Kata Kunci: magnitudo momen gempa, amplitudo maksimum tsunami, tsunami trans-Pasifik Abstract Tectonic earthquakes and tsunamis are the most dangerous geological hazards considering damaging impacts on living things, human properties, and affected areas. Despite its importance, little is known about a relationship between earthquake moment magnitude and tsunami maximum amplitude. Hence, this study aims to find and analyse empirical equations relating earthquake sizes measured as moment magnitudes to tsunami maximum amplitudes for cases of 7 trans-Pacific occurrences (the 2006 Kuril, Russian, 2009 New Zealand, 2010 Maule, Chili, 2011 Tohoku, Japan, 2013 Solomon, 2014 Iquique, Chili, and 2015 Illapel, Chili events) and 6 Indonesian tsunamis (the 2004 Indian Ocean, 2007 Sumatera, 2010 Sumatera, 2010 Mentawai, 2012 Sumatera, and 2016 Sumatera events). Data in this study were acquired from field measurements by tsunami monitoring instrument (DART surface buoys and tide gauges) available at https://nctr.pmel.noaa.gov/database_devel.html and http://ngdc.noaa.gov officially operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and http://ptwc.weather.gov/ officialy managed by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC). The research results in terms of empirical relations between the moment magnitude and the tsunami maximum amplitude for 7 trans-Pacific tsunami events at distant observations are then provided by whereas for the Indonesian tsunamis monitored at both near-field and far-field observations, . The difference in the multiplying factor of the logarithmic function in each equation is due to differences in complexity in the ocean topography and bathymetri between the Pacific and Indian Oceans as well as the nature of tsunami wave propagation for different tsunami directivities in the two Oceans. The findings are such that the moment magnitude scaled with is found to be a logarithmic function of the tsunami maximum amplitude for both regions of interest, consistent with that of previous work. Keywords: earthquake moment magnitude, tsunami maximum amplitude, trans-Pacific tsunamis.

On Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at 8:46 p.m. local time in Chile, a subduction earthquake of Mw 8.2 occurred about 100[Formula: see text]km northwest of the city of Iquique, where the Nazca plate subducts beneath the South American plate. This earthquake triggered a tsunami, which hit coastal areas in northern Chile. A joint Japan–Chile team conducted a post-tsunami field survey to measure the height of the tsunami traces and to investigate the damage caused by the earthquake and tsunami. Based on measurements of the tsunami traces, it is estimated that a tsunami 3–4[Formula: see text]m in height hit the coast from Arica, which is near the border between Chile and Peru, to Patache, south of Iquique, a straight-line distance of approximately 260[Formula: see text]km. The tsunami caused only minor inundations near shorelines, and caused no damage to buildings because living spaces were higher than the tsunami run-up height. Seismic damage was more extensive than that caused by the tsunami, especially in Iquique, and included the destruction of houses, buildings, and other infrastructure. It also ignited fires. In the Port of Iquique, a wharf, before earthquake-resistant improvements were implemented, was destroyed by the strong ground motions that resulted from the earthquake.

This article problematizes this assumption by examining the crisis of oligarchical domination in Chile, specifically from the city of Iquique, the center of the working-class concentration. The class conflict was highly developed at this region. It is observed the need to combine repression and political legitimacy which gave birth to the new forms to apply and limit the use of violence over political movements. The strength of labor organizations forced the dominant class to relativize its repressive vocation creating a complex relation between repression ad democratization, which would feature the construction of Chilean modern politic system .Keywords: Repression. In this study, we present comparisons between the local soil conditions and the observed damage for the 1 April 2014 Iquique earthquake. Four cases in which site effects may have played a predominant role are analyzed: (1) the ZOFRI area, with damage in numerous structures; (2) the port of Iquique, in which one pier suffered large displacements; (3) the Dunas I building complex, where soil-structure interaction may have caused important structural damage; and (4) the city of Alto Hospicio, disturbed by the effects of saline soils. Geophysical characterization of the soils was in agreement with the observed damage in the first three cases, while in Alto Hospicio the earthquake damage cannot be directly related to geophysical characterization.

SUMMARYFrom 1979 to August 1987, there have been 178 cases of meningococcal disease in Iquique, Chile, a city of about 140000. The attack rate for the last 5 years has been in excess of 20/100000 per year, more than 20 times greater than for the country overall. The mortality rate was 6%. The disease occurred in patients with ages from 4 months to 60 years, but 89% of cases were in patients <21 years. The largest number of cases were in the age group 5–9 years (n= 54), but the highest incidence occurred in children less than 1 year of age (72·8/100000 per year). The male/female ratio was 1·2. Cases occurred all year round with little seasonal variation. Of the 178 cases, 173 were biologically confirmed. Serogroup analysis of strains from 135 patients revealed A = 1, B = 124, C = 10. Forty-four group B strains from 1985–7 were serotyped: 15:P1.3 = 36, 15:NT = 4, 4:P1.3 = 2, NT:NT = 2. Ten of 11 of the outbreak strains tested were sulfadiazine-resistant. This is the first recognized outbreak caused by a Gp B:15 strain in South America. It shares many of the characteristics of outbreaks caused by closely related strains in Europe, such as a predilection for older children and adolescents, sulfadiazine-resistance, and sustained high attack rates. The Iquique strain (B:15:P1.3) belongs to the same genetic clone (ET-5 complex) as the Norway (B:15:P1.16) and the Cuban (B:4:P1.15) strains.

Abstract. We carry out a nonlinear time series analysis motivated by dynamical systems theory to investigate the links between temperatures on the eastern South Pacific coast, influenced by the Humboldt Current System, and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. To this aim, we use a set of 16 oceanic and atmospheric temperature time series from Chilean coastal stations distributed between 18 and 45∘ S. The spectral analysis indicates periodicities that can be related to both internal and external forcing, involving not only ENSO, but also the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, the Southern Annual Mode, the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation and the lunar nodal cycle. The asymptotic neural network test for chaos based on the largest global Lyapunov exponent indicates that the temperature dynamics along the Chilean coast is not chaotic. We use local Lyapunov exponents to characterize the short-term stability of the series. Using a cross-entropy test, we find that two stations in northern Chile, one oceanic (Iquique) and one atmospheric (Arica), present a significant positive cross-dependence between local Lyapunov exponents and ENSO. Iquique is the station that presents the greater number of regional characteristics and correlates with ENSO differently from the rest. The unique large-scale study area, combined with time series from hitherto unused sources (Chilean naval records), reveals the nonlinear dynamics of climate variability in Chile.

To investigate the rupture process and strong-motion generation of the [Formula: see text] 8.2 Iquique, Northern Chile, earthquake in 2014, we estimated kinematic source models from waveform inversion and back-projection analyses using strong-motion records. A slip model derived from the waveform inversion using the low-frequency (0.02–0.125[Formula: see text]Hz) velocities is characterized by a large slip area localized 50[Formula: see text]km south of the epicenter with a peak slip of 10[Formula: see text]m, and a deeper slip area with a peak slip above 2[Formula: see text]m located below the coast. The main rupture of these areas started 25[Formula: see text]s after the initial break generating two pronounced phases observed in most of the records. The landward slip area ruptured for about 10[Formula: see text]s generating the first impulsive phase, while the offshore largest slip area ruptured for 20[Formula: see text]s creating a longer duration phase observed later. Results from a back-projection analysis based on stacking of envelopes of 5–10-Hz accelerations indicate that the high-frequency radiation propagated down-dip towards the coast, reaching its maximum value from 25[Formula: see text]s to 40[Formula: see text]s, far away from the shallow main slip area obtained from low-frequency waveform inversion. Our results suggest a clear depth dependence of the seismic wave radiation during the Iquique earthquake.

Abstract Today's society demands minimum standards of satisfaction that improve the quality of life of people. People in a situation of disability are not strangers. In Chile, as of 2010, Law n ° 20,422 is promulgated, which establishes the rules on equal opportunities and social inclusion for people with disabilities. Changing the social paradigm to the concept of inclusion of people with disabilities in all areas, especially in the educational area, where the state and private have tried to recognize their duties in this area. However, there is no clear delineation in higher education. That is why the need is generated as an institution Santo Tomás, Iquique headquarters to create a study that detects the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that hinder the academic performance and / or permanence in higher education of people with disabilities belonging to this institution. For this purpose, an exploratory research is carried out, of a descriptive qualitative nature, with a naturalistic approach, since it explores multiple realities of teachers and students of higher education in a situation of disability. This study concludes mainly that the extrinsic factors associated to the academic body and managers are those who have major obstacles in terms of academic performance and / or permanence of people with disabilities, in Santo Tomás Iquique headquarters.

The eviction of migrants from Plaza Brasil, in the city of Iquique, an act that was questioned due to the violence used by public forces, revealed not just the humanitarian problem involved, but also a turning point in attempts to normalize a process where cities have been altered by the exodus of migrants. This study looks into the impacts generated by the successive stages of migration within the Venezuelan migratory flow, one characterized by the great vulnerability of these migrants. Since the start of 2020, amid a health crisis and border closures, they have entered Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Chile by land using unauthorized crossings, to find better living conditions in these destinations. Here, the approaches which connect flows and transformations as responses to reproduction factors of global society, with those that conceive mobility as a “creative force” that interacts autonomously with these structures, are discussed. To this end, mobility in the historical centers of three cities located in border transit and entry zones to each country, where the interrelation in public space has been transformed and stressed, is explored, namely Piura, in Peru, and Iquique and Antofagasta in Chile. The results show similarities in the dynamics and transformations generated. Given the vulnerable condition of migrants, there is an increase in the occupation of public space, through autonomous actions of self-management and organization, as well as local resistance, demonstrating the relevance of mobility in modern society. All-in-all, it is recommended to adopt a differentiated agenda to understand the connection between migrants and places during the mobility experience.

Abstract. Marine stratocumulus clouds of the eastern Pacific play an essential role in the earth's energy and radiation budget. Parts of these clouds off the western coast of South America form the major source of water to the hyperarid Atacama Desert coastal region at the northern coast of Chile. For the first time, a full year of vertical structure observations of the coastal stratocumulus and their environment is presented and analyzed. Installed at Iquique Airport in northern Chile in 2018/2019, three state-of-the-art remote sensing instruments provide vertical profiles of cloud macro- and micro-physical properties, wind, turbulence, and temperature as well as integrated values of water vapor and liquid water. Distinct diurnal and seasonal patterns of the stratocumulus life cycle are observed. Embedded in a land–sea circulation with a superimposed southerly wind component, maximum cloud occurrence and vertical extent occur at night but minima at local noon. Nighttime clouds are maintained by cloud-top cooling, whereas afternoon clouds reappear within a convective boundary layer driven through local moisture advection from the Pacific. During the night, these clouds finally re-connect to the maritime clouds in the upper branch of the land–sea circulation. The diurnal cycle is much more pronounced in austral winter, with lower, thicker, and more abundant (5×) clouds than in summer. This can be associated with different sea surface temperature (SST) gradients in summer and winter, leading to a stable or neutral stratification of the maritime boundary layer at the coast of the Atacama Desert in Iquique.

AbstractThe new mineral leverettite (IMA 2013-011), ideally Cu3CoCl2(OH)6, was found at the Torrecillas mine, Salar Grande, Iquique Province, Chile, where it occurs as a supergene alteration phase in association with akaganéite, anhydrite, chalcophanite, goethite, halite, manganite, pyrite, quartz and todorokite. Crystals of leverettite are steep rhombohedra to 1 mm with {101} prominent and modified by {001}, sometimes forming V-shaped twins by reflection on {10}. The crystals can also form finger-like, parallel stacked growths along the c axis. The new mineral is medium to deep green in colour and has a light green streak. Crystals are transparent with a vitreous lustre. Mohs hardness is ∼3 and the crystals have a brittle tenacity, a perfect cleavage on {101} and a conchoidal fracture. The measured density is 3.64(2) g cm–3 and calculated density based on the empirical formula is 3.709 g cm–3. Optically, leverettite is uniaxial (–) with ω and ε > 1.8 and exhibits pleochroism with O (bluish green) > E (slightly yellowish green). The empirical formula, determined from electron-microprobe analyses is Cu3(Co0.43Cu0.40Mn0.17Ni0.07Mg0.01)Σ1.08Cl1.87O6.13H6. Leverettite is trigonal (hexagonal), space group Rm, unit-cell parameters a = 6.8436(6) and c = 14.064(1) Å, V = 570.42(8) Å3, Z = 3. The eight strongest X-ray powder diffraction lines are [dobs Å (I)(hkl)]: 5.469(90)(101), 4.701(18)(003), 2.905(22)(021), 2.766(100)(113), 2.269(66)(024), 1.822(26)(033), 1.711(33)(220), 1.383(23)(128). The structure, refined to R1 = 0.023 for 183 Fo > 4σF reflections, shows leverettite to be isostructural with herbertsmithite and gillardite.

SUMMARY The M= 8.1, 1 April 2014 Iquique earthquake, which broke part of the northern Chile seismic gap, was preceded by a strong foreshock sequence starting early January 2014. The reported analysis of the continuous records of the nearby GPS stations from the Integrated Plate Observatory Chile, North Chile array lead to contradictory results concerning the existence and location of slow slip events (SSEs) on the interplate contact. Resolving this controversy is an important issue, as although many SSEs are reported in subduction zones, only a few were found to be precursory to large earthquakes. Here we show that the records of a long base tiltmeter installed near Iquique, when corrected for coseismic steps, long-term drift, tidal signals and oceanic and atmospheric loading, show significant residual signals. These can be modelled with a sequence of four SSEs located close to Iquique. Their signature was already reported on some GPS stations, but their source was then characterized with a very low resolution in time and space, leading to contradicting models. With the tilt records, we can rule out the previously proposed models with a single large SSE closer to the main shock. Combining tilt with GPS records greatly improves the resolution of GPS alone, and one could locate their sources 100–180 km south–southeast to the main shock epicentre, with moment magnitudes between 5.8 and 6.2, at the edge of the main aftershock asperities. These moderate SSEs thus did not directly trigger the main shock, but contributed to trigger the main foreshock and the main aftershock. Only the sensitivity and resolution of the tiltmeter, added to the GPS records, allowed us to describe with unprecedented accuracy this precursory process as a cascade of cross-triggered, short-term aseismic slip events and earthquakes on the interplate contact. This three months of precursory activation appears to be the final acceleration burst of a weaker, longer term SSE which started mid-2013, already reported, with a moment release history which we could quantify. From the methodological point of view, our study takes advantage of an interesting complementarity of tilt and GPS measurements, due to their different dependence in distance to the source of strain, which turns out to be very efficient for resolving location and moment of strain sources, even when both instruments are close to each other. It finally demonstrates the efficient removal of sequences of small or even undetected coseismic steps from high resolution tilt record signal in order to retrieve the purely aseismic signal, a presently impossible task for high time resolution GPS records due to low signal to noise.

This work presents the analysis of resonance in two of the main cities along the northern coast of Chile, where a large tsunamigenic potential remains despite recent earthquakes. By combining a modal analysis solving the theory of free and forced oscillations, with the analysis of background spectra derived from in situ measurements, the spatial and temporal structure of the modes are recovered. Comparison with spectra from three tsunamis of different characteristics shows that the modes found have been excited by past events. Moreover, a difference in the overall response between locations is found. Arica is more sensitive to the characteristics of the tsunami source, whereas Iquique shows a smaller dependency. Results are further contrasted with other methodologies with good agreement. These findings are relevant in characterizing the tsunami hazard in the area, and the methodology can be further extended to other areas along the Chilean coast.
