Active acoustics (AA) systems are used to electronically modify the acoustics of a room (e.g., in live music venues). AA systems have an inherent feedback component and can suffer from instability and coloration artifacts resulting from too high feedback gains. State-of-the-art methods can improve system stability and coloration, usually at the cost of complex implementations and long parameter-tuning sessions. They can also cause sound artifacts due to time-varying components, limiting the enhancement at low frequencies. This work proposes a time-invariant feedback attenuation method for low frequencies based on a modal reverberator. The attenuation is achieved through destructive acoustic interference, obtained via phase shifts between the input and output signals. The analyzed frequency range is 0–500 Hz, where the room transfer functions are considered highly invariant over time. The results show a gain-before-instability increase of more than 5 dB for a modal reverberator with high mode density in this frequency range. The improvement is also stable for low-magnitude changes in the room transfer functions over time. The proposed method provides a robust AA system with artificial reverberation for the low-frequency range and can be used alongside other established methods.

Le Faust de Goethe a bénéficié en France d’un accueil particulièrement riche : traductions, adaptations et commentaires n’ont cessé de se succéder tout au long d’un siècle où les relations politiques et diplomatiques entre les deux pays ont connu d’importantes fluctuations. Dans ce cadre mouvant, on observe que Faust est convoqué de manière récurrente comme représentant typique de l’« esprit allemand ». Le présent article s’attache à suivre les diverses colorations que prend cette réception de Faust comme stéréotype de la germanité, depuis la parution de la pièce de Goethe en 1808 jusqu’au centenaire du Second Faust en 1932. Les étapes principales de ce parcours s’attachent donc à observer sur pièces les mutations du stéréotype au fil du temps. On observe ainsi quelques traits constants, mis en lumière par des oppositions telles que l’« esprit » français et le « Geist » allemand ou, sur un plan qui est d’abord linguistique, la clarté analytique française et le vague synthétique allemand. À partir de ces invariants cependant, le stéréotype se déplace peu à peu : à l’époque de Bismarck, Faust se teinte d’un pragmatisme prussien, avant d’incarner une forme de nietzschéisme volontariste un demi-siècle plus tard. Mais il incarne toujours l’Allemand.

We have cloned an unusual colourless green fluorescent protein (GFP)-like protein from Aequorea coerulescens (acGFPL). The A. coerulescens specimens displayed blue (not green) luminescence, and no fluorescence was detected in these medusae. Escherichia coli expressing wild-type acGFPL showed neither fluorescence nor visible coloration. Random mutagenesis generated green fluorescent mutants of acGFPL, with the strongest emitters found to contain an Glu222→Gly (E222G) substitution, which removed the evolutionarily invariant Glu222. Re-introduction of Glu222 into the most fluorescent random mutant, named aceGFP, converted it into a colourless protein. This colourless aceGFP-G222E protein demonstrated a novel type of UV-induced photoconversion, from an immature non-fluorescent form into a green fluorescent form. Fluorescent aceGFP may be a useful biological tool, as it was able to be expressed in a number of mammalian cell lines. Furthermore, expression of a fusion protein of ‘humanized’ aceGFP and β-actin produced a fluorescent pattern consistent with actin distribution in mammalian cells.

Abstract Camouflage is widespread throughout the animal kingdom allowing individuals to avoid detection and hence save time and energy rather than escape from an approaching predator. Thus, camouflage is likely to have co-evolved with antipredator behavior. Here, we propose that camouflage results in dichotomous escape behavior within and among species with classes of individuals and species with cryptic coloration having shorter flight initiation distances (FIDs; the distance at which an individual takes flight when approached by a human). We report the results of 2 tests of this hypothesis. First, bird species with cryptically colored plumage have consistently shorter FID than closely related species without such color. Within species with sexually dimorphic plumage, brightly colored adult male common pheasants Phasianus colchicus and golden pheasants Chrysolophus pictus have long and variable FID, whereas cryptically colored juveniles and adult females have short and invariable FID. Second, FID in females was predicted by presence or absence of cryptic color, FID in males and their interaction. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that risk-taking behavior has been attuned to camouflage, and that species with different levels of camouflage differ consistently in their FID.

Abstract Aposematic prey advertise their unprofitability with conspicuous warning signals that are often composed of multiple color patterns. Many species show intraspecific variation in these patterns even though selection is expected to favor invariable warning signals that enhance predator learning. However, if predators acquire avoidance to specific signal components, this might relax selection on other aposematic traits and explain variability. Here, we investigated this idea in the aposematic moth Amata nigriceps that has conspicuous black and orange coloration. The size of the orange spots in the wings is highly variable between individuals, whereas the number and width of orange abdominal stripes remains consistent. We produced artificial moths that varied in the proportion of orange in the wings or the presence of abdominal stripes. We presented these to a natural avian predator, the noisy miner (Manorina melanocephala), and recorded how different warning signal components influenced their attack decisions. When moth models had orange stripes on the abdomen, birds did not discriminate between different wing signals. However, when the stripes on the abdomen were removed, birds chose the model with smaller wing spots. In addition, we found that birds were more likely to attack moths with a smaller number of abdominal stripes. Together, our results suggest that bird predators primarily pay attention to the abdominal stripes of A. nigriceps, and this could relax selection on wing coloration. Our study highlights the importance of considering individual warning signal components if we are to understand how predation shapes selection on prey warning coloration.

Abstract Flexible electrochromic technology has gained numerous attentions in flexible smart wearable devices and flexible display. For large-area flexible electrochromic devices (FECD), highly conductive transparent electrodes with advanced stability at a prolonged redox cycling process are indispensable. In this work, an electrochemically stable silver (Ag)/nickel (Ni) mesh/PH 1000 hybrid transparent film has been successfully fabricated by selectively depositing metallic Ni and coating PH 1000 on hybrid-printed Ag mesh. The prepared hybrid transparent film presented high conductivity with the sheet resistance of below 1.5 Ω/sq at over 80% optical transmittance. The Ag/Ni mesh/PH 1000 was successfully utilized as current collectors for all-solid-state flexible electrochromic devices, showing fast coloration switching with the bleaching/coloring time of 0.7 s/0.9 s. In addition, the device demonstrated an exceptional electrochemical cycling stability, which could sustain 89% of its initial optical modulation after 25000 cycles. More importantly, a remarkable mechanical durability was also achieved with a small optical modulation decay of 15% and invariable response time after 1000 rolling cycles. In addition, the uniform coloration has been realized on a 6×6 cm2 FECD, demonstrating its great potential for applications of next-generation up-scaling FECDs.

AbstractBased on 20,000 records representing c. 11,000 individuals from an 8-year capture-mark-recapture (CMR) study, we tested and confirmed a new case of invariant clutch size (ICS) in a sexually dichromatic lacertid lizard, Takydromus viridipunctatus. In the grassland habitat of the early succession stage, females showed strictly low and invariant clutch size, multiple clutches in a breeding season, high reproductive potential, and annual breeding cycles that correspond to the emergence of male courtship coloration. The hatchlings mature quickly, and join the adult cohort for breeding within a few months, whereas adults show low survival rates and a short lifespan, such that most die within one year. Mortality increased in both sexes during the breeding season, especially in females, indicating an unequal cost of reproduction in survival. These life history characters may be explained by two non-exclusive hypotheses of ICS—arboreal hypothesis and predation hypothesis—within the ecological context of their habitat. Our study highlights a confirmed case of ICS, which adapts well to this r-selected grassland habitat that experiences seasonal fluctuation and frequent disturbance.

Structural colorations with all-dielectric metasurfaces provide a dye-free approach for integrated sub-wavelength color generation with enhanced stability and environmental friendliness. However, it remains challenging to simultaneously tailor all the elementary color functions, hue, saturation, and brightness, in a simple platform. Here, we report a generic principle to create bright-field full-color nanoprinting with brightness control by using all-dielectric metasurfaces consisting of arrays of Si elliptical nanopillars. It is demonstrated that the lower order Mie resonances in the reflection spectra redshift with the sizes of the elliptical nanopillars when the incident light polarization is fixed along the major or minor axes. By designing the structure carefully, basic colors, such as red, green, blue, and yellow, are obtained across the visible spectrum. Experimental measurements show that the fabricated colors are independent with respect to the viewing angle owing to the Mie resonance origin. Moreover, we demonstrate that, by varying the angle of either the polarizer or the analyzer, the resonant wavelengths keep invariant while the reflection intensity decreases, leading to the tuning of the brightness of colors from bright to dark without changing the hue and saturation. Our scheme provides a simple yet general approach for the full hue, saturation, brightness control of structural colors, holding great potential in diverse applications, such as anti-counterfeiting technologies, 3D displays, and information storage.

Abstract Intense solar eruptions occasionally trigger extreme geomagnetic storms, expand the boundaries of the auroral oval, and facilitate equatorward extension of auroral visibility. Analyses of such events are important to better understand the extremity of space weather and its impact on the technological infrastructure of modern civilisation. However, unlike other extreme geomagnetic storms, little is known about the auroral activity associated with the extreme geomagnetic storm that occurred on 15/16 July 1959, which was the second largest geomagnetic storm in the space age. In this study, two Chinese accounts and one Russian account of auroral visibility at low (≤ 40°) magnetic latitudes (MLATs) were acquired and analysed. These records allowed us to conservatively reconstruct the equatorward boundaries of the auroral visibility and auroral oval at 27.4° MLAT and 35.4° invariant latitude, respectively. Our analysis chronologically contextualised them, revealing that the main phase occurred slightly before the peak of the extreme geomagnetic storm. Moreover, their coloration indicates the excitation of, at least, nitrogen at 427.8 nm and oxygen at 557.7 nm at these low MLATs. Our results allow us to contextualise this extreme geomagnetic storm based on the equatorward boundary of the auroral oval, thereby facilitating the improvement in existing empirical correlation models.

Un défi majeur dans l'application de l'apprentissage profond à l'histopathologie réside dans la variation des colorations, à la fois inter et intra-coloration. Les modèles d'apprentissage profond entraînés sur une seule coloration (ou domaine) échouent souvent sur d'autres, même pour la même tâche (par exemple, la segmentation des glomérules rénaux). L'annotation de chaque coloration est coûteuse et chronophage, ce qui pousse les chercheurs à explorer des méthodes de transfert de coloration basées sur l'adaptation de domaine. Celles-ci visent à réaliser une segmentation multi-coloration en utilisant des annotations d'une seule coloration, mais sont limitées par l'introduction d'un décalage de domaine, réduisant ainsi les performances. La détection et la quantification de ce décalage sont essentielles. Cette thèse se concentre sur des méthodes non supervisées pour développer une métrique de détection du décalage et propose une approche de transfert de coloration pour le minimiser. Bien que ces algorithmes réduisent le besoin d'annotations, ils peuvent être limités pour certains tissus. Cette thèse propose donc une amélioration via l'auto-supervision
A key challenge in applying deep learning to histopathology is the variation in stainings, both inter and intra-stain. Deep learning models trained on one stain (or domain) often fail on others, even for the same task (e.g., kidney glomeruli segmentation). Labelling each stain is expensive and time-consuming, prompting researchers to explore domain adaptation based stain-transfer methods. These aim to perform multi-stain segmentation using labels from only one stain but are limited by the introduction of domain shift, reducing performance. Detecting and quantifying this domain shift is important. This thesis focuses on unsupervised methods to develop a metric for detecting domain shift and proposes a novel stain-transfer approach to minimise it. While multi-stain algorithms reduce the need for labels in target stains, they may struggle with tissue types lacking source-stain labels. To address this, the thesis focuses to improve multi-stain segmentation with less reliance on labelled data using self-supervision. While this thesis focused on kidney glomeruli segmentation, the proposed methods are designed to be applicable to other histopathology tasks and domains, including medical imaging and computer vision
