In 2005–2006 Harvard Divinity School observed the fiftieth anniversary of the admission of women to the school, and the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Women's Studies in Religion Program. This special issue of the Harvard Theological Review extends the celebration of these two anniversaries by gathering highlights of their intellectual fruit. The year-long celebration began with a convocation at which Harvard President Lawrence Summers joined Divinity School Dean William Graham and the faculty, staff and students in marking the historic anniversary. The convocation address, “A Short Half-Century: Fifty Years of Women at Harvard Divinity School,” is included as the first entry in this issue. Throughout the year, distinguished alumnae delivered prestigious named lectures, and panels recalled particularly salient outcomes of women's presence. The year concluded with a session at which the first women students who entered in 1955 returned to HDS to reflect on their experiences and careers.

Women's history emerged as a branch of social history in the 1970s, parallel to the feminist movement. Scholars of the Arab world, Iran, and Turkey began producing studies in numbers in the 1980s. The trickle of scholarship became a stream in the 1990s, developing greater theoretical complexity with the incorporation of gender as a category of analysis. The taking up of gender coincided with the cultural turn in historical studies, and gender history built on, or encompassed, women's history, as questions about whether “women” was a category at all were raised. The interest in gender was quickly followed by attention to sexuality, masculinity, and related topics.

No commentary on Martial Book 14 has appeared since that of Ludwig Friedlander (1886). Since Friedlӓnder dealt with Martial' s entire corpus, his introductory remarks to Book 14 were necessarily subordinated to his wider concerns. While his commentary is very superficial. This work hopes, therefore, to fill a significant gap. The thesis comprises three main parts. The introduction discusses the Roman Saturnalia, concentrating on its origins, the way it was celebrated, and the licence, lotteries and gifts which characterised these celebrations. Further discussion deals with the book's title and the order of the epigrams it contains. Another section defends Friedlӓnder' s dating of Book 14 against a recent challenge

In this thesis, Incorporating Disability Studies: Revising the Introductory Women's Studies Course, I emphasize scholarship from Disability Studies that draws on feminist scholarship. I analyze introductory women's studies courses, using on-line syllabi only, and demonstrate the lack of Disability Studies work within the introductory courses. When analyzing Disability Studies courses for themes and required texts, I discover a rich field of feminist Disability Studies scholarship. I explore the historical trajectory of the development of the "social model of disability," as well as how it differs from the traditional "medical model." I examine the influence of feminist theory on issues of language, identity, embodiment, and sexuality within Disability Studies scholarship. I reveal the omission of Disability Studies perspectives from feminist scholarship. When revising, I offer scholarship that reflects themes noted as significantly important to Disability Studies scholars. Building a URLography, I provide brief annotations to web addresses that also contribute to incorporating Disability Studies material into the introductory women's studies course.

Garza, Maria Alicia 1957. "El genero y la sexualidad en la cuentistica de Ines Arredondo". Diss., The University of Arizona, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/290641.

The narrative of Ines Arredondo presents a wide range of themes that include insanity, the gaze, loneliness, revisionary representations of biblical and mythological stories and various representations of sexuality. This study considers gender and sexuality as ideological constructs in the following themes: male homosexuality, revisionary writing as a subversive discourse and the grotesque body presented as a subversion of the social order. An analysis of the following stories is provided: "La senal," "Las mariposas nocturnas," "Opus 123," "Estio," "La sunamita," "Lo que no se comprende," "Cancion de cuna," "Sahara," and "Orfandad". Each of these stories presents an unstable zone where there is always a social and/or moral conflict. A combination of theoretical perspectives by Louis Althusser, Lucia Guerra Cunningham, Mary Daly, Bernard McElroy, Alicia Ostriker, Tey Diana Rebolledo, Mary Russo and other critics was utilized to examine the aforementioned themes. Male homosexuality is one representation of sexuality that is apparent in the narrative of Arredondo. Homosexuality is presented as social conflict rather than in an erotic manner. The theme of male homosexuality serves as a criticism of how society demands the binary opposition of gender. Arredondo's stories show how there exists a conflict between what is accepted and rejected. Nevertheless, Arredondo's stories also present a feminine discourse that is subversive. This strategy is evident in her stories that are revised versions of biblical and mythological stories. The purpose of these stories is to subvert masculine texts that have dictated women's behavior and have constructed feminine subjectivities from a patriarchal point of view. Another subversive aspect of Arredondo's writing is through the presentation of the female grotesque. Arredondo gives a voice to characters who have been marginalized because of their appearance by their families. The families represent a microsociety which oppresses both men and women. Arredondo's stories exhibit the struggle between Self and other to portray a framework of societal conflict. The narrative of Ines Arredondo presents gender and sexuality as ideological constructs and through this perspective the complexity of human relationships is easily observed.

Low desire is the most common sexual dysfunction in women. Pharmaceuticals are being developed to treat it, most notably Flibanserin, owned by Sprout Pharmaceuticals. Sometimes inaccurately referred to as "female Viagra," Flibanserin actually treats an entirely different problem. Viagra allows men to get an erection, meaning that it treats physical arousal problems. Flibanserin, and other drugs for low sexual desire in women, act on the brain. Women with low desire don't have a problem with physical arousal or with orgasm, but with desiring sex before it starts. Most women with low sexual desire disorder have partners with higher desire than they do. So is low desire a medical, physiological problem in the brain? Or is it a sociocultural, interpersonal issue? Some experts think that the majority of women with what has been called a "disorder" of low sexual desire have no abnormal physiological problem, but instead are living in a sociocultural and medical system that encourages them to think of themselves as broken, and may be best treated with non-pharmaceutical methods. Other experts think that low desire is a physiological problem and drugs are important to treat it. Cultural shame around communicating about sex, undervaluing of women's sexuality compared to men's, and unrealistic sexual expectations all feed into and complicate the issue.

AbstractRadio plays an empowering role through the content it broadcasts, the manner in which it broadcasts (formats and platforms), and the choice of who is involved in the broadcasting, such as producers, editors, presenters, or guests. If women are portrayed in non-stereotypical ways and are included in the production and output of broadcasts, radio can influence how women perceive topics, how they perceive themselves and, importantly, how society perceives them. This chapter explains how radio plays this role and its various attributes and functions as one of the main and most trusted sources of information in West Africa. It also details perceptions and understandings of empowerment, providing context to environments in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, the three countries on which the book focuses. It introduces the various concepts used in the book, including enabling environments and enabling factors for radio’s contribution to promoting women’s empowerment.

There is no doubt that the world today is more interested than ever in the discourse of human rights that sheds light on the covenants and legal charters that govern this domain. Besides that, women are the pivotal pillar of the society; consequently, they are the primary concern in the human rights discourse of different generations. Subsequently, their personal, cultural, political, financial and social rights are recognized; furthermore, their rights are strengthened by official charters . Despite the fact that no one can deny the positive aspects of the human rights discourse related to the role and the status of women in society by spreading human rights awareness and building a strong relationship between men and women based on human considerations; nevertheless, real life is another world, it is paradoxical, declarations and covenants advocate for women’s rights, at the same time women suffer from violence, disrespect, and discrimination. In the era of rights, cultural openness, technological revolution and economic development, women are threatened more than ever by other ways of violence that directly target the natural instinct and the moral values by spreading abnormalities such as homosexuality and gender reassignment. These acts can also be seen in official discourses and adopted by official organizations and governments profiting from the lack of the moral discourse that should be undertaken by the monotheistic religions especially the Islam. Moreover, the human rights discourse accuses the religious discourse of violating women’s rights and raises a number of suspicions around it. This leads us to question the credibility and the effectiveness of the human rights discourse? And to look for the alternatives that the Islamic discourse can offer in order to remove all the suspicions raised around it. These are questions that I try to answer through this article by elucidating the essence of the Islamic discourse that works for spreading values and also to reply on the suspicions that have been raised about the status of women in the Islam. I decided to follow these steps: Introduction: defining the problem and determining the outlines. First: Instinct is a guide to family values and drawing up the relationship between men and women. Second: Polygamy. Third: Guardianship and Alimony responsibility for the family. Fourth: Guardianship in the Islamic marriage contract. Fifth: Females decrease in religion and mind. Sixth: The male has the equal of the portion of two females. Conclusion.

Abstract. Introduction. The problem of women's health protection in enterprises producing and using nickel and its compounds is particularly relevant, since women make up a significant contingent of workers at some stages of production. Nickel and its compounds are used in the production of high-alloy steels, alloys with copper, chromium, aluminum, as a catalyst in the processes of hydrogenation of fats, in the production of batteries, nickel-plating of metal products. In case of violations of the technological process, labor protection conditions, workers may be exposed to nickel aerosol and its oxides. Purpose. To study the effect of nickel and its insoluble compounds on the reproductive function of white rats. Method of research. The studies were carried out on sexually mature female white rats weighing 180-200 g with a stable estrous cycle lasting 4-6 days. Experimental studies were conducted in accordance with national and international regulatory requirements ensuring humane treatment of animals used in experiments: Directive 2010/63/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of the European Union of September 22, 2010 on the protection of animals used in scientific purposes, Order of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation of 01.04.2016 No. 199n «On approval of the Rules of good laboratory Practice». The industrial conditions for the action of aerosol of insoluble nickel compounds were simulated in a special chamber with an individual intake of aerosol into the breathing zone at a concentration of 0.2 mg / m3 daily for 4 hours during the entire gestation period. The animals were assessed for the dynamics of body weight on the 1st, 8th, 14th and 20th days of pregnancy. On the 20th day of pregnancy, the number of yellow bodies of pregnancy, placentas and fetuses was determined, pre-, post-implantation and total intrauterine death, average length and weight of fetuses, and average placenta weight were calculated. The total number of pregnant females and fetuses was recorded with the subsequent calculation of the number of fetuses per female. Results. The action of an aerosol of insoluble nickel compounds at a concentration of 0.2 mg / m3 in this mode did not lead to a violation of the reproductive function of white rats in all the studied parameters. Conclusion. The experimental data obtained indicate that insoluble nickel compounds at the level of the maximum permissible concentrations for the air of the working area will not pose a risk of developing reproductive health pathology in working women.

The former experience concerns the Web publication of a bibliography on Beneventan manuscripts and arises from the need of overcoming the long edition times of printed information. It also proposes itself as an online resource for all researchers involved in studies on the South Italian book script in the Middle Ages. The latter one originates from most recent studies on women copyists in the Middle Ages and uses an online database to spread news on this subject. The paper then analyzes analogies and differences between the two experiences and suggests, at last, they can be seen as a source of online information for scholars, thus representing a first step towards the construction of new paradigms of knowledge and research in historical studies.

Globally, studies show that women in the labor force are paid less, hold fewer senior positions and participate less in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. A 2019 UNESCO report found that women represent only 29% of science R&D positions globally and are already 25% less likely than men to know how to leverage digital technology for basic uses. As the use and development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to mature, its time to ask: What will tomorrows labor market look like for women? Are we effectively harnessing the power of AI to narrow gender equality gaps, or are we letting these gaps perpetuate, or even worse, widen? This collaboration between UNESCO, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) examines the effects of the use of AI on the working lives of women. By closely following the major stages of the workforce lifecycle from job requirements, to hiring to career progression and upskilling within the workplace - this joint report is a thorough introduction to issues related gender and AI and hopes to foster important conversations about womens equality in the future of work.

The Geo-mapping for Energy and Minerals (GEM) program was funded between 2008 and 2020 with the aim of advancing geological knowledge of the North to reduce risk for mineral exploration and inform land-use decisions and future management of the North. Twenty-one regional activities were undertaken across Canada's northern shield, spanning northern Prairie Provinces, northern Quebec, Labrador, along with much of Nunavut and Northwest Territories. A further five activities were thematic in nature. Bulletin 612 presents results from 12 of these endeavours, including integrated regional bedrock geoscience studies, geophysical surveys, and basin analyses, as well as thematic thermochronology, geochemistry and large igneous province syntheses. The results highlight that GEM has contributed to new era of understanding of the northern Canadian Shield, expanding its framework substantially and developing an increasingly complex model of Archean cratons, Archean/Proterozoic microcontinents, and juvenile Paleoproterozoic crust that highlights the existence of a dozen new pericratonic to exotic ribbon microcontinents within a mosaic once considered as mostly large cratonic masses welded by Paleoproterozoic orogens. This emerging picture brings additional questions for future northern studies - particularly in the granularity of subdivision of the largest blocks, the impact of enigmatic earliest Paleoproterozoic orogens, and dynamics of assembly of exotic and little-known terranes.

Huntington, Dale. Meeting women's health care needs after abortion. Population Council, 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh2000.1036.

Resumo:
Women who seek emergency treatment for abortion complications—bleeding, infection, and injuries to the reproductive tract system—should be a priority group for reproductive health care programs. These women often receive poor-quality services that do not address their multiple health needs. They may be discharged without counseling on postoperative recuperation, family planning (FP), or other reproductive health (RH) issues. Women who have had an induced abortion due to an unwanted pregnancy are likely to have a repeat abortion unless they receive appropriate FP counseling and services. Preventing repeat unsafe abortions is important for RH programs because it saves women's lives, protects women’s health, and reduces the need for costly emergency services for abortion complications. At the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development, the world's governments called for improvements in postabortion medical services. As part of the resulting international postabortion care initiative, the Population Council’s Operations Research and Technical Assistance projects worked collaboratively to conduct research on interventions to improve postabortion care. This brief summarizes the major findings of this research and relevant studies by other international organizations.
