The unlicensed industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band at 2.4 GHz has gained increased attention recently due to the high data rate communication systems developed to operate in this band. The paper presents measurement results of fading characteristics, multipath parameters and background interference for these frequencies. Some statistical analysis of the measured data is presented. The paper provides information that may be useful in design and deployment of communication systems operating in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, like those compliant with IEEE 802.11 standard and Bluetooth open wireless standard

Cognitive radio has received considerable amount of attention as a promising technique to provide dynamic spectrum allocation. Spectrum sensing is one of the basic functions in the cognitive radio and is crucial to all other functions. Software- defined radios (SDRs) are considered due to its very high flexibility and have become a common platform for CR implementation replacing expensive spectrum analysers. The most popular among various SDR platforms is the universal software-defined radio peripheral (USRP). This paper presents a real-time swept spectrum sensing solution based on USRP B210. It also presents a detailed explanation of the concept of energy detection and the methodology for wide-band sensing. Finally, the performance of the proposed sensing solution is analysed through FFT graphs and spectrogram plot taken for 8 hours. The results showed that the proposed sensing solution was capable of achieving high resolution in the frequency domain of the wide band measured which implies that wide bands with heterogenous signals like the ISM band can be accurately resolved and analysed.

ABSTRACT Vela X-1 is a runaway X-ray binary system hosting a massive donor star, whose strong stellar wind creates a bow shock as it interacts with the interstellar medium (ISM). This bow shock has previously been detected in H α and infrared, but, similar to all but one bow shock from a massive runaway star (BD+43o3654), has escaped detection in other wavebands. We report on the discovery of 1.3 GHz radio emission from the Vela X-1 bow shock with the MeerKAT telescope. The MeerKAT observations reveal how the radio emission closely traces the H α line emission, both in the bow shock and in the larger scale diffuse structures known from existing H α surveys. The Vela X-1 bow shock is the first stellar-wind-driven radio bow shock detected around an X-ray binary. In the absence of a radio spectral index measurement, we explore other avenues to constrain the radio emission mechanism. We find that thermal/free–free emission can account for the radio and H α properties, for a combination of electron temperature and density consistent with earlier estimates of ISM density and the shock enhancement. In this explanation, the presence of a local ISM overdensity is essential for the detection of radio emission. Alternatively, we consider a non-thermal/synchrotron scenario, evaluating the magnetic field and broad-band spectrum of the shock. However, we find that exceptionally high fractions (≳ 13 per cent) of the kinetic wind power would need to be injected into the relativistic electron population to explain the radio emission. Assuming lower fractions implies a hybrid scenario, dominated by free–free radio emission. Finally, we speculate about the detectability of radio bow shocks and whether it requires exceptional ISM or stellar wind properties.

AbstractCold, diffuse HI clouds are a key component of the interstellar medium (ISM), and play an important role in the evolution of galaxies. Carbon radio recombination lines (CRRLs) trace this ISM stage, and with the enormous sensitivity of LOFAR we have already begun to map and constrain the physical properties of this gas in our own Galaxy. Using LOFAR's low band antenna, we have observed M 82 and present the first ever extragalactic detection of CRRLs. We stack 22 lines to find a 8.5-sigma detection. The line peak to continuum ratio is ∼0.003, with a FWHM of 31 km s−1. The CRRL feature is consistent with an origin in the cold, neutral medium in the direction of the nucleus of M 82.

AbstractThe aim of our project is to search for ways to best extract information on pulsar profiles and the interstellar medium (ISM), using the wide frequency bands that are typical of radio telescopes today. Pulsar profiles typically show a strong dependence on frequency. This depends both on the intrinsic radio emission mechanism, and the interaction of the radio waves with the ISM that lies between the pulsars and our detectors on Earth, due mostly to the effects of dispersion and scattering. In this work, we make use of radio pulsar beam models from the existing literature, to generate simulated pulse profiles, observed across various bands (centre frequencies and bandwidths), for each beam model. For all the chosen geometric parameters of the pulsar beam, observed in any frequency band, the simulated profiles manifest a relative shift in phase in their observed components, as a result of the intrinsic profile evolution. This relative shift in phase could be interpreted as an additional component to the ISM induced dispersion measure (DM). This additional DM component due to profile evolution is frequency dependent. We discuss the systematics introduced to pulsar data due to this effect.

Radio frequency identification and localization is a key technology in the Internet of Things. This paper reports an ARM Cortex-M3 processor based hand-held radio frequency identification and localization terminal and a 8051 processor based active radio frequency tags. The terminal and the tags utilize STM32F103VET6 and the low power consumption STC12LE4052AD as their master controller, respectively. Both of them use Nordic nRF24L01 as their radio frequency identification module. The system works in 2.4GHz ISM microwave band and can read, write and locate radio frequency tags within 20m indoors. The actual measurement of active radio frequency tags shows that this terminal is highly stable and comparable in 2.4GHz microwave frequency radio identification and localization.

With the word of smart, the whole world is running on the smart technologies and smart devices which are fairly constructed by wireless sensors networks. The heart of the WSNs are nodes, which are deployed in different environmental conditions with different applications.‘Power constraint’ is a major challenge faced by all manufacturers of nodes, as all the components of the nodes are running just with a single source battery. The work presented in this thesis is an attempt to reduce the power consumption of WSNsby developing a unique Wake-Up Radio system that is super-efficient in power consumption when one compares it to duty cycling method. This paper presents a simple wake-up radio architecture with easily available Off the shelf components and operating in ISM band.At the transmitting end, a receiver with 125 KHz baseband signal is modulated on an 868MHz frequency carrier and is transmitted with the help of homemade dipole antenna. The wake-up radio receiver is constructed with a receiving antenna of 868 MHz and a network that matches good impedance to reduce the power loss of received signal, followed by a demodulation circuit with HSMS-285C zero bias Schottky diode to retrieve the baseband signal and to increase the sensitivity of the device. Later, the retrieved baseband signal is received by AS3933 low frequency wake-up receiver. The AS933 works like a comparator which compares the incoming address with the stored address to generate wake-up interrupt over node’s microcontroller activating it to perform its function.Measurements were made with the help of AS3933 demo board. The proposed system has a current consumption of 42.74μA including the current consumption of the components deployed in the demo board. In an ideal case, wake-up radio can be constructed without usingAS3933 demo board by using only AS3933 IC that gives current consumption of 2.8μA. The developed prototype has a sensitivity of -40 dBm which resulted in a wake-up distance of 20meters at an output power of -5 dBm from the transmitting antenna. This justifies that the proposed system lowers power consumption in wireless sensor networks when compared to duty cycling.

Cal Poly’s PolySat CubeSat satellites have begun to conduct more complex and scientifically significant experiments. The large data products generated by these missions demonstrate the necessity for higher data rate communication than currently provided by the PolySat UHF radio. This thesis leverages the proliferation of consumer wireless monolithic transceivers to develop a 250kbps to 2000kbps, 2W CubeSat radio operating within the 2.45GHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) radio band. Estimating a link budget for a realistic CubeSat leads to the conclusion that this system will require a large deployable CubeSat antenna, large earth station satellite dish, and a fine-pointing attitude control system. Noise floor measurements of a CubeSat ground station demonstrate that terrestrial ISM interference can be minimized to below the thermal noise floor by carefully choosing the operating frequency. The radio is specifically designed as a daughter board for the PolySat System Board with a direct interface to the embedded Linux microprocessor. A state-of-the-art ZigBee transceiver evaluation board is measured to confirm its suitability for a CubeSat radio. A schematic is developed, which integrates the transceiver, power amplifier, low noise amplifier, amplifier protection circuitry, switching regulators, and RF power measurement into a single printed circuit board assembly (PCBA). The circuitry is then squeezed into a high-density, 1.4” x 3.3” layout. The PCBA is then manufactured, troubleshot, tuned, and characterized.

The Communications industry is currently involved in a wireless revolution. Consequently, there is a need for a wide variety of wireless solutions to replace existing wired systems. The major systems, such as cellular and satellite, are costly to put in place and require a low BER (bit error rate) to be successful for their real-time applications. In contrast to this are those systems that can tolerate a higher BER as a trade off for cost (<$50.00) and complexity. A typical application for these lower cost systems is monitoring non-critical data that is not required to be delivered real-time. The work presented here focused on designing, building and testing a Proof of Concept Prototype (POCP) for a low-cost wireless data link (WDL). In a typical WDL application, problems arise when too large a data rate attempts to travel the allotted channel bandwidth in the frequency band of interest. Also, limitations imposed by current radio transceiver technology tend to limit WDL design. The existing sponsor's wired system operates at a 9600 Baud, and presented the opposite problem: the data rate was too low for the RF Microdevices RF2905 used for the POCP. This challenge necessitated the development of a low-cost encoding scheme using standard digital logic gates in place of more costly Manchester Encoding. For the digital logic encoding scheme to work, the crystal oscillators had to be modified. This resolved the problem with the low frequency limitations of the RF2905 phase locked-loop. In addition, the polled, asynchronous, and unbalanced RS485 connections of the wired system had to be adapted to interface with the single-ended data connections of the WDL. Finally, the successful design of a timing scheme, using standard TTL components and balanced to unbalanced drivers, resolved the interface problems resulting in a low-cost WDL designed to operate with an existing wired system without requiring modifications to that system. The WDL is transparent in connection and operation and can be inserted without disrupting the current wired system.

The long-range (LoRa) technology and the LoRaWAN protocol, which mainly uses the sub-GHz frequency bands, subject to regional laws, have become widely used as a result of the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT). To overcome these limitations, Semtech has released a version of LoRa dedicated to the 2.4 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band, which, among others, is worldwide available and has no duty-cycle limitations. However, this frequency band is already used by many wireless technologies, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (BT), as well as by common devices like microwaves and surveillance cameras. It is essential to evaluate the feasibility and the possible performance of this frequency band shift before deploying LoRa on a large scale in the 2.4 GHz ISM band. This thesis proposes a comprehensive experimental evaluation of LoRa technology in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, including a comparison of its communication range and reliability with the European sub-GHz band (868 MHz). We also study the coexistence of LoRa and Wi-Fi when they are overlapping transmissions. To improve the coexistence, we propose and compare several frequency hopping (FH) strategies for LoRa. Although the latter proposal is based on simulation, we also propose an original methodology for evaluating a frequency band and selecting the less noisy channels, which could facilitate the implementation of FH strategies in future LoRa 2.4 GHz gateways. Our work provides important recommendations for the deployment and expansion of LoRa in the 2.4 GHz ISM band

This thesis examined innovative solutions to optimize the connectivity and performance of connected objects, particularly focusing on connected agriculture, where ensuring connectivity is crucial. By analyzing LPWAN and satellite technologies, we demonstrated that hybrid connectivity represents a promising approach to covering white zones, especially in isolated rural areas. A satellite communication antenna prototype was designed to ensure effective reception with the Kinéis constellation, while a frequency-reconfigurable antenna was developed to facilitate flexible communications between terrestrial and satellite networks. Additionally, the enhancement of a TPMS system, specifically aimed at agricultural machinery, significantly increased the sensitivity and robustness of the system, thus meeting the requirements of applications in challenging environments. Despite certain challenges related to manufacturing complexity, this research lays a solid foundation for IoT solutions tailored to the specific needs of connected agriculture and opens perspectives for other sectors requiring coverage in remote areas

This book chronicles the history of radio as technology and as media. Radio grew from a clumsy, temperamental form of wireless telegraph to a system that is so ubiquitous and easy to use that it has disappeared to users as a technology and became part of the fabric of human existence. This biography charts the growth of the technical end of radio, starting with the history of electricity, and moving through the invention of vacuum tubes, the heterodyne, FM, transistors, and microchips. But the history of radio is not just wires and electricity—it's the story of strange characters, deep thinkers, visionary mystics, hyperactive minds, ambitious souls, power hungry demagogues, and utopian humanists; all of whom strove to make radio into what they thought it should be. In addition,Radio: The Life Story of a Technologylooks at the technology as a cultural phenomenon, including the corporate aspects and history of the business of radio. In the middle of the 20th century people saw that radio could be used as an agent of social change, both good and bad. The transition of radio from private corporate device to public news provider to entertainment box back to political tool is at the heart of this work.

An in-depth look at the rise of enigmatic Australian rock band TISM, the unexpected success of their 1995 album,Machiavelli and the Four Seasons, and the continued trajectory of their storied career. Focusing on one of Australia’s most enigmatic bands, This Is Serious Mum (better known as TISM), Tyler Jenke forms an in-depth analysis of the anonymous, pseudonymous Melbourne collective’s rise to prominence and unlikely success on the popular music charts with their third album,Machiavelli and the Four Seasons(1995). Jenke details TISM’s origins as they slowly went from a bedroom concept to an underground success to a staple of concert stages and commercial radio in Australia, growing a rabid fanbase in the process. Despite the anti-commercial tendencies of TISM, whose album artwork didn’t feature the band, whose band members performed under pseudonyms and who rarely gave interviews, never mind sincere answers, TISM became a commercially successful group. In this book, Jenke identifies the steps the band took to shift their sound from their tried-and-true experimental Australian pub-rock roots to the burgeoning, youthful electronic music genre, employing synthesizers and samplers. With their new sound, TISM incorporated Dadaism – the use of unusual or everyday sounds – and both avant-garde and classic pop musicianship. The band’s new sound resulted in both top ten success and an ARIA Award. This is the first book to dissect TISM’s rise to fame within the Australian music industry and analyze TISM’s status as one of the most memorable, mysterious and paradoxically successful groups in the country’s vibrant alternative music scene.

This chapter discusses the Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR) and Net Stable Funding Ratio (NSFR). The LCR is designed to make sure that the bank has sufficient liquidity to survive short-term shocks; the NSFR is designed to make sure that the bank's balance sheet is not too excessively mismatched between long- and short-term funding. In essence, LCR is a requirement that the bank has sufficient liquid assets to get through a 30-day period of high stress, whilst NSFR is a requirement that the bank's long-term assets be substantially funded by long-term liabilities. Both of these tests require some heroic assumptions about access to funding, likely roll-off of liabilities, and so on.

The Beatles are known for cheeky punchlines, but understanding their humor goes beyond laughing at John Lennon’s memorable “rattle your jewelry” dig at the Royal Variety Performance in 1963. From the beginning, the Beatles’ music was full of wordplay and winks, guided by comedic influences ranging from rhythm and blues, British radio, and the Liverpool pub scene. Gifted with timing and deadpan wit, the band habitually relied on irony, sarcasm, and nonsense. Early jokes revealed an aptitude for improvisation and self-awareness, techniques honed throughout the 1960s and into solo careers. Experts in the art of play, including musical experimentation, the Beatles’ shared sense of humor is a key ingredient to their appeal during the 1960s— and to their endurance. The Beatles and Humour offers innovative takes on the serious art of Beatle fun, an instrument of social, political, and economic critique. Chapters also situate the band alongside British and non-British predecessors and collaborators, such as Billy Preston and Yoko Ono, uncovering diverse components and unexpected effects of the Beatles’ output.

This chapter focuses on Kentuckian Bill Stepp, who worked as a logger in his younger days, then later turned his energies to fiddling for neighborhood hoedowns. Stepp is the creative source of an American anthem. In 1942 his rendition of the tune “Bonaparte's Retreat” became incorporated, nearly note for note, in the score of Rodeo, Aaron Copland's acclaimed modern ballet. By the early 1970s it appeared as “Hoedown,” an FM radio hit for Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, a symphonically oriented English rock band. Later, it formed the soundtrack for the beef growers' commercial, and finally, in this, an example of its continuing presence in American life, it recurs in the music piped down the hallways of a modern airport.

This paper estimates the output cost of fighting inflation—the sacrifice ratio—for the South African economy using quarterly data spanning the period 1998Q1–2019Q3. To compute the sacrifice ratio, the structural vector autoregressive model developed by Cecchetti and Rich (2001) based on Cecchetti (1994) is employed. Our findings show us a small sacrifice ratio, which lies within the range 0.00002–0.231 per cent with an average of 0.031 per cent, indicating a low level of output to be sacrificed while fighting inflation. Hence, the reserve bank is recommended to sustain an inflation rate within the target range and reap the benefits of a predictable and stable price path, as restrictive monetary policy has only a transitory effect on real variables like output.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) use the unlicensed Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band for transmissions. However, with the increasing usage of these networks for diverse applications, the currently available ISM band does not suffice for their transmissions and a new challenge appears before the WSNs' research community. One of the candidate approaches to tackle this spectrum insufficiency problem is to incorporate the opportunistic spectrum access capability of Cognitive Radio (CR) into the existing WSN, thus giving birth to Cognitive Radio Sensor Network (CRSN). Efficient spectrum utilization is another approach to overcome this challenging problem. Another challenge associated to WSN operation is the dependability of sensor nodes on battery supplied power where the batteries in general are not replaceable. Therefore, advanced and intelligent radio resource management schemes are very essential to perform dynamic and efficient spectrum allocation among multiple sensor nodes and to optimize the power consumption of each individual node in the network. Radio resource management enables the sensor nodes to efficiently utilize the available spectrum and power, which in turn ensures QoS transmissions, maximizes the network lifetime, and reduces the inter-node and inter-network interferences. In this chapter, the authors present a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in radio resource management for CRSN. Radio resource management in CRSN has been reviewed in various scenarios (i.e., centralized, cluster-based, and distributed). The related issues and challenges are discussed, and future research directions are highlighted.

Cognitive Radio (CR) technologies have recently been created to address spectrum underutilization issues and help in efficient data transmission. Spectrum sensing is a critical phase in cognitive applications in which the cognitive user identifies the presence of PU in one channel and switches to another to continue transmission. Despite the availability of several methodologies in the literature, their implementation in Industrial Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks (IWSANs) is restricted due to complexity and accuracy limits. IWSANs demand less complex detection techniques Without compromising efficiency and determinism. As a result, in this research, we present a spectrum sensing technique for the Indus trial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band in which autocorrelation features as well as received signal noise are employed to determine the existence the presence of Primary User (PU) in the channel. Our idea is based on the fact that the presence of PU in the channel is Specified by the presence of modulation format. The studies included four modulation techniques: Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK), Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK), and Gaussian Frequency Shift Keying (GFSK). An Improved Energy Detection (IED) Approach is presented for signals with different modulation formats and low Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), where the dynamic threshold is determined based on noise power estimation. In an Integrated Development Environment (IDE), simulations were run with IQ imbalance, DC and frequency offsets, and Gaussian noise. The findings show that the suggested approach has a high chance of detection over a range of SNRs. This also proves the suitability of the approach for implementation in IWSANs

Development of Swarm Bot for Defence and Medical Application Design of Swarm bot is an initiative towards the synchronized performance of multiple bots as a total system consisting huge numbers of plain real-time bots. It is observed that an expected groupwise behavior is expressed from the interactions between the bots and the master device. The head posture movement is used to send the signal from the master device to communicate the slave devices. This methodology has come out in the field of artificial swarm intelligence, as well as the bio-inspired researches of insects and other fields in nature with the occurrence of swarm behavior. This process depends on the master-slave concept to operate the whole system. The wireless communication utilizes the SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) protocol with radio waves in the range of 2.4-2.5 GHz. The ISM (Industrial Scientific Medical) band is used for the communication purpose. Development of Verticle Climbing Camouflage Surveillance Bot Scientists are trying to make vehicles that can move through both vertical and horizontal planes simultaneously for a long time. Moving against gravity makes it very difficult because of wheel spin in a steeply inclined surface plane. In this paper, we are dealing with the design and development of a WI-FI controlled bot that can move on both horizontal and vertical surfaces. The air suction technique is used to hold the bot on a vertically inclined surface. This paper presents the design and development of a wall climbing bot using an ESP32 CAM microcontroller. The wall climbing feature is achieved by using a 2200kv BLDC motor and 600 mm propeller. When the propeller is rotated using the BLDC motor, the propeller sucks the air underneath the robot, creating a vacuum. As a result, outside air pressure works on the robot and makes it stick to the horizontal surface. The robot`s movement is done by using 4 100 RPM dc motors. The motors are connected to the ESP32 microcontroller via motor driver L298N and can be manually controlled using any ESP32 Android/IOS mobile application. We have used the TCS3200 colour sensor and RGB LED lights to change the colour of the body as per the surroundings. The robot can be used for any surveillance purposes from general surveillance purposes to surveillance of hostile areas.

Cadmium telluride (CdTe) is a binary II-VI direct band gap semiconducting material. Cadmium telluride is a promising electrochemical and photovoltaic material for thin film solar cells. It shows both p and n type conductivity. A nanocrystalline thin film of CdTe was deposited on nickel plate by chemical bath deposition method containing 0.01M Cadmium acetate and 0.02M tellurium dioxide. The structural, compositional, and optical analysis were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and photoluminescence (PL).The diffraction peak observed at 2=23.59° with (111) plane indicate the crystalline phase of CdTe film. The average crystalline size is measured to be 7nm.Compositional analysis reveals the presence of both Cd and Te elements. The EDS spectroscopy shows the ratio of Cd and Te is1:2 in case of as deposited film. The photoluminescence peak is observed at 471nm.

Resumo:
After a protracted period of financial deepening following a financial crisis at the end of the 20th century, the ratio of corporate bank loans to GDP in Colombia stagnated between 2016 and 2019. In this paper, we explore if firms have substituted bank loans for other financial instruments or if there has been a deleveraging process. From a longer-term growth perspective, we also aim to investigate whether fast-growing firms differ from others in terms of their financial leverage. We find that the decline in the ratio of bank corporate loans to GDP is related to a substitution of funding sources and is not part of a firm’s balance sheet deleveraging process. We also find that the slowdown in financial liabilities coincided with a decrease in the investment-to-GDP ratio that was part of the macroeconomic adjustment to a sharp deterioration of terms of trade between 2014 and 2016. An exploration of granular firm data indicates that fast-sale-growing enterprises typically display greater total leverage ratios, but their relative reliance on financial liabilities is less clear. On the other hand, financial leverage is higher for firms that exhibit large CAPEX-to-asset ratios. Thus, the association between financial intermediation and investment seems stronger than between financial intermediation and sales growth.

This paper complements previous studies by arguing that the low private savings ratio in Latin America can be associated with the limited confidence of households and businesses in domestic financial institutions. Previous studies have established a relationship between private savings and financial markets either by using a measure of 'financial depth' or a measure of 'borrowing constraints.' This paper offers an alternative view by claiming that the private savings rate relates positively to the confidence of the private sector in the strength of the financial system and that the latter concept can be approximated by the ratio of corporate demand for bank liquid assets. Latin American countries have lower private savings rates than other developing and most industrial countries. They also display the highest corporate to household bank deposit ratios among the three groups of countries considered here. Further, the ratio of corporate to household deposit holdings is strongly correlated with other indicators of banking system fragility.

This paper studies from an empirical and theoretical perspective the systemic and bank-level effects of imposing reserve requirements (RR) in foreign currency in an economy with a heavily dollarized financial system. The paper empirically characterizes banks responses to the RR carried out by the Peruvian Central Bank since 2008 with the objective of stabilizing the financial market and meeting its policy targets. The results suggest that the RR is effective in reducing the overall level of credit in the economy and that banks response in terms of credit and deposits is very heterogeneous depending on their ex ante preference for foreign funding ratio, i.e., the ratio of deposits in dollars to total loans. Motivated by the empirical insights, the paper builds a DSGE small-open-economy model with financial frictions à la Gertler-Karadi-Kiyotaki, where bank heterogeneity and financial dollarization are introduced to evaluate the effectiveness of the differential RR in reducing financial dollarization and improving financial resilience.

The effects of capital requirements on risk-taking and welfare are studied in a stochastic overlapping generations model of endogenous growth with banking, limited liability, and government guarantees. Capital producers face a choice between a safe technology and a risky (but socially inefficient) technology, and bank risk-taking is endogenous. Setting the capital adequacy ratio above a structural threshold can eliminate the equilibrium with risky loans (and thus inefficient risk-taking), but numerical simulations show that this may entail a welfare loss. In addition, the optimal ratio may be too high in practice and may concomitantly require a broadening of the perimeter of regulation and a strengthening of financial supervision to prevent disintermediation and distortions in financial markets.

Corporate sectors in emerging market economies have increased noticeably their reliance on foreign financing, presumably reecting low global interest rates. This trend has largely reflected increased bond issuance by emerging economies' firms, in contrast to the bank loans that dominated capital flows in the past. To shed light on these developments, we develop a stochastic dynamic model of an open economy in which the levels of direct versus intermediated finance are determined endogenously. The model embeds the static, partial equilibrium model of Holmström and Tirole (1997) into a dynamic general equilibrium setting. It generates an increase in both bonds and loans following an exogenous drop in world interest rates; also, the ratio of bonds to loans increases because bank credit becomes relatively more expensive, reflecting the scarcity of bank equity. These implications are in line with empirical observations and highlight the role of equity in the adjustment process. More generally, the model is suitable for studying the interaction between modes of finance and the macroeconomy, and is of independent interest.

We provide compelling evidence of the association between credit standards at loan origination in the corporate sector and default risk, a topic that has received little attention in the literature in comparison to the study of this relationship in the mortgage market. Using data from the Spanish credit register merged with corporate balance sheet information spanning the last financial cycle, we demonstrate that leverage and debt burden ratios at loan origination are key predictors of future corporate loan defaults. We also show that the deterioration in lending standards is strongly correlated to the build-up of cyclical systemic risk during periods of financial expansions. Specifically, limits on the debt-to-assets ratio and the interest coverage ratio could serve as effective tools to mitigate credit risk during economic expansions. We identify that the strength of these associations varies significantly across different sectors and is dependent on firms’ size, age and the existence of prior relationships with the bank. Real estate firms and small and medium-sized enterprises exhibit the strongest relationship between credit standards and future default. Overall, our findings provide strong support for the effectiveness of macroprudential measures targeting the corporate sector and contribute to providing guidance for the implementation of borrower-based measures in key segments of corporate credit.

This paper describes the share of investment in fixed capital and working capital financed by retained earnings using a harmonized dataset from the World Bank Enterprise Survey. The sample includes firms across countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Descriptive statistics are presented for the share of purchases of fixed assets financed with internal funds or retained earnings, the share of working capital financed with internal funds, the ratio between internal funds used for purchasing fixed assets and sales, and annual purchases of fixed assets (as a proportion of annual sales). Also presented are stylized facts exploring how these variables differ by country, firm size, firm age, registration, sector of activity, and ownership. It is found that internal funds are extensively used to finance both purchases of fixed assets and working capital, particularly by smaller firms located in countries with less developed financial markets. Investment in fixed assets represents about 7. 5 percent of sales in the region and is significantly higher among larger and registered firms.

When individuals decide to retire from the labour force, different sources of income can help to maintain consumption and welfare. One of those is public pensions. Their importance as an income source varies greatly according to socio-economic status (SES). This paper analyzes how replacement rates (RR) of public pensions (OAS and GIS) and mandatory public pension benefits (C/QPP) vary across SES by using the Longitudinal and International Study of Adults dataset (LISA). Using the longitudinal nature of this survey, we compute and compare average RRs by SES. We specifically consider the role of education and health, and we study how living arrangements can explain RRs variations. To give an idea the average RR of public pensions for individuals in bad health is 32%, while it is 21% for those who report being in good health. Including public pensions and C/QPP benefits, these numbers become 54% for those in bad health and 41% for those in good health. When estimating a multivariate regression model and controlling for past income, we find for couples, that past income does not eliminate differences in replacement ratio by individuals’ characteristics. We argue that assortative mating plays a role in explaining the variation of replacement rates across individuals’ characteristics.

The many festivals, museums and library exhibitions attract visitors from the metropolitan centre of Victoria especially. The Bendigo Creative Industries Hub was a local council initiative while the Ulumbarra Theatre is located within the City’s 1860’s Sandhurst Gaol. Many festivals keep the city culturally active and are supported by organisations such as Bendigo Bank. The Bendigo Writers Festival, the Bendigo Queer Film Festival, The Bendigo Invention & Innovation Festival, Groovin the Moo and the Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival are well established within the community. A regional accelerator and Tech School at La Trobe University are touted as models for other regional Victorian cities. The city has a range of high quality design agencies, while the software and digital content sector is growing with embeddeds working in agriculture and information management systems. Employment in Film, TV and Radio and Visual Arts has remained steady in Bendigo for a decade while the Music and Performing Arts sector grew quite well over the same period.
