Texto completo da fonteThis study summarizes the history of the glial discovery, details their morphology and their physiology and aims at understanding complex interactions between cortical neurons, glia and blood supply during the transition from slow wave sleep to wakefulness in vivo in both anesthetized and naturally sleeping animals. We performed simultaneous intracellular recordings of cortical neurons and glia, together with measurements of cerebral blood flow, extracellular K+ concentrations and local field potentials under anesthesia, during elicited cortical activation with electric stimulation of cholinergic nuclei or under naturally wakefulness of the animal. We suggest that the outcome of the glial behavior depends on the glutamatergic/GABAergic influence of neighboring neurons, on the modulation of the interglial communication pathways, and/or on the ionic traffic across blood vessels.

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis compiles two distinct studies that both document the control of microstructures on rock seismic properties. The first part deals with the development of crystallographic preferred orientations (CPO) in the uppermost mantle associated with melt/fluid-rock interactions, recorded in peridotites xenoliths from the Japan sea back-arc basin. The microstructural and geochemical characteristics of the studied samples reveal that active spreading is associated to uppermost mantle deformation similar to that observed in the Oman ophiolite. At the onset of back-arc spreading, there are no strong interactions between melt percolation and deformation in comparison to continental rift zones, probably due to the relatively small size and short duration of the spreading event. The second part presents a unique database of plagioclase CPO from variously deformed mafic rocks. CPO are grouped in three main types; their characteristics as a function of deformation regime (magmatic or crystal-plastic) are outlined and discussed. Calculated seismic properties of gabbroic rocks show that anisotropy tends to increase as a function of fabric strength, although it is generally weak, due to the competing effect of olivine/clinopyroxene and plagioclase

Texto completo da fontePower systems are evolving significantly due to economic, geopolitical, and environmental factors, notably the increasing integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) interfaced through power electronic converters, known as Inverter-Based Resources (IBR). This shift from synchronous machine (SM)-dominated systems to IBR-dominated systems introduces challenges such as reduced inertia, intermittency, and stability issues. Traditional stability analysis and modeling techniques, which assume slower dynamics inherent in SMs, are inadequate for the fast dynamics of IBRs. The emerging dominance of IBRs necessitates the development of detailed Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) models, which are computationally intensive but essential for capturing the fast dynamics of modern power systems. Existing stability classification frameworks, historically based on SM-dominated systems, are being revised to incorporate IBR influences, introducing new stability categories like Converter-Driven Stability (CDS). This work investigates novel insights into the interactions between SMs, IBR unit dynamics, and network dynamics that have been overlooked in the literature. It provides a comprehensive framework that is open-source and adaptable for generic power system topologies, allowing for scalable results and analyses. Furthermore, the proposed framework is utilized to determine optimal allocations of virtual inertia and damping in low inertia power systems to enhance frequency stability metrics

Texto completo da fonteThe work presented in this thesis concerns the study of the interaction of low energy multiply charged ions (few tens of keV) with molecules of astrophysical relevance, either in molecular or in cluster form. It is the main aim to study the fundamental processes which occur when molecules and clusters of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are colliding with multi-charged ions (MCIs). During this interaction the potential energy transported by the ions provokes a charge transfer between the target and the projectile. Consequently, after the collision the molecules or the clusters are singly or multiply charged. We are interested in the stability of these size-finite systems in relation with the excess charge and the internal energy of the system. The different fragmentation channels which have been studied for molecules and clusters depend on their sizes, their structures, their charge states and their internal energies. The studies presented in this thesis, which are the first this kind, give new insight in the stability of the simply and multiply charged cationic clusters of PAH molecules
