assessment Score (BAS) in a group of Italian women; the reduced BAS considers only 5 of the 8 original BAS items studied, those not indicating a pathology. Background. The WHO and many Professional Organizations recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life because of its many benefits for mother and child. A prognostic approach that identifies mothers at increased risk of early breastfeeding cessation is needed in order to provide preventive support. The BAS, elaborated in Kansas, is useful to this approach. Design. This is a descriptive, prospective study. This study involves two Italian hospitals. Method. We included healthy Italian mothers who gave birth from July 7, 2008 to January 15, 2009. The exclusion criteria on the convenience sample were: non-Italian nationality, birth under 36 wks and twin birth. The authors calculated a reduced BAS (“reduced” because the original 8 items studied by Hall, were reduced to 5) 48 hours after birth. After 4 weeks a structured follow-up telephone interview was carried out: the primary outcome was breastfeeding cessation (including mixed feeding). Results. We recruited 386 women, with 6 lost during follow-up. Out of 380 women, 127 (33.4%) stopped breastfeeding. With a cut off point of 8, the reduced BAS sensitivity was 52.0%, which increased to 77.9% by using a cut-off point of 9. We also calculated a modified BAS with different age categories, which is adequate based on the Italian situation: in this case sensitivity was 70.1%. This study suggests that a reduced BAS with a different cut-off point or modified with a different age classification is useful in identifying Italian mothers who will discontinue breastfeeding, as in both cases sensitivity does increase. Relevance to clinical practice. Italian midwives could use this modified BAS to identify mothers at increased risk of early breastfeeding cessation needing special support.

In the paper we will analyze the Italian localization of the first 5 chapters of the videogame The Last of Us. We will also offer alternative translations and will correct the localization mistakes. The paper consists of five chapters, introduction and conclusion. Each of the chapters represents a category of the revised translation: done badly, omitted translations, done well, could be improved, wrong register or wrong swear words translations. We will observe and analyze the Italian localization of the first five chapters of the videogame and propose the alternatives in the cases of errors and ambiguities, as well as highlight well done translations that reflect the differences between English and Italian grammar, syntax and semantics. The revised parts of the localization primarily include the translation of the subtitles and the artifacts (written documents, not voiced) within the game. The dubbing and the lip sync are not analyzed, unless they influence the translation in one way or another. The orthography and punctuation of the subtitles are kept the same in the thesis as they are in the game. The swear words will be fully spelled for transparency. In the conclusion we will close with the state of the Italian localization of videogames in general and of this one in particular.

Tycz, Katherine Marie. "Material prayers : the use of text in early modern Italian domestic devotions". Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/276240.

Resumo:
While scholarship often focuses on how early modern Italians used images in their devotions, particularly in the post-Tridentine era, little attention has been placed upon how laypeople engaged with devotional text during times of prayer and in their everyday lives. Studies of early modern devotional texts have explored their literary content, investigated their censorship by the Church, or concentrated upon an elite readership. This thesis, instead, investigates how ordinary devotees interacted with holy words in their material form, which I have termed ‘material prayers’. Since this thesis developed under the aegis of the interdisciplinary research project, Domestic Devotions: The Place of Piety in the Italian Renaissance Home, 1400-1600, it focuses primarily on engagement with these material prayers in domestic spaces. Using an interdisciplinary approach drawing from material culture studies, literary history, social and cultural history, and art history, it brings together objects, images and archival sources to illuminate how devotees from across the socio-economic and literacy spectrums accessed and employed devotional text in their prayers and daily life. From holy words, Biblical excerpts, and prayers to textual symbols like the Sacred Monogram of the Name of Jesus, this thesis explores how and why these material prayers were employed for spiritual, apotropaic and intercessory purposes. It analyses material prayers not only in traditional textual formats (printed books and manuscripts), but also those that were printed on single-sheets of paper, inscribed on jewellery, or etched into the structure of the home. To convey how devotees engaged with and relied upon these material prayers, it considers a variety of inscribed objects, including those sanctioned by the Church as well as those which might be questioned or deemed ‘superstitious’ by ecclesiastical authorities. Sermons, Inquisition trial records, and other archival documents have been consulted to further illuminate the material evidence. The first part of the thesis, ‘On the Body’, considers the how devotees came into personal contact with texts by wearing prayers on their bodies. It examines a range of objects including prayers with protective properties, known as brevi, that were meant to be sealed in a pouch and worn around the neck, and more luxurious items of physical adornment inscribed with devotional and apotropaic text, such as necklaces and rings. The second part of the thesis enters the home to explore how the spaces people inhabited and the objects that populated their homes were decorated with material prayers. ‘In the Home’ begins with texts inscribed over the entryways of early modern Italian homes, and then considers how devotees decorated their walls with holy words and how the objects of devotion and household life were imbued with religious significance through the addition of pious inscriptions. By analysing these personal objects and the textual domestic sphere, this thesis argues that these material prayers cut across socio-economic classes, genders, and ages to embody quotidian moments of domestic devotion as well as moments of fear, anxiety and change.

Gochin, Lara Shantal. "Maria Messina : her works". Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/14600.

Includes bibliographical references.
In this thesis I examine the work of the tum-of-the century Sicilian writer, Maria Messina (1887-1944). Relatively prolific, she received attention from some of the major critics of her day. But her works were forgotten after her death until the early 1970s. Messina's works are significant for their contribution to the understanding of both women's literature and the position of the woman in a patriarchal society during the period of Fascist control of Italy. Although there is growing interest in Messina's works, no full-length study exists which combines a general overview of her writings in their historical and cultural context with an accurate biographical history, which also includes unpublished and rare documents by and on Messina. This thesis fills this gap. All available criticism of Messina's writings, both from the early Twentieth century and from the last twenty years has been taken into account. This comprises the overlooked and forgotten reviews from journals and newspapers as well as the recent German and American ones. The corpus of the known works by Messina has been increased by tracing unknown publications in literary journals of the 1910s and 1920s. Messina's known published correspondence has been increased by the discovery of her unpublished letters to Alessio DiGiovanni, which span the years 1910-40, and those to Enrico Bemporad. The former provide new knowledge of her life, cultural formation and social interaction. The latter serve as documents for her publishing history and her private life in general. A more historically accurate picture of Messina's life and work can now be formed, not only from the unpublished letters but also from the documents and certificates obtained from archives and municipal records. On the strength of internal and external evidence, not previously taken into account, a detailed biography and personality sketch of Messina and an assessment of her cultural and literary formation have now been provided. The literary analysis examined Messina's short stories and novels on a separate basis, while taking into account certain themes which were central to both genres. Rediscovered short stories were found to contribute greatly to a balanced understanding of Messina's subject matter: the tormented mother-child relationship, the dichotomy between greed and need, the ambivalent stance towards love. The analysis of the novels also revealed new insight into Messina's attitude towards the female condition within society. The present feminist-oriented criticism on Messina has tended to overlook her ambiguous representation of the career-woman. Nor has it been aware of the progressive weakening and elimination of the authoritative male figure. These aspects have been seen to be the externalisation of Messina's attitude towards Fascism. In her historical context, on one level Messina appears to accept and transmit Fascism's idealisation of the wife and mother and the glorification of the rural and traditional ways of life. On another level she denounces Fascist doctrine by ridiculing its cardinal symbol of the virile male. While considering Messina's writings as important literary and sociological documents of the condition of the woman in a critical historical moment, the analysis of the text is not oriented from the sole perspective of feminist criticism, which would have been too restrictive. It is instead conducted from a general critical perspective, moving from the texts themselves in order to assess their structural, thematic, stylistic and symbolic components. Research was carried out in the principal libraries of Italy and those in which Messina resided - Rome, Florence, Urbino, Naples, Palermo, Catania, Pistoia - for published and unpublished material written on and by Messina. Searches for biographical information and documents were carried out in all the centres in which Messina lived. Family members and descendents of her friends were contacted. The material obtained was used to compile a biographical history and analyses of her writings.

Modern linguistics is currently replete with competing theories, all with differing goals and intentions. This is not an altogether desirable situation. The aim of this thesis is to develop one of these theories, namely Word Grammar (Hudson 1984a), with this in mind. After an exposition of the theory, which should leave the reader with a clearer idea of the workings of the theory of Word Grammar, I will be concerned to put the intuitions behind the theory on as formal a footing as possible. This will involve the development of yet another formalism. However, this formalisation will involve the use of standard techniques. Extensions to the grammar, where necessary, shall be made with devices now current in the field such as Unification. In such a way, I hope to bring Word Grammar more into line with other formalisms, thus aiding a convergence rather than a divergence of theories. As part of the test for this new formalism it will then be applied to the problem of clitic placement in Italian.

Perceptual evidence is provided in favour of the non-syllabicity of word-final vocalic elements in consonant-final nonce words in Italian. These are optionally present after words ending in consonants, and their syllabicity status is debatable. In the experiment, speakers listened to stimuli of nonce words presenting variable duration of word-final schwas and judged whether the stimuli were monosyllabic or disyllabic. The results strongly suggest that speakers of Veneto Italian do not phonologically distinguish between nonce words that present a word-final schwa and those that do not. In fact, stimuli were generally judged as monosyllabic. The results of the study support previous research stating that word-final schwas in Italian are non-syllabic, phonetic vowels.

This paper focuses its attention on the presence of deonyms – in this case, new words derived from the surnames of foreign heads of state – in presentday journalistic Italian language. The research was conducted by analyzing the historical archive of two of the most relevant newspapers in Italy: la Repubblica and La Stampa. The purpose is to emphasize the main different semantic nuances of the words consisting of politicians’ surnames and Italian suffixes and to demonstrate the language contacts between Italian and other languages. As it can easily be guessed, most of the words investigated in this study were derived from names of American presidents as a result of the influence of American politics on the Italian system.

While it is true that Italian brand names traditionally included Italian as the prevalent language, nowadays we find other languages in the formation of Italian commercial names. As for the use of foreign linguistic material, the increasing spread of English in commercial names is due to the process of globalization. In fact, in addition to English, other languages are employed in hybrid irregular neologisms, in which words or morphemes belonging to different languages are connected. Our linguistic analysis will enable us to trace the boundaries of the multicultural dimension of the Italian brands of companies that make mountaineering products, collected in a database of 2000 items.

Resumo:
The new theoretical view of well-being considers happiness not only as “feeling good” psychologically but, in a wider perspective, as an optimal experience in human functioning. In the last years research has examined the trajectory of psychological well-being (PWB) over the lifespan, in particular during different life transition period, and its relationship with psychological health. Few studies specifically focused on emerging adulthood, a life stage characterized by many developmental challenges. As conceived by Ryff’s model of PWB, it is a complex and multifaced construct with different dimensions. The aims of this paper were to explore the PWB dimensions in a specific population of Italian emerging adults and to analyse the link between the psychological well-being and internalizing emotional difficulties. Findings showed in Italian EA higher scores in specific dimensions of PWB such as personal growth and purpose in life, and lower scores in self-acceptance and environmental mastery. Moreover, results highlighted negative relationships between all PWB dimensions with internalizing difficulties. This study suggests the importance of exploring the specificities of PWB both in clinical and health contexts in order to promote more tailored interventions specifically aimed for internalizing difficulties. KEY WORDS: Psychological well-being, happiness, internalizing difficulties, emotional difficulties, emerging adulthood.

Sign Language is a medium of communication for many disabled people. This real-time Sign Language Recognition (SLR) system is developed to identify the words of American Sign Language (ASL) in English and translate them into 5 spoken languages (Mandarin, Spanish, French, Italian, and Indonesian). Combining the study of facial expression with the recognition of Sign Language is an attempt to understand the emotions of the signer. Mediapipe and LSTM with a Dense network are used to extract the features and classify the signs respectively. The FER2013 data set was used to train the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to identify emotions. The system was able to recognize 10 words of ASL with an accuracy of 86.33% and translate them into 5 different languages. 4 emotions were also recognized with an accuracy of 73.62%.

In this paper we present an experiment carried out with BERT on a small number of Italian sentences taken from two domains: newspapers and poetry domain. They represent two levels of increasing difficulty in the possibility to predict the masked word that we intended to test. The experiment is organized on the hypothesis of increasing difficulty in predictability at the three levels of linguistic complexity that we intend to monitor: lexical, syntactic and semantic level. To test this hypothesis we alternate canonical and non-canonical versions of the same sentence before processing them with the same DL model. The result shows that DL models are highly sensitive to presence of non-canonical structures and to local non-literal meaning compositional effect. However, DL are also very sensitive to word frequency by predicting preferentially function vs content words, collocates vs infrequent word phrases. To measure differences in performance we created a linguistically based “predictability parameter” which is highly correlated with a cosine based classification but produces better distinctions between classes.

Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD), i.e., the task of assigning senses to words in context, has seen a surge of interest with the advent of neural models and a considerable increase in performance up to 80% F1 in English. However, when considering other languages, the availability of training data is limited, which hampers scaling WSD to many languages. To address this issue, we put forward MultiMirror, a sense projection approach for multilingual WSD based on a novel neural discriminative model for word alignment: given as input a pair of parallel sentences, our model -- trained with a low number of instances -- is capable of jointly aligning, at the same time, all source and target tokens with each other, surpassing its competitors across several language combinations. We demonstrate that projecting senses from English by leveraging the alignments produced by our model leads a simple mBERT-powered classifier to achieve a new state of the art on established WSD datasets in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Japanese. We release our software and all our datasets at https://github.com/SapienzaNLP/multimirror.
