There are several problems regarding textbooks in Indonesia, especially Arabic textbooks. First, the procurement stage, such as the process of writing, obtaining texts, evaluating, and publishing. Second, the distribution stage such as access to textbooks, and purchasing power of textbooks. Third, the stage of the use of books which covers the confusion of teachers in using textbooks and the period of use of school books. The aspects of the evaluation of textbooks will be important in the future. Therefore, this research aims to construct instrumental assessment of arabic teaching books from national and international perspectives. This is important to do as an effort to obtain quality Arabic textbooks with international insight. This research uses a Research and Development (R & D) approach and content analysis. The results of this study show that the Arabic textbook assessment instrument made by the National Education Standards Agency (BSNP) and the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) is still lacking because it does not accommodate all the points and basic elements contained in a Arabic textbooks as a Foreign language. So, the construction of a comprehensive integrated integrative Arabic textbook assessment instrument is absolutely necessary in order to obtain good and quality Arabic textbooks.

This review article addresses tensions, critiques and trends that are still latent in mainstream research on English textbooks that have looked at their intercultural aspects, which need to be explored from the perspective of critical interculturality to resist the instrumental, regulatory, homogenizing and commercial nature of textbooks developed by foreign and local publishing houses. The manuscript firstly elaborates on the textbook as an object of research; secondly, it discusses critical analysis of the content of textbooks; and thirdly, the text concludes by pondering critical interculturality, as a decolonial alternative, to make possible the construction of criteria of being, knowledge and power to orient the development of the English textbook, and move away from a de-contextualised textbook toward a desirable contextualised one. This article encompasses the state of the art supporting an ongoing research study on the English textbook from the perspective of critical interculturality that is being conducted within the doctoral programme1 in Education at Universidad Pedagógica and Tecnológica de Colombia (UPTC), conducted during 2014-2018, and supported by Universidad Externado de Colombia, Bogotá. Instrumental texts, as an important part of the textbooks, play an important role in organizing the teaching content and the teaching activities, facilitating the communication of the teacher, students and textbooks. Therefore, it is of great theoretical and practical significance to study and evaluate the instrumental texts of the textbooks. The instrumental texts in Market Leader is adopted as the research object. Content analysis and corpus analysis are applied in this paper. By retrieving their salient lexical and semantic patterns which are further associated with some modern concepts in ESP education, the book is evaluated from the perspective of cognitive strategy, learning styles, the relationship between teaching materials and learners and contextualized language instructions. The results of this study are as following: 1) Teaching notions can be reflected from the instrumental texts. 2) Cooperative learning and learners-centered approach are well shown in this book. Cognitive thinking and situation creation are relatively weak in this book.

Foreign language teaching methodologies have changed noticeably in the last hundred years. The emphasis on grammar has decreased, while the focus on communication has increased. Rather than quantitative in nature, these changes concern themselves more with the qualitative question of how grammar is taught. Two common approaches to grammar teaching are the inductive and deductive approach. While they both fall under the explicit grammar-teaching umbrella, research strongly points toward an advantage of the inductive grammar teaching approach. Therefore, a principal question that this article seeks to answer is which approach is more commonly found in current first-year German college textbooks. A detailed analysis of how eleven relevant textbooks present their grammar lessons reveals that the overwhelming majority (N=8) of the textbooks use the deductive approach. These findings indicate a significant disconnect between grammar presentation in textbooks and recent research on successful and effective foreign language teaching. It is strongly recommended that textbook authors and colleagues involved in the textbook selection process be more informed with the research findings in SLA and be instrumental in seeing that these changes are reflected in textbooks and language teaching curricula.

The use of ELT textbooks in multicultural schools is an under-explored issue despite an increasing number of non-Thais studying in the Thai compulsory education system due to mobility within the ASEAN Community. This paper aims to explore the representations of cultural aspects in the ELT textbooks, which are used in a public primary school where Cambodian, Lao, Myanmar, and Thai learners have created culturally and ethnically diverse landscape. Drawing upon the content analysis, the findings reveal five cultural categories ranked in the following order: products (41%), practices (26%), places (20%), persons (6%), perspectives (6%), and unidentified (1%). These cultural aspects are, however, imbalanced and inappropriate due to the misallocation of cultural representations and learners’ lack of recognition of the sociocultural background depicted. Language teachers and school administrators have become instrumental in narrowing down the cultural gap that exists between the textbooks’ cultural content and learners’ sociocultural backgrounds, experience, and contexts. This study can potentially inform language educators, school administrators, policy makers, and textbook writers who are involved in ELT textbook publication to be more culturally sensitive to Thai and migrant learners’ cultural milieu. The right to education of these learners should be recognized, valued, and promoted in multicultural schools that meet the objectives of UNESCO Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), namely Quality Education, which includes equitable education and recognition of cultural heterogeneity and multiplicity.

National identity and culture are crucial concerns in the context of second language acquisition. This is because language plays a vital role in the formation of the same. Previous studies have shown that studying English encourages learners to adopt Anglo-American culture, as textbooks have prioritized the target culture at the expense of the local/source culture in language learning in which a balanced approach could have been instrumental in the context of international and multicultural interaction. In the Saudi English as a foreign language (EFL) context, the cultural investigation of textbooks is a necessity as they are designed by educators from the target culture. Hence, the present study investigates the nature and extent of national identity and cultural representation in the Mega Goal textbook series. The investigation follows Fairclough’s model of critical discourse analysis (CDA). Data are analyzed using Byram’s model of the textual evaluation of cultural contents and further categorized using Chao’s model of analysing cultural identity. The results and discussion are divided into three segments: description, interpretation, and explication. The study finds that the Mega Goal series underrepresents the local/source culture by excluding the cultural components necessary for the awareness and representation of national identity in the context of international and multicultural interaction.

This paper examines how Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is transmitted in the context of geography education by investigating the extent to which geography textbooks in Vietnam promote ESD principles. At the same time, the paper helps clarify how ESD is anchored in formal education and how ESD is contextualized in the specific context of Vietnam. This study involved a qualitative analysis supported by MAXQDA software (VERBI, Berlin, Germany), where geography textbooks from grade 6 to grade 12 in Vietnam were analysed to determine (1) how sustainable development (SD) issues are integrated into the content of the textbooks and (2) the extent to which questions and tasks in the textbooks promote competencies regarding the demands of ESD. The findings show that the textbooks somewhat promote ESD through their content and didactic approach. However, there are still some drawbacks. In terms of content, the textbooks’ main approaches to both SD content and geography core knowledge are description and indoctrination. In terms of their didactic approach, almost all questions/tasks ask students to memorize and reproduce information and rote learning rather than helping them promote ESD competencies. This reconfirms that ESD remains an add-on issue to an overcrowded curriculum, and the geography textbooks reflect an instrumental approach to ESD.

This article presents an experiment with a group of secondary school music students in Spain. We used music score sheets enriched with Quick Response codes as a resource for the practice required to play a musical instrument. The first group (n = 56) was compared with another group (n = 56) that used traditional resources (textbooks and compact discs). The results of the research supported the fact that the students who used QR codes associated with videos – read by using mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets – achieved better results than those who used more traditional resources. The analysis of variance test showed that the learning resource had a significant effect on the scores obtained by the students. In other words, the marks of the students participating in the study varied significantly according to the resource used. There was no significant effect on the interaction of method and gender, so there is no relation between the students’ gender and the resources’ impact on the results obtained by students.

History textbooks are sources of collective memory and can thus be read as "autobiographies" of nation-states. History textbooks used to be anchored in national traditions, ultimately legitimizing the rationale of nation-states. In questioning the sole validity of national history, social movements since the 1960s and the process of globalization became the seedbeds for the deconstruction of master narratives. Because of their instrumental character as teaching tools, textbooks in general allow researchers to decipher the normative structures of societies. The information revolution since the 1970s has dethroned textbooks as the sole means of instruction in classrooms, and led to the development of different approaches for the analysis of textbooks. Today's globalizing world demands new reference frames for teaching and learning. In the second part of this article, eight clusters that are pertinent for orientation in the perplexing realities of the present are drafted: challenges resulting from the revolution in information technologies; the changing world of work; contradictory tendencies in globalizing processes; the impact of a new turbo-capitalism with its de-legitimizing impact on political systems; unequal developments leading to an ever increasing inequality on a global as well as on local levels; the increase of worldwide migration and its impact on classrooms; contested memories in societies that reposition themselves in a world that has grown together and re-fragmented at new seams; and finally, the crisis in orientation and values and the personal costs resulting from the perplexities and insecurities of the world.

The article traces the textual history of A. A. Blok’s poetic sketch «Rejoicing and Spinning…», which was previously erroneously treated as a completed work. The fi nal argument in resolving the issue is the previously unknown letter from A. A. Blok to D. N. Friedberg, discovered in the V. N. Orlov Foundation at RGALI, which is being introduced into the academic circulation for the first time. The circumstances of the two Symbolist poets’ cooperation in V. A. Ternavtsev’s educational and enlightenment project, the publication of textbooks for the primary classes of the «folk schools», are revealed. The analysis of the microtext — the notes and marginalia adjacent to the sketch — is instrumental for tracing the influence of V. Objectives This study investigates whether the steady demand for special music education has been reflected in the field and improved in order to cultivate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required in a rapidly changing society, and discusses the direction of practical and specific support through analysis of trends in special music education needs. Methods In order to suggest the direction in which music education in special education should move, music edu-cation needs are extracted based on literature related to music education by disability area and school level in spe-cial schools and general schools, and trends in music education needs are analyzed according to analysis standards. This is a literature analysis that quantifies the analyzed data by category and then expresses it as a final ratio to suggest the direction in which music education should move based on the results of music education de-mand trends. Results In the case of sensory disabilities, teacher expertise showed the highest rate in the areas of admin-istrative and financial support, and middle school courses in special schools for developmental disabilities also showed the highest rate of teacher expertise in the areas of administrative and financial support. The elementary school curriculum was found to have the highest demand rate in terms of motivation to learn textbook content, and teacher expertise was found to have the second highest rate. In the unclassified category, motivation was emphasized in terms of textbook content and song lyrics in the educational content area, and demands for univer-sality and specificity were also consistently appearing. Integrated classes in general schools also recognized the need for teacher expertise in administrative and financial support, and particularly emphasized the need for spe-cial education teachers to have expert music knowledge. In addition, the universality and specificity of each area are emphasized, and it was found that the rate of students' learning motivation was quite high. You must be able to use it right away. In addition, by referring to the songs included in the music textbook of the common curricu-lum, we pursue universality and specificity at the same time, and further secure the diversity of genres to motivate students by allowing them to experience the content system of all music, including singing, instrumental music, appreciation, and daily life. You will have to do it. Conclusions Since it is virtually difficult to cultivate teachers' administrative tasks and special education and music education expertise at the same time, experts with both music and special education expertise are selected at the national, provincial and provincial offices of education, and school level to develop textbooks and teacher guide-lines to provide training in the field.

Gugak (Korean traditional music) is a great legacy of the Korean people, which has developed creatively through the long history of contacting with foreign music. However, it has been neglected in school education, and its importance has gradually increased through the revision of the curriculum. This study intends to figure out whether gugak education is actually expanding in the school field and to study development plans by analyzing the current status of gugak education in 10 middle schools located in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. As a result of analyzing the gugak class hours in the 10 middle schools for three years, they are 24.7 hours on average, or 19.7% of the entire music class hours, which are considerably lower than the number of Western music class and far below the proportion of curriculum or textbooks. The distribution of the proportion of gugak class hours is 8.4% ~ 31.8%, which shows that there is a significant deviation by school. The intensive completion system is implemented by 8 schools, and the distribution by area is 41.9% for appreciation, 32% for instrumental music, 19.6% for singing, 5.8% for daily life, and 0.6% for creative writing. There is only one school that organizes all areas evenly. Moreover, due to the COVID-19, the vocal and wind instrument performance classes have decreased while the appreciation classes have increased relatively, for which alternatives are required.…

Abstract The proper use of the history of sciences can serve as a didactic tool to complement and provide opportunities for the teaching of physics. However, the fact that educators are not instrumental in the history and philosophy of science and the difficulty of finding good historical sources in accessible language has created an adequate use of this didactic instrument. In order to contribute to the construction of interfaces between the history of science and teaching, we proposed to carry out a historical analysis of the special relativity content in the 12 relaxed physics textbooks of the PNLD 2018. In order to apprehend the analysis, we read the material and we built six historical categories a posteriori. These categories guided a vast review of the literature in primary sources and in the history of special relativity, which culminated in the construction of supporting texts that were then used to assess the historical content distributed in textbooks. The analysis pointed out that these textbooks have several inconsistencies and anachronisms. Based on the results, we reflect and conclude that a closer relationship between scientific educators and science historians is necessary for the construction of interfaces between history and science teaching. Background. This article studies the stages of formation of bandura fingering in the twentieth century, analyzes the scientific and methodological literature, that has been the basis for the professional growth of the first bandura performers. The paper highlights fundamental methodological principles that contributed to the technical development and professional skills improvement of the future bandura performer. The article defines the main components of the “bandura school” of the past century, analyzes the basic approaches of professional authors to fingering, fingering combinations and fingering inversions on the bandura and highlights the relevance of their application in modern bandura performance. The study defines the significant professional fingering variants from the past and their importance in the present performance. Methods. In the early twentieth century, there has been a need of professional bandura training and educational textbooks that would promote self-learning of the instrument. As a response to the request of M. V. Lysenko, the famous bandura player from Kharkiv Hnat Khotkevych published the first “Bandura textbook” (Lviv), which promotes the ten-finger performing system, the Kharkiv-type of playing and offers a large number of exercises and technical repertoire, paying special attention to various fingering combinations and position of fingers on the string. The activity of M. Opryshko played a significant role in Ukrainian kobzar art. The “Bandura School” by V. Kabachko and E. Yutsevich is a textbook for primary education. Zinovy Shtokalko, a well-known bandura player of his time, created the “Kobzar textbook”, in which he promotes the Kharkiv-way of playing and professional bandura performance. Notably, due to the transition from the Kharkiv-type to the Kyiv-type banduras, both the technical and artistic expressive capabilities of the instrument have significantly deteriorated. While selecting the educational material, there should be an organic link between the development of students’ musical hearing, new performance techniques and familiarity with musical literacy. Of particular importance, here is the work on improving the artistic quality of performances, the development of students’ artistry. Conclusions. The issue of technical development of the bandura instrumental performer is linked to the problem of fingering. During the twentieth century, many teachers and researchers developed the necessary methodological basis, which became the foundation for the gifted generation of bandura performers. That is why, bandura fingering issue requires deep analysis and thorough review of existing developments, the search for new approaches and their practical implementation.

Online news portals such as Malaysiakini, Malaysia Today and many others have been instrumental in providing alternative news and information to the Malaysian public. These portals are currently treated differently from print media as they need not procure a licence or permit before publishing online content. Conversely, print media proprietors are mandated by the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 to hold valid printing licences and publication permits before offering their services. Further, the presence of the no censorship guarantee of the Internet appears to render online news portals and other online publications to be free from legislative control. This is undesirable as there appears to be two different sets of regulatory frameworks for traditional media and new media. Hence, this paper will trace the historical development of online news portals in Malaysia, analyse the existing regulatory regime which govern print media and new media, and examine the potential application of these laws to regulate online news portals. By adopting a qualitative approach, the study employed a combination of doctrinal and comparative analysis. A doctrinal analysis was adapted to explore the current regulatory framework in order to address the legal predicament faced by online news portals. Further, the study applied a comparative analysis method by examining current practices and experience in the United Kingdom (UK). For this reason, the study scrutinised relevant statutory provisions and other secondary sources comprising textbooks, academic journals, seminar papers, and other pertinent materials found in newspapers and/or reputable websites. In conclusion, it is submitted that the same set of laws and regulations should be applied to govern print media and online news portals here, similar to the practice adopted by the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) in the UK.

The problem in this study is that there are many educators who are only slaves to the curriculum, where in doing their learning in class, educators do not provide meaningful learning that only focuses on textbooks and without utilizing the surrounding environment as a source of learning. Though the task of the teacher in learning is not limited to the delivery of information to students only, but according to the progress and demands of the times, teachers must understand various effective learning models in order to guide students optimally. Mulyasa (2009, p.21).According to Komalasari (2011, p. 12), the learning process and learning of social studies should be influenced by environmental factors that become environmental inputs and instrumental input is a factor that is intentionally designed to support the teaching and learning process and the output that you want produced. One source of social studies learning that utilizes the surrounding environment is by visiting places that are interesting and can be linked to social studies learning material. This study aims to determine the utilization of Kampung Seni Jelekong as a social science learning resource. The approach used is the approach to research and development (research and development) refers to the 4D model with the stages of define, design, develop and disseminate , but in this study only until the third stage is develop. Data collection techniques by means of documentation studies, interviews and questionnaires. The data analysis process in this study is done by sorting and organizing data . The softness of Russian consonants in the oral speech of two generations of Russian-speaking bilinguals in Germany and monolinguals in Russia is explored. The relevance of the problem is due to the importance of studying the inherited Russian language of bilinguals, comparing the phonetic features of the speech of different generations of bilinguals, as well as their comparison with the features of the speech of Russian native speakers living in Russia, the need to study the state of the Russian language in the diaspora. The research is aimed at identifying the i-glide between the consonant and the subsequent vowel, which indicates the softness of the consonant. The material of the research was 300 syllables with soft consonants in voice recordings of phonetically representative texts developed in 1988 by S.B. Stepanova and used for many years as a universal tool for studying the phonetic aspect of oral speech. Auditory phonetic analysis of combinations of a soft consonant and a subsequent vowel, instrumental analysis with the Praat computer program (version 6.0.26), comparative analysis of the data were applied. The analysis of 300 syllables with soft consonants in various positions in the word showed that in the speech of bilinguals there are cases of i-glide absence: 83 cases (27%) in the speech of children and 32 cases (10%) in the speech of parents. It was proved that such cases most often occur with sonants, soft affricates, as well as some labial and dental consonants in the middle of a word. In the speech of monolinguals, there are almost no such cases. Russian speech in Germany is influenced by the phonetic system of the German language, however, most bilinguals (both children and adults) retain i-glide between a soft consonant and a vowel, which is characteristic of the Russian language. Comparison of the results of studying consonant softness with the results of studying their voicedness shows that softness is a more stable phonetic feature of Russian consonants compared to voicedness. The data obtained may be useful not only to linguists, but also to the authors of Russian language textbooks for bilingual children, as well as Russian language teachers working in German schools.

Introduction. Digital Humanities (DH), formed in the mid-20th century, represent a dynamic direction of social and humanitarian disciplines that use computer technology in research and education. The actuality of the paper is to determine trends in the development of Social Science and Humanities in the digital age: hybridization of Humanities, transformation of subject and research goals, predominance of instrumental interdisciplinary in the methododogy of research. Despite the active growth of institutions, technologies, models and practices of Digital Humanities, researchers do not have a unity of views on this direction. The objectives of the study are to analyze approaches to the definition of the concept, typology and basic characteristics of DH. Scientific novelty is expressed in the proposed typologiy of paradigms, models and practices of this direction. The paper defines theoretical status of DH.Methodology and sources. The paper uses Philosophical methodology for comparative analysis of the developing models (paradigms), including text analysis, quantitative research, digitization of image collections, Humanities Computer Science, as well as digital socio-humanitarian models and practices, such as Digital Philosophy, Digital History, Digital Social Research, Digital Self-Presentation, “Art and Science”, and others. Taken together, they represent the implementation of DH as the Global Network Project realization. The research is carried out on the material of Russian and foreign textbooks on Digital Humanities, scientific publications, and websites. Results and discussion. The paper presents an analysis of the DH development stages, provides justification for the concept and its main aspects. Analysis of approaches to the definition of DH reveals the main trends: a) DH represent a new interdisciplinary research direction that use information technology in traditional humanitarian fields to achieve meaningful goals; b) DH represent the ways of modeling and producing innovations. Their essential characteristics are: methodological and instrumental interdisciplinary and commercialization of innovations, transformation of the criteria of science (objectivity of knowledge, loss of disciplinary boundaries. The DH research typology criteria are defined according to basic paradigms, subject areas, research goals, and major institutions. An analysis of the main types of digital research is presented. The problem of the ambivalence of digital technologies used in DH is considered as the main risks: a) for the Humanities - “loss of focus” (technologization of language leads to the technologization of the memory of society; b) for a human (as a result of the predominance of the network forms of communication, the highest value for a person - freedom of choice and the meaning of being may be lost); c) for society (transformation of human communications into network forms of sociality).Conclusion. The expansion of digital technologies use in scientific research, education, culture, in general – and in the Humanities, in particular, is due to the global technological trends of the fourth industrial revolution. According to experts, the definition of “digital” in various areas of Digital Humanities does not express their essence, but characterizes the “computing” technologies used in the Social and Humanitarian knowledge. Accordingly, they do not represent independent scientific disciplines, but are models and practices that use information technology as instruments to solve the objectives of the Humanities and exchange knowledge and methods between scientists, engineers, designers, and students. In general, those changes characterize the process of the new science image development in the network society.

This study aimed to analyze the perception, needs, satisfaction, and course selection factors of general education from the students’point of view to derive implications for the reorganization and operation of the liberal arts curriculum. To this end, basic statistical analysis, difference analysis to identify student characteristics, and IPA analysis and Borich analysis to identify needs, were conducted on the response results of 1,454 students at a private university in Busan. The results are as follows:</br>First, regarding the role and meaning of general education, students responded that general education plays a role in enhancing interest among students in subjects other than those of their major, nurturing human beings with character, and promoting a new understanding of their major subjects. The results of this response were significantly different according to gender and class. What is noteworthy is that there was little difference in the students' perceptions of the main purpose of general education, which is universal intelligence education, and the instrumental role of general education, which is a supplement to major education.</br>Second, students' needs for the domain of general education were high in those practical domain fields that are directly related to employment, like career exploration and certification courses, and the associated domains for employment, like foreign languages and IT utilization fields. In the operation of the curriculum, there was a high demand for subject development reflecting the changing of the times and the latest trends, the expansion of student choice through the opening of various subjects, and appropriate class difficulty.</br>Third, overall satisfaction with general education was above average, and there were statistically meaningful differences by gender, grade, and field. In terms of general education operations, it has been shown that expanding the range of student selection through the opening of subjects in various areas, opening subjects reflecting the changing of the times and the latest trends, using appropriate textbooks and learning materials, and the instructors' expertise have a significant impact on student satisfaction.</br>Fourth, it was found that students consider the convenience and learning expectations first when choosing liberal arts subjects. Among the convenience factors, priority is given to classes that require no team projects, and subjects with little or no assignments are preferred. When it comes to learning expectations, subjects of interest and interesting subject names are given priority. There were differences in subject selection tendencies according to gender, grade, and the college itself.</br>Based on the above research results, four implications were derived and presented from the perspective of the organization, operation, and instructional strategies of the liberal arts curriculum.

This article addresses the didactical effects of CAS assisted proofs in Danish upper secondary mathematics textbooks as a result of the 2005 reform that introduced CAS as a part of the upper secondary level curriculum (and examinations). Based on a reading of 33 upper secondary school mathematics textbooks, 38 instances of CAS assisted proofs are identified in ten different textbooks. The CAS based proofs in these textbooks are of three types: complete outsourcing of the proof to CAS; partial outsourcing of the proof to CAS; and additional verification of the proof’ correctness by CAS. Analyses of examples of each of these types are provided. The analyses draw on theoretical constructs related to both proofs and proving (e.g. proof schemes) and to use of digital technologies in mathematics education (lever potential, blackboxing, instrumental genesis). In particular, the analyses make use of a distinction between epistemic, pragmatic and justificational mediations. Results suggest both potential problems with using CAS as an integrated part of deductive mathematical proofs in textbooks, since it appears to promote undesired proof schemes with the students, and difficulties with understanding these problems using the constructs of epistemic and pragmatic mediations that are often adopted in the literature regarding CAS use in mathematics teaching and learning.

This empirical survey aims at exploring Saudi freshmen students’ instrumental and integrative motivational orientation to learn English as a foreign language as well as to identify what demotivational factors negatively affect their language learning. A 38-item self-developed strongly-agree to strongly-disagree Likert-scale questionnaire was administered to 133 Saudi freshmen students from a Saudi university to generate data related to their motivational and demotivational factors. Data analyses were done to calculate percentages and means through descriptive analyses to measure the participants’ preferences for various questionnaire items. The results of this quantitative investigation have revealed that Saudi freshmen students bear stronger instrumental motivation along with a reasonably high integrative motivation and have demonstrated mild negative effect towards learning English caused by various demotivational factors. Among the primary instrumental motivational orientations of Saudi freshmen, the role of English language to enable them to better understand their textbooks and reference material, effectively interact with foreigners during their international travels and enhanced chances to secure better job have been ranked the highest. The results of this survey have disclosed an interesting fact that the participants of this study have exhibited extremely positive attitude towards the target language. The descriptive analyses also suggest that Saudi freshmen have moderate inhibitory factors against learning the target language related to understanding English language teachers, difficult English textbooks, difficult English grammar and vocabulary and lack of chances of practicing the target language outside the university setting. The participants have mentioned that no major hinderances are caused by inappropriate behavior of their teachers and peers as well as lack of teaching aids. Some pedagogical implications and suggestions have been drawn based on the findings of this empirical survey.

In the context of global communication and individual development, English has evolved into a universal lingua franca, playing a crucial role across various fields worldwide. Proficiency in spoken English is indispensable for the academic journey of Chinese college students. However, the current status of Chinese college students' spoken English proficiency reveals that there are still some aspects that need improvement. The communicative approach, recognized as an advanced language teaching methodology, proves to be instrumental in enhancing students' oral proficiency in English. This paper adopts the communicative approach perspective, employing a case study focused on a specific section of a Chinese students' English textbook. The study delves into the teaching path of "create-experience-practice-achieve". Building upon this teaching framework, a concrete teaching plan is designed, followed by an analysis and reflections, aiming to provide reflective insights as a practical reference for college-level oral English instruction. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the enhancement of college students' oral English proficiency.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the knowledge, attitude and behaviour of foundation chemistry learners concerning the sustainable development concept. Design/methodology/approach Qualitative and quantitative studies were conducted. Atlas.ti software was used to analyse the chemistry curriculum based on selected themes and sub-themes. A survey was carried out involving 132 chemistry learners. The chemistry learners were students from a foundation programme in a local university located in Selangor, Malaysia. The collected data were analysed using SPSS 21.0 involving descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings Document analysis on the chemistry curriculum shows that water is the theme most covered in the chemistry learners’ textbook, as compared to other themes. In general, the chemistry learners have good knowledge and attitude concerning the sustainable development concept. However, their knowledge and attitude do not reflect in their behaviour as an individual, as well as in the classroom. Moreover, their knowledge, attitude and behaviour focus more on environmental dimension, as compared to other sustainable development dimensions. Practical implications This paper is instrumental in assisting educators to assess how chemistry learners perceive sustainable development, and this may help to bring about changes to improve chemistry teaching and learning processes towards education for sustainable development. Originality/value This paper is an original and novel research paper which is first conducted on sustainable development concept in chemistry curriculum in Malaysia.

Multidomain proteins can have a complex evolutionary history that may involve de novo domain evolution, recruitment and / or recombination of existing domains and domain losses. Here, the domain evolution of the plant-specific Ca2+-permeable mechanosensitive channel protein, MID1-COMPLEMENTING ACTIVITY (MCA), was investigated. MCA, a multidomain protein, possesses a Ca2+-influx-MCAfunc domain and a PLAC8 domain. Profile Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) of domains were assessed in 25 viridiplantae proteomes. While PLAC8 was detected in plants, animals, and fungi, MCAfunc was found in streptophytes but not in chlorophytes. Full MCA proteins were only found in embryophytes. We identified the MCAfunc domain in all streptophytes including charophytes where it appeared in E3 ubiquitin ligase-like proteins. Our Maximum Likelihood (ML) analyses suggested that the MCAfunc domain evolved early in the history of streptophytes. The PLAC8 domain showed similarity to Plant Cadmium Resistance (PCR) genes, and the coupling of MCAfunc and PLAC8 seemed to represent a single evolutionary event. This combination is unique in MCA, and does not exist in other plant mechanosensitive channels. Within angiosperms, gene duplications increased the number of MCAs. Considering their role in mechanosensing in roots, MCA might be instrumental for the rise of land plants. This study provides a textbook example of de novo domain emergence, recombination, duplication, and losses, leading to the convergence of function of proteins in plants.

The article was prepared during the work on the dictionary of cognitive terms. It highlights some results of the project work: aspects of the cognitive terms description in a new educational dictionary, methodological and instrumental approaches taken during the dictionary project. The research approach is based on the methodology of cognitive semantics. The dictionary may become a textbook for those who study cognitive linguistics and a reference book for researchers in the field of cognitive science. The main goal of this lexicographic source is to describe a term both as a minimal component of scientific knowledge and as a unit of the lexical level of language. Modeling of the knowledge format is carried out with the help of corpus and software instruments, including cognitive (associative) experiment. The novelty of the dictionary is that this thesaurus-encyclopedic sourse presents terms in their system nature. The term use is analyzed on the material of modern scientific communication and illustrated with examples from scientific discourse. The corpus of examples from scientific communication and the subcorpus of popular science communication examples are compiled by the project participants according to technologies and rules of corpus linguistics. The data collected as a result of the scientific communication analysis is verified by comparing it with the results of an associative experiment and with the data of popular science communication subcorpus. This explains the fundamental novelty of the dictionary and its applicability for clarifying the issues of scientific communication in cognitive aspect.

Abstract The aim of this article is to explore and explain the 2012 civil service reform in Estonia. The study builds on the concept of public service bargain, which facilitates the operationalization of changes in the civil service system. Although public service bargain has attracted a lot of interest of public administration scholars, it has not been previously applied in the civil service research in Central and Eastern Europe. The theoretical part synthesizes previous literature on typologies of public service bargain, thus elaborating an analytical framework for the empirical study. The empirical study addresses the following research question: did the civil service reform change the public service bargain in Estonia and if so, how ? The empirical research was carried out by relying on desk research, secondary literature on Estonian administrative reforms and participant observation. The study builds partly on the materials collected for the EUPACK case study on Estonia. The analysis shows that the civil service reform brought along changes in all three components of public service bargain: reward, competency and loyalty, although the agency-type bargain was retained. The shift towards the managerial public service bargain is evidenced in the greater emphasis on flexibility in employment relations, the use of fixed-term contracts, increased private-sector-style practices at all levels of the civil service, an emphasis on performance management, and the reduction of job security. Despite the widespread criticism of NPM, the Estonian civil service reform presents a “textbook case” of managerial NPM-oriented reform. It is argued that substantially diminished rewards may contribute to a vicious circle of temporary civil servants, including problems with recruiting new officials and a further increase in their turnover, ultimately leading to a “temporary state”. The loyalty of civil servants may in turn shift towards instrumental, short-term and easily influenced or changing loyalty, thus challenging the fundamental values of democratic governance.

The aim of the article is to carry out an attempt to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the musical-aesthetic, socio-cultural, cultural-historical prerequisites for the development of rock music in Ukraine, which influences the musical-aesthetic thesaurus, forms the aestheticosphere, value orientations and, ultimately, determines the national-cultural identity of a young person. It is worth proving that musical culture, including the rock industry, has become the embodiment of musical ideals and mental and ideological attitudes of the Ukrainian music lover, which in turn influenced the processes of national identification and left a characteristic imprint on the ethnonational mentality and musical culture as a whole. The methodology of the research consists in the synthesis of art and cultural approaches to the study of the phenomenon of rock music in the Ukrainian art space, in the use of dialectical methods of analysis, synthesis, comparison, generalization and interconnection of cultural identity with the musical culture of the Ukrainian nation. The scientific novelty lies in the theoretical comprehension of the vocal and instrumental art of rock music in Ukraine as a phenomenon of musical cultural genesis and a form of national and cultural identification, in the implementation of cultural and artistic reflection on this genre and style variety. For the first time, the retrospection of Ukrainian rock music is presented in the context of cultural and historical processes of national identification. Through the prism of the author's approach, rock music appears as the embodiment of artistic and aesthetic ideals and mental and ideological trends, leaving a characteristic imprint on the processes of national and cultural identification, ethno-national mentality and the musical culture of Ukraine in general. The studied material allowed us conclusions that the formation and development of domestic rock music covers four stages. The four stages of the functioning of domestic rock music, which we have studied, contributed to the search for national and cultural identity, focused on the national aspect of the rock industry. In turn, this influenced the formation and cultivation of national features in rock music and musical culture as a whole, namely: in the introduction of the Ukrainian language as "fashionable" in the youth rock environment, in authentic intonation inclusions in arrangements, rock compositions, in the names of works and bands; in the use of folk traditions, folklore themes, regional motifs, dialects in vocal and instrumental rock sound of Ukrainian origin. These musical, aesthetic and cultural features of the national rock music contributed to the establishment of national and cultural identity, the popularization of the Ukrainian segment and the entry of the national musical culture into the world art space. The materials of this article were tested by the author in the process of teaching the course "Modern Popular Estradna Music" in the structure of secondary and higher music education and as a special course in out-of-school art education. A manuscript of the textbook of the same name has also been prepared, where domestic rock music is presented as a trigger and a business card of the national, cultural and musical identification of Ukraine.

Introductory psychology courses have a broad reach; their textbooks are instrumental in disseminating information about mental distress. In this study, we present the theoretical implications of a Foucauldian discourse analysis of constructions of schizophrenia in six introductory psychology textbooks assigned in Aotearoa/New Zealand and Australia. We identify three interconnected discursive constructions within the textbooks: object-for-study, social problem, and unrecoverable illness. These constructions converge to position people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia (PWDS) as sites for biomedical intervention and generate biomedical treatment as necessary but non-curative. Notably, the voices of PWDS are absent from the texts. We contend that amplifying counter discourses and the voices of PWDS is essential to provide the context, meaning, and hope that is missing from these textbooks, and broader society. We work with Mad Studies to present potential ways of theorising otherwise around these experiences—and leveraging this theory in textbook writing.

In line with the understanding of the role of critical pedagogy in intercultural language education, in this paper we focus on critical discourse and sociolinguistic analysis of contemporary textbooks of Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL). We search for neoliberal gender ideologies in educational discourses targeting international audience of students of SFL. Even though new textbooks are said to promote the “feminization” of educational contexts (Gray 2010), we interpret them as sources of latent hegemonic influences favoring highly regulated and standardized neoliberal capitalist worldviews toward gender. Based on previous research of textbooks of SFL (Bori 2018; Kuzmanović Jovanović 2016), we herein present results of an instrumental qualitative case study (emancipatory focus group research) taking a critical stand toward neoliberal gender ideologies among predominantly female university students of Spanish at the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade who are exposed to the above outlined teaching and learning materials. Our objective is to create a new educational space in our SFL classrooms in which contextualized knowledge construction takes place leading to the maturation of SFL users and teachers, who are “capable of changing their reality in ways related to formal and informal educational settings” (Filipović 2015: 105).

The paper examines the potential offered by augmented reality in the didactic field, with particular reference to the possibility of creating “augmented” experiences, which make it possible to obtain a high level of interaction with the sources and places that have acted and are acting for conservation and activation of historical memory. The subject of analysis is the psycho-pedagogical value of the information enrichment offered by AR, which allows to support the narrative potential of historical sources through the presentation of documents, interactive objects, 360° videos and 2D and 3D reconstructions. Particular attention is paid to: the possibility of using augmented reality to innovate textbooks and teaching methodologies; the possibility of creating “active” study paths with a high level of interaction and personalization; the recent applications of AR in the museum field; the psycho-pedagogical role of AR in the construction of stories and narratives and the impact that this type of technology can have on the methods of transmission and construction of stories.

Physical rehabilitation of children with myopia is a difficult process and requires a long-term, systematic and stage-by-stage use of a complex of means for restoration acuity of vision. Kinesiotherapy (respiration and twist exercises), finger and articulatory gymnastics, methods of Onnuri Therapy, reflexotherapy, instrumental physiotherapy, etc. are usually used for this, and that taken together leads to the positive effect and restoration of visual system. Nevertheless, in progressive forms of myopia these physical methods are not always effective. The objective – theoretical justification of the necessity and the essence of physical rehabilitation during myopia, analysis and summation of list of research and methodological literature concerning the study of influence of physical rehabilitation on physical development and psychoemotional state of pupils with myopia of various degrees. Methods. Sources of literature (scientific papers, textbooks, manuals, synopses of thesis works) chosen from the electronic database of the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, Russian scientific electronic library «eLibrary», Web of Science, PubMed, PEDro, etc. Results. On the basis of literary sources, it has been established that the increase in number of cases of myopia of pupils is, in the first place, connected with the increase in visual loadings. The main pathogenic link of the acquired myopia is sclera distension. Children affected by the acquired myopia have a combination of corneal thinning and the increase of its horizontal diameter and the length of the anterior-posterior axis of the eye that indicates the distension of the eye cornea. The corneal thinning is accompanied by its sensory decrement from 19 % to 57 % depending on the degree of the disease and by the decrease of the rigidity of the outer layer of the eye. The corneal thinning is one of the objective criteria of myopia progression, that involves inclusion of keratopachymetry to the complex of obligatory examinations of myopia patients for defining a rational therapeutic approaches. Children with myopia with corneal thinning form a risk group in regard to the development of retinal degeneration. Conclusions. Myopia is a current medical and social problem of the present. Physical rehabilitation of such children is a difficult and long-term process, which requires a systematic and stage-by-stage use of its various means.

The present study focuses on the history textbook of West Bengal Board of Secondary Education with an aim to identify the loopholes and provide suggestions on areas that need improvement. The findings of the study revealed the presence of extensive regional culture throughout textbook adding to the keenness of the students in knowing their regional culture and the importance of preserving it.The pictorial representations used in the text lackedcolour and clarity and this may prove to be a major disadvantage as it helps readers connect to the text and adds to its appeal.Thelanguage used in the text was majorly lucid, except for the technical jargons which were found left unaddressed, could hinder the continuity of the learning process. The portrayal of women, although present in the text, was comparatively lesserthan theirmale counterparts clearly reflecting the patriarchal roots of the society. The text could incorporatemore of women - centric topics as the modern society progresses towards a gender – equity society. It was deduced that the textbook needs further updation, additions and improvements in certain areas, and therecommendationsmade by the study could prove to be instrumental in aligning the textbook in line with the suggestions made by National Education Policy (NEP, 2020).

The question of ethnic representation has been a topic of concern for analysts and users of Malaysian textbooks. In this paper, we present a study analysing Malaysian Year Five English language textbooks published from 1968 to 2016, focussing specifically on ethnic representation and its changes over time in these texts. We conducted content analyses of the seven national textbooks published over the period, revealing mixed messages in ethnic representation: although on the surface there were celebrations of diverse ethnic and religious practices, these coexisted with problematic erasures and marginalisations of various groups. The problematic MCI (Malay, Chinese, Indian) formulation was favoured despite mapping poorly onto East Malaysia and rendering non-MCI groups invisible. Portrayals of Malays were particularly dominant, in some editions the only ethnic group with role model characters in the text. Chronologically, we identify three distinct phases that project different models of ethnic representation: ethnic erasure (1968, 1973, 1979), a proliferation of ethnic-ness (1997, 1999, 2012), and finally the apparent beginnings of a “Malaysian” narrative (2016), marking a shift towards greater inclusion despite the residue of the problematic patterns from earlier phases. The study offers an empirical contribution to debates on ethnic representation in Malaysian education, as encoded in locally-produced English-language textbooks. It also highlights that alongside the instrumental purpose of second/foreign language instruction, textbooks also project ideologies and narratives of nationhood.

Education is a process on which the future of a nation depends. In addition, a quality educational process is a necessary condition for higher education, without which education will not be competitive. Teachers, educational technologies, methods, tools (visual aids, textbooks, technical devices, etc.), educational management are involved in the process. Education provides general cultural and professionally oriented training of a graduate of the degree of junior specialist, determines the amount of special knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to solve typical tasks of the specialist in the respective position, including the ability to use theoretical knowledge and practical skills, to perform the technological stages of manufacturing orthopedic prostheses, to provide medical care in emergencies, to assess the impact of dangerous factors on the development of occupational diseases. Education provides the activities of a nurse, which includes organizational functions, determining the needs of patients, the ability to prepare patients for complex laboratory tests and instrumental methods of examination, special care and care for patients, participation in treatment and prevention, conduct an educational work in accordance with the principles of nursing ethics and deontology, constant improvement of professional level, practice of practical skills in the departments of hospitals, hospices and family medicine clinics. Education provides students with the ability to form a worldview, understanding the principles of society, the ability to think abstractly, analyze and synthesize on the basis of logical arguments and verified facts, consider social phenomena in development and specific historical conditions, lead a discussion, use appropriate terminology and thoughts expression in oral and written forms in the native language. Students are taught to use knowledge in the field of socio-economic training, communicate in a foreign language, be ready to work in a foreign language environment using information technology, search for processing and analysis of information from various sources, communicate professionally, provide harmonious and constructive relationships in the performance of professional tasks. At IFNMU Medical College, students learn the ability to interpret and use theoretical knowledge and practical skills on diseases questions, methods of organizing the safety of human life, their protection from the possible consequences of accidents and disasters. At the same time, education, and hence its quality, is not limited to learning outcomes. It is also the physical, intellectual and spiritual development of the individual, the level of his upbringing. That is why well-known scientists do not have a single opinion on the concept of quality education. The quality of education depends on many factors: teaching staff, the level of their skills; resource provision of the educational process; management of the educational process; curricula of educational content and educational and methodological support; effective educational technologies; psychological support of the educational process, as well as from the subjects of education, concerted actions with parents, etc. Of course, education will be of good quality if all components interact effectively. The article highlights the features of providing quality professional before higher education, its interrelation with efficiency of preparation of experts in higher educational institutions is defined.

The article examines the current problems of providing learning online for music teacher students studying at pedagogical universities in the speciality 014 Secondary Education (Musical art). A review of the latest research in the context of the adopted educational standards and the implementation of the ideas of the New Ukrainian School requires the search for effective ways of working with students through digital education. The training of music teacher students based on the principles of integrated learning takes into account the didactic skills associated with the involvement of specialists of musical specialities in artistic and creative activities based on the didactic module (perception-performance, creation and evaluation of the results of artistic activity). The work presents the method of teaching students online based on modular structure. The methodology was implemented in the conditions of online learning on the example of students mastering the integrated course “Methodology of teaching “Art” at school”. Taking into account the specifics of this educational discipline, which reveals modern integrated approaches to teaching art at school, we structured the stages of its study according to the levels of student involvement in working with digital tools (cognitive- developmental, constructive and creative). An attempt was made to offer students at each stage of education the performance of professionally oriented situations. “Lecture-consilium” is defined as an effective form of working with a student audience in synchronous mode, using ICT for the presentation of creative projects in integrated “Art” lessons. A separate place is given to examples of conducting a review and advisory session, in the form of a flex model. The method of teaching students through the means of telecommunication with the use of graphic and symbolic means is presented. It included working with electronic textbooks, using the tools “Саnva”, “LearningApps”, “Сubase 12”. According to the goals of the work, the effectiveness of the methodology of learning online during the assimilation of integrated course using criteria that determine the level of integration and pedagogical skills of future music teachers has been proved. Also, a preliminary analysis of the impact of the online method on motivation of music-pedagogy students and the increase of creative motivation in the performance of art (instrumental, vocal, choral creativity) using innovative learning technologies has been done. Learning outcomes were studied through successful completion of professionally-based tasks, which included designing art lessons, creating art projects, and digital tools. In order to obtain preliminary results and check the effectiveness of the method of teaching online students of pedagogical universities majoring in 014 Secondary Education (Musical Art), the study was conducted in groups of the full-time and part-time students of the H.S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University in the Department of Musical Art. Three criteria were selected: informational and motivational demonstrated a degree of awareness in the information environment, the ability to perceive artistic information on the Internet, complete professionally-based assignments via online resources. Analytical and active criterion is students’ ability to create art projects and conducting lessons during pedagogical practice online. Active-transformative, which reflected the manifestations of the creative motives of the applicants during artistic and creative activities (perception-performance-creation-evaluation of work) in online education. The results show that online learning method for music-pedagogy students described here is likely to be provided as a basis for modern methods of online learning.
