It is recognised that the overall success of a business depends very much on the quality of management planning, and management needs relevant information in order to plan effectively. However, most management information systems are centered on information obtained in-house. Very little emphasis is placed on external information, except some very general information published by Government bodies. If it is possible to incorporate information from other similar firms into the analysis, a firm will be able to plan and therefore compete more efficiently and improve its overall performance. The application of interfirm comparison studies as an analytical tool to aid management in planning and performance improvement has been well developed and widely accepted in many developed countries. This paper explains the first application of interfirm comparison studies on a wide and comprehensive scale in Singapore, with particular reference to the garment industry business.

In this paper the authors describe a method to integrate explanatory business analytics in OLAP information systems. This method supports the discovery of exceptional values in OLAP data and the explanation of such values by giving their underlying causes. OLAP applications offer a support tool for business analysts and accountants in analyzing financial data because of the availability of different views and managerial reporting facilities. The purpose of the methods and algorithms presented here, is to extend OLAP applications with more powerful analysis and reporting functions. The authors describe how exceptional values at any level in the data, can be automatically detected by statistical models. Secondly, a generic model for diagnosis of atypical values is realized in the OLAP context. By applying it, a full explanation tree of causes at successive levels can be generated. If the tree is too large, the analyst can use appropriate filtering measures to prune the tree to a manageable size. This methodology has a wide range of applications such as interfirm comparison, analysis of sales data and the analysis of any other data that possess a multi-dimensional hierarchical structure. The method is demonstrated in a case study on financial data.

Conversation with a remote person can interfere with performing vision-based tasks. Two experiments tested the role of general executive resources and spatial attentional resources in this interference. Both experiments assessed performance in vision-based tasks as participants engaged in a language task involving a virtual remote speaker. In both experiments, the language task interfered with the vision task more when participants were speaking or planning what to say next than when they were listening. In Experiment 1, speaking or planning what to say next were also associated with higher interference from a visual distractor than listening, indicating that preparing to speak and speaking pose higher executive requirements than listening. In both experiments, localizing the voice of the remote speaker to the front of participants slightly reduced interference in comparison to other directions. This suggests that remote conversation requires spatial attention resources for representing the position of the remote person.

AbstractShade effect is a defect of the images very often invisible for human vision perception but may cause difficulties in proper image processing and object detection especially if the aim of the task is to proceed detection and quantitative analysis of the objects. There are several methods in image processing systems or presented in the literature, however some of them introduce unexpected changes in the images, what may interfere the final quantitative analysis. In order to solve this problem, authors proposed a new method for shade correction, which is based on simulation of the image background based on analytical methods which return pixel values representing smooth grey level changes. Comparison of the effects of correction by applying standard methods and the method proposed are presented.

To date little empirical research has been undertaken into relationship atmosphere, yet the literature leads one to the conclusion that this is a key or central factor in developing the relationship between firms and in shaping the characteristics of that relationship over time.Given that the dimensions of atmosphere are only observable by the individual from a subjective standpoint, and that therefore emotion and subjective perception will inevitably intercede, this omission is startling to say the least. The aim of this study is to respond to this research gap and explore the nature and importance of perceptions of relationship atmosphere in business markets. In order for this exploration to be effective, a research methodology was designed to gather data, and three research questions were identified as having implications for the study of relationship atmosphere. The findings as reported in this thesis present a new view of relationship atmosphere and its role in inter-firm relationships. In view of the findings, a submariner analogy is presented to represent accordant and discordant perceptions of atmosphere in individual relationships. Additionally a revised interaction model is proposed to represent the new view of relationship atmosphere as a product of the perception of the individual parties to the relationship

This chapter considers an array of new technologies developed for bulk collection and data analysis that are sometimes connected by critics with mass surveillance. While the use of such technologies can be compatible with democratic principles, the NSA’s system of bulk collection has been likened to that practised by the Stasi in the former German Democratic Republic. Drawing on Pettit’s concept of domination, we dispute the comparison, conceding nevertheless that bulk collection carries risks of intrusion, error, and damage to trust. Allowing that some surveillance is bound to be secret, we insist that secrecy must be limited, and subject to democratic oversight. Even if NSA-type surveillance is not a modern reincarnation of Stasi oppression failures of oversight make it objectionable from the perspective of democratic theory. More generally, surveillance technologies interfere with individual autonomy, which liberal democratic states are committed to protecting, whether the agent making use of them is a state or private company.

The book discusses the importance of global competition in biomedical and new-technology sectors to understanding international trade and investment in the twenty-first century. It argues that countries that pursue networked technonationalism (NTN) have been the most effective in improving innovation capacity and fostering frontier-industry growth. Technonationalism is state-led strategic investment in new technologies, perceived as key to national security. From the most closed system (Japan’s classic technonationalism) to the most open, or technoglobal system (Singapore) technationalism exists on a continuum. A typology of knowledge and network regimes is proposed to explain variations in domestic capacities, institutions, and policy and network practices. Comparisons of human capital development (STEM education), knowledge production (scientific citations and patents), institutions supporting innovation (technology licensing organizations, incubators), and interfirm networks and international openness (inward foreign direct investment, engaging with diaspora, and immigration) elucidate distinctions.

Sickle cell disease (SCD), a chronic genetic disorder, can produce a host of potentially life-threatening complications that may have an impact on the physical integrity and psychosocial adaptation of the affected child or adolescent. The nature of SCD presents many risk factors, particularly for those children with the most severe form, sickle cell anemia (hemoglobin [Hb] SS). Most common and significant is that SCD involves recurrent, unpredictable pain that can interfere with daily functioning, including social activities and school attendance. Treatment for SCD varies in intensity and invasiveness depending on severity of complications. It may involve daily management (i.e., hydration, restrictions on activities, prophylactic antibiotics, and pain management) as well as preventive follow-up care. Regular blood transfusions are required for children who have had stroke, are at risk for stroke, or experience severe pain crises. Alternative solutions for those with the most severe disease include hydroxyurea and bone marrow transplant. Children with SCD experience pain episodes that vary in severity, duration, and frequency (Brown, Doepke, & Kaslow, 1993). In children with SCD, intense pain episodes often result in repeated hospitalizations and absences from school (Brown, Doepke, et al., 1993). In addition, some forms of pain management, including limitation of physical activity, may interfere with children’s ability to participate in sport activities or to engage in peer relations when they are experiencing a pain crisis. Moreover, the occurrence of cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs) or stroke can have an impact on academic achievement and long-term occupational outcomes (Lemanek, Buckloh, Woods, & Butler, 1995). Although comparisons to other pediatric populations may be useful for understanding processes involved in adaptation, there are aspects of the lives of children and adolescents with SCD, and of their disease, that require a specifically modified approach to the investigation of psychosocial adaptation and application of the current pediatric literature. These issues include the genetic nature of this life-threatening and life-shortening disease, the high prevalence of the disease in African American individuals in the United States, and the multiple stressors faced by children and adolescents with SCD.

Biologically active polymeric materials (BAPM) with prolonged activity have been created on the basis of ecologically safe, economically expedient water xanthan (XA)- and castor (CO)/xanthan-comprising ionomer polyurethanes (IPU) which are aggregatively stable, capable of water dilution, with the size of micelles 250-270 nm and water absorption up to 220%. IPUs of amorphous-crystalline structure (Xa- and CO/Xa-comprising) are characterized by increased degradability as compared to amorphous (CO- comprising) IPUs. After the 12 months of incubation the weight loss of IPU / CO12 / Xa20 due to the synergistic effect of the components is 71%, while the additive contribution of the components and their total content are equaled 43.6%, 32.0%, respectively. Changing the polyether nature and/or introduction of Xa into the IPU structure allow to reduce of adhesive effects from 1.43 to 0.20 MPa, sufficient for "sticking" of BAPM on the plant surface and to reduce the surface tension, and for formation of a non-monolithic film on plant surface, and, thus, will not interfere with the activity of the plant photosynthetic apparatus. 170 BAPM with prolonged action was obtained by chemical and physical immobilization into the IPU macrochain of the domestic polyfunctional biological product Averkom-N. After pre-sowing treatment of seeds of grain and vegetable crops with BAPM, their growth-stimulating activity was established: an increase in biomass up to 60% compared to 40% after treatment with Averkom-N; an increase of: tomatoes productivity (24%), average weight of fruits (30%), and a decrease of: plants’ damage by diseases in 5-8 times and the level of nitrates in comparison with Averkom-N. BAPM increase the productivity of agrophytocenoses, the resistibility of agricultural crops to abiotic and biotic stresses, yield, improve the quality of products, and improve the ecological state of the environment.

Abstract In recent years, various industries become increasingly aware of the importance of mental health. Mental health is closely related to the management of psychosocial hazards in the workplace. The oil and gas industry is considered to be one of the laggards in the management of workers’ psychosocial hazards and mental health even though mental health is considered to affect workers’ health and operational safety. Workplace bullying is a phenomenon that can give adverse effects to individual workers and the organization. For workers, bullying can interfere with physical health, psychological stress, and satisfaction with life and work. This paper discusses prevalence of workplace bullying, psychological stress, and satisfaction with life of workers in the upstream oil and gas industry. The phenomenon experienced by workers on Sites is compared with the experience of the office workers in this paper, with no significant differences found between the incidence of bullying and satisfaction with life between the two populations. On the other hand, there is a significant difference in the psychological stress and chronic diseases reported by the respondents. Site workers experience higher psychological stress and more reported chronic health disorders than the office workers.

While plain vanilla OpenFOAM has strong capabilities with regards to quite a few typical CFD-tasks, some problems actually require additional bespoke solvers and numerics for efficient computation of high-quality results. One of the fields requiring these additions is the computation of large-scale free-surface flows as found e.g. in naval architecture. This holds especially for the flow around typical modern yacht hulls, often planing, sometimes with surface-piercing appendages. Particular challenges include, but are not limited to, breaking waves, sharpness of interface, numerical ventilation (aka streaking) and a wide range of flow phenomenon scales. A new OF-based application including newly implemented discretization schemes, gradient computation and rigid body motion computation is described. In the following the new code will be validated against published experimental data; the effect on accuracy, computational time and solver stability will be shown by comparison to standard OF-solvers (interFoam / interDyMFoam) and Star CCM+. The code’s capabilities to simulate complex “real-world” flows are shown on a well-known racing yacht design.

Abstract A commercial-scale Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) floating plant will be attached a large diameter Cold Water Pipe (CWP). There are concerns about unstable vibration and changes in the dynamic characteristic due to too large mass flow rate. Since the vibration may interfere development of larger capacity plant, comprehending the phenomena have generated considerable interest. The main objective of this study is to confirm whether the theory that describes the vibration of submerged fluid-conveying pipe reproduces the real phenomena through a tank experiment. We construct the experiment eliminated possible disturbances, and the free damping vibration of polycarbonate pipe of 4 m length is measured during water intake. In order to compare the experimental pipe and theoretical models, the damping characteristics are identified from the results without internal flow. As a result of the comparison, although the theoretical model using the inlet end condition reproduces basically reproduced the experiment, we observe a three dimensional nonlinear behavior that could not be predicted by the theory. We believe that this experiment will serve to improve the theories.

The three-dimensional flow in centrifugal impellers is investigated on the basis of a detailed analysis of the results of numerical simulations. In order to gain confidence in this process, an in-depth validation is performed, based on computations of Krain’s centrifugal compressor and of a radial pump impeller, both with vaneless diffusers. Detailed comparisons with available experimental data provide high confidence in the numerical tools and results. The appearance of a high loss ‘wake’ region results from the transport of boundary layer material from the blade surfaces to the shroud region and its location depends on the balance between secondary and tip leakage flows and is not necessarily connected to 3D boundary layer separation. Although the low momentum spots near the shroud can interfere with 3D separated regions, the main outcome of the present analysis is that these are two distinct phenomena. Part I of this paper focuses on the validation base of the numerical approach, based on fine mesh simulations, while Part II presents an analysis of the different contributions to the secondary flows and attempts to estimate their effect on the overall flow pattern.

The design and operation of a chain mooring for a wave energy converter (WEC) is considered. Experimental measurements of a mooring line were conducted in the Heriot-Watt University wave basin at a scale of 1:10. The laboratory procedures were designed to resemble tests undertaken earlier in the year at ‘full’ scale in 24 m water depth. This paper describes and compares these measurements and relates the results to earlier work on mooring lines by Webster [1]. Measurements of both the damping and response frequencies of the mooring are described. Although the present results support partly the conclusions of the earlier work, care must be taken in how these are applied when one is considering mooring line design for WECs. It is concluded that there are significant differences for a WEC for both operational and limit state design in comparison with a more conventional offshore system such as an FPSO or CALM. Although the primary requirement is still one of station-keeping two further considerations may be of great importance. Firstly if a ‘farm’ of devices is to be considered then limitations in sea space may necessitate that the devices be relatively densely packed. This will mean that the ‘footprint’ of the mooring should be constrained, to ensure that the moorings from each device do not interfere with one another and this will have great significance for the loading experienced by the line. This can be exacerbated by variations in tidal range which will have a larger effect in comparison with a conventional deepwater mooring. A second factor may arise if the mooring system response is critical to the WEC energy extraction process. If the mooring becomes part of the ‘tuned’ system then changes in the mooring properties of damping and natural frequency could seriously affect energy conversion efficiencies.

Abstract In aero-engines, it is important to predict the behavior of shear flows in the different parts such as bearing chambers or gearboxes. In bearing chambers, the thickness distribution of wavy films is well studied as two-phase flows are still very hard to predict depending on the case. Experimental studies remain very expensive to carry out and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) still struggles with two-phase flow prediction especially when a sharp interface between the two phases must be modelled. CFD is used to predict the oil film thickness distribution and interface velocity at different engine operating conditions. Currently Reynold-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) CFD uses a semi-empirical method of turbulence damping, which is inaccurate for wavy films and so impacts the modelling of bearing chambers and gearboxes. With the objective of improving RANS models from Large Eddy Simulation (LES) methods, the Volume of Fluid (VOF) and Euler-Euler methods for two-phase flow modelling are investigated in this study. The Volume of Fluid (VOF) approach assumes a single set of momentum equations for the two phases and volume fractions are 1 or 0 everywhere except in the interface region. An alternative to VOF, is the Euler-Euler method with interface sharpening for shear flows. This approach assumes one set of momentum equations per phase but a shared field of pressure. The VOF and Euler-Euler approaches are compared in this study using LES with the CFD code OpenFOAM v6. The case study is based on experimental work investigating stratified flow in a horizontal channel that will be further detailed in the paper. In this study, a simplified 3D periodic channel filled with two distinct phases: air and water is used. A flow regime is studied in which flows are fully developed and the water phase has a much smaller velocity than the air phase in order to obtain a shear flow. Numerical results are compared with experimental measurements from the literature. With OpenFOAM, the VOF solver used for the study is interFoam and the Euler-Euler solver used is reacting-MultiphaseEulerFoam. Velocity profiles, shear-stress profiles and kinetic energy profiles are compared with experimental measurements for the assessment of the two flow solvers. Maps of vorticity magnitude are also provided to support the comparisons between the Euler-Euler and the VOF approaches as well as an appropriate vortex identification method.

Hydraulic pressure amplifiers of the cylinder type are much appreciated in hydraulic systems where high pressure work is needed only for a limited period of time, while during the remaining duty cycle the system operates at a standard level of pressure. The use of these elements allows the designer not to oversize the system, which will perform the work with a considerable power saving, confining the high pressure operation only on the side of the hydraulic cylinder. This works describes the modelling and simulation of a compact cartridge pressure amplifier for linear actuators. The cartridge amplifier is able to double or more the pressure in the system when needed and to not interfere during normal operation of the system. It has been designed to fit in the narrow space of the rod of normal hydraulic cylinder, being extremely compact and efficient. Designing such a component and the study of the main design parameters influence have required a strong work of modelling and simulation, performed with a lumped parameters approach to depict the dynamic behaviour of the amplifier. This work illustrates the building of the model and a first comparison between simulated and experimental data. Moreover, the simulation activity is enlarged to analysis of the influence of some operating and design parameters on the amplifier dynamic behavior.

We studied 31 patients with monoclonal gammopathy (MG), 10 of them secreting monoclonal antibodies (MoAb) of the G class, 13 of them IgM and 8 IgA. We also studied 15 healthy age- and sex-matched control subjects. On each subject we evaluated whole blood aggregation (WBA) in response to ADP, collagen, epinephrine and arachidonic acid in parallel with PRP aggregation according to the method of Born. We wondered whether WBA could provide us further information on the interference of MoAb on platelet function. Agonists and concentrations which yielded statistically significant results in comparison with controls will be reported.IgM MG: Increased WBA to epinephrine 5 and 10 μM (p < 0.01) and ADP 4 and 6 μM (p < 0.001). Increased PRP aggregation to ADP 1 μM (p < 0.001) and collagen 1 μg/ml (p < 0.001).IgA MG: increased WBA to ADP 1 μM (p < 0.001). No difference in PRP aggregation.IgG MG: no difference in WBA. Reduced PRP aggregation in response to ADP 1 μM (p < 0.01) and arachidonic acid 0.5 mM (p < 0.01).We conclude that high molecular weight Ig (IgM pentamers and IgA dimers) seem to play a role in WBA, causing an increased aggregatory response when measured as impedance variation; on the other hand, low molecular weight Ig (IgG) seem to interfere directly with platelet function, causing a decreased aggregation. The mechanism underlying this phenomenon is still unclear.Supported by Grant n° 13 by Regione Piemonte.

In the design of an axial compressor, many designers take advantage of this technology and employ contracted shroud. What is its impact on tip leakage flow and overall performance of the axial compressor? What is its mechanism? In this paper, the NASA Rotor67 is taken as a research case, and parameterized study is conducted to investigate the effects of shrouds with different inclined angles. The inclined angles range from 0° to 13°. Based on the above described plan, numerical simulations are conducted to the original rotor67 and its modified versions with inclined shroud. To remove factors that might interfere the results, original Rotor 67 and all the blades with modified shroud should be compared to their optimal design status. Adjoint optimization is used to give the optimum blade corresponding to each shroud with different blade inclined angles. Then adjoint optimization was used again to give the optimum meridional flowpath for all the cases with different shroud inclined angles. This provides a powerful tool to evaluate the accuracy of the aforementioned prediction. A detailed comparison is made between the original flowpath and the optimized ones. Numerical results are analyzed in detail between original Rotor67 and its modified versions. The results show that the shroud inclined angle has an effect on the overall performance of the blade. It will also redistribute the velocity triangles and the chordwise distribution of aero load in the tip region. Hence it exerts great influence on the tip leakage flow field in the meantime. Shroud with suitable inclined angles can suppress the developing of leakage vortex , and the best-inclined angle for rotor 67 is found to be roughly 11°.

ABSTRACT Background: Dementia is a collective term for several diseases that affect memory, other cognitive abilities, and behavior. These diseases can seriously interfere with people’s ability of daily living. This is not a normal phenomenon of aging. With the increasing prevalence of dementia in the elderly, the importance of dementia as a comorbidity of hypertension is increasing. However, several questions regarding the link between hypertension and dementia remain unresolved. This study aimed to determine Orientation-Memory-Concentration-Test (OMCT) can be used to assess cognitive function in the elderly as an early step in the early detection of dementia. Subjects and Method: This was a comparative study using a case-control design. The study was conducted in Jetis Sub-District, Yogyakarta from September 2019 to June 2020. A total sample of 110 of elderly was divided into two groups 42 elderly (case), and 68 elderly (control) selected by consecutive sampling using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Clock-Drawing Test (CDT) and Orientation-Memory-Concentration Test (OMCT). The dependent variables were the sensitivity and specificity level of the OMCT instrument while the scores of the MMSE. The independent variable was CDT instruments. The collected data will then be processed by diagnostic analysis followed by analysis of ROC and Youden’s index to determine the optimal cut off. Respondents are categorized as having impaired cognitive function if the MMSE (cut off ≤ 24) or CDT (cut off <18) shows a positive result. Results: 110 elderlies were involved. A total of 42 elderlies were included in the case population, and 68 elderlies were included in the control population. In the total OMCT population (cut off> 11) it has a sensitivity (29%) and specificity (97%) to the combination of MMSE and CDT. In populations with hypertension OMCT (cut off> 2.5) has sensitivity (68%) with specificity (46%). In a population without hypertension OMCT (cut off> 7) has a sensitivity (55%) and specificity (90%) to the combination of MMSE and CDT. Conclusion: OMCT can be used as a screening tool for cognitive dysfunction in older people with hypertension because of its short duration, ease of use, and can be used in patients with visual impairments. The research problem. Understanding of insect reproduction has been critical to the design of insect pest control strategies including disruptions of mate-finding, courtship and sperm transfer by male insects. It is well known that males transfer proteins to females during mating that profoundly affect female reproductive physiology, but little is known about the molecular basis of female mating response and no attempts have yet been made to interfere with female post-mating responses that directly bear on the efficacy of fertilization. The female reproductive tract provides a crucial environment for the events of fertilization yet thus far those events and the role of the female tract in influencing them are poorly understood. For this project, we have chosen to focus on the lower reproductive tract because it is the site of two processes critical to reproduction: sperm management (storage, maintenance, and release from storage) and fertilization. E,fforts during this project period centered on the elucidation of mating responses in the female lower reproductive tract The central goals of this project were: 1. To identify mating-responsive genes in the female lower reproductive tract using DNA microarray technology. 2. In parallel, to identify mating-responsive genes in these tissues using proteomic assays (2D gels and LC-MS/MS techniques). 3. To integrate proteomic and genomic analyses of reproductive tract gene expression to identify significant genes for functional analysis. Our main achievements were: 1. Identification of mating-responsive genes in the female lower reproductive tract. We identified 539 mating-responsive genes using genomic and proteomic approaches. This analysis revealed a shift from gene silencing to gene activation soon after mating and a peak in differential gene expression at 6 hours post-mating. In addition, comparison of the two datasets revealed an expression pattern consistent with the model that important reproductive proteins are pre-programmed for synthesis prior to mating. This work was published in Mack et al. (2006). Validation experiments using real-time PCR techniques suggest that microarray assays provide a conservativestimate of the true transcriptional activity in reproductive tissues. 2.lntegration of proteomics and genomics data sets. We compared the expression profiles from DNA microarray data with the proteins identified in our proteomic experiments. Although comparing the two data sets poses analyical challenges, it provides a more complete view of gene expression as well as insights into how specific genes may be regulated. This work was published in Mack et al. (2006). 3. Development of primary reproductive tract cell cultures. We developed primary cell cultures of dispersed reproductive tract cell types and determined conditions for organ culture of the entire reproductive tract. This work will allow us to rapidly screen mating-responsive genes for a variety of reproductive-tract specifi c functions. Scientific and agricultural significance. Together, these studies have defined the genetic response to mating in a part of the female reproductive tract that is critical for successful fertllization and have identified alarge set of mating-responsive genes. This work is the first to combine both genomic and proteomic approaches in determining female mating response in these tissues and has provided important insights into insect reproductive behavior.
