Micro-vibration is an important factor that influences the imager orientation accu- racy and even deteriorates the quality of image of high-resolution satellite. To eliminate the influences of micro-vibration, a passive micro-vibration isolation method is proposed for reaction wheels (RWs) of satellite. At the same time, the launch environment is fully considered in the design of isolation system to guarantee the safety of both RWs. The isolation efficiency and orientation stability experiment results show that, without isolators, the peak value of the torque output reaches more than 10 Nm that is sharply depressed with isolation system operating mode. Without isolators, four clear peak values located at 10 Hz, 41 Hz, 47 Hz, 83 Hz are found in the orientation oscillation of RW. The random vibration experiments show that the maximal acceleration output 34.61 g is much lower than the RW design value 49 g which guarantees the safety of RW under harsh launch environment. The isolating efficiency is higher than 75% which is suitable for the requirement of the imager on-board the SDLT-1 satellite.

We present a modular approach to reinforcement learning (RL) in environments consisting of simpler components evolving in parallel. A monolithic view of such modular environments may be prohibitively large to learn, or may require unrealizable communication between the components in the form of a centralized controller. Our proposed approach is based on the assume-guarantee paradigm where the optimal control for the individual components is synthesized in isolation by making assumptions about the behaviors of neighboring components, and providing guarantees about their own behavior. We express these assume-guarantee contracts as regular languages and provide automatic translations to scalar rewards to be used in RL. By combining local probabilities of satisfaction for each component, we provide a lower bound on the probability of satisfaction of the complete system. By solving a Markov game for each component, RL can produce a controller for each component that maximizes this lower bound. The controller utilizes the information it receives through communication, observations, and any knowledge of a coarse model of other agents. We experimentally demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach on a variety of case studies.

In a microgrid, faults can lead to voltage instability, which can produce voltage sags, swells, or even a full collapse of the voltage. This may result in electrical equipment damage and interfere with the microgrid's operation. Faults can also produce safety risks including fire, explosion, or electrocution, which can endanger employees and harm equipment. By isolating or shutting down the system when a malfunction is found, the danger of harm or injury is reduced. The purpose of fault isolation and detection in a DC microgrid is to guarantee the microgrid's dependability and safety. The microgrid's flaws are found using fault detection and isolation (FDI) techniques, which are then used to isolate them so they won't influence other system components. Themicrogrid's downtime can be reduced by immediately identifying and isolating issues, ensuring a steady supply of electricity to the associated loads. Additionally, fault isolation and detection can stop problems from spreading to other system components, which can reduce the severity of the fault's harm. The purpose of this research is to identify and isolate faults that occur in DC microgrids, as well as to minimise their impact. In this project fault detection and isolation is properly done, for detecting a fault microprocessor is used which continuously monitor the values of current and voltage and for isolation of microgrid relay is used. We are successfully providing the circuit which detects the fault and isolate within the time which reduces the severity of fault and protect the healthy

Users who care about their data store it in databases, which (at least in principle) guarantee some form of transactional isolation. However, experience shows that many databases do not provide the isolation guarantees they claim. With the recent proliferation of new distributed databases, demand has grown for checkers that can, by generating client workloads and injecting faults, produce anomalies that witness a violation of a stated guarantee. An ideal checker would be sound (no false positives), efficient (polynomial in history length and concurrency), effective (finding violations in real databases), general (analyzing many patterns of transactions), and informative (justifying the presence of an anomaly with understandable counterexamples). Sadly, we are aware of no checkers that satisfy these goals. We present Elle: a novel checker which infers an Adya-style dependency graph between client-observed transactions. It does so by carefully selecting database objects and operations when generating histories, so as to ensure that the results of database reads reveal information about their version history. Elle can detect every anomaly in Adya et al's formalism (except for predicates), discriminate between them, and provide concise explanations of each. This paper makes the following contributions: we present Elle, demonstrate its soundness over specific datatypes, measure its efficiency against the current state of the art, and give evidence of its effectiveness via a case study of four real databases.

Seismic isolation systems have been used worldwide in bridge structures to reduce vibration and avoid collapse. The seismic isolator, damper, and Shock Transmission Unit (SUT) are generally adopted in the seismic design of bridges to improve their seismic safety with economic efficiency. There are several seismic isolation systems, such as Natural Rubber Bearing (NRB), Lead Rubber Bearing (LRB), and the Eradi-Quake System (EQS). EQS as a new technology is expected to effectively reduce both seismic force and displacement, but there is still some need to verify whether it might provide an economical and practical strategy for a bridge isolation system. Moreover, it is important to guarantee consistent performance of the isolators by quality control. A comparative evaluation of the basic properties of the available seismic isolators is thus necessary to achieve a balance between cost-effectiveness and the desired performance of the bridge subjected to extreme loading. Accordingly, in this study, the seismic response characteristics of the seismic isolation systems for bridges were investigated by conducting compressive test and compressive-shear test on NRB, LRB, and EQS.

To guarantee the safety and security of a real-time mobile system such as an intelligent transportation system, it is necessary to model and analyze its behaviors prior to actual development. In particular, the mobile objects in such systems must be isolated from each other so that they do not collide with each other. Since isolation means two or more mobile objects must not be located in the same place at the same time, a scheduling policy is required to control and coordinate the movement of such objects. However, traditional scheduling theories are based on task scheduling which is coarse-grained and cannot be directly used for fine-grained isolation controls. In this article, we first propose a fine-grained event-based formal model called a time dependency structure and use it to model and analyze real-time mobile systems. Next, an event-based schedule is defined and the composition of schedules is discussed. Then, we investigate the schedulability of isolation—that is, checking whether a given schedule ensures the isolation relationship among mobile objects or not. After that, we present an automation approach for scheduling generation to guarantee isolation controls in real-time mobile systems. Finally, case studies and simulation experiments demonstrate the usability and effectiveness of our approach.

The sequential ground motion effects on the dynamic responses of reinforced concrete containment (RCC) buildings with typical isolators are studied in this paper. Although the base isolation technique is developed to guarantee the security and integrity of RCC buildings under single earthquakes, seismic behavior of base-isolated RCC buildings under sequential ground motions is deficient. Hence, an ensemble of as-recorded sequential ground motions is employed to study the effect of including aftershocks on the seismic evaluation of base-isolated RCC buildings. The results indicate that base isolation can significantly attenuate the earthquake shaking of the RCC building under not only single earthquakes but also seismic sequences. It is also found that the adverse aftershock effect on the RCC can be reduced due to the base isolation applied to the RCC. More importantly, the study indicates that disregarding aftershocks can induce significant underestimation of the isolator displacement for base-isolated RCC buildings.

In virtualization, without proper scheduling and resource management, a load surge in one VM may unacceptably degrade the performance of another. Key requirement of IO performance virtualization is performance isolation. The current state of performance isolation for virtualization is more rudimentary. This paper presents a resources allocation framework, based on abstracted Xen IO model, that provides both throughput and fairness guarantees for network and storage device via 2-level resource control. The high-level tier makes guest domains perceive the states of the resource through resource control on sharing ring buffer. The high-level tier uses public/private token-bucket to support work-conserving and fairly distributes any spare bandwidth to the different VMs. The low-level tier is intended to meet the fairness guarantee, and computes token quantity value of each bucket by feedback-driven scheduler. The authors analytically and experimentally demonstrated that their framework is work-conserving, and achieves fairness, and high adaptability.

Abstract The eligibility for the minimum livelihood guarantee program in China is generally based on means testing, including a complicated income test and a household registration test. Even though the fiscal budget for this program steadily increased in the last two decades, the number of beneficiaries has decreased in both rural and urban areas since 2011. The recipients were stigmatized because their names are reported in the public domain and are known to their neighbors. Some beneficiaries tended to reduce social participation for fear of losing the eligibilities due to the stricter criteria or the stigma associated with receiving benefits. This paper examined the adverse impact of this welfare program on social isolation among Chinese middle-aged and older adults (n=8,447) using the panel data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study and the propensity score weighted difference-in-differences method (PSM-DID). The results present disparities between urban and rural older adults—The older program recipients in urban areas significantly reduced social participation by 20.53%, while the adverse impact was not statistically significant among rural recipients. Compared to older adults (aged 60 and above), middle-aged adults (aged between 45 and 60) were not socially isolated due to program enrollment in both rural and urban areas at the 95% confidence level. This paper for the first time addresses the causal relationship between program enrollment and the adverse impact of social isolation. It also alerts policymakers and local program administrators to protect older program recipients from stigma, sense of shame, and reduced social connection.

An optimized principal component analysis (PCA) framework is proposed to implement condition monitoring for sensors in a nuclear power plant (NPP) in this paper. Compared with the common PCA method in previous research, the PCA method in this paper is optimized at different modeling procedures, including data preprocessing stage, modeling parameter selection stage, and fault detection and isolation stage. Then, the model’s performance is greatly improved through these optimizations. Finally, sensor measurements from a real NPP are used to train the optimized PCA model in order to guarantee the credibility and reliability of the simulation results. Meanwhile, artificial faults are sequentially imposed to sensor measurements to estimate the fault detection and isolation ability of the proposed PCA model. Simulation results show that the optimized PCA model is capable of detecting and isolating the sensors regardless of whether they exhibit major or small failures. Meanwhile, the quantitative evaluation results also indicate that better performance can be obtained in the optimized PCA method compared with the common PCA method.

The vast majority of cancers are treatable when diagnosed early. However, due to the elusive trace and the limitation of traditional biopsies, most cancers have already spread widely and are at advanced stages when they are first diagnosed, causing ever-increasing mortality in the past decades. Hence, developing reliable methods for early detection and diagnosis of cancer is indispensable. Recently, extracellular vesicles (EVs), as circulating phospholipid vesicles secreted by cells, are found to play significant roles in the intercellular communication as well as the setup of tumor microenvironments and have been identified as one of the key factors in the next-generation technique for cancer diagnosis. However, EVs present in complex biofluids that contain various contaminations such as nonvesicle proteins and nonspecific EVs, resulting in the interference of screening for desired biomarkers. Therefore, applicable isolation and enrichment methods that guarantee scale-up of sample volume, purity, speed, yield, and tumor specificity are necessary. In this review, we introduce current technologies for EV separation and summarize biomarkers toward EV-based cancer liquid biopsy. In conclusion, a novel systematic isolation method that guarantees high purity, recovery rate, and tumor specificity is still missing. Besides that, a dual-model EV-based clinical trial system includes isolation and detection is a hot trend in the future due to efficient point-of-care needs. In addition, cancer-related biomarkers discovery and biomarker database establishment are essential objectives in the research field for diagnostic settings.

Transaction isolation is conventionally achieved by restricting access to the physical items in a database. To maximize performance, isolation functionality is often packaged with recovery, I/O, and data access methods in a monolithic transactional storage manager. While this design has historically afforded high performance in online transaction processing systems, industry trends indicate a growing need for a new approach in which intertwined components of the transactional storage manager are disaggregated into modular services. This paper presents a new method to modularize the isolation component. Our work builds on predicate locking, an isolation mechanism that enables this modularization by locking logical rather than physical items in a database. Predicate locking is rarely used as the core isolation mechanism because of its high theoretical complexity and perceived overhead. However, we show that this overhead can be substantially reduced in practice by optimizing for common predicate structures. We present DIBS, a transaction scheduler that employs our predicate locking optimizations to guarantee isolation as a modular service. We evaluate the performance of DIBS as the sole isolation mechanism in a data processing system. In this setting, DIBS scales up to 10.5 million transactions per second on a TATP workload. We also explore how DIBS can be applied to existing database systems to increase transaction throughput. DIBS reduces per-transaction file system writes by 90% on TATP in SQLite, resulting in a 3X improvement in throughput. Finally, DIBS reduces row contention on YCSB in MySQL, providing serializable isolation with a 1.4X improvement in throughput.

This study aims to better understand the seismic responses and isolation effect of a first-story, independent, column-top isolation structure with concrete frames. A series of shaking table tests and a numerical simulation were performed on a seven-story reinforced concrete–framed structure with first-story isolation, using rubber bearings. A non-isolated, structural model was used as a reference for comparison. The testing and numerical results showed that the story acceleration and inter-story displacement of the superstructure in the isolation model were significantly reduced, indicating the good damping effect of the isolation system. This system, which composed of rubber bearings, could absorb most of the seismic energy. The inter-story displacement of the substructure in the isolation model was also significantly reduced, while the acceleration was slightly reduced. The horizontal deformation of the column was not severe, and the seismic capacity of the substructure was higher than that of the superstructure. It is suggested that to guarantee the seismic security of reinforced concrete–framed structures with the first-story column-top isolation under extremely rare strong earthquakes, the stiffness of columns in the substructure should be further strengthened. Moreover, it is effective and reasonable to adopt the first-story column-top isolation method to improve the seismic capacity of reinforced concrete–framed structures with a weak first story.

Real-time systems power safety-critical applications that require strong isolation among each other. Such isolation needs to be enforced at two orthogonal levels. On the micro-architectural level, this mainly involves avoiding interference through micro-architectural states, such as cache lines. On the algorithmic level, this is usually achieved by adopting real-time partitions to reserve resources for each application. Implementations of such systems are often complex and require formal verification to guarantee proper isolation. In this paper, we focus on algorithmic isolation, which is mainly related to scheduling-induced interferences. We address earliest-deadline-first (EDF) partitions to achieve compositionality and utilization, while imposing constraints on tasks' periods and enforcing budgets on these periodic partitions to ensure isolation between each other. The formal verification of such a real-time OS kernel is challenging due to the inherent complexity of the dynamic priority assignment on the partition level. We tackle this problem by adopting a dynamically constructed abstraction to lift the reasoning of a concrete scheduler into an abstract domain. Using this framework, we verify a real-time operating system kernel with budget-enforcing EDF partitions and prove that it indeed ensures isolation between partitions. All the proofs are mechanized in Coq.

In the cloud datacenter, for the multi-tenant model, network resources should be fairly allocated among VDCs (virtual datacenters). Conventionally, the allocation of cloud network resources is on a best-effort basis, so the specific information of network resource allocation is unclear. Previous research has either aimed to provide minimum bandwidth guarantee, or focused on realizing work conservation according to the VM-to-VM (virtual machine to virtual machine) flow policy or per-source policy, or both policies. However, they failed to consider allocating redundant bandwidth among VDCs in a fair way. This paper presents a bandwidth that guarantees enforcement framework NXT-Freedom, and this framework allocates the network resources on the basis of per-VDC fairness, which can achieve work conservation. In order to guarantee per-VDC fair allocation, a hierarchical max–min fairness algorithm is put forward in this paper. In order to ensure that the framework can be applied to non-congestion-free network core and achieve scalability, NXT-Freedom decouples the computation of per-VDC allocation from the execution of allocation, but it brings some CPU overheads resulting from bandwidth enforcement. We observe that there is no need to enforce the non-blocking virtual network. Leveraging this observation, we distinguish the virtual network type of VDC to eliminate part of the CPU overheads. The evaluation results of a prototype prove that NXT-Freedom can achieve the isolation of per-VDC performance, which also shows fast adaption to flow variation in cloud datacenter.

Abstract A compact 4-port ultra-wide band (UWB) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) slot antenna with dual polarization is presented. The key features of antenna are: has directive radiation in two planes and low correlation without use of additional decoupling structure. The antenna contains four microstrip feedlines having circular patches backed by stepped circular slots. Orthogonal arrangement of each slot antenna increases compactness with polarization diversity and good isolation. The antenna has compact size of 36×36×0.8 mm3. It operates in the frequency band of 3.1 to 11.9 GHz and isolation is better than 15 dB. While on duty, soldiers are exposed to severe stress, and mental condition has a direct impact on the efficacy of their performance. The paper shows how the specificity of soldiers’ work affects their mental health. The importance of the role of psychologists in the army is emphasized, and the consequences of negligence in soldiers’ mental care are indicated. The way in which the mental health of soldiers is protected in Poland, by the state itself and by the institutions established for this purpose, is also characterised. Special attention is paid to mental health care for the soldiers that take part in foreign military missions, who are exposed to psychological trauma as a result of isolation from the family and friends, and as a result of being placed in a new cultural and religious environment. On the basis of the above, the necessity of implementing new system solutions to ensure the effective psychological protection of soldiers is indicated.

Abstract Aquatic animals have been maintained by humans in confined spaces since very ancient times. In the last century both, the need to implement seafood productions and the popularity of aquatic exhibits, have facilitated professional scientific development of live fish management techniques. In this context, aquatic animal welfare has therefore become an important standpoint to guarantee good and safe quality of seafood and sustainable aquaria and zoological collections. At the end of 2019, SARS-CoV-2 severely affected human health in China and shortly became pandemic, hence influencing globally most types of businesses. All animal industries fully dependent on human daily activities and resources, have been severely impacted by human distancing and isolation protocols. During this world crisis, extensive changes in aquarium management procedures had to be applied. Specific contingency plans were developed to protect humans and to guarantee animal care, in order to avoid the risk for aquaria fading away.

Snapshot isolation (SI) is a prevalent weak isolation level that avoids the performance penalty imposed by serializability and simultaneously prevents various undesired data anomalies. Nevertheless, SI anomalies have recently been found in production cloud databases that claim to provide the SI guarantee. Given the complex and often unavailable internals of such databases, a black-box SI checker is highly desirable. In this paper we present PolySI, a black-box checker that efficiently checks SI and provides understandable counterexamples upon detecting violations. PolySI builds on a characterization of SI using generalized polygraphs (GPs), for which we establish its soundness and completeness. PolySI employs an SMT solver and also accelerates SMT solving by utilizing a compact constraint encoding of GPs and domain-specific optimizations for pruning constraints. As our extensive assessment demonstrates, PolySI successfully reproduces all of 2477 known SI anomalies, detects novel SI violations in three production cloud databases, identifies their causes, outperforms the state-of-the-art black-box checkers under a wide range of workloads, and can scale up to large workloads.

The surge in cosmetic product consumption in Indonesia has spurred the growth of the local cosmetic industry. However, not all cosmetics in circulation adhere to the halal standards mandated by Indonesian authorities through the Law on Halal Product Guarantee. This study endeavors to establish a method for identifying pork-derived content in cosmetic cream products lacking the halal logo. The approach involves total DNA isolation using the Qiagen DNeasy Mericon Food Kit, followed by detecting the NDH5 gene using qPCR. Results indicated that the isolation kit effectively extracted DNA fragments from cosmetic products, yielding 0.6–0.8 ng/µL concentrations, with A260/280 ratios ranging from 0.90 to 1.76 and A260/230 ratios from 0.12 to 0.17. Analysis of five cosmetic cream samples revealed that three of them exhibited no contamination by pig-derived elements, with a cut-off value of 23.7×101. Consequently, the isolation method utilizing the kit and the subsequent detection of the NDH5 gene through qPCR emerge as a robust approach for identifying pig-derived ingredients in cream-based cosmetics.

Currently, the use of industrial seawater reverse osmosis desalination (ISROD) plants has increased in popularity in light of the growing global demand for freshwater. In ISROD plants, any fault in the components of their control systems can lead to a plant malfunction, and this condition can originate safety risks, energy waste, as well as affect the quality of freshwater. This paper addresses the design of a fault detection and isolation (FDI) system based on a structural analysis approach for an ISROD plant located in Lima (Peru). Structural analysis allows obtaining a plant model, which is useful to generate diagnostic tests. Here, diagnostic tests via fault-driven minimal structurally overdetermined (FMSO) sets are computed, and then, binary integer linear programming (BILP) is used to select the FMSO sets that guarantee isolation. Simulations shows that all the faults of interest (sensors and actuators faults) are detected and isolated according to the proposed design.

This article presents an analysis of the theory of relations and upbringing in the family as conceived by Jesper-Juul, whereby the focal point of the study rests on solitude, loneliness and isolation. The research was conducted using an analytical-synthetic method elaborated on the basis of the works of this pedagogue and therapist. The obtained results indicate an ontological dimension of loneliness in the family, and the need for its prior experience to guarantee one’s capacity to forge satisfying future relationships. The analysis of Juul's work leads to the conclusion that solitude and loneliness experienced in the family promote emotional growth of partners and that of the child. The work further focuses on destructive loneliness, i.e. isolation. The predominant conclusion drawn therefrom is that solitude and loneliness in the family carry a relationship-building potential. In the era of the Covid-19 pandemic, undertaking an in-depth analysis of this problem is particularly justified.

The aim of this paper is to present a fault detection algorithm (FDI) based on signal processing techniques developed for an inertial measurement unit (IMU) with minimal redundancy of fiber optic gyros. In this work the recursive median filter is applied in order to remove impulses (outliers) arising from data acquisition process and parity vector operations, improving the fault detection and isolation performance. The FDI algorithm is divided into two blocks: fault detection (FD) and fault isolation (FI). The FD part of the algorithm is used to guarantee the reliability of the isolation part and is based on parity vector analysis using -CUSUM algorithm. The FI part is performed using parity space projection of the energy subbands obtained from wavelet packet decomposition. This projection is an extension of clustering analysis based on singular value decomposition (SVD) and principal component analysis (PCA). The results of the FD and FI algorithms have shown the effectiveness of the proposed method, in which the FD algorithm is capable of indicating the low-level step bias fault with short delay and a high index of correct decisions of the FI algorithm also with low-level step bias fault.

The 0-day attack is a cyber-attack based on vulnerabilities that have not yet been published. The detection of anomalous traffic generated by such attacks is vital, as it can represent a critical problem, both in a technical and economic sense, for a smart enterprise as for any system largely dependent on technology. To predict this kind of attack, one solution can be to use unsupervised machine learning approaches, as they guarantee the detection of anomalies regardless of their prior knowledge. It is also essential to identify the anomalous and unknown behaviors that occur within a network in near real-time. Three different approaches have been proposed and benchmarked in exactly the same condition: Deep Autoencoding with GMM and Isolation Forest, Deep Autoencoder with Isolation Forest, and Memory Augmented Deep Autoencoder with Isolation Forest. These approaches are thus the result of combining different unsupervised algorithms. The results show that the addition of the Isolation Forest improves the accuracy values and increases the inference time, although this increase does not represent a relevant problematic factor. This paper also explains the features that the various models consider most important for classifying an event as an attack using the explainable artificial intelligence methodology called Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP). In this paper, we present a semi-active static output feedback variable structure control (VSC) strategy for vibration isolation. The control concept is based on the fact that, for a practical vibration isolation system subject to external disturbances, all state variables are hard to measure on-line and variations of system parameters frequently exist. A bypass electrorheological (ER) damper is designed and manufactured by incorporating a Bingham model of ER fluids. After the voltage-dependent damping characteristics of the ER damper are evaluated, the dynamic model of a two-stage vibration isolation system with one ER damper is derived. Using only the measured information from sensors installed at strategic locations, continuous output feedback VSC controllers are presented, which do not have possible chattering effects. The continuous control law is decoupled from external disturbances by combining controller design under a meeting sliding mode reachable condition with the choice of sliding surface gradient parameters under a guarantee of the Routh-Hurwitz stability of reduced-order sliding mode dynamics. The saturation of the actuator is also incorporated into the controller, showing no adverse effect. The self-adaptability of the vibration isolation system with respect to external disturbances, the robustness of the control method with respect to parameter variations and the effectiveness of vibration isolation are demonstrated by numerical simulation results in the frequency and time domains. It is illustrated that the performance of the presented semi-active static output feedback VSC system is superior to those of optimally passive damping and maximum damping variety even if system parameter uncertainties exist.

Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems is an important approach to guarantee the human safety of these systems. Therefore, the implementation of a FDI framework is required to reduce the energy needs for buildings and improving indoor environment quality. The main goal of this paper is to merge the benefits of multiscale representation, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Machine Learning (ML) classifiers to improve the efficiency of the detection and isolation of Air Conditioning (AC) systems. First, the multivariate statistical features extraction and selection is achieved using the PCA method. Then, the multiscale representation is applied to separate feature from noise and approximately decorrelate autocorrelation between available measurements. Third, the extracted and selected features are introduced to several machine learning classifiers for fault classification purposes. The effectiveness and higher classification accuracy of the developed Multiscale PCA (MSPCA)-based ML technique is demonstrated using two examples: synthetic data and simulated data extracted from Air Conditioning systems.

Large numbers of human hepatocytes were obtained from split and whole livers by using an adaptive form of the collagenase perfusion technique employed in rodent and human biopsies. In order to guarantee a homogenous distribution of the perfusate within the whole specimen, major hepatic veins were cannulated with large bore catheters. This technique allowed for the isolation of human hepatocytes on a large scale (up to 18.5 × 109 in one case) from normal and diseased liver specimens. The yield of isolated normal viable hepatocytes is inversely proportional to the donor age. In addition, it was noted that a short time between declared death and organ harvest (cross clamp time) results in higher viability of hepatocytes. In contrast, the time of cold organ preservation did not correlate with the viability or the yield of isolated hepatocytes. We conclude that the technique presented here allows isolation of large numbers of human hepatocytes from specimens unsuitable for transplantation but very valuable for biomedical research.

During drilling operations, effective displacement of fluids can provide high-quality cementing jobs, ensuring zonal isolation and strong bonding of cement with casing and formation. Poor cement placements due to incomplete mud removal can potentially lead to multiple critical operational problems and serious environmental hazards. Therefore, efficient mud removal and displacement of one fluid by another one is a crucial task that should be designed and optimized properly to guarantee the zonal isolation and integrity of the cement sheath. The present work provides an overview of the research performed on mud removal and cement placement to help the industry achieve better cementing jobs. An extensive number of investigations have been conducted in order to find some key techniques for minimizing the cement contamination and obtaining maximum displacement efficiency. Yet, even after implementing those techniques, the industry happens to encounter poor cementing jobs. The present review aims to assist with evaluating the current theories, methodologies, and practical techniques, in order to possibly identify the research gaps and facilitate the way for further improvements.

Three layout-hardened Dual Interlocked Storage Cell (DICE) D Flip-Flops (DFFs) were designed and manufactured based on an advanced 28 nm planar technology. The systematic vertical and tilt heavy ion irradiations demonstrated that the DICE structure contributes to radiation tolerance. However, it is hard to achieve immunity from a Single Event Upset (SEU), even when a ~3-µm well isolation is utilized. The SEU mitigation of the hardened DFFs was affected by the data patterns and clock signals due to the imbalance in the number of upset nodes. When the clock signal equalled 0, no error was observed in 181Ta irradiation, indicating that the DICE DFFs are SEU tolerant in vertical irradiation owing to their reasonable isolation of sensitive volumes. The divergences of SEU cross-sections were enlarged by our specially designed joint change of tilt incidences for both the along-cell and cross-cell irradiation of heavy ions. The evaluations of SEU for both the vertical and tilt irradiations assist with eliminating the overestimation of SEU tolerance and guarantee the in-orbit safety of spacecraft in harsh radiation environments.

Early and accurate detection and isolation of industrial process faults are crucial to avoiding abnormal situations that cause productivity losses. Principal component analysis and reconstruction-based contribution (PCA-RBC) is a popular method used for such tasks. Unfortunately, this method does not guarantee correct fault isolation in cases where the faulty variables contribute little or do not contribute at all to the main principal components of the PCA model. This is the case, for example, of some pollutant emission levels that do not affect the global performance of a biomass boiler, but that should be maintained below certain thresholds. This paper proposes to adapt the PCA-RBC method to cope with such limitations. The idea is first to classify the data onto normal and abnormal conditions according to a selected parameter threshold, and then to build a PCA model using the normal dataset. The RBC approach is applied on the abnormal dataset to identify the variables that mostly contribute to the faulty situations. The proposed method is successfully demonstrated using real data from an industrial case. It is noted that an attempt to develop an accurate predictive model of the selected parameter using projection to latent structures (PLS) was unsuccessful.

Single-cell transcriptomics is essential for understanding biological variability among cells in a heterogenous population. Acquiring high-quality single-cell sequencing data from a tissue sample has multiple challenges including isolation of individual cells as well as amplification of the genetic material. Commercially available techniques require the isolation of individual cells from a tissue through extensive manual manipulation before single cell sequence data can be acquired. However, since cells within a tissue have different dissociation constants, enzymatic and mechanical manipulation do not guarantee the isolation of a homogenous population of cells. To overcome this drawback, in this research we have developed a revolutionary approach that utilizes a fully automated nanopipette technology in combination with magnetic nanoparticles to obtain high quality sequencing reads from individual cells within an intact tissue thereby eliminating the need for manual manipulation and single cell isolation. With the proposed technology, it is possible to sample an individual cell within the tissue multiple times to obtain longitudinal information. Single-cell RNAseq was achieved by aspirating only1-5% of sub-single-cell RNA content from individual cells within fresh frozen tissue samples. As a proof of concept, aspiration was carried out from 22 cells within a breast cancer tissue slice using quartz nanopipettes. The mRNA from the aspirate was then selectively captured using magnetic nanoparticles. The RNAseq data from aspiration of 22 individual cells provided high alignment rates (80%) with 2 control tissue samples. The technology is exceptionally simple, quick and efficient as the entire cell targeting and aspiration process is fully automated.

The findings indicate that the various networks collaboratively support learners’ knowledge sharing in a local community. A better social position gives rise to more networks and correspondingly more knowledge accessible to learners. The between-group ties such as residential committees are crucial for knowledge exchange through connecting various social networks. Social isolation impacts learners’ interactions with others. However, more networks do not necessarily lead to more advanced knowledge acquisition. Accessing social networks cannot guarantee that learners will successfully access substantial knowledge in other fields. Social networks targeting learners’ need influence learners’ interest in social networks.

High transient current from a digital circuitry, fast di/dt, within an analog circuitry co-existence is very demanding. Analysis of the diverse potential noise coupling path, and suggested solutions, is required to guarantee proper functionality and performances of both circuitries. Our noise analysis includes the die, package and PCB power supply and decoupling strategy. This analysis takes into consideration the efficiency of the power delivery Network, PDN, at a Macro and Micro environment. The analysis is using 3D Simulations techniques based on causal model. With this novel technique, we investigate the potential noise induction through the ground path and isolation. For the conclusion, we suggest a method that improve the PI analysis over a mix signal IC..

The correct management of Water Distribution Networks (WDNs) allows to obtain a reliable system. When a pipe failure occurs in a network and it is necessary to isolate a zone, it is possible that some nodes do not guarantee service for the users due to inadequate heads. In these conditions a Pressure Driven Analysis (PDA) is the correct approach to evaluate network behavior. This analysis is more appropriate than the Demand Driven Analysis (DDA) because it is known that the effective delivered flow at each node is influenced by the pressure value. In this case, it is important to identify a subset of isolation valves to limit disrupting services in the network. For a real network, additional valves must be added to existing ones. In this paper a new methodological analysis is proposed: it defines an objective function (OF) to provide a measure of the system correct functioning. The network analysis using the OF helps to choose the optimal number of additional valves to obtain an adequate system control. In emergency conditions, the OF takes into account the new network topology obtained excluding the zone where the broken pipe is located. OF values depend on the demand deficit caused by the head decrement in the network nodes for each pipe burst considered. The results obtained for a case study confirm the efficiency of the methodology.
