Resumo:
This thesis was born in the context of a research activity conducted by Thales Alenia Space Italia, and called Integrated Multifunctional Systems. The name is quite self-explanatory: the research is devoted to the study of Multifunctional Systems (MFSs). The work hereafter described addresses MFSs combining thermal, structural, electronic, and control functionalities. The rationale behind this activity comes from a careful evaluation of mission drivers and constraints for space systems. In the last 30 years, studies have shown that the largest contributors of total spacecraft dry mass are two technology areas: structure and packaged electronics. This information indicates a potentially fruitful area of technology development that would provide significant spacecraft dry mass reduction. Possible interesting areas to be addressed are bus architectures, novel electronic packaging and layout, electronic chassis that also function as structural members, minimization of harness. Moreover, there is increasing interest in the unnoticeable distribution of thermal control and monitoring hardware throughout the system. The challenge is to meet mission requirements taking into account an integrated design that addresses all areas of structural, electrical, component packages, and thermal elements. In particular, for this thesis the aim was to identify different ways of combining electrical and thermal control functions with mechanical structures in order to create a multifunctional system able to save mass and volumes, and simplify integration. The goal of the work was to screen materials and technologies to be used for structural elements, thermal solutions, and integrated electronics, to conceive, design, manufacture, and test suitable prototypes, and to evaluate the application of multidisciplinary design and optimization techniques to this field. The work has been conducted in close collaboration with Thales Alenia Space Italia S.p.A. (TAS-I), and with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)/California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Over a three year timespan, four different demonstrators have been considered: three of them have been developed with TAS-I, and one with JPL. In chronological order, the first prototype is the Advanced Bread Board (ABB), which is a thermostructural panel built in Carbon/Carbon and equipped with distributed electronics and sensors. The second prototype was implemented into three different demonstrators, SDA, SDB, and SDC (respectively, STEPS Demonstrator A, B, and C). They consist of an intelligent, modular, flat, and flexible motherboard which has been mounted on an aluminium sandwich panel, a curved aluminium plate, and a layer of Kevlar fabric. The third prototype is the ROV-E smart skin demonstrator, which is a development of the STEPS motherboard concept, and the fourth prototype is the JPL μRover, which consists of a small 4-wheeled robot made of thermostructural Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). The four prototypes represent subsequent steps toward the realization of a multifunctional system where electronics in flex and rigid-flex form is bounded with structure. The goal is to achieve a more distributed architecture equipped with enough intelligence to handle communication, thermal/environmental control, and actuation. ABB is the first example, where small flat and flex boards with limited intelligence are mounted on a structural substrate with high thermomechanical performances. After the results obtained from ABB, the design flow is ideally split in two branches. The first research branch keeps on the development of flex electronics as a mean to integrate communication capabilities, health monitoring, signal and power harness on many different support materials: the STEPS demonstrators and the ROV-E smart skin concept are products coming from this approach. The STEPS demonstrators show increased dimensions, expanded capabilities, and higher level of on-board intelligence. The ROV-E smart skin brings these characteristics to their maximum extent: the design is focused on an extremely flexible board, able to monitor the surrounding structure and environment, able to actuate loads and to take care of signal and power distribution. On the other hand, the second research branch explores the possibility of using the electronic boards themselves (in rigid-flex configuration) as structural elements: the JPL μRover is the product of this approach. The micro rover is supposed to show the viability of eliminating electronic boxes by transferring all the components on the primary structure, which is therefore made of Printed Circuit Boards based on particular thermostructural materials. This thesis describes the work conducted for the development of integrated multifunctional systems from 2010 to 2012, and is divided in five main chapters, introduced by a preface. The preface itself presents the topic and scope of the work, and describes the research methodology used during activities. It also describes the structure of the thesis and acknowledges relevant contributions. The first chapter is dedicated to the literature review. Its goal is to explore the state of the art, to gather and summarize information on activities that have been performed up to now in the field of Multifunctional Systems. These activities are the foundations on which the work described in this thesis has been conceived, and represent the benchmark for the evaluation of achieved results. Therefore, a section is also included which contains a critical analysis of the activities most strictly related to this thesis. The second chapter presents how the research has been actually conducted, the activities regarding technology study and design, the factual implementation of concepts, the technical description of all different prototypes, and a first glance on results obtained. The third chapter describes in more detail all the findings, including test results and interpretation of data. The fourth chapter focuses on analysis and discussion of results and findings, with particular attention to their position in the context of the initial literature review and possible comparison with closest rivals. The fifth chapter draws conclusions and explains where further work is needed and which activities are going on to bring the multifunctional systems approach from the laboratory to the space vehicle. To broaden the discussion on given topics, or to give additional information on specific technologies, an appendix has been added.

There is a need to perform comprehensive cell biology studies transferable across culture platforms using innovative cellular models. The higher purpose is to bridge the gap between in vitro cell culture and in vivo models. In this thesis a significant advance is presented in the embedding of an innovative optical biophotonic capability for the dynamic interrogation and single cell tracking of human osteosarcoma cells encapsulated in the hollow fiber (HF) platform. Two approaches have been implemented: quantum dot (QD) nanoparticles providing proliferative and cell cycle readouts and an in-fiber light illumination providing global features of particle and cell density. An in vitro HF encapsulation model was developed and characterised against standard two-dimensional tissue culture (TC) using the human osteosarcoma U-2 OS cell line expressing a cell cycle fluorescent reporter (cyclin Bl-GFP). Analysis of the packing and orientation of cells in the HF revealed that they grow like an anchorage dependent adherent layer. Overall cells in the fiber displayed a slower cell cycle traverse and a differential sensitivity to clinically relevant doses of the anticancer mitosis-inhibiting agent Taxol compared to cells under normal TC conditions. Comprehensive gene profiling, with bioinformatics and ontology network analysis, showed that the HF cells presented high steroid related but low differentiation gene expression. Specific biomarkers were indentified, and it is suggested that the HF model displays features that are closer to an in vivo tumour. A flow cytometry cell-tracking approach using QD labelling was validated and applied to the HF model for the first time. This represents an "embedded" biophotonic system where the QD sensors are integrated directly into the seeded cell population and then redistributed through the daughter cells, thus reflecting patterns of lineage expansion. This provides sub-population parameterized information on cell-cell heterogeneity and cell division. A biophotonic HF prototype comprising the integration of direct coupled-light excitation in the HF was conceived, this revealed the potential and limitations to detect die presence of cells inside the HF lumen by analysing light attenuation changes. Finally a "systems cytometry" acquisition concept has been proposed, comprising the use of embedded engineered nanoparticles as single cell "nano-memory" biophotonic intracellular probes.

An intensified gasification system consisting of the gasifier reactor and the clean up system was developed for new feed stocks in pilot plant (ea. 50 kWe output). An industrial system (ea. 1 MWe capacity) scaled up from the pilot plant was also constructed and commissioned. PolyHIPE Polymers (PHP) both in laboratory and industrial scale were produced and functionalized/characterized for gas conditioning and water treatment processes associated with the gasifier operation. The gasification process converts any carbon-containing material into a combustible gas composed primarily of carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane, which can be used as a fuel to generate electricity and heat. Gasification adds value to low or negative feed stocks by converting them to marketable fuels and products Two new feed stocks; bone meal and oil sludge, were gasified in small scale pilot plant gasifier system. The system performance was reliable and there were no major problems in operating the gasifier and performance of the instrumentation during the tests. The most important experimental objective which was to determine the producer gas quality during stabilized continuous runs was successfully achieved. The commissioning of the industrial scale gasifier system was completed during the course of this research. The initial results of commissioning tests which were performed by using wood chips, bone meal and municipal solid waste (MSW) are accounted in this study. The pre-treatment of these feed stock materials were studied as well as gasification characteristics. The main focus of commissioning runs was to evaluate the performance and efficiency of process instrumentation and determine the problems associated with the gasification and pre-treatment systems. The commissioning runs were successful in terms of achieving these main goals. The experiences transferred from the small scale gasification experiments were crucial in understanding and solving the problems associated with the system. The gas qualities from both scale of operation were very similar. 11 Production, modification and demonstration of the potential of polyHIPE polymers as an effective medium for water and gas treatment were also aimed in this study. It was shown that the functionalization of PolyHIPE Polymers could be intensified and the technique resulted in the formation of a new class of nano-structured micro-porous polymers with enhanced surface area and micro and nano-connectivity of the pores. Modification of the chemical and structural characteristics of the PHP was achieved by two novel methods of sulphonation which were developed by intensifying the principles of conventional techniques. Prior to sulphonation PHP demonstrates hydrophobic characteristics, where after sulphonation a hydrophilic form is produced. Sulphonated PHP can act as an ion exchange module and is capable of adsorbing species from a solution or a waste stream. The capability of the PHP as an efficient ion exchange module has been demonstrated by using a nickel solution as the model. The potential of the PHP as a filtering media was also realised by the results obtained in tests conducted with the waste scrubber water from the gasification system. Hydrophilicity is required if dehumidification of the gas streams are desired. The polymers containing 2-vinyl pyridine which were developed by the Process Intensification and Miniaturisation (PIM) Group in the University of Newcastle, already exhibits hydrophilic characteristics and do not require and modification. These polymers were tested for gas purification in a packed column. Production of these polymers in industrial scale was also accomplished. The ultimate aim of the research was to develop an intensified gasification system which employs PHP for both gas purification and water treatment. Gasification operation was successfully demonstrated in both small and industrial scale, as well as the demonstration of the potential of PHP in gas and water treatment processes in bench scale.

The Integrated Theater Assessment Profiling System (iTAPS) takes the original stove-piped Theater Assessment Profiling System (TAPS) software solution and turns it into a robust, data-centric, web-based decision support system for Commander, Second Fleet. ITAPS uses the .Net Framework and ASP.NET/ADO.NET, along with SQL Server to provide a web-enabled application that gives an overarching, abstracted view of the battle space for the Operational Commander while still providing drill-down capability and trend analysis tools if more detail is desired. The software was developed using the extreme programming technique and black box testing methods. A demonstration was performed at Second Fleet to test its acceptability and usability.

Traditionally, the design of a transportation system has focused on either the vehicle design or the network flow, assuming the other as given. However, to define a system level architecture for a transportation system, it is advantageous to expand the system boundary during the design process to include the network definition, the vehicle specifications, and the operations, which couple the vehicle(s) and the network. The integrated transportation system formulation developed in this thesis examines these fundamental components by classifying the decisions required to define them and concurrently optimizing the entire design problem, resulting in a more efficient transportation architecture. The integrated transportation system design models are developed for an air and a space transportation system and an example problem is implemented for each. The integrated air transportation system example of an overnight package delivery network quantifies at least a ten percent improvement in cost over traditional optimization approaches. The formulation for a space transportation system first requires the definition of a space network which is constructed by extending time expanded networks to account for astrodynamic relationships.
(cont.) An Earth-Moon logistics supply example quantifies a 19 percent improvement in total mass in Low Earth Orbit as compared to traditional optimization methods. The improvements in system objective values obtained can be attributed to the reduction in operational inefficiencies for the transportation system. The concurrent optimization of the integrated transportation system design problem employs a new methodology, embedded optimization, to obtain solutions. Embedded optimization allows Simulated Annealing to effectively find good solutions to highly constrained problems by embedding deterministic solvers, such as linear or mixed integer programs, into the perturbation step. Comparing the solutions and computational performance of SA with and without embedded optimization reveals that embedded optimization performs significantly better, with 95 percent confidence.

Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) personnel developed the Video Bus Integrated Telemetry System (VBITS) for air delivery testing at YPG. The system consists of a common rack for mounting both video and telemetry equipment, which makes installation easier and more time efficient. Prior to the one-rack concept, the video, TSPI, and telemetry were all installed as separate entities competing for space, power, and time. Requirements to downlink High-Definition (HD) video from the aircraft prompted research into technological improvements in transmitters, onboard encoders, and recorders. These advances allowed the integration of video, analog sensors, and aircraft bus data into a single telemetry stream. Future advancements will include combining multiple HD video sources in a single downlink.

Algaard, William H. "Integrated implementation system for pseudodynamic testing". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2001. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1374/.

Resumo:
The pseudodynamic test method is a tool for obtaining the non-linear response of structures to transient ground acceleration. The modelling technique relies on representing the inertial and viscous damping components of the equation of motion computationally, while obtaining a measure of the non-linear elastic restoring forces experimentally. A pseudodynamic implementation system is presented, displaying innovations within both the computational and experimental domains. A SDOF pseudodynamic test facility has been designed and manufactured employing a computer controlled servo-hydraulic actuator system. The experimental facility enables displacements of up to 50mm under forces of up to 50kN with all required instrumentation. The experimental apparatus is controlled by algorithms running in the LabView environment, fully integrated within the execution system, rendering the requirement for a hardware controller obsolete. The execution system allows interactive control of the experiments, and offers a large range options with respect to both control and time integration. The execution routine incorporates both the time integration and control algorithms, and combines these such that they effectively execute as an integrated system. This enables semi-continuous implementation of the pseudodynamic tests with very limited resources. A novel, integral form time stepping scheme is proposed, based on an explicit integral form algorithm (Chang et al. 1998) and the Newmark Implicit scheme. The proposed formulation offers an implicit, and thus unconditionally stable alternative to Chang's algorithm without introducing further approximations. This yields improved dissipation and accuracy properties in addition to enabling combination of the integral form schemes' advantages of representing non-linear force variations during a time step with an unlimited time step size. The improvements have been shown both through analytical analyses and numerical examples in linear and non-linear systems. Implementation of the implicit integral form algorithm has been enabled by coding parts of the algorithm directly into the digital controller.

In this work, a 3D-printable multilayer phased array system is designed to demonstrate the applicability of additive manufacturing technique combining dielectric and conductor processes at room temperature for RF systems. Phased array systems normally include feeding networks, antennas, and active components such as switches, phase shifters and amplifiers. To make the integrated system compact, the array system here uses multilayer structure that can fully utilize the 3D space. The vertical interconnections between layers are carefully designed to reduce the loss between layers. Simulated results show good impedance matching and high-directive scanning beam. This multilayer phased array will finally be 3D printed by integrating thermal / ultrasound wire mesh embedding method (for metal) and fused-deposition-modeling technique (for dielectric).

There are many applications that require multiple processors performing real-time tasks and communicating with each other over a common bus or memory. Aptec has developed a real-time multiprocessing system which reduces the integration effort needed in a custom designed system. The system uses commercially available Motorola 68000 series processors each running a real-time kernel. Software has been developed to extend the capabilities of the real-time kernel. This software is called Multiprocessor Services. The software allows tasks running on different processors to communicate with each other and a global shared memory. This paper describes the features of real-time multiprocessor hardware systems, and how the multiprocessor software coordinates the processors to operate as an integrated system.

The Telemetry Integrated Processing System (TIPS) at the U.S. Air Force Western Space and Missile Center (WSMC), Vandenberg AFB, California is a large scale, computer based, telemetry processing and display system installed in the early 80’s. The digital printer/plotters used in the Quick Look Display Area (QLDA) were installed in 1979 and their maintenance support has become critical. Their replacement is now necessary. This paper will present the approach used to solve the replacement of these printer/plotters by off-the shelf commercial equipment. The key objectives of providing users with a similar display output and strict hardware and software compatibility with existing system have been met. In addition, the new equipment installed can meet the display requirements of future developments or upgrades of the TIPS.

Resumo:
To support concurrent design a framework for hierarchical design of a process operating system is developed. A process operating system is defined as the complete collection of control schemes, alarms and operating procedures used for managing the process through all phases of operation. The design of an integrated operating system is approached by decomposing the problem into a hierarchy of operating tasks. Three classes of operating task are identified: regulatory tasks for optimising operation at a steady state, transition tasks for transferring the process from one regulatory state to another and executive tasks which manage the response to discrete events such as alarms and failures. Operating tasks define the requirements for optimisation and failure management. The implementation of an operating task is achieved by the design of a control scheme for which a generic structure has been developed. The structure emphasises the use of explicit models with parameter estimation and control distribution blocks providing the interface between the abstract model used for optimisation and the reality of the underlying system. A knowledge based representation has been developed to support operating system design. Particular attention has been given to the problem of supporting concurrent design of the process and operating system. A representation has been developed that links process design alternatives with operating system design alternatives by their association with a common operating task. A case study that considers the design of a hierarchical operating system for a hydrofluoric acid plant is included in this thesis. The study demonstrates how the operating system may be developed in step with the process design. The hierarchical development of the process is used to help formulate the operating tasks for the operating system design. Through design of the operating system it is possible to provide focused feedback on the process operability requirements. The final operating system structure demonstrates how failure management and optimisation are integrated together.

The Telemetry Integrated Processing System (TIPS) at the U.S. Air Force Western Space and Missile Center (WSMC), Vandenberg AFB, California, is a large scale, computer based, telemetry decommutation and data processing system. This system is utilized to process telemetry data from numerous missile and aircraft programs supported at the WSMC. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, while TIPS was under development, some information on this unique system was presented at the ITC. This paper will present an overview of the operational system as it exists today. Hardware and software components will be discussed. A presentation of the standard, no development cost, features available to Range users will be made. A summary of the current missile/aircraft telemetry systems that must be supported will be included along with some of the special processing developed for these systems. The primary emphasis will be an overview of the system capabilities and the types of telemetry processing encountered in the operational WSMC environment.

An integrated 1553 Data Bus Monitor (DBM) System has been developed at the Naval Air Test Center. The system is capable of monitoring six 1553A or B channels and provides, in separate PCM streams, selected parameter data and all message traffic on the data bus (thruput). Thruput data can be split to two tape tracks per channel for bandwidth conservation. Selected parameter formats can be entered at the flight line with a hand-held programmer which communicates to the DBM via an RS-232 interface. PCM outputs are available for telemetry as well as for on-board recording. Analog and discrete data is incorporated in the system with A/D inputs, parallel inputs, or serial entry of PCM data from a remote PCM system. A 1553 remote terminal provides data to the F-18 mission computer. Existing systems are being used on AMRAAM Development in the F-18 and in follow-on F-18 development at the Naval Air Test Center.

Research on fluorescence-based integrated optical immunoassay multisensing systems has gained growing interest in the last ten years. This is because the systems have the potential to simultaneously detect multiple analytes in a single measurement, and the techniques involved are fast, robust and cost-effective. Therefore they have the potential to replace conventional chromatographic techniques, as the monitoring systems for the rapid assessment of water or food samples. Other areas, such as clinical diagnostics or forensic science also have a demand for highly multiplexed analytical systems. This thesis presents a novel 32-analyte integrated optical fluorescence-based multisensor, and its integration to an automated multi-bio-sensing system. This system is primarily used for detecting organic pollutants in river water. A detailed study was also carried out with a CCD detector system, used to replace the fibre collection and photodiode array system and allow straight forward extension to more than 32 analytes. A direct comparison between these two systems is also presented

The design, simulation and evaluation of an intelligent and integrated load management system is presented in this dissertation. The objective of this research was to apply modern computer and communication technology to influence customer use of electricity in ways that would produce desired changes in the utility's load shape. Peak clipping (reduction of peak load) using direct load control is the primary application of this research. The prototype computerized communication and control package developed during this work has demonstrated the feasibility of this concept. The load management system consists of a network of computers, data and graphics terminals, controllers, modems and other communication hardware, and the necessary software. The network of interactive computers divides the responsibility of monitoring of meteorological data, electric load, and performing other functions. These functions include: data collection, processing and archiving, load forecasting, load modeling, information display and alarm processing. Each of these functions requires a certain amount of intelligence depending on the sophistication and complication of that function. Also, a high level of reliability has been provided to each function to guarantee an uninterrupted operation of the system. A full scale simulation of this concept was carried out in the laboratory using five microcomputers and the necessary communication hardware. An important and integral part of the research effort is the development of the short-term load forecast, load models and the decision support system using rule-based algorithms and expert systems. Each of these functions has shown the ability to produce more accurate results compared to classical techniques while at the same time requiring much less computing time and historical data. Development of these functions has made the use of microcomputers for constructing an integrated load management system possible and practical. Also, these functions can be applied for other applications in the electric utility industry and maintain their importance and contribution. In addition to that, the use of rule-based algorithms and expert systems promises to yield significant benefits in using microcomputers in the load management area.

Presently there is a trend in manufacturing system design from stand-alone, automatic operations to Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM). The success of the integration depends largely on the performance of system control software. This document presents research in the design and implementation of a shop control system, for a CIM facility, using a new method called the three-layer integrated approach. Two basic techniques used in this research are expert systems and object-oriented programming. The CIM system at VPI is an automated manufacturing and assembly system. In designing the control system for this CIM facility, the design of products, production facilities, and overall system must be taken into account. In order to manage this complex system, a control system called the “shop controller” has been developed using C++, an object-oriented programming language. In addition, three real-time simulators for the cell controllers have been developed for testing and debugging the production rules of the expert system. The basic approach taken for the shop control system has several advantages: applied intelligence, program efficiency, reusability of code, and ease of maintenance. Moreover, this approach has a new feature—modularity, which is the result of combining expert systems and object-oriented programming.

Research has shown that five parameters are required to recognize any sign language gesture: hand shape, location, orientation and motion, as well as facial expressions. The South African Sign Language (SASL) research group at the University of the Western Cape has created systems to recognize Sign Language gestures using single parameters. Using a single parameter can cause ambiguities in the recognition of signs that are similarly signed resulting in a restriction of the possible vocabulary size. This research pioneers work at the group towards combining multiple parameters to achieve a larger recognition vocabulary set. The proposed methodology combines hand location and hand shape recognition into one combined recognition system. The system is shown to be able to recognize a very large vocabulary of 50 signs at a high average accuracy of 74.1%. This vocabulary size is much larger than existing SASL recognition systems, and achieves a higher accuracy than these systems in spite of the large vocabulary. It is also shown that the system is highly robust to variations in test subjects such as skin colour, gender and body dimension. Furthermore, the group pioneers research towards continuously recognizing signs from a video stream, whereas existing systems recognized a single sign at a time. To this end, a highly accurate continuous gesture segmentation strategy is proposed and shown to be able to accurately recognize sentences consisting of five isolated SASL gestures.

Many features have been added to mobile devices to assist the user's information consumption. However, there are limitations due to information overload on the devices, hardware usability and capacity. As a result, content filtering in a mobile recommendation system plays a vital role in the solution to this problem. A system that utilises content filtering can recommend content which matches a user's needs based on user preferences with a higher accuracy rate. However, mobile content recommendation systems have problems and limitations related to cold start and sparsity. The problems can be viewed as first time connection and first content rating for non-interactive recommendation systems where information is insufficient to predict mobile content which will match with a user's needs. In addition, how to find relevant items for the content recommendation system which are related to a user's profile is also a concern. An integrated model that combines the user group identification and mobile content filtering for mobile content recommendation was proposed in this study in order to address the current limitations of the mobile content recommendation system. The model enhances the system by finding the relevant content items that match with a user's needs based on the user's profile. A prototype of the client-side user profile modelling is also developed to demonstrate the concept. The integrated model applies clustering techniques to determine groups of users. The content filtering implemented classification techniques to predict the top content items. After that, an adaptive association rules technique was performed to find relevant content items. These approaches can help to build the integrated model. Experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed integrated model performs better than the comparable techniques such as association rules and collaborative filtering. These techniques have been used in several recommendation systems. The integrated model performed better in terms of finding relevant content items which obtained higher accuracy rate of content prediction and predicted successful recommended relevant content measured by recommendation metrics. The model also performed better in terms of rules generation and content recommendation generation. Verification of the proposed model was based on real world practical data. A prototype mobile content recommendation system with client-side user profile has been developed to handle the revisiting user issue. In addition, context information, such as time-of-day and time-of-week, could also be used to enhance the system by recommending the related content to users during different time periods. Finally, it was shown that the proposed method implemented fewer rules to generate recommendation for mobile content users and it took less processing time. This seems to overcome the problems of first time connection and first content rating for non-interactive recommendation systems.

Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Education in the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education of the Faculty of Education at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2013.
Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS) is an appraisal system of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education. The appraisal system intended to develop educators on an on-going basis. The primary aim of this investigation was to establish the effect that IQMS has on educator efficacy. As an introduction to the study, the requirements for educator efficacy were reviewed. In so doing, the various characteristics for effective teaching-learning situation and of an “ideal” educator were highlighted. The didactical behaviour of successful educators was also in focus. The requirements for educator efficacy and the effects of IQMS on educator efficacy were investigated using a literature and empirical study. The study revealed that IQMS has a positive effect on educator performances. For the purposes of the empirical investigation, a structured questionnaire was used. Four hundred and six (406) questionnaires were completed by educators from the primary and secondary schools from the Pinetown District in the Ethekwini Region of KZN and these questionnaires were analysed. The data was processed and interpreted using descriptive and inferential statistics.

This thesis presents the development and validation of a novel interface modelling methodology integrated with a system architectural analysis framework that emphasises the need to manage the integrity of deriving and allocating requirements across multiple levels of abstraction in a structured manner. The state of the art review in this research shows that there is no shared or complete interface definition model that could integrate diverse interaction viewpoints for defining system requirements with complete information. Furthermore, while existing system modelling approaches define system architecture with functions and their allocation to subsystems to meet system requirements, they do not robustly address the importance of considering well-defined interfaces in an integrated manner at each level of systems hierarchy. This results in decomposition and integration issues across the multiple levels of systems hierarchy. Therefore, this thesis develops and validates following: -Interface Analysis Template as a systematic tool that integrates diverse interaction viewpoints for modelling system interfaces with intensive information for deriving requirements. -Coupling Matrix as an architecture analysis framework that not only allocates functions to subsystems to meet requirements but also promotes consistent consideration of well-defined interfaces at each level of design hierarchy. Insights from the validation of developed approach with engineering case studies within an automotive OEM are discussed, reflecting on the effectiveness, efficiency and usability of the methods.

HARDWARE TESTING is commonly used to check whether faults exist in a digital system. Much research has been devoted to the development of advanced hardware testing techniques and methods to support design for testability (DFT). However, most existing DFT methods deal only with testability issues at low abstraction levels, while new modelling and design techniques have been developed for design at high abstraction levels due to the increasing complexity of digital systems. The main objective of this thesis is to address test problems faced by the designer at the system level. Considering the testability issues at early design stages can reduce the test problems at lower abstraction levels and lead to the reduction of the total test cost. The objective is achieved by developing several new methods to help the designers to analyze the testability and improve it as well as to perform test scheduling and test access mechanism design. The developed methods have been integrated into a systematic methodology for the testing of system-on-chip. The methodology consists of several efficient techniques to support test scheduling, test access mechanism design, test set selection, test parallelization and test resource placement. An optimization strategy has also been developed which minimizes test application time and test access mechanism cost, while considering constraints on tests, power consumption and test resources. Several novel approaches to analyzing the testability of a system at behavioral level and register-transfer level have also been developed. Based on the analysis results, difficult-to-test parts of a design are identified and modified by transformations to improve testability of the whole system. Extensive experiments, based on benchmark examples and industrial designs, have been carried out to demonstrate the usefulness and efficiency of the proposed methodology and techniques. The experimental results show clearly the advantages of considering testability in the early design stages at the system level.
