Resumo:
A CULTURAL HISTORY OF INSECTS IN THE AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT A Cultural History of Insects in the Age of Enlightenment covers the period from 1600 to 1820, a time of global exploration, the discovery of species, and advances in scientific technologies and methods. The natural sciences were increasingly shaped by what could be seen, observed, and classified. This new, Enlightenment approach to knowledge was greatly facilitated by enormous advances in microscopy. Enlightenment entomologists used miscrosopes to examine previously invisible bodies and worlds, illuminating insect metamorphosis and establishing the field of insect morphology. The 6 volume set of the Cultural History of Insects presents the first comprehensive history from antiquity to today of all forms and aspects of human-insect interaction. The themes covered in each volume are insect knowledge; insects and disease; insects and food; insect products; insects in mythology and religion; insects as symbols; insects in literature and language; and insects in art. The Cultural Histories Series A Cultural History of Insects is part of The Cultural Histories Series. Titles are available as hardcover sets for libraries needing just one subject or preferring a tangible reference for their shelves or as part of a fully-searchable digital library. The digital product is available to institutions by annual subscription or on perpetual access via www.bloomsburyculturalhistory.com. Individual volumes for academics and researchers interested in specific historical periods are also available in print or digitally via www.bloomsburycollections.com. Matthew S. Lehnert is Associate Professor of Biology at Kent State University, USA. Volume 4 in the Cultural History of Insects set. General Editor: Gene Kritsky is Dean of Behavioral and Natural Sciences at Mount St. Joseph University, USA.

The diverse ecological niches that insects occupy have led to the immense variation we observe in the structure of their compound eyes and the visual signals that insects can produce. The modular structure of the compound eye, through which insects receive visual information, is a highly adaptable structure capable of impressive feats of image resolution, colour perception, and motion detection, in a range of varying light environments. Additionally, the insect exoskeleton, through which insects produce visual signals and cues, is a dynamic canvas producing a diversity of shapes, textures, pigments, and structural colours. This chapter attempts to present the diversity resultant from millennia of selective pressure in a variety of contexts, including conspecific assessment, prey capture, and predator avoidance.

Our allegiance to individualism sanctions the insult, with or without humor, to a significant extent through free speech rights. But what if the sting of symbolic aggression––as seemingly minor as an insult dressed up in the pleasantries of a joke––in fact accounts in many instances for the more acute pain of the physical assault? To be sure, physical assaults can harm material well-being. But what if a dimension of violence cannot be understood apart from the cruelty of the joke or the sting of ridicule? What if a shaming insult constitutes the significant sting of racial discrimination or sexual assault?

Resumo:
Dragonflies are conspicuous insects. Many are large; they fly strongly; most are brightly coloured. As a result, they have been collected extensively. Their larvae are less familiar. 'Mud-eyes', as some are called, are drab, and almost all live in fresh waters, out of sight. They are, perhaps, best known as bait for freshwater fish. The dragonflies constitute a very distinct order of insects, the Odonata. In Australia, two suborders are represented: damselflies (Zygoptera), generally very slender insects, the fore- and hindwings similar in shape and venation and commonly held closed above the body at rest (Figs 46-63), the larvae with external gills on the end of the abdomen (Figs 4A-C, E); and dragonflies proper (Anisoptera), stouter, stronger-flying insects, the fore- and hindwings more or less dissimilar in shape and venation and commonly held spread at rest (Figs 64-101), the larvae with internal, rectal gills (see Chapter 2). Living representatives of the third suborder (Anisozygoptera) are confined to Japan and the Himalayas. The term 'dragonfly' is commonly applied to the entire order.
