While herbivorous insect saliva plays a crucial role in the interaction between plants and insects, its role in the inter-specific interactions between herbivorous insects has received little attention. Pre-infestation of citrus plants with Aphis spiraecola Patch and Aphis (Toxoptera) citricidus (Kirkaldy) exhibited positive and negative effects on the performance (feeding and reproduction) of Diaphorina citri Kuwayama. We explored the role of saliva in this plant-mediated interaction by infiltrating fresh and boiled aphid saliva into plants and detecting D. citri feeding behavior and citrus plant defense response. Leaf infiltration of A. spiraecola saliva disrupted the subsequent feeding of D. citri, indicated by prolonged extracellular stylet pathway duration and decreased phloem sap ingestion duration. By contrast, infiltration of A. citricidus saliva decreased the duration of the extracellular stylet pathway and phloem sap ingestion of D. citri. Furthermore, gene expression analysis showed that several salicylic acid (SA)- and jasmonic acid (JA)-pathway-related genes were activated by A. spiraecola saliva infiltration. However, two SA-pathway-related genes were activated and three JA-pathway-related genes were suppressed following A. citricidus saliva infiltration. Treatment with boiled saliva did not similarly impact D. citri feeding behavior or plant defense response. This study suggests that salivary components (those that can be inactivated by heating) from two citrus aphid species differently affect plant defenses and that they were responsible for the contrasting plant-mediated effects of two citrus aphids on the feeding behavior of D. citri. This study indicates a novel three-way citrus aphid–plant–citrus psyllid interaction.

Parasitism genes encode effector proteins that are secreted through the stylet of root-knot nematodes to dramatically modify selected plant cells into giant-cells for feeding. The Mi8D05 parasitism gene previously identified was confirmed to encode a novel protein of 382 amino acids that had only one database homolog identified on contig 2374 within the Meloidogyne hapla genome. Mi8D05 expression peaked in M. incognita parasitic second-stage juveniles within host roots and its encoded protein was limited to the subventral esophageal gland cells that produce proteins secreted from the stylet. Constitutive expression of Mi8D05 in transformed Arabidopsis thaliana plants induced accelerated shoot growth and early flowering but had no visible effects on root growth. Independent lines of transgenic Arabidopsis that expressed a double-stranded RNA complementary to Mi8D05 in host-derived RNA interference (RNAi) tests had up to 90% reduction in infection by M. incognita compared with wild-type control plants, suggesting that Mi8D05 plays a critical role in parasitism by the root-knot nematode. Yeast two-hybrid experiments confirmed the specific interaction of the Mi8D05 protein with plant aquaporin tonoplast intrinsic protein 2 (TIP2) and provided evidence that the Mi8D05 effector may help regulate solute and water transport within giant-cells to promote the parasitic interaction.

This paper explores the (co-)construction of identities in ritual interaction, by focusing on the choice of interactional styles. ‘Interactional style’ describes a cluster of similar indexical actions within the interaction “frame” (Goffman, 1974) of a ritual. Ritual is a recurrent interaction type, which puts constraints on the individual’s “freedom” to construct their (and others’) identities, in a somewhat similar way to institutional interactions, which have been broadly studied in the field. However, the constraints posed by ritual interactions are different from institutional, and so by examining identity (co-)construction via interactional style choices in ritual contexts, this paper fills an important knowledge gap. I approach interactional style choices through the notions of “role” and “accountability”, and by placing ritual practices within Goffman’s (1981) participation framework. I use examples of heckling at performing arts events as data. By focusing on interactional style, the paper contributes to the present Special Issue dedicated to interactional styles across cultures.

Plant chemicals in the rhizosphere originating from root exudates or sites of previous nematode penetration can influence nematode behaviour, and a number of plant compounds, some present in root exudates, have been shown either to attract nematodes to the roots, or to result in repellence, motility inhibition, or even death. The present work was conducted to isolate small lipophilic molecules (SLMs) emitted by root exudates of Solanum lycopersicum and Oryza sativa to investigate their effect on root-knot nematodes. SLMs extracted, through solid phase extraction, from hydroponically collected root exudates of 40 tomato and rice plants had an inhibitory impact on the motility of second-stage juveniles of Meloidogyne incognita and M. graminicola and showed a nematotoxic or nematostatic (upon dilution) effect on both species. The semiochemicals present in the SLMs induced a very small, albeit statistically significant, effect on stylet thrusting. A small quantity of salivary secretion around the stylet tip and a significant decrease in nematode head movement were observed. The semiochemicals negatively influenced behaviour of M. incognita and M. graminicola by strongly affecting their mobility. Therefore, it is proposed that SLMs present in both tomato and rice root exudates play important roles during the interaction of Meloidogyne spp. with their host plant, and that they might exert a repellent, or allellopathic, effect on these nematodes.

In preparasitic second-stage juveniles (J2) of potato cyst nematode Globodera rostochiensis, six proteins with molecular masses of 30, 31a/b, 32, 39, and 49 kDa were recognized on Western blots by a monoclonal antibody (MGR48) specific for the subventral esophageal glands. All of these subventral gland proteins (svp's) focused in the basic range (pI 6.8 to 8.6) of an immobilized pH gradient. Western blotting showed that the svp's were present in preparasitic and parasitic J2 and not in later juvenile stages and adult females. Minor svp quantities also were observed in adult males. Immunogold labeling of preparasitic J2 showed that the svp's were localized in the rough endoplasmic reticulum and secretory granules of the subventral esophageal glands. Potato root diffusate triggered the secretion of svp's through the stylet, and 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine-hydrogen-oxalate had only a quantitative, additional effect. The forward flow of svp's through the metacorporal pump chamber was confirmed by the presence of svp's in the circular lumen of the esophagus (procorpus), as established by immunoelectron microscopy. Our data provide conclusive evidence that secretory proteins of the subventral glands of G. rostochiensis can be secreted through the stylet and support the hypothesis that the subventral esophageal glands play an important role in the early events of this nematode-plant interaction.

Lythrum species (Lythraceae), found both in the Old and New Worlds, possess heterostyly (macroscopic differences in anther and style lengths). SI is linked with heterostyly in tristylous L. salicaria, allowing for visual identification of compatibility relationships. Five Minnesota populations of distylous L. alatum (short & long styles/anthers) were examined for fertility and linkage between distyly and SI. Pollen was not inhibited from germination, stigmatic penetration, or stylar growth in compatible crosses. Average cross-compatible seed set for each population was 7-33 seeds/capsule for short- and 27-69 for long-styled plants. With the exception of the Iron Horse Prairie population, there were no significant differences in mean seed set/capsule between genotypes, style morphs, or their interaction for compatible crosses. Zero self seed set predominated, although 0.8±1.8 seeds/capsule were produced by short styles and 1.2 ±2.3 by long styles from Iron Horse Prairie. In those individuals that were SI, pollen tube growth was inhibited following self pollinations.

A key feature of sedentary plant-parasitic nematodes is the release of effector proteins from their esophageal gland cells through their stylets into host roots. These proteinaceous stylet secretions have been shown to be crucial for successful parasitism by mediating the transition of normal root cells into specialized feeding sites and by negating plant defenses. Recent technical advances of purifying mRNA from esophageal gland cells of plant-parasitic nematodes coupled with emerging sequencing technologies is steadily expanding our knowledge of nematode effector repertoires. Host targets and biological activities of a number of nematode effectors are continuously being reported and, by now, a first picture of the complexity of sedentary nematode parasitism at the molecular level is starting to take shape. In this review, we highlight effector mechanisms that recently have been uncovered by studying the host–pathogen interaction. These mechanisms range from mediating susceptibility of host plants to the actual triggering of defense responses. In particular, we portray and discuss the mechanisms by which nematode effectors modify plant cell walls, negate host defense responses, alter auxin and polyamine signaling, mimic plant molecules, regulate stress signaling, and activate hypersensitive responses. Continuous molecular characterization of newly discovered nematode effectors will be needed to determine how these effectors orchestrate host signaling pathways and biological processes leading to successful parasitism.

Accurate modelling of complex social systems, where people interact with each other and those interactions change over time, has been a research challenge for many years. This study proposes an evolutionary Digital Twin-Oriented Complex Networked System (DT-CNS) framework that considers heterogeneous node features and changeable connection preferences. We create heterogeneous preference mutation mechanisms to characterise nodes’ adaptive decisions on preference mutation in response to interaction patterns and epidemic risks. In this space, we use nodes’ interaction utilities to characterise the positive feedback from interactions and negative impact of epidemic risks. We also introduce social capital constraint to harness the density of social connections better. The nodes’ heterogeneous preference mutation styles include the (i)inactive style that keeps initial social preferences, (ii) ignorant style that randomly mutates preferences, (iii) egocentric style that optimises individual interaction utility, (iv) cooperative style that optimises the total interaction utilities by group decisions and (v) collaborative style that further allows the cooperative nodes to transfer social capital. Our simulation experiments on evolutionary DT-CNSs reveal that heterogeneous preference mutation styles lead to various interaction and infection patterns. The results also show that (i) increasing social capital enables higher interactions but higher infection risks and uncertainty in decision-making; (ii) group decisions outperform individual decisions by eliminating the unawareness of the decisions of other nodes; (iii) the collaborative nodes under a strict social capital limit can promote interactions, reduce infection risks and achieve higher overall interaction utilities.

Background Conversational agents (CAs) for chronic disease management are receiving increasing attention in academia and the industry. However, long-term adherence to CAs is still a challenge and needs to be explored. Personalization of CAs has the potential to improve long-term adherence and, with it, user satisfaction, task efficiency, perceived benefits, and intended behavior change. Research on personalized CAs has already addressed different aspects, such as personalized recommendations and anthropomorphic cues. However, detailed information on interaction styles between patients and CAs in the role of medical health care professionals is scant. Such interaction styles play essential roles for patient satisfaction, treatment adherence, and outcome, as has been shown for physician-patient interactions. Currently, it is not clear (1) whether chronically ill patients prefer a CA with a paternalistic, informative, interpretive, or deliberative interaction style, and (2) which factors influence these preferences. Objective We aimed to investigate the preferences of chronically ill patients for CA-delivered interaction styles. Methods We conducted two studies. The first study included a paper-based approach and explored the preferences of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients for paternalistic, informative, interpretive, and deliberative CA-delivered interaction styles. Based on these results, a second study assessed the effects of the paternalistic and deliberative interaction styles on the relationship quality between the CA and patients via hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses in an online experiment with COPD patients. Patients’ sociodemographic and disease-specific characteristics served as moderator variables. Results Study 1 with 117 COPD patients revealed a preference for the deliberative (50/117) and informative (34/117) interaction styles across demographic characteristics. All patients who preferred the paternalistic style over the other interaction styles had more severe COPD (three patients, Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease class 3 or 4). In Study 2 with 123 newly recruited COPD patients, younger participants and participants with a less recent COPD diagnosis scored higher on interaction-related outcomes when interacting with a CA that delivered the deliberative interaction style (interaction between age and CA type: relationship quality: b=−0.77, 95% CI −1.37 to −0.18; intention to continue interaction: b=−0.49, 95% CI −0.97 to −0.01; working alliance attachment bond: b=−0.65, 95% CI −1.26 to −0.04; working alliance goal agreement: b=−0.59, 95% CI −1.18 to −0.01; interaction between recency of COPD diagnosis and CA type: working alliance goal agreement: b=0.57, 95% CI 0.01 to 1.13). Conclusions Our results indicate that age and a patient’s personal disease experience inform which CA interaction style the patient should be paired with to achieve increased interaction-related outcomes with the CA. These results allow the design of personalized health care CAs with the goal to increase long-term adherence to health-promoting behavior.

During the last decade, the amount of data has been constantly increasing. These data can come from several sources such as smartphones, audio recorders, cameras, sensors, simulations, and can have various structure. While computers can help us process these data, human judgment and domain expertise is what turns the data into actual knowledge. However, making sense of this increasing amount of diverse data requires visualization and interaction techniques. This thesis contributes such techniques to facilitate data exploration and presentation, during sense-making activities. In the first part of this thesis, we focus on interactive systems and interaction techniques to support sense-making activities. We investigate how users work with diverse content in order to make them able to externalize thoughts through digital annotations. We present our approach with two systems. The first system, ActiveInk enables the natural use of pen for active reading during a data exploration process. Through a qualitative study with eight participants, we contribute observations of active reading behaviors during data exploration and design principles to support sense-making. The second system, SpaceInk, is a design space of pen & touch techniques that make space for in-context annotations during active reading by dynamically reflowing documents. In the second part, we focus on techniques to visually represent insights and answers to questions that arise during sense-making activities. We focus on one of the most elaborate data structures: multivariate networks, that we visualize using a node-link diagram visualization. We investigate how to enable a flexible iterative design process when authoring node-link diagrams for multivariate networks. We first present a system, Graphies, that enables the creation of expressive node-link diagram visualizations by providing designers with a flexible workflow that streamlines the creative process, and effectively supports quick design iterations. Moving beyond the use of static visual variables in node-link diagrams, we investigated the use of motion to encode data attributes. To conclude, we show in this thesis that the sense-making process can be enhanced in both processes of exploration and presentation, by using ink as a new medium to transition between exploration and externalization, and by following a flexible, iterative process to create expressive data representations. The resulting systems establish a research framework where presentation and exploration are a core part of visual data systems

Designed with the mouse and keyboard in mind, productivity tools and creativity support tools are powerful on desktop computers, but their structure becomes an obstacle when brought to interactive surfaces supporting pen and touch input.Indeed, the opportunities provided by the pen for precision and expressivity have been demonstrated in the HCI literature, but productivity and creativity tools require a careful redesign leveraging these unique affordances to take benefit from the intuitiveness they offer while keeping the advantages of structure. This delicate articulation between pen and structure has been overlooked in the literature. My thesis work focuses on this articulation with two use cases to answer the broad research question: “How to design pen-based interactions for productivity and creativity on interactive surfaces?” I argue that productivity depends on efficiency while creativity depends on both efficiency and flexibility, and explore interactions that promote these two dimensions. My first project, TableInk, explores a set of pen-based interaction techniques designed for spreadsheet programs and contributes guidelines to promote efficiency on interactive surfaces. I first conduct an analysis of commercial spreadsheet programs and an elicitation study to understand what users can do and what they would like to do with spreadsheets on interactive surfaces. Informed by these, I design interaction techniques that leverage the opportunities of the pen to mitigate friction and enable more operations by direct manipulation on and through the grid. I prototype these interaction techniques and conduct a qualitative study with information workers who performed a variety of spreadsheet operations on their own data. The observations show that using the pen to bypass the structure is a promising mean to promote efficiency with a productivity tool.My second project, EuterPen, explores a set of pen-based interaction techniques designed for music notation programs and contributes guidelines to promote both efficiency and flexibility on interactive surfaces. I first conduct a series of nine interviews with professional composers in order to take a step back and understand both their thought process and their work process with their current desktop tools. Building on this dual analysis, I derive guidelines for the design of features which have the potential to promote both efficiency with frequent or complex operations and flexibility in regard to the exploration of ideas. Then, I act on these guidelines by engaging in an iterative design process for interaction techniques that leverage the opportunities of the pen: two prototyping phases, a participatory design workshop, and a final series of interviews with eight professional composers. The observations show that on top of using the pen to leverage the structure for efficiency, using its properties to temporarily break the structure is a promising mean to promote flexibility with a creativity support tool.I conclude this manuscript by discussing several ways to interact with structure, presenting a set of guidelines to support the design of pen-based interactions for productivity and creativity tools, and elaborating on the future applications this thesis opens

The challenge being to manage the complexity of the real-time analysis process, the first contribution of this work consisted in extending the formalism, without losing its generic aspect. The second axis of this work addresses the tutorial aspect of our system. We define au author mode where the tutor is able to generate construction exercises from a solution example drawn by the teacher. The problem specific knowledge is represented by a knowledge graph. This representation enables the tutor to consider all possible resolution strategies, and to evaluate the pupil’s production in real-time. Furthermore, we define an expert module, based on a dynamic planning environment, capable of synthesizing resolution strategies. The tutoring system is able to generate guidance and corrective feedbacks that are adapted to the pupil’s resolution state. The results of our experiment conducted in class demonstrate the positive pedagogical impact of the system on the pupils performance, especially in terms of learning transferability between the digital and traditional support

Ln this thesis we study the developpement of personnal assistant agents. We have developped some mecanisms allowing the implementation of the conceptual models proposed by Ramos (2000). We stress the importance of the adaptativity of these models to the user's actions. During the developpement of the work we perceived that common methods of adaptation are not good enough for adaptative personal assistant agents. Thus, we introduced a new leaming approach (ELA) that has been evaluated and whose results are quite good. Our work ends up with a study allowing the integration of the different representations developed in the prototypes. We have designed a multi-agent representation for managing the different dynamic representations of the user with distributed leaming agents. This representation is modeled by a generic personalized multi-agent system architecture (SMAP) solving the problems introduced by Ramos' centralized architecture and allowing personalization

Much contemporary discourse around democratization of creativity sees technologies supporting creativity as providing access to universally shared capabilities that are otherwise untapped. This encourages evaluation metrics that assess the emergence or development of those specific capabilities. These accounts often overlook the diversity in human capabilities and work styles. This long-standing focus on identifying universally useful tasks contributes to computational diversity instead of epistemological diversity. In this dissertation, I am interested in exploring an alternative design space: one in which computational support enriches, rather than erases, epistemological diversity, namely the diversity of styles in carrying out the same activity. This tension between diversity and generalizability poses important challenges for design. In this dissertation, I consider the intellectual foundations that undergird much of the contemporary rhetoric about creativity. I argue that the traditional stage-based models of the creative process contribute to a disembodied view that promulgate the understanding that all creative processes, at their core, follow the same structural rules. I suggest that this view is incomplete and propose a reconceptualization of the creative process that takes epistemological diversity into account. To do so, I give two empirical accounts of how creative styles are constructed over time in two different creative settings: one in dance improvisation and another in contemporary music composition and choreography. These case studies surface the shifting roles of technology as people repurpose and manipulate it. I reconceptualize the creative process as continuous acts of re-vision, which foregrounds the craftwork that goes into managing shifting perspectives. This understanding provides insight into the limits and opportunities of creative tools, offering critical reflections on the various roles technology may play in the creative process

This paper reports on the analysis of humor negotiation in Spanish, using a database of 148 humorous sequences drawn from 67 colloquial conversations of the VALESCO.HUMOR corpus (accessible at www.observahumor.com; cf. Ruiz-Gurillo, 2021; 2022). To this end, three variables were addressed. First, following Martin et al. (2003), the style adopted by the speaker in their turn was analyzed as affiliative, aggressive, self-defeating or self-enhancing. Affiliative and aggressive styles predominate in the data, whereas self-defeating and self-enhancing styles are underrepresented. Second, we asked how participants are seen to evaluate the verbal behavior within sequences in terms of politeness, mock impoliteness, impoliteness and non-politeness (Sinkeviciute, 2019). Finally, an assessment was made of each sequence regarding how it could be understood as creating intimacy (endogroup sequence) or as a form of confrontation (confrontational sequence). Taken together, these variables (style, evaluation of politeness, and the main effect of the sequence) led to the identification of three main trends: politeness with an affiliative style in endogroup sequences; mock impoliteness with an aggressive style in endogroup sequences; and mock politeness with an aggressive style in confrontational sequences.

Aphids are phloem-feeding insects that represent a major threat to world agriculture. The feeding strategy involves a slender stylet that probes the host tissues using intercellular spaces as the main pathways to reach the phloem. It is thought that pectin degradation facilitates stylet penetration through the cell walls. However, host plants may use this feeding mechanism since they have evolved to sense the byproducts of pectin degradation called oligogalacturonides (OGs) and trigger a defense response. OGs are well-known damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPS) that enhance plant resistance. However, whether plants use this defense mechanism against aphids is unknown yet. We show that pectin and pectin-modifying enzymes were significantly altered during the plant-aphid interaction. As a result, M. persicae infestation induced a significant increase in total PME and PL activities, and a decrease in the methyl-esterification degree of pectin. In addition, OGs treatments in Arabidopsis increase the resistance to M. persicae infestation by reducing their offspring number, settling preference, and feeding performance. This enhanced resistance was related to a high accumulation of ROS and callose deposits, an increase in the transcript level related to salicylic acid (SA) pathway genes, and the activation of the SA signaling pathway.

Abstract Collaborative problem solving can be successful or counterproductive. The performance of collaborative teams depends not only on team members’ abilities, but also on their cognitive styles. Cognitive style measures differences in problem-solving behavior: how people generate solutions, manage structure, and interact. While teamwork and problem solving have been studied separately, their interactions are less understood. This paper introduces the KAI Agent-Based Organizational Optimization Model (KABOOM), the first model to simulate cognitive style in collaborative problem solving. KABOOM simulates the performance of teams of agents with heterogeneous cognitive styles on two contextualized design problems. Results demonstrate that, depending on the problem, certain cognitive styles may be more effective than others. Also, intentionally aligning agents’ cognitive styles with their roles can improve team performance. These experiments demonstrate that KABOOM is a useful tool for studying the effects of cognitive style on collaborative problem solving.

Although there are many teaching styles in higher education, they can usually be reduced to two: the traditional, on campus attendance, lecturing, student-passive style and the newer, distance education, self-paced, student-active style. It is the contention of this paper, illustrated by two case studies of one Spanish and one Australian university, that the differences in technology seem to have evolved due to these different teaching styles. On the other hand, both institutions seem to be in the same stage of technological implementation, although the technological product appears different. A discussion is provided to consider the interaction effects in practice, teaching styles and institutional adoption stage on web based technologies in these two universities.

Technological progress in the field of autonomous vehicles may lead to the introduction of such vehicles into traffic in the upcoming decades. However, user acceptance of the technology is an important factor besides the technical possibility of the introduction of the technology. Since driving is a complex task and people drive differently, they may prefer different driving styles of an autonomous vehicle. Giving the users the possibility to adjust and personalize the driving style of their autonomous vehicle might help with the user acceptance and adoption of the technology. For this purpose, we conducted a driving simulator study wit N=11 participants to investigate whether the participants would like to have the possibility to adjust driving style parameters through a graphical human-machine interface. During the experiment the participants experienced a simulated ride in a fully automated vehicle in a dynamic driving simulator and had the possibility to change driving style parameters like the speed or time-headway of the simulated automated vehicle. After the experiment the participants filled out a questionnaire with items about technology acceptance. Overall, the results of the questionnaire suggest that the participants found the HMIs beneficial. Overall, there was an above average rating of 4.38/5.00 that such driving style personalization HMIs are going to support the driver during the vehicle use. By analyzing the experimental data, we found that most of the participants were able to find a suitable set of driving style parameters before the end of the experiment. We hypothesize that the possibility for a user to adjust some driving style parameters may help the adoption of the technology and its user acceptance.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Driver's driving style has a great impact on lane changing behavior, especially in scenarios such as freeway on-ramps that contain a strong willingness to change lanes, both in terms of inter-vehicle interactions during lane changing and in terms of the driving styles of the two vehicles. This paper proposes a study on game-theoretic decision-making for lane-changing on highway on-ramps considering driving styles, aiming to facilitate safer and more efficient merging while adequately accounting for driving styles. Firstly, the six features proposed by the EXID dataset of lane-changing vehicles were subjected to Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and the three principal components after dimensionality reduction were extracted, and then clustered according to the principal components by the K-means algorithm. The parameters of lane-changing game payoffs are computed based on the clustering centers under several styles. Secondly, a neural network model is designed based on the Matlab nprtool and the principal components taken out earlier as well as the resultant data of clustering are used as inputs to train the model and realize driving style recognition. Next, the freeway ramp lane-changing game is designed, and according to the lane-changing characteristics, the designed lane-changing gains include: speed gain, safety gain, and forced lane-changing gain. The driving style lane change game gain parameters previously derived are matched to the corresponding lane change gains, then the game is solved by Nash equilibrium to get the final lane change results. Finally, the proposed freeway on-ramp lane-changing game decision-making method for freeway on-ramp considering driving styles is validated by simulation under different locations and speeds of freeway on-ramp.</div></div>

Stylistics can be considered as a field of study that crosses text theory, linguistics, and journalism. Although different schools create different approaches to stylistics, each stylistic approach will include in its paradigm some basic factors, such as the reader and the author. This article shows how these factors interact with each other and, ultimately, create the basis for the emergence of a new field in Ukrainian journalism – interactive stylistics. The study is devoted to interactive stylistics, which is considering as a field based on the text’s own pragmatic potential in the context of modern humanities methodology. This discipline acquires a new function: to observe and interpretively explain, firstly, the meaning of interactions between agents (author and recipient) in communication, mediated by the media text, and, secondly, the effect that this interaction brings. At the center of interactive stylistics is the author (journalist), who through the text discusses the content of interactions in relation to his own interests, as well as cultural, social and historical contracts with the reader. The meaning of the expressions used and the general meaning of such interactions arises in the context of communication events, based on the perception of the subjects of communication with the surrounding reality through the assimilation and adequate interpretation of new information. In modern Ukrainian science of communication, the study of interactive stylistics acquires significant potential. It profiles itself in the context of interdisciplinarity and aims to explore interactivity, interpretability, as well as intertextuality (in specific media texts or interdiscourse dialogue). Interactive stylistics is able to meet the needs of communicators as a useful source of instructions on how communication subjects interact and has a chance to achieve success both at the domestic and international scientific level. Due to its scientific perspective of applying the above-mentioned methodology, it is harmoniously integrated among the tendentious linguistic and broader social science and humanitarian disciplines in Ukrainian scientific research or in the wider international context. Keywords: interactive stylistics; stylistics; reverse communication; style; interactivity; media text.

During the evolutionary process of speciation in plants, naturally occurring barriers to reproduction have developed that affect the transfer of genes within and between related species. These barriers can occur at several different levels beginning with pollination-barriers and ending with hybrid-breakdown. The interaction between pollen and pistils presents one of the major barriers to intra- and inter-specific crosses and is the focus of this research project. Our long-term goal in this research proposal was defined to resolve questions on recognition and communication during pollen-pistil interactions in the extended tomato family. In this context, this work was initiated and planned to study the potential involvement of tomato pollen-specific receptor-like kinases (RLK's) in the interaction between pollen and pistils. By special permission from BARD the objectives of this research were extended to include studies on pollen-pistil interactions and pollination barriers in horticultural crops with an emphasis on citrus. Functional characterization of 2 pollen-specific RLK's from tomato was carried out. The data shows that both encode functional kinases that were active as recombinant proteins. One of the kinases was shown to accumulate mainly after pollen germination and to be phosphorylated in-vitro in pollen membranes as well as in-vivo. The presence of style extract resulted in dephosphorylation of the RLK, although no species specificity was observed. This data implies a role for at least one RLK in pollination events following pollen germination. However, a transgenic plant analysis of the RLK's comprising overexpression, dominant-negative and anti-sense constructs failed to provide answers on their role in pollination. While genetic effects on some of the plants were observed in both the Israeli and American labs, no clear functional answers were obtained. An alternative approach to addressing function was pursued by screening for an artificial ligand for the receptor domain using a peptide phage display library. An enriched peptide sequence was obtained and will be used to design a peptide-ligand to be tested for its effect o pollen germination and tube growth. Self-incompatibility (SI) in citrus was studied on 3 varieties of pummelo. SI was observed using fluorescence microscopy in each of the 3 varieties and compatibility relations between varieties was determined. An initial screen for an S-RNase SI mechanism yielded only a cDNA homologous to the group of S-like RNases, suggesting that SI results from an as yet unknown mechanism. 2D gel electrophoresis was applied to compare pollen and style profiles of different compatibility groups. A "polymorphic" protein band from style extracts was observed, isolated and micro-sequenced. Degenerate primers designed based on the peptide sequence date will be used to isolate the relevant genes i order to study their potential involvement in SI. A study on SI in the apple cultivar Top red was initiated. SI was found, as previously shown, to be complete thus requiring a compatible pollinator variety. A new S-RNase allele was discovered fro Top red styles and was found to be highly homologous to pear S-RNases, suggesting that evolution of these genes pre-dated speciation into apples and pears but not to other Rosaceae species. The new allele provides molecular-genetic tools to determine potential pollinators for the variety Top red as well as a tool to break-down SI in this important variety.

Objectives: The overall objective of this research was to gain a better understanding of how potyviruses interact with their aphid vectors. The aim was to design new approaches for prevention of potyvirus spread by aphids. The sub-objectives included: (1). Determination of which of the HCs of different potyviruses effect efficient transmission by specific aphid vectors; (2). Determine regions in the HC that play a role in their compatibility with the vector; (3). Determine the factors within the aphid stylets that modify HC activity in transmission. Background of the topic: Background to the topic: Potyviruses are typical non persistent viruses. They are retained within the vector’s stylets and rapidly lost by the vector. Some potyviruses greatly differ in their ability to be transmitted by different aphid species. The present work centered on analyzing factors that may modify the interactions between the "helper component"(HC), the virions and the aphid species involved. Major conclusions, solutions and achievements: It was established that specificity of transmission may depend on aphid species used. It was also shown that specificity may depend on the affinity between HC and virion. However, the attempts to create activechimericTEV/TuMVHCs or ZYMV/TuMVHCs to identify the regions that determine interaction with a specific vector(s), were not successful. More progress was attained in objective 3: In Kentucky, tests were conducted to ascertain retention tobacco vein mottling virus (TVMV) HC in the stylets of L. erysimicompared to that in M. persicae. Ultra-thin section of stylets of aphids that fed on either TuMVHC or TVMVHC antibodies were treated with gold-labeled goat anti-rabbit antibodies.TuMV was seen in 25% the stylets of L. erysimi when they acquired TuMVHC but not when they acquired TVMVHC. In M. persicae, TVMVHC was present in 30% of the stylets. . Transmission with TuMVHC was not affected by treatment with L. erysimi saliva whereas transmission with PVYHC (which also is not functional in L. erysimi) was consistently reduced by about half. Saliva from M. persicaehad essentially no effect on either HC. The possible role aphid cuticle proteins (which are found on the stylets surface) in the association with the potyviralHC was investigated in Israel. This was done adopting two approaches: (a) isolation of cuticular proteins from aphid cuticle; (b) screening for genes encoding cuticular proteins. In the first approach, we succeeded in extracting proteins from whole homogenized M. persicaeusing concentrated urea. The extracted protein served for preparation of anti cuticular antibodies. In overlay experiments it was found that cuticular proteins specifically bind to ZYMVHC. In addition, a cDNA library of M. persicae has been prepared. Genes encoding for cuticular proteins were ascertained using antibodies to cuticular proteins. This allowed reporting the sequence of the first cuticular gene of aphids and comparing it in six aphid species. Implications, scientific and agricultural: Achievements: (1) Proofs were provided for the role of the specificity of the aphid species to the HC of certain potyviruses; (2) aphid’s saliva was found to affects transmission efficiency; (3) cuticle protein genes were isolated for the first time from aphid species and an association of cuticle protein with the potyviralHC was discerned. Agricultural and/or economic impact of the research findings: At this stage of research, our finding do not bear an agricultural or economic impact.

Nowadays, social media, ICT, mobile technologies and applications are increasingly used as tools for communication, interaction, building up social skills and unique learning environments. One of the latest trends observed in education is an attempt to streamline the learning process by applying educational digital games. Despite numerous research data, that confirms the positive effects of digital games, their integration into formal educational contexts is still relatively low. The purpose of this article is to analyze, discuss and conclude what is necessary to start using games as an instructional tool in formal education. In order to achieve this aim, a complex of qualitative research methods, including semi-structured expert interviews was applied. As the result, the potential of educational digital games to give a unique and safe learning environment with a wide spectrum of build-in assistive features, be efficient in specific training contexts, help memorize studied material and incorporate different learning styles, as well as to be individually adaptable, was determined. At the same time, the need for complex approach affecting the administration, IT departments, educators, students, parents, a strong skill set and a wide spectrum of different roles and tasks a teacher carries out in a digital game-based learning class were outlined. In conclusion and as a vector for further research, the organization of Education Design Laboratory as an integral part of a contemporary educational institution was proposed.

This open file reports geochemical data for stream and groundwater samples collected around the Casino porphyry Cu-Au-Mo deposit, one of the largest and highest-grade deposits of its kind in Canada. The calc-alkaline porphyry is hosted in a Late Cretaceous quartz monzonite and associated breccias in the unglaciated region of west central Yukon. Water chemistry around the deposit was investigated because: (i) the deposit has not yet been disturbed by mining; (ii) the deposit was known to have metal-rich waters in local streams; and (iii) the deposit has atypically preserved ore zones. Stream water samples were collected at 22 sites and groundwater samples were collected from eight sites. Surface and groundwaters around the Casino deposit are anomalous with respect to Cd (up to 5.4 µg/L), Co (up to 64 µg/L), Cu (up to 1657 µg/L), Mo (up to 25 µg/L), As (up to 17 µg/L), Re (up to 0.7 µg/L), and Zn (up to 354 µg/L) concentrations. The stable isotopes of O and H of the groundwaters are essentially identical to the surface waters and plot close to the local and global meteoric water lines, indicating that the waters represent modern recharge, consistent with the generally low salinities of all the waters (total dissolved solids range from 98 to 1320 mg/L). Sulfur and Sr isotopes are consistent with proximal waters interacting with the Casino rocks and mineralization; a sulfide-rich bedrock sample from the deposit has delta-34S = -1.2 permille and proximal groundwaters are only slightly heavier (-0.3 to 3.1 permille). These geochemical and isotopic results indicate that surface water geochemistry is a suitable medium for mineral exploration for porphyry-style mineralization in the Yukon, and similar unglaciated regions in Canada. The atypical geochemical signature (Mo, Se, Re, As, Cu) of these types of deposits are typically reflected in the water chemistry and S isotopes provide a more local vectoring tool.
