The paper studies the coopetition of the downstream different carriers by providing complementary transport services in intermodal freight transport chain. Considering different information structure, a two-stage dynamic game model with simultaneous actions on investment and price is first formulated. Equilibria show both parties have motivation to select coopetition even if the agreement for cooperation investment is reached in advance. When both firms agree on the specific allocation, the new coopetition with higher efficiency would be emerged. Moreover, we analyze the complexity and evolution of coopetition by repeated pricing game with finitely and infinitely time horizon. In the finitely repeated pricing game, both firms have incentive to reach a tacit understanding to alternate choosing price cooperation and competition after setting suitable allocation scheme; the repeated periodstare then going to be an issue. In the infinitely repeated pricing game, the perfect cooperation is realized by designing the suitable trigger strategy.

Intermodal terminals and warehouses operate in different countries and deliver specific services to their customers. For many clients, it is important to receive a full set of the logistics services delivered by a single operator. However, individual intermodal terminals and warehouses may face challenges with providing these services, e.g., just-in-time goods delivery, goods distribution, cargo handling in non-standard situations, and others. In such cases, the cooperation between logistics companies may be required to organize the comprehensive service of cargo within supply chains. One of the possible solutions is to integrate transport and logistics services providers, establishing their cooperation within one virtual logistics center. The aim of this article is to justify theoretically the possibility of creating such a center by combining services performed by the intermodal terminals and warehouses already in operation under a single entity, in order to minimize the cost of logistics services and the time of goods delivery, as well as to create a comprehensive range of logistics services needed by customers. The relevance of the article and the novelty of the idea are associated with justification of the possibility of combining the activities of intermodal terminals and warehouses located separately in the region in order to improve the logistical service of customers. The theoretical basis for creating a virtual logistics center is based on graph theory methods. The article presents a theoretical model, based on a system of edges and vertices of the graph tree, which corresponds to the activities performed by separately located intermodal terminals and individual warehouses. The discussion is focused on the current problems of creating virtual logistics centers. The research results may be interesting for the managers of intermodal terminals, warehouses, and logistics centers, as well as other decision-makers involved in supply chains implementation and development.

Present performance of railway transport sector is determined by two groups of factors. The first one relates to the changes of external economic environment of railway performance, while the second one deals with the internal changes in the railway transport sector. These factors determine priority directions of railway transport sector development. A good example of such development is implementation of intermodal services, which in turn foresee concept of integration of various logistics service providers. In this paper assumption is made, that implementation of intermodal services as well as integration of various logistics services providers can not be reached without proper nodes on the multimodal transport networks. Therefore definition, urge and some key functions of intermodal terminal are discussed. Later theoretical model of such terminal performance is presented. The paper ends with conclusions about the meaning of intermodal terminal to the increase of quality level of railway transport sector performance.

Compared with traditional freight transportation, intermodal freight transportation is more competitive which can combine the advantages of different transportation modes. As a consequence, operational research on intermodal freight transportation has received more attention and developed rapidly, but it is still a young research field. In this paper, a stochastic intermodal service network design problem is introduced in a sea-rail transportation system, which considers stochastic travel time, stochastic transfer time, and stochastic container demand. Given candidate train and ship services, we develop a two-stage chance constrained programming model for this problem with the objective of minimising the expected total cost. The first stage allows for the selection of operated services, while the second stage focuses on the determination of intermodal container routes where capacity and on-time delivery chance constraints are presented. A hybrid heuristic algorithm, incorporating sample average approximation and ant colony optimisation, is employed to solve this model. The proposed model is applied to a realistic intermodal sea-rail network, which demonstrates the performance of the model and algorithm as well as the influence of stochasticity on transportation plans. Hence, the proposed methodology can improve effectively the performance of intermodal service network design scheme under stochastic conditions and provide managerial insights for decision-makers.

Roll on–roll off (RoRo) shipping represents a maritime segment that could easily form part of an intermodal transport system, as cargo does not need to be lifted in ports; it is ‘rolled’ to and from sea. This paper investigates the operation of RoRo shipping services in Northern Europe, focusing on a set of services chartered by a major shipper whose demand has a great impact on the service design, potentially affecting the frequency of departures and even stipulating the use of specific vessels. The case of cooperation between Stora Enso, a major forest company in Sweden and Finland, and the shipping company Swedish Orient Line (SOL) is analysed, giving some insight into the way these RoRo services operate and manage to integrate successfully into sustainable intermodal transport chains. Despite various initiatives taken by different stakeholders, the level of integration of shipping in intermodal transport chains has been quite slow. This paper’s results could contribute to the identification of barriers that prevent RoRo shipping from being a viable alternative to road transport for certain transport routes and assist in the discovery of policies and incentives that could lead to developing sustainable intermodal transport chains.

At present, intermodal logistics centers play an important role in the world in context of transport and logistics services. The purpose of this paper is to propose the methodology for selecting the appropriate storage area design for intermodal transport units (ITU ́s) in intermodal logistics center. In this matter, four different scenarios of storage area design were taken into. Storage area configuration can significantly influence the logistics and transport services productivity and can have a significant impact on the economics effectiveness of the enterprise. In the paper, the AHP method is used in the context of selecting the appropriate design. This method is able to assess each design in regard to each of the determined criterion and finally prioritize all the designs.

In intermodal freight transport context, the selection process of appropriated transport services that fit with user requirements is a big challenge, this master thesis project analyze different alternatives to improve that process based on reputation information of transport providers. Reputation is a social abstract concept which is analyzed in this research establishing a categorization of reputation parameters in the freight transportation context. Using this categorization is proposed two different architectures of reputation systems to manage the sources and processing of this kind of data. This project is based on a framework to develop generic system architecture for intermodal transport management based on previous European efforts.

Many North American cities have recently opened or extended existing heavy and light rail systems to provide high-quality public transport alternatives. Due to the high capital and operating costs of rail transit, however, expanding the service coverage in a cost-effective manner requires more flexible and less capital-intensive supplementary modes such as buses. Integrating bus and rail services well can allow a transit system to serve a broad variety of travel needs. One recent example of a city pursuing rail transit is San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the 11-mile Tren Urbano heavy rail line is now under construction and expected to open in 2002. Tren Urbano will connect with existing bus and público (privately-operated jitney) systems. Over time, bus and pdiblico services have generally declined as the region has grown more automobile-dependent. This thesis considers the broad question of how to integrate bus and rail services successfully, focusing on the transition from a bus-only system to an intermodal system. Specifically, this thesis first develops a framework for analyzing specific integration strategies and evaluates several potential approaches a transit agency can pursue. It then discusses various planning principles that can assist decision-makers with strategic and tactical integration issues. Some of these issues include operating arrangements, fare integration, network design, and schedule coordination. To support these principles and to provide insight for the San Juan case, this research evaluates the intermodal integration experiences of five cities in the United States (Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, Washington, and Portland). In some cases, transit became more effective in both traditional and non-traditional travel markets when buses were used to supplement rather than compete with rail. In other cases, inattention to buses and a general lack of schedule, fare, and route coordination resulted in less favorable outcomes. Finally, this thesis applies the analytical framework, planning principles, and case study lessons to develop and evaluate strategies for integrating San Juan's existing transit network with Tren Urbano. For the buses, it focuses on evaluating service proposals for key corridors and finds that the current network structure is well-suited to feeding Tren Urbano and serving existing bus riders. For the público, it addresses more fundamental institutional issues. It explores the possibility of developing new contracted feeder small bus or van service to Tren Urbano, redirecting routes to avoid direct competition with públicos, and creating "Tren Urbano Plazas" to attract suburban motorists to transit.

The Indian Railways (IR) have, over the past four decades, been steadily losing market share, in both passenger and freight markets. In the case of freight, they have gone from being the dominant mode to being carriers of bulk traffic only. Most of the general goods, high value, traffic has shifted to road. In line with the pattern of economic growth, the manufactured goods sector is the fastest growing sector of the economy. This leads on one hand, to exclusion of JR from an important, and growing, sector of the economy and on the other hand to heavy strains on the already saturated road network, higher environmental dis-benefits and higher costs of petroleum imports. The Container Corporation of India (CONCOR), a subsidiary of IR, is now attempting to enter the domestic freight market, to recapture some of this freight traffic. The present work has been taken up, with the final objective of developing a methodology, for identifying sectors where viable intermodal services can be offered, in comparison to road, as well as rail, services and to determine the price and service levels required for the same. In the absence of any revealed preference (RP) data, as well as any previous work on valuation of attributes for the different sectors, we have used an Adaptive Stated Preference (SP) design for our work. The Leeds Adaptive Stated Preference (LASP) software has been modified and used for the work. Various alternatives have also been examined, with regard to the approach to be used for analysis of the survey data and we have finally decided to use individual level models aggregated using weighted averages as these appear to provide the most robust estimates. We have developed models for costing of, door to door, freight movement by road, rail and intermodal services. These models have been used in conjunction with the demand model to assess the viability of the different services for the sectors considered. Our findings indicate that, using fully allocated door to door costs, rail is a clear leader for distances over about 500 Km, on cost basis alone. However, when the service quality factors are taken into account, intermodal services become more attractive for the high value, damage prone, products while road services are more attractive for the lower value products. Rail services break even under 1500 Km only in a few of the situations considered by us and Intermodal service break even under 1500 Km for a large number of the situations (in case of use of new high speed wagons this breakeven shifts to between 500 to 1000 Km). Rail services would need to match the quality of road services, or be priced on marginal cost basis, to be competitive, as compared to road services. Intermodal services can be quite profitable, with presently attained transit times using the older (BFK) wagons, if they are offered at least thrice a week. The larger firms also appear to be more likely to go for intermodal services, than smaller firms. In case of the newer, high speed wagons, the increased capital costs are offset by the gains due to faster turn-around and there is a substantial improvement in the quality of service (time & reliability) that can be provided. This provides an opportunity for a highly profitable service to be provided with the induction of the new wagons.

Barge transportation is an important research topic that started to draw increasing scientific attention in the recent decade. Considered as sustainable, environment-friendly and economical, barge transportation has been identified as a competitive alternative for freight transportation, complementing the traditional road and rail modes. However, contributions related to barge transportation, especially in the context of intermodal transportation, are still scarce. The objective of this thesis is to contribute to fill this gap by proposing a reactive decision support system for freight intermodal barge transportation from the perspective of the carriers. The proposed system incorporates resource and revenue management concepts and principles to build the optimal set of scheduled services plans at the tactical level. Carriers may thus benefit from transportation plans offering increased flexibility and reliability. They could thus serve more demands and better satisfy customers. One novelty of the approach is the application of revenue management considerations (e.g., market segmentation and price differentiation) at both operational and tactical planning levels. The optimization problems are mathematically formalized and mixed integer linear programming (MILP) models are proposed, implemented and tested against various network settings and demand scenarios, for each decision level. At the tactical level, a new solution approach, combining adaptive large neighborhood search (ALNS) and Tabu search is designed to solve large scale MILP problems. An integrated simulation framework, including the tactical and the operational levels jointly, is proposed to validate the decision support system in different settings, in terms of physical network topology, revenue management parameters and accuracy degree of demand forecasts. To analyze the numerical results corresponding to the solutions of the optimization problems, several categories of performance indicators are proposed and used

Since the birth of the European Union on 1957, the development of a single market through the integration of national freight transport networks has been one of the most important points in the European Union agenda. Increasingly congested motorways, rising oil prices and concerns about environment and climate change require the optimization of transport systems and transport processes. The best solution should be the intermodal transport, in which the most efficient transport options are used for the different legs of transport. This thesis examines the problem of defining innovative strategies and procedures for the sustainable development of intermodal freight transport in Europe. In particular, the role of maritime transport and railway transport in the intermodal chain are examined in depth, as these modes are recognized to be environmentally friendly and energy efficient. Maritime transport is the only mode that has kept pace with the fast growth in road transport, but it is necessary to promote the full exploitation of it by involving short sea shipping as an integrated service in the intermodal door-to-door supply chain and by improving port accessibility. The role of Motorways of the Sea services as part of the Trans-European Transport Network is is taken into account: a picture of the European policy and a state of the art of the Italian Motorways of the Sea system are reported. Afterwards, the focus shifts from line to node problems: the role of intermodal railway terminals in the transport chain is discussed. In particular, the last mile process is taken into account, as it is crucial in order to exploit the full capacity of an intermodal terminal. The difference between the present last mile planning models of Bologna Interporto and Verona Quadrante Europa is described and discussed. Finally, a new approach to railway intermodal terminal planning and management is introduced, by describing the case of "Terminal Gate" at Verona Quadrante Europa. Some proposals to favour the integrate management of "Terminal Gate" and the allocation of its capacity are drawn up.

AbstractCurrently Zhejiang ports have gradually changed from large-scale expansion to high-quality upgrading development, and gradually pay attention to the integrated development with railway, aviation, highway and other transportation modes. In 2019, Zhejiang Province proposed a new development pattern of “Four-port Linkage” with seaports (including inland ports) as the leader, dry ports as the basis, airports as the characteristics and infoport as the link, in which improving the basic service system of sea-river intermodal transport and optimizing the inland waterway network for sea-river intermodal transport are important contents, and cooperate with the requirements of the national outline for the development of inland shipping. With the navigation of a series of high-grade channels such as Hangpingshen Canal, Qiantang River, Hangzhou-Ningbo Canal and Oujiang River, the goal of inland shipping revival of “Upgrading north, unblocking south, opening east and revitalizing west” in Zhejiang Province has been basically realized, and all 11 cities in Zhejiang province are connected to the river and the sea. With the emergence of modern information technologies such as big data, IoT and 5G and the rapid development of multimodal transport, the development of smart inland shipping in Zhejiang Province greets new opportunities. This paper discusses the strategy of “Four-port Linkage” to help the high-quality development of Zhejiang smart inland shipping, from the perspectives of developing a comprehensive big data platform for inland shipping, developing a sea-river intermodal transport service information system, promoting the linkage of inland shipping information systems across provinces and cities, and suggesting smart inland shipping typical projects.

AbstractThis chapter contains the final stakeholder analysis. It showcases the key actors involved in testing and deploying automated minibuses for public transport in European cities. This assessment helps construct a strategic overview of the expectations, needs, and impacts of the stakeholders and the connections between them. This stakeholder analysis relied on qualitative methods and involved four steps. As a first step, an initial stakeholder scan was conducted. Through a literature review, including both academic and grey literature, and stakeholder mapping techniques, the main stakeholder groups were defined. The second step involved semi-structured interviews to gain a thorough understanding of the objections, perceptions, and information-seeking behaviour of these stakeholder groups. In the third step, a content analysis of the interviews was conducted, which led to the depiction of six key themes. The initial three steps are centred on conducting an analysis at the EU level. The fourth step took a project-level perspective. A literature review and expert interviews were conducted to determine the main relations and themes for the AVENUE ecosystem, based on which the AVENUE stakeholder and mobility services map was developed. The analysis delivers valuable findings: The AVENUE-centred map shows that automated minibuses are expected to be integrated into a multi- and intermodal mobility system and offered as Mobility as a Service (MaaS). There is a need for collective action to settle one legal framework and specific guidelines for automated vehicles (AV) within the EU. Finally, the integration of AV into the mobility system must be promoted in synergy with the goals of Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP). The stakeholder map at EU level demonstrates that not all actors possess equal influence on the advancement of automated minibuses in urban public transportation systems. Primary actors comprise city governments, public transport operators (PTO), manufacturers, software developers, the European Union, and citizens/end-users. The relationship between the city government and the PTO is central. The strategy presents key recommendations for stakeholders, such as: More emphasis should be given to the crucial role of the government and the legal framework in the deployment of automated minibuses. PTOs need more support from the local government, and they should reach out to other key stakeholders such as NGOs and policymakers. A MaaS platform should be operated in collaboration with private and public partners. There should be active involvement from citizens and civil society; this is done through strategic tools for citizens’ participation and inclusion in the debate about AV in general. For AVENUE and similar projects, it is important to involve stakeholders such as civil society organizations, e.g. as driver unions and environmental NGOs. Also, they need to cooperate more with city governments and focus on user-centric services and not only technological achievements.

Intermodal Transport is a system that combines multiple modes of transport, aiming to minimize the disadvantage of each mode while using the advantages of two or more transport modes with maximum efficiency. It provides the advantage of logistics companies by using intermodal transportation services in the competitive market, respecting the environment, as well as providing them with improvements in the cost area, offering more affordable prices to their customers. When our natural resources of Intermodal Transportation, which is a more economical, environmentally friendly, more efficient system, are consumed rapidly, it increases even more in this environment. With this increasing importance, the system tries to explain general information, benefits to natural resources, carbon emission rates, more resource consumption, less risk of accident, examining the information about fixed train and RORO voyages in depth, and using the interview method with the relevant department. Within the scope of this study, the basic issues about the intermodal transportation system, which is in an important position for sustainable logistics, will be explained, and then, within the scope of Intermodal Transportation services carried out by Ekol logistics, RO-RO transportation, block train services and products that are subject to trade are produced or finalized. It tells the consumers how the process is applied in the transportation journey and the benefits provided to the environment, humanity and natural resources while these logistics applications are carried out.

The article presents an analysis of tariffs for international freight traffic along the route Nur-Sultan station (Republic of Kazakhstan) - Mazare-Sharif station (Republic of Afghanistan). The freight charge is determined according to three existing methods for determining the freight charge: based on the Rail-Atlas and Rail-Tarif software package; Uniform Transit Tariff (UTT); International Transit Tariff (ITT). Calculations convincingly show the lowest tariffs for freight transportation, their availability for a wide range of railway customers. Moreover, the advantages of low-price tariffs are given in a tabular format, which creates convenience for users of railway services.

The modal shift represents one of the most important elements that participate in the creation of a sustainable transport system. Insurance of energy supply, climate change, and rising demand for transport services are some of the main issues that the world is encountering. Creating solutions for these challenges will request, in a couple of next decades, that railway transport overtake a big part of transport demand. The primary goal of this paper is to fundamentally change the way of understanding transport services, not just as a service of individual modes of transport but as a service in a continuous intermodal chain of transport supply. The perspective of the railway sector in B&H is to increase the quality of transport services through combined transport. Selecting the way of transport is a typical multi-attribute problem. In this paper, the House of Quality (HOQ) was used as a tool for analyzing relevant decisions that represent QFD (Quality Function Deployment) information. By raising the quality of service of combined transport with the usage of the QFD method, through quality houses, the railway sector in B&H will be able to ensure a bigger market position, supporting greening of transport and the Single European Railway Area.

The Hiawatha Service is an Amtrak intercity passenger rail service operating a 90-mile route between Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois. The route has experienced a steady growth in ridership in recent years, carrying more than 815,000 passengers during the 12-month period ending September 2011. Owing to the route’s trip-time competitiveness with the automobile, frequent daily service, an intermodal connection with the airport in Milwaukee, and the multi-state funding partnership between the states of Wisconsin and Illinois, the Hiawatha Service is a model of how passenger rail can be an integral part of the multimodal transportation system in an intercity corridor. In January 2011, researchers from the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) passenger rail research group, with financial support from the University Transportation Center for Mobility (UTCM) and in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), initiated a research project to examine the mobility impacts of the Hiawatha Service intercity passenger rail route. One of the major elements of this research project was an on-board survey of Hiawatha Service passengers, implemented in Spring 2011. This paper reports a summary of selected findings from the 2011 TTI/WisDOT Hiawatha Service passenger survey. The survey obtained valuable information about the current passengers, including data on passenger trip purpose, activities before and after the rail trip, travel alternatives to the Hiawatha Service if the route was not available, motivations for choosing rail for the trip, the impact of potential service changes on increasing ridership, and demographic profile data. A majority of passengers traveling on weekdays were regular commuters or business travelers while personal trips are dominant on weekends. Nearly 70 percent of passengers would drive if the rail service was not available, suggesting that the Hiawatha Service plays a critical role in relieving highway congestion in the region. The results of this study can be used by public agency planning staff and policymakers to guide the development of new intercity passenger rail services in similar corridors across the U.S.

The performance of supply chains used to be mainly the concern of academics and professionals who studied the potential efficiencies and risks associated with this aspect of globalisation. In 2021, major disruptions in this critical sector of our economies are making headlines and attracting the attention of policy makers around the world. Supply chain bottlenecks create shortages, fuel inflation, and undermine economic recovery. This report provides a transversal and multidisciplinary analysis of the challenges and opportunities regarding data interoperability and data sharing as they relate to the ‘Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Seaway Trade Corridor’ (GLSLTC)’s intermodal transportation and trade data strategy. The size and scope of this trade corridor are only matched by the complexity of its multimodal freight transportation systems and growing urbanization on both sides of the Canada-US border. This complexity is exacerbated by the lack of data interoperability and effective collaborations between the different stakeholders within the various jurisdictions and amongst them. Our analytical work relies on : 1) A review of the relevant documentation on the latest challenges to supply chains (SC), intermodal freight transport and international trade, identifying any databases that are to be used.; 2) A comparative review of selected relevant initiatives to give insights into the best practices in digital supply chains implemented in Canada, the United States, and the European Union.; 3) Interviews and discussions with experts from Transport Canada, Statistics Canada, the Canadian Centre on Transportation Data (CCTD) and Global Affairs Canada, as well as with CIRANO’s research community and four partner institutions to identify databases and data that they use in their research related to transportation and trade relevant data availabilities and methodologies as well as joint research opportunities. Its main findings can be summarized as follow: GLSLTC is characterized by its critical scale, complexity, and strategic impact as North America’s most vital trade corridor in the foreseeable further intensification of continental trade. 4% of Canadian GDP is attributed to the Transportation and Logistics sector (2018): $1 trillion of goods moved every year: Goods and services imports are equivalent to 33% of Canada’s GDP and goods and services exports equivalent to 32%. The transportation sector is a key contributor to the achievement of net-zero emissions commitment by 2050. All sectors of the Canadian economy are affected by global supply chain disruptions. Uncertainty and threats extend well beyond the COVID-19 Pandemic. “De-globalization” and increasing supply chains regionalization pressures are mounting. Innovation and thus economic performance—increasingly hinges on the quantity and quality of data. Data is transforming Canada’s economy/society and is now at the center of global trade “Transport data is becoming less available: Canada needs to make data a priority for a national transportation strategy.” * “How the Government of Canada collects, manages, and governs data—and how it accesses and shares data with other governments, sectors, and Canadians—must change.”

This study explores the question of whether California's freight system is staying competitive with other US regions. A novel analytical framework compares supply chain performance metrics across multiple US states and regions for seaports, airports, highways, freight rail service, and distribution centers by combining the Performance Evaluation Matrix (PEM), Competitive Position Matrix (CPM), and Business Process Management (BPM) approaches. Analysis of industry data and responses from structured interviews with 30 freight industry experts across 5 transportation sectors suggests that California's freight system is competitive for seaports, airports, and freight rail; however, highways and distribution centers have room for improvement with respect to travel time reliability and operation costs, and California should prioritize infrastructure investments here. To stay competitive with the Texas and North East regions, state investments could also expand seaport container terminals and air cargo handling facilities, improve intermodal port connections and management of flows of chassis, container trucks, empty containers to ameliorate cargo backlogs and congestion on highways, at the ports, and at warehouses. The state could also invest in inland ports, transporting goods by rail directly from seaports to the Inland Empire or Central Valley.
