Writing about loneliness has been a struggle in the midst of the pandemic. Characterized by loneliness, isolation, anxiety, and fear, the COVID-19 pandemic is an exceptionally challenging time. At various points while navigating this loneliness project amid a particularly lonely time, we lamented the seeming futility of it all. A main goal of developing a Feminist Loneliness Studies in this introduction is to understand the ways that systems of oppression – white supremacy, settler colonialism, anti-queer bias, misogyny, neoliberal capitalism, and so on – create our lonely world. To date, there remains no comprehensive feminist analysis of the structural conditions that both produce and intensify experiences of loneliness. We aim to remedy this gap. That is, we seek to address what a Feminist Loneliness Studies can contribute to understanding the complexities of this complicated emotion. For example, what is the unique loneliness of the feminist killjoy who calls out, or calls in, existing forms of queerphobia, racism, and sexism? What does it mean to be a politicized person and how does that result in both alienation and isolation? What might the relationship be between white supremacy and loneliness? How is loneliness both individual and systemic, and what is the relationship between the two? What distinctive forms of loneliness are created by ableism, sanism, neoliberalism, capitalism, globalization, and the gig economy? Ought loneliness be avoided at all costs? What are the ethics of loneliness? In our introduction to this special issue, we unpack and theorize the potential perils and generative possibilities offered up by this profound emotion. Establishing a Feminist Loneliness Studies provides us with the space we need to begin addressing and comprehending loneliness.

The processing of texts that will be public is an activity dating from the 3rd century b.C when the texts were produced by scribes in monasteries. Already in the 15th century, typographers, teachers and scholars began to carry out this work, obeying certain rules of standardization, hitherto non-existent. Currently, although the textual treatment stage is important, the presence of professionals to perform, namely, the proofreader and copyediting, is becoming less frequent in newspapers and publishers. It is common confusion in defining what is copyediting and what is proofreading. In copyediting, the professional performs textual complex interventions, which may change the structure of the text. In proofreading, the search for inaccuracies that have remained, as grammatical errors, as well as those related to the standardization of the text. In order to observe the changes suggested by copy writing and understand more comprehensively his acting, we selected as corpus texts belonging to the genre introduction of MSc dissertation, in the original and copyedited version. To achieve this goal, we were based on north-american genre studies, which Miller (2009a, 2009b, 2009c), Swales (1990, 2004), Bhatia (1993) and Bunton (1998, 2002); we take their methodological models to apply in this research, as well as, the studies of Bazerman (2006a, 2006b, 2007), for whom writing is "agency". Through this research it was possible to observe that the studies of genres, in particular those related to the rhetorical moves, can contribute greatly to the understanding and the improvement of copyediting

Book Summary: The study of language and gender has been greatly advanced by focusing on the local and the particular. Now is the time to explore what more we can learn by looking at gendered speakers’ use of typologically different languages. How do the resources provided by each language affect the ways in which women and men construct gendered identities in their cultures and communities? What resources do the languages provide at various linguistic levels? What frameworks account for gender-linked variation in specific local contexts? As we advance our understanding of locally constructed masculinities and femininities, these questions impel the studies brought together in this volume, which investigate Maori, Japanese, Hebrew, Tamil, Chinese, Korean, English, Arabic, Sinhala, and Ekegusii. Written for scholars of linguistics, this collection illustrates the current state of understanding of the interaction of language and social gender, and it suggests directions for future research.

No commentary on Martial Book 14 has appeared since that of Ludwig Friedlander (1886). Since Friedlӓnder dealt with Martial' s entire corpus, his introductory remarks to Book 14 were necessarily subordinated to his wider concerns. While his commentary is very superficial. This work hopes, therefore, to fill a significant gap. The thesis comprises three main parts. The introduction discusses the Roman Saturnalia, concentrating on its origins, the way it was celebrated, and the licence, lotteries and gifts which characterised these celebrations. Further discussion deals with the book's title and the order of the epigrams it contains. Another section defends Friedlӓnder' s dating of Book 14 against a recent challenge

Excerpt: Among the most enduring artifacts (along with certain lined-out hymns that are traceable back to sixteenth-century British churches) from the early days of European settlement in Appalachia, ballads are still in everyday use in some regional households and among certain performers, if largely outside the purview of the popular music industry. Even if reduced in range and frequency of performance from their heyday during the preindustrial and early industrial eras, ballads remain relevant today, as they are gems of compact storytelling that communicate thematically timeless narratives.

The final paper describes augmentative and alternative communication and how it is used to help people with complex communication needs. The first part f the paper is about communication: the biological and social infrastructure of communication are analysed as well as its ontogenetic and phylogenetic development. The second chapter presents alternative and augmentative communication: its principles, assessment, intervention modalities, devices which are usually employed to reach a more effective communication. The third part presents two cases of developmental disabilities: first, autism and specific impairment in language comprehension and second, cerebral palsy. Both cases have a brief introduction about the assessment and evaluation, but the attention is focused on the identification and matching of the two individuals' communication needs.

Furnishing Gender is a collection of furniture and objects of the home that have been deliberately altered to explore and expose pervasive aspects of toxic masculinity. The work within examines aspects of rape culture, queer culture, and hetero-normal constructs that link our realities to the lies of masculinity and gender difference. It is my intent that the viewer become uncomfortable and my hope that they not shy away from this discomfort, but accept the exhibition’s challenge to be vulnerable, genuine, and to engage in conversations that confront the conventions of traditional gender roles and biases.

A number of recent studies have been conducted to determine if gender and/or anatomy significantly contribute to the probability of spinal injury of military pilots during the initial stages of an in-flight ejection. These studies have been prompted by the introduction of females into combat aircrew positions, and the concern that they may be at higher risk of spinal injury than males, especially considering most ejection tests and evaluations were conducted for an all-male pilot population [1]. Although some studies have suggested that no statistically significant difference exists in experimentally measured acceleration response between males and females [2, 3], the anatomical difference between the genders is clearly significant. The female body, on average, has 30% less mass, 25% less vertebral cross-sectional area (CSA), 20% less vertebral breaking strength, 10% less muscle mass and 10% shorter spine than the avearge male [4, 5].

Although being mandatory since 2007, Spanish universities have not fully introduced a gender perspective in their degrees. This becomes even more critical in Science, Technolgy and Maths (STM) fields, where non biased information and objective knowledge is presupposed. Nevertheless, different studies reveal that the absence of role female models may be one of the reasons to lower engagement of women in STM degrees. In this paper, different techniques to approach a gender perspective in the engineering field are described. The introduction of a gender perspective activity in the course Energy Markets from the degree in Energy Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Valencia is presented and analysed. This activity is evaluated alongside the students through a series of semi structured questionnaires. Moreover, the situation and student expectations of the inclusion gender perspective in the whole degree is critically discussed with the valuable inputs of students.

There is no doubt that the world today is more interested than ever in the discourse of human rights that sheds light on the covenants and legal charters that govern this domain. Besides that, women are the pivotal pillar of the society; consequently, they are the primary concern in the human rights discourse of different generations. Subsequently, their personal, cultural, political, financial and social rights are recognized; furthermore, their rights are strengthened by official charters . Despite the fact that no one can deny the positive aspects of the human rights discourse related to the role and the status of women in society by spreading human rights awareness and building a strong relationship between men and women based on human considerations; nevertheless, real life is another world, it is paradoxical, declarations and covenants advocate for women’s rights, at the same time women suffer from violence, disrespect, and discrimination. In the era of rights, cultural openness, technological revolution and economic development, women are threatened more than ever by other ways of violence that directly target the natural instinct and the moral values by spreading abnormalities such as homosexuality and gender reassignment. These acts can also be seen in official discourses and adopted by official organizations and governments profiting from the lack of the moral discourse that should be undertaken by the monotheistic religions especially the Islam. Moreover, the human rights discourse accuses the religious discourse of violating women’s rights and raises a number of suspicions around it. This leads us to question the credibility and the effectiveness of the human rights discourse? And to look for the alternatives that the Islamic discourse can offer in order to remove all the suspicions raised around it. These are questions that I try to answer through this article by elucidating the essence of the Islamic discourse that works for spreading values and also to reply on the suspicions that have been raised about the status of women in the Islam. I decided to follow these steps: Introduction: defining the problem and determining the outlines. First: Instinct is a guide to family values and drawing up the relationship between men and women. Second: Polygamy. Third: Guardianship and Alimony responsibility for the family. Fourth: Guardianship in the Islamic marriage contract. Fifth: Females decrease in religion and mind. Sixth: The male has the equal of the portion of two females. Conclusion.

Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, demyelinating, inflammatory and neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system. Quality of life (QoL) is significantly impaired in patients with MS. Motor disability only partially explains the reduction in QoL, as symptoms such as depression, fatigue and mood disorders also exert influence. Several characteristics in a patient with MS have been associated with worse QoL, including advanced age, late diagnosis and progressive form of the disease. Objective: We evaluated in this review possible impacts of gender on QoL. Methods: The database PubMed was searched for studies indexed from the year 2000 with the following descriptors: multiple sclerosis, quality of life, gender, sex. Results: The impact of the reduction in QoL is worse for men than for women with MS in relation to motor function, vitality, sociability, emotional well-being and mental health. Men seems to have a greater cognitive decline, with worsening performance in verbal memory and executive function. Interestingly, gender and marital status can influence social support. Women had more support networks as they reported better availability from friends than from their male caregivers. It was also noted that men without a spouse feel less social support. Regarding non-motor symptoms, women feel more pain and have a higher prevalence of depressive and/or anxiety disorders. However, regarding sphincter and sexual disorders, the impact on QoL is greater in men. Women with high motor disability seem to maintain psychological well-being better than male patients. Conclusion: Men seeking help later may be a factor influencing the natural history of MS. The diagnosis of a chronic disease for men seems to be faced differently due to cultural factors. The different impact of disabilities between genders makes us understand that the management must be specific for each sex to better meet the needs of patients.

The term data mining itself implies mining, i.e. the process of sorting, organizing or grouping a large amount of data, which enables the extraction of relevant information. More precisely, data mining leads to flexibility in data, discovery of relationships, regularity, legality and other structures where data can be organized into databases or can be textual, unstructured, derived from the Internet or data organized into time series. A significant change was made in the Bologna process with the introduction of doctoral studies, whose primary goal was to realize the link between education and research. As doctoral studies represent an important level of education, this paper is based on determining gender differences as determinants of the number of doctoral students in the Republic of Serbia. After downloading and installing the NCSS software tool, the downloading, transformation and preprocessing of data originating from the open data portal began. The result of this research is the analysis of data through regression methods, where the given regression mining technique with its set of methods made it possible to predict trends in gender differences as determinants of the number of doctors of science in the Republic of Serbia. The conducted research opens many possibilities for further research.

Introduction: Elders are a heterogeneous group with gender and age-based differences. The frailty concept makes the debate about the major factor that leads those patients to emergency relevant. Therefore, the high potential of morbidity and mortality of neurological occurrences established the scenario in which this study has been designed. Objective: Report the number of hospitalizations by neurological diseases to evaluate its prevalence in the context of emergency admissions and establish a connection between etiology-health promotion. Methods: It is a cross-sectional retrospective study settled in Juiz de Fora, which is part of the Consórcio Intermunicipal de Saúde da Região Sudeste (CISDESTE). Care provided by Serviço de Atendimento Móvel de Urgência (SAMU) to elderly above 61 years old for the period between April/2015 to March/2019 were included in Microsoft Excel 2010 spreadsheets. Information such as age, gender, and type of patient’s neurological occurrence was added to the script. Results: In the period of analysis, 28718 occurrences of elders attended by SAMU were notified. From this total, 7778 (27%) were related to neurological occurrences. Analyzing gender, female patients represented the majority of occurrences, despite the incidence of neurological disorders, which was lower than in male patients (23,5% to 25,6% and 28,5% to 34,5% respectively). Conclusion: It was demonstrated that male is a population at risk of disabling and acute neurological events. The importance of individual care to the elderly is noted, and new studies must be done.

Introduction: The diagnosis of arterial hypertension is made with the measurement of blood pressure in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. Currently, changes in the lifestyle of individuals with unhealthy habits have been observed. The consequence of such habits is a growing number of cases of chronic degenerative diseases, and those that stand out are cardiovascular diseases. However, there are few studies on the frequency and consequences of the disorders caused by these diseases. The lifestyle directly influences cardiovascular health, so encouraging young people to eat healthy habits with physical activity practices, food education and non-use of tobacco can prevent the emergence of these diseases. Objective: To characterize hypertensive patients treated at a polyclinic regarding gender, age and time of diagnosis Method: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in a University Polyclinic in the city of São Paulo, located in the south zone. Information was collected on gender, age, Body Mass Index, office blood pressure, knowledge about the disease and individual lifestyle. Results: Participants were 36 patients, of which 76.77% were female and 23.23% were hypertensive in treatment. Age ranged from 39 to 49 years, 60% of them diagnosed between 1 and 5 years, and there was high knowledge about hypertension, changes in eating habits and lifestyle. Conclusion: The prevalence of female patients with arterial hypertension was observed. The sample studied represents a group of the population with good knowledge about the disease, understanding the need to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

My contribution, rooted in functional and systemic grammar, is based on the assumption that though discourse as a social behaviour and verbal interaction has been studied by great minds for decades, the dynamism of human evolution and the consequent changes in communicative strategies can hardly leave discourse analysts immune to a whole spectrum of new challenges. These are evoked by changes in the scope of items considered to be relevant for present-day research, by blurring the traditional borderlines between categories (written manifestation of spoken discourse in chatting), but before all by the existence of language corpora offering the immensity of data across genres, language varieties and language interfaces. A brief introduction (Part 1) will be followed by three main parts, focusing on reasons for multifacetedness in discourse (Part 2), whimsical nature of discourse (Part 3), and hands-on experience with overt language manifestations of vagueness, as exemplified by English placeholders (Mrs Thingy, John Whatsisname, whatchamacallit, so-and-so) emergent from the BNC and COCA corpora (Part 4). The aim is twofold: to map the facets which contribute to patterning and variation in discourse shaping, and by using authentic language data amplify the role of peripheral language devices in interaction.

Introduction: The specialty of neurosurgery over time has become increasingly sought after. Even with the gradual increase in women specialists in neurosurgery, they are still represented by a very small number in comparison to the number of male neurosurgeons. Objectives: Present the gender gap within neurosurgery. Methods: This is a systematic literature review, with the search terms: “gender” AND “women” AND “Neurology” AND “Neurosurgery”, resulting in 645 articles on the Pubmed, Lilacs, Scielo, Cochrane and TripDataBase search platforms. The inclusion criteria were: original studies published in any language. Published articles that prevented full access, as well as systematic reviews or not, were excluded. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 6 articles were included. Results: The databases of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS) revealed that women represent only 12.0% of residents in neurosurgery. Most of them left training in the first 3 years and remained in Medicine, looking for other specialties. In addition, the female conflict rate with the team was 17.0% compared to a 5.3% male rate. The low number of women in neurosurgical residency programs can result in a consequent decrease in female tutors, lack of rise in female professionals and non-adherence of medical students in residency programs. Conclusions: The percentage of women in medicine has increased in recent years, however the number of women who pursue a neurosurgical career is still very small, when compared to the total number of neurosurgeon men.

This paper explores the relevance of international debates to the realities of the Middle East, an important but understudied region that has often been subject to stereotyping. The region’s wealth of traditions and diverse contemporary experience offer insights to those who venture beyond the surface appearance. This paper provides a broad introduction to the connections between family, gender, and population policy in the Middle East. It is based on studies by a diverse group of Middle East scholars and the discussions they generated in Cairo at an international symposium sponsored by the Population Council in February 1994. The paper was written prior to the historic UN International Conference on Population and Development in Egypt, in the hope both of increasing understanding of an important region of the world and refining our grasp of international issues.

Globally, studies show that women in the labor force are paid less, hold fewer senior positions and participate less in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. A 2019 UNESCO report found that women represent only 29% of science R&D positions globally and are already 25% less likely than men to know how to leverage digital technology for basic uses. As the use and development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to mature, its time to ask: What will tomorrows labor market look like for women? Are we effectively harnessing the power of AI to narrow gender equality gaps, or are we letting these gaps perpetuate, or even worse, widen? This collaboration between UNESCO, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) examines the effects of the use of AI on the working lives of women. By closely following the major stages of the workforce lifecycle from job requirements, to hiring to career progression and upskilling within the workplace - this joint report is a thorough introduction to issues related gender and AI and hopes to foster important conversations about womens equality in the future of work.

The fruit surface (exocarp) is a unique tissue with multiple roles influencing fruit growth and development, disease susceptibility, crop yield, post-harvest treatments, shipping and storage quality, and food safety. Furthermore, highly visible exocarp traits are the consumer's first exposure to the fruit, serving to identify fruit type, variety, attractiveness, and market value. Cucurbit fruit, including the closely related Cucumis species, melon (C. melo) and cucumber (C. sativus), exhibit tremendous diversity for fruit surface properties that are not present in model species. In this project, we identified genetic factors influencing Cucumis fruit surface morphology with respect to important quality determinants such as exocarp and flesh color, cuticle deposition, and surface netting. We employed a combination of approaches including: genome-wide association studies (GWAS) utilizing an extensive melon population and the U.S. Plant Introduction (PI) collection for cucumber to identify genomic regions associated with natural variation in fruit surface traits; bulked segregant RNA-seq (BSR-seq) analysis of bi-parental F2:3 or RIL (recombinant inbred line) populations to genomic regions and candidate genes segregating for fruit surface traits; and comparison of syntenic genomic regions and identification of homologous candidate genes. Candidate genes were examined for sequence and/or expression differences during fruit development that correspond with phenotypic differences. Primary outcomes of the work included identification of candidate genes influencing cuticle deposition, epidermal cell structure, surface netting, and intensity of rind and flesh color. Parallel studies identified mutations within the cucumber and melon homologs of the transcription factor WIN1 (WAX INDUCER1) as a significant factor influencing these surface properties. Additional QTL (quantitative trait loci) were identified in both species, and candidate genes in melon include a novel beta-glucosidase involved in lignin production and an integral membrane protein potentially involved in cuticle metabolism. Genetic resources and biochemical approaches have been developed to study cuticle and wax deposition in both species: segregating populations of melon were developed and sequenced for bulked segregant analysis and samples collected for metabolic analysis; an isolation procedure was developed for lipid droplets from cucumber peel and metabolomic analyses have been initiated. Genetic studies in melon identified mutations in a candidate gene (APRR2), associated with light immature rind, and further indicated that this gene is also associated with color intensity of both mature rinds and flesh, making it a good target for breeding. GWAS studies utilizing the cucumber core diversity population are being performed to identify additional sources of variation for fruit surface properties, map QTL, and examine for synteny with melon. Collectively these studies identified genetic regions associated with important quality traits and contributed to our understanding of underlying biological processes associated with fruit surface development. Knowledge of genetic control of these characteristics can facilitate more efficient breeding for important fruit surface traits.

Resumo:
The social economic impacts of the Covid-19 crisis in informal urban settlements are widely discussed in the literature, as are the risk factors for particular social and economic groups in these areas. However, government responses and evidence of their impact do not appear to rise to the challenges posed by these studies. Pre-pandemic analyses of risk factors in informal urban settlements and newly collected evidence from different contexts are available to understand the unique and pressing challenges that the pandemic poses to wellbeing in informal urban settlements. In contrast, there is little evidence of effective policy and programme solutions to address these challenges, which is likely driven by the absence of targeted policies and programmes to support people living in informal urban settlements. As a result, many communities have had to rely on their own limited resources and support networks to respond to the crisis (Wilkinson, 2021). This report briefly summarises the range of available evidence on the social economic impacts of the Covid-19 crisis in informal urban settlements and the intersectional differences in how different identity groups living in them have experienced the pandemic. Following a short introduction to the context of the Covid-19 crisis in these areas, the report outlines three thematic areas that have received significant attention in the literature and policy discourses – livelihoods and poverty, food security, and education. While not an exhaustive list, this range of topics is indicative of the range of evidence available and outstanding gaps. The remaining section details evidence of how different identity groups living in informal urban settlements have experienced the pandemic based on gender, disability, age, and migration status. The review draws on a mixture of academic and grey literature, with some opinion pieces and blogs also included given the ongoing nature of the pandemic.

Altering milk composition via transgenesis depends on three main factors. (1) The availability of an efficient regulatory sequences for targeting transgene(s) to the mammary gland; (2) a reliable in vitro model to test the expression of transgenes prior to their introduction to the animal genome; and (3) better understanding of the major factors which determine the rate of gene expression and protein synthesis. The current studies provide the necessary means and knowledge to alter milk protein composition via transgenesis. The following specific goals were achieved: a: Identifying regulatory regions in the b-lactoglobulin (BLG) gene and the cross-talk between elements which enabled us to construct an efficient vector for the expression of desirable cDNA's in the mammary gland. b: The establishment of a sheep mammary cell line that serves as a model for the analysis of endogenous and exogenous milk protein synthesis in the mammary gland of livestock. c: An accurate comparison of the potency of the 5' regulatory sequences from the BLG and whey acidic protein (WAP) promoters in directing the expression of human serum albumin (HSA) to the mammary gland in vitro and in vivo. In this study we have also shown that sequences within the coding region may determine a specific pattern of expression for the transgene, distinct from that of the native milk protein genes. d: Characterizing the dominant role of ECM in transgene expression in mammary epithelial cells. e: Further characterization of the BCE-1 enhancer element in the promoter of the b-casein gene as a binding site for the c/EBP-b and Stat5. Identifying its interaction with chromatin and its up regulation by inhibitors of histone deacetylation. f: Identifying a mechanism of translational control as a mediator for the synergistic effect of insulin and prolactin on protein synthesis in the mammary gland.
