ABSTRACT: In the 1960s, the FBI’s counterintelligence program (COINTELPRO) routinely infiltrated campus antiwar and civil rights groups, investigating thousands of students with the aim of discrediting their activism and destroying their career prospects. After a Senate committee led by Frank Church exposed this practice, the FBI disavowed it and applied a heightened standard for initiating investigations at universities. There is reason to believe, however, that federal law enforcement is facing pressure to relax its self-restraint and investigate pro-Palestinian student activists using a tool not at its disposal in the heyday of COINTELPRO: a nebulous federal statute that imposes prison sentences of up to twenty years for providing “material support or resources to a foreign terrorist organization.” This statute criminalizes public advocacy that is done under the direction of or in coordination with foreign terrorist groups. There are few legal constraints, however, that would prevent a motivated FBI from using pro-Palestinian speech as grounds for investigating students who have no connection to such a group.

Since the rise of Adolf Hitler in Germany in 1933, German opponents of Nazism had look for exile on the American continent, forming complex political movements across the American continent. The presence of the Free German Movement and the Council for the Democratic German in Los Angeles has alerted the US authorities, especially because of evidence of their links with communism and their relations with political movements in Latin America. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the role of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in investigating German anti-Nazi exile groups in California and south of the United States border in the context of World War II.

The number of serial killers, those who have murdered three or more people at separate times in the United States,1 has declined from its peak 128 in 1987 to just 15 in 2015.2 But people’s fascination with them has not waned. The Netflix drama Mindhunter aired in October 2017 and gave true-crime fanatics a Hollywood view of the early days of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) work on criminal profiling and its involvement with local law enforcement agencies on investigations.

This article examines the 2015 Baltimore uprisings that emerged in the wake of Freddie Gray’s death and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) covert aerial surveillance of the protesters. It does so by investigating the records that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) extracted from the government agency through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The article first traces the process of discovering and circulating this corpus of information. It then considers what the digital disclosures, including 18-plus hours of aerial surveillance footage, can reveal about the racial and technological dimensions of contemporary state surveillance. In considering the agency’s strategies of public admission, I develop the concept of transparency optics and identify some of its potential logics at work. I then discuss these records’ epistemological limits, such as the shortcomings of analyzing digital processes through ocularcentric approaches. Finally, this article contrasts the FBI videos’ panoptic vantage of the protests with the embodied, ground-level perspective of a local participant’s documentary film.

Using a nationwide sample of reported rape cases collected by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI; 389 victims; 89% stranger rapes), this study investigates assumptions about self-protective behaviors for rape victims. Past research on victim resistance strategies often specifies active resistance as self-protective, inadvertently underestimating the potential for biologically based reactions, such as tonic immobility, to be self-protective as well. Results confirm that rape victims who were verbally and physically immobile during the attack were less likely to be injured and have force used against them. In addition, victims who were verbally immobile suffered a less severe attack. The results indicate that immobility may protect the victim from increased injury, force, and severity of the attack. Implications for the legal and public definition of consent are discussed.

Human health is seriously threatened by mycotoxin contamination, yet health risk assessments are typically based on just one mycotoxin, potentially excluding the additive or competitive interactions between co-occurring mycotoxins. In this investigation, we evaluated the individual or combined toxicological effects of three fumonisin-family B mycotoxins: fumonisin B1 (FB1), fumonisin B2 (FB2), and fumonisin B3 (FB3), by using porcine intestinal epithelial cells (IPEC). IPEC cells were exposed to various concentrations (2.5–40 μM) for 48 h, and a cell counting kit (CCK8) was used to determine cell vitality. Firstly, we discovered that they might inhibit cell viability. Additionally, the cytotoxicity of FB1 was significantly greater than that of FB2 and FB3. The results also indicated that the combinations of FB1-FB2, FB2-FB3, and FB1-FB2-FB3 showed synergistically toxicological effects at the ID10-ID50 levels and antagonistic effects at the ID75-ID90 levels. In addition, the FB1-FB3 exposure was also synergistic at the ID10-ID25 level. We also found that myriocin and resveratrol alleviated the cytotoxicity induced by fumonisin in IPEC cells. In all, this study may contribute to the determination of legal limits, the optimization of risk assessment for fumonisins in food and feed, and the development of new methods to alleviate fumonisin toxicity.

This article revolves around a deceptively simple question: Why did the FBI investigate bandleader Duke Ellington, the African American capitalist, political conservative, and pronounced Christian, as a communist threat in the 1930s through the Cold War? Answering this question involves situating the FBI’s “domestic security” program as product and productive of overlapping racial and sexual politics and investigating the FBI’s anti-Semitic conspiracy theory that Ellington’s early-career promoter Irving Mills (a.k.a. Isadore Minsky) was a Jewish communist intent on capitalizing on the racial transgressions of jazz pleasures. In telling this story, I further develop contemporary scholarship on the concept of racialized heteronationalism as nascent in surveillance and the state, as well as demonstrate the long history of US enforcement agencies’ reliance upon race and sexuality as categories for defining domestic security and surveillance protocols.

Foodborne illness (FBI) disproportionately affects children and minority populations in the U.S. A mixed methods convergence model design was used to explore the food safety knowledge and behavior of Native American (NA) and Hispanic (Hisp) caregivers in New Mexico who prepare food for young children in the home. Quantitative and qualitative research methods (a validated food safety knowledge survey (r=.793) and focus group interviews) were implemented in parallel within each ethnic group, the datasets were analyzed separately per group and the results were converged at the point of interpretation. Equal priority was given to each dataset type. The Health Belief Model was used as a theoretical framework to guide qualitative inquiry. An integrative summary of the quantitative and qualitative results was created and meta-inferences identified contradictory and confirmatory elements of the evidence across both groups. A purposeful sample of fifty-five participants in New Mexico (28 NA; 27 Hisp) completed the food safety knowledge survey and participated in focus groups. Quantitative composite mean scores for the Native American (NA) group (M=66%) and Hispanic (His) group (M=65%) indicated low food safety knowledge. A MANOVA conducted to compare the two groups’ mean knowledge scores found no significant difference between groups on the food safety subscales [Wilks’ ? = .852, F(6,44) = 1.278, p = .287, ?2 = .162].The lowest scoring subscale for both groups was ‘cook’, addressing proper cooking methods (NA=.61, Hisp=.55). Mixed methods analyses revealed that participants overall perceived moderate to high self-efficacy regarding safe food preparation, food purchasing, cooking food, and storing of food, however, the related food safety knowledge item scores were low. Food safety knowledge was often inconsistent with reported food safety practices. Moderate/high self-efficacy may provide a false sense of low risk for FBI.

Domestic intelligence is very important in preventing disorder while ensuring unity and security during a time of national crisis. However, if uncontrolled, domestic intelligence can be subject to political misuse, which causes serious damage both to individuals and to democratic institutions. There are various theoretical explanations for political misuse of domestic intelligence. The political use of domestic intelligence is best explained by the sociological theory of unfulfilled needs. On the other hand, political counterintelligence can be best explained by Threat Theory. In order for a domestic intelligence organization to be effective, its organizational discretion must be limited by establishing clear legislation that is not secret, on the focus, limits, and techniques of domestic intelligence. This system must be supported by a multi-level control mechanism.

Resumo:
The results are presented here of multi-wavelength observations centred on two fields of the Leiden-Berkeley Deep Survey, which form the basis for a study of the population and cosmic evolution of the high redshift, low power, Fanaroff & Riley class I (FRI) radio galaxies. These fields, Hercules.1 and Lynx.2, contain a complete sample of 81 radio sources with S_1.4GHz > 0.5 mJy within 0.6 square degrees. Wide-field, ~1.5 arcsec resolution, radio observations, along with near infra-red and optical imaging, and some multi-object spectroscopy, are used to select the best high-redshift FRI candidates, giving 37 in total. Currently, the host galaxy identification fraction is 86% with 11 sources remaining unidentified at a level of r > 25.2 (Hercules; 4 sources) or r > 24.4 (Lynx; 7 sources) and K > 20. Spectroscopic redshifts are determined for 49% of the sample and photometric redshift estimates are presented for the sample sources without spectra or previously published results. 95% of the 37 best FRI high-redshift candidate sources were then observed using sub-arcsecond radio resolution, with the aim of detecting extended emission with respect to compact core features - vital for unambiguous morphological classification. The nature of the radio observations meant that 10 extra sample sources could also be included in the data. Lower resolution data were also taken for the Lynx.2 field sources to provide a comparison with the 1.5 arcsec data. The classification of the entire radio sample is done in two stages. Sources which showed clear extension are classified by morphology alone, whereas sources with no obvious or weak extension were classified using a combination of morphology and flux density loss in the higher resolution data indicative of resolved out extended emission. Five groups are used for this - 'Certain FRIs', 'Likely FRIs', 'Possible FRIs', 'Unclassifiable sources' (for those not included in the higher resolution observations) and 'Not FRIs'. The final group numbers are 8, 10, 24, 33 and 6 for groups 1-5 respectively. The space densities of the maximum, probable and minimum FRIs are then calculated and compared to two previously published measurements of the local value, and with the behaviour of the strongest FRII sources. The results for all three groups show density enhancements of factors of 5-9 at z ~ 1.0 which implies cosmic evolution of the FRI population; this enhancement is also in very good agreement with that predicted by previous models. The behaviour of the FRI/FRII dividing luminosity, as a function of host galaxy absolute magnitude, at the different cosmic epochs of the sample, and for two different star formation histories, is also investigated. A shift to brighter absolute magnitudes is found to be inconsistent with the data but this conclusion is weak due to the lack of knowledge of the host galaxy stellar populations, and the small number of sources in the sample.

This qualitative study utilized elite, semi-structured interviews of a purposive sample of the first women who became Special Agents and supervisors in the highly gendered Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The historical context for their experiences is significant in light of social and legal mandates for equal opportunity and the increased interest in gender-specific research that took place during the 1970s. Literature relating to feminist perspectives, the integration of women into nontraditional occupations, and the gendered nature of bureaucracy supported the conceptual framework. Guided by educational criticism, four strategies were used recursively: typological analysis was used to define categories of data; interpretive analysis was used to identify patterns and connections in the data; evaluation was used to attach value to the data beyond the participants, and thematics were used to analyze pervasive messages within the data as a whole. Typologies included the choice of nontraditional careers, decision-making, efficacy as leaders, and efforts to negotiate the FBI’s bureaucracy. Three metaphors were used to interpret connections and patterns according to feminist standpoint theory, career self-efficacy theory, and various organizational principles. A Supergirl metaphor highlighted women’s unique knowledge and complex roles; a Target metaphor highlighted complex patterns for high achievement and response to obstacles, and a Clubhouse metaphor highlighted masculine culture, the role of rules, and changes to an organization’s equilibrium. Evaluation analysis addressed the moral obligation for women in leadership and the need for organizational diversity. Themes in the data included occupational pride, the challenge to manage multiple roles, an absence of relationship support, and inconsistency in feminist views.

Resumo:
In this body of work, the interactions of coagulation factor XI with high molecular weight kininogen and laminin-111 were investigated using various biophysical methods such as surface plasmon resonance technology and protein x-ray crystallography. These techniques were utilised to identify and characterize key binding sites. Prior to the start of this PhD study, a series of FXI binding peptides were developed by Novo Nordisk A/S (Denmark) with the aim of using them for FXI purification. Sequence alignment of these peptides revealed the shared tripeptide motif 'DFP' that is the main focus of this PhD investigation. This motif is also found in HMWK that circulates bound to FXI in plasma and in extracellular matrix laminin-111. Initially, the expression levels of human recombinant coagulation FXI is investigated. Following this, the successful co-crystallization of coagulation FXI with two 'DFP' binding peptides lead to the identification of a key hydrophobic pocket in the underside of the Apple 2 domain of FXI. The stoichiometry of the FXI-HMWK complex was also investigated using size exclusion chromatography and Edman degradation. Our data suggests that 1 FXI dimer circulates bound to 1 HMWK dimer. Surface plasmon resonance technology was utilised to probe the equilibrium binding constants of coagulation FXI interaction with full length HMWK and laminin. This study revealed multiple binding sites are involved in the protein complex formation. The 'DFP' motif is the shared binding motif between HMWK and laminin to FXI. The motif 'SDDDWIPDIQID' which is found N-terminus to the 'DFP' motif on HMWK was also identified to be important for HMWK binding to FXI. This part of the study also revealed that the peptides, domain 6 of HMWK and Laminin-111's G-like domain bound selectively to the apple 2 domain of FXI when compared with the apple 3 domain of FXI. Finally, coagulation assays were performed using platelet poor human plasma using activated partial thromboplastin time and calibrated automated thrombogram assays. We found that the 'DFP' peptides were able to alter coagulation parameters such as delaying the start of thrombin generation and reducing total thrombin generated in the absence of tissue factor. We also found that these `DFP' peptides did not interfere with the extrinsic pathway of coagulation.

This study develops and tests several hypotheses regarding the influence and the reliability of a range of variables related to the firm-specific interest of multinational corporations. This thesis presents an examination of foreign direct investment behaviour of the Triad countries’ firms from the firm-specific factors point of view using a large panel data covering 1985-2011. Adopting a firm-specific approach to FDI behaviour, it provides a two-stage analyses to find out (1) the probability of firm characteristics’ and firm specific factors’ affecting firms’ FDI decisions and (2) these factors’ role in determining the amount of FDI to be undertaken. Overall, empirical findings show support for the firm specific assets’ significant role in FDI behaviour.

AbstractA research program investigating correctable issues in Functional Binocular Vision (FBV) related optometric variables to responses from a symptom survey and reading test results. The study was mounted with no explicit attention to measurement modeling. Data from this research program were retrospectively analyzed with the aims of evaluating the potential for learning from the existing observations, and for improving the study design in future iterations. Results suggest that the physical and psychological measurements of vision combine into a model of FBV that could be standardized and deployed for use in diagnosing significant numbers of untreated vision problems negatively impacting learning outcomes.

In this paper we analyze the applicability of seismic full-waveform inversion (FWI) for investigation of tells, which are often characterized by heterogeneous and small-scale stratigraphy. Major aim is to identify location and shape of settlement layers and house remains. Furthermore, a paleochannel, which is important to understand the interaction between tell and the surrounding landscape, was found at the tell flank.

The results of the detailed investigations of behavior of lignites Kolubara and Kovin, in fluidized bed combustion are presented in the paper. Investigation was carried out due to the interest of the Serbian Electric Power Production Company to use CFBC boilers in the process of refurbishment of old pulverized coal combustion boilers. As a part of a feasibility study for CFBC use in power plants in Serbia, investigation of combustion characteristics of lignites was performed using original methodology introduced many years ago by Laboratory for Thermal Engineering and Energy. Methodology was approved by numerous investigations of more than 20 Yugoslav coals for FBC combustion, with the aim to determine design data for bubbling FBC boilers. The main attention in present investigation was paid to the problem of using methodology developed for bubbling FBC in the conditions present in CFBC boilers. Four samples of Kolubara lignite, with heat capacity from 2.5 to 8.5 MJ/kg, and different ash contents were investigated, and also lignite Kovin in the same range of heat capacity. Investigations were performed in three phases: (1) ultimate and proximate analysis, determination of ash sintering temperature by standard method and in fluidized bed laboratory oven, (2) investigations in laboratory fluidized bed furnace and determination of coal particle fragmentation, burning rate, start-up temperature and self-sulfure-capture and (3) investigation of combustion in pilot-plant in stationary combustion conditions. In conclusion, suitability of results obtained in BFBC conditions is approved, and earlier statement that lignites are suitable for BFBC is confirmed by the statement that lignites are even more suitable for burning in CFBC boilers. Considering differences between combustion and flow conditions in bubbling and circulating FBC boilers, behavior of the lignites in CFBC is discussed in details and optimal regime parameters of the CFBC boilers are determined. The results obtained will be used by Serbian Electric Power Production Company for evaluation of bid for CFBC boiler implementation in refurbishment of old thermal power plants.

With the information and communications technology (ICT) development, the e-scooter sharing services have been launched on the Taiwanese market since 2018. This study forms an investigation into the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology evaluation method based on empirical research and survey studies to investigate the factors that may influence the user acceptance of the shared e-scooters. A questionnaire has been designed to obtain subjective feedback after using the shared service from the participants. 157 individuals participated in the experiment and completed the subjective rating. The results indicate that the model constructs of performance expectancy, social influence, price value, and habit are useful predictors of the consumer behavioral intention towards using shared e-scooters. In addition, consumer perceived "I prefer to use shared e-scooters rather than private scooters" is a moderate variable that affects the relationship between the performance expectancy, social influence, price value, and habit and the consumer behavioral intention.
