The development of intellectual property rights is influenced by technological developments. One form of intellectual property is a patent that is produced in the form of inventions or new inventions by inventor employees who work in the official or government or private sector. The purposes of this study are: (1) To find out the doctrine used in patent renewal, (2) Legal protection against employee invention for employees in the government sphere with private companies, and (3) Patent ownership arrangements for inventor employees in Asian countries. The research method used is normative juridical by using secondary data. This study’s results indicate differences in the protection of ownership of inventions produced by inventors or employees from several countries, such as Indonesia, Japan and the United States. Some patents are owned by the inventor’s employees and some are owned by the employer.

Abstract Background: Tunneled central venous catheters (CVC) were developed five decades ago. Since then, several clinician-inventors have created a variety of catheters with different functions. Indeed, many catheters have been named after their inventor. Many have wondered who the inventors were of each catheter, and what specifically inspired their inventions. Many of these compelling stories have yet to be told. Data source: A literature review of common catheters and personal communication with inventors. Only first person accounts from inventors or those close to the invention were used. Conclusions: CVCs are now essential devices that have saved countless lives. Though the inventors have earned the honor of naming their catheters, it may be reasonable to consider more consistent terminology to describe these catheters to avoid confusion.

The purpose of this research is to compare the previous stereotypes of the scientist image and the current stereotypes of the inventor image among Korean students. For this purpose, three primary schools located in the metropolitan area of Korea were selected under a convenience sampling method, with one class selected for each of the 2nd, 4th, and 6th grades of each school. The conclusions of this research are as follows. First, analyzing students' stereotypes of the inventor image showed that older students had more stereotypes about inventors than younger students did. Second, as a result of analyzing the images according to each indicator, Korean students were found to have stereotypes about the inventor. Third, the symbol of research was expressed together with one of the science-related experiment tool and the making-related experiment tool. Fourth, primary students perceived the inventor as mainly male. Male students mostly drew male inventors and female students mostly drew female inventors. Based on the conclusions obtained through this research, various educational implications to be reflected in primary technology education were suggested to escape the stereotypes of the inventor’s image. Keywords: Inventor images, invention education, technology education, science education, South Korea

University–industry technology transfer (UITT) plays an important role in the construction of the national pharmaceutical innovation system. The speculations of a faculty inventor may hinder the successful transfer of pharmaceutical research results. This paper divides the specific process of the transformation of pharmaceutical research results into two parts: (1) an evolutionary game between faculty inventors and universities; and (2) a Stackelberg game between faculty inventors and pharmaceutical companies. Further, we carry out numerical simulations to analyze the impact of transformation success rate, income distribution coefficient, and a faculty inventor’s future working years on the transformation of pharmaceutical research results. The findings indicated that whether a combination of action strategies of faculty inventors and universities can evolve to the optimal equilibrium is determined by many factors, such as the technological transaction price of the pharmaceutical company and the reward or the income obtained by the faculty inventor. The transformation success rate and the income distribution coefficient are the key factors that affect the faculty inventor’s will and the behavior of the pharmaceutical company. The conclusions of this paper contribute to the research on how we can improve the success rate of research results and avoid resource waste, and provide a decision-making reference for the management of pharmaceutical research results in universities.

Independent inventors have generally been overlooked in research on innovation. This study helps fill the knowledge gap. A survey of independent inventors in the USA showed that their inventions tended towards hardware/tool, household products, industrial/commercial products, novelty items and toys/games/hobbies. Thirty-nine per cent of the respondents generated sales from their inventions and approximately 20% profited from them. Inventors who established a company to commercialize their inventions were most likely to achieve sales. However, inventors who licensed their inventions were more likely to achieve higher sales levels than those who commercialized them only via their own company, or by selling their inventions outright.

The advancement of AI, especially generative AI, has brought the inventor designation debate back to the forefront. Can an AI system be considered an inventor when it does not have legal personality? This paradox, highlighted by the DABUS case, requires the exploration of both practical and legal as-pects. Even though the EPO considers AI-generated inventions to be “computer-implemented inven-tions”, the key question that more and more people are asking is this: Can AI really invent something new independently, or is it just a tool for human inventors? Most countries, including those in the EU, maintain that only humans can be inventors and therefore patents cannot be granted to machines, regardless of their capabilities, thus supporting the European human-centred approach. To elucidate this complex issue, we aim to analyze cases like DABUS, taking into account the advances in AI and the position of experts. This will help identify challenges and potentially redefine the legal landscape for AI-generated inventions in the future.

Drawing on a sample of 415 inventors who have won the ‘R&D 100 award’ for the most important breakthrough inventions between 2005 and 2014, this dissertation proposes empirical research on three topics within the field of inventors, invention and innovation. The work consists of three essays. The first essay will present the summary results of a comprehensive survey of R&D awards recipients: ‘The R&D 100 award inventor survey’. In this essay, we will provide information on the characteristics of the inventors in terms of demography and education, the context in which their innovative activity occurred, and the value of their innovations. Comparison of some of our findings with those of prior surveys will allow us to draw interesting conclusions concerning the changing characteristics of inventors and their inventive activity over time and across industrial and organizational contexts. In the second essay we will consider a sample of important awarded inventions from our survey and estimate the probability for the invention to be patented (or not) as a function of its characteristics, the characteristics of the inventor, and the characteristics of the organization. We will argue that by taking innovations that won an important prize (i.e. R&D 100 Awards) will allow us to evaluate the determinants of innovations occurring inside and outside the patent system. To perform the analysis, we will employ a logit regression. In terms of patent propensity our findings will show that inventors’ prior experience in patenting, the organization context they work in (i.e. firms) and the team size they belong to positively affect the probability to patent. We will further provide evidence on the determinants of the value and the quality of those inventions that are patented by employing traditional indicators based on forward patent citations as well as alternative indicators taken from ‘The R&D 100 award inventor survey’. Results will suggest that patented award-winning inventions are more valuable when matched to inventions in the same technological class that have been patented but not awarded. Finally, the third essay will explore the mobility of inventors that have won the ‘R&D 100 award’ for the most important breakthrough inventions multiple times. We will use detailed information concerning whether the inventor move or not after receiving the award during the 2005-2014 period, and construct indicators of experience other than job at the time of the award and indicators of job tenure at the time of the award. We will employ Kaplan-Meier non parametric analysis to highlight systematic differences across different type of inventors in terms of mobility. We will then investigate the probability of multi-award winners to move after being awarded the innovation prize by means of a complementary-log-logistic model. Results will indicate that inventors’ previous and current performance with reference to patents and publications have no influence on mobility. Results will instead provide evidence that being an entrepreneur at the time of the awards is positively associated with inventors’ mobility.

My research seeks to understand the behaviour of workers and firms and how their decisions affect labour market outcomes. My PhD dissertation consists of three separate Chapters that use detailed historical, census and administrative data to gain insights into the mechanisms at play when incentives for production and location decisions change. Chapter 1 asks whether financial incentives can induce inventors to innovate more. I exploit a large reduction in the patent fee in the United Kingdom in 1884 to distinguish between its effect on increased efforts to invent, and a decrease in patent quality due to a lower quality threshold. For this analysis I create a detailed new dataset of 54,000 British inventors with renewal information for each patent. In the longer run high-quality patenting increases by over 100 percent, and the share of new patents due to greater effort accounts for three quarters of the pre-reform share of high-quality patents. To test for the presence of credit constraints I generate two wealth proxies from inventor names and addresses, and find a larger innovation response for inventors with lower wealth. These results indicate efficiency gains from decreasing the cost of inventing and in addition, from relaxing credit constraints. In Chapter 2 we assess the effects of changes in ethnic neighbourhood composition in England and Wales. A change in social housing allocations in the 1990s serves as instrument for changes in the local ethnic composition. For the analysis we create a dataset of highly disaggregated census geographies for 1991-2011. The results imply that an exogenous increase in social housing minority share by 10 percentage points raises the minority share in private housing by 1.2 percentage points initially. This sorting effect is larger for privately rented than for privately owned housing. We further show that an increase in the minority share leads to higher local population growth and a small decrease in house prices in the longer run. Chapter 3 proposes a new approach for analysing responses to comprehensive labour market reforms. Using detailed micro data we evaluate the German Hartz reforms that aimed at reducing unemployment. The timing of the reforms affects the model parameters, which are estimated using matched data on 430,000 workers in 340,000 firms. Contrary to previous findings, our analysis shows that the reforms marginally reduced unemployment at the cost of a pronounced decline in wages. Low-skilled workers suffered the largest wage losses. Furthermore, we decompose the contribution of each reform wave on employment and wages, and document a structural shift in the factors that govern overall wage dispersion.

Resumo:
The article deals with the problem facing Latvian inventors in how to develop the idea to a real product. There are often cases where innovative ideas “migrate” from original inventors to other inventors, when they turn to them to seek support for developing and supporting the idea. The main components of the guidelines are the establishment of a patent application and, in general, a description of the entire patent acquisition process and the creation of a life cycle analysis using the SimaPro software. The article is intended primarily for the development of environmentally friendly inventions, which is why the life cycle analysis is one of the main components of the article, to make it possible to conclude whether the production and use of the new product will not result in a higher “ecological footprint” than previously used technologies, paying particular attention to the inventor stage in order to accurately develop a life-cycle analysis. The article does not only explore the necessary theoretical knowledge of the realisation of the idea to the product, but also looks at the pilot case, a practical example of an innovative “dust co-firing burner” compared to the conventional natural gas burner. The life-cycle analysis compares the following steps: manufacture of plants, transportation of plants and special emphasis on the combustion phase of fuels, three scenarios are examined: a natural gas burner burning natural gas, a dust burner in which natural gas is co-incinerated and fine wood particles − dust and a dust burner burning. biomethane and wood dust. The use of such an installation would not only reduce emissions from the replacement of natural gas by wood dust, but also allow energy companies to work more effectively, as it would be possible to regulate the proportion of different fuels depending on demand, because the fuels have different heat of combustion. The article establishes a methodology to analyse the quality and implementation of inventions in response to the following key questions: − how to identify original ideas and how to protect authors from the migration of ideas; − how to collect and analyse the risks associated with migration of ideas; − how to use life cycle analysis for the assessment of the “ecological footprint” of the invention.

Resumo:
Going back to the days of Leonardo DaVinci, and perhaps earlier, there has been significant interest in being able to fly vertically and hover. These tasks require innovation, engineering, and scientific knowhow in many disciplines and then blending them together to create a Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) flying machine. Vertical flight enthusiasts recognize just a few of the names of great inventors that set the foundation for our great VTOL industry today. However, there are many individuals whose names are either forgotten or were never in the limelight of VTOL aircraft developed over the past 80 years. A VTOL machine is an ingenious contraption of innovation in mechanical systems, materials, aerodynamics, flight controls, and structures. Over time add to these inventions the advancements in integrated modular avionics, electronics, electro-mechanical actuators, computers, mathematics, vibration suppression, and fiber optics to name a few. However, the most important contribution to our VTOL advancements is from people. Not just technically trained people, but inventors, pilots, managers, professors and the investors willing to direct personal, public, and corporate funds to the Research, Development, Testing and Engineering necessary to build a VTOL aircraft. This paper presents concepts to fill-in our history leveraging a crowd-sourcing model.
