In combination with sluggish economic development, the financial crisis and the debt crisis that it triggered have contributed to the fact that tax evasion, tax fraud and tax avoidance are recognized as a serious problem. Tax evasion and tax fraud by well-known personalities from politics, sport, the arts and commerce also attract intensive coverage in the media. In the companies sector, internationalization makes it easier for global corporations to shift their profits to low-tax countries and thus to minimize their tax bill. This paper shall discuss also, the measures to combat international tax evasion to be worked out by the OECD and the G20. The fact that multinational corporations are able to reduce their tax burden on profits through tax-saving plans has been known for decades. There are several reasons for the massive increase in this phenomenon in recent years. On the one hand there has been increasing globalisation, on the other corporate structures have also changed massively in recent decades. Tax havens play an important role in this context and there is practically no global player without branches in tax havens

The state's role in building Japan's telecommunications industry is illustrated by the history of the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Company (NTT) in the post–World War II period. Several factors explain the state's success in developing one of the world's most reliable and technologically advanced industries: a strong desire for technological self-sufficiency; a favorable international environment; an ability to legally reverse-engineer foreign products; and the existence of a business sector that was willing and able to invest heavily in the human resources and facilities necessary to become global players. Japan also benefited from a consensus among its state and business elite on how to use NTT for the purpose of national development.

The record of long–term innovation at the American Telegraph and Telephone Company seems to defy conventional economic and social theories of the firm. The following essay, based on extensive research in the AT&T Archives, argues that CEO Theodore Vail made this possible by transforming the Bell System's orientation to innovation, its structure, and its culture. He also gave the System a cadre of leaders who sustained over the long term Vail's strategy of blending adaptive and formative innovations to promote network efficiency.

The literature on multinational corporations argues that a foreign firm can legitimize its activities, improve its reputation in a host country, and reduce the risk of hostile actions by the host government (including expropriation) by approaching and incorporating influential members of the domestic elite in its business. By using the concept of obsolescing political legitimacy, we argue that this legitimating strategy can lead to a loss of reputation and eventual illegitimacy when the host country undergoes significant social and institutional changes. When these changes take place, the domestic society can perceive that the multinational benefited from a previous social and institutional order increasingly considered as illegitimate. Under these circumstances, the new order will question the legitimacy of the multinational's operations, increasing the risk of expropriation. We illustrate our hypothesis with the case of the political strategies of the International Telephone and Telegraph Company (ITT) in Chile in the twentieth century.

Abstract. On 29 October 1923, radio broadcasting or “Rundfunk” was officially opened in the Voxhaus in Berlin and thus the new communication medium was now also available in Germany, but later than in other countries such as the US and the UK. However, first experiments with wireless telephony, which is the technical basis of this medium, were carried out more than ten years earlier (Pungs, 1922; Mathis, 2019; Titze and Mathis, 2020; Mathis and Titze, 2021). One of the pioneers of this technology was the German Egbert von Lepel, who developed in 1907 a new concept of wireless transmitters that was also suitable for use in wireless telephony. The concept later became known as the quenched spark-gap transmitter (“Löschfunkensender”) or ”Singing Spark” transmitter where a specific variant was developed by the Gesellschaft für Drahtlose Telegraphie (GDT: “Wireless Telegraph Society”), System Telefunken. This article discusses the history of this type of transmitter using new historical sources from national and international archives. It turns out that contrary to what is known on this subject from almost all publications on the history of early wireless technology, the German Imperial Patent Office decided in January 1911 that Lepel's patent was granted as the most fundamental for quenched spark-gap transmitters. With the disclosure of this important historical source, the question of the origin of the invention of the quenched spark-gap transmitter must be reassessed.

This article explores the private trade networks of English East India Company merchants on the west coast of India during the first half of the eighteenth century. Existing studies of English private trade in the Indian Ocean have almost exclusively focused on India's eastern seaboard, the Coromandel Coast and the Bay of Bengal regions. This article argues that looking at private trade from the perspective of the western Indian Ocean provides a different picture of this important branch of European trade. It uses EIC records and merchants' private papers to argue against recent metropolitan-centred approaches to English private trade, instead emphasising the importance of more localised political and economic contexts, within the Indian Ocean world, for shaping the conduct and success of this commerce.

During the twentieth century, Cable & Wireless was the world’s biggest and most important telegraphy company, employing large numbers of people in stations across the world. Its network of submarine cables and wireless routes circumnavigated the globe, connecting Britain with the Empire. This thesis examines the ways in which the British Empire and modernity shaped Cable & Wireless’ corporate identity in order to understand the historical geography of the relationships between Empire, state, and modernity. Additionally, it investigates the role of design in the Company’s engagement with the discourses of modernity and imperialism. Historical Geography has not paid sufficient attention to the role of companies, in particular technology companies, as institutions of imperialism and instruments of modernity. The study of businesses within Historical Geography is in its infancy, and this thesis will provide a major contribution to this developing field. This thesis takes an interdisciplinary approach that sits at the intersection of three main disciplines: Historical Geography, Design History and Business History. This thesis examines how Cable & Wireless’ identity was produced, transmitted and consumed. This thesis is based on detailed research in Cable &Wireless’ corporate archive at Porthcurno, examining a wide range of visual and textual sources. This pays particular attention to how the Company designed its corporate identity through maps, posters, ephemera, corporate magazines and exhibitions. Drawing upon the conceptualizations of the Empire as a network, it argues that Cable & Wireless’ identity was networked like its submarine cables with decision-making power, money and identity traversing this network. This thesis seeks to place both the company and the concept of corporate identity within a broader historical and artistic context, tracing the development of both the company’s institutional narrative and the corporate uses of visual technologies. No study has been conducted into the corporate identity and visual culture of Cable & Wireless. This thesis not only provides a new dimension to knowledge and understanding of the historical operations of Cable & Wireless, but also makes a substantive contribution to the wider fields of Historical Geography, Business History, Design History and the study of visual culture.

Abstract The Norwegian state telegraph company was established in 1855, four years after the first telegraph line was installed. The telephone was introduced in 1880 by the International Bell Telephone Company. Within a year, Bell established local franchises in Oslo and Drammen. A second private system was launched in the capital to compete with the Bell System, but the two were combined in 1886 into the Christiana Telephone Company when the vigorous competition between them yielded what municipal officials deemed were counterproductive results. The city government thus committed itself to a role in the development of Oslo’s communications system and retained a share in the new company (Holcombe, 1911).

This chapter discusses the important developments in shipping communication that took place decades before the establishment of the electric telegraph. It emphasises that the improvement of communications was a major factor in the growth process of ocean shipping productivity and draws materials from Lloyd’s List; the British Post Office; the East India Company; and Peter Malm’s shipping correspondence in order to provide testimonies and transmission speeds to show the development of communication. The chapter also considers the role of the steamship in the transformation of overseas communication from the end of the 1830s whilst looking at the emergence of new technology in the expanding shipping market.

Abstract Austria’s telecommunication system is a classic postal-industrial complex: a powerful PTT monopoly closely allied with labor unions and with a virtual cartel of private equipment firms known as the “Four Sisters.” Because large users are frequently state-owned firms or international organizations, little counterpressure exists. Telecommunications began in Austria in 1846, when a railroad company constructed a telegraph line from Vienna to a suburb and onward to the city of Briinn (Brno) for its evolving operational needs (Holcombe, 1911). Emperor Ferdinand quickly declared telegraphy a governmental monopoly, the Telegraphenregal, assigning the new technology solely for the service of the ratlroads and the state. His successor, Emperor Franz Joseph, cast the future of the telecommunications monopoly by his 1849 decree, which, among other things, permitted public access to the telegraph system.

Abstract One of the first applications of the wartime and postwar informational studies of noise was the spread-spectrum technology that scrambled transmitted signals in a communication system for encryptive or antijamming purposes. These scrambled signals effectively “rode on” a noisy carrier. But how to generate a sufficiently noisy carrier and how to synchronize the transmitter and receiver in noise modulation became central problems. In chapter 13, we examine Mortimer Rogoff’s invention of a “noise wheel” at the International Telephone and Telegraph (ITT) Company and MIT Lincoln Laboratories researchers’ development of electronic correlators for their NOMAC spread-spectrum system. In these Cold War military technological projects, noise was transformed from an environmental plight into something useful, as it was turned into a source of diversity.

This chapter delves into the environmental assault on Akwesasne as well as the tribe’s resistance. In the 1950s, Canada and the United States started building the St. Lawrence Seaway, a system of canals, locks, and channels that enabled ships to launch in the Great Lakes and sail clear to the Atlantic Ocean. One of its many regional side projects entailed a massive hydroelectric dam that straddled the international borderline. Its construction drowned out six villages and virtually all of the area’s beaver hutches, displacing some 6,500 people—many of whom were Mohawk—and decimating the trapping industry. The dam also lured businesses into the area, including General Motors, Reynolds Metals, and the Aluminum Company of America, all three of which opened factories on the outskirts of Akwesasne and slowly began to poison the area’s air and rivers. The Environmental Protection Agency has done little to help, and many Mohawks resent them for it. The author interviews activists who have taken matters into their own hands with direct action against the corporations—and have been sued as a result.

There has been a need for communication since the existence of mankind. The man has tried to solve this problem in various ways, such as, by using cave paintings, smoke, fire, or trained pigeons. The printing press was the main tool for communication for some years and then the telegraphs were the first tools of wired communication. The telegraph was introduced in 1838 and the telephone in 1876. Image sending was used for the first time in 1926. In the 1970s, wireless communications became eminent. Today, mobile telephone and satellite communications become the usual means of communication for daily life. For satellite communications, Türkiye initially chose to rent satellite channels from foreign satellite companies. But this was neither strategical nor economical, so Turkish authorities decided to establish Türkiye’s own National Satellite Systems. In order to achieve this goal, Türkiye has started satellite studies since the 1990s. The first Turkish own satellite TÜRKSAT-1A crashed into the ocean due to a malfunction on the third floor of the rocket. On 11 August 1994, TÜRKSAT-1B communication satellite was launched into space. TÜRKSAT-1B, TÜRKSAT-1C, TÜRKSAT-2A, TÜRKSAT-3A, TÜRKSAT-4A, TÜRKSAT-4B, TÜRKSAT-5A, TÜRKSAT-5B were successfully launched and for the time being TÜRKSAT-3A, TÜRKSAT-4A, TÜRKSAT-4B, TÜRKSAT-5A and TÜRKSAT-5B have been continuing their duties. TÜRKSAT-6A, which was produced with domestic resources, is planned to be launched in 2023. It is planned to complete the test activities of the TÜRKSAT-6A satellite in the 2nd quarter of 2023 and to make it ready for transportation and to launch it in the 3rd quarter. It is aimed to use the experience, infrastructure and flight equipment gained within the scope of TÜRKSAT-6A in our future satellite programs, thereby reducing foreign dependency in the satellite sector. BİLSAT and RASAT, are low orbit satellites developed by TÜBİTAK UZAY. GÖKTÜRK-1 and GÖKTÜRK-2, which are also low orbit satellites, can carry high resolution Electro-Optic (E/O) cameras. Within the scope of the GÖKTÜRK-1 Project, the Satellite Assembly, Integration and Test Center (USET) was established. This center was a critical infrastructure for the domestic production of communication satellites. The above-mentioned developments inevitably inspired institutions-organizations and young engineers in Türkiye and increased momentum for satellite development activities in LEO orbit. The TÜRKSAT Model Satellite Competition also pioneered the national mobilization in this field. Afterwards, this competition was included in TEKNOFEST. TÜRKSAT organizes the 7th Model Satellite Competition. TÜRKSAT aims to train human resources in the field of satellite and space technologies. While fulfilling these objectives, TÜRKSAT will increase the quality of human resources and provide a certification service in the field of satellite and space science. This will be beneficial for our friendly countries. Digitally produced training materials will be presented to the relevant international units so that a sustainable system will be established. This system will minimize the negative human factor and will provide universally accepted certificates to be produced. This system will be able to be used by the universities and students may have certificates during their education.

The methodology for Reliability-Based Design and Assessment (RBDA) of an ageing fixed steel offshore structure was established to support detailed re-assessment applied to the management of the structure’s safety, integrity analysis and reliability by evaluating the loading acting on the structure. It is a tool for the high-end analysis of the structure for risk-based design assessment and has been succesfully implemented in the North Sea under Shell operating company. The main purposes of RBDA are to manage a structure’s risk level over its remaining service life and to initiate the cost-efficient inspection or mitigation actions (if required). This method consists of Type I and II uncertainties used to determine the probability of failure for the structure over its remaining service life. However, limited work has been done so far on its application at many different regions, particularly in the South East Asia. Therefore, this paper investigates the robustness of the RBDA methodology applied to fixed offshore structures at shallow waters of Malaysia by considering the native environmental criteria, local authorities’ obligation and company requirements. It is shown that this procedure can efficiently assist in understanding the structure’s failure mechanism and correctly define the relevant type of mitigations required.

The flange inspection associated with piping on offshore production facilities is a time-consuming activity as the flanges should physically be opened in order to perform close visual inspections. In order to sustain maintenance integrity, a number of inspections are allocated for a subsystem based on factors such as: condition of the medium flowing in the line, risk perception of the pipeline system, and the date of installation. Inspection teams recommend inspections based on the data, experience, and exposure to offshore production facilities, as well as the intuition and intentions of those individuals involved with inspection planning and with carrying out implementation during the preventive maintenance shutdowns. However, there is a tendency for the operating company representatives to raise queries with the contractor company representatives about the number of flanges to be opened during the preventive maintenance shutdown as flange inspection consumes a considerable portion of time and resources. Hence, it is vital to interpret sensibly the importance of recommending close visual inspections for flanges if the maintenance integrity is to be sustained. This study focuses on analyzing the historical data limited to flanges on flowlines over the last fifteen years. The final results provide a snapshot of the present status of the flanges of the production facility.

Abstract In Japan, the fundamental disaster management plan was modified after a heavy rainfall event in 2015. According to the updated plan, the transfer of flood disaster risk to non-life insurance is promoted by the Japanese government. Thus, the importance of flood risk modeling for the insurance industry has increased. Winds are expected to become even stronger, resulting in higher storm surges, when the central pressure of the typhoon is intensified. Furthermore, it is possible for an insurance system to experience peak risk when such damage occurs simultaneously. Hence, refining the assessment method of storm surge risk is very important. An insurance company to which storm surge risk is transferred needs to assess not only the infrequent risks, for managing the risk of the company, but also the expected value of the estimated loss, for evaluating the insurance premium. However, only a few studies have assessed storm surges by stochastic approaches. In this study, storm surge losses along the coast of Tokyo Bay are predicted using the output of a stochastic typhoon model for 10,000 years. Storm surge losses due to 600 typhoons potentially causing storm surge damage for 10,000 years are calculated. Exceedance probability curves (EP curves) of estimated storm surge loss for each asset are created. Expected loss and the loss of representative return periods are evaluated based on these EP curves. We successfully determined the expected loss with a small calculation load.

In the paper, the authors point out the illegally carried out transformation, privatization, and confiscation of contractual private ownership over “Hrvatski Telekom” (HT). Namely, until the 1990s, citizens financed the construction, through the PTT, TT network, node, local, long-distance, and main telephone exchanges. Proof of this are the Agreements on pooling funds for the construction, expansion, or reconstruction of telecommunications facilities with the company PTT (Post-Telegraph-Telephone), then HPT (Croatian Post and Telecommunications), and today HT (Hrvatski Telekom). Based on the contractual purchase and sale relationship, the citizens became the owners of ideal shares in the ownership of HT. The enactment of the Act on the Separation of Croatian Post and Telecommunications into Croatian Post and Croatian Telecommunications stipulates that the privatization of these companies will be carried out according to a special law. However, in the privatization process, citizens were deprived of their property, contrary to the Constitution and international documents.

Global attempts to increase generation of clean and reproducible energy have contributed to considerable progress in ocean-wave power-generation technologies. The efficiency of ocean-wave energy converters has improved by almost an order of magnitude in the last decade. In this report, we consider a floating-type gyroscopic ocean-wave power-generator that has proven to generate 50 kW in a prototype test conducted by a Japanese company in 2012. A gyroscopic power generator consists of a buoy, a gimbal, and spinning rotors mounted on a gimbal. The gimbal is installed on the deck of the buoy and rotates when the buoy oscillates or rocks by ocean waves. The gimbal axis is connected to an electric generator. The objectives of our research are to understand quantitatively the mechanisms of gyroscopic ocean-wave power-generators and to improve the component design of the generator to maximize power output. To this end, we develop a mathematical model and a scale model of a gyroscopic ocean-wave power-generator. This integrated approach is to numerically simulate power generation and to clarify the effect of relevant design parameters.

Lifting activity has been usually employed to deploy subsea equipment, especially for huge structures. In one target field of China South Sea, there was one 3D “M” shaped, long and massive jumper being lowered to 200 meter water depth. The jumper was nearly 90 meters long, 22 inches in diameter, deployed by using a spreader frame. The total weight of jumper and frame has been up to nearly 400 Te in air. The whole lifting system mainly includes spreader frame, jumper, two connectors, wire rope and serial slings, etc. Two connectors were welded on both ends of the jumper, and jumper was lifted under spreader by several slings. The deployment operation was proposed by deepwater pipelay crane vessel Hai Yang Shi You (HYSY) 201. To ensure a successful installation, COTEC Offshore Solutions, together with its mother company, China Offshore Oil Engineering Company, have developed an advanced analysis by considering practical offshore field procedure and accurate modeling technology. In this paper, firstly, wet lift capacity of wire rope and natural period of the hosting system have been obtained for certain circumstances including axial resonance caused by hostile environment. In addition, lowering though the splash zone operation procedure was simulated by OrcaFlex 9.8a. Allowable Max crane tip tension force, Dynamic Amplification Factor (DAF), Min wire rope force, Max Cranemaster® stroke motion and heave velocity at jumper were obtained during the numerical analysis. Also, allowable values of these key factors are further studied. According to the above analysis, COTEC provides a series of environmental parameters such as the optimum wave direction and period for the offshore lifting operation.

Developments of oil and gas reservoirs in South China Sea are presently accelerated, to cope with the significant increase in energy demand from the mainland. Pipe-in-Pipe (PIP) flowline systems have been widely employed in this region and are continuously being considered for further developments. This is due to its significant thermal insulation capacity to deal with the High Pressure and High Temperature (HPHT) issue. However, the methods in industry for design of PIP systems usually have two side extremes. Simplified analytical approach may lack of accuracy and detailed FE analysis always brings considerably sophisticated modelling and post-processing tasks. To overcome this situation, COTEC Offshore Solutions, together with its mother company, China Offshore Oil Engineering Company, have developed a cost-effective, beam elements based, 3D simulation model using ABAQUS, a general purpose finite element analysis (FEA) package. The mode allows complicated structures of PIP system to be represented in an effective way and adopts a representation of stinger for S-lay installation analysis. A full-history time-dominate analysis from installation to operation is performed in one model, rather than the commonly used ‘snapshot’ analysis. In this study, a simplified modeling guidance of PIP components have been suggested. On the basis of the guidance, a novel 3D beam-elements based model has been produced to accurately represent complex PIP structural behaviors, but with minimum increase in modeling complexity. The analysis is carried out on the time-domain basis, which permits the full strain and stress history of the installation and operation to be observed and the most onerous time-point during the full installation and operation to be captured.

Abstract In 2018 Equinor made an unprecedented step for an energy company and made a multi-terabyte dataset from Volve field open. However, there is a long way from downloading data to executing meaningful analysis. With no way of quickly evaluating the data due to its size and unfamiliar file formats the use of Volve data was so far limited. This paper presents our exploratory work related to the realtime drilling part of the dataset. We provide description of common obstacles and approaches for overcoming them. We also describe specific contents of the dataset for others to gauge the potential for case studies. We hope that this will lower the bar for Volve field data accessibility, promote research, and become a catalyst for other data science projects.

Structural integrity assessments are important for the protection of the environment, offshore crew and company status. Marine structures, through the lifetime, must be maintained by a reliable management system of inspections, repairs and coatings protections. Planned thickness measurements are necessary to update the structure conditions and certify the operation in the marine environment. By these inspections is possible to calculate corrosion rates using statistical regression methods and time dependent corrosion curves. Corrosion rates analysis may well alert structure integrity problems and predict future corrosion tendencies. This study shows the application of field information by using a time dependent corrosion model. This method can be found on asset structure integrity management system [1], which is dominant in the offshore Brazilian industry.

Developments of oil and gas reservoirs in Bohai Sea, South China Sea etc., are presently accelerated, to cope with the significant increase in energy demand from the mainland, China. In recent developments in Bohai Sea, fluid temperature and pressure have been found dramatically being increased up to 100 °C and 20 MPa respectively. The fact that High Temperature and High Pressure (HTHP) in Bohai area brings design challenges, especially to jacket risers and spool pieces. Pipe-in-Pipe (PIP) flowline systems have been widely employed in this region and are continuously being considered for further developments. This is due to its significant thermal insulation capacity to deal with the High Temperature and High Pressure (HTHP) issue. To cope with the challenges induced by HPHT and structural complexity of PIP, COTEC Offshore Engineering Solutions, together with its mother company, China Offshore Oil Engineering Company, have developed a approach by using ABAQUS and AutoPIPE. This paper describes the relevant experience obtained during one development in Bohai Sea, BZ34-2/4 project containing dozens of risers and spool pieces. Two main parts are presented. Firstly, a beam-element based expansion calculation model adopting ABAQUS has been developed to achieve accurate HPHT induced expansions. The structural behavior of PIP can be represented in the developed model, meanwhile with minimum increase in modeling complexity. Secondly, practical and extensive parametric studies have been carried on the riser and spool flexibility against HPHT induced expansions. Since Bohai Sea has been developed extensively, many risers are post-installed and the existing of restriction areas practically enlarges the difficulties of anchor clamp and spool arrangements. Key parameters of these arrangements, such as Z/L shape, the length between two bends, the combinations of bend angles, the length of protection pipe on the riser etc. have been comprehensively investigated. “Gold” rules for rigid riser accessories arrangements and spool piece layout have been suggested accordingly.
